Can I go to Denmark? Travel restrictions from the UK

By Sarah James

Copenhagen

Travel to Denmark is currently allowed, but what are the rules for travel? Here's everything you need to know to get up to speed.

What do the new rules mean about travelling back from Denmark?

As of Friday 18 March 2022, there are no Covid travel rules in the UK, which means that returning travellers do not need to test, quarantine or fill in a passenger locator form , regardless of their vaccination status. The UK government will also stop managing any quarantine hotels from the end of March.

Previously, fully jabbed travellers did not need to take any tests to return to the UK but had to fill out a passenger locator form, while unvaccinated travellers arriving from Denmark had to pay to take a PCR test on day two and fill out a passenger locator form. They were not required to self-isolate before or after the day two test, even if the result was positive.

Are Brits allowed to visit Denmark?

Yes, although rules on arrival depend on your vaccination status. Those who have been fully-jabbed at least two weeks before, and who had their last jab no more than 270 days ago, can enter Denmark for any reason without quarantining, so long as they can present proof of their vaccination status.

Anyone who can prove they have recovered with a positive PCR test taken more than 11 days but less than 180 days ago will also be able to enter the country without having to isolate.

Those who are not yet fully jabbed must take a Covid-19 test within 24 hours of arrival in Denmark.

Denmark has officially reopened its borders to fully vaccinated American and British travelers, the country's tourism marketing organization VisitDenmark announced on June 4.

To be recognized as fully vaccinated, a visitor must have received the final dose of a European Medicines Agency–approved vaccine at least 14 days before arrival. Vaccines approved by the EMA include Moderna, Vaxzevria (also known as Astra Zeneca), Vaccine Janssen, Comirnaty, Johnson and Johnson and Pfizer.

Fully vaccinated travelers will no longer be required to provide a negative COVID-19 test or isolate upon arrival. Unvaccinated children traveling with vaccinated people, as well as pregnant or breastfeeding women, will be required to present a negative PCR test taken no more than four days before arrival.

How to prove you've received the vaccine and can travel

Danish citizens are required to have a corona passport which proves a person has either been fully vaccinated, previously infected or has tested negative within the past 72 hours. Though there have been talks about possibly making this a requirement for all travelers, no new protocols have been officially announced.

The relaxation of Denmark's restrictions comes as many other European countries like Greece , France , and Spain have also announced plans to begin welcoming travelers this summer.

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

All of Britain except Wales moved to Denmark’s travel red list as cases surge

Denmark has moved all countries in Great Britain except for Wales to its travel red list, the country’s foreign office has announced.

It comes as Boris Johnson prepares to lift practically all Covid restrictions in England on Monday, including the mandatory wearing of face masks.

Scientists from across the globe held an emergency summit this week in which they called the Prime Minister’s plans for so-called ‘Freedom Day’ a threat to the world.

They said that as a major global transport hub, any variant that takes hold of Britain would soon spread to other countries.

Senior adviser to the World Health Organization, Prof José Martin-Moreno, told the online meeting: ‘We cannot understand why this is happening in spite of the scientific knowledge that you have.’

But Downing Street hopes to build a wall of immunity over the summer, as more people are vaccinated and others – particularly the young – recover from infections and develop antibodies.

METRO GRAPHICS Daily vaccinations up to 15.07

Yesterday saw another 50,000 cases recorded in the UK – the highest daily rise since mid-January.

Today another 54,674 infections were confirmed by the Department of Health, while a further 41 people have died within 28 days of testing positive for the virus.

Thanks to the country’s high vaccination rate, deaths are rising at a much slower rate, but concerns still remain about a third wave spiralling out of control.

Earlier this week, England’s chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty said Covid hospitalisations were doubling every three weeks.

Despite the Government’s previously optimistic tone about unlocking restrictions on Monday, ministers and scientific advisers are now advising people to exercise caution next week.

daily cases July 17th Metro Graphic

The Prime Minister may have said his ‘roadmap’ out of lockdown is ‘irreversible’, but as scientists predict daily cases could reach 100,000 in a matter of weeks, further restrictions may be needed by September.

Denmark’s move comes after the France was exempted from new rules allowing fully vaccinated people returning to England from amber list countries to skip self-isolation.

It is thought ministers made the last minute decision to keep cases of the Beta variant – first identified in South Africa – at bay.

Many double jabbed Brits were left furious when they learnt they would have to isolate at home for 10 days when they return.

Denmark Reopens to Vaccinated American Tourists — What to Know

The country will reopen on Saturday to American and British travelers who received an approved vaccine.

denmark travel restrictions from uk

Fully vaccinated American tourists will once again be welcome in Denmark starting this weekend, VisitDenmark told Travel + Leisure on Friday.

The country will reopen its borders on Saturday to American and British travelers who received a vaccine approved by the European Medicines Agency, which includes the Moderna, Pfizer/BioNTech, and Johnson & Johnson shots. Tourists must arrive at least 14 days after they receive their final shot.

Going forward, fully vaccinated Americans will be exempt from pre-arrival testing or isolation protocols, according to VisitDenmark. Unvaccinated children who travel with their parents or guardians, however, will still have to get tested.

"Denmark is very excited to welcome back American travelers," Katinka Friis, a spokeswoman for VisitDenmark, told T+L. "So many new places and experiences around Denmark have been in the works over the last year, and it will be amazing to have the Americans come and explore everything they have been missing out on."

The relaxing of restrictions follows several other European countries that have begun to welcome American tourists in recent weeks, including Croatia, Italy, and Greece. It also comes as the European Union prepares to open its borders to vaccinated foreign travelers, including from the United States.

To facilitate opening borders, the EU has developed a COVID-19 digital certificate — which may also be available to citizens from non-EU countries — that would allow travelers to upload proof of a vaccine, proof of a negative COVID-19 test, or proof they contracted the virus and recovered.

Earlier this year, Denmark developed its own digital vaccine passport specifically for Danish citizens.

When tourists do head to Denmark again, they will be able to visit the world's first happiness museum , which opened in Copenhagen last year, as well as the immersive H.C. Andersen's House (a museum dedicated to beloved author Hans Christian Andersen), which is set to open on June 30.

Denmark is part of the Schengen agreement, which eliminated border passport control between Schengen countries in Europe. This means you no longer need to stop or show your passport when travelling between Denmark and Germany or Denmark and Sweden. You must still have your passport with you, however, when travelling in Schengen countries as a form of identification.

Following Brexit, UK citizens can travel to any country in the Schengen area, including Denmark, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa.
