Book Your School For a Tour At Sugar Bay in 2023

Sugar Bay is the number one holiday destination for children and teens in South Africa. Our school tours are tailor-made to balance educational study and fun activities, ensuring that learning is done in an interesting and memorable way. Send us your curriculum and our team of creative and academic managers will tailor-make a program just for your school.

“From the time we arrived until the time we left, I noticed that this place has such great customer service, we were well taken care of and the staff was really friendly and helpful. Our accommodation was brilliant and it's been good from when we got here. We would recommend Sugar bay to every school because it really helped with the kids bonding and getting to know each other”. – Crawford College, Sandton

We have luxurious accommodation for both teachers and students. We can cater for up to 200 learners. Teachers stay in their own luxurious 3-star teacher lodge with a mini-bar, DStv and heated pool. Teachers can chill out on their own private deck, take a stroll on the beach, cruise on the lagoon or join in on the fun camp activities while our staff takes care of everything. Students are treated not only to all the great activities we have to offer but to luxury en-suite stilted log cabins nestled in the treetops.

Our camp counselors are specifically trained and experienced in the growth and developmental needs of the different age groups, as well as Emergency First Aid & CPR. We also have our own qualified lifeguards who accompany the children to the beach, lagoon, and swimming pool. Their first priority is the care, supervision and happiness of every child; and they form an integral part of the Sugar Bay experience. They are also actively involved in teaching activities and ensuring that every child is helped and encouraged to reach their full potential, whatever their capability level. Our 1:5 staff to child ratio is the highest in the country, and 24-hour supervision ensures that the campers are kept extra safe while having the time of their lives.

Children are currently under huge physical, emotional, social and physiological stress. With isolation, overreliance on screens, lack of sports and play and prevailing fears, experts are reporting an increase in behavioural, academic and emotional problems including anxiety, low grades and depression. School tours are the ideal nurturing environment to help address these issues. Camp programs and activities are designed to support the emotional, physical and social development of children. Studies have found that a child’s psychological well-being and emotional balance will be greater after participation in a scho ol tour. Many people rate school t ours as being the highlight of their formative years. Education experts agree that school camps should be an integral part of every student’s learning experience. “The American International School of Johannesburg has been bringing students to Sugar Bay Camp in Zinkwazi Beach, KZN for our annual Classroom Without Walls (CWW) week for over a dozen years. I have been the organiser on the school’s end for the past 8 years. From the start Sugar Bay has always been the highlight of the grade eights’ year. A greatly anticipated event that marks the closing of their final middle school year. In a phrase, Sugar Bay Camp is a fantastic educational opportunity that I would unconditionally recommend for kids of all ages”. - American International School Johannesburg

Safety - our number 1 priority

Expert leaders, risk assessments, quality inclusions and your financial security all come standard when travelling with World Expeditions Schools.

Minimising risk

Our industry leading risk management procedures have become a skill that we continue to refine. Thanks to careful management and thorough consultation with local partners our track record is exemplary.

Service Learning specialists

School Service Learning Community Projects offer a unique way to experience genuine cultural interaction while also providing real tangible benefits to underprivileged communities. Every Service Learning project is guided by the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Trusted accommodations

We only utilise trusted accommodation on a twin-share basis (unless otherwise requested) which we know to be clean, reliable, in a safe location and are regularly inspected by local authorities. Wherever possible, adjoining rooms are provided to ensure that students are provided with adequate supervision.

When camping your group will be provided with all group camping equipment including tents, quality sleeping bags, sleeping mats, eating utensils, kit bags as well as three hearty meals per day prepared by our trained cooks in a hygienic and controlled environment.

Reliable, private internal transport

We only use trusted transport providers and always use private buses. Using private buses not only ensures we can control the safety of the service but it also provides a measure of flexibility in our trips with each group provided vehicles dedicated to their needs. It also means the group is not taking seats away from locals who are in more need of the local services.

Hygienically prepared meals

When trekking, our trained staff and team of cooks provide a hygienic camp as well as fresh, nutritious meals.

