EXPLORE SYDNEY’S HISTORY AND PUBS

Drink In History on this historic walking tour of some of Sydney’s oldest pubs. Between watering holes, your guide will take you through the alleys and cobbled streets of The Rocks as they share the gossip, shouts, and stories of Australia’s first European settlement. Hear about the legends, gangs, and hauntings of this distinctive neighbourhood as you sample some of its finest libations.

After your Sydney pub tour, you can join your tour mates and other revellers at an iconic pub for a meal and another beer, or two…

This Sydney tour includes a choice of a beer (285ml/10oz), house wine, or soft drink at each pub and a two and a half hour guided walking tour of The Rocks, highlighting:

  • The fight for the title “Sydney’s Oldest Pub”
  • How the Larrikin Gangs ruled the Rocks
  • What’s the 6 O’Clock Swill?
  • Where Bubonic Plague started and how it was controlled
  • The fight for The Rocks
  • Sydney’s oldest haunted place
  • And more stories, myths, and legends than you can pack into two and a half hours of fun

*SOMETIMES THINGS CHANGE – Because our pub tours are truly behind the scenes experiences sometimes our plans need to change to accommodate brewery operations. And sometimes we just know about beer goings on around town that are worth checking out, so we may change some parts of our tours. Whilst these changes are rare, we do reserve the right to make them. If you do have a MUST-SEE beer spot, please let us know when making your booking and we’ll do all we can to make it happen.

This tour was a hit with Robin Oliver as our guide! Robin make The Rocks come alive with her in-depth knowledge of not only her country's history but she understood how other country's actions played into the development of Sydney. She is an exceptional tour guide who has the ability to make the past come alive in our minds as well as having a twinkle in her eye and a ready laugh. I particulary enjoyed the Celtic Red Ale at Harts Pub and the sparkling brut's along the way. We would definitely take another tour with Robin and hope you find it as engaging as we did!

I have actually done this tour twice now and enjoyed it so much both times. The most recent time was with Dave P and he was hilarious and provided a ton of fun and interesting information. Just a solid Aussie guy. If you are looking to enjoy a few hours walking through the rocks and having a few beers I highly recommend this tour.

We had a great time on this pub tour. Our guide Gregg (aka Dave) was very knowledgeable and entertaining. His enthusiasm with the stories he shared about the pubs and the history of Sydney throughout our walks along the way were great! We chose the 6:30 tour - which had an added benefit of starting the walk when still light and ended after dark which gave you a night time perspective of pub hopping. I would highly recommend this tour. Thanks Gregg for a wonderful time!!!!!

This walk was almost as awesome as the ghost walk we did in southern ireland. Rob was wonderful. Had so much to share with us and the history and folk lore of the area. It was wonderful. Great job by rob keeping us entertained and Greg fir shepherding us through these 4 drinking spots. We loved it. Thanks

Dave (Greg) was an awesome tour guide! I found the brochure at the Aussie hotel the night before and was excited to book a pub crawl in Sydney. Upon arriving, Greg greeted me with a brief description of the beers at the first pub as well as an intro on the history of the Rocks areas. Each pub on the tour had a unique history and experience. I learned so much about the city and had a variety of beers that are only found in Australia. Greg answered all of my questions about the Rocks area as well as gave me helpful tips on how to have a "Barbie on the beach" on my walk from Coogee to Bondi tomorrow. Really great tour from an extremely knowledgeable local! Highly recommend!

Having been to Sydney several times, we were looking for a tour that would be both insightful, fun, sincere and off the beaten path. We have done tours with such aim before, from Sydney to London. Not only was Dave's tour an amazing insight into - in our case - Balmain, but Gregg was a fabulous tour guide, partner, insightful Sydneysider that we would come back to tour with anywhere, anytime. While some pub tours (or tours in general) can be dry or formulaic, Gregg's style lends itself to an incredibly fun afternoon that makes you truly part of the afternoon, not just a spectator. Clearly able to adapt to his clientele, he was a joy to be with, learn from, and convinced us to do Dave's Tours again in a heartbeat when we return to Sydney!

We have been on pub tours in the past and Dave was very informative about all the history of not only the pubs the The Rocks. Beers were great!! Lots of selections. Not to bad of a walk most were close together.

Photo of Grace F.

