My first Grizzly Bear performance I rather caught by chance. While on a walk through New York neighbourhoods I stumbled into a park hosting the Jelly NYC pool parties. The place set by the waterfront with Manhattan's skyline in the back was beautiful on its own. Discovering that not only Beach House but also Grizzly Bear were about to perform for free left me with no other choice but to stay. I'd soon after witness a murmur go through the crowd, smartphones were hauled out and evidence was taken. Later via twitter I figured Jay-Z, Beyoncé and Solange had all shown up to watch the show, too.

Beach House's dreamy pop sounds were so chilled, floating on the heat waves. It was a dream come true. But yet not even perfect enough for Grizzly Bear were to follow. You think the show was only great because it was outdoors with the skyline in the background, dragonflies flying along and a soft gentle breathe blowing? Partly correct, I'd say. It was indeed a magical setting but the music aided the impression. Victoria from Beach House would join Grizzly Bear for a beautiful collaboration. And I am sure the magic conveys in clubs and overseas as well as magic tricks work in the dark and for outdoor kid's parties. It's not the magical setting but the magic itself. Go catch Grizzly Bear if you want to catch a part of the dream.

i saw grizzly bear in orlando, fl at the house of blues. wow. excellent live band, you couldn't actually ask for more. surreal quality - it bordered on a religious experience. ed droste has a wondrous voice and delivered one perfect note right after the other.

daniel rossen is the real deal, so glad i was able to watch him live. for our show daniel controlled the tempo, wasting no time between songs as he deftly switched between guitars and a keyboard.

chris taylor & chris bear were a pleasure to experience, this band is so beyond perfect. taylor was chatty & shared anecdotes, what a guy! bear was friendly, always courteous. overall an amazing band - unbelievable.

i cannot emphasize enough how fantastic they were live. house of blues was the perfect setting, i was right up to the stage. please do not hesitate to see them live! they are absolute professionals, they started on time & didn't waste time with tangential rants.

they played older songs very dear to long time fans but didn't neglect crowd favorites. i will do my best to see them as many times as i can.

i saw grizzly bear again in nashville on 09/08 at marathon music works with scott gilmore opening. gilmore was a little quiet, but very talented and i really liked his set.

grizzly bear were phenomenal as always. the only issue was the venue itself. unlike the house of blues, which was built for music, marathon music is basically a warehouse.

it just wasn't that great of a venue, but the show was great regardless! the stage was kind weird so they couldn't really unleash their light show either. but like i said, the venue didn't succeed in holding them back.

i know that they didn't play fine for now when they toured shields and i am really glad they opted to include it this time around. i'll never tire of hearing it, no matter what.

my favorite cut from painted ruins is three rings, which is kind of an almost religious experience? i can't stress enough how much grizzly bear should be seen live, their records really don't do them justice.

I recently saw Grizzly Bear with Spoon at the PNC Pavilion in Cincinnati, Ohio. Hands down, this was the best show I've ever seen. I was an avid listener to their albums, but not one who would typically go see a band like this live. The show was a auditory experience that will sit in my mind for a long time to come. These are some of the most talented musicians and true masters of their instruments. The energy and visual performance was very telling of the band's love of performing and audience loyalty. I would absolutely recommend seeing Grizzly Bear live.

A fantastic venue for them--sound really traveled well. Their stage show was also very beautiful and dynamic. Lots of responsive lights and an amazing netting backdrop. They had an amazing setlist:

While You Wait for the Others

Three Rings

Sleeping Ute

Ready, Able

Sun in Your Eyes

Mourning Sound

Four Cypresses

Losing All Sense

I might be missing one or two, but it was a fantastic show. They looked like they were enjoying themselves and sounded great. Can't wait to see them again.

Another amazing performance from one of the best bands of this generation. Perfectly tuned tapestries of harmonies abounded. They played all the hits, sadly leaving out a few of my favorites (where was cheerleader? Little brother??), but all sounded even better than their meticulously produced albums. They still kill it after all these years

The show was brilliant! Their stage performance has increased since their last show in Paradiso. The quality of sound, voices and instruments was superb. The playlist adventurous, and most of all, they showed their best at the very end of the show.

Great concert. I wasn't familiar at all with the first few songs but then the band started hitting my playlist. They were really cool. Very tight band, they really have honed their craft.I'll go and see them whenever they come through San Fran.

The first half of the concert the sound was mediocre at best. Soundman must have been drunk of stoned I guess. Allmost left. Luckily the second half it grately improved so we could enjoy the band.

Wonderful show by Grizzly Bear at the Brixton Academy last night. Their music is an unprecedented collection of mesmeric tenderness, noise, jazz and vast soundscapes. A truly joyous secular experience.

Grizzly Bear Conjure Eerie Magic at Tour Kickoff

By Ryan Reed

As Grizzly Bear glided through “Adelma,” an ambient interlude from their new album , Shields , the band’s rainbow-hued stage lights faded to black. Light bulbs flickered in glass jars, drifting above the quintet’s silhouettes, while multi-instrumentalist Chris Taylor bent to his clarinet, conjuring sheets of noise that filled Knoxville’s Tennessee Theatre with eerie magic. Later on, during the quietest expanses of “Lullabye,” singer Ed Droste toyed with an auto-harp while drummer Chris Bear tapped out melodies on a xylophone.

