Frequent travelers have probably heard a time or two about the United Excursionist Perk. But, by and large, this benefit tends to be underrated. Whether you’re a United loyalist or not, the Excursionist Perk can provide tons of value — especially when you get creative to maximize those savings.

Let’s take a look at what the United Excursionist Perk is, how to use it, and the best ways to take advantage of it.

First things first: what exactly is the United Excursionist Perk? If you’re unfamiliar with the program, you may be surprised to hear that the Excursionist Perk will give you a free flight on award flights . Note that it doesn’t apply to all flights — you’ll need to book a multi-city flight using your United MileagePlus miles in order to qualify. This is built-in automatically to your flight search, and we’ll show you how to conduct this search below.

So what’s the point of the Excursionist Perk? Ostensibly, it’s United’s way of rewarding travelers with a free stopover . Let’s say you fly from the U.S. to Paris, then Paris to Frankfurt, then Frankfurt back to the U.S. United will charge you for both legs to and from the U.S. but will give you the Paris to Frankfurt leg for free.

An important thing to know is the free flight will be in the same fare class you booked for your original flight. If you’re traveling in economy, your free leg will be in economy. If you’ve booked in business, your free leg will be in business .

While a free flight from Paris to Frankfurt is nice, there are plenty of ways to stretch this perk, even for flights worth over a thousand dollars.

The United Excursionist Perk does have some limitations:

• The Excursionist Perk cannot be used in the MileagePlus defined region where your travel started. As an example, if your journey began in North America, you’d only get the Excursionist Perk if your travel is in a region outside of North America.
• Even if you’ve booked multiple awards that would qualify for this perk (in 1 itinerary), only the first qualifying leg will be free.
• Travel must end in the same MileagePlus defined region where travel originates.

Naturally, the United Excursionist Perk is only available to those with United MileagePlus accounts . The frequent flyer program is free to sign up for — and in case you haven’t already — you should always sign yourself up for rewards programs when booking flights or hotels.

You’ll need to use your United MileagePlus miles to fly . Although United is a Star Alliance partner , you can’t book through other common reward programs like Air Canada Aeroplan or Avianca LifeMiles.

If you don’t have enough United MileagePlus miles to book yourself at least 2 one-way tickets, you’ll need to earn some more. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to do so.

You can always earn miles by flying, though like the other Big 3 carriers in the U.S., United will award you miles based on the fare of your ticket, not how far you’ve flown. The award miles you earn will also vary on your elite status:

These earnings only apply on flights marketed and ticketed by United. If you’ve purchased a ticket with and are flying a partner airline, you’ll earn miles according to a different chart based on distance flown and fare class. This applies differently according to each airline, so you’ll want to check it out before booking.

Transferring Points

United is a transfer partner of Chase Ultimate Rewards , which means you can transfer over your Chase Ultimate Rewards points at a 1:1 ratio . Transfers are instantaneous and Chase Ultimate Rewards points are easy to earn, as we’ll outline below.

You can also transfer your Marriott Bonvoy points to United at a rate of 3:1.1 with a 5,000-mile bonus for every 60,000 points you transfer.

Bottom Line: There are plenty of ways to earn United MileagePlus miles , whether you’re looking to transfer from a partner, use a credit card, or take an actual flight. 

United doesn’t exactly give this benefit a ton of publicity. You’ll only find it when doing a multi-city search that falls under the above qualifications. One of the most important of these to understand is how United defines its regions. This is because your free leg has to both start and end in the same geographic region as defined by United:

This is a lot of information to take in at once. But the most important thing to note here is how broad some of these geographic regions are . Yes, you can fly from Paris to London and it’s all in the same region.

But by the rules of the Excursionist Perk, you could fly from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to Cape Town, South Africa, which is a 6.5-hour flight. You could also fly from Fiji to French Polynesia without changing regions, or head from Kazakhstan to the Maldives on that complimentary flight.

Does all this make sense? No, not really. Not when countries like Japan and South Korea are separated into different regions. But because of these definitions, we have some room to play with Excursionist Perk flights .

Hot Tip: Be aware that you’ll need to find award availability for these flights, which may be difficult when employing some truly wacky routing. 

In order to complete searches using the Excursionist Perk, you’ll first want to navigate to United’s website . Once there, click Advanced Search.

