Eminem Announces Official Release Date For 'Revival'

This will be the GRAMMY-winning rapper's first LP release since 2013's GRAMMY-winning 'The Marshall Mathers LP 2'

After months of teases, a brand-new single , and one of the most elaborate viral marketing campaigns we've seen in recent memory, Eminem's latest album, Revival , finally has a release date. Dr. Dre made the official announcement this morning via Instagram .

Continuing the elongated marketing campaign that's been grabbing headlines since late this past summer, the video announcement came in the form of a advertising spot with an actor presenting an apparent testimonial for a spoof pharmaceutical aimed a treating the fake disease "Atrox Rithimus."

Partway through the video, the actor reveals what pretty much everyone who's been following the campaign had already figured out: Yes, Revival is actually the name of Eminem's new album, and no, we're not going to get any additional details on it before it comes out. (The latter piece of info came packaged with a bit of Eminem's signature irreverent humor).

Revival will hit store shelves and streaming services on Dec. 15.

New Music Friday: Listen To New Albums & Songs From Eminem, Maya Hawke, ATEEZ & More

Dive into the weekend with music that’ll make you dance, brood and think — by Jessie Reyez, Ayra Starr, Adam Lambert, and many more.

After the cookouts and kickbacks of Memorial Day weekend, getting through the workweek is never easy. But you made it through — and now it's time for another weekend of however you decompress. As always, killer jams and musical food for thought have arrived down the pipeline.

As you freshen up your late-spring playlist, don't miss these offerings by artists across generations, moods, genres, and vibes — from K-pop to classic country and beyond.

Eminem — "Houdini"

It looks like Dua Lipa isn't the only artist to name-drop Erik Weisz this year. In a recent Instagram video with magician David Blaine, Eminem hinted at a major career move, quipping, "For my last trick, I'm going to make my career disappear," as Blaine casually noshed on a broken wineglass.

With Em's next album titled The Death of Slim Shady , fans were left in a frenzy — was he putting the mic down for good? If "Houdini" is in fact part of Eminem's final act, it seems he'll be paying homage to his career along the way: the song includes snippets of Em classics "Without Me," "The Real Slim Shady," "Just Lose It" and "My Name Is."

The superhero comic-themed video also calls back to some of the rapper's iconic moments, including the "Without Me" visual and his 2000 MTV Video Music Awards performance. It also features cameos from the likes of Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, and Pete Davidson — making for a star-studded thrill ride of a beginning to what may be his end.

Maya Hawke — 'Chaos Angel'

"What the Chaos Angel is to me," Maya Hawke explained in a recent Instagram video , "is an angel that was raised in heaven to believe they're the angel of love, then sent down to do loving duties."

Chaos Angel , the third album by Maya Hawke, out via Mom+Pop Records, is an alt-rock treasure with a psychologically penetrating bent. Smoldering tracks like "Dark" and "Missing Out" plumb themes of betrayal and bedlam masterfully.

Jessie Reyez & Big Sean — "Shut Up"

Before May 31, Jessie Reyez 's 2024 releases have come in the form of airy contributions for Bob Marley: One Love and Rebel Moon . And for the first release of her own, she's bringing the heat.

Teaming up with fellow rapper Big Sean for "Shut Up," Reyez delivers some fiery lines on the thumping track: "They b—es plastic, that b— is a catfish, oh-so dramatic/ And I'm sittin' pretty with my little-ass t—es winnin' pageants." Big Sean throws down, too: "B—, better read the room like you telepromptin'/ And watch how you speak to a n—a 'cause I'm not them."

Foster the People — "Lost In Space"

Indie dance-pop favorites Foster The People — yes, of the once-inescapable "Pumped Up Kicks" fame — are back with their first new music since 2017's Sacred Hearts Club . The teaser for their future-forward, disco-powered new song, "Lost in Space," brings a psychedelic riot of colors to your eyeballs.

The song is equally as trippy. Over a swirling, disco-tinged techno beat, the group bring their signature echoing vocals to the funky track, which feels like the soundtrack to an '80s adventure flick.

"Lost in Space" is the first taste of Foster The People's forthcoming fourth studio album, Paradise State of Mind , which will arrive Aug. 16. If the lead single is any indication — along with frontman Mark Foster's tease that the album started "as a case study of the late Seventies crossover between disco, funk, gospel, jazz, and all those sounds" — fans are in for quite the psychedelic ride.

Arooj Aftab — 'Night Reign'

Arooj Aftab landed on the scene with the exquisitely blue Vulture Prince , which bridged modern jazz and folk idioms with what she calls " heritage material " from Pakistan and South Asia. The album's pandemic-era success threatened to box her in, though; Aftab is a funny, well-rounded cat who's crazy about pop music, too. Crucially, the guest-stuffed Night Reign shows many more sides of this GRAMMY-winning artist — her sound is still instantly recognizable, but has a more iridescent tint — a well-roundedness. By the strength of songs like "Raat Ki Rani" and "Whiskey," and the patina of guests like Moor Mother and Vijay Iyer , this Reign is for the long haul.

Willie Nelson — 'The Border'

By some counts , Willie Nelson has released more than 150 albums — try and let that soak in. The Red Headed Stranger tends to crank out a Buddy Cannon -produced album or two per year in his autumn years, each with a slight conceptual tilt: bluegrass , family matters , tributes to Harlan Howard or the Great American Songbook . Earthy, muted The Border is another helping of the good stuff — this time homing in on songwriters like Rodney Crowell ("The Border"), Shawn Camp ("Made in Texas") and Mike Reid ("Nobody Knows Me Like You.") Elsewhere, Nelson-Cannon originals like "What If I'm Out of My Mind" and "How Much Does It Cost" fold it all into the 12-time GRAMMY winner's manifold musical universe .

ATEEZ — 'GOLDEN HOUR : Part.1'

South Korean boy band ATEEZ last released new material with late 2023's The World EP.Fin: Will . Now, they're bringing the K-pop fire once again with their 10th mini-album, GOLDEN HOUR  Part.1 .

Released in a rainbow of physical editions , the release was teased by a short clip for "WORK," where ATEEZ pans for gold like old prospectors in an off-kilter desert scene, then proceeds to throw the mother of all parties. As for the rest of GOLDEN HOUR , they bring flavors of reggaeton ("Blind), wavy R&B ("Empty Box") and reggae ("Shaboom") — further displaying their versatility as a group, and setting an exciting stage for Part.2 .

Ayra Starr — 'The Year I Turned 21'

Beninese-Nigerian singer and GRAMMY nominee for Best African Music Performance Ayra Starr pays homage to the big two-one with her second album, The Year I Turned 21 , which she's been teasing all month. We've seen the crimson, windswept cover art ; we've soaked up the 14 track titles , which reveal collaborations with the likes of ASAKE , Anitta , Coco Jones , and Giveon . Now, after small tastes in singles "Commas,""Rhythm & Blues" and "Santa" (with Rvssian and Rauw Alejandro ), we can behold what the "Rush" star has called "excellent, sonically amazing" and "unique, because I've been evolving sonically."

Adam Lambert — "LUBE" & "WET DREAM"

The " American Idol " and Queen + Adam Lambert star is turning heads — for very good reason. He's going to release AFTERS , a new EP of house music and an unflinching exploration of queerness and sex-positivity. "I throw many house parties and my aim was to create a soundtrack inspired by wild nights, giving a voice to our communities' hedonistic desires and exploits," Lambert explained in a press release.

The first two singles, "LUBE" and "WET DREAM," achieve exactly that. From the pulsing beat of "LUBE" (along with the "Move your body like I do" demand of the chorus) to the racing melody of "WET DREAM," it's clear AFTERS will bring listeners straight to a sweaty dance floor — right where Lambert wants them.

10 Times Hip-Hop Has Given A Voice To Mental Health: Eminem, J. Cole, Logic & More Speak Out

From the message of "The Message" to Joe Budden's vulnerable podcast and Jay-Z speaking about the importance of therapy, read on for moments in the history of hip-hop where mental health was at the forefront.

In a world of braggadocio lyrics, where weakness is often looked down upon, hip-hop can often seem far from a safe place to discuss mental health.

But underneath its rugged exterior, hip-hop culture and its artists have long been proponents of well-being and discussing the importance of taking care of one's mental health. Openness about these topics has grown in recent years, including a 2022 panel discussion around hip-hop and mental health , co-hosted by the GRAMMY Museum, the Recording Academy's Black Music Collective, and MusicCares in partnership with the Universal Hip-Hop Museum.

"Artists are in a fight-or-flight mode when it comes to being in this game," said Eric Brooks, former VP of Marketing & Promotions at Priority Records who worked with NWA and Dr. Dre . "And there need to be strategies on how to deal with the inner battles that only happen in the mind and body."

The panel only scratched the surface of the many times hip-hop culture has illuminated critical mental health issues that often remain hidden or under-discussed in the music industry. In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, read on for 10 times hip-hop has shone a light on mental health.

