An enchanted winter safari is now open in Hemmingford

Parc Safari inaugurated its festive new installation, Féerie, a wonderland of lights, on November 26 in Hemmingford.

There are four themed lands to discover, including “Magica,” which features a festive holiday display, while “Foresta” highlights giant-sized North American fauna such as bears, buffalo, foxes, and deer. “Arctica” welcomes visitors to a frozen world complete with polar bears and penguins, while “Africa” shines with sparkling lions, zebras, and giraffes.

Child stand in a field in front of a giant structure with golden coloured Christmas lights of a buffulo and other animals in the background.

The event took place in the presence of representatives from the federal and provincial governments, including Chateauguay-Lacolle MP Brenda Shanahan and Huntingdon MNA Carole Mallette, as well as the prefect of the MRC des Jardins-de-Napierville, Yves Boyer, and several municipal councillors. Both Mallette and Shanahan noted how significant funding, provided by various government programs, was instrumental in initiating Féerie.

More than 300,000 lights were used for the project, which includes 85 two- and three-dimensional illuminated structures created by the Joliette-based company, Leblanc Illuminations Canada. The giant elements are located along a pathway that stretches over a kilometre and a half through the park.

Parc Safari president Jean-Pierre Ranger says the sturdy structures were designed to last for several seasons, and the park plans to add to the displays over the years.

“We did not set out to do what Illumi does,” he explains, referring to the annual Laval-based illuminated production by Cavalia. Instead, Ranger describes Féerie as a starting point for a new phase of recreational development at Parc Safari. He says the hope is that by next year, real animals that are able to remain outdoors throughout the winter will be included in the activities. Other goals for the 2023-24 season include the creation of a skating and tube sliding area as well as nature trails through wooded areas and much more. A campground and new parking area are also planned, now that the Commission de Protection du Territoire Agricole (CPTAQ) has authorized the use of an additional 52 hectares of land owned by the park.

During the run up to Christmas, the Place D’Afrique plaza will be transformed into a festive market where producers and artisans from the Montérégie region will be selling locally made products on December 16 to 18 and again on December 23 and 24. Children will also be able to chat with Santa Claus and the Filouminous mascots and enjoy the new Discovery Pavillion, which features displays of rocks, minerals, and fossils that trace the evolution of life on Earth. Féerie will be open each weekend, Friday to Sunday from 4 p.m., until March 12.

It’s a major attraction in Quebec!

The Car Tour

The particularity of the Omega Park is that it must be visited by car. Yes, you just have to drive the 15 km of way-marked roads in the comfort of your car!

Entrance-of-the-Park

At the entrance of the Park

To make the experience more enjoyable, you can bait the deers with carrots. Get close to them and they will approach you. Roll down your windows all the way and they’ll stick their snouts into your car to satisfy their voracious appetite for carrots.

Warning : don’t roll down your entire window or you’ll be covered in dripping drool!

Tip : Plan on several kilos/pounds of carrots. You’ll be surprised how quickly they’ll disappear, especially when you realize that you’ve used up half of them in the first 5 minutes after you enter the park.

Forgot your bags of carrots at home? No stress, you can buy some at the park.

Car-Tour

The car tour is one-way and takes about an hour and a half to complete. You can drive around the park as many times as you wish during the day.

But the Omega Park is not just a place to visit by car. It is also possible to car park to stretch your legs and make the fun last.

The Land of The Pioneers

Halfway along the journey, park your car and discover the Land of the Pioneers. In this area, the park offers a host of activities to entertain both young and old for a large part of the day.

Visit this area on foot and enjoy various activities, playgrounds and picnic tables.

Observe the grey wolves on the footbridge set up for this purpose. Learn more about them by asking your questions to the guide-interpreter.

Once again, you can get out of the car and appreciate the history of the 11 First Nations of Quebec, represented by a series of totem poles made by an Native American sculptor. The trail built around a lake filled with large trouts and turtles is simply magnificent.

Location of the Omega Park

The Omega Park is located in Montebello, a small and easily accessible town, 1.5 hours from Montreal and 45 minutes from Ottawa.

For several years now, we have been renewing our family experience at the Omega Park . Each year, the park’s offer is more and more attractive , particularly with accommodations featuring a panoramic view of a pack of grey wolves. Moreover, the animals are always well and healthy.

Generally speaking, the park shows signs of good management and we recommend it to you without hesitation!

What can you do in Montréal in winter?

parc safari winter

Here it is. The cold season is upon us Montréaler’s and we had the first snowfall to prove it. If you’re happy to see snow again but shudder at the thought of shivering in Québec’s notoriously frigid weather, don’t panic! Winter in Montréal comes with a full range of activities that will help you quickly forget your fears. Without further ado, here’s a list of things you can do to enjoy this time of year and make the most of the season.

