Where Is Dubai & The UAE?

The UAE is situated in the Middle East – more specifically in the Gulf (or Arabian Peninsula). This is the small peninsula of land separating Africa from Western Asia.

The UAE is nestled between Saudi Arabia and Oman , facing the Persian Gulf (which separates the UAE from Iran ). Other countries in the Gulf include Bahrain, Kuwait, Yemen and Qatar.

Despite Dubai being the biggest and most famous city in the UAE, Abu Dhabi is actually the capital.

Both Dubai and Abu Dhabi are very close in distance though: there is less than 100 miles between them and it takes just over an hour to drive between Abu Dhabi and Dubai .

Dubai is a really exciting city and is one of the best places to visit in The Middle East . It is definitely high on many people’s bucket lists, whether they plan to visit as a stopover before continuing their long haul flight elsewhere, or whether they plan to make a holiday to Dubai during the pleasant weather of the winter months.

Dubai has inspired many people – it has been featured in several movies and there is a sense of hope and dreams in the air.

If your trip to Dubai is your first time visiting The Middle East, it’s important to do a little bit of research beforehand to know what to expect, especially if you are a female solo traveller.

Whilst The UAE can be more relaxed than other Arabic countries in terms of what to wear, it is still important to respect the country’s cultural norms and dress appropriately.

In addition to dressing modestly, you’ll definitely need to bring lots of suncream as the sun is strong here!

The UAE has the same plugs as the UK, so make sure to bring a UK adapter if necessary.

Dubai tourism launches brand new international campaign to highlight unique destination experiences..

With the return of tourists to Dubai and the staggered re-opening of international markets, the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (Dubai Tourism) is ramping up its marketing efforts worldwide through a brand new global campaign, ‘Live Your Story’ designed to highlight the unique ways in which travellers can create their own special holiday experiences across the city.

The ‘Live Your Story’ campaign was launched as a digital activation on Emirates’ popular inflight entertainment system and will be gradually rolled out this month in 20 languages and via multiple platforms in key source markets that have reopened amid the pandemic. The campaign encourages visitors to enjoy the world-famous landmarks and attractions that are synonymous with Dubai’s tourism offering.  It underscores the many exciting choices that await travellers and invites them to customise exceptional and ‘Only in Dubai’ experiences to suit their tastes, as well as bond with and benefit from the diversity of cultures that are intrinsic to the social fabric of this global metropolis.

Issam Kazim, Chief Executive Officer, Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DCTCM) , said: “As Dubai continues to welcome international tourists, we are also constantly looking at innovative ways to sustain global interest and consideration for the city as the first choice destination for travellers. ‘Only in Dubai’ tourism campaign to underpin 25m visitor goal

Dubai’s tourism authority has revealed its new strategy designed to establish the emirate as the world’s most-visited city by 2025.

Launched under the slogan, “Only in Dubai” the plan includes a number of broad initiatives that Dubai Tourism said will help deliver 25 million tourists to the city by the middle of the next decade.

“One of the key pillars of Dubai’s Tourism Vision 2022-2025, the Only in Dubai [campaign] will deliver authentic and world-class end-to-end destination experiences across travel touchpoints that are tailored to relevant segments of tourists,” Dubai Tourism said in a media statement.

A key pillar of the strategy is the launch of the emirate’s Tourism’s Happiness Index, which according to the tourism body, not only measures Dubai’s ability to exceed service expectations, “but helps ensure that every visitor to Dubai becomes a passionate loyalist and a firm advocate of the city”.

Commenting on the launch of the initiative, Issam Kazim, CEO of Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DCTCM), said: “While our world-class propositions and experiences showcase the diversity of the destination offerings and provide segment-based preferences for tourists, we are working closely with our partners and stakeholders to curate, create and deliver personalised end-to-end experiences. This means that visitors will be able to enjoy memorable moments at every step of their journey, [which commences] from the time they start planning their trip to Dubai and even after they leave Dubai.

“By providing ‘Only in Dubai’ experiences, tourists are bound to leave the city in a happy frame of mind, carrying with them many memorable moments that will only make them want to come back or spread the word about Dubai’s delightful offerings among families and friends.”

Dubai Tourism said it will develop end-to-end Only in Dubai experiences in conjunction with a variety of private and public sector organisations and other stakeholders.

While a lot has been told or written about Dubai, there are still some hidden gems that can be found with a little bit of digging! To keep visitors aware of Dubai’s vibrant culture, exciting offerings and centuries-old history, the UAE government has launched a key promotional campaign, called Dubai Destinations.