J. Cole Apologized To Kendrick Lamar

A long-simmering beef between Drake and Kendrick Lamar was reignited in March 2024 when Metro Boomin' and Future released " Like That ." The track featured a scathing verse from Kendrick, where he took aim at  Drake and J. Cole , and referenced the pair's collaborative song " First Person Shooter ."

The single begged for a response, and J. Cole, under what was presumably a significant amount of pressure, surprise-released his Might Delete Later . The album featured "7 Minute Drill," in which Cole calls  Kendrick's  To Pimp, A Butterfly boring.

But the same week Cole's album came out, he apologized  to Kendrick onstage at his Dreamville Fest, saying it didn't sit right with his spirit and that he "felt terrible" since it was released. Cole added that the song didn’t sit right with him spiritually and he was unable to sleep. Cole subsequently removed "7 Minute Drill" from streaming services.

Strong debate followed about whether or not Cole should have removed the song. However, many heralded Cole’s maturity in the decision and said it was an important example of not doing things that don’t align with one's true emotions, and avoiding allowing others expectations of you weight down your own physical and mental health.

SiR Spoke Candidly About Depression & Sobriety

Although an R&B artist, TDE singer SiR is hip-hop adjacent, having collaborated with former labelmate Kendrick Lamar on tracks like "D'Evils" and " Hair Down ." SiR recently spoke with GRAMMY.com about the troubles that followed him after the release of his 2019 album Chasing Summer .

"I was a full-blown addict, and it started from a string of depression [and] relationship issues and issues at home that I wasn't dealing with," SiR says . After the Los Angeles-based singer had hit rock bottom, he found the spark he needed to do something about it. His initial rehab stint was the first step on the road to change.

"I was there for 21 days [in 2021]. [The] second time, I was there for two months and the third time wasn't technically rehab…I did personal therapy, and, man, [that] did wonders," he recalls.

SiR also tackled the stigma many Black communities place on therapy and seeking help for mental health issues. "I would've never done something like that if I was in any other position, so I'm thankful for my issues because they led me to a lot of self-reflection and forgiveness," SiR says.

Big Sean Educated His Audience About Anxiety & Depression

One of the biggest challenges in addressing anxiety and depression is the feeling that those issues must be kept under wraps.  In 2021, Big Sean and his mother released a series of videos in conjunction with Mental Health Awareness Month, in which the GRAMMY nominee opened up about his battles with depression and anxiety.

In one of those videos, Sean and his mother discussed  the importance of sleep and circadian rhythms when managing depression and mental health issues. In an industry that prioritizes the grind, the hip-hop community often overlooks sleep — much to its detriment.

"Sleep is the most overlooked, disrespected aspect of our well-being," said Myra Anderson, Executive Director & President of the Sean Anderson Foundation and Big Sean's mother. "Even one day without good sleep can mess up your hormones severely."

As a busy recording artist, Sean concurs that, for him, a lack of sleep contributes to challenges with anxiety. “If I’m not in the right mindset, I don’t get the right sleep,” says Sean in the mental health video series. “Then that anxiety rides high, and my thoughts are racing. I’m somebody that lives in my head.”

G.Herbo's "PTSD" Addressed The Impact Of Street Violence

Eastside Chicago's G. Herbo is an artist vital to the city's drill music scene. On "PTSD," the title track of his 2020 album, Herbo raps about his struggles coping with violence and loss.

"I can't sleep 'cause it's a war zone in my head / My killers good, they know I'm hands-on with the bread / A million dollars ahead, I'm still angry and seeing red / How the f*ck I'm 'posed to have fun? All my n— dead."

The lyrics echoed the realities of what G. Herbo grew up seeing in O-Block, considered by many to be one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Chicago . But it wasn't just a song title; G. Herbo was diagnosed with PTSD in 2019 and began therapy to manage it, showing that even rap's most hardened have opened themselves up to professional help.

"I'm so glad that I did go to therapy," G. Herbo  told  GRAMMY.com in July 2020. "I'm glad that I did take that leap of faith to just go talk to somebody about my situation and just my thoughts and get 'em to a person with an unbiased opinion."

Joe Budden Opens Up About His Darkest Times

In 2017, on the "Grass Routes Podcast," rapper-turned-podcaster Joe Budden opened up about multiple suicide attempts and his lifelong battle with depression.

"For me, there have been times where I've actually attempted suicide," Budden shared. "As open as I've been when it comes to mental health, it wasn't until retirement from rapping that I was able to dive into some of the things the fans have seen."

Never one to shy away from rapping about his mental health struggles, Budden songs like " Whatever It Takes " peel back the layers on an artist fighting his demons: "See, I'm depressed lately, but nobody understands / That I'm depressed lately, I'm sorta feelin repressed lately."

Budden continued to be a champion for mental health that year, including on his former Complex show "Everyday Struggle," where Budden  broke down  while discussing the suicide death of fellow rapper Styles P's daughter.

In recent years, Budden has uses his wildly popular "The Joe Budden Podcast" as a tool to discuss his own struggles and raise awareness of mental health issues.

Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five Broadcast A Serious "Message "

Hip-hop culture has long used rap as a tool to highlight mental health and the everyday struggles of its community. Released in 1982, Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five's "The Message" is an early, effective example of vulnerability in hip-hop.

"The Message" described the mental health impacts of poverty and inner-city struggle, describing desperate feelings and calling for support in underserved communities: "I can't take the smell, can't take the noise / Got no money to move out, I guess I got no choice." Perhaps the most recognizable lyric comes from Melle Mel, who raps, "Don't push me cause I'm close to the edge/I'm trying not to lose my head."

Eminem Got Honest About Depression While In Rehab

On "Reaching Out," Queen and Paul Rodgers sing "Lately I've been hard to reach / I've been too long on my own / everybody has a private world where they can be alone." These lyrics were sampled on the intro to Eminem 's 2009 single "Beautiful," a raw tale of the rapper's struggles with depression. Half of the song was written while Eminem was in rehab, including lyrics like "I'm just so f—king depressed/I just can't seem to get out this slump."

The lyrics pierced the core of Eminem's audience, who were able to see the parallels between the struggles of a rap superstar and their own issues. The song reached the Top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100 and was nominated for a Best Rap Solo Performance GRAMMY Award. In an  interview  with MTV about the song, Eminem said it was an important outlet for him at a challenging time.

But it was far from the first time Eminem has discussed mental health. One of the earliest examples was in his song " Stan, " where Eminem rapped from the perspective of an obsessed fan who ended up killing himself and his wife after Eminem failed to respond to his fan mail. In a 2000 interview , Eminem told MTV that he wrote the song to warn fans not to take his lyrics literally.

Logic Sparked Change With A Number

One of the most impactful moments hip-hop has seen regarding mental health and sparking change was when Logic released his song "1-800-273-8255" in 2017. The record, named after the real National Suicide Lifeline Prevention phone number, which is now 988, hit the top three on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Following the song's release, the British Medical Journal released a  study  sharing data that showed the song contributed to a 27 percent increase in calls to the prevention hotline that year and may have even contributed to an actual reduction in deaths by suicide.

Logic's single further proved that rap music's impact extends well beyond charts and sales. "1-800-273-8255" highlighted the connection artists have with their fans, as well as the ways music can be a tool to cope with challenges like mental health and suicidal thoughts.

Kid Cudi Opened Up About Suicidal Urges

Cleveland's own Kid Cudi has never shied away from putting his emotions on record, rapping vividly throughout his career about his struggles with mental health. Cudi records, like the hit single "Pursuit of Happiness," are brutally honest about trying to find happiness in a world filled with trials and tribulations.

In a 2022  interview  with Esquire , Cudi recalled checking himself into rehab in 2016 for depression and suicidal urges. He had been using drugs to manage the weight of his stardom and even suffered a stroke while in rehab. "Everything was f—ed," Cudi said.

Cudi took a break to develop stability, returning to the spotlight with the 2018 project Kids See Ghosts in collaboration with Kanye West.. Today, Cudi and his music remain pillars of strength for those facing similar challenges.

Jay-Z Detailed The Importance Of Therapy & Getting Out Of "Survival Mode"

In 2017, Jay-Z released his critically acclaimed thirteenth studio album. 4:44 was packed with lessons on family, mental health, and personal growth.

An  interview  with the New York Times , Jay-Z discussed how helpful therapy had been to him. Therapy helped the rap superstar in his interactions with other people — something that had been hardened growing up as a black man in Marcy Projects. "I grew so much from the experience," he told the Times .

"I think the most important thing I got is that everything is connected. Every emotion is connected, and it comes from somewhere. I understand that, instead of reacting to that with anger, I can provide a softer landing and maybe, 'Aw, man, is you O.K.? You're in this space where you're hurting, and you think I see you, so you don't want me to look at you. And you don't want me to see you,'" he said. "You don't want me to see your pain."

The album also unpacked Jay-Z's infidelity. "I'll f— up a good thing if you let me," he raps on "Family Feud." In the same interview, Jay-Z shared that growing up in the hood put him into "survival mode," impacting his abilities to be a good partner and husband earlier in life.