Once you’re on the advanced search page, select Multi-city . You’ll also want to select Miles rather than Money.

From here you can input all your flights and dates. Remember, you’ll need at least 3 one-way flights in order to make this work, and they’ll need to be eligible according to United’s rules. After this, simply scroll down and hit Find Flights .

We’ve already talked about the standard examples for using the United Excursionist Perk, but there are ways to really maximize this by playing around with United’s rules and region definitions. Let’s take a look at our first example.

Say you wanted to make a grand trip from the U.S. through Africa. You’re only using award miles for this, which means you’re going to want to stretch them as far as you can. One way to maximize this perk is by stretching your free flight out as long and as far as possible using United’s region definitions .

Here’s how your itinerary might look:

• Flight 1 — Newark (EWR) to Cape Town (CPT)
• Flight 2 — Cape Town (CPT) to Addis Ababa (ADD)
• Flight 3 — Addis Ababa (ADD) to Newark (EWR)

And here’s how it looks on the map:

For the first leg, you’re looking to fly out of Newark (EWR) to Cape Town (CPT) in South Africa in economy class, which will cost you 40,000 United MileagePlus miles:

After South Africa, you’d like to head up to Addis Ababa (ADD) in Ethiopia — though the distance is far and flights aren’t cheap. By using the United Excursionist Perk, you can snag this leg without paying any additional miles :

You’re then planning on heading back to Newark (EWR) from Addis Ababa (ADD):

All in, you’re out of pocket for a total of 80,000 miles plus ~$80 in taxes and fees. But what have you saved by maximizing the Excursionist Perk? The cash cost of that second-segment flight would be $587:

As you can see, it’s a pretty pricey 6.5-hour flight. But what about in terms of miles?

Without using the Excursionist Perk, you’d instead be forking over 19,300 miles for that same flight. If you understand how United defines its regions, you can get great value when employing the Excursionist Perk.

Bottom Line: Maximizing United’s geographic regions can net you free flights that would be otherwise long and pricey without the United Excursionist Perk.  

The above example is a good way to get value, but we can stretch this even further by taking a long, hard look at United’s rules for the Perk. For this example, we want to focus on these 2 rules in particular:

• The Excursionist Perk cannot be used in the MileagePlus defined region where your travel started. 

What does the above mean, in practice? It means if you’re starting out in the U.S., your free flight cannot take place in the U.S. It also means that your final flight must end in the U.S. Other than that, however, you can go wild.

Now let’s say that you still want to go to Africa, except you’ve decided you’re going to be in Angola and then head to Seychelles. (No, we don’t know what kind of trip you’re on either, but bear with us.)

Both of these locations are within the same region as we’ve outlined above, which means we can use the Excursionist Perk to get from Angola to Seychelles. But let’s say you don’t have enough miles to fly all the way to Africa first. Or perhaps you found an awesome paid fare that you’re wanting to take advantage of — whatever the reason, you don’t want to use your United MileagePlus miles to get all the way to Africa.

You can still take advantage of the Excursionist Perk to score that free flight by flying short-haul inexpensive United flights within the U.S.

Here’s what your itinerary might look like:

• Flight 1 — Los Angeles (LAX) to Las Vegas (LAS)
• Flight 2 — Luanda (LAD) to Victoria (SEZ)

For our final example, we’re going to go ahead and flip this around. As we mentioned above, your travel must begin and end in the same region. Your free flight must also take place in a separate region.

But what happens if you start your flights outside North America? Ever wanted to try out United’s Polaris product on a flight across the U.S. ?

United's MileagePlus program has undergone significant changes. Earlier this year, United increased award prices by up to 122% on some routes without notice. United also launched Money + Miles , which allows MileagePlus members to redeem miles at an underwhelming 1 cent apiece toward cash airfare.

Despite these unfavorable program changes, one valuable feature of the United MileagePlus program is the Excursionist Perk. It allows you to add a one-way flight to a round-trip award ticket without using extra miles. The rules for this perk are not well defined, but it is an extremely valuable tool for award travel.

Understanding and using the Excursionist Perk may be challenging for beginners and even some advanced readers. It requires time and effort, but it may allow you to redeem United miles for fantastic award itineraries at a low cost.

What is the United Excursionist Perk?