We’ve put together everything you need to know about this exciting new government venture and what to expect as the initiative gathers momentum.

ABOUT DUBAI DESTINATIONS PROMOTIONAL CAMPAIGN

Launched in December 2021, Dubai Destinations is a global ad campaign that aims to promote tourism in Dubai. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai had the vision to make Dubai the world’s best place to live and visit. This initiative is a significant step in that direction.

The campaign will bring government departments and Dubai’s burgeoning creative community onto the same page so they can share the best of what the emirate has to offer.

When asked about the initiative, His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed, chairman of Dubai Media Council said:

“Inspired by the vision of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, to make Dubai the world’s best city to live and visit, we are launching an initiative to enhance the profile of Dubai’s unique destination offerings by engaging with both the local community and regional and global audiences.”

OBJECTIVES OF THE CAMPAIGN

The Dubai Destinations promotional campaign’s goal is to make people aware of Dubai’s culture, activities, sights, events and festivities so they are enticed to come and visit or live in the city.

The campaign will offer people a glimpse into the emirate’s leisure, cultural, dining and sporting experiences. The natural beauty of the Hatta region and Al Marmoon will also be shown to the world.

As per data compiled by Euromonitor International, a UK-based market research company, Dubai has been named first regionally and second globally amongst the Top 100 City Destinations Index 2021. The Dubai Destinations initiative is aimed at further boosting Dubai’s status as one of the safest places to visit in the world, both amidst and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

ORGANISATIONS PARTICIPATING IN THE DUBAI DESTINATIONS PROMOTIONAL CAMPAIGN

The Dubai Destinations promotional campaign will involve the following organisations:

• Department of Economy and Tourism
• Roads and Transport Authority (RTA)
• Dubai Municipality, Dubai Culture and Arts Authority
• Dubai Holding
• Dubai Sports Council
• The Government of Dubai Media Office

Dubai Media Office will also hire photographers, videographers, animators, influencers and digital media content creators to showcase Dubai’s top tourist attractions .

PLANS OF DUBAI MEDIA OFFICE TO INITIATE THE CAMPAIGN

Dubai destinations calendar.

Dubai Media Office will create a Dubai Destinations calendar with a key focus on outdoor activities.

The campaign will include guides that will offer people an insight into Dubai’s campsites, homegrown restaurants, outdoor activities and adventurous experiences.

Talking about the campaign, Her Excellency Mona Al Marri, Vice Chairperson and Managing Director of Dubai Media Council and Director-General of Dubai Media Office said,

”[Dubai Destinations Promotion Campaign] is a celebration of all that the city has to offer, the innovative campaign aims to introduce both domestic and global audiences to new experiences and encourage them to discover hidden gems, enjoy exciting activities, and share unforgettable moments in Dubai.”

The world’s largest fair, EXPO 2020 has helped Dubai attract thousands of visitors from across the globe. Thanks to over 192 EXPO 2020 pavilions , each offering a range of activities, the emirate has recorded over six million footfalls from all over the world since it opened in October 2021. This has elevated Dubai’s profile and opened up the eyes of the world to all the emirate has to offer.

Now, Dubai Destinations plans to offer Expo 2020 visitors other amazing experiences in the emirate. From public parks to entertainment venues, there’s so much that they can enjoy.

The Burj Khalifa becomes the tallest building in the world, soaring 828m high and welcoming thousands of visitors each year.

The UAE is gearing up to celebrate the 50 th year of the Union and host Expo 2020 from 1 October 2021 to 31 March, 2022.

What to Wear in Dubai

When it comes to Dubai, you will see locals and residents dress modestly. The only ones you will see in short shorts are tourists. Depending on the area, dress will be a bit different. When in the hotel and at the beach, beachwear is fine. But when visiting Old Dubai, ensure you dress modestly. For women, pants and shirts with sleeves are recommended. 

Packing Tips

I have always been a guide book person and physically having that book in your hand as you plan your day, in addition to blogs like this one, can help immensely. Pick up a Lonely Planet Guide to Dubai (or the kindle version) before your trip to the UAE.

Whether you want to keep the sun off your head or want to show a little modesty, a scarf goes a long way in the Middle East any time of the year. You can bring one with you or pick up one when you arrive, but don’t leave your hotel in the morning without it! It can serve as a hat to keep the sun off your head and neck in the summer and can add some warmth in winter and can offer modesty to cover shoulders for women.

