Chrysler Grand Voyager (2008-2015) review

The boxy chrysler grand voyager is a practical alternative to mainstream mpvs, and it majors on long-distance comfort.

  • Great seating system, huge load area, refinement
  • Poor economy, vague handling, dismal safety ratings

The Chrysler Grand Voyager has made big improvements over its predecessors, but the practical MPV still falls some way behind European alternatives like the Ford Galaxy and SEAT Alhambra . It's a capable motorway cruiser, but the Grand Voyager rolls and wallows on a twisty road, and the 2.8-litre diesel is unacceptably thirsty when compared to the likes of the Volkswagen Sharan . However, the superbly practical seating set-up and colossal load area make the otherwise underwhelming Chrysler an incredibly practical family car. One major sticking point is the Grand Voyager's price, as the basic model costs as much as the top-of-the range Galaxy.

Engines, performance and drive

The Chrysler Grand Voyager makes for a great long-distance cruiser. Motorway refinement is great, and the big diesel engine means performance isn't blunted when you're carrying six passengers. However, take the Chrysler to something a little twistier and the Grand Voyager’s bulk becomes all too apparent. Stacked against a Ford Galaxy, the big Chrysler rolls unacceptably in the corners and doesn’t come close in terms of driving dynamics.

MPG, CO2 and Running Costs

Alongside European rivals like the Volkswagen Sharan and SEAT Alhambra, the Grand Voyager is at an automatic disadvantage due to its sheer bulk. The Chrysler is over 500kg heavier than the SEAT, and economy suffers as a result. Managing just 33.6mpg on the combined cycle, both the SEAT and VW are capable of closer to 50mpg. Emissions are equally awful, with the Chrysler churning out 222g/km of CO2. The Grand Voyager’s saving grace is its generous equipment, with even base-spec cars getting three-zone climate control and electric windows as standard.

Interior, design and technology

If you like a car that looks like a van, then the Chrysler Grand Voyager should be top of your list. It has a typical, boxy, American design, making it an imposing thing to look at. The front-end is characteristically Chrysler, with flashes of chrome everywhere. Inside, the cabin is a big improvement on the model it replaces, but some of the plastics still feel cheap and the design is dull.

Practicality, comfort and boot space

Usability is the Chrysler Grand Voyager’s trump card. The excellent Stow ‘n Go seating system impresses, with all five rear seats folding simply and quickly into the floor – revealing a gigantic 3,296-litres of boot space. Compare this to the SEAT Alhambra, and the Spanish MPV falls nearly 1,000 litres short of the colossal Chrysler. The second row of seats rotate through 180 degrees, which gives a usable office space – making this the MPV of choice for chauffeurs.

Reliability and Safety

Chrysler doesn’t feature in our Driver Power Survey, but their reliability record does appear slightly patchy. The Grand Voyager is also a poor performer in the Euro NCAP crash tests – scoring a dismal two stars for occupant safety. The Ford Galaxy and SEAT Alhambra both manage a full five stars in the same tests. However, the Chrysler does get a host of airbags, and stability control is standard across the range.

Is this an all-new model then?

Yes. Chrysler has lengthened the wheelbase and claims to have made at least 30 major improvements to its popular people carrier. The most important of these is a comfier, more supple ride and better refinement. The newly independent firm has also worked hard at making the Grand Voyager even more family-friendly. The highlight of this is the all-new, and unique-to-Chrysler, Swivel ’n Go system.

Sounds a bit rude

Yes the insulting implications seem to have been lost on the Americans who dreamt it up. Swivel ’n Go is actually their seating system which is a development of Stow ’n Go. Now as well as folding into the floor, the two middle seats turn through 180 degrees so passengers in the second row can face the back. The seatbelts have been integrated into the chairs so you can travel facing backwards too. And there’s also a nifty table that screws into the floor between the second and third rows.

Any other goodies?

All five rear seats collapse into the floor and there’s an option that lets the rear row do it at the touch of a button. It means you can transform it from seven-seater to van in 30 seconds. There’s also a clever in-car entertainment system as a £1750 option. This has two screens and three inputs so the second row of passengers can watch one thing on one screen, the third row can enjoy something different and other passengers can listen to the sound system. Perfect for keeping bickering kids at bay.