Experienced & highly trained local guides

We believe local guides provide the best experience. Their local knowledge is unparalleled in terms of interpreting the natural and cultural environments, outlining the history of a region, engaging local dialogue and also re-arranging services if required.

Many of our local guides have worked for our company for a decade or longer. They are first aid trained, experienced, passionate about their country and we have the utmost confidence in their ability to provide an experience for your school better than any western guide can.

Well thought out, tailored itineraries

If itinerary design was an art form our work would be hanging in galleries around the world. At the very least it is most certainly a science and we have years of destinational experience to ensure your itinerary is safe and achievable.

When it comes to travelling at altitude we always allow ample days to allow for proper acclimatisation as well as to allow for inclement weather.

Most of the country is considered to be semi-arid, however, there is considerable variation in topography and climate. South Africa is blessed with one of the most temperate climates on the continent, with extremes of heat and cold rare and temperate weather conditions year-round.

Most of South Africa lies at a fairly high elevation and, as such, experiences average temperatures that are cooler than countries at similar latitude (for example, Australia).

South Africa’s climate and weather patterns are greatly influenced by the oceans surrounding the country to the east, south and west, and cold polar wind fronts in the winter months, and by high-pressure systems from the Atlantic Ocean in the summer months.

Precipitation is highly variable, but rains and thunderstorms generally occur in the summer months (November to March) with the exception of the Western Cape, which receives its rainfalls in winter (June to September). The higher areas of the Cape and the Drakensberg mountains generally receive snowfalls in the winter months.

Across almost the entire country, summers are warm to hot and winters cool to cold. Diurnal temperature ranges are dramatic in the interior but much more stable in coastal areas.

Summer temperatures range from 15 to 35°C (59 to 95°F), with winter temperatures ranging from -2 to 25°C (28 to 77°F).

While the temperate climate permits a visit to South Africa in any month, the days can be wet and uncomfortably hot in summer (November to March) and the cooler, drier winter months (June to early September) are generally the best for hiking, outdoor adventuring and wildlife watching. Spring (mid-September to November) and autumn (April to May) are ideal times to visit.

Botanic gardens around the world have played a role in education for many decades, and the Durban Botanic Gardens is no different. The initial education focus may have had a more scientific emphasis but that is no longer the case. Climate change and protecting our environment for future generations has pushed environmental education to the fore.

The Durban Botanic Gardens offers an important space for learning to take place. In the early years it provides a place where exploration and discovery can take place, and in the later years a more scientific conservation model is used to inspire and engage learners.

The Durban Botanic Gardens Education team provide a number of programmes for different groups.

School Programmes

Education outreach.

The Durban Botanic Gardens Education Outreach Centre cultivates a sense of citizenship in citizens of the eThekweni Municipal area. The Durban Botanic Gardens Education section has a team of volunteers who facilitate educational tours around the Gardens, providing an overview of the Gardens, including scientific and cultural knowledge. The Durban Botanic Gardens Trust actively supports the volunteer components of the programme, aiming to promote a passion and love for nature rather than filling learner’s heads with numerous facts.

“In the end we will conserve only what we love; we will love only what we understand; and we will understand only what we have been taught” – Baba Dioum

Durban Botanic Gardens Education School Programmes

The curriculum aligned school programmes focus on biodiversity, ecology, climate change and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The Durban Botanic Gardens volunteers facilitate biodiversity walks around the Gardens and do interactive activities which target different grades and age groups.

The school programmes aim to promote biodiversity, conservation and citizenship as well as preserving nature. We do this by showing that we are inter-connected with nature and that we all have a role to play. We educate the school learners on environmental issues and promote taking care of nature.

Since July 2013 the school programme has to date reached out to more than 19 000 learners from all walks of life. The programme prides itself in promoting accessibility to all citizens of South Africa with a view to correcting the injustices of apartheid spatial planning.