"You shut down all emotions. So even with women, you gonna shut down emotionally, so you can't connect," he reflected. "In my case, like it's, it's deep. And then all the things happen from there: infidelity."

4 Reasons Why Eminem's 'The Slim Shady LP' Is One Of The Most Influential Rap Records

Eminem’s major label debut, 'The Slim Shady LP,' turns 25 on Feb. 23. The album left an indelible imprint on hip-hop, and introduced the man who would go on to be the biggest-selling artist of any genre in the ensuing decade.

A quarter century has passed since the mainstream music world was first introduced to a bottle-blonde enfant terrible virtuoso who grabbed everyone’s attention and wouldn’t let go

But enough about Christina Aguilera .

Just kidding. Another artist also exploded into stardom in 1999 — one who would become a big enough pop star, despite not singing a note, that he would soon be feuding with Xtina . Eminem’ s biting major label debut The Slim Shady LP turns 25 on Feb. 23. While it was Eminem's second release, the album was the first taste most rap fans got of the man who would go on to be the biggest-selling artist in any genre during the ensuing decade. It also left an indelible imprint on hip-hop.

The Slim Shady LP is a record of a rapper who was white (still a comparative novelty back in 1999), working class and thus seemingly from a different universe than many mainstream rappers in the "shiny suit era." And where many of those contemporaries were braggadocious, Eminem was the loser in his rhymes more often than he was the winner. In fact, he talked so much about his real-life childhood bully on the album that the bully ended up suing him .

It was also a record that played with truth and identity in ways that would become much more difficult once Em became world famous. Did he mean the outrageous things he was saying? Where were the knowing winks, and where were they absent? The guessing games that the album forced listeners to play were thrilling — and made all the more intense by his use of three personas (Marshall Mathers the person; Eminem the battle rapper; and Slim Shady the unhinged alter ego) that bled into each other.

And, of course, there was the rhyming. Eminem created a dizzying array of complicated compound rhymes and assonances, even finding time to rhyme "orange" — twice. (If you’re playing at home, he paired "foreign tools" with "orange juice" and "ignoring skill" with "orange bill.")

While the above are reason enough to revisit this classic album, pinpointing The Slim Shady LP 's influence is a more complicated task. Other records from that year — releases from Jay-Z , Nas , Lil Wayne , Ludacris , and even the Ruff Ryders compilation Ryde or Die Vol. 1 — have a more direct throughline to the state of mainstream rap music today. So much of SSLP , on the other hand, is tied into Eminem’s particular personality and position. This makes Slim Shady inimitable; there aren’t many mainstream rappers complaining about their precarious minimum wage job, as Em does on "If I Had." (By the time of his next LP, Em had gone triple-platinum and couldn’t complain about that again himself.)

But there are aspects of SSLP that went on to have a major impact. Here are a few of the most important ones.

It Made Space For Different Narratives In Hip-Hop

Before Kanye rapped about working at The Gap, Eminem rapped about working at a burger joint. The Slim Shady LP opened up space for different narratives in mainstream rap music.

The Slim Shady LP didn't feature typical rags-to-riches stories, tales of living the high life or stories from the street. Instead, there were bizarre trailer-park narratives (in fact, Eminem was living in a trailer months after the record was released), admissions of suicidal ideation ("That’s why I write songs where I die at the end," he explained on "Cum on Everybody"), memories of a neglectful mother, and even a disturbing story-song about dumping the corpse of his baby’s mother, rapped to his actual child (who cameos on the song).

Marshall Mathers’ life experience was specific, of course, but every rapper has a story of their own. The fact that this one found such a wide audience demonstrated that audiences would accept tales with unique perspectives. Soon enough, popular rappers would be everything from middle-class college dropouts to theater kids and teen drama TV stars .

The Album Explored The Double-Edged Sword Of The White Rapper

Even as late in the game as 1999, being a white rapper was still a comparative novelty. There’s a reason that Em felt compelled to diss pretty much every white rapper he could think of on "Just Don’t Give a F—," and threatened to rip out Vanilla Ice ’s dreadlocks on "Role Model": he didn’t want to be thought of like those guys.

" People don't have a problem with white rappers now because Eminem ended up being the greatest artist, " Kanye West said in 2015. You can take the "greatest artist" designation however you like, but it’s very true that Eminem’s success meant a categorical change in the status of white rappers in the mainstream.

This turned out to be a mixed blessing. While the genre has not, as some feared, turned into a mostly-white phenomenon, America’s racial disparities are often played out in the way white rappers are treated. Sales aside, they have more room to maneuver artistically — playing with different genres while insulting rap a la Post Malone ,  or even changing styles completely like Machine Gun Kelly — to commercial approbation. Black artists who attempt similar moves are frequently met with skepticism or disinterest (see André 3000 ’s New Blue Sun rollout, which was largely spent explaining why the album features no rapping ).

Sales are worth speaking about, too. As Eminem has repeatedly said in song, no small amount of his popularity comes from his race — from the fact that white audiences could finally buy music from a rapper who looked like them. This was, as he has also bemusedly noted , the exact opposite of how his whiteness worked for him before his fame, when it was a barrier to being taken seriously as a rapper.

For better, worse, or somewhere in between, the sheer volume of white rappers who are currently in the mainstream is largely traceable to the world-beating success of The Slim Shady LP.

It Was Headed Towards An Odd Future

SSLP laid groundwork for the next generation of unconventional rappers, including Tyler, the Creator .

Tyler is a huge Eminem fan. He’s said that listening to Em’s SSLP follow-up The Marshall Mathers LP was " how I learned to rap ." And he’s noted that Em’s Relapse was " one of the greatest albums to me ."

"I just wanted to rap like Eminem on my first two albums," he once told GQ . More than flow, the idea of shocking people, being alternately angry and vulnerable, and playing with audience reaction is reflected heavily on Tyler’s first two albums, Goblin and Wolf . That is the template The Slim Shady LP set up. While Tyler may have graduated out of that world and moved on to more mature things, it was following Em’s template that first gained him wide notice.

Eminem Brought Heat To Cold Detroit

The only guest artist to spit a verse on The Slim Shady LP is Royce da 5’9". This set the template for the next few years of Eminem’s career: Detroit, and especially his pre-fame crew from that city, would be his focus. There was his duo with Royce, Bad Meets Evil, whose pre- SSLP single of "Nuttin’ to Do"/"Scary Movies" would get renewed attention once those same two rappers had a duet, smartly titled "Bad Meets Evil," appear on a triple-platinum album. And of course there was the group D12, five Detroit rappers including his best friend Proof, with whom Eminem would release a whole album at the height of his fame.

This was not the only mainstream rap attention Detroit received in the late 1990s. For one thing, legendary producer James "J Dilla" Yancey, was a native of the city. But Eminem’s explosion helped make way for rappers in the city, even ones he didn’t know personally, to get attention.

The after-effects of the Eminem tsunami can still be seen. Just look at the rise of so-called " scam rap " over the past few years. Or the success of artists like Babyface Ray, Kash Doll, 42 Dugg, and Veeze. They may owe little to Em artistically, but they admit that he’s done great things for the city — even if they may wish he was a little less reclusive these days .

10 Halloween Songs That Have Won GRAMMYs: "Thriller," "Ghostbusters" & More

With Halloween celebrations in full swing this Oct. 31, revisit 10 eerie or ghoulishly titled songs that have all been awarded music's top honor, from the 'Exorcist' theme to Eminem and Rihanna's "The Monster."

If the holiday of trick or treating, pumpkin carving, and decorating your front porch with skeletons is your favorite of the year, then you'll no doubt already have a playlist stacked with creepy and kooky, mysterious and spooky bangers ready to fire up on Oct. 31. But if you want to add a bit of prestige to your supernatural soundtrack, there's another list of Halloween-friendly songs to check out — one that highlights another celebrated annual occasion.

While the GRAMMYs might not yet have awarded Rob Zombie , Jukebox the Ghost, or And You Will Know Us by the Trail of the Dead, it has embraced the odd musical spooktacular in several forms. In 1988, for example, it gave Halloween obsessive Frank Zappa Best Rock Instrumental Performance for Jazz from Hell . A year later, it handed Robert Cray Band Best Contemporary Blues Recording for Don't Be Afraid of the Dark . And it's also dished out goodies (of the statuette, rather than the sweet, variety) to the likes of Mavis Staples ' "See That My Grave Is Clean," Chick Corea 's "Three Ghouls," and Mastodon 's "A Sultan's Curse."

With Halloween 2023 fast approaching, here's a closer look at ten other tracks which left the music industry's biggest awards show completely bewitched.

