Los Angeles Food Tour

Exploring America’s Culinary Frontier

tripadvisor-logo

AS FEATURED IN

food tour downtown los angeles

This 5 1/2-hour food tour dives into the incredible diversity and gastronomic depth of downtown Los Angeles through some of its oldest neighborhoods, exploring how the communities living in them earned the city its reputation as a culinary frontier. It’s a delicious side of L.A. even locals usually drive right by.

We’ll begin our day on this Los Angeles food tour in L.A.’s atmospheric Chinatown, which is experiencing a culinary renaissance. Here we’ll first sit down at a new spot – at once both modern and traditional – for a reinvented tea ceremony, followed by a taste of some of the most innovative tacos around. After a few other delectable stops in Chinatown, we’ll rummage through a tiny Vietnamese bodega to find L.A.’s preeminently delicious báhn mì and continue our walk down storied Olvera Street, stopping for taquitos at the spot where they were invented, before checking out Union Station and Pueblo de Los Angeles, including Avila Adobe, built in 1818 – the oldest existing residence in Los Angeles.

Traversing the Hollywood Freeway, we’ll stop to discuss how cars and then later freeways transformed Los Angeles into the postmodern paradise it is today before we make our way into the pedestrian-friendly backstreets of Little Tokyo to sample some of the most authentic – and delicious – Japanese food in America, from exquisite sushi to artisanal mochi. Walking down Broadway we’ll marvel at example after example of the city’s most impressive architecture and sample some of the best bites to be found inside L.A.’s oldest food market. All along the way we’ll stop for other surprises, both edible and cultural.

Our food journey may seem extensive, but it’s truly only a taste of the banquet laid out for the bold, the curious, and the intrepid as they continue to explore the seemingly boundaryless City of Angels.

The tour ends at the Civic Center. If you need, your guide can help you purchase a metro ticket back to where we started.

Refund policy

LA food tour reviews

How does lunch work.

Our food tour is a little different. While other tours charge more and give everyone the same thing, we charge less and recommend everyone bring an additional $20-$25 to buy food throughout the tour. This saves you money and gives you control over what you try. If your guide suggests chorizo tacos or vegan ramen and you want currywurst or a wood-fired pizza, go for it. Want to split with your family that’s traveling with you? That works, too. Between our two food hall stops, you’ll have lots of selection.

What if I have dietary restrictions?

Both of our foodie stops have a wide range of dining options, so there truly is something for everyone. Let your guide know if you have certain dietary restrictions, and they can help guide you to the right place to eat.

What is the rescheduling policy?

We understand plans change. You can always change your tour 24 hours or more before you tour. We offer a 100% refund up to 24 hours prior to your tour start time. Within 24 hours of your tour, we would have incurred hard costs and therefore cannot allow rescheduling or cancellation without costs.

When should I get there?

Plan to show up 15 minutes early. The tour starts promptly, and you may not be able to catch up if you arrive late.

What if it rains?

Our tours run rain or shine, so please check the local forecast to plan. In rare cases when we have to cancel for extreme weather, we’ll offer you the chance to reschedule or give a full refund.

What about gratuities?

Tips are always appreciated but never expected. They’re a great way to tell your guide they did an awesome job and show your appreciation.

Looking to get out of the busyness of the city and cruise around in a groovy 1970s VW van?

With this Malibu food tour , you can do that! And you get 4 wine tastings and a cheese, salami, and bread plate included.

Seems like a no-brainer to me.

“What an awesome tour of Malibu! Our guide, Alexy, was great! He took us to very beautiful and iconic spots. The wine tasting at Rosenthal’s was a nice experience complete with music, and cool ambiance. Being in the 1972 Volkswagen van, we were a tourist attraction ourselves. What a fun trip. Highly recommended!” Marlene F ( see more reviews )

This tour is 4 hours long and in that time you’ll cruise around the coastline, seeing some of LA’s most wealthy households and most picturesque coastline views. Take a walk on the Malibu Pier before heading off to see the Santa Monica Mountains.

multiple different colored donuts with various toppings on it

Now we all love Krispy Kreme, but you have got to see how the locals do it in LA.

The Underground Donut Tour comprises 3 stops, starting at the famous Randy’s Doughnuts. You may have seen this shop featured in a few films before.

“Jasmine was a great guide! Like touring Santa Monica with a friend. She’s funny, gave us the history of the donut shops and Santa Monica. The donuts were incredible! The Huckleberry in particular. We will be back.” Kim R ( see more reviews )

Then you’ll go to Sidecar Doughnuts for some creations that are almost too artistic to be eaten. Maybe they’d be better off in a museum.