School Biology Trip To South Africa

South Africa's wildlife and game parks are famous throughout the world and none so much as the Kruger which stretches over 20,000km and where you can see large populations of lion and elephant as well as the other 'Big Five' of leopard, buffalo and black rhinoceros.  There are many species of antelope including the familiar impala, and other predators including wild dog, hyena and jackal. Outside the Kruger our tour visits a wild life sanctuary and explores some of the beautiful scenery of the Blyde River Canyon. We then travel to the Durban region on the Indian Ocean coast where there are excellent opportunities to see Hippo and Crocodile at St. Lucia and to visit the wonderful uShaka marine world aquarium.

Suggested Itinerary

The itinerary featured here is intended to give you inspiration and an idea of what you could do on your tour. Your trip will be created individually by one of our travel advisors to match your requirements and budget.

Depart from Home

Flight to Johannesburg:  You depart today for your overnight flight to Johannesburg.

Arrival in Johannesburg. Gold Reef City and the Apartheid Museum.

Gold Reef City: You will be met by your guide and private coach on arrival and visit Gold Reef City, a living museum depicting the early mining days in Johannesburg. You descend underground in a mine hoist to explore the mine museum and try your hand panning for gold.

Apartheid Museum: In the afternoon you take a guided tour of the extraordinarily powerful Apartheid Museum. With its large blown-up photographs, metal cages and numerous monitors recording replays of apartheid scenes, you will get a sense of what it was like in the townships in the late 1970’s and 1980’s, dodging rubber bullets or teargas canisters. Your accommodation this evening is at a hotel in a quiet district of the city and dinner is at local restaurant.

Blyde River Canyon, God's Window and Bourke's Luck Potholes

Blyde River Canyon: After breakfast you drive to Mpumalanga Province. This afternoon you spend time looking out over ‘God’s Window’ at Blyde River Canyon – the third largest canyon in the world. You also visit the extraordinary Bourke’s Luck Potholes – natural water features of cylindrical potholes gouged into the bedrock of the river. There will be an evening potjiekos competition (outdoor cooking in a cast iron pot – a South African tradition) and accommodation is at Blyde River Adventure Camp.

blyde-river-canyon

Adventure morning on the Blyde River. Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.

Adventure Morning: The day begins with adventure by tubing on the Blyde River. This is an easy float down tame water and is great fun experience for all.

Wildlife Rehabilitation: After lunch you visit the Moholoholo Animal Rehabilitation Centre – a home for many of South Africa’s abandoned, injured and poisoned wildlife. Moholoholo also facilitates a number of successful breeding programmes and you will be able to handle some of the wildlife including the huge vultures and tame leopard. In the afternoon you continue your journey to your hotel in Hazyview along the Sabie River.

Responsible Travel School Trips

Elephant Whispers and Kruger National Park

Elephant Whispers: Early this morning you visit the Elephant Whispers sanctuary which was set up in 2007 to care for six elephants that couldn’t be released into the wild. This is a great opportunity for interaction with these gentle giants.

Kruger National Park: You then continue to the Kruger National Park, the most famous wildlife park in the world. You spend the day game driving and exploring the park. The Kruger has a greater variety of animals than any other park in Africa, including lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, rhino, cheetah, giraffe, hippo, zebra and many varieties of antelope. This evening’s accommodation is at Rondavel style huts at one of the rest camps in the park.

Kruger National Park - Big Five Game Drives

Big Five Game Drives: This morning and afternoon there will be guided game drives searching for the Big Five and other mammals. You learn about each species and how it has adapted to its environment. These game drives will pass through a variety of ecozones, each with their own vegetation that helped attract the different animals and birds who live there. There will also be an evening game drive in special open game driving vehicles to spot the nocturnal animals of the bushveld. The day ends with a Bush braai – a traditional barbeque – under an African Sky.

rhino-kruger

Swaziland: This morning there is a further game drive heading south through the Kruger and into Swaziland. You first travel to Ngwenya Glass where you witness first-hand the magical art of glassblowing. Swazi craftsmen and women – with age old artistry – breathe life into enchanting interpretations of the animals and birds of Africa – all handmade from 100 % recycled glass. You then continue to the Ezulwini Valley in Swaziland, nicknamed ‘The Valley of Heaven’, nestled between the capital, Mbabane and the town of Manzini. Accommodation at a local lodge.

