2024 ADVENTURES

Time for travel book your 2024 adventure – limited places remaining, don’t just take our word for it…, our cycling and walking tour of vietnam was amazing. we saw so much and had so many experiences in the time we had that it is hard to believe it all. the guides thang, bao and trung were so well organised that it all went like clockwork with the great drivers who were always there to pick us up right on time.from the floating markets to the great restaurants to the home visits, cooking class, coffee making experience, kayaking, boat ride at tam coc- it was all fantastic.the guides were very knowledgeable about the various parts of the country that we visited but they were also generous in sharing thir own and their families experiences of life in vietnam over past generations. they are also very passionate about their love of their country.the accommodation and food was great. we loved experiencing the delicious vietnamese food.the itinerary worked well and was flexed in some cases to better fit the circmstances. the managing of 2 parallel groups (cyclists and walkers) was done well where we joined up at various points to do joint activities., thang and trung were excellent guides. from the moment we initially met the lads to the last day of the tour, they were always there. they were so helpful, it was wonderful to know everything was taken care of. we learnt a lot of local knowledge from them.we would have no hesitation recommending others to join the vietnam essentials tour. thank you, trip was fantastic from start to finish. great team - friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating. fabulous way to get to see and know a country. would do it again in a heartbeat thanks grasshopper, the grasshopper shikoku tour is a trip of a lifetime. cycling through local villages and beautiful landscapes with a fun group and thoughtful guides created the perfect combination of culture and activity. being relatively new to cycling, i found some of the mountain climbs to be especially rewarding and memorable. i was impressed with the routes grasshopper designed, taking lesser traveled roads and always making a point to experience local japanese food and culture. the hotels along the way were excellent, with hot springs to help relax after an adventurous day. highly recommend anyone, no matter your fitness level, or whether you're solo or in a group, to join this tour if you can, you won't regret it., we had a fantastic five days with grasshopper in northern laos. we hiked and biked in the most stunning scenery. we stayed in outstanding hotels. we spent a day on a boat going down the mekong. it was an amazing experience and our guide looked after us beautifully., having never been on a grasshopper tour before i was unsure what to expect. the experience far exceeded my expectation with a nice mix of cycling and culture. exploring small quiet roads was a delight which typically included stunning views. all your needs were taken care of as a van follows you around with your gear, plenty of food and drink as well as the usual cycling tools. we also go to visit temples, experience paper making and even made soba noodles. the accommodation was a mix of traditional japanese as well as more international-style hotels all of which were very clean and pleasant to sleep in. the food was japanese and delicious although the breakfasts became a little monotonous. it would have been nice to have cereal and a good cup of coffee or two occasionally. our guides were fantastic and lots of fun. nothing was too much trouble for them and they were constantly making sure the bikes were clean and ready for use. i brought my own bike and they even cleaned this for me - how good is that i would highly recommend this tour and would happily sign up for another grasshopper trip in the future., shikoku waratah’s tour september/october 2022 a great tour organised once again through adam - my sixth with adamshikoku is a wonderful place to cycle - spectacular scenery, mainly quiet “car free” roads. however there were some long hills- the great scenery. and the food was fantastic. the local team - led by norman (an american who lives in japan - fluent japanese), reiko his wife and the expert mechanic and dale were the best team i’ve had anywhere. nothing was too much trouble everything just “happened” we had a great group of riders - all of us only knowing an half or less of the other riders; but the group just « clicked »., this was my third time with grasshopper and i cannot recommend them enough - every member of the team - from those helping with bookings to the exceptionally knowledgeable and passionate guides, to partners (accommodation, restaurants) is amazing. if you want a memory that's personalised and special, grasshopper adventures is the right team to deliver it., wow, what an amazing experience sri lanka is a special place and experiencing it from a bicycle was just awesome., booking a trip with grasshopper means you can be sure you're going to get passionate knowledgeable guides, great food, caring attention, comfortable accommodation and a trip that will provide wonderful memories you will share over and over again. you'll also meet friendly, interesting people, some of whom will become friends for life., see more reviews >>  , come and experience, grasshopper style.

