Best time to visit sikkim .

Depending on the tourism experience you are looking for, you can select the dates for your Sikkim tour. It will help you choose a suitable trip itinerary and pick the best fit from the offered Sikkim tour packages. Go through the following to learn about season-wise Sikkim tourism;

Sikkim in Winter

Sikkim experiences winter from November to March. It is the coldest period in the region, with an average temperature range of -5°C to 10°C. While the conditions remain quite cold, they offer great opportunities for various tourist activities, including sightseeing, adventure activities, general exploration, etc. Winter is widely considered the best time to go to Sikkim to witness snowfall. Frequent snowfall is seen in various parts of the state, and while it remains extremely cold, the scenic views due to the snow-covered landscapes, forests and frozen lakes make everything worth the effort. However, there’s one downside of visiting Sikkim during winter. Due to heavy snow, most high-altitude locations become inaccessible, leaving only the low-altitude zones for tourism. Note that this period is the best time to go to Sikkim for individuals willing to engage in skiing, snowboarding and other winter adventures. Find great deals on Sikkim tour packages on Thomas Cook.

Sikkim in Summer

The summer season in Sikkim is quite charming and offers overall pleasant weather conditions, which is very much in favour of tourism. The season stretches from April to June in the region, with days being warm and nights comparatively colder. The average temperature range during these months is from 8°C to 25°C. Downpours are not very common during this season and the days remain clear and sunny. It is the best time to go to Sikkim for individuals aiming for Sikkim sightseeing and exploration. April is considered the best month to visit Sikkim as the weather conditions remain neither too hot nor cold, which is preferred by many. The hill stations and other high-altitude areas are the best places to visit in Sikkim during summer. This season is also the best time to go to Sikkim for most adventure activities, such as mountain biking, yak safari, rafting, trekking, paragliding, etc. As the tourist crowd remains high during summer, consider booking Sikkim tour packages, accommodations, transfers, etc., in advance. Find deals on Sikkim tour packages for the summer season on our page.

Sikkim in Monsoon

The monsoon season in Sikkim stretches from July to September, bringing heavy downpours to the region. While the temperature remains pretty pleasant on paper, the weather conditions are not entirely favourable for Sikkim sightseeing, adventures, and other tourist activities. Even though the frequent rain enhances the natural beauty of Sikkim, it also creates issues that affect tourism, such as road blockage, landslides, slippery roads, etc. Most tourists avoid visiting Sikkim during these months. However, some consider the monsoon season the best time to go to Sikkim for budget tours. If you are visiting during this period, make sure to check weather reports before stepping out, carry rain gear for the trip and consider hiring a Sikkim tour guide. Check out us at Thomas Cook for the best Sikkim tour packages.

While looking for suitable Sikkim trip packages, consider choosing the right mode of transport to reach the destination for your trip. Here are some of the best ways to reach Sikkim for your vacation;

The most popular choice that comes to mind when deciding on a mode of transport to reach Sikkim is flight. Known for its convenience, flight travel gives individuals more headroom to play with in terms of setting up the Sikkim itinerary. Pakyong Airport is the only airport in the state, which can be your first preference. It is a seasonal domestic airport, located just 35 kilometres from Gangtok. Another popular choice is the Bagdogra Airport in West Bengal, 130 kilometres from Gangtok. Individuals can find flights from major airlines to both of these airports. For reference, a non-stop flight from New Delhi to Gangtok only takes 2 hours and 50 minutes. After landing at the airport, tourists can consider hiring a taxi or a rental car to travel the remaining distance.

Most Sikkim trip packages by Thomas Cook come with the choice of optional flights, which makes your vacations simpler.

Another popular alternative that tourists can consider for their Sikkim tour is rail travel. On top of being cost-efficient, it is quite convenient for most types of Sikkim tours. However, you should know that the state doesn’t have a major railway station of its own. The two major railway stations nearest to Gangtok are Siliguri (128 km) and Jalpaiguri (172 km), both of which are in West Bengal. These railway stations are connected with major cities in India via frequent long-distance trains. After reaching the station, tourists can simply cover the remaining distance to Gangtok via bus, taxi or rental car. This journey by road usually takes four to five hours but may take longer in case of heavy traffic.

Individuals looking to visit Sikkim on a budget often opt for road transport. The state features a very well-designed road network, connecting it to various parts of the country. The journey to Sikkim by road while witnessing the lush forests, mesmerising hills and the smooth-flowing Teesta River makes for an unforgettable road trip experience. Individuals can opt for bus travel, with services offered from nearby cities like Kolkata, Bagdogra, Jalpaiguri, etc. You can also find rental cars and taxis from these locations. If you are looking for an adventure, consider travelling to Sikkim by bike. Depending on your choice of transfers, you can set up the best Sikkim itinerary for the trip.
