Susan Bruno knows the business, and even if you think you can find a cheaper/better flight or travel plan on the internet, think again. Susan makes it so easy; she works with your timeline and budget. Again, we are really satisfied with the level of service and expertise at Executive Travel Center.

We booked a trip to France and England last year with Susan Bruno at Executive Travel Center, based in Rocklin, CA. What might have been a stressful trip turned out to be a memorable one; with numerous hotel stays, train transfers, metro passes, etc. and Susan provided all and all went well. We stayed at lovely hotels in Paris and London, all within our price range. We also went to a cooking school in the Loire Valley, all found by Susan, and couldn't have been better. We will definitely be using Susan's services again.

Not worthy of a travel agency. I tried to book my family vacation with the owner and had never been treated so poorly. The owner was rude and acted as if I was wasting his time. Save your money and work with real professionals that really cares about their business.

Live updates: Hurricane, surge watches issued for Tampa Bay region

  • Jack Prator Times staff
  • Christopher Spata Times staff
  • Tony Marrero Times staff

Tampa Bay residents should prepare for Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine, local officials say, with the storm expected to become Hurricane Helene once it enters the Gulf of Mexico Wednesday.

As of the National Hurricane Center’s 5 a.m. advisory on Tuesday, a stretch of Florida’s west coast including Pinellas and Pasco counties was under a hurricane watch. That means hurricane conditions are possible within 48 hours.

Hillsborough County was among the counties under a tropical storm watch.

The Tampa Bay region was also part of a long swath of the coast that was under a storm surge watch. And a flood watch has been issued for many counties including Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco and Hernando.

The system was expected to develop into Tropical Storm Helene on Tuesday, and the advisory showed the storm reaching major hurricane strength — a category 3 or higher, with sustained winds of at least 111 miles per hour — as it approaches Florida’s west coast Thursday.

Gov. Ron DeSantis ordered a state of emergency in 41 counties Monday, activating the Florida National Guard and allowing the state’s transportation officials to waive road tolls, among other things.

St. Petersburg, Dunedin and Pinellas Park have joined Pasco County in opening free sandbag locations. Find a list of places to pick up sandbags here . Stay here for more live updates.

10:50 a.m. Pinellas County declares state of emergency

The Pinellas County Commission declared a state of emergency on Tuesday as officials warned residents to prepare for the possibility of record storm surge from a hurricane making landfall on Florida’s panhandle later this week.

Predicted to pass less than 100 miles offshore on Thursday with a wind span of 250 miles, current models project the storm could bring up to 8 feet of storm surge in Pinellas, according to County Administrator Barry Burton.

“That’s far greater than anything we’ve seen,” he said.

Burton told county commissioners during an emergency meeting Tuesday that evacuations are likely but that officials will “make that call as conditions on the ground warrant” because projections are unpredictable and could change.

Pinellas remained under a hurricane watch, storm surge watch and flood watch on Tuesday.

“This has the potential though to be a very dangerous storm,” Burton said. “We only have one opportunity to prepare and that’s now.”

Pinellas County emergency management director Cathie Perkins said the area could see tropical storm force winds by 8 a.m. Thursday with a departure at 7 p.m.

“This is a very fast moving storm,” she said.

There is risk of trees being uprooted and power lines ripped out, she said.

There is 3 to 6 inches of rain projected, with 10 inches possible, according to Perkins. Elevated water levels could last 24 to 36 hours, she said.

The state of emergency gives authority to Burton to make emergency purchasing decisions.

Officials warned residents to visit www.disaster.pinellas.gov to confirm their flood zones, make preparations for the storm and stay up to date on the forecast and shelter information.

If evacuations are called, people in mobile homes and vulnerable populations in coastal low lying areas and hospitals and long term care facilities would be affected first.

“You should be making your plans today, have your preparedness materials today,” Perkins said. “We want to make sure that everybody is ready because this storm is coming and we are going to feel impacts here locally.” — Tracey McManus

10:45 a.m. Pinellas schools to close Wednesday and Thursday

After consulting with the county emergency management department, the Pinellas County school district announced it will close all schools and offices Wednesday and Thursday.