A Grayl Water Bottle is something I recommend for every traveller, not just those going to the Middle East. Some people say the water is safe to drink from the tap, others say it is not; it is not something I am going to chance.  If you consider drinking at least 1-2 big water bottles a day while you are there, think of how much plastic that creates when every visitor and local.

With a Grayl, you can filter any tap water (or actually any water source) and have clean drinking water in seconds. Since most people travel with water bottles already, consider one like this with a filter so that you are not just pouring from big water bottles to small. It might sound expensive, but when you compare it to spending a few dollars per day on water while you travel (and do not forget how expensive the water is inside airports), you will pay for this very quickly.

An inexpensive Universal Travel Adapter is another must for the UAE. You will find an assortment of 220V plugs, from European 2 pin, another style of 2 pin and UK Plugs. While European 2 pin is most common, it is best to carry one of these adapters with you. With a handy USB input, you do not need to bring your plugs from home.

Sunscreen and moisturizer are musts when visiting the Middle East. The air is very dry. Do yourself a favor and grab some of this as well. Your lips will thank you!

Get into the Green Scene: Dubai launches new sustainable tourism campaign

From world bicycle day to international coastal clean-up day, here's how everyone can get involved in the eco-friendly initiative.

Dubai Sustainable Tourism is encouraging visitors and residents to have a more eco-friendly lifestyle with the launch of a new initiative.

The Get into the Green Scene campaign is set to raise awareness about Dubai's sustainable attractions and show residents and people visiting the emirate how they can incorporate environmentally friendly practices into their lives.

Revolving around a calendar of globally recognised sustainability days, including International Mountain Day and World Animal Day, the campaign will share simple ways for people to get involved with the theme of each occasion.

This will include simple suggestions that promote Dubai's natural spaces and put a spotlight on local organisations working towards a more sustainable planet.

“We are very proud to launch Get into the Green Scene, which promotes the ease in which visitors and residents can embrace sustainability-minded behaviours," said Yousuf Lootah, vice chairman of Dubai Sustainable Tourism.

"It also highlights the breadth of work that is being done across Dubai by our partners and stakeholders to ensure a positive impact on our environment."

The initiative is designed to help highlight sustainability in Dubai, a key part of the Year of the 50th campaign taking place to commemorate the UAE's golden jubilee celebrations.

The initiative follows Dubai Tourism's announcement last week that hotels in the emirate have until July 1 to reach sustainability targets.

June 3: World Bicycle Day

Bicycles are an environmentally friendly mode of transportation, and this World Bicycle Day, Dubai Sustainable Tourism is urging residents to hop on the saddle and enjoy one of the city's best bike rides.

Whether you're a complete beginner or expert rider, so long as you can withstand the summer heat, there's a track waiting for you.

Bikes are also available to hire in several places around the city. Try taking to two wheels at the  Al Qudra Cycle Track or Nad Al Sheba Park, or head out to Hatta to spin across mountain biking trails that cut across the Hajar Mountains.

July 3: International Plastic Bag Free Day

Every July 3, the world celebrates International Plastic Bag Free Day, when consumers are reminded to take reusable bags with them when shopping.

Dubai Sustainable Tourism is encouraging residents and visitors to say no to plastic bags whenever possible, but especially on July 3. It's also highlighting local eco-stores such as The Green Camel, which specialises in bamboo and beeswax products, or The Green Ecostore, which stocks a wide variety of plastic alternatives.

September 18: International Coastal Clean-Up Day

Located on the UAE's northern coastline, Dubai's beaches are among its big draws for tourists.

The diverse marine ecosystems found along these shorelines are also connected to the city's culture and identity, since Dubai was previously a  pearl-diving coastal town.

On September 18, as the world celebrates International Coastal Clean-Up Day, Get into the Green Scene will encourage people to join the Emirates Environmental Group's annual Clean Up UAE  campaign. The aim of this event is to remove waste and preserve beaches, desert and waterways across the country for future generations.

Last year, more than 5,000 people across Dubai and Abu Dhabi collected almost 13 tonnes of waste. This year, Dubai Sustainable Tourism is hoping to get even more people involved in the critical clean-up.

October 4: World Animal Day

To celebrate World Animal Day on October 4, Dubai Sustainable Tourism is inviting people to visit the city's natural surroundings and spot some of the wildlife that call the emirate home.

