The Dew Tour starts Thursday in Des Moines. Here's everything you need to know

Portrait of Hannah Rodriguez

The Dew Tour, a global skateboarding competition, officially starts Thursday at downtown's new Lauridsen Skatepark, bringing the event to Des Moines for the first time. Here's everything you need to know about it.

What is it?

The Dew Tour is a global Olympic qualifying event for skateboarders and the only one that will be held in the United States. Athletes will compete to earn points to help them secure a spot on their country's Olympic team.

The Summer Olympics — tentatively scheduled to begin July 23 in Tokyo after being rescheduled from 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic — will be the first to feature skateboarding as an official event. It marks long-awaited recognition for the sport, which began in the mid-20th century in California and has since spread around the world.

When is it?

The 2021 Summer Dew Tour runs Thursday-Sunday. Some athletes arrived in Des Moines over a week ago to start practicing, and official practice sessions were held Tuesday and Wednesday.

Where is it?

The Dew Tour is the inaugural event at Lauridsen Skatepark, a $6.1 million venue at 901 Second Ave. on the west bank of the Des Moines River in the shadow of the Iowa Events Center, with views of downtown and the Iowa Capitol. Declared the largest skate park in the country, it encompasses 5 acres and offers 88,000 square feet of undulating concrete, including bowls, a pool, stairs and a promenade with dozens of features designed for board tricks and intricate maneuvers. There's also a skate-able "WOW" sculpture.

In connection with the Dew Tour:

  • Second Avenue will be closed from Park Avenue to School Street from 8 p.m. Thursday through 3 p.m. Monday.
  • Crocker Street is closed from Third Street to Second Avenue until noon Tuesday.

Who's competing?

More than 300 of the world's best skateboarders from every continent but Antarctica are competing in both men's and women's street and park skateboarding competitions. Notable participants include USA Skateboarding's Nyjah Huston, Sean Malto, Jagger Eaton, Cory Juneau, Mariah Duran, Jordyn Barratt, Brighton Zeuner and Jamie Foy.

Some international skaters to watch for include Aurelien Giraud of France; Pedro Barros, Pamela Rosa and Leticia Bufoni of Brazil; Misugu Okamoto of Japan and Keegan Palmer of Australia.

How can I watch?

The Dew Tour is usually open to the public. The organizers, however, instead handed out a limited number of free tickets this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

They said the tickets, required for access to the venue, were claimed within minutes. But you can still watch the excitement from your home or at numerous metro bars and restaurants via free, online livestream coverage. A full list of streaming services can be found on the Dew Tour website at DewTour.com .

If current ticketholders don't show up, the event may release their tickets to the public, so keep an eye on @DewTour on Twitter and DewTour.com for announcements.

What about the rain?

This week's weather definitely is not ideal, with at least a chance of rain forecast every day. Crews are equipped with squeegees and industrial fans to dry the skate park surface as the concrete can be dangerous when wet.

Dew Tour organizers say daily schedules have built-in cushions so they can postpone and reschedule events as needed. The goal, they say, is to avoid cancellations.

Although some events may be delayed, the organizers said the event won't extend past Sunday.

What else is going on?

  • Several Des Moines restaurants and bars are taking advantage of the excitement and fanfare surrounding the Dew Tour. You can catch a livestream at more than a dozen downtown spots near the skate park. Visit  https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/entertainment/2021/05/18/dew-tour-des-moines-2021-tickets-lauridsen-skatepark-skateboarding-how-watch-livestream/5134153001/  for a list of spots to check out.
  • The Dew Tour is sponsoring a virtual meet-and-greet with three competitors: Team USA Skateboarding's Mariah Duran, Sean Malto and Curren Caples. The skaters will join other professional athletes at 7:30 p.m. Thursday for a conversation about the skateboarding scene before a Q&A session. Registration is required at  us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_pgzX3klBRAygIHMZlaoNGA .
  • If this week makes you want to join the skateboarding community, Dew Tour is partnering with Skate DSM, a local nonprofit, to put on Learn to Skate Clinics. Classes are offered for beginner and intermediate skaters who are looking to get more involved in the sport. The classes will be held from 9-10:15 a.m. and 10:30-11:45 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot of the office building at 600 E. Court Ave. Registration costs $10 registration and is available at eventbrite.com/e/learn-to-skate-clinic-hosted-by-the-dew-tour-and-skate-dsm-registration-150659206743 .

Want to see what professional ski and snowboard athletes are up to? Check out these slopestyle and halfpipe ski and snowboard competitions. Read on for how to watch Dew Tour live.

Like Red Bull Rampage , X Games , and a few other select events, Winter Dew Tour is a must-watch for wintersports enthusiasts everywhere.

Even if you don’t know the difference between a double cork, switch flip, or nose butter, you’ll still enjoy watching the ski and snowboard talent that’s about to hit the pipe at Copper Mountain, Colo., this weekend.

Who to Watch

Danny Davis hitting air at practice in the halfpipe at Copper Mountain

U.S. pro athletes to watch include snowboarders Red Gerard , Danny Davis , Julia Marino, Shaun White, Chloe Kim, and Kiana Clay as well as freeskiers Alex Ferreira , Maggie Voisin, David Wise , Devin Logan, and more.

International athletes to watch include snowboarders Mark McMorris , Stale Sandbech, Zoi Sadowski-Synnott , and Jan Sherrer as well as skiers Kelly Sildaru, Tess Ledeux, and Mark Hendrickson.

And while the competition is big, the stakes are even bigger. Athletes’ Dew Tour performances will also receive points on a system that will determine which athletes go to the Olympics to represent Team USA.

There are currently four Olympic snowboard events (slalom, cross, halfpipe, and big air) and four Olympic freeski events (ski cross, halfpipe, slopestyle, and big air), many of which will throw down at Dew Tour.

Big air, which was added as a snowboard event at the Olympics in 2018, will debut as a freeski event for the first time at the 2022 Olympic Games.

How to Watch Dew Tour

Teenage skateboarders reigned supreme at Dew Tour in Des Moines on Saturday (30 July).

Olympic champion Nishiya Momiji and USA's Gavin Bottger came out on top of their respective competitions after dominant performances.

Japan's Momiji, who is 14 years of age, claimed first place in the women’s street competition thanks to a stunning final run score of 95.33

Brazil's Pamela Rosa was second with 84.33 while 12-year-old Chloe Covell of Australia rounded out the women's podium after earning a 81.66-score in her first run of the day.

The men's park competition was just as thrilling.

Bottger came out in his first run and set the bar high with an 88.00-score that could not be beaten.

Speaking on the Dew Tour broadcast after the win, the 15-year-old was a little lost for words. "I'm on cloud nine. Everyone skated really good. Keegan's insane. Thank you."

Second place was claimed by Brazil's Luiz Francisco earning a 86.33 from the judges.

Meanwhile Tokyo 2020 gold medallist Keegan Palmer saved his best for last. In his third and final run the 19-year-old Australian secured third spot on the podium with a highest score of 85.00.

On Friday (29 July) Sky Brown took out first place in the women’s park competition with a winning run score of 89.66

Portugal's Gustavo Ribeiro won the men’s street final with an 89.00-score.