Asia cycling tours

Group on a cycling tour in Bali

Classic Intrepid…on two wheels. That’s an Asia cycling trip.

Japan’s silent bamboo forests, a highland tea plantation in Sri Lanka , sleepy Vietnamese fishing villages and crumbling hill forts on the road to Pushkar – it’s fair to say our Asia cycling trips are a long way from your typical Spin class. The beauty of these cycling trips is that they get you (literally) off the beaten path, away from the major tourist traps, and onto the road less traveled. There are village homestays, sizzling street food crawls, historic temples and postcard-worthy beaches, with some jaw-dropping rides in between. Our cycling leaders are all lycra-clad locals – so you know you’re getting an expert cyclist, plus the lowdown on the best Pad Thai in Bangkok or Kyoto’s coolest karaoke bar.

Frequently asked questions

Can i create my own cycling trip in asia.

There aren't many places Intrepid hasn't been, so even if you've got a destination in mind that isn't on our list of Cycling tours in Asia, our  Tailor-Made team  is here to help. We'll use our 30 years of experience and regional specialists to help you create your perfect cycling adventure.

When is the best time to cycle in Asia?

Asking the best time to cycle in Asia is a little like the old 'How long is a piece of string' conundrum: it really depends on where you want to go. For Vietnam or Thailand, you really want to get in before the monsoon hits, but also after the summer tourist swarms have departed – April and May are a good bet, the weather and the riding should both be quite pleasant.

If you're cycling in Japan, the winter months (December to February) are usually out, but springtime cherry blossoms in April or May will make a stunning backdrop.

The southern coast of Sri Lanka can be quite pleasant in December and January, but March is a lovely shoulder month if you'd like to dodge the summer crowds.

What sort of safety precautions do you take?

We run risk assessments on each and every one of our cycling trips to make sure they’re up to scratch and your cycling leaders have personally ridden every inch of the itinerary in advance. We’ve assessed the road conditions, the level of traffic and any potential blackspots.

Our leaders are trained in cycling health and safety, as well as basic first aid, and we usually have a vehicle following us if an evacuation ever becomes necessary. We’ve also made sure our cycling tours depart during the milder months when the weather isn’t too hot or too cold, so the ride should be as pleasant (and safe) as possible.

How fit do I need to be to do a cycling tour?

All you need to enjoy our cycling trips is the ability to ride a bicycle and a passion for seeing a destination on two wheels. That’s about it.

While there are occasionally longer days on some itineraries, the vast majority of our cycling days are between 19-37 miles and are done at a leisurely pace with plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy the scenery or just take a break. Anyone with a reasonable level of fitness will get by with no trouble. Be sure to check the physical rating and description in the Essential Trip Information to make sure the trip suits your fitness level and skills.

Our cycling trips are done predominantly on sealed roads (with the odd unsealed section), but none of the trips require any specialist cycling skills. We’ve also researched extra riding routes in each of the destinations we visit, so if you want to stretch your legs a bit more, you can.

My partner is fitter than me, should I still book this trip?

To make our trips more accessible for cyclists of varying fitness levels and skills, most of our trips will have a support vehicle that follows the group. You can jump into the support vehicle any time you feel like taking a short (or long) break from riding. Many of our cycling trips also include the option to use an e-bike, an electric motor-assisted bike that’ll get you up any hill or allow you to zip along the flats with minimum effort.

Do I need to pack anything special?

Helmets are compulsory on our cycling tours, so you can either bring your own or (to save on luggage space) buy one at a local bike shop once you arrive in-country. We also recommend you bring your own water bottle/hydration pack and closed shoes. You may also wish to bring Cycling shorts and (if you ride regularly at home) your own saddle and pedals. Many of our clients who do not ride regularly find a gel seat cover helpful in making the ride more comfortable. For more info on packing, check out the What to Pack section of your Essential Trip Information.

Should I bring my own bike on a cycling trip?