Head to Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve , the UAE's first unfenced nature reserve, or take part in a wildlife tour at Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, with more than 200 plant and animal species on site.  Al Qudra Lakes is the place to go for budding ornithologists – it's home to more than 170 different types of birds.

December 11: International Mountain Day

On International Mountain Day, the world turns its attention to the risks that the planet's peaks face from climate change and overexploitation.

In Dubai, to celebrate the global day, people are encouraged to head to Hatta, where plenty of adventures await in Al Hajar Mountains. From hiking trails and bike rides to campsites and horse-riding, there are plenty of ways to make the most of Dubai's natural mountains, and show them the appreciation they deserve.

The UAE’s new national logo was unveiled on Wednesday (January 8) following an online poll where the Nation Brand received more than 10 million votes.

The new logo was unveiled by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, and Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces.

The logo, named 7 Lines, bested two other designs. Because it garnered more than 10 million votes, the UAE will plant 10 million trees in Nepal and Indonesia.

Designed by 49 Emiratis, the new logo will “convey the UAE’s story to the world”, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid said at the ceremony in Qasr Al Watan, Abu Dhabi. The logo has an accompanying slogan, “Make it Happen”.

“The UAE Nation Brand tells the story of our union, our unity, our future and of a country that is firmly making its mark across the world. Our goal for the new brand is to enhance the Emirates’ global reputation, in which we invested thousands of teams throughout 48 years of constant work,” Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid said.

The new logo features seven lines that represent the unity of the leaders of the seven emirates. The seven lines, in the national colours, also shape the map of the UAE.

“The map of the Emirates is close to the heart of every citizen and resident of this country,” Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid said. “We appreciate everyone’s efforts to advance the glory of this map globally. We thank each individual and organization that helped in the implementation of this national project and those who voted from all over the world to select the UAE Nation Brand.” ICA/Expat Media

Tourism Slogans for Every Country in the World: From Catchy to Cringeworthy

You guys — I have gone down a rabbit hole. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I started searching for country tourism slogans to include on a Country Quick Facts Infographic I am creating for my newly-designed country category pages (check out the test run for Colombia here !).

Before I knew it, I had compiled a comprehensive list of the tourism slogans for every country and territory in the world! So I decided to rank the Top 20 Best and Worst tourism slogans just for kicks. And I also threw in a few tourism logos while I was at it!

It was interesting to see what catchy (or not-so-catchy) taglines countries have come up with to lure tourists, especially since (at the time of this writing) US citizens are banned from all but a handful of these countries due to the coronavirus.

Some countries opted for the easy go-to of alliteration (“Brilliant Barbados”; “Beautiful Burundi”; “Pristine Paradise Palau”; “Timeless Tuvalu”) or assonance (“Epic Estonia”; “Incredible India”). Other countries got a little more creative (Djibouti: “Djibeauty”; Slovenia: “I feel sLOVEnia”; Ukraine: “It’s all about U”).

A few countries decided to make some bold claims (“Dominican Republic Has It All”; “All You Need Is Ecuador”; Honduras: “Everything Is Here”), while smaller, lesser-known countries opted to just tell you where they are located (Andorra: “The Pyrenean Country”; Bosnia & Herzegovina: “The Heart of SE Europe”).

Without further ado, here is my ranking (in alphabetical order) of the Top 20 Best and Worst Country Tourism Slogans. Let’s get the cringeworthy taglines out of the way first before moving onto the catchy ones….

Time to say dubai: a slogan, a tweet, a towel.

Dubai, the most populous city in the UAE, billed itself as a tourist destination for decades, and ‘ Time to Say Dubai ’ slogan was used by the  tourism industry to promote the palmy hub with the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa.

When Magnus Carlsen, the World Chess Champion, learned that he will be playing Ian Nepo for the World Championship title later this year, he tweeted the familiar ‘Time to Say Dubai’ slogan, referring to the 14-round Championship Match that is scheduled for November 2021 in Dubai as part of the World Expo.

The expression seems very familiar not only because many have seen it in the magazines, but also because it’s a play on the Andrea Bocelli hit song (60 mln views on YouTube!) ‘ Time to Say Goodbye ’ . Chess conspiracy theorists even speculate that Carlsen hints that this might be his last Championship match in its current form.

Without reading too much into this (very sad) song, World Chess is happy to introduce the graphics that celebrate the upcoming Dubai Championship Match and the fact that all eyes will be on the epic battle between Magnus Carlsen and Ian Nepo, his long-time friend, competitor, and peer.