Stevie Wonder — "Superstition" (1974)

It seems unlikely that Stevie Wonder walked under a ladder, crossed a black cat, or 'broke the lookin' glass' while recording "Superstition" — the squelchy Moog-funk classic kickstarted his remarkable run of 25 GRAMMY Awards when it won both Best Rhythm and Blues Song and Best R&B Vocal Performance Male in 1974. Taken from what many consider to be his magnum opus, Talking Book , "Superstition" also gave Wonder his first No. 1 hit on the Hot 100 in over a decade. And the soul legend further leaned into its supernatural theme in 2013 when he appeared as a witch doctor in a Bud Light Super Bowl commercial soundtracked by the Tamla favorite.

Mike Oldfield — "Tubular Bells" (1975)

Incredibly, considering how perfectly it complements all-time classic horror The Exorcist , Mike Oldfield 's prog-rock epic Tubular Bells was recorded long before director William Friedkin came calling. Mike Oldfield, then aged only 19, used a variety of obscure instruments across its two mammoth pieces. Yet, it's the brilliantly creepy Steinway piano riffs which open Side One that are still most likely to bring anyone who experienced the movie's hysteria in a cold sweat. Oldfield was rewarded for helping to scar a generation of cinemagoers for life when a condensed version of his eerie masterpiece picked up the Best Instrumental Composition GRAMMY.

The Charlie Daniels Band — "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" (1980)

The Charlie Daniels Band certainly proved their storytelling credentials in 1979 when they put their own Southern country-fied spin on the old "deal with the devil" fable. Backed by some fast and furious fiddles, "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" tells the tale of a young musician named Johnny who bumps into Beelzebub himself during a jam session in the Peach State. Experiencing a downturn in soul-stealing, the latter then bets he can win a fiddle-off, offering an instrument in gold form against Johnny's spiritual essence. Luckily, the less demonic party proves he's the "best that's ever been" in a compelling tale GRAMMY voters declared worthy of a prize, Best Country Vocal Performance By A Duo Or Group.

Michael Jackson — "Thriller" (1984)

The 1984 GRAMMYs undeniably belonged to Michael Jackson . The King of Pop picked up a whopping 11 nominations for his first blockbuster album, Thriller , and then converted seven of them into wins (he also took home Best Recording for Children for his narration on audiobook E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial ). Remarkably, the title track's iconic John Landis-directed video didn't feature at all: its making of, however, did win Best Music Film the following year. But the song itself did pip fellow superstars Prince , Billy Joel , and Lionel Richie to the Best Male Pop Vocal Performance crown. Jackson would also win a GRAMMY 12 years later for another Halloween-esque anthem, his Janet Jackson duet "Scream."

Duran Duran — "Hungry Like the Wolf" (1984)

Produced by Colin Thurston, the man behind another early '80s Halloween-friendly classic, (Bow Wow Wow's "I Want Candy"), "Hungry Like the Wolf" cemented Duran Duran 's status as MTV icons. Alongside their much raunchier earlier clip for "Girls on Film," its jungle-themed promo was also responsible for giving the Second British Invasion pin-ups the inaugural GRAMMY Award for Best Music Video, Short Form; it featured on the Duran Duran compilation that was crowned Best Video Album, too. Frontman Simon Le Bon had been inspired to write their U.S. breakthrough hit by Little Red Riding Hood , giving the new wave classic its sinister, and appropriately predatory, edge.

Ray Parker Jr. — "Ghostbusters" (1985)

Ray Parker Jr. not only topped the Hot 100 for four weeks with his ode to New York's finest parapsychologists, he also picked up a GRAMMY. Just don't expect to hear "who you gonna call?" in the winning version: For it was in the Best Pop Instrumental Performance where "Ghostbusters" reigned supreme. The fact that Parker Jr. wrote, performed, and produced the entire thing meant he still took home the trophy. However, Huey Lewis no doubt felt he should have been the one making the acceptance speech. The blue-eyed soulman settled out of court after claiming the spooky movie theme had borrowed its bassline from "I Want a New Drug," a track Ghostbusters ' director Ivan Reitman admitted had been played in film footage intended to inspire Parker Jr.

Ralph Stanley — "O Death" (2002)

Traditional Appalachian folk song "O Death" had previously been recorded by the likes of gospel vocalist Bessie Jones, folklorist Mike Seeger , and Californian rockers Camper Van Beethoven, just to name a few. Yet it was Ralph Stanley 's 2002 version where GRAMMY voters first acknowledged its eerie a cappella charms. Invited to record the morbid number for the Coen brothers' period satire O Brother, Where Art Thou , the bluegrass veteran won Best Male Country Vocal Performance at the 2002 ceremony, also picking up a second GRAMMY alongside the likes of Alison Krauss , Gillian Welch , and Emmylou Harris when the soundtrack was crowned Album Of The Year.

Skrillex — "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites" (2012)

David Bowie fans may well feel aggrieved that his post-punk classic "Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)" was entirely ignored by GRAMMY voters, while the bro-step banger it inspired was showered with awards. The title track from EP Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites added Best Dance Recording to Skrillex 's 2012 haul: the asymmetrically haired producer also walked away with Best Dance/Electronica Album and Best Remixed Recording: Non-Classical for his work on Benny Benassi 's "Cinema." Packed with speaker-blasting beats, distorted basslines, and aggressive synths, Skrillex's wall of noise is enough to scare anyone off their pumpkin pie.

Eminem and Rihanna — "The Monster" (2015)

Who says lightning can't strike twice? Just four years after picking up five GRAMMY nominations for their transatlantic chart-topper "Love the Way You Lie," unlikely dream team Eminem and Rihanna once again joined forces for another hip-pop masterclass. Unlike their previous collab, however, "The Monster" didn't go home empty-handed, winning Best Rap/Sung Collaboration at the 2015 ceremony. The boogeyman hiding under the bed here, of course, isn't a Frankenstein-esque creation, but the mix of paranoia, self-doubt, and OCD that leads the Real Slim Shady into thinking he needs a straitjacket.

Jason Isbell — "If We Were Vampires" (2018)

While the Twilight franchise may have failed to add a GRAMMY to its trophy cabinet, it did pick up several nominations. But four years after the Team Edward vs Team Jacob saga wrapped up, folk hero Jason Isbell proved mythical bloodsuckers weren't a barrier to awards success. Emerging victorious in only the fifth ever Best Americana Roots Song category, "If We Were Vampires" is a little less emo than the various Twilight soundtracks. Still, as a love song dedicated to wife Amanda Shires , and the quiet acceptance that the Grim Reaper will inevitably end their story, it's certainly no less emotional.

Eminem’s ‘Revival’: A Track-by-Track Guide

eminem revival track by track

Eminem , the best-selling rapper of all time, returned at midnight with Revival , his first album in four years. The new LP sprawls across 19 tracks, touching on rock, gospel, pop and, of course, hard-bitten hip-hop . Eminem veers from sassy to self-deprecating, dependent to dismissive, murderous to politically conscious, uncontrollably lusty to borderline repentant, sometimes all within the same song. He raps over skeletal, golden-age beats courtesy of Rick Rubin and stirring piano ballads from longtime collaborator Alex da Kid; he teams up with locally known artists like Phresher as well as global stars like Beyoncé , Pink and Alicia Keys . Across it all, Eminem remains intent on convincing listeners that he’s still at the top of his game: “Will I ever fall off/That day’ll never come.” Here’s a guide to understanding the album’s producers, songwriters, guests and key themes.

1. “Walk On Water” feat. Beyoncé Back in 2000, Eminem opened The Marshall Mathers LP with a sarcastic public service announcement: “Slim Shady does not give a fuck what you think!” It got nastier (and funnier) from there. But that was the old Marshall, and it turns out the new Marshall really does give a fuck what you think. Revival starts in a way that would have been unimaginable in the old days, with solemn piano chords, an honest-to-god gospel chorus from Beyoncé, and Eminem earnestly asking, “Why are expectations so high? Is it the bar I set?”

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

There’s no punchline. This is a serious, vulnerable track about the doubts that nag at a rap god late at night. He’s heard your criticisms of his latter-day work, and they hit home. In the second verse, he makes the stakes he’s chosen for Revival explicit, referencing the critical and commercial high-water mark of the original MMLP (“It’s the curse of the standard/That the first of the Mathers discs set”) and describing his writing process in relatable terms: “It always feels like I’m hitting the mark /Til I go sit in the car, listen and pick it apart/Like, this shit is garbage!”

Beyoncé comes through with humility and grace, and storied producer Rick Rubin (along with co-producer Skylar Grey) provides a sound that’s closer to the albums he made with Johnny Cash than the tougher-than-leather Run-DMC/Beasties beat he served up for “Berzerk” on Em’s last album. Mathers plays along, bringing a thoughtful tone and flow to match.

Then he snaps out of it in the track’s final seconds: “Me and you are not alike/Bitch, I wrote ‘Stan’!”