To take the hassle out of preparing for your trip, we've included bike hire on all our dedicated cycling tours. Alternatively, you can bring your trusty bike from home. If you're bringing your own bike, make sure you let us know when booking so we can make sure your bike is appropriate for that particular tour. As always, check your Essential Trip Information.

Bringing your own bike  – If you are a dedicated cyclist or just want to take your bike on a holiday, you can usually bring it along for the ride. You’ll need to box it up for transport on the plane.

The easiest way to do this is to go to your local bike shop and ask if they will do it for you (a fee may apply). They often have boxes on hand from old stock and have the tools to remove the pedals and secure your handlebars.

Airline fees will also apply, so check with your airline about costs. It's worth remembering not all trips will be able to accommodate your own bike, so let us know what you're planning at the time of booking.

Hiring a bike  – The bikes we use are from proven brands, very well maintained, typically less than 3 years old (most are newer) and specifically chosen to suit the terrain you'll be cycling on the trip. They come in a full range of sizes from extra small to extra large and usually have front suspension, flat bars, and 27 gears.

The only thing you need to do is advise us of your height at the time of booking. We’ll handle the rest. If you'd like, you can always bring your own saddle (seat) or gel over-cover for comfort. If you want to use cleats, bring your pedals and shoes, too.

Asia Cycling Tours

Discover the best of asia by bike, or e-bike.

You don’t have to be a keen cyclist to enjoy a cycling trip in Asia. All that you need is reasonable fitness and a love for exploring the world under your own steam.

Asia is synonymous with cycling as a form of travel. The ability to absorb the landscapes from two wheels, explore the backroads that few travellers ever see. The flexibility to hop off your bike when you want to take a picture or to share a laugh or smile with the local people, all combine to ensure that a cycling trip in Asia is one of the most authentic ways to experience the region.

Vietnam is one of the most popular Asian cycling destinations on offer. However, the various islands of Japan , the rarely travelled rural village roads of India or Sri Lanka , while the close proximity of countries such as Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam allow for amazing cross border itineraries.

WHAT OUR ASIA CYCLING TRIPS INCLUDE

Our quality Asia cycling trips provide you with everything you will need from well maintained bikes, support vehicles, bike mechanics and comfortable accommodations to most meals.

NERVOUS ABOUT FITNESS: HIRE AN ELECTRIC-BIKE

If you're a little nervous about your fitness, ask us about hiring an electric bike on our many China, Vietnam and Japan cycling tours. See below for more details on our e-bike options.

MULTI-ACTIVITY ADVENTURES

If you prefer not to commit to a pure cycling trip, many of our active trips in Asia are multi-activity adventures, trips that combine cycling with walking, and even paddling.

OUR EXPERIENCE WITH CYCLING IN ASIA

In 1978, we were the first adventure travel company to offer cycling experiences in India and China. Later, in 19190, we operated the first ever Vietnam cycling trip. We have operated cycling trips in Myanmar, Mongolia, Sri Lanka and many other destinations within India.

POPULAR ASIA CYCLING DESTINATIONS

Wherever you choose to cycle in Asia you can be assured that it will be led by a passionate local guide who wants to provide you with a memorable insight into their country. Check out some of the most popular cycling destinations in Asia below.

Colourful Cycling Holidays in Asia

Relaxed guided bicycle tours throughout south east asia, china & mongolia.

Painted Roads specialises in relaxed, fun, small group guided bicycle tours in a variety of destinations in South-East Asia, China, and Mongolia. As well as sharing with you our love of Thailand, Vietnam and Laos we also have an in-depth knowledge of some less-well known cycling holiday destinations so we hope you will also join us on one of our unforgettable cycle tours of Yunnan, Guizhou and Guanxi in China, Taiwan, Sri-Lanka, or the wonderful open spaces of Mongolia.

All of our cycling holidays feature western tour leaders and local guides. Our philosophy is based around offering an intimate exploration by bicycle of personally crafted tours through stunning rural locales in destinations around Asia.  Our  tours include comfortable accommodation, delicious local cuisine, a support vehicle and minimal transfers. We want your biking holiday with us to be a truly memorable experience for all the right reasons so we place as much emphasis on post-cycling relaxation, convivial company, and an apres-ride beer in a warm Asian sunset as the biking itself.