The ‘Time to Say Dubai’ graphics, designed by  Masterskaya for World Chess, will be released as a capsule merchandise collection that includes beach towels — it’s Dubai, after all. The graphics will also be released under Creative Commons license for chess organizers, sites, and broadcasters to use in broadcast designs. It’s done so that it can complement the official logo of the event when it’s released later this year.

Time to Say Dubai graphics and identity will also be used for the official World Chess Championship sets that will be released in conjunction with the World Chess Championship Match.

The Dubai logo and associated marks are owned exclusively by the Department of Economy and Tourism, Government of Dubai. Please read the below usage guidelines carefully for all of branded assets.

The Dubai logo and associated marks (the Marks) are proprietary and owned exclusively by the Government of Dubai, Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) and may not be copied, reproduced, or used in any way except for as specifically provided herein.  From time to time, DET may make certain of the Marks available for downloading and/or use by the general public, and these terms of use shall govern the permissions and restrictions regarding the use of such Marks accordingly. DET reserves the right to modify these terms of use at any time, and without prior notice by posting amended terms of use to this website. Visiting this website and/or downloading, accessing or using the Marks in any way shall indicate your acceptance of these terms of use.

Subject always to the Use Requirements and the Restrictions on Use set forth herein, the Marks may be used in the following cases only: 

(a)  Personal, Non-Commercial Use: The Marks may be used on a non-exclusive basis for personal, non-commercial purposes only. The permission granted herein is non-transferrable nor assignable to any person and/or entity. Title to and all rights of ownership in the Marks shall remain with DET at all times. All reasonable steps shall be taken to ensure that the Marks shall only be used for those purposes set forth herein and that no unauthorised use of the Marks shall be permitted.

Other than as set out above, the Marks may not be used for any other purpose whatsoever without the prior written consent of DET.

(a)   Brand Guidelines.  The Marks shall only be used in strict accordance with the guidelines as provided by DET. For any questions or clarifications with respect to proper applications of the guidelines, please contact us .

(b)   Attribution.  The following statement shall appear on any medium where the Marks are used: The Dubai logo is a registered trademark of the Government of Dubai, Department of Economy and Tourism and is licensed in accordance with the terms of use located at Terms of Use

(a)   No Commercial Use. The Marks shall not be used in any manner for direct or indirect commercial gain without the prior written consent of DET.

(b)   No Merchandising. The Marks shall not be used on any merchandised items such as t-shirts, mugs, souvenirs, cards, and/or other manufactured goods without the prior written consent of DET .

(c)   No Advertisements.   Unless otherwise provided herein, the Marks shall not be used in any advertising or marketing materials whatsoever without the prior written consent of DET .

(d)   No Disparagement. The Marks shall not be used and/or reproduced in any  manner which will or is likely to damage or bring into disrepute the good name, image and reputation of the Emirate of Dubai, the United Arab Emirates and/or DET .

(e)   Public Sensitivities. The Marks shall not be used in any manner which is will or is likely to cause association with any material and/or content which is politically sensitive, inconsistent with the laws and public policies of the United Arab Emirates. 

(f)   Protection of Rights. The Marks shall not be used in any manner which might adversely affect the rights of DET  in or to the Marks or the value of the Marks or otherwise be prejudicial to DET .   

(g)   No Endorsement or Association. The Marks shall not be used in a manner which implies association with or endorsement by the Emirate of Dubai, the Dubai Government or DET  of any company, product or service without the prior written consent of DET .  

(h)   No Alteration. The Marks shall not be altered, cropped, re-touched, edited and/or transformed in any manner whatsoever.  No derivative Marks may be created which include and/or are based upon the Marks without the prior written consent of DET .

DET reserves all rights with respect to the Marks not mentioned herein, and shall have the right to fully restrict the use of the Marks and/or place additional restrictions with respect to the use of the Marks on a case by case basis.

(a)   Right to Inspect.  DET shall have the right to inspect each use of the Marks, and, at its sole discretion, require modification and/or immediate removal of the Marks from any materials (whether in digital form and/or printed media).

(b)   Cease and Desist. DET may, at any time, require that you immediately cease all further use of the Marks, and at DET's  option, return to DET  or destroy or delete all materials bearing the Marks, or, at DET  option, take all reasonable measures to ensure the removal of the Marks and any copies of the Marks in circulation. Upon such notice, any rights to the Marks granted hereunder shall immediately cease and without further act or instrument revert to the DET .
