Ever since I first tried the fried chicken here a few years ago, I will always have a craving for it whenever I go back to Genting Highlands.

This is because the fried chicken just tastes SO good! I love the crispy fried skin, the moist and tender chicken meat, and the fragrant meaty scent. I always feel super satisfied after this simple fast food meal.

My masseuse even placed a heated blanket on my body halfway during the massage because I was feeling a little cold. After the massage, we were served with hot ginger tea.

There is another outlet located at First World Hotel lobby, but it is significantly smaller and the ambience is not as serene.

Best Time to Visit Genting Highlands

Generally, the months of March to September are considered the best time to go due to the dry season. Temperatures are mild and there is little rainfall. However, during this time, visitors can expect larger crowds and longer queues at attractions, particularly on weekends and public holidays.

For those who prefer cooler weather and fewer crowds, the months of October to February offer a more tranquil experience. However, it’s important to note that this period coincides with the rainy season, which is not ideal for the outdoor theme park, as it will be closed during rain. The mountain roads leading to Genting Highlands can also be treacherous when there is heavy rain or mist.

How to Go to Genting Highlands

Genting Highlands does not have its own airport; the only way to get there is by land. The most common route is from Kuala Lumpur , but there are also direct buses from other major cities in Malaysia including Penang, Ipoh, Malacca , and Johor Bahru.

genting highland travel guide

The journey from Kuala Lumpur to Genting Highlands takes approximately one hour via the Karak Expressway. The winding roads offer scenic views of the surrounding mountain range and greenery. If you’re driving, make sure your vehicle is in good condition for the uphill climb and the steep descent.

Bus fare is around RM10.

Genting Skyway Cable Car

Express buses will only take you up to Awana Bus Terminal , and you will have to continue the rest of the way on the Genting Skyway cable car.

If you’re driving, you can also opt to park at the base station and take the cable car to the summit. Currently the longest cable car ride in Southeast Asia, with a length of 3.38 kilometers , the Genting Skyway ride offers breathtaking views of the rainforest canopy and surrounding mountains.

How to Get Around in Genting Highlands

If you’re planning to see other attractions beyond the resort complex, driving offers the most flexibility and convenience. However, do note that parking can be limited and roads can be congested during peak periods.

You don’t have to worry about transportation within the resort complex, as the shopping malls and theme parks are connected by sheltered walkways and escalators . Genting Highlands is in Pahang , Malaysia which is famous for having Malaysia's only legal casinos , as well as theme parks, shopping malls and hotels.

genting highland travel guide

Genting Highlands — pronounced ghen -ting with a hard "G" — is a self-proclaimed "City of Entertainment". The primary draw is that Genting Highlands is home to the only legal casinos in Malaysia. It also features theme parks, shopping malls, hotels and convention centres. The resort offers six hotels with 10,500 rooms, over 50 fun rides, 170 dining and shopping outlets, shows, business convention facilities and entertainment options. As a plus, being up in the highlands means it's cooler than the steamy lowlands. Genting Highlands attracted 28.7 million visitors in 2019.

Those seeking natural beauty should visit the Chin Swee Temple, located slightly below the main attraction Resorts World Genting, a temple located in the middle of tropical forest where one needs to ride the Awana Skyway to reach the place, passing through the cloudy forest, or Resorts World Awana, a resort with an 18-hole golf course, jungle trekking, camping and bird watching.

Unlike many of Malaysia's other hill stations , Genting Highlands was not built by the British during colonial times; it was only built following independence by the late Malaysian-Chinese businessman Lim Goh Tong in 1965.

Orientation

Orienting yourself in Resorts World Genting is simultaneously easy and difficult. There are no "streets" of any kind; instead, all the gigantic buildings are connected with a vast warren of well-signposted walkways, tunnels and escalators. Nevertheless, you can easily spot any staff as you walk around and they will be more than happy to give you direction. Although not applied uniformly everywhere, you can always find naming directions written in combination of English, Malay and/or Chinese.

Located at an altitude of 1,800 m (5,900 ft), temperatures in Genting Highlands are a good 10°C lower than in Kuala Lumpur , generally staying in the 15-25°C range, and rarely falling below 14°C. The lowest recorded temperature ever was 8.4°C. On a clear day, there are stunning views down into the valley — but when it's raining in Kuala Lumpur, Genting Highlands is swathed in rolling clouds and visibility drops to zero. Thanks to the walkway system, you almost never need to venture outside (except when visiting the outdoor Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park), but hotel rooms are unheated and can get chilly at night.

