Ratings and Reviews

My email is no longer recognized. Every time I want to use the app it is painful process to log in. Please let us create a password and use face recognition to sign in. I have the app 2 stars because when I can use it, it’s great data. Right now I need a specific British Airways confirmation that is only found in the app, and not my email receipts and confirmations. It’s so frustrating not to be able to access the app! Please fix so I can log in again!

Terrible App

The app works less than a third of the time I try to use it. Often says its an unrecognized email and I cant login. I have to delete the app and reinstall it and then buttons wont work to make a selection so you can only get so far before ending in frustration (and no reservations). The only option is to call and face a lengthy hold time for an expensive call for someone to make a simple car rental or flight reservation for you (we have to use FCM for company travel or I would book elsewhere). A travel app that almost never works from a mobile phone is useless, 1 star is too high but it wouldn't let me pick 0.

App Support doesn’t exist

I’m a FCM customer and am having an app issue. I called technical support to get help and they told me they don’t support the app. The app support link in the Apple App Store takes you the same people that don’t support the app. My issue still exists.

How to make a traveller’s emergency contact card in 5 easy steps

I’m on a mission. It’s to convince you to do one of two things:

1. Make a traveller’s emergency contact card — a simple card containing contact information that could be useful in an emergency.

2. Assess your present system for storing and readily accessing emergency contact information. If there’s room for improvement, consider making some changes.

What is a traveller’s emergency contact card?

A traveller’s emergency contact card is a physical credit-card-sized card containing emergency contact numbers and related details. With a few cards scattered throughout your belongings, emergency contact information is within easy reach at all times.

Reasons to pack an emergency contact card

• If you lose your credit card, you’ll need to report it as lost or stolen without delay.
• If you lose your wallet, a Good Samaritan will want to contact you without delay.
• If you require emergency medical treatment, someone needs to call the insurance plan administrator. Many policies specify this needs to be done before seeking treatment.
• You need assistance from your country’s nearest embassy or consulate. What’s the toll-free 24-hour number for consular services? 
• There may be a situation when your ICE (In Case of Emergency) contact needs to be called. You know the person’s name and number, but you might not be in a position to convey that information to someone else.

It helps to have this type of information at your fingertips, or available to others if you’re not able to speak for yourself.

How to make a traveller’s emergency contact card

If the idea of a traveller’s emergency contact card appeals to you, follow these five easy steps to make a DIY version.

Step 1: Find a laminating tool

The card will last longer if it’s laminated. Information could change from time to time, so the cheaper and more convenient option may be to buy a self-laminating tool from your local dollar store. Look for a pack of self-laminating cards or a self-laminating luggage tag kit. Self-laminating cards are also available online.

Step 2: Identify what to put on the card

Gather your financial cards, passport, insurance documents, information on consular services, and anything else with information that’s handy to have in an emergency. Here are some suggestions on what to include:

• country of citizenship and passport number
• your phone number and email address
• name and telephone number of at least one ICE contact
• toll-free numbers of the financial institutions that issued your debit and credit cards
• 24-hour number for consular services
• name of the company or administrator of your emergency medical insurance, policy number, and toll-free number.

Step 3: Create a document containing the information

If you have a lot of information to include, or prefer larger print, there’s always the option to use both sides of the card. Just be sure to place “OVER” or “TURN” or an arrow to direct the reader to the other side of the card.

Insert text to create a one-sided or two-sided card. Copy and paste the text as many times as it takes to create the number of cards you’d like to make. I find a table in Microsoft Word works well as it usually means that just one page of paper needs to be printed.

If you’re adept at word processing, you’ll nail the draft on your first try. Your travel wallet is a logical place to carry one of the copies. When sizing things up, there will be a slight overlap of the laminating material around the edges so take that into consideration. 

Step 4: Print one copy

Print one copy and assess the size of each card. Place a laminating pocket over the text. Go ahead and laminate one card to make sure it fits in the laminating pocket and your travel wallet. If not, you might need to change the font type or size, and print another copy. If it’s a good fit, print as many copies as you need. With a ruler and pencil, create borders so each card has a straight edge for cutting.

Step 5: Laminate the desired number of cards

You’ll want to strategically distribute your cards throughout your belongings. Keep in mind that these places aren’t just for you to be able to put your hands on a card in a hurry. There may be a time when you’re not in a position to do so. A travelling companion, first responder, or Good Samaritan needs to be able to readily access the information so place the cards where they can be found. Here are some suggestions:

• travel wallet
• pocket in a phone case
• passport sleeve
• security belt or wallet
• identity pocket in outerwear
• outer pocket of each bag

Cut out each card and laminate it. The self-laminating pockets are small enough that it’s an easy task to press down on the laminating film without creating wrinkles or bubbles.

Other thoughts

Another approach is to have a business centre or office supply depot handle Steps 4 and 5. They’ll have a colour printer, and paper cutting and laminating facilities. For a nominal fee, they’ll get the job done.

Did your travel insurance provider send you a card containing your policy number and telephone number to call in an emergency? If so, laminate it and slip it into your wallet. Another suggestion is to carry laminated copies of the information page of your passport.

The emergency contact card is a great idea! During my travels, I’ve seen situations where people had travel insurance but couldn’t contact the company themselves as they were hospitalized. It then becomes essential for someone else to be able to communicate with third parties on your behalf.