St Lucia Wetlands

St Lucia Wetlands: You leave Swaziland early in the morning and head for a boat cruise on Lake St Lucia, where there is a multitude of birdlife to see as well as crocodiles and hippos. You then continue to the sub-tropical Dolphin Coast, Gateway to Zululand, the magnificent Nature Conservancy of Zinkwazi – a unique coastal experience of endless golden beaches, lush indigenous forests, and 8 km of untouched lagoon. At Zinkwazi Lagoon Lodge you will be surrounded by the amazing bird songs of the tropical forest. Your evening meal tonight is a traditional local Indian curry. Accommodation at Zinkwazi Lagoon Lodge.

Durban Marine World

Durban Marine World: This morning you drive to Durban to visit the unmissable uShaka Marine World which is one of South Africa’s premier marine parks. Although it continues to offer dolphin shows, which we do not endorse, there are many good reasons to visit the park as it will give students a superb insight into the diversity of marine life found in the Western Indian Ocean. The aquarium is visible from the surface and you can gaze into all of the larger exhibits which provides a unique bird’s eye view of the fish and sharks. The real aquarium experience is, however, underground where you enter the aquarium through a hole in a wrecked vessel and walk down three floors, past a restored skeleton of a southern right whale, into the superb aquarium galleries. As well as the aquarium, there are also a theme park section with a variety of water rides and slides.

14 Fun Things to Do in Durban

By Natascha Taylor · Last updated on May 28, 2024

Durban is South Africa’s third-largest city in terms of both land and population. It’s located in the KwaZulu-Natal Province along the country’s east coast. The first thing you might notice when hopping off the plane is the unique weather. Unlike Cape Town and Johannesburg, Durban experiences real heat and humidity. It has its own tropical microclimate and is where all the country’s palms and sugar grow.

Walk along the Golden Mile

Many don’t realize the incredible foreign influence on this African city until they visit in person. Durban is shaped by its colonial past, with strong influences from throughout Africa and India.

The city is built along the coastline, with an urban beachfront zone. While this part of the city was once glamorous and safe, it isn’t anything to write home about these days. Instead, visitors gravitate towards Umhlanga on the north coast and up to Scottburgh along the South Coast.

Having visited the city plenty of times over my years living in Cape Town, these are a few of my favorite things to do in Durban:

Walk along the Golden Mile

Golden Mile

Whenever I arrive in a new city, the first thing I like to do is explore on foot. To be honest, there aren’t many parts of Durban I recommend walking around alone. To put it lightly, the city center can be dangerous and unfriendly.

That said, the Golden Mile is one of the best parts of the city to explore. There is a good reason it’s one of the city’s main tourist attractions, stretching from the golden beaches, past iconic fishing piers, surf spots, and a ton of restaurants and cafes.

The mile runs along the coastline from uShaka Beach to Suncoast Casino. It includes a direct route to the Moses Mabhida Stadium, which will be discussed later. Some other major attractions along the walk include a Mini Town miniature museum and a popular picnic spot called Blue Lagoon.

Explore the Durban Botanical Garden

Durban Botanical Garden

Durban’s Botanical Garden might not be as famous as Cape Town’s Kirstenbosch Gardens, but it is still one of the best places to visit in the tropical South African city. Founded in 1849, the gardens are the continent’s oldest surviving botanic gardens and remain a major space for plant conservation and biodiversity education in Durban.

The gardens are open Monday through Sunday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. and until 5:45 p.m. during summer. Entrance to the garden is free, but donations are always appreciated.

Pro Tip : Make sure to visit when the Ernest Thorpe Orchid House is open. Established in 1962, this conservatory is home to over 75 species of tropical orchids and 6,000 plants. The gardens also have an impressive collection of tropical palms, cycads, and a butterfly habitat garden!