The nearest airport is in Subang, Selangor . From there, take train (28 min) to KL Sentral then connect to the bus from there. The second nearest airport is Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Sepang, Selangor. Express train (to KL Sentral), limousine and taxi services are available from the airport to Genting Highlands.

From northern region of Peninsular Malaysia, take train to Batang Kali Station and transfer to Aerobus Shuttle Service for destination to Genting Highlands. Bus departure times are at 9:30AM, 11:30AM, 2:30PM and 6:30PM. From the southern region, take train to KL Sentral and transfer to the express bus service to the highlands.

By car and taxi

Genting Highlands can be reached by car from Kuala Lumpur in about 1 hr on the Karak Highway. An executive taxi from the centre of Kuala Lumpur to Genting Highlands costs RM150-RM200 whilst a regular taxi from the centre of KL to Genting Highlands costs around RM60-RM70. Ride hailing services will cost you around RM130-140 with the same destination. Limousine services are available to Genting Highlands from Johor (Johor Bahru), Kedah (Alor Setar), Melaka, Penang (Butterworth, George Town), Perak (Ipoh) and Selangor (KLIA/KLIA2).

genting highland travel guide

There are frequent buses operated by from various points in Kuala Lumpur (first bus at 9:00AM), including KL Sentral train station (two hourly), Gombak (two hourly), Pudu Sentral (two hourly), Jalan Pekeliling (two hourly), Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (two hourly), Klang Sentral and Shah Alam. Booking in advance is advisable as services can sell out, especially on weekends.

All buses take around one hour and cost from RM9.90 one way, with most terminating at the bus terminal below Awana Skyway cable car Awana Station, from where it's an 10-minute ride up to the summit of Genting Highlands (RM10 one-way in a standard gondola; the top cable station is in SkyAvenue). It is slightly cheaper to buy a combined bus and cable car ticket, costing RM20. With 10,500 rooms to choose from, there are usually plenty of beds at Genting Highlands. On weekdays in the off-season, rooms can be relatively cheap indeed, but demand is highly seasonal and the hotels fill up fast during festive holiday seasons, thus early reservation is highly recommended. All rooms are unheated and can thus get chilly at night!

All hotels are run by Resorts World Genting and share the same reservations centre, reachable online or by calling ☏ +60 327181118 .

Usually these accommodations will provide free shuttle transport to and from Resorts World Genting.

There are also cheaper accommodations available a couple of kilometres down the slope from the cable car base station, such as:

Casinos are generally very safe. Casinos take security very seriously and have cameras recording almost every square inch of their property, as well as uniformed security personnel patrolling at all times. There are two police stations in the highland, one at the hill top next to Genting SkyWorlds Hotel and one at the bottom hill in Gohtong Jaya.

Temperature can go relatively low at night and in early morning, so visitors are expected to have warm clothes with them. When thick cloud passes by the highland, expect some drizzle for a prolonged time, thus having raincoat or umbrella can be beneficial. Be extra careful for the slippery slope floors at Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park during raining time.

Do you want to experience fabulous resort life in a ‘peak above the clouds’? Welcome to Genting Highlands Malaysia.

When you think of Malaysia, you’ll probably think of the sky-high Petronas Twin Towers or the picturesque Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur, its rich and diverse culture, and mouthwatering dishes. But there’s more to this Southeast Asian country that tourists have yet to discover.

Here’s an overview of this luxurious resort city—how to get around, what to expect, where to stay, and other information to make your visit memorable and comfortable.

Genting Highlands is located along the Titiwangsa Mountain Range in Pahang, bordering Selangor state. It is easily accessible by car but commuting can also be done.

You may take the Genting Express Bus from the different train stations but buses are usually fully booked because visitors buy tickets ahead of schedule. Second option is to take the cab. Haggle if you must. Taxi drivers would usually lure you to take the taxi especially if you’re running out of time.

Our taxi driver asked us to pay RM 160 (approx. PHP 2,200) but we shared the fare with 2 other tourists (Kumar and Kunal) so we paid RM 40 each (approx. PHP 550). We and our new found friends from India agreed to take the same route and share the cab fare going back instead of racing against the 4:00 PM bus trip from Genting to KL.