At its core, the Excursionist Perk is meant to give a free one-way segment to travelers on round-trip itineraries between two different regions as defined by the MileagePlus program . The United website is incredibly vague when defining the Excursionist Perk, which leaves ample room for creative minds to stretch the bounds of this perk. Here are all the rules published by United for the Excursionist Perk:

• The Excursionist Perk cannot be in the MileagePlus-defined region where your travel originates. For example, if your journey begins in North America, you will only receive the Excursionist Perk for travel within a region outside of North America.
• Travel must end in the same MileagePlus-defined region where travel originates.
• The origin and destination of the Excursionist Perk are within a single MileagePlus-defined region.
• The cabin of service and award inventory of the free one-way award is the same or lower than the one-way award preceding it.
• Only the first occurrence will be free if two or more one-way awards qualify for this benefit.

Here's what I believe to be the easiest way to paraphrase the rules into one sentence describing the Excursionist Perk: The first route within a single MileagePlus-defined region that's different from the region in which your itinerary begins and ends is free in the same class as the preceding leg.

For an example of the simplest (and likely intended) use of the Excursionist Perk, consider a round-trip business-class award flight between Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and London's Heathrow Airport (LHR).

By invoking the Excursionist Perk, you can get a free segment within the region you're visiting (as long as it's a different region than where you're starting). This means you could book the following itinerary for the same number of miles as a simple round-trip award:

• Newark to London
• London to Brussels
• Brussels to Newark

Here's the itinerary priced out using United's multicity search functionality.

You pay no additional miles compared to only flying between EWR and LHR, but you'll also get to see Brussels and conveniently return home directly from there to Newark. You'll even save $200.90 by minimizing the United Kingdom's high departure taxes on your ticket.

When you book the LHR to Brussels Airport (BRU) segment, you'll notice United charges zero miles for it.

The process is pretty straightforward, and at face value, United could win customers over with this seemingly nice benefit.

Book United Excursionist itineraries online

You can (and should) book United Excursionist itineraries online. All you need to do to book a United Excursionist award itinerary is to use the "Advanced search" tool on the United homepage.

Select the "Multi-city" option, and plug in the segments you want to book. You must check the box to show the price in miles, as the Excursionist Perk doesn't apply to paid tickets.

If your itinerary follows the Excursionist logic, it will price correctly. There's no extra button to select or special page to price these tickets correctly. The free Excursionist leg will automatically appear as costing zero miles (any additional taxes and fees will also show). There's no minimum or maximum stay requirement for the stopover.

United Excursionist examples

Below are four examples of Excursionist itineraries in which we apply the perk's base logic to real-world award itineraries. These itineraries illustrate the Excursionist Perk's principles rather than serve as exact itineraries you should fly.

The East Asian Excursionist hopper

Starting in South Korea, you can see various cities and countries on a single ticket.

For example, you could fly between the following airports:

• Seoul's Incheon International Airport (ICN) to Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK)
• BKK to Manila's Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL)

Doing so would result in United charging you zero miles for the BKK-MNL segment.

The Ecuadorian and Galapagos Excursionist turtle

If seeing the Galapagos turtles is near the top of your to-do list, you might also want to visit other destinations in the region. With this itinerary, you can cover Ecuador's two major cities and the Galapagos Islands for a minimal outlay of miles.

For this itinerary, you'd fly in and out of these airports:

• Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) to Mariscal Sucre Quito International Airport (UIO)
• Guayaquil, Ecuador's José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport (GYE) to the Galapagos' Seymour Airport (GPS) on Baltra
• GPS to IAH via UIO

This is among the simpler itineraries on the Excursionist Perk, but it still represents great value. Start in Houston (or anywhere in the U.S.), visit both Guayaquil and Quito, Ecuador, for as long as you want, then visit the turtles (and other wildlife) in the Galapagos before flying back to the U.S. All you're responsible for is getting from Quito to Guayaquil, an easy proposition.

The itinerary is from the U.S. to the northern part of South America and starts at 30,000 miles each way in economy. IAH-UIO and GPS-IAH each start at 30,000 miles for a total of 60,000 miles.

With this itinerary, you'd notice that United would charge you zero miles for the GYE-GPS segment.

Dynamic pricing equals dynamic value for the United Excursionist

The consensus is that dynamic pricing is a terrible development for award travelers seeking outsize value for their miles. However, there are times when it can work to your advantage. One such way is with the Excursionist Perk.