2. “Believe” Trappish snares and a minimal piano line give Revival ‘s second track a more contemporary feel – this is the sound of a rapper in his mid-40s doing his best to keep up with the kids. He’s pretty comfortable in this new setting, even sneaking a not-groanworthy use of the word “lit” into his first verse. A bit later, he gets off some great internal-rhyme runs in a thuggish-ruggish Midwestern cadence: “But I still remember the days of/Minimum wage for/General labor/Welfare recipient as a minor/Look how government assistance has made you!” That verse builds up to one of his more memorable recent solo choruses, with shades of “The Way I Am” and “Cleaning Out My Closet.” The lingering questions that he emphasized on “Walk on Water” are still in the picture here (“Man, in my younger days, that dream was so much fun to chase….But how do you keep up the pace and the hunger pangs once you’ve won the race?”). But he’s off and running now.

3. “Chloraseptic” feat. Phresher Fans flipped out when they saw that the only guest MC featured on Revival ‘s tracklist was Brooklyn’s own Phresher, best known for his street hit “Wait a Minute,” which blew up about a year ago and subsequently got remixed by everyone from Remy Ma to Riff Raff to 50 Cent to Royce da 5’9″. The latter connection likely explains how Eminem ended up calling in a hook from the NYC up-and-comer. “The record is about just spitting, man…Just cutthroat, at your throat music,” Phresher told Complex , adding, “It’s raw as fuck.”

True enough, Eminem gives a revved-up performance, dubbing himself the “Simon Cowell of rhyming foul,” memorably declaring “I’m Schoolly D, you’re Spoonie Gee” and providing a detailed description of how he plans to murder you using the wire from a notebook full of your weak-ass rhymes. The rumbling beat from his old friend Denaun Porter (a.k.a. Kon Artis from D-12) brings out his energetic, mischievous side.

4. “Untouchable” If any alt-right Eminem fans out there were hoping to forget about his Trump dis at the BET Hip Hop Awards , here he comes with even more vitriol. This six-minute song is Em’s most ambitious political statement ever, expanding and deepening the critique of American racism that he started outlining 15 years ago on “White America.” He spends the first half of “Untouchable” rapping from the perspective of a racist white cop, laying out exactly how he profiles and terrorizes black communities. The guitar-sampling beat from longtime cohorts Mr. Porter, Emile and Mark Batson makes this part of the song feel something like verse two of Jay-Z’s “99 Problems” with the viewpoint shifted to the state trooper’s side.

Then the beat switches to a moody piano loop, and Eminem raps from the perspective of a black American man in 2017. He gets fired up denouncing police brutality, segregation, hiring discrimination, flag-waving hypocrisy and other forms of systemic racism: “Fuck your Republican views/Pull ourselves up by the bootstraps, where the fuck are the boots?” It’s a lot to take in, and early reactions to “Untouchable” from within the rap world have been divided.

5. “River” feat. Ed Sheeran According to Ed Sheeran, much of “River” was recorded in March 2016 while he vacationed at actor Russell Crowe’s farm in Australia. “I used the studio at Russell’s house,” Sheeran told Billboard . “Played the drums on it, and then played the guitar, and then recorded the thing and wrote the chorus and did the piano on it, and then sent it off and then didn’t hear anything back.” Produced by Emile Haynie, the final version of “River” opens with Sheeran’s lament about being “a liar and a cheat,” then flows into Eminem’s lyrics about one-night stands, and the guilt and recriminations that follow. “Now that I got you I don’t want you/Took advantage and my thirst to pursue/Why do I do this dirt that I do?” he asks.

6. “Remind Me” (Intro) 7. “Remind Me” The cheeky hard rock of “Remind Me” is reminiscent of his 2013 single “Berzerk”: Both rely heavily on a sample of Joan Jett & the Blackhearts’ “I Love Rock & Roll.” And just like that Billboard top 3 hit, he uses “Remind Me” to unleash his horndog id, crowing about a big-booty woman with silicone breasts as big as the late Anna Nicole Smith’s. “Excuse me ma, I’m just too raw,” he raps. Still, he avoids referring to his conquest in derogatory terms, and the track seems more fun-loving than an expression of Slim Shady’s misogynist impulses. In a conversation with Elton John for Interview magazine , he talked about his relationship with the track’s producer, Rick Rubin. “[Rubin and I] were talking about a song or something, and he said, ‘I don’t really consider myself smart enough to know what everybody’s going to think, so I just do what feels right for me,'” Eminem remembered.

8. Revival (Interlude) 9. “Like Home” feat. Alicia Keys With a soaring chorus from Alicia Keys and production from Alex da Kid, “Like Home” continues the anti-Trump war that Eminem kicked off on last year’s single “Campaign Speech,” and reignited during the BET Hip-Hop Awards. “This chump barely even sleeps/All he does is watch Fox News like a parrot and repeats/While he looks like a canary with a beak/Why you think he banned transgenders from the military with a tweet?” he raps. (Critics of Eminem’s past lyrics about LGBTQ people may be surprised at his implicit support for transgender soldiers.)

Eminem also takes some blame for Trump’s past appearance in “Shady Convention,” a mock political video ad that promoted his then-new Shade45 satellite channel. “Take it back to the Shady national convention/Wish I had spit on it before I went to shake his hand at the event/Or maybe had the wherewithal/To know that he was going to try to tear apart/Our sacred land we cherish and stand for.” When he spoke to Elton John for Interview , he elaborated on his antipathy towards Trump. “As long as he’s got his base, he does not give a fuck about anybody else in America. But guess what? There’s more of us than there are of them. I still feel like America is the greatest country to live in. This is my opinion. But we have issues that we need to work on and we need to do better.”

10. “Bad Husband” feat. X Ambassadors Eminem has often picked at the volatility of male-female relationships in uncomfortably scabrous terms, most memorably on his 2010 hit “Love the Way You Lie.” But the Alex da Kid-produced “Bad Husband” has a disturbing ring of truth, if only because it mentions Hailie Jade Mathers, Eminem’s daughter with his ex-wife Kim Scott. “We carry on with our public spats,” he raps, perhaps referencing to the avalanche of tabloid press that chronicled Eminem and Scott’s tumultuous relationship in the late Nineties and early Aughts. “You hit me once, and that I would use/To continue the pattern of abuse/Why did I punch back?/Girl, your dad is a scumbag,” he raps as he alternates between addressing Hailie and Kim. Then he continues a pattern of repentance for using his family as artistic fodder that started with 2013’s “Headlights,” his memorable apology to his mother. “But I’m sorry Kim/More than you can ever comprehend/Leaving you was fucking harder than/Sawing off a fucking body limb.” A chorus and backing arrangement from X Ambassadors, the “Renegades” rock band that first worked with Em on “Wicked Ways,” conjures a melancholy sound of redemption.

11. “Tragic Endings” feat. Skylar Grey Eminem remains in his comfort zone – exploring a vicious codependent romance – on the arena-rap ballad “Tragic Endings.” “There’s just something ’bout her/ That makes me not able to function without her,” Eminem admits. But don’t think this is happily-ever-after: “The idea of seeing me happy destroys her in itself,” he raps. “To see me falling to pieces brings her joy.”

The claustrophobic hook of “Tragic Endings” is provided by Grey, a frequent Eminem collaborator. She helped write the rapper’s Number One smash “Love the Way You Lie” along with “Tragic Endings” producer Alex da Kid; she also penned Revival blockbuster Beyoncé collaboration “Walk on Water.” She works in lockstep with Eminem on “Tragic Endings” to drive home the suffocating nature of this relationship. “I’m dying to breathe and all you do is strangle me,” she sings. “What a relief.”

12. “Framed” For “Framed,” Eminem reaches back to early tracks like “’97 Bonnie & Clyde” in both sound – relying on the simplest of beats, just two guitar licks and an unchanging drum loop – and violent content: The rapper offers advice here on how to get away with homicide. “When murdering females better pay attention to these details or you could be derailed,” he warns. “Better wear at least three layers of clothing or be in jail.”

Back in “’97 Bonnie & Clyde,” Eminem was driving through the night with his longtime antagonist – and ex-wife – Kim dead in the back, but this time he envisions tangling with Eighties supermodel Christie Brinkley and the President’s daughter: “Dog, how the fuck is Ivanka Trump in the trunk of my car?” “Framed” wraps up with a half-hearted declaration of innocence. “There’s a missing person, so what? He’s got nothing to do with me/ I’m almost certain I was framed.”

13. “Nowhere Fast” feat. Kehlani Eminem faces off with a frantic string section, agitated hi-hats and the apocalypse on “Nowhere Fast,” defying terrorist attacks at one moment and his rap competition the next: “For MCs it’s a funeral when I’m devising this rhyme/ Cause I’m awake and you’re mourning, that’s why I rise and I shine.” Eminem may be 45 years old, but he has little interest in reflecting on his own mortality. “To the pine box: Bitch, fuck you,” he raps. “I’m better than I ever was.”

Kehlani joins Eminem to provide the atmospheric melodic accompaniment that he appears to favor everywhere on Revival . She sings sentimental lines about living fast and dying young: “Never looking back and we’re never getting old/ ‘Cause the skies are black but our hearts made of gold.” “Honored to be on this album, and in such amazing company,” she wrote on Instagram when Eminem shared the Revival track list earlier this month. “I can’t wait for the world to hear this.”