Our taxi driver was very friendly and accommodating. He became our instant tour guide and was enthusiastic to have some chit chat with us. He explained about Malaysia’s present air travel problems, gave us important information about tourist attractions, and the best part, he brought us to the chocolate store where there’s free chocolate tasting. I’m no sweet tooth, but the chocolates there are just sinfully delicious. After dropping by the chocolate store for 15 minutes, we proceeded to the cable car service station in Gohtong Jaya.

Our Genting Highlands itinerary

12:30 – 1:00 PM: Arrival at the cable car station. Bought the round-trip cable car tickets for RM 12 (approx. PHP 160) each. Be sure to book a round-trip ticket so you will not queue again to buy for the tickets going down. 1:00 – 1:30 PM: Queuing for the cable car Genting ride 1:45 PM: Arrival at the resort 2:00 PM: Lunch 3:00 – 4:30 PM : Stroll around the Indoor Theme-Park, Gallery, Stores, Casino 4:30 – 5:00 PM: Snow World, entrance ticket = RM 30 / person (approx. PHP 400) 5:00 – 6:00 PM: Back to the cable car area and queue for the ride down 6:00 – 7:00 PM: Back to KL Sentral 7:30 – 8:00 PM: KLCC 8:00 – 10:00 PM: Petronas Towers and Fountain Show @ KLCC 11:00 PM – Back to Sunway Putra Hotel

To get the most of your stay in Genting, you may opt to book a hotel there. If you’re just planning to stroll around the theme park, restaurants, casinos and other interesting stuff up there, a day trip is probably enough like what we did.

Genting Highlands is a hill station located 54 km away from the Sentral Station in Kuala Lumpur. The main attraction of this hill station, other than pleasant weather, is its integrated resort called Resorts World Genting, which has theme parks for children & families, a huge casino for legalized gambling, and several hotels to accommodate thousands of guests at any given time.

To give an idea of how large this place is, its largest hotel – First World Hotel – has 7351 rooms and is the largest hotel in the world. Despite that, there are days when this hotel gets fully booked. Such is the popularity of Genting Highlands among both Malaysian and foreign tourists.

Theme Parks

SkyWorlds Theme Park at Genting Highlands, Malaysia

There are two major theme parks in the resort – the outdoor Genting SkyWorlds, and the indoor Skytropolis. In addition, there are Ripley’s AdventureLand, Sky VR for virtual reality-based activities, two video games parks, and a bowling alley. That is not all, more carnival style games are available in some public areas, which you discover as you walk through the resort. You can book park and other attraction tickets online at promotional prices via this official link: https://rwgenting.com/en/hot-deals.html

Chin Swee Temple

Big Buddha at Chin Swee Temple, Genting Highlands

When it comes to sightseeing at Genting Highlands, Chin Swee Temple is the only outdoor option for most tourists. The temple was built by the same people who built the resort, and is dedicated to Master Qingshui, a Buddhist monk who lived from the year 1047 to 1101, and is worshiped as a deity in China.

How To Get To Chin Swee Temple

The easiest way to get to Chin Swee Temple from the resort is to use Awana SkyWay. Chin Swee is the middle station between the resort and Awana Bus Terminal. You need to buy an RM10 ticket for a complete one-way trip on the SkyWay, but there is an option of getting down at the temple and later re-boarding the SkyWay without paying any extra charge.

Resorts World Genting also operates a free shuttle bus between the temple and the First World Hotel which can be boarded from outside the main hotel lobby. The bus terminates next to the vegetarian restaurant at Chin Swee Temple. For the return trip to the hotel, one can board a shuttle bus from the same spot. The operating hours of the shuttle bus are between 9.00am and 8.00pm.

Hotels and Restaurants

First World Hotel Genting Photo by CEphoto, Uwe Aranas

At the time of writing this article, Resorts World Genting had six onsite hotels – Crockfords, Highlands Hotel, Genting Grand, Resort Hotel, Genting SkyWorlds Hotel, and First World Hotel. There is another hotel nearby – Resorts World Awana – which can be considered when hotels in the main resort are fully booked. Awana Hotel can be reached via a cab or by first using Awana SkyWay to reach Awana Bus Terminal and then taking a complimentary shuttle bus from there. The shuttle bus operates from 7.00am until midnight. Online booking of hotels at the resort is available on this website: https :// rwgenting.com/

When it comes to food, you will find anything you need in the resort, as long as you are not vegetarian or vegan. As it is, Resorts World Genting is built for carnivores. However, there are a few restaurants where vegetarian food can be found, prominently the vegetarian restaurant at Chin Swee Temple. Some Indian vegetarian food is available at Jom Makan Food Street, which is located near Malaysian Food Street on level 4, Sky Avenue.

