Austin Studio Tour 2024

The free, self-guided Austin Studio Tour – an annual  Big Medium  program – invites visitors to discover new artistic talent, see working studios, learn about artists' tools, techniques and inspirations, and explore galleries. A combination of the popular East Austin Studio Tour and West Austin Studio Tour, Austin Studio Tour takes place over two weekends in November 2024.

East Austin Studio Tour 2016 2

Studios & Exhibitions

In 2023, Austin Studio Tour featured over 550 local artists and collaboratives. The 2024 lineup of artists will be announced on their website closer the the event date. Here are just a few studios and exhibitions featured in previous tours:

Artist and graphic designer  Judy Paul  creates mixed media paintings with acrylic paint, collage, pencil and screen-printing.  Rachel K. Bury  practices involves playful manipulations of flat material and the intricate balance of sculptural construction.  ArtUs Co  (formerly Pump Project) a North Austin art space that provides working studios and gallery facilities to emerging and established artists.

One of the original hosts of East Austin Studio Tour, Jennifer Chenoweth displays her own work as well as the work of several other artists in her space, Fisterra Studio . Chenoweth specializes in drawing, metal and mixed media. She gave a 2017 TedMed talk about her project  XYZ Atlas , a hedonic map that portrays the feelings, stories and life experiences of people living in and visiting Austin.  Cement Loop , a creative studio with a focus on exploring and supporting the diversity in the Windsor Park community, hosts creators with various artistic focuses.

Since  Ted Carey 's sculptural work often relies on the context of the given environment, the documentation proves as important as the object itself. Carey utilizes found objects and experiments with themes of tension (both physical and mental).  Cynthia Pierce 's   deepest desire is to make things, and her studio becomes a playground where each bowl and painting can stand complete. She works with Grolleg Porcelain in search of the perfect bowl.

Austin studio tour paints a picture with lineup of 520 participating artists this fall.

An artist in the Austin Studio Tour by Big Medium

Austin creatives welcome art lovers into their homes and collaborative studios to make organic connections every year.

The perfect crawl for art lovers and voyeurs alike, the Austin Studio Tour is turning 20 this year. It takes Austinites behind closed — or in this case open — studio doors across the city, showcasing the work of 520 artists, builders, and collectives in 2022. This time, the free self-guided tour runs from November 5-20.

Everything starts with a Group Exhibition and Kick Off at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center, with organizing help from Black creativity collective Origin Studio House. On November 1, these two organizations join Big Medium, the organizer of the tour, in yet-unannounced activities to warm up curious visitors.

The tour has undergone several transformations since it was founded, starting as the East Austin Studio Tour with only 28 participating studios, eventually adding a West Austin counterpart, and absorbing both into one city-wide extravaganza in 2021. On September 21, Big Medium released a long list of participants, this time without any East or West designations.

There is no 2022 map yet, but a map of the 2021 tour stops shows a wide north-to-west spread east of I-35. The West Side tours reach as far up as Anderson Mill, where Clint Atkinson shows his graffiti-like black and white portraits, and as far south as Manchaca, where Brian Phillips makes geometric paintings on reclaimed wood. Both artists have committed to the 2022 tour.

East of the highway, where it all started, a dense clump of studios from around main roads, especially East Cesar Chavez Street. On this more compact side, participants reach as far north as Salvador Rodriguez, a hyper-detailed desert landscape painter near the Walnut Creek Greenbelt, and as far south as colorful jewelry and wallet maker Anne Marie Beard, right off East William Cannon Drive. Neither of these artists are on the 2022 list.

The map puts the adventure in Austinites’ hands the old fashioned way — it’s just a static image that can and should be printed out. Of course, for now tour attendees can comb through for artists of interest, but past experience has taught many that simply following street signs on foot provides a unique and minimally stressful experience. In denser areas, pedestrians could easily hit half a dozen studios in four or five blocks, and grab snacks or lunch on the way.