All sports and school activities for those two days also are canceled. Tuesday’s sports and activities are set to take place as scheduled.

The district will provide additional updates on its website at pcsb.org/weather and on its social media. — Jeffrey S. Solochek

10:25 a.m. Citrus schools announce closures

As it prepares some campuses to serve as evacuation shelters, the Citrus County school district will not hold classes on Thursday or Friday.

School will take place as planned for a Wednesday half day.

The district also has canceled all after-school activities and YMCA before- and after-school programs for Wednesday through Friday.

The district will provide periodic updates on its website and social media. — Jeffrey S. Solochek

10:20 a.m. Gov. DeSantis: “Prepare yourselves accordingly.”

Gov. Ron DeSantis on Tuesday warned Floridians all across the state to be prepared for a storm that could possibly become a major hurricane as it heads toward landfall.

DeSantis, at a news conference from the state’s emergency operations center, stressed that people still had time to prepare before the storm makes landfall, which is currently expected on Thursday evening.

The state expanded a state of emergency to cover 61 counties in Florida, up from yesterday’s 41 initial counties covered by the declaration. That includes Pinellas, Hillsborough and Pasco.

Though current models project the storm hitting Florida’s panhandle or the Big Bend region, DeSantis told residents to not “get wedded to these cones.”

Certain counties, like Pinellas, could see impacts and floodwater even if the storm is miles and miles away, DeSantis said.

“There is a lot of uncertainty with this storm, but the one thing that is certain is we are going to see some impacts, so prepare yourself accordingly,” he said.

DeSantis said the National Hurricane Center has never before projected that a storm will become a major hurricane at this point in its development, like it has with this tropical cyclone. But he said there are similarities to Hurricane Michael’s track, which may have helped forecasters predict how the storm will intensify as it moves over the Gulf.

Hurricane Michael hit the Florida panhandle as a Category 5 storm in 2018.

“There’s still some uncertainty, but I think the fact this would be forecasted as a major at this point without formation shows that this has the potential to be a really really significant storm,” DeSantis said.

DeSantis and Florida Division of Emergency Management Director Kevin Guthrie also warned Floridians to listen to evacuation orders as they come.

Guthrie said that evacuation calls in low-lying areas are likely in the next 12 to 24 hours as county emergency management directors make their calls.

People evacuating don’t need to drive across the state, DeSantis said, but just need to find higher ground.

“It’s the water that can be really, really devastating if you remain there when you’re told to evacuate,” he said. — Romy Ellenbogen

10:15 a.m. Crews preparing Tampa’s stormwater system for onslaught

Stormwater crews across Tampa are “aggressively working to ensure the drainage systems are clear of debris,” the city said Tuesday morning, as residents prepare for the impending arrival of a storm system expected to rapidly intensify in the Gulf of Mexico in the coming days.

Prior to Tropical Storm Debby in August, the crews removed more than 84 tons of debris from drainage ditches and street sweeping operations.

“A similar, all-hands-on deck approach is underway now and will continue ahead of this week’s weather event,” city officials said.

”We are prepared. We are doing everything we can to keep you safe,” Mayor Jane Castor said in a statement to residents Tuesday morning. “But we need you to be responsible as well.” — Olivia George

10:05 a.m. Hernando County schools to close Wednesday and Thursday

Anticipating effects of the oncoming storm, Hernando County schools announced they will be closed Wednesday and Thursday. The district is preparing to use some of the campuses for evacuation shelters.

The closure includes classes, district office operations, after-school activities and before- and after-school childcare programs.

Officials said they have not made a decision for Friday. — Jeffrey S. Solochek

10 a.m. Eckerd College to evacuate St. Petersburg campus

Eckerd College announced Monday night that it will evacuate its St. Petersburg campus.

Students must be out of residents halls by 11 a.m. Wednesday and the campus will be closed by 2 p.m.

The waterfront liberal arts college is inside the three-day cone and expects “to feel the most severe impacts, including heavy rain and storm surge,” according to the announcement.