In the school of modern indie rock, Grizzly Bear are the artsy valedictorians. At the regal Tennessee Theatre, they were on their best behavior, effortlessly maneuvering through a set list heavy on new material and early fan-favorite anthems.

Grizzly Bear Head Into the Wild to Make ‘Shields’

After a blaring, psychedelic opening set from New Zealand’s Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Grizzly Bear strode onstage to deafening roars. “This is our first show on our U.S. tour,” Droste noted, name-dropping their buddies Beach House, who played a triumphant set two days prior at the Bijou Theatre across the street. “Knoxville, represent!” he shouted, before launching into “Speak in Rounds,” a simmering new tune that built to an explosive climax. Dressed in a sharp white suit, co-frontman Daniel Rossen led the band with his furious guitar strumming, as dizzying lights sprayed across the stage.

Choosing The Right Bear-Watching Tour For You

If you are wondering where to see grizzly bears in British Columbia, then a grizzly bear tour from Vancouver Island is your best bet!

Seeing grizzly bears in the wild is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and some fantastic tours are available for bear-watching on Vancouver Island.

For the absolute best experience, consider your desires for the day and what factors are important to make it worthwhile.

There are a few essential things to consider when choosing the right bear-watching tour for you:

  • Size of the tour – small group tours are best as they are the least disruptive to the bears.
  • Type of boat – some tours have large boats with indoor seating. These boats may be better for families or if you want to stay dry in bad weather. Other tours have smaller zodiac-style speedboats, and these are great for adventurous travelers who want to feel the wind in their hair.
  • Length of tour – depending on the time you have to spare, you may want to take a full-day tour or only a half-day trip.
  • Cultural experience – some grizzly bear tours on Vancouver Island also includes a cultural experience with the local First Nations people. Some tours are also Indigenous-owned, which means your money will be going towards supporting the cultural and economic recovery of the First Nations people.

Types Of Bears On Vancouver Island

There are two types of bears on Vancouver Island. The American black bear and the Vancouver Island black bear. The Vancouver Island black bears are larger and have a darker shade of black than their American counterpart.

Vancouver Island is the best place to take a grizzly bear watching tour in Canada, but the tours are not actually viewing grizzly bears on the island itself. The experience takes you through a viewing of the inlets on the west coast of mainland British Columbia.

The best grizzly bear viewing locations, such as Bute Inlet, are accessed by boat tours from Vancouver Island.

The journey by boat to the inlets is an incredible experience, as you will be able to see the stunning scenery of British Columbia and wonderful marine life along the way.

Recently there have been some sightings of grizzly bears on Vancouver Island . So in the future, it may be possible to spot grizzly bears here more regularly.

If you are interested in spotting black bears, the best place to see them is in Tofino, on Vancouver Island’s west coast.

Can You Find Bears Without A Tour?

It is possible to see bears while out hiking or camping on Vancouver Island , but bears are very shy and cautious of humans so they usually run away when they hear people coming.

You might catch a glimpse of the bears on the hiking trails, but you certainly won’t get a good chance to see them up close or for very long.

Although bear attacks are rare, you should treat them as dangerous animals, and it is not a good idea to go out looking for them on your own.

Your best chance of seeing bears up close is from a bear-watching tour.

On the tours, there are expert guides who know the best places to see the bears and will also be able to tell you fascinating facts about the bear’s behavior, habitat, and life cycle.

The tours will allow you to view the bears from a safe place, such as a specially designed bear viewing platform or boat.

The grizzly bear tours in Vancouver Island are a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see bears up close and are definitely worth the expense.

You can also get the chance to view bears in the wild by staying in a bear lodge on Vancouver Island.

Canada Travel Planning Guide

🚑  Should I buy Canada travel insurance?

100% YES!  — Canada has “free” healthcare but it’s only for citizens! Foreigners visiting need travel insurance in case anything happens on their visit. I recommend World Nomads – starting at just $5 a day!

💧 Can you drink the water in Canada?

Yes  — In all major cities in Canada, you can drink the tap water. There are very few, rural areas that you can’t. However, you should never drink river or lake water anywhere in the country! I recommend a Brita Water Bottle for long hikes and backcountry camping to stay safe and hydrated.

🚙💨  Is it safe to rent a car in Canada?

Yes  — Renting a car is a necessity in most of Canada! If you want to go on road trips or adventures outside of the major cities, you’ll need to rent a car. ( Read more )

📲  Will my phone work in Canada?

Maybe  — Some American companies work in Canada, but many will not. If your phone doesn’t work in Canada, I recommend getting a Canadian SIM card so you can get around and stay in contact with loved ones. We don’t have a lot of free WIFI in Canada, so you’ll need your phone for maps.

🏩  What’s the best way to book my Canada accommodations?

My go-to for Canadian hotels is Booking.com . For hostels, I use Hostel World . If you want a home-y feeling, check out VRBO (which is cheaper and safer than Airbnb).

Or get free accommodations with Trusted Housesitters!

✈️  What’s the best site to buy Canada flights?

For finding cheap Canadian flights, I recommend  Skyscanner .

🎫  Do I need a visa for Canada?

Likely Not  — US, UK, and EU passport holders don’t need Canadian visas. However, some other countries do ( check here! ). And if you plan to stay for more than 4 weeks (an average tourist visa length), you will need to look into visas to live in Canada.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

grizzly bear band tour 2023

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

grizzly bear band tour 2023

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

grizzly bear band tour 2023

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

grizzly bear band tour 2023

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