Spend a Day in the Valley of a Thousand Hills

Valley of a Thousand Hills

For a day trip like no other, take the road towards Pietermaritzburg to the Valley of a Thousand Hills. The valley is pretty big, but part of it can be reached within just thirty to forty minutes from Durban.

The PheZulu Safari Park, just a forty-minute drive from the city center, is a must for anyone who hasn’t been to the area before. Sure, it’s organized for tourists, but it offers an authentic taste of Zulu heritage and culture.

Surrounded by endless hills, you’ll hardly believe you’re just a short drive from the city. The iconic Gasa Clan performs Zulu dance shows four times a day, at 10 am, 11:30 am, 2 pm, and 3:30 pm, for the equivalent of $10 for adults and $6 for kids.

You can even hop on a guided open-air 4X4 game drive for as low as $15 per person!

Ride a Traditional Rickshaw on the Beachfront

Traditional Rickshaw

Along the Golden Mile, close to North Beach, Dairy Beach, and Bay of Plenty Pier, you’ll spot men dressed head to toe in traditional Zulu outfits, pulling rickshaws on wheels. These vibrant rides might be a tourist attraction, but this doesn’t take away from how fun and unique the experience can be!

As a kid, I always loved chatting with the drivers and hearing fascinating stories about the area’s history of rickshaws and Zulu culture. Rides cost around $5 for a ten-minute lap, and I advise you to tip your driver generously.

Pro Tip : There are only a handful of these hand-pulled passenger carts wheeling around the Durban beachfront these days, so make sure to arrive early to secure your seat.

Eat Your Heart Out with Curry

Curry

Durban is home to the largest population of people of Indian descent in Africa. In fact, the city is often called the ‘largest Indian city outside of India,’ so it’s no shock that Indian cuisine forms a huge part of Durban’s food scene.

The curry here is as authentic as curry gets. Make sure to try a traditional mutton curry, a local favorite.

Another famous street food is called Bunny Chow. To clarify, there is no bunny in this chow. Instead, bunny chow is a large roll (or sometimes a whole loaf of bread) hollowed out and filled with curry. Bunny chow costs as little as $2 to $3 per massive serving and is traditionally eaten with one’s hands.

Pro Tip : Food is typically spicy in Durban. If you can’t handle the heat, make sure to specify a ‘Cape Town Mild’ for no chili or ‘Durban Hot’ for plenty of spice.

Try Your Hand at a Curry Cooking Class

Curry Cooking Class

On the topic of curry, one of my favorite things to do in a foreign city is learning how to cook a traditional meal. There are a few cooking schools worth mentioning, including Gecko Culinary Adventures in Morningside, the Fusion Cooking School in Westville, and The Curry Queen in Hillcrest.

Depending on how experienced your instructor is, cooking classes start at around $10 per person per hour. Considering you usually get to eat what you cook, this is a small price to pay for a new skill and a meal!

Treat Yourself to a Spa Treatment at the Oyster Box Hotel

The Oyster Box Hotel

If there is one place worth splurging for a massage in Durban, it’s The Oyster Box. This iconic five-star hotel overlooking the Indian Ocean in Umhlanga has one of the country’s top-rated spas, with extensive health, beauty, and wellness treatments.

A two-hour full-body experience costs around $150, while a basic one-hour reflexology massage costs $70.

The Oyster Box Hotel

Pro Tip : Make sure to arrive early for your appointment. When you book a treatment, you can also access the spa’s relaxation room, plunge pool, and rain shower. The Hammam ceremony room can be reserved for an extra charge.

Head to the South Coast for a Beach Day

Amanzintoti

Just a 45-minute drive south of Durban’s city center, Durban’s South Coast is one of the most beautiful parts of the KZN province. Unlike the busy city, the streets are safe, and the water is clean here.