The campus will remain closed until an “all clear” message is issued.

9:30 a.m. Sandbag scenes in Tarpon Springs

Times photojournalist Doug Clifford captured some scenes of Tarpon Springs residents stocking up on sandbags Tuesday morning at the city’s Splash Park sandbag site at 508 Live Oak St.

8:55 a.m. St. Petersburg sandbag site in full swing, then closed

Dozens of cars were in line early Tuesday morning as sandbag distribution got underway at St. Petersburg’s Stormwater Pavement and Traffic Operations Building.

About an hour and a half after the city opened this location, traffic had slowed along Ninth Avenue North as the line of cars had spilled out onto the main roadway. Then, the city announced in social media posts shortly before 9 a.m. that the site had been closed.

The city had incorrectly listed the Stormwater Pavement and Traffic Operations Building as one of its main sandbag locations, a spokesperson said. The site provides sandbags year-round but closes during storms.

But there are several other full-service sandbag sites in St. Petersburg that will be open today from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Wednesday — or until weather permits:

  • Lake Maggiore Park Shelter Area, 3601 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St. S.
  • Northeast Park East Baseball Field Parking Lot, 955 62nd Ave. NE
  • Northwest Swimming Pool parking lot, 2331 60th St. N.

City spokesperson Alizza Punzalan-Randle said 15,000 sandbags had been distributed in total from Monday through Tuesday morning.

In an update at 10 a.m., she said that 4,000 sandbags were handed out in the previous hour.

Pinellas County regularly reminds residents that while sandbags can reduce the amount of floodwater entering your home, they won’t stop water completely. Sandbags won’t protect against storm surge but are recommended for residents who could see flooding less than 15 inches, according to the county. — Max Chesnes, Jack Prator and Colleen Wright

SANDBAG OPERATIONS UPDATE: Emergency sandbag operations are OPEN from 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. today + tomm, Sept. 25 - or until weather allows. The SPTO Building (1744 9th Ave. N.) has now CLOSED its sandbag operations. 8 a.m. National Hurricane Center issues latest advisory

Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine continued to move north and had maximum sustained winds of 35 mph with higher gusts, according to the National Hurricane Center’s 8 a.m. advisory.

The system was about 150 miles west-southwest of Grand Cayman and moving west at 9 mph. It remained poorly organized but was still expected to become a hurricane Wednesday.

The forecast called for the disturbance to move across the northwestern Caribbean Sea overnight Tuesday and then gain speed over the eastern Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday and Thursday.

7:15 a.m. Rainfall totals in Tampa Bay region could reach a half foot or more

Rainfall totals from what is expected to become Hurricane Helene could climb beyond six inches in the Tampa Bay area, according to Spectrum Bay News 9.

“About 3 to 6 inches of rain, potentially higher amounts depending on the future track,” the station said in a post on X Tuesday morning.

The post noted the area is under a flood watch through Friday morning.

6:15 a.m. Several feet of storm surge expected for Tampa Bay region

The National Hurricane Center’s Tuesday morning advisory showed the Tampa Bay region should be preparing for several feet of storm surge from the system that is expected to become Hurricane Helene.

A hurricane center graphic shows Tampa Bay is part of a long stretch of coastline that could see 5 to 8 feet of surge.

Some areas north of the region, closer to where the forecast track shows the storm making landfall, could see surge as high as 15 feet.

Evacuations had not been called in Tampa Bay as of early Tuesday morning, but residents should review their evacuation zones to be ready.

Pinellas County’s zones can be found here, Hillsborough County’s are here , and Pasco County’s are here.

6 a.m. St. Pete braces for surge

The city of St. Petersburg is bracing for coastal storm surge flooding that could begin as soon as late Wednesday.

In a news release Monday afternoon, city officials said they are putting in pump stations in Riviera Bay and Shore Acres and positioning generators. City staff are also cleaning storm drains in low-lying areas and checking grates and inlets.

All non-childcare Parks & Recreation programming after 5 p.m. on Wednesday is canceled. — Colleen Wright