Consider this scenario: You're based in California and have a trip planned to Thailand and Indonesia in January. You need a one-way flight from Jakarta, Indonesia, to Bangkok, which normally sets you back at least 19,300 miles in economy.

However, rather than jumping to book that option, consider the following:

• San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
• Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK)

SFO-LAX is sometimes available from 5,500 miles each way. So, you could nest your one-way CGK-BKK flight between trips to Los Angeles. All you'd need to do is go home from Los Angeles the first weekend and then down to Los Angeles the second weekend (potentially using an alternate form of transportation). This entire itinerary might cost just 11,000 miles and $29.90.

You're thus getting a round-trip flight from SFO to LAX and your desired CGK-BKK flight for fewer miles than if you booked the CGK-BKK flight alone.

Just be aware that you must fly the first leg of the flight; if you don't, the rest of your itinerary will be canceled.

Choosing this Excursionist itinerary would result in United charging you zero miles for the CGK-BKK segment.

The independent Excursionist

You can take this theory even further if you like to plan and are willing to have three or more trips at a time on the books. This itinerary demonstrates the Excursionist Perk's basic logic rather than something you'd want to fly.

For this itinerary, you'd fly:

• Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) to San Francisco International Airport (SFO) via a business saver award
• Johannesburg's O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) to Kotoka International Airport (ACC) in Accra, Ghana, via a business saver award
• Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) via an economy saver award

The itinerary begins and ends in the same zone (the mainland U.S.), making the first segment wholly within another region (Central and Southern Africa) free. In this case, the itinerary costs 36,900 miles.

The flight from Baltimore to San Francisco is ticketed as a business saver award for 30,000 miles in our example, which triggers the middle flight (Johannesburg to Accra) to be in business class, too — and for no additional miles.

That's a six-hour South African Airways business-class flight on a lie-flat seat for no additional miles.

As in the last example, purchasing the Excursionist leg by itself would take almost as many miles as the entire multicity booking.

The economy saver flight from Boston to Newark is 6,900 miles in our example.

So, you're effectively getting a first-class flight from Baltimore to San Francisco and an economy-class flight from Boston to Newark at no additional cost if you can reframe how you think about the Excursionist Perk so as to view it as simply beginning and ending in the same zone — even if it means coming from another zone back to the original departure zone.

Booking this itinerary would result in United charging you zero miles for the JNB-ACC segment.

United Excursionist tips

Based on our tests, here are some additional tips and rules about the Excursionist Perk. Because United's written rules are so vague, we can't confirm this hypothesis with 100% certainty and look forward to hearing if your experience differs from the following.

• The free leg must be booked in sequential order, in between the first and final segments. Even though the United booking engine suggests a non-sequential itinerary would still be zero miles, you can't book a free segment at the end of a round-trip itinerary. In other words, you can't book Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) round trip and then add a free intra-Europe flight in the future.
• After multiple searches, you need to clear your cookies and start over on United.com. The search engine begins to say there are errors and no results after several queries.
• During the multisegment search, the seven-day and 30-day options may error out and say nothing is available even when flights have award space. You must change your search dates in the multicity search function to find available dates.
• There are no maximum segment or maximum permitted mileage limitations on United Excursionist itineraries.
• Don't forget about open jaws , which are possible when using the United Excursionist Perk. If you can travel on your own to get to the next city where your ticket picks up, you've added yet another destination to visit for no extra miles.
• Study the regions of the United MileagePlus award chart. Large regions typically hold the most potential value, as those longer interregional segments will be free. Booking the cheapest intraregion routes (i.e., Japan to Japan) means you still get the more expensive Excursionist leg free. It doesn't matter if the Excursionist leg costs twice as much as the intraregional flights (see the dynamic pricing example above).
• Don't call United. I spoke with five agents on United's Premier 1K line, and only one knew about the United Excursionist Perk (and not by name). Your agent may have no idea what you're trying to do, and if you get an ill-informed one, you'll be on hold for hours and still end up with bad information. We highly recommend only using United.com when researching and booking Excursionist itineraries.

Finally, you may consider adding a cobranded United credit card to your wallet if you're serious about booking these itineraries. Cards like the United Explorer Card provide additional award availability on United-operated flights , which can noticeably impact the options you see at the saver level.