14. “Heat” After slamming President Trump throughout Revival , Eminem finds surprising common ground with him in “Heat,” one of the album’s lustiest songs. “Grab you by the [meow sound effect], hope it’s not a problem, in fact,” he raps. “About the only fact I agree on with Donald is that.” Eminem is single-mindedly priapic here, so even when he takes a moment to shout out this track’s producer, Rick Rubin, he twists the tribute into a pick-up line: “Come on, little mama, you’re hot enough to melt Rick’s beat.”

Rubin provides the sort of skeletal rap-rock accompaniment he served Eminem four years ago on The Marshall Mathers LP 2 track “Berserk” – distorted guitar and scratching vinyl sputter high in the mix. The primary riff is pulled from the Boogie Nights soundtrack’s “Intro (Feel the Heat),” a song performed in the film by John C. Reilly and Mark Wahlberg. “Heat” also ends with a brief snippet of Boogie Nights dialog from Wahlberg’s character that fits easily next to Eminem’s verses: “It’s my big dick, so everybody get ready right fucking now.”

15. “Offended” “Offended” features Revival ‘s most technically impressive passage, a blistering display of speed near the end of the song– countless syllables crammed into 12 or 13 seconds – that aims for the record books. The rest of the track rises from the same fertile ground as “Just Don’t Give a Fuck” and “Bad Influence,” old songs in which Eminem turns listeners’ hatred of him into a badge of honor – or maybe a suit of armor.

As always, antipathy spurs him to cross even more lines and break even more taboos; here he describes himself with allusions to men accused of sexual assault (Bill Cosby, R. Kelly) and child murder (Justin Ross Harris). And yet again, Eminem guns for Trump, still annoyed that the President did not reply to his BET freestyle. He also goes after Ivanka and Melania. “Shit’s on, bruh,” Eminem declares. “… Ivanka, stiff arm her/While I’m hittin’ on Melania/And this song’s for all ya.”

The MC alternates between hard, low rapping and nursery-rhyme sing-song on “Offended,” borrowing his hook from a bleak source – “The Knife Game Song.” The taut, jumpy, brassy “Offended” instrumental was crafted by Illa da Producer, who also helmed Lil Pump’s “Pinky Ring” and French Montana’s “Have Mercy.” Eminem takes a moment to compliment the beat-maker’s work, noting that, “These drums and hard snares bring out the worst in me.” “I’m so narcissistic, when I fart, I sniff it,” he adds a few lines later. “Do a fake dab to smell my armpits with it.”

16. “Need Me” feat. Pink “Need Me” is Eminem’s second collaboration with Pink. But in contrast to the playful “Revenge,” off of her October album Beautiful Trauma , “Need Me” is a bombastic power ballad dominated by Alex da Kid’s cavernous percussion. Pink sings two verses and choruses before Eminem comes in for the song’s one lengthy, intense rap verse. But something happens in the first half of “Need Me” that’s rarely been heard in Eminem’s many collaborations with female singers: he harmonizes with Pink, his voice gradually appearing during her second verse. Darting in and out of the track’s lurching waltz rhythm, Marshall vents about a dysfunctional relationship: “Starting to think we were made for each other/ But one of us in this relationship is raising the other/ You remind me of my mother.”

17. “In Your Head” “In Your Head” opens with Dolores O’Riordan’s voice beamed in from 1994 as a sample of the Cranberries hit “Zombie,” and runs underneath the entirety of the track. The song is produced by Scram Jones, a New York-based MC/producer who’s been chopping samples for Jadakiss, Ghostface Killah, and others since the early 2000s, but has never worked with Eminem before.

George Clooney Phones White House After Biden Rebukes Wife’s Work on Israel Warrants

Alex jones will sell off infowars to help pay $1.5 billion he owes to sandy hook families, 'house of the dragon' season 2 repeats same thrills — and mistakes — as season 1, phish fan banned from sphere for taking bong rip: ‘no regrets’.

Em spends most of “In Your Head” castigating himself over career missteps: “Fuck it, I’ve done enough in this rap shit, Recovery brought me nothing but back to where I was/ And perhaps this could’ve been my victory lap if I wasn’t on the verge of Relapse .”

18. “Castle” feat. Skylar Grey “I built this castle, now we are trapped on the throne,” Skylar Grey sings at the opening of “Castle.” Each verse of the song is a letter, complete with pencil and paper sound effects echoing “Stan.” But this time, the letters are from Marshall Mathers to his daughter Hailie; the first letter is a few weeks before her 1995 birth, the second is a year later, and the third is on her 12th birthday. The third verse ends with Eminem at a low point in 2007, overdosing on methadone and nearly dying. “Your dad’s at the end of his rope/I’m sliding down a slippery slope/Anyway, sweetie, I better go, I’m getting sleepy…Love, Dad, shit, I don’t know.”

19. “Arose” “Arose” opens with a loop of “The Rose,” the title song from Bette Midler’s 1979 album and film of the same name. Picking up where the narrative of “Castle,” ended, Eminem is recounting his 2007 overdose, speaking to his family and to his longtime D12 groupmate Proof, whose 2006 death “tore me in two.” Four minutes into “Arose,” Eminem declares “To rewrite a mistake, I’m rewinding the tape” and the song abruptly stops, and the third verse of “Castle” begins again. But this time it ends differently, “I’m pledging to throw this methadone in the toilet.” The album concludes with a new day dawning, and the sound of a toilet flushing.

What can be said about Eminem that hasn’t already been said? The most successful rapper of all time has sold nearly a quarter of a billion albums and changed the world of music and pop culture forever.

From his less-than-humble beginnings to the pinnacle of notoriety and superstardom, Marshall Mathers has truly seen it all.

Born in 1972 to his mother Debbie and father Bruce, Mathers’ family broke apart soon after forming. His father abandoned his wife and infant son and moved to California. Mathers and his mother moved between Detroit and Missouri, typically changing homes every year or so and living with family members. When he was a teenager, Mathers wrote letters to his father that all came back with “return to sender” marked on them.

For most of Mathers’ youth, he and his mother lived in a poor neighborhood in Detroit, and he was often targeted for bullying. But he had a creative outlet: He loved storytelling. He first dreamt of becoming a comic book artist, but then he discovered rap. The first rap song he ever heard was “Reckless” featuring Ice-T, given to him by his mother’s half-brother Ronnie. Ronnie played a positive role in Mathers’ childhood, mentoring him and giving him emotional support.

Marshall repeated ninth grade three times before dropping out of Lincoln High School at age 17. He had already begun rapping by this time and frequently snuck into the neighboring high school with his friend to compete in freestyle rap battles during lunch. Weekends saw them performing at open mics on West 7 Mile Road, the epicenter of Detroit’s underground rap scene. He spent much of his free time working on rhymes for different words in the English language.

Meanwhile, Mathers fought constantly with his mother, who was described as having a “very suspicious, almost paranoid personality” by a social worker. In 1987, Debbie invited runaway Kim Scott into their home. Marshall and Kim began a tumultuous relationship several years later. By 1988, he had adopted the stage name MC Double M and was recording demo tapes and appearing in music videos. Mathers’ uncle Ronnie committed suicide in 1991, a traumatic experience that caused Mathers to stop speaking for several days.

He formed The Dirty Dozen, also known as D12, in 1996 — the same year he released his debut album, Infinite, which was a commercial failure. DJs who rejected his tracks asked him why he didn’t just go into rock and roll, which fueled him to craft darker, angrier tracks. He and Kim lived in a dangerous neighborhood and were robbed multiple times, and Marshall was working for minimum wage washing dishes. Before Christmas of that year, he had been fired and attempted suicide.

In 1997, Mathers developed an alter ego called Slim Shady and recorded the Slim Shady EP, released by Web Entertainment. The EP attracted some attention, even getting mentioned by hip-hop magazine The Source in 1998.

After placing second in a nationwide rap battle in Los Angeles, Mathers’ EP got noticed by Dr. Dre. The two began working on The Slim Shady LP, which was released in February 1999. It went triple platinum by the end of the year. The album’s violent lyrics were an outlet for Eminem’s anger and frustration, and they struck a strange chord with the public.

The next decade was all his. His second full-length album, The Marshall Mathers LP, came out in May 2000 and sold nearly 2 million copies before the end of its first week. Mathers toured that year with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and Ice Cube. In 2001, he was the only guest on Jay-Z’s album, The Blueprint.

In May 2002, Eminem released The Eminem Show, the best-selling album of the year with 27 million copies sold worldwide. Encore followed in 2004, showcasing more of his political commentary. His subsequent albums include Relapse, Recovery, The Marshall Mathers LP 2, and, of course, the soundtrack to the semi-autobiographical blockbuster film 8 Mile.