For those who simply do not trust their whims to deliver randomly great taste, there are curated collections by business partners. (These are called “themed tours,” which is a bit misleading in that there is no map or other organization tool included — just a few selected works with attributions that viewers can add to their itineraries themselves.) It is unclear if themed tours are returning this year, but last year included lists of artists by experience at previous tours (none or at least ten years), age, and materials.

Some artists also offer virtual tours, and if the tour continues the standard set last year, they will all have mini galleries on the website. Similarly, business partners have their own tab, and listings including a description of services and social media links. Even though seeing even a fifth of these studios in person would be a herculean task, there’s something fun about how impossible it is to see it all. Just like the Austin art scene at large.

A full list of 2022 Austin Studio Tour participants (without addresses) is available at bigmedium.org .

welcome to clyde's

Play about formerly incarcerated kitchen staff brings laughter and redemption to austin.

A comedic play called Clyde's serves up a tale of second chances at Ground Floor Theatre starting May 16. The heartwarming comedy by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage blends humor and heart on a stage dedicated to amplifying the stories of historically marginalized communities.

The story revolves around the formerly incarcerated kitchen staff at Clyde's, a sandwich shop. As they navigate their new lives and their tough-as-nails boss, Clyde (played by Yunina Barbour-Payne), they find purpose and inspiration in their shared quest to create the perfect sandwich. Under the direction of Lacey Cannon Gonzales and Carl Gonzales, the cast has worked to bring these complex characters to life.

"Each performance offers a distinct experience; What occurs on a Friday night differs from a Sunday matinee," said the directors in an email to CultureMap, emphasizing the live allure of theater. "Nothing quite matches the atmosphere of sharing the same space, immersed in the energy of the actors and fellow audience members. Together, everyone is taking a collective journey."

While the play deals with heavy themes, it does so with a generous serving of humor. Reintegrating into society is, of course, not as simple as making a perfect sandwich, but the parallels are where truth can be found without forcing the point. The directors believe that laughter can be a powerful tool for connecting with audiences and driving home important messages.

"Humor serves as a powerful tool in storytelling," they continue. "We are fortunate to be working with incredibly talented actors that understand the energy and balance needed for this production. In rehearsals, we have worked together to bring nuanced perspectives to the characters. These conversations allowed us to navigate the comedic moments with finesse, while also delving into the heavier subject matter with authenticity."

Clyde's is comedic play by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage.

As an incubator for innovative and groundbreaking works, Ground Floor Theater aims to illuminate the experiences of often overlooked groups, providing a platform for their stories to be told and their voices to be heard. In addition to Clyde's, this season features works about the trans experience, institutionalized racism, and an Iranian's imaginings of a world he can't travel (season extra).

"Representation in theatre is incredibly important," says Ground Floor Theatre founder Lisa Scheps, also in an email. "I think seeing ourselves realistically reflected back from the stage gives us a little credibility. As a trans person, it was only recently I saw trans representation in the media that wasn’t derogatory or clownish and that had a huge impact on me. GFT really wants to shine a light on those communities that seldom bask in its glow."

Returning to this spoonful of sugar idea — humorous theater about complex and often heavy topics — Scheps encourages people to seek out some viewpoints outside of their comfort zone and experience through storytelling.

"Theatre is a safe and entertaining way to do that," she says. "Who doesn’t want to learn about other lives, experiences, and adventures?”

In keeping with Ground Floor Theatre's commitment to "theatre for everyone," tickets are available on a pay-what-you-can basis. Suggested prices are $25 for general admission. Shows run May 16 through June 1. Tickets available at groundfloortheatre.org

Making your way through the numerous studios, galleries and happenings can be exhausting, so it’s important to take breaks and stay nourished. Whether you’re starting your morning off with coffee, grabbing a bite in between studio visits, or ending the day with a beer, there are plenty of local businesses located in and around the EAST areas that you can pop into to recharge.

Park like a local

When it comes to navigating the tour, most areas are easily walkable. But to get from neighborhood to neighborhood you may need to drive. To help ensure that you aren’t spending all of your time looking for a spot, determine  where to park on the Eastside   before heading out.