A superb tour through a fascinating region, brilliantly led by David and Phong. Both clearly love what they do and this translates into an exceptional level of service. The tour itself is full of surprises, diverse ethnic villages, the awesome rocky plateau and the beauty of the rice terraces. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and would recommend it to anyone who thinks they have “done” South East Asia. Chris on Northeast Vietnam

Cambodia Gravel Roads

Featured Bicycle Tour: Cambodia Gravel Roads

With a predominantly agricultural population, and an economy still faltering following a tragic recent history, Cambodia’s road infrastructure remains predominantly unsealed and rural. Whilst this may not be an ideal situation for many people, foreign and Khmer alike, for those amongst us who like to explore a country on traffic-free gravel roads, Cambodia offers an increasingly rare opportunity. Cambodia’s relatively diminutive size also means that, despite being able to explore the land and meet the people far from the tourist hordes, we are never far from a town boasting accommodation usually exceeding the comfort one may expect of a nation lacking in the material luxury of the West. And as we cycle through the beautiful flatlands of Kampuchea, meeting Khmer people, it is the cheery nature, ever-present smiles, waves, and shouted greetings that will likely leave an even more profound impression that the dramatic Angkorian era architecture. It is, however, this architecture that is, with good reason, Cambodia’s number one tourist draw and is the starting point of our adventure. And as if all of this is not enough, the French colonial legacy of fine dining and drinking, along with the local cuisine, make Cambodia perhaps the best nation in the region for hungry cyclists.

Feedback on our Asian Cycle Touring Holidays

Some things our clients have said...

I would not have brought my wife and sister along on a trip like this if I did not have the confidence and trust in David’s ability as a leader and a person who understands human nature and the psychological needs of the people in his care. I was not disappointed and he proved once again to be the competent leader I got to know on my Tibet/Nepal trip three years ago. I could highly recommend this team to anybody thinking of doing a cycle trip in any remote region of Asia. Ollie Hughes on Vietnam - Northeast
Apprehensive beforehand, yes. Sated afterwards, a very big YES. A truly fantastic two weeks cycling on the tracks, paths and byroads of rural & small town Thailand away from my fellow Farang and the tourist trail. A variety of surfaces, all very much manageable, other than the odd vertical wal Colm Flaherty on Thailand Gravel: South to North
he tour was everything the brochure said, possibly even better. The tour leader and his assistant were always available for any assistance, giving answers to any queries one might have. The support vehicles and drivers were also very helpful, nothing was a trouble. Would definitely recommend this tour Angela Rayner on Thailand Bespoke. QQ23/2

What people love about Bicycle Tours in South East Asia

Do it! Without any hesitation! First of all, the trip was amazing and I wouldn’t have missed it for the world! Cycle guides and drivers were excellent, speaking good English and ensuring that I had a close-up view of somewhere so different from home. The landscapes, culture, people and experiences along the way were unforgettable and I would certainly embark on a similar adventure if the opportunity came along. I would also travel with Bravo again. As you’ll see below, there were a few wrinkles in their handling of the trip but they were anxious to make amends and I would hope that they take my comments on board and use them to improve the experience for future customers. My tour was probably rather unusual as I was the only person who signed up for the selected dates. I was expecting to be part of a small group and I’m really grateful that Bravo went ahead with the tour, rather than cancelling. It was a tremendous experience! That being said, I've given less than a perfect five-star rating as there were a number of minor mishaps and uncertainties which could so easily have been avoided and would have made a huge difference to me. It’s quite possible that some of these were related to my solo status and may not have happened with a larger group, but on the whole I would recommend that Bravo pay a little more attention to the customer experience, being more proactive and publishing a more detailed itinerary in advance, particularly for transport and hotel arrangements. Once I discovered that they generally responded quickly to questions via WhatsApp, that became my standard means of communication and most arrangements went smoothly, though occasionally I had to nag a little before receiving answers. Hotel bookings at either end of my travel and en route seemed to be one of the biggest problems, with a few hiccups in reservations. For example, I had pre-booked two extra nights in the Ho Chi Minh City hotel at the end of my trip in addition to the two nights included in the tour. Apparently Bravo did’t finalize the reservation for the included nights with the hotel until moments before my arrival, meaning that I had to change rooms after the first night. I then found that they hadn’t booked my additional nights at all, leading to another room change when the error was discovered. That seemed messy and unnecessary, but it wasn’t so painful as to spoil the trip.
It was a great experience to discover Vietnam via bike. Leo and Dang were really kind. Our guide Leo provided a lot of background information and adopted stops and breaks according to our needs. The bikes were good and everything worked out very well. The local food was delicious. They always found a vegetarian dish as well. Be aware that dinner is only included on 2 days. But since it is not too expensive to find something and it is also nice to the discover the surrounding of the hotel, it was ok. The hotels were really nice and above standard. The tour was not too exhausting. We extended the distance on the last day. Looking back we should have done this on the other days as well, to reduce the bus transfer times.
Bicycle tour with intrepid was wonderful