Eminem’s career was relatively quiet in the late 2010s, until the earth-shaking moment he criticized then-President Trump in the 2017 freestyle “The Storm.” This represented a comeback moment for Eminem — his support for Black Americans resonated at a time when social unrest and inequality were becoming highly talked about.

You can catch Eminem’s concerts today—see what this world-changing artist is up to by seeing him live, in-person, at a stage near you.

Live reviews

“EMINEM.” Seeing his name lit across the stage was mind blowing. As if natural instinct, everyone started chanting, ‘EM-IN-EM, EM-IN-EM’, until the legend himself took the stage, wearing a get up that only the King of Rap could pull off.

Without a breathe of a moment, he jumps directly in to rapping, setting the crowd on fire as most of us have been waiting in the stadium for hours, and some of us have been waiting for years. As far back as we can remember, Eminem was there, withstanding the wrath of time and still being able to top the charts many, many years later.

The audience was as real as he is, old, young (too young), male, female and people of all colours were there. I could see it in their eyes, as they threw their hands to the beat and mouthed every word along with him, that at this moment, this is all they have ever wanted. When songs like “Lose Yourself”, “Stan”, “Not Afraid” and a few others were sung, tears flowed freely, because like every other person, those songs were a part of various struggles and difficulties you or someone you are close to have faced. That’s not to say the concert is a downer, no, not at all. Once you’ve wiped your tears away, “Without Me”, “The Real Slim Shady”, “Rap God” and more is performed, to get your body moving, dancing, jumping, flashing, whatever you are in to. Aside from the upbeat tracks, his stage presence is something else, he manages to be filthy and charming all at the same time.

And by the end of the show, you’re speechless. Firstly, because you’re in shock due to the fact that you have never experienced a level of such greatness, and secondly, because your voice is gone as rapping alongside the one and only Eminem, is not as easy as he makes it look.

Eminem in concert in LA was enough to make me extraordinarily happy, but for him to perform some hits from the Recovery album made the entire night absolutely worth it!! It was nostalgic for him to perform his old hits, taking me back to elementary and junior high school days, but Recovery was the album that solidified my love and appreciation for his artistry, talent and heart!

Em's portion of the show was absolutely fantastic, he is truly a lyrical genius and he never fails to deliever with an energy and intensity that is infectious! I would have been more than happy (and actually would have preferred) if the show was just his performance, but I can fully understand why he would need someone to fill some time to give him a break between his sets. When he performs it feels like he is literally pouring his heart and soul out on the stage and that has to be beyond exhausting for him, hence the need for Rihanna. Her part was ok. The venue (the Rose Bowl) was an experience in itself. Parking wasn't as bad as I was anticipating, but it was very expensive. The arena was packed solid, but I never felt too overwhelmed by people even though I was on the floor. It was just great to be surrounded by people who were enjoying the concert. If you ever have a chance to see Em in concert, I would say, GO!

I have been a huge Eminem fan since he came out with Cleaning Out My Closet, I was very very young at the time so I've been a fan since I was a little kid. I was very much looking forward to my first Eminem concert, and on 8/16 at MetLife Stadium, my dream finally came true. The website said they would start at 7:30, but they didn't start until like 8:40, but the whole concert made up for it. Eminem was amazing, I honestly have no words to describe the experience except that it was very unreal and I had to pinch myself a few times just to make sure this was really happening to me. He played a lot of his songs off his first two albums and then some songs off of Recovery & MMLP2. For anyone who had seats or had Floor B GA, you really missed out on an amazing view & concert. The view from the 200s & 300s probably sucked, they could only probably see Eminem & Rihanna from the jumbo screens. Rihanna was great too, she was very sweet & funny live, as well as sexy & seductive. Eminem was funny and his stage presence was wonderful. This was an experience I'd LOVE to have again, an experience many should get to enjoy and from the amazing view in GA. I do hope he goes on tour again in the next year or so.

Fucking amazing!! Man’s music has saved my life so many times! A real artist and an incredible lyricist... unbaleaveablw how much talent Marshal has. Tears dropped as he sung songs that touched my heart and took me back from the grave... I love him for all he has done for me an my recovery... if only I was able to thank him in person... In rehab they say to believe in power that’s greater than me, as my god. Eminem is that god to me. A powerful man that I know has saved so many lives just from his music. The show was the best show I’ve ever attended. Only issue was I wasn’t quick enough to get a ticket I the pit. I would have rocked up at 6am before the concert just to get into the front row and thank the ma. For everything he has done for my life..

But I don’t think I’ll ever get the chance to thanks him and praise Marshal. But I doubt I’ll

Ever get the chance to express the abundance of help, love and strength I receive when ever I lisfen laying down to his tracks!!! An I doubt he’ll ever truely know how many llivws he has saves and touched!!! 100/10 for the show!!! Bring him back pleaseeee!!!

Where do I start, right let’s try.... I’ve been lucky enough to see Eminem 3 Times now, first time was v festival where he was absolutely superb and stole the show. Second was at Wembley, where yet again he smashed it, and too bring out dre was unbelievable and the crowd went insane, personally thought, u are not topping that.... but now to twickenham, where I didn’t think he could possibly get any better or fulfill his thousands and thousands of fans, but how stupid was I haha, not only delivers the best show/concert I’ve ever been to and seen but upped the anti and performs the best I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen a few acts, not to finish there, but brings out not just 50 cent but ed sheeran also and the crowd just goes insane and lifted the roof off....

By far the best performer/performance I’ve been luckily enough to witness

I FINALLY got to see Eminem live after being a fan since day one. What can I say that will do the performance justice? He was AMAZING! Everything that I ever imagined in my mind an Eminem concert would be, well it was 10 times better than that. He was on point with his flow, the sound was awesome, the stage design was great too but honestly I didn't even pay that much attention to that because I was focusing on him the entire time. It was a long time coming for me to see him live and man did he exceed my expectations. Few shows have ever hit that top mark for me and wow he did it. There really are no words that I can say that will give him the credit he deserves for being an amazing artist and performer. All I can say is if you get a chance to watch him, DO IT! You will not be disappointed. I can't wait to be able to watch him again!

Marshal a.k..a Eminem, you are the best music star ever! I listen to your music everyday becuase I love how you put your anger and pain into the words of your songs, "I'm Sorry Mama, I never meant to hurt you, I never meant to make you cry" is one of the best emotional phrases you have used even though you think you have hurt them they will always love you and make sure you are safe. I will always buy your albums when they are released and even try and come to one of your concerts, hopefully meaning I get to meet you and ask for a picture with you and ask you nicely to sign my albums and posters I have. You are my favourite singer of all time. I am your biggest fan ever!

From Curtis

P.S. You are the best, hopefully I get to meet you and that would be the best day of my life I would never forget it and never forget you!

Eminem is epic. Eminem live is mind blowing! Live he performs a great variety of songs from all of his albums, mixing in some of his old stuff which brings feelings of nostalgia with his newer stuff which sounds great. He has got to be one of the best rappers of all time and the fact that he writes all his lyrics himself gives the songs depth and meaning. He's a lyrical genius! Watching him live is a roller coaster of emotions from jumping up and down and going wild to swaying your hands in the air with a sing-a-long. Even though Wembley held thousands he still performed like it was to each and every one of you, interacting with the crowd and showing off his great sense of humor. Eminem is amazing and I would highly recommend seeing him live, there's no feeling like it.

eminem-rex-1100.jpg

Eminem has announced two massive UK shows are part of his Revival world tour.

The rapper will bring his hit-packed show to Twickenham Stadium in London on July 14 and 15.

The tour is in support of his latest album, Revival, which debuted at Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart last December and includes the chart-topping single River. The record's UK combined sales and streams currently stand at 233,000.

The tour comes off the back of his triumphant set at Reading and Leeds Festivals last year, while in 2014, he became the first rapper to sell out Wembley Stadium.

Eminem is the most successful rapper on the UK charts, with nine Number 1 singles and eight chart-topping albums. Look back at his complete chart history here .

Tickets for the two London shows go on sale at 9am, on Friday, February 2.

Following the release of his global chart topping album Revival , fifteen-time GRAMMY award winner, MTV EMA Best Hip-Hop recipient and biggest selling rapper of all time, Eminem has today announced his Revival Tour will hit London’s Twickenham Stadium in summer.

These will be Eminem ’s first live shows in the UK since his incredible headline slot of the Reading and Leeds Festival last year. NME called his set “triumphant” while The Telegraph awarded him five stars in their review. In 2014, Eminem became the first rapper to sell out Wembley Stadium. The show sold out immediately leading to second date, which also sold out.

Eminem has been called one of the greatest MCs of any generation. His recently released album, Revival , hit #1 becoming his eighth consecutive #1 album in the UK – it equals a record set by Led Zeppelin and Abba. The single, ‘River’, became Eminem ’s ninth #1 last week.

Superstar rapper Eminem has announced he will be playing some massive UK live shows this summer. According to a post on Metropolis Music (a partner of promoter Live Nation), the rap legend will be playing at Twickenham Stadium in London on 14 July and 15 July. Tickets for the shows will go on sale on at 9am on 2 February.