OK, apart from that what sort of job has Chrysler done inside?

Although bosses claim they’ve made big improvements to the interior it’s pretty much business as usual for an American car. The dash looks decent, if a touch old-fashioned, making the perceived quality fine, but no better. Touch the plastics and they’re horribly scratchy. And some of it – such as the feeble, snatchy way the glove box shuts - feels very flimsy. The driving position is also poor. Along with the front seat passenger, taller occupants won’t be able to sit far back enough to feel truly comfortable.

What’s it like on the road then?

For passengers it’s fine. The ride is supple but engineers have beefed up the roll bars and claim there’s less body roll, although it’s still very present if you're the driver. The only wind noise you get is from around the mirrors and road noise has been suppressed impressively. They haven’t been quite so effective at silencing the engine. The firm reckons 95 percent of UK sales will be the 2.8-litre turbodiesel and it’s had its performance upped. But the increase in weight cancels that out and the car labours noisily up gradients. Pack the earplugs.

How about if you’re behind the wheel?

Chances are you won’t be buying a large MPV and expecting it to handle like a sportscar, which is just as well because it doesn’t. In fact it feels like a big cumbersome beast and although the steering feels decently weighted it has such a poor relationship with the front wheels you find yourself having to make corrections mid bend in order to maintain your desired trajectory. The whole experience makes you feel like you’re hauling a lot of weight around...

There’s no doubting that the Grand Voyager is well equipped. Even without Swivel ’n Go as a £750 option and the in-car DVD, there are still plenty of family friendly features. Curtain airbags and ESP are standard as are Stow ’n Go seats. While you can argue that the driving experience isn’t vital for a motor such as this, interior quality is and the Grand Voyager still lags behind European rivals when it comes to cabin build. It’s an improvement on the outgoing car but you sense the firm could have done much more.

Chrysler voyager and grand voyager mk4 review (2001-2008), top notch mpv, but reliability can be a major issue.

chrysler grand voyager 2008

What is the Chrysler Voyager?

The fourth-generation Chrysler Voyager and Grand Voyager were among the best looking and most capacious people-carriers on the market when they were new. They were also among the most capable as they were comfy, well-appointed and seriously user-friendly. But being US-built Chryslers they were also a bit lacking in the materials and build quality department, which is why you have to be wary when buying a used example – especially as even the newest cars are now getting on.

chrysler grand voyager 2008

The difference between the Voyager and Grand Voyager is simple: the former is around a foot shorter than the latter, which means it has significantly less interior space. As a result, the only models worth looking at are the Grand editions; yes you’ll need a huge parking space but if you want to carry seven people, you might as well allow them to travel in comfort.

Search for and buy a used Chrysler Voyager

On paper the Grand Voyager had lots of rivals, but in reality there’s just the one – the box-on wheels Hyundai i800. Apart from this unsophisticated people mover the Chrysler was the only MPV that could seat seven and still have a decent sized boot; alternatives such as the Ford Galaxy, Renault Grand Espace and Citroen C8/Peugeot 807 offered no goods ‘n’ chattels space with all the seats filled. The Kia Sedona is worth a look, though being boxy, capacious and reliable. However, it feels rather downmarket, even in comparison with the Chrysler. Or you could look for a VW Transporter; the quality is excellent, but used values tend to be steep.

The fourth-generation Voyager and Grand Voyager made their debuts in February 2001. While the Voyager was offered with 2.4 or 3.3-litre petrol engines along with a 2.5-litre diesel, the Grand Voyager came with just the latter two powerplants. In April 2004 a facelift brought new headlights and more generous equipment levels while both models were also now available with a new 2.8-litre CRD diesel engine. The most useful addition came in April 2005 with the introduction of a Stow ‘n’ Go option, which allowed the seats to fold flat into the floor.