3. Opaque Fares

Opaque fares are generally used by online travel agencies. In the case of opaque fares, flights are presented to the buyer without the exact data regarding the carrier airline, flight number, or seating before the transaction is complete. These tickets are also often paired with hotel bookings, creating a package. The buyer is unable to determine the exact worth being offered by the agency because of the lack of a fare breakdown. Thus giving the fare its name “opaque fare”.

These fares often come with significant discounts if the buyer or traveler is flexible with their plans but comes with certain conditions like being unchangeable and non-refundable.

Private fares being the most common of the three, has many types of fares clubbed under them. Let’s take a look at what they are.

4. Apex Fares

Apex fares are discounted international or long-distance fares. They come with certain stipulations attached like being non-refundable or needing extra charges for seat selection or making changes post-booking.

5. Discount Fares

Discount fares are highly discounted fares sold for a very short time usually a few days to a week before a flight in the form of a “seat sale”. They almost always are non-refundable and non-changeable.

6. Full Fares

Full fares are what one can describe as walk-in fares. These are expensive and are the base rate for any seat on any airline. They can be bought on the day of the flight. Discounted fares refer to this price when setting the discounts.

7. Joint Fares

Joint fares are charged when more than one airline is involved in getting the traveler from their initial boarding place to their eventual destination. These fares usually include a layover or stopover during the journey.

8. Through Fares

This fare is involved in journeys where two-way tickets are bought, however, the airport of departure for the return ticket, and the destination for the initial journey are not the same. 11. Multi-city Fares

Published Versus Unpublished Airfares

Most people don't know the difference between a published and a non-published airfare. But before you buy an airplane ticket, this information may be helpful to you. Published fares are what you see on airline websites and flight tracking sites like Skyscanner, Orbitz, Expedia, TripAdvisor, and Priceline. Meanwhile, unpublished fares are special discounted rates that are only attainable through travel agents or all-inclusive tours or packages—you cannot find these fares on your own.

Published Airline Fares

Basically, a published fare is one that is available for purchase by anyone. You could call the airline, or check for prices online, and published fares will be immediately available for purchase.

The rules of such fares are readily available and if there is more than one airline offering the same fare you can count on the rules being virtually the same. A non-refundable fare requiring advance purchase of 14 days and a minimum Saturday night stay would be typical of the rules for published fares. Seat sales launched by airlines are considered published fares as well since (subject to seat availability) such airfares are offered to the public.

There are several types of published fares for airlines which include unrestricted full fares (meaning you have flexibility to change or cancel tickets), discount fares, and excursion fares. Through fares are another kind of published airline fare that offers discounts to passengers willing to layover in the airline's hub city. For example, Icelandair and WOW Air both offer affordable flights from America to Europe but often has layovers in Iceland (and encourages travelers to explore beyond the airport by helping them plan transportation and activities during the layover). The main point to be made in advising travelers is to be sure and read the fine print on all published fares so you know the limitations you'll be agreeing to when you purchase your ticket.

Unpublished Airline Fares

Unpublished fares are an entirely different beast and are not something every traveler knows about. They may be seats that a consolidator purchased and can offer at highly discounted rates. The fare rules could require anything from absolutely no changes allowed to free changes as long as availability exists. They may or may not allow for advance seat selection or the accumulation of frequent flyer miles. If you call an airline looking for the rules to an unpublished fare you would be out of luck. They are not offered for sale by the airline online or over the phone with the airline.

Unpublished airfares are also known as private fares or consolidator fares, or, sometimes, wholesale fares. They can be up 20 to 60 percent off the regular fare. If you are working with a tour company you may be already taking advantage of this saving. Otherwise, a way to find them is to check with a travel agency. Travel agencies have special agreements with airlines. They may incorporate the savings in an over-all itinerary price as they work with you. It's worth a try to compare pricing.

Thousands of WestJet customers are scrambling after the airline cancelled more than 30 flights ahead of a possible strike by its plane mechanics this Thursday.

In an update Wednesday afternoon, the airline said about 6,500 travellers were booked on the cancelled trips, scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday. WestJet said the move reduces the potential for stranded passengers and ensures the carrier can avoid abandoning aircraft in far-flung locations.

Some 670 WestJet mechanics, represented by the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association, are poised to walk off the job as early as Thursday evening after serving the airline with a strike notice earlier this week following months of negotiations.