The Twickenham dates are part of Eminem’s first world tour in four years and comes off the back of his worldwide smash-hit return with his recent album Revival , which has been taking fans by storm. Revival hit the Billboard top spot in the US, marking Eminem’s eighth No.1 album, and ‘River’ – featuring Ed Sheeran – became his ninth number one single last week.

In 2014, he became the first rapper to sell out Wembley stadium. Last year, he performed at the Reading & Leeds Festival weekend and wowed the crowds.

Eminem’s agent Steve Strange, told Music Week : “He’s a legend and one good thing about Eminem is that he’s so continuously relevant. From the start of the career right up to date, the guy is one of the hippest and coolest performers that there is in the business and I don’t think that can be denied.”

Eminem had taken a bit of a break from touring a few years ago but now appears to be getting back into the swing of things and he remains as popular as ever.

Strange said of Eminem’s hiatus from touring between 2005 and 2009: “We came back in [2010] to do three events: a show in Switzerland called Openair Frauenfeld, T in the Park in Scotland and Oxegen in Dublin. That was his re-entry back into the live arena and since that we’ve done sporadic touring, where we’ve taken in a mixture of festivals and headlines.

“Every single one of his headline shows have all sold out, by the way, with the exception of none. I’ve had a very consistent career of sell-outs for this guy.”

Eminem Heads Out on European Tour This Summer

Eminem  is heading back on the road. On Tuesday (Jan. 30), the rapper used his social media accounts to announce the coming of the European portion of his Revival Tour, which is set to begin in Oslo, Norway on June 30.

The tour is eight dates, and it will see Em hit everywhere from Norway to Germany to Italy  at the peak of summer. Given the name of the trek, it will obviously be a tour focused on his polarizing, recently released Revival album .

While the reception to Em's latest album might have been mixed , the rapper, who recently hit the studio with Mike Will Made-It , will more than likely face a crowd of incredibly enthusiastic fans nonetheless. After all, he is a rap god.

Before embarking on his tour of Europe, Em will be performing at the 2018 Coachella , a festival set to include The Weeknd, Migos, Beyonce and more. Clearly, Em's up for a huge 2018.

Tickets for the European portion of Eminem's Revival Tour go on sale Friday (Feb. 2) at 9 a.m. GMT. You can cop tickets at Ticketmaster.

Posts began circulating on social media last night claiming that Eminem is bringing his Revival Tour to Birmingham Resorts World Arena on Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27, 2024. Hopeful fans began listing themselves as 'going' with some 29,000 people listing themselves as 'interested' on the post.

Our What's On team, which brings you daily email updates including breaking news on the big gigs and tours coming to the city in our CityLife newsletter has looked into these posts and we can confirm that there's no Eminem shows scheduled to take place in Birmingham at the time of writing.

We have spoken with Resorts World which confirmed that there's no Eminem tour dates to share at the moment. The posts circulating on Facebook state that pre-sale tickets go on sale today so be careful when parting with your cash if you do see any claims of this as there's currently nothing official listed on trusted sites like The Ticket Factory.

Furthermore, if you look carefully at the posts that are circulating on social media, they show that tickets go on sale in 2018. Eminem released his album Revival in the year before.

The account that set up the events on Facebook has also created events for Chris Tucker in Las Vegas, Drake and J Cole and An Evening With Bryan Adams in Atlanta, Georgia.

Eminem's last shows in Britain were in Twickenham in 2018. He has not, as we understand it, performed in the UK since. The rapper is currently promoting a collaboration with video game Fortnite as well as a capsule clothing collection and has made no mention of a UK tour on his social media accounts.

Be wary when signing up to events and especially if asked to part with any money for tickets. Stay in touch with us and we'll bring you the latest if Eminem does announce a Birmingham date.

Truth about ‘Eminem UK 2024 tour’ posts circulating on the internet

Truth about ‘Eminem UK 2024 tour’ posts circulating on the internet

Eminem fans got very excited for his 'upcoming tour'..

Anish Vij

Rap god Eminem has been one of the most popular music artists in the world for the past 20 years.

The Detroit bar-spitter rose to fame after signing with Dr Dre in '98 and his second album Slim Shady LP, which came out a year later, even earned him a Grammy .

Since then, he has become one of the best-selling music artists of all time.

Whilst many rappers become 'irrelevant' in their later years, Eminem is 51 and is still strong and kicking.

His 2020 album Music to Be Murdered By was his 11th studio album and his 10th consecutive number-one album.

However, the last time he toured in the UK was in 2018.

So, you can understand why fans are quick to lose their s**t whenever 'tour dates' get announced.

Rap God Eminem has been one of the most popular music artists in the world for the past 20 years.

Rumours of a '2024 Revival Tour' in the UK began circulating on social media late last night as hopeful fans listed themselves as 'going'.

A Facebook event group claimed Shady was bringing his Revival Tour to Birmingham Resorts World Arena on Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27, 2024.

29,000 people said they were 'interested' and users were obviously filled with excitement.

After thousands fell for it, people soon realised that tickets for the event went on sale five years ago.

The event sparked a massive online interest.

Emily Bradley called out the event organiser on Facebook, writing: "I’m seeing a lot of my friends on facebook *interested* in the Eminem tour on 25th April 2024.

"However tickets went on sale 5 years ago apparently and Birmingham's arena have no clue he’s turning up.

"Sorry to spoil Christmas (ps I fell for it too, the w**kers)."

"The amount of people that have believed there is a Eminem tour next year (including myself) just shows how fake the internet is and that we literally shouldn’t trust a thing on social media anymore," another added.

"Seems everyone’s sharing or declaring an interest in an Eminem tour that he did 5 years ago," a third commented.

"Pretty sure he’s not touring. Could be some sort of scam. Careful."

Birmingham Mail got in touch with Resorts World, who confirmed that there's no Eminem tour dates to share at the moment.

This comes after a devastated 50 Cent fan shared the moment she was ‘convinced’ he would bring out Eminem at the rapper's recent concert in Manchester.

The Queens rapper - real name is Curtis Jackson - put on an epic show at the AO Arena on 10 November, as concert-goers were loving his old school bangers from the early and late 2000s.

Fifty teased fans with what they thought was a surprise cameo from Shady.

Kayla was one of the thousands who attended - and taking to TikTok - she captured the moment she, and many others, thought Eminem was about to jump on.

"Should of seen my face lol," she captioned the post, which saw fifty chant the words: "Now when I say slim, you say shady - slim [shady], slim [shady].

"When I say doctor you say Dre - doctor [Dre], doctor [Dre].

Thousands fuming as truth about Eminem’s ‘Birmingham gigs’ ruins Christmas

Thousands of people were duped by claims rapper Eminem was bringing a massive live gig to Birmingham in 2024.

Fans of the Not Afraid star, 51 , were overjoyed as an event was set up on Facebook declaring he was set to perform in the Resorts World Arena in Solihull.

It claimed the rapper was bringing his Revival Tour to the city on April 25, 2024, and so far almost 40,000 people have responded to the event.

This despite the fact his Revival album was released in 2017 – and that the hoax claims tickets to the ‘2024 concert’ will go on sale on December 21, 2018.

Eminem is not currently touring at all, with his last one coming in 2019 in the form of the Rapture Tour – though he has made some surprise appearances on stage with the likes of Ed Sheeran and 50 Cent .

After thousands were fooled by the event, hopeful concert-goers began realising they were tricked – and furiously kicked off on the event page.

Jade Turner said the post ‘really had me bloody going … [it] really spoilt my bloody Christmas!’

Natalie Rowley agreed she was ‘proper gutted when I found out it was fake,’ with Ruby Tuesday Castle adding: ‘Fuming who would make such a lie up.’

‘Cheers Christmas ruined now,’ Cali Macmillan grumbled, while plenty more hit out at the ‘fake’ post.

Others accused whoever was behind the post of being ‘scammers’ and urged people not to part with their money, in fear people try to buy tickets for a concert that didn’t exist.

It’s not the first time this year – or even this week – that Eminem has been the subject of a major hoax.

On December 10, the star’s Wikipedia page was edited to make it appear as though he had died that day at the age of 51.

The edit was screenshotted by fans and spread across X, formerly Twitter, and naturally it didn’t take long before the hashtag #RIPEminem began trending on the site.

Of course, the Mockingbird artist is not actually dead – Marshall Mathers had simply joined the ranks of Janet Street-Porter, Denise Welch and Lil Tay in the 2023 death hoax alumni.

Linda Robson was the latest Loose Women star to have been declared dead by a Twitter account notorious for killing off the panel, but had the last laugh with her response.

Taking to Instagram, the actress shared a video of herself lying on the sofa, arms crossed over her chest, before rising up and opening her eyes while the main theme from Psycho blared in the background.

She wrote in her caption: ‘Woke up to lots of messages and calls, apparently there has been a rumour I had passed away going around.

‘You won’t get rid of me that easy! 😉’
