The nearest major airport to Gangtok is Bagdogra Airport (IXB) also known as Siliguri Airport. Distance from Bagdogra Airport to Gangtok is approx 120 KM which will take roughly 4-5 hours of road journey. Sikkim has its own airport as well which is only 30 KM away from Gangtok. This airport’s name is Pakyong Airport ( PYG) located in Pakyong Town but this airport has very little connectivity of flights.

Reach Sikkim/Gangtok by Train or Bus

If you are planning to come by train then you can book your tickets to New Jalpaiguri Junction (NJP) or Siliguri Junction (SGUJ). NJP to Gangtok is around 118 KM while from Siliguri Junction it will be around 112 KM away. You can reach Siliguri by bus as well which is well connected to nearby cities like Kolkata.

However, you need to get a permit to visit specific places which falls under ( P.A.P and R.A P) i.e. You are required to get a permit to visit Nathula Pass, Changu Lake & Baba Mandir in the Eastern Part of Sikkim and North Sikkim (Lachen & Lachung) which will be arranged by authorized tour operator only. Nathula Pass is a mountain pass that connects Sikkim with Tibet. Nathula Pass remains closed on Monday and Tuesday. However, it often gets closed due to security issues, Indo-China tension and landslides. You should always check for the latest information before planning to visit Nathula Pass. You need a special permit to visit Nathula Pass, you can talk to your Travel Agent / Tour Operator if you wish to visit Nathula Pass.

About Sikkim

Sikkim, state in India,is located in the northeastern part of the country, in the eastern Himalayas. It is one of the smallest states in India. Nepali is the lingua franca of Sikkim, while Sikkimese (Bhutia) and Lepcha are spoken in certain areas. English is also spoken and understood in most of Sikkim. Other languages include Dzongkha, Groma, Hindi, Majhi, Majhwar, Thulung, Tibetan, and Yakha. Thanks to Manavendra & TourMyIndia for helping in planning a good travel itinerary for us. It was a wonderful 9-day trip covering Gangtok - Pelling - Darjeeling in October 2021. The journey started with a sudden challenge due to roadblock

from Bagdogra to Gangtok, but he and his team (driver and hotel staff) ensured that we were taken care during the travel and warm food welcomed us when we reached late night at hotel. 1. By Air: Sikkim has only one airport, Pakyong Airport, which is located 26.9 km from Gangtok. You can reach Gangtok from Pakyong Airport in about an hour. Pakyoung is one of the five highest airports in India and is situated at an altitude of 4590 ft. The airport receives flights from Delhi, Kolkata and Guwahati every day. You can fly by Indigo, Air India, Air Asia, Vistara and Spice jet to reach this airport. Pakyoung does not receive any international flights. There is another airport that is closer to Gangtok, Bagdogra Airport, which is 121 km away from the town. The airport receives flights from several cities in India as well as from neighbouring countries such as Bhutan. 

2. By Road:

Bus: Sikkim Nationalised Transport (SNT) are Sikkim government buses that ply between Siliguri and Gangtok. The route from Siliguri, Bagdogra, and New Jalpaiguri meets at Sevoke Road and proceeds by National Highway NH10 through a scenic route with the beautiful Teesta River flowing alongside and mountains surrounding all over. 

Taxi: You can also avail of private or pre-paid taxis both from New Jalpaiguri Junction railway station and Bagdogra Airport which will take you to Sikkim along the same route. 

Shared Jeeps: Shared Jeeps are also available at both the railway station and airport and usually take about 10 people at a per-person rate. 

3. By Rail: Sikkim does not have its railroad or station as yet, but those travelling by train can easily reach the nearby railway stations at Siliguri, located 146 km away and New Jalpaiguri (NJP), located 187 km away. There are many trains connecting the Siliguri and New Jalpaiguri stations with Kolkata, Guwahati, Mumbai and Delhi. Once you get down at either of the stations, you can avail of pre-paid taxis, shared jeeps and cabs for Gangtok easily.