This is SUCH a great idea! I’ve been a professional traveller for years and have never made one myself – I’ve always used ones from my insurance or just hoped I’d not get into an emergency. Definitely making one for my next adventures!

I think this is a great idea. One question though: Is this dangerous if someone steals your wallet and then has all your info?

It’s definitely a consideration. My info on the emergency contact card is limited. I like to think that if I can’t speak for myself, my citizenship and emergency medical insurance policy information is more important to first responders than it is to an identity thief. I’ve read of horror stories of travellers ending up in an emergency room of a hospital and not having proof of insurance coverage. Read: delays and possible treatment denied. I’ve also seen examples of travellers who’ve had their passport stolen at the scene of an accident and had it not been for other information indicating their citizenship, consular support and transportation to another country would not have been possible. As you’re suggesting, it’s a balancing act between protecting personal information while at the same time providing helpers (travelling companions, Good Samaritans, first responders, consular staff) with information to provide assistance in an emergency.

History of Novosibirsk Oblast

Over thousands of years, the territory of the Novosibirsk region, due to its location on the border of natural zones and cultural regions (the Siberian taiga and the Eurasian steppe), played the role of a buffer zone or border zone of different peoples.

In the 13th-15th centuries, this land was the eastern outskirts of the Golden Horde. Later, until the end of the 16th century, it was part of the Siberian Khanate. In the 18th century, the territory of the present Novosibirsk region became part of the Russian Empire.

Despite the relatively favorable climate, the Russians began to settle here relatively late. The Barabin Tatars were the indigenous people. Today, their total population is about 10,000 people living mainly in the western parts of the region.

The Barabin Tatars were subjected to constant attacks of the Kalmyks (the Oyrates and Teleuts). Russian villages were also under the threat. That’s why people preferred to settle in the north, near Tomsk. Only at the end of the 17th century, Novosibirsk province became attractive to settlers.

More Historical Facts…

The first settlement was founded by the boyar son Alexey Kruglik in 1695. Later, this settlement became the village of Kruglikovo. Today, it is located in Bolotninsky district. In the early 18th century, Berdsky stockaded town was built. Over time, the threat from the nomads decreased and the number of settlers increased.

In 1722, the Siberian line of fortresses along the Irtysh River was constructed. The locals were mainly engaged in soil tilling, fishing and hunting. In the early 19th century, the famous Ural manufacturer Akinfiy Demidov constructed two copper melting plants here - Kolyvansky and Barnaulsky.

In 1893, due to the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway and the railway bridge across the Ob River, Alexandrovsky settlement was built (from 1895 - Novonikolayevsky). Thanks to its convenient geographical location (the Trans-Siberian Railway crossing the Ob River, transportation ways connecting Siberia with the European part of the Russian Empire), its trade importance grew rapidly. In 1909, Novonikolayevsk became a town. In 1925, it was renamed in Novosibirsk.

Before 1921, the territory of Novosibirsk oblast was part of Tomsk gubernia, from 1921 to 1925 - of Novonikolayevsk gubernia, from 1925 to 1930 - of Siberian krai, from 1930 to 1937 - of West Siberian krai. September 28, 1937, West Siberian krai was divided into Novosibirsk oblast and Altay krai. This date is considered the official date of the region formation.

Novosibirsk Oblast - Features

Novosibirsk Oblast is located in the south east of the East-Siberian Plain, in the steppe, forest-steppe and taiga zones, between the Ob and the Irtysh rivers. The length of the region from west to east - 642 km, from north to south - 444 km.

The southern part of Vasyugan swamp, the largest swamp in the world, occupies the territory in the north and north-west of the province. In the southwest, it borders with Pavlodar oblast of Kazakhstan.

There are about 3,000 lakes on the territory of the Novosibirsk region. The largest lakes are Chany, Ubinskoye, Sartlan. Novosibirsk Reservoir also known as “the Ob Sea” (1,082 sq. km.) was created for Novosibirsk Hydroelectric Power Plant.

The climate is continental. The average temperature in January ranges from minus 16 degrees Celsius in the south and minus 20 degrees Celsius in the north. The average temperature in July - plus 18-20 degrees Celsius.

The largest cities and towns are Novosibirsk (1,621,000), Berdsk (103,500), Iskitim (54,700), Kuybishev (43,000). Novosibirsk is one the largest industrial, transport, scientific, and cultural center of Russia, the third most populous city in the country after Moscow and St. Petersburg. It is also the capital of the Siberian Federal District.

In the historical part of Novosibirsk you can find a lot of preserved monuments of the Russian Empire times. The Soviet era is presented by numerous scientific and cultural attractions, as well as beautiful parks.

There are more than 500 deposits of various mineral resources in Novosibirsk Oblast (coal, refractory clay, peat, anthracite). Natural gas and oil fields are located in the north-western part of the region. There are significant reserves of underground thermal and mineral waters. Forests cover about 4 million hectares, more than 20% of the territory.

Novosibirsk Oblast is one of the most industrially developed regions in Siberia (metal processing and machine building, food, power engineering, non-ferrous metallurgy industries). Heavy industries are concentrated in Novosibirsk, Iskitim and Berdsk.

The regional agriculture specializes in the cultivation of grain, potatoes and vegetables. Dairy cattle breeding, poultry farming and beekeeping are developed. The production of flax plays an important role too. Agricultural development of the territory is not high (about 48%). In general, it has about 25% of all agricultural land in Western Siberia.