Hit the city’s parks for some winter fun

With its many parks, Montréal is the perfect place to explore winter sports. Definitely one of my favourite things to do in the city. Whether you’re into skating, tobogganing, snowshoeing or cross-country skiing, you’ll have many options to choose from. And the best part is, you don’t have to pay for anything. All you need is your own equipment.

I highly recommend La Fontaine Park and Mount Royal Park . They both have slopes that are ideal for skiing and tobogganing, and lakes that freeze over, creating a winter wonderland for skaters to enjoy.

No skates? No problem. Just rent a pair at the Beaver Lake pavilion in Mount Royal Park.

Spend the day at Parc Omega

If you love animals, this outing has your name on it!

Parc Omega, a safari park about a 90-minute drive from Montréal, is home to various species of Canadian wildlife, including moose, caribou, wolves, bison, and bears, that you can observe from the comfort of your car.

If you’d rather explore the park on foot, you can hike the trails, visit a farm, watch the wolves or walk the rope bridges. The park also pays tribute to the Indigenous Peoples who once lived on the land.

Spending a day at Parc Omega is like going back in time immersed in nature. Guaranteed!

Check out the Christmas markets

Montréal becomes truly magical during the holiday season. And it’s no wonder! The city has no fewer than three Christmas markets and it’s all decked in lights and festive decorations that will surely get you in the holiday spirit.

A Christmas market is the place to go if you want to pick up gifts for your loved ones or a souvenir for yourself. You can also stroll between the little huts and admire the work of local artisans. You’ll love it—trust me.

So, when you get the chance, head over to the Great Christmas Market at the Quartier des Spectacles , to the Jean-Talon Christmas Market or to the Montréal Christmas Village at Atwater Market .

parc safari winter

Go to an art exhibition

If you’d rather stay indoors and art is your thing, why not visit some of Montréal’s many art exhibitions?

My favourite venues are OASIS immersion and the PHI Centre .

  • OASIS immersion , located at the Palais des Congrès de Montréal, is Canada’s largest indoor immersive destination. The programming changes every six months, so you can come back and enjoy the sensory experience over and over again. The exhibition currently on display, VAN GOGH – Distorsion, is definitely worth seeing! Since the shows are extremely popular, make sure you buy your tickets in advance so you don’t miss out.
  • For more exhibitions that explore the elements of light and sound, pop into the PHI Centre . Visit their website to check out the many activities and exhibitions the Centre has to offer.

Spend an afternoon at Céramic Café

Don’t feel like getting out in the cold? Love arts and crafts? Then I suggest spending an afternoon at Céramic Café. It’s a café where you can paint ceramics (like cups, plates, bowls and vases) while enjoying a hot drink and a snack.

A smart way to stay out of the cold and let your creativity flow!

parc safari winter

Contrary to what people usually imagine before moving to Montréal, Québec winters are really not that bad. Quite the opposite, in fact. The snowy season is a magical time and a great opportunity to try lots of different activities and create lasting memories. You just have to learn to make the most of it.

4 Best Parks To Visit In Montreal This Winter

Top Parks To Visit on the Island of Montreal This Winter

View of Montreal Skyline from Park Mont-Royal

Ah, Montreal parks. The perfect setting for people watching, romantic strolls, picnics with friends, quirky activities like slack-lining, quidditch, extreme frisbee or practicing cartwheels because, why not? At least they’re great for all that (and more) in the summer and fall. But, what about winter?

Don’t despair, folks. The parks stay open year round, and there’s plenty to do at Montreal’s parks throughout the long winter months!

Here are 4 of the best parks in Montreal to visit in winter:

1. parc la fontaine.

Located in le Plateau, Parc la Fontaine is bordered by Sherbrooke, Avenue du Parc La-Fontaine (obvs), Rachel and Papineau. It’s a great park for a stroll, a picnic, chilling by the duck pond or kicking back with a good book. In the winter, it transforms into a snowy wonderland, surrounded by some of the city’s trendiest hotspots.

Why it’s awesome for winter:

The skating ! There’s something truly romantic about this park, so while you can definitely take the family skating, or go for a pick up hockey game, it’s a really special spot for an evening skate with your special someone. Don’t have skates? No worries! You can rent skates at the onsite chalet. You can also get your own skates sharpened there if you quite literally had to dust yours off. There’s also a little restaurant onsite to grab a snack or a hot drink, but…

Kick it up a notch:

In case you weren’t aware, you can drink alcohol in Montreal’s public parks! The catch is, you have to be consuming a meal if you’re drinking. Ah, but there’s another catch! There’s really no definition of what constitutes a meal. So, if you were to bring a few yummy pastries or holiday baking alongside your thermos of spiked hot chocolate or egg nog, you’re probably good to go! If that isn’t the perfect budget-friendly, yet romance-packed date night, we don’t know what is!