Some of the most popular South Coast towns include Scottburgh and Amanzintoti. A little further along the N2 highway, Margate and Port Shepstone are around an hour and a half drive from Durban. These small towns offer a totally unique feel from the bustling streets of Durban and are well worth a day trip.

Spend a Day in Umhlanga Rocks

Umhlanga Rocks

If you aren’t staying in Umhlanga already, I highly recommend spending time in this pristine neighborhood pocket. Located just north of the city center, Umhlanga is one of Durban’s most opulent neighborhoods, with some of the city’s best beaches, shopping, and nightlife.

While you’re there, make your way to the Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve, Whalebone Pier, and Umhlanga Arch for a bit of shopping. When the sun sets, Florida Road and Windermere Road in Morningside come alive with activity and are lined with great bars and clubs to grab a nightcap.

Learn How to Surf

Learn How to Surf

Durban is famous for its incredible surfing conditions, which are only made better by the temperate water temperature and year-round warm weather. The best beach to learn to surf at is Addington Beach in the city center, where small waves and warm water make for the perfect beginner conditions.

Rent a board and book a lesson at Learn 2 Surf Durban Surf School. A two-hour group lesson costs $30 per person. Or you could opt for a private one-hour lesson for $16.

Pro Tip : Before booking, find out if board and wetsuit rentals are included in the lesson price. Wetsuits aren’t always necessary, but they can make the experience more comfortable.

Watch a Soccer Game at the Moses Mabhida Stadium

Moses Mabhida Stadium

With its iconic ‘arch of triumph’ and unique lighting, Moses Mabhida Stadium is a jewel along the Durban beachfront. Built to accommodate soccer fans during the 2010 FIFA World Cup, it’s now a defining landmark of the city’s skyline.

Fourteen years later, the stadium still hosts various sporting, cultural, and social events. If your trip coincides with soccer season, I recommend watching a soccer match live at the stadium. Tickets start as low as $5 per person but get pretty expensive for better seats.

Pro Tip : check the stadium’s schedule and buy your tickets online well in advance to secure the best seats.

Walks & Marine Biology Study Trips

At tidal tao, we are dilly, silly and plain old passionate about the ocean. we see young people exploring the ocean with so much patience and excitement. they naturally have a sense of wonder and an affinity for nature. properly cultivated, these values can mature into ecological literacy, and eventually into sustainable patterns of living..

Children will inherit what we leave behind. And our educational program aims at making sure they inherit something wonderful. We offer a range of environmental education programs for school children of all ages as well as marine biology rocky shores walks. These walks are tailored to your specific group needs and led by expert marine guides and professional environmental educators.

Our coastline is a wilderness, a wilderness that rivals any game reserve or national park in it's size and diversity of animal species.  A large focus of our work and efforts is to simply get people to explore our inter tidal zone, see what is under the water, the variety of life, change our perceptions about the ocean and myths about ocean living organisms. The fact is our coast and ocean does not enjoy the same conservation benefits as land based nature reserves because it is seen as “separate” “out there” …we want to change that and this is the focus of our environmental education programs.

Contact us here to discuss your needs and options for an educational outing

Our Educational Tours For School Groups

  • Our program includes two accredited guides to ensure small group size - our guides have exceptional knowledge and experience working with school groups
  • Our program also includes the optional presence of a Lifeguard from the Specialised Rescue Unit for additional peace of mind and safety.
  • Ultimately, all proceeds from our commercial environmental education programs go towards funding less privileged schools to have the same experience.
  • This program is aimed at strengthening the skills associated with discovery, investigation and data recording – aligned to the CAPS goals of pursuit of new knowledge and understanding our world. The focus is, of course, to understand our natural world through Natural Sciences and Technology and most importantly, through fun outdoor adventures.
  • For families and the general public, these walks are great options for learning more about our marine ecosystems and see some amazing creatures
  • We have a range of educational materials which can be used by teachers post the trip and can also arrange for one of our team to visit your school and give a talk on marine biology and conservation related subjects.

We focus on ensuring children have fun and learn through discovery.