10 of the Best Cycling Holiday Routes in Asia

10 of the Best Cycling Holiday Routes in Asia

Seeing a country by bike is one of the most rewarding, connected, tactile and thrilling ways of getting to know a new destination. Cycling to be green, to get fit or just for a new challenge in life, combining sport and travel could be a completely life changing experience. And in the fascinating continent of Asia , with its exotic landscapes and great variety of cultures, this is a truly wonderful way of exploring.

Whether you’re a pro rider or a cycling novice, travelling by bike can be done at your own pace and there are no rules about how many times you stop along the way. There are countless trails to suit different riding levels, but here are our top 10 cycling holiday routes  in Asia …

1). Silk Road

The famous Silk Road is made up of a network of trade routes which were established during the Chinese Han dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD) when silk traders travelled to and from different parts of Asia. The routes connect East and West Asia, even extending to parts of Europe, and was used by many traders, monks and soldiers in the past. Today, these ancient routes have become popular with travellers wanting to trek or cycle. If you’re looking for both a physical and mental challenge, we would recommend cycling the historic Silk Road.

There are three main routes of the Silk Road in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region: the northern route which covers the Tianshan Mountains, Hami, Urumqi and Yining; the central route which takes you westward to the southern foot of the Tianshan Mountains, passing through Ruoqiang, Turpan , Korla, Kuqa, Aksu and Kashgar ; and the southern route which takes you around the Kunlun Mountains, Hetian, Yechang, Shache and Kashgar . All three routes offer the most wonderful views of China ’s untouched countryside.

2). Qinghai Lake

The route around the vast Qinghai Lake in  China  will take 4 to 7 days of cycling. The total distance is over 220 miles and runs clockwise from Heimahe Town, finishing at Huangyuan County. The beautiful alkaline lake, which is said to change colour depending on season or time of day, is located in the culturally Tibetan area of China and has been a sacred lake to the Tibetan people for many centuries.

In terms of difficulty, at a steady and comfortable pace this route can be completed with ease. Due to the Qinghai Lake International Cycling Race, which has taken place every July since 2002, the roads are well maintained and very easy to ride on. The asphalt road makes an excellent smooth surface, so you won’t be up against rough terrain.

For the best weather and the clearest views of the peaceful lake, visit during summer. The best months for cycling are July and August , but remember to travel with layers as the temperatures can drop dramatically in the evenings.

3). Angkor Wat

Biking around the Angkor Wat temple complex is one of the best ways of exploring the lesser known wonders of this incredible archaeological site. Angkor, set in the northern Siem Reap province of  Cambodia  is one of the most important sites of historical significance, one which also carries a painful past, and it spreads across almost 250 square miles of land. The most famous temples include Angkor Wat, Bayon Temple, Ta Prohm Wat (which featured in the Tomb Raider movie with Angelina Jolie) and the Preah Khan Temple. But there are also some lesser known temples such as Baksei Chamkrong, Banteay Srei, Preah Ko and the 10th century East Mebon structure, which are all really worth exploring and can be easily reached on bike.