You should aim to buy a facelifted range-topping Limited or run-out Limited XS with the 2.8-litre CRD engine. Such cars are packed with kit and while that’s more to go wrong (and it probably will do so), you’ll have a few more buttons to play with while you’re waiting for the tow truck to arrive. Whatever you buy, make sure it’s got Stow & Go; it makes life a lot easier as without these you have to lift the chairs out individually. And unless you’re a gym worshipper you’ll struggle, because the chairs are seriously heavy.

When it was new the Grand Voyager was popular with celebrities thanks to its spaciousness, clean lines and the fitment of (in many cases) smart-looking privacy glass. While this fourth-generation model isn’t the best MPV to drive, it offers a huge amount of practicality and versatility for the money, and while running costs can be high, if you buy sensibly you can minimise expenditure. But investigate the cost of fixing even the most minor of faults before you buy; steep parts prices can bump up repair bills higher than you might think.

What to look out for when buying a used Chrysler Voyager

Chrysler doesn’t have a great record when it comes to reliability, thanks to under-engineering of some key components. Things like suspension bushes, track rod ends and wheelbearings can wear quickly, while the electrics aren’t very robust. Other items that go on the blink regularly include the heating and ventilation systems along with the electrically powered rear side doors. You also need to check that the components on the car’s underside aren’t rotten; the bodyshell doesn’t generally rust, but the bits that attach to its underside often do.

For such an old car, its recall record isn’t too lengthy; potential issues have been a power steering hose splitting, the handbrake failing and the windscreen wipers packing in, with later recalls for braking problems and incorrect deployment of airbags.

any renderings? sounds exciting

but technically this red complex is just one tower. the height is impressive though.

technically it is four towers with skybridges between towers.

chrysler grand voyager 2008

Sorry, but I only see one tower there.

the rendering seems to be old. the model shows a different version with one tower.

chrysler grand voyager 2008

Very nice project. IMO it's only one tower btw. The Moscow cluster will become gorgeous, maybe the most beautiful of Europe, we'll see. I think most of the concurention will come from Istanbul where Dubai is going to invest some money in skyscrapers.

Gah! I really like what I see. How many of the buildings rendered is built/uc?

chrysler grand voyager 2008

The tallest is the best, simple and amazing design. i cant wait to see that u/c

chrysler grand voyager 2008

I always thought it was one but understand more clearly now

So. Billboard says: Construction of complex of administrative buildings of executive and legislative powers of City of Moscow in the MIBC "Moscow-City" (preparation works) begin: october 2005 completion: march 2006 i have no clue what they mean under preparation, but as i said there is technics and building materials for building wall in ground. so may be it mean cleaning the plot and making wall in ground, which seems already begun. i doubt they will also dig such big pit until march.

this skyscraper ist simply WOW

chrysler grand voyager 2008

Damn!!, Maybe it isnt one of the best design..but the scale is truely impressive!

chrysler grand voyager 2008

amazing project, does this count as 4 single towers or one tower at 307m?

Then let's talk skyscrapers! All right then. Let's talk skyscrapers. I well known that skyscrapers are very uneconomically. It much cheaper to build low-rise, and you get much more space out of it. A great part of the space in skyscrapers are offen used for lift shafts and staircases. Then why are skyscrapers build? Think of The Chrysler building and The Empire State building. The reason they are so tall is because the they compete of wich one would be the tallest! Look at Taipai 101. Is it build because of lack of areal? No And what about Burj Dubai? Have the run out of construction sites? No They just wanna be the tallest! And that fine with me. As long as it isn't the taxpayers money that is used for the purpose.

chrysler grand voyager 2008

only some projects are so ^^^ But moscow need office area

how about other thousands of skyscrapers around the world. they don't claim to be tallest. those just skyscrapers. As for City Hall and City Duma. I repeat once again for you. It is much more better for organisation 4 skyscrapers than hundreds of lowrise buildings spreaded around big city.

Everything crazyevildude said above is true. Sprawl is a bad option. And many cities build large buildings to consolidate all of their departments into one building. It ends up being cheaper in the end usually for the city. So this is probably cheaper to build one building and sell off all the others than to maintain what is existing.