You’ll also make a stop for churros. Depending on the group and the weather, the last stop is subject to change, but either way it’ll be delicious.

This tour is 2 hours long.

Final Thoughts: Best Los Angeles Food Tours

You can’t go wrong with any of these Los Angeles food tours. You’ll walk away feeling stuffed and maybe with a new favorite food.

If you ever need a reason to come back to LA, there’s always another food tour you can embark on!

LA: Food + History + Design Tour

What makes the LA: Food + History + Design tour different from other LA food tours?

Food: From French newcomers in the nineteenth century, to Italian immigrants of the early twentieth century, to successive waves of migration from China, Vietnam and Thailand in the last fifty years, each culture has left its mark on Los Angeles' culinary landscape. And we haven’t even mentioned Latin America or Japan yet! On this tour you’ll eat some of the best food that LA has to offer.

History: Los Angeles has a fascinating story too. Many of its oldest buildings, from when the tiny pueblo was infamous for being the most lawless and violent town in the Wild West, are still standing and you’ll even go inside one on this tour. Thought LA was just movie stars, beaches and Beverly Hills? Think again, we have a rich history going back to 1781.

Design: DTLA has some of the most iconic buildings in the world – City Hall, the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Eastern Columbia Building to name just three. On this tour you’ll also experience some beautiful interior spaces, from the Bradbury Building, to Union Station to the Art Nouveau lobby of a 1913 hotel. For over a hundred years Los Angeles has been a design capital and you’ll see exactly why.

15 L.A. restaurants and chains where a $15 budget goes far

• Show more sharing options
  • Copy Link URL Copied!

The cost of living in Los Angeles seems to increase by the day. Prices for necessities like housing, gas and groceries have all risen, while wages remain largely stagnant . For many, dining out has become a luxury, and even casual options may take you by surprise when you get the final bill.

L.A. restaurants are facing many of the same challenges and still weathering the effects of the pandemic, as well as issues such as loss of business from last year’s writers’ and actors’ strikes. A minimum wage increase to $20 an hour for California’s fast-food workers has many worried that value-minded mega-chains will be forced to raise menu prices, while another state law set to take effect on July 1 will prevent restaurants from adding unadvertised service fees and other costs to the end of a bill, which some restaurant owners predict will result in significantly higher menu prices .

Despite these hurdles, many local restaurants are still committed to providing quality food at prices that diners can afford. A recent quest to find meals for less than $15 turned up a lot of options that aren’t just limited to high-profile chains.

Southern California’s (usually) mild weather arguably makes our region the street-food capital of the U.S., with Mexican and Central and South American cuisines and tacos in particular dominating the scene. Palm-size street tacos range from $1.50 to $5 each, while burritos packed with meat, rice and beans can climb into the low double digits.

Weekend pop-ups and night markets can serve as laboratories for chefs hoping to launch eventual bricks-and-mortars in L.A.’s competitive market. Their menu items usually are priced lower than what you’ll find at sit-down restaurants as chefs refine their recipes and build their brands.

For mindful diners who want to eat economically while still supporting restaurants and workers, there are a handful of consumer practices that make all the difference. In addition to favoring cash over credit cards, many neighborhood spots rely on word-of-mouth to attract new customers, so be sure to spread the word when restaurants impress you with thoughtful dishes at accessible prices. Tipping is a given, even for takeout spots.

When possible, place orders in person or make delivery requests directly through the restaurant as opposed to using apps that charge fees for both parties. Many small restaurants rely on catering to stay in business, so consider a mom-and-pop spot for your next company party or birthday blowout. And remember, it costs nothing to be kind and patient with the people who are taking your orders and preparing your food.

From Wagyu shawarma in Studio City to health-focused mini-chains and Sonoran-style burritos, here are 15 places where you can get a satisfying meal for less than $15 (before tax).

Man killed, another wounded in shooting outside downtown Los Angeles bar

An investigation is underway Thursday after two men were shot outside a bar in downtown Los Angeles overnight.

The shooting was reported around 11:45 p.m. Wednesday outside the business located at 410 Boyd Street, Los Angeles Police Department Lt. Boyle confirmed to KTLA.

The address is associated with The Escondite, which offers food, live music and drinks, according to its website .

Investigators believe the two victims were outside the location when they were involved in an altercation with two other men.

One of those suspects then pulled out a handgun and shot at the two victims, Boyle said.

One victim, described as a 47-year-old Hispanic man, was pronounced dead after being taken to a local hospital.