Greg was a great tour guide, the tour itself was informative and fun. BUT we were planning to go to the 930 dinner option since we couldn't make dinner before before, and that night in the Rocks all of the bars, especially the Australian, were all incredibly crowded, and the restaurant who was supposed to give us dinner wouldn't serve us. I wish Dave's was better prepared for this situation or would have given us money/credit back since they knew the likelihood of us getting dinner was slim. We probably wouldn't have spent this much on the bar tour alone without dinner, and now knowing dinner won't be guaranteed wouldn't recommend for the price.

Photo of Will S.

This was a fantastic tour. Gregg was an enthusiastic tour guide, and did a great job of really giving us a local's view of the area. I would highly recommend to anyone looking to get an authentic feel for Sydeny.

Photo of Sara S.

This was just awesome! Our tour guide, Gary, (or Gaz) gave us an intimate look the Sydney's pubs and history behind craft brewing. He was enthusiastic about beer and gave a personal touch to the Rocks. This was one of our favorite activities during our week in Sydney, highly recommend!!

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Nick Schroeder, right.

Nick Schroeder, 42, of Portland, is communications manager and multidisciplinary programmer for Space, a nonprofit arts venue in Portland. He’s also an actor, director and ensemble member with Mad Horse Theatre Company in South Portland. A native of Old Orchard Beach, he’s worked as a journalist and editor at several local publications.

As much as I like bopping around the state by myself, I’ll spend my perfect Maine day with my partner, Mallory, and our nearly 3-year-old toddler. The kid’s in the stage of life where she asks why to just about everything, and that question makes for good conversation.

Getting dressed (finding pants, socks, etc. and negotiating their deployment) can take a while in my house, so we’ll put on WMPG to keep the energy loose. I’ll pour a good cup of coffee, Speckled Ax Early Riser preferred , in my clunky travel mug. Then we’ll get things cracking at that one real good climbing tree in the park for a little proprioceptive rinse. The branches are real low to the ground and I don’t have to worry about my kid taking any nasty falls.

The Palace Diner in Biddeford. Shawn Patrick Ouellette/Staff Photographer

Will Zu Bakery still have croissants by now, or is that too much morning meandering? The neighbors tend to swarm the little West End spot – how is it this good? – and it can quickly sell out. If that’s the case, we’ll drive south. Actually, scratch that – Mallory will drive this leg, and I’ll bike. Our destinations will be the same, Palace Diner (in Biddeford). I’ll have the omelet du jour and those great big potatoes, and maybe a bite of my kid’s pancake – the dad handbook clearly states that you must eat your children’s leftovers. We’ll all poke our heads inside Biddeford Vintage Market and see what new vendors they’ve got (my aunt Barb runs the place with some friends) before making a quick spin into Color.Sound.Oblivion to check their newly stocked records.

The Basico – an arepa stuffed with chicken, cheese and pico de gallo – with a side of pan de bono and a cup of verduritas (spicy green sauce) from Maiz in Portland. Ben McCanna/Staff Photographer

With family who live nearby, I’ll be able to ditch the bike and hop into the car, heading north. We’ll stop in Portland to grab a couple of arepas for the road from the outrageously good Colombian food restaurant Maïz, and head to South Paris. In this fantasy, the Celebration Barn has a perfectly timed matinee show, and true to form, it’s equally enchanting for kids and adults.

dave's pub tours

The Celebration Barn in South Paris. Andree Kehn/Sun Journal

After that, we’ll drive to Rockland (here’s where the kid naps) and head to a beach (any beach) before I pop into Curator , one of few consignment shops that bothers to stock nice stuff for tall fellas. Then it’s over to Rock City Cafe for a refill and a poke around Hello Hello Books behind the cafe. Last time, I found a nice used paperback of a Judy Chicago biography. Will I get this lucky again?

dave's pub tours

A stack of books at Print: A Bookstore in Portland. Ben McCanna/Staff Photographer

Returning to Portland, we’ll have had our fill of driving and Raffi sing-alongs. It’s time for our A-list East End retail trifecta – Ferdinand  for handmade wonders, Starry Eyes  for snazzy kids’ stuff, and Print: A Bookstore (more books!).

For dinner, the ideal is Asmara , the great Eritrean gem, where we as a family can share big communal plates of colorful food using only our hands as utensils. After we put the kid to bed, I’ll text a friend, and if his kid’s asleep, too, we can sneak out for a little nightcap at the Continental and discuss the news.

How would you spend your perfect Maine day? Send your itinerary, in 500 words or less, with a little about yourself, to [email protected] .