If you’re not planning on taking your own bike, you can rent a bicycle from the old market area in Siem Reap for just a few dollars a day. But remember, prices are often not fixed so be sure to haggle.

4) Mekong River

The spectacular Mekong River is as much a gem of Cambodia as its temples; it is the 12th longest river in the world (and 7th longest in Asia ) and stretches over 2,700 miles through China , Myanmar (Burma) , Laos , Thailand , Cambodia and Vietnam .

If you’re cycling along the 50 mile stretch of river in Cambodia , you will be able to find bicycle rentals such as CRD Tours (which is run by the Cambodian Rural Development Charity). However, you’ll be hard pressed to find sufficient cycling equipment and safety gear – so make sure you bring these with you or source them elsewhere.

The best time to cycle the Mekong River is in January and February when temperatures are comfortable and dry. If you want to avoid the crowds, the best time to ride is in September or October but this is typically the rainy season so be sure to bring lightweight waterproofs.

5). Himalayas

The small landlocked country of  Bhutan , nestled in the eastern foothills of the Himalayas, is packed with mind-blowing scenery and unspoiled wildlife. Although small in size, when it comes to natural sights and dramatic mountain views, the Bhutan certainly doesn’t disappoint. Still reasonably undiscovered by the clutches of tourism, a journey to the Himalayas in Bhutan will feel completely off the beaten path.

cycle tours asia

6). National Highway 1

Vietnam ’s National Highway 1, connecting the two major cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh (formerly Saigon), is the most popular cycling route in  Vietnam . Disconnected by warfare for many years, it has now become a famous trail for those who are looking for a physical challenge with great rewards. The road also acts as a symbol of unity for the Vietnamese people. However, the route is now crowded and runs through many built up areas. If you’re in search of some cultural and spiritual exploration, then we’d recommend the northern stretch of the Ho Chi Minh trail from Ngoc Lac to the Hai Van Pass in Da Nang .

This route was originally an elaborate web of jungle trails linking the country’s North and South during the Vietnam War. You will need a minimum of 10 days to complete the 500 mile stretch of road, but we would definitely recommend allowing a few extra days giving you enough time to explore each stopover. There are also a few steep hill climbs so be sure to carry plenty of water.

7). East Coast Park

This cycle route is a city trail with a difference; combining the convenience of the city with the beauty of beach and coastal scenery, there’s no other bike route like it in the world. If you’re looking for a gruelling life challenge though, this isn’t for you. The relaxed family atmosphere of East Coast Park and the coastal road is designed for a leisurely, laissez-faire approach to cycling. So, if you’re a beginner and don’t want to tackle anything too challenging just yet, this is the perfect cycling route to ease you into some longer rides.

cycle tours asia

Ending at Changi Village, you will find a huge selection of food hawkers and food halls to satisfy your appetite. For that well-earned meal after your 4- 5-hour cycle tour, head to Changi Village Food Centre where there will be a fantastic choice of street food stalls.

8) Bangkok to Phuket

Bangkok and Phuket are must visit destinations in  Thailand , both with their own unique charm. Cycling from one to the other will take you around 10 days and covering around 523 miles of stunning coastline, there will be plenty of beach stopovers. For the perfect combination of bike and beach, make sure you allow yourself a couple of extra days to relax and wind down at some of the resorts dotted along the coast.

THAILAND - Orient Express view rice pickers

9). Serpentine Road and Jaipur

The Pink City of Jaipur is located in  North India  and has earned its name from its lime plastered buildings which fill the cityscape with a deep pink colour in bright daylight. Founded in 1727 by the Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh, Jaipur is one of the country’s distinctive ‘planned cities’, and today it stands out as a unique place with pristine streets built with the highest levels of orderliness. Overlooked by the Nag Tibba Mountain, Jaipur is a stunning city best captured on foot or by bicycle.