The second victim, a Hispanic man of unknown age, was listed at a hospital in stable condition, Boyle said.

My Scenic Tour Over Los Angeles On United Airlines

aerial view of a city

I enjoyed an unusually scenic tour over downtown Los Angeles on United Airlines after my flight took a unique approach to Los Angeles International Airport.

Unique Approach Into LAX Gives Me A Scenic Tour Over Los Angeles On United Airlines

I’m a creature of habit. When I fly into Los Angeles, I always choose a window seat on the starboard side because the typical approach to LAX includes a routing with prime views of the city skylines from those window seats on the right side of the plane.

I booked my ticket from Seattle to LA weeks in advance and was annoyed that not a single window seat on that side of the plane was open in first class. I thought space might open as we drew closer, but it did not. I wound up with a window seat on the left side of the airplane and figured, oh well…no views of downtown today.

But that seat choice turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

On the flight, our routing took us on a loop around the LA basin that included amazing views directly over LA that I cannot recall experiencing before in my hundreds and hundreds of flights into LA (most on United, like this one).

a map of the ocean with a line of land and a map

After the flight, I looked up our approach and thought we must have taken the path we did because of evening congestion, but that does not appear to be the case. It seems this is the standard approach from Seattle…I looked at the flight path of my flight over several days and also others (like Alaska Airlines) and the approach is the same with an eastward approach over the LA basin, turning directly over downtown, and then a final westward approach to LAX.

Most United flights land on runway 7R/25R and are well positioned to pull into Terminal 7 on the south side of the airport. We landed in 6R/24L instead which meant a long taxi around the airport before finally reaching our gate.

a large airplane in a parking lot with cars

Bottom line: if you’re flying to Los Angeles from Seattle, choose an “A” seat for prime viewing of the City of Angeles.

Wait till you see my next post! 😉

' src=

Great pictures. I’m struck by how ugly the car-based infrastructure of Los Angeles is. The massive parking lots and enormous freeway exchanges really seem like a waste of space. It’s a shame to waste that space in a place that so many people would like to live.

' src=

Plenty of homeless encampments under said freeway exchanges.

' src=

It’s funny, I find the concrete road structures in California to be achingly beautiful, especially compared to the steel structures I’m used to. Like airports and aircraft, those roads are a monument to movement.

' src=

Other than for medical care , I cannot imagine anyone traveling to any big city .

Airports are crowded , connections are a marathon , people are difficult , etc .

' src=

When in west flow (which is most of the time) at LAX, flights from the North/Northwest use the IRNMN TWO arrival… which is the path your flight followed. Landing on 24R is typical. Left-side window views are of Malibu, UCLA, Beverly Hills, Hollywood, Dodger Stadium, downtown LAX (almost straight down) and, after the 180-degree right turn, SoFi Stadium. Views from the right side include LAX itself, then USC/Coliseum (before, during & after the 180-degree right turn) and, finally, In&Out Burger just before touchdown on 24R.

Flights from the East/Northeast use either the ANJLL FOUR or HLYWD ONE arrival. Landing on 25L is typical. The right side offers the better views of Big Bear, Ontario, the San Gabriel mountains, LA downtown, and SoFi stadium (if landing on 25L). Left side views are less interesting on this arrival, IMHO.

' src=

I got these same views when I flew SMF-LAX a couple months ago. Maybe it’s for most flights approaching from the north.

' src=

I had a similar routing flying LH last week.

' src=

On one of the photos of LAX, it appears as if an AA 777 is getting worked done at the UA hanger? Is that unusual?

' src=

What a depressing looking city, even from the air, I feel sorry for the poor buggers who have to live there, a million have escaped since Newsome’s dictatorship, so on second thoughts, I don’t feel sorry for them that are still there…. Spot the Yank LOL….

It’s not depressing. Maybe a little smoggy for you. Or could be just the marine layer of clouds.

@Robbo…..And you live in?

Oh, and from what I see, the population decline of California in 2023 was 75,00. That was California entirely, not Los Angeles. As well, it’s showing an increase in 2024. That would be a vast difference from your claim that Los Angeles has lost a million people.

Of course, given you sound like a Brit, it’s no wonder this is coming from someone whose economy is now officially smaller than the state of Mississippi.

' src=

L.A. is not a sad city. You must be a right wing, fear based American. You’re sad. Cheer up!

' src=

These arrivals are the norm. But not particularly different over the past two decades I have commuting from sf to La. Only difference is how long the downwind leg needs to be due to traffic. Heck you can go half way to ONT sometimes before you turn on to final.