All the hotels have their own restaurants, and there are innumerable independent restaurants dispersed all over the resort. If you are going to the resort for the first time, you may look for food on level 4 near the SkyWay station. There is quite a concentration of restaurants in that spot. On the same level, you can walk a little to Malaysian Food street for hawker style Malaysian food.

24/7 food is available on level 4 at a burger joint near the SkyWay station, and there is a 7-Eleven shop on the opposite side which is always open.

The main draw of the resort is its casino. There are actually two casinos, and both open 24/7. There is the old one – Casino Genting – located near Hotel Genting Grand and there is the new one – Sky Casino – located in Sky Avenue. Both are hugely popular and almost always crowded. Anyone who is 21 years of age or older can enter the casinos free of cost. However, entry is not allowed for Malaysian Muslims.

The casinos have 100s of modern slot machines and almost an entire range of table games that one would expect in an international casino. The resort issues casino membership cards to all new players free of cost, and these cards can be used to accrue reward points while gambling. Some free drinks, such as black coffee, flavored soft drinks, etc., are available at vending machines on the casino floors. Drinks, however, are not allowed at gaming tables.

How To Reach Genting Highlands

Scheduled bus services are available to travel to Resorts World Genting, both from Kuala Lumpur Airport and Kuala Lumpur city (Sentral Station). The buses drop passengers at Awana Bus Station, from where one has to shift to the SkyWay for the rest of the journey. The SkyWay terminates at level 4 of Sky Avenue, from where all areas of the resort are accessible.

One can also take a cab to reach the resort. From the airport, cab fare is approximately RM200 and from KL city, it is close to RM 120. One can save some money on the cab fare by using a Grab taxi, by downloading the Grab app on a smartphone.

The Ultimate Guide For Your Getaway To Genting Highlands

avatar-name

Aishah  •  Oct 12, 2019

Who else is bummed that the much-anticipated 20th Century Fox Theme Park is cancelled? ☹️

Credit:  Giphy

Well, fret not, for Genting itself is on the rescue! Plans to open the outdoor theme park still remains despite FOX's pull-out. While it may take some time before we can enjoy it, Genting's current theme parks and hotels are more than enough to keep us busy with fun - it is after all dubbed as "the city of entertainment"! So, here's our compilation on the things to see, do, and eat in Genting Highlands ?

How to get there?

If you're coming from KL by car, take the North-South Expressway and exit at Sungai Besi. Keep to the left of Karak Highway and turn to Genting Highlands. For public transportation, you can use the Genting Express Bus service available at One Utama Shopping Mall (Petaling Jaya), Terminal Putra LRT Gombak, Pudu Sentral, and KL Sentral Station. Tickets can be purchased at the respective bus stations and are priced between RM7.60 to RM8.50 per adult (one-way) and RM6.30 to RM6.70 for children (one-way), based on your boarding station. Take note that the ticket is inclusive of the Awana SkyWay cable car ride, which costs RM9 (one-way) if you were to buy it separately. You can use the same bus service for your return trip but keep in mind of the final departure time.

What to Do?

1. have a blast with their various theme parks.

No article on Genting is complete without mentioning one of their famous attractions - their scenic and much-loved cable car ride! There are two cable car systems serving Genting Highlands, the modern Awana SkyWay and the older Genting Skyway. Awana SkyWay is the main cableway while the latter is used when Awana SkyWay undergoes construction (which you can check on their website ) and during busy periods such as weekends and public or school holidays. If you're using their bus service, it'll directly bring you to the cable ride that's in operation. Fare wise, Awana SkyWay offers two types of gondolas - the standard one priced at RM9 per person and the glass-floor gondola faring at RM 18 per person. The Genting Skyway only comes in one variety (standard) which is RM 8 per person and its line starts from the town of Gohtong Jaya.

Regardless of which skyway you choose to board, expect to be in awe of the jaw-dropping scenery presented before you - the vast open sky and the calming greenery beneath and around you. Breathe in the crisp mountain air and fly up in style to the highlands where fun time awaits! ?