The winding Serpentine Road is a steady ascent into the mountains and from the top, you can catch the most amazing views of the city. Jaipur centre itself can also be explored on a biking tour; ride through the colourful bazaars and see the city’s major architectural sites including the Albert Hall Museum, the Water Palace, the Maharajah’s cenotaphs, and the beautiful Marble Carvers’ District.

Jaipur North India 3 (1)

10). Hiroshima's Shimanami Kaido

Shimanami Kaido – also called the Nishiseto Expressway – is one of the most impressive cycle routes in Japan and the world, but the beauty of this incredible toll road is that it can be completed in just a matter of hours. Just under 40 miles, this uncomplicated stretch of road connecting Honshu to the island of Shikoku makes for a smooth, easy ride; perfect for beginners, younger riders and families.

This route offers amazing coastal scenery and you will pass over the 6 islands of Mukaishima, Innoshima, Omishima, Hakatajima and Oshima before finishing up at the tranquil and laid-back Shikoku.

When renting bikes, there are two rental options available along the expressway. The first, and the most popular, has a large number of terminals across the cycle route and is around 500 Yen per day with a 1,000 Yen deposit per bike. The second, available with The Giant Store Imabari, costs between 4,000 and 7,000 Yen per day for high-tech bicycles and there are only 2 terminals across the whole route.

WHY CYCLE WITH CHINA BY BIKE?

Pioneers in China

During the past 20 years, CHINA BY BIKE has explored more of China’s roads than any other cycling tour operator – we have organised tours through Tibet and the China’s North West along the old silk roads, along the Great Wall in the hills north of Beijing, in the fertile coastal provinces Fujian and Guangxi, we crossed central China’s Qinling mountain range, cycled along the Yangzi and discovered almost every corner of beautiful Yunnan.

"Bangkok - Phuket Feb 2020"

Wow what a tour! The guys were just great - Lucien and his team are focused, professional, rider-centric and very friendly. Their top guide Tik is equal parts historian, comedian, guide, blocker, cook --- and maybe he has more tricks up his sleeve? VERY knowledgeable and a pleasure to be around. The drivers were courteous, helpful, concerned... very nice experience. Anyway - just wanted to follow up and let you know that we give Thailand Cycle Tours a 9+ out of 10 for doing a fantastic job with routes, locations, resorts, support, service -- and -- maybe most importantly - food! (every time)

FLORENCE, Italy : Biniam Girmay is the first Black African rider to win a stage in a grand tour and starting on Saturday, the Eritrean will be looking to prevail again at the biggest cycling event of all, the Tour de France.

The 24-year-old won in a bunch sprint at the 2022 Giro d'Italia and quickly turned his sight towards becoming the first Black African to win on the Tour too, but on his first attempt last year he found the level was higher than at any other race.

"Last year I was really nervous before the start. It's the biggest race in the world and to be part of that made me really nervous, and I panicked from the start to the end of the Tour," Girmay told Reuters on Friday ahead of his second Tour.

"It's a different race, you need to prepare well mentally, and I think this year will be different."

Girmay admitted that last year, he was caught by surprise by the intensity of the Tour de France.

"The first thing I learned is that it's a different atmosphere than other races, even Monument (classics) or the Giro," he explained.

"The level of the riders especially in sprint stages, it's crazy. (On the Giro) the peloton starts to gear up for the sprint 10km (from the finish) but on the Tour it starts 55, 60 km (from the line).

"The best sprinters in the world are here and that makes the race harder and the (general classification) guys need to be well-positioned 10 km from the finish. I was totally nervous before the Tour and wasted a lot of energy."

Having learned from that experience, Girmay now has high ambitions with his Intermarche-Wanty team.

"I will be more relaxed," he said, despite the added pressure of having already won on a grand tour.

"The target is just to win a stage - me or my team have never won a stage on the Tour. Becoming the first Black African to win on a grand tour changed things, and sometimes it puts pressure on me. I think second is not enough anymore."

Girmay will then focus on the Paris 2024 Olympics, where he will wrap up the "biggest month of (his) career" with the road race on Aug. 3.

The Tour de France starts in Florence on Saturday.