The Calgary-based company has requested that the Canada Industrial Relations Board intervene with binding arbitration, which would see the labour tribunal hammer out a contract between the two sides — their first collective agreement. In the meantime, the board could bar a work stoppage, a measure WestJet is counting on as the cancellations rack up.

Union members voted overwhelmingly to reject a tentative deal last week and opposed the airline's request for arbitration this week.

Passenger protection regulations entitle customers to a full refund in the original form of payment for the cancelled trips, said Gabor Lukacs, president of the Air Passenger Rights advocacy group.

If the strike goes ahead and WestJet cannot rebook passengers within 48 hours of the original departure time, the airline must "buy passengers seats on competitor airlines — at WestJet's expense," Lukacs said, citing the Air Passenger Protection Regulations.

For trips cancelled before the possible work stoppage, he argued that the carrier must rebook customers on competitors' flights if they cannot get them on board WestJet planes within nine hours of the slated departure. The airline would also be on the hook for meals and accommodations as well as compensation — distinct from a refund — of between $400 and $1,000, depending on the length of the delay.

"If I were an affected passenger, I would give WestJet one chance to rebook me on a competitor. I would record the call/interaction. If ignored or refused, I would buy a ticket on a competitor, and then make WestJet pay for all the expenses plus the standard (passenger rights) compensation," Lukacs said.

The airline said Wednesday it will make "every effort to re-accommodate disrupted guests."

As of Wednesday afternoon, the 31 cancellations comprised 18 for that day and 13 on Thursday. They touched cities ranging from Toronto and Vancouver to Regina and Grande Prairie, Alta.

Busy domestic routes such as Toronto-Calgary and popular leisure flights including Vancouver-Las Vegas saw cuts. But many more will be necessary if no move is made by the labour tribunal as the clock ticks down toward 7 p.m. MST on Thursday — the earliest possible strike hour.

The industrial relations board said it will be ready to "deal with these matters as expeditiously as possible."

A meeting between the parties was scheduled for Wednesday, "and the board will then determine next steps, as appropriate," spokesman Jean-Daniel Tardif said in an email.

WestJet president Diederik Pen said the airline was "immensely disheartened" to cancel trips and start parking planes after receiving the 72-hour strike notice.

"We know the situation is creating stress and uncertainty for anyone with upcoming travel plans. To our guests, the communities and businesses that rely on our service, we're truly sorry," he said in a videotaped statement Wednesday.

The contract rejected by union membership included provisions to boost take-home pay by 30 to 40 per cent in the first year, which would have made WestJet's plane mechanics the highest paid in the country, Pen claimed.

The union said Monday it opposes WestJet's request for arbitration because the process could undermine aircraft maintenance engineers' (AMEs) bid for greater contract gains.

"If adopted by the Canada Industrial Relations Board, it would utterly frustrate the AMEs' goal of reaching an industry-changing contract because arbitrators are generally driven by industry 'norms' — the same norms that have kept AMEs under the heel of management and industrial unions which favour the unskilled majority," the negotiating committee claimed in a statement Monday.

Labour Minister Seamus O'Regan said federal mediators continue to work with both parties this week.

"Mediators are at it. So things are proceeding and we're supporting them at the table where the best deals are made," he told reporters Tuesday.

WestJet cancels flights to prepare for potential mechanic strike

WestJet said on Wednesday it has started canceling and consolidating flights as it prepares for a strike by its aircraft maintenance engineers and other technical operations employees.

In preparation for the expected strike , set to begin at 9 p.m. ET on Thursday, WestJet said it was canceling 40 flights over June 18-19, affecting 6,500 customers.

WestJet Airlines' mechanics union said on Tuesday it gave the carrier a 72-hour strike notice.

The strike covers about 681 aircraft maintenance engineers and other skilled employees, the union said.

The Canadian Industrial Review Board is holding hearings on Wednesday over the dispute between the carrier and the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association union. The labor board could take a range of actions, including ordering arbitration.

"So in the short term, there may be some flights disrupted, but I’m hoping that ‒ I’m hoping that cooler heads will prevail," Canadian Labor Minister Seamus O'Regan told reporters in Ottawa on Wednesday.

WestJet, which is backed by Onex Corp and which competes with rival Air Canada, is facing demands from employees for improved working conditions and higher salaries.