More awesomeness:

Though the park is known more for its beautiful skating rink in the winter, you can also use the cross-country skiing or snowshoeing trails throughout the winter. Even just a snowy stroll through the park can be pretty special.

Park la fountaine in downtown montreal

2. Parc Mont Royal

Montreal's lake - Beaver lake in the park of mont royal

Snow tubing ! There are a few spots on the mountain where you can bring your own sled and coast down the hill, but the groomed tubing tracks overlooking Beaver Lake are hands down some of the most fun you can have in Montreal during the winter!

You rent a tube onsite (prices for this year have not yet been announced, but have always been extremely affordable in the past) and if you bring your own lock, you can make use of one of the onsite lockers so you can whoosh down the hill at top speed without a care in the world!

This is obviously an awesome activity for kids, but if you’re an adult or semi-adult and feeling nostalgic for the days when snow felt thrilling and magical, trust us… there is no joy quite like tubing! So slap on your snow pants and get ready to yeehaw!

Scrap the office Christmas party this year and take the whole team out to the hills for a day of totally unprofessional fun! When was the last time you fell into a fit of giggles with your coworkers? Forget the team building exercises. Nothing bonds a team together like tubing!

Like we said, this is a BIG park. Aside from tubing, there’s also snowshoeing, cross country skiing, bird watching, skating, hiking and more!

3. L’Escapade in Rigaud

So this one’s actually outside the city and – bit of a bummer – not accessible by public transportation. It’s about a 45 minute drive away in the town of Rigaud, but it makes our list because…

The cross country skiing ! L’escapade is a linear park. Yes, that is a boring description, but what it means is that the park is a lot longer than it is wide. Because of that, it’s the perfect layout for trails! There are about 27 kms of groomed ski trails in gorgeous l’Escapade park. The 27 kms are divided into five distinct trails, rated from easy to difficult. Given the length of the trails, you can really make a full day of it.

Combine your ski day with a little history! Rigaud is a town packed with historic sites and rich in quebecois culture. Sure, there’s plenty of history in Montreal as well, but this is a little different and immersing yourself in the roots of Quebec culture is an experience every Montrealer should have. So, spend a morning skiing the trails, then stop for lunch before visiting one (or more) of the many stops along the heritage and cultural circuit .

If you’ve never tried snowshoeing, this might be the perfect opportunity as you can rent the equipment onsite. There are also walking trails open year round, and while dogs are not allowed on the ski trails, they are more than welcome to join you for some furry fun on the walking and snowshoeing trails.

4. Parc Jean-Drapeau

This is probably the most action-packed park the city has to offer. Year round, there are all kinds of events and activities happening at Parc JD. Located on Île Sainte Hélène, Parc Jean-Drapeau is surprisingly easy to get to with plenty of parking and access via the metro’s yellow line. In the summer, you can even take a river shuttle from the Old Port. But in winter…

Fȇte des neiges ! For the 37th year in a row, this event will be bringing the joy of winter to Montrealers for four weekends in a row. This year’s festival will include the ice boat (a giant pirate ship made of ice), snow tubing, a refrigerated skating trail, boot hockey games to join, a human foosball game, an “alpine adventure” activity organized by Cirque Éloize acrobats and much more. There’s even a mini-hill and equipment for kids to take their first shot at downhill skiing or snowboarding!

This is definitely a family friendly festival, with plenty of activities for kids of all ages, but it is by no means exclusively for kids and families. The ice slides are fun for everyone, there are plenty of activities to join in, and last year’s festival had amazing food trucks to sample some of the best cuisine in the city. This year’s food truck lineup is gearing up to be just as delicious.

Access to just the festival is free, but some activities require a ticket. Opt for the ridiculously affordable pass and you get unlimited access to all activities for ALL 4 WEEKENDS of the festival! Skate one day, go tubing the next, eat yourself silly at the food trucks, take a snowshoeing lesson, join a game of boot hockey, then do it all again!

If you opt for the festival pass, you also get free admission the Stewart Museum , which has great exhibits and programming for all ages, as well as 25% off admission to the Biosphere. If you’re tired of hearing “I’m bored” from your kids… or partner… or friends… there’s four straight weekends packed with activities!
