Obtainment of Simple or Multiple Tourist Visa for foreign-born citizens

What does it consist in.

It is the granting of a Visa for foreign-born citizens who wish to visit Chile with recreational or the like purposes.

Citizens from countries maintaining an exemption of Tourist Visa regime with Chile are exempted.

Where can it be requested?

• At the Consulates of Chile overseas.
• At the Immigration Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, after processing the data from the applicant.

Who is it addressed to?

To tourists, that is to say, the foreign-born citizens entering the country for recreational, sport, health, study, business, family, religious or other similar purposes, with no intention of immigration, permanent residency or performing remunerated activities.

Requirements

• Valid Passport or identity document until the end of the stay.
• To accredit economic solvency allowing to travel and finance the stay.
• Invitation letter of a natural person or body corporate in Chile.
• Hotel reservations if not having a contact person in Chile.

Obtainment of a Subject to Contract Visa for foreign-born nationals

Issuing of a Subject to Work Contract Visa for foreign–born citizens who have been hired by a company with residency in Chile, has a maximum of two years. It also exists the Dependent Residence Subject to Contract Visa, granted to the relatives of the holder, with a similar extension, that does not allow to work. The cost of the procedure is based on reciprocity.

To foreign-born citizens who have been hired by a company located in Chile.

• Letter from the employer addressed to the Consul justifying the hiring.
• Work contract (notarized, legalized and translated, if applicable).
• Professional degree (if necessary).
• Background Checking.
• Medical Certificate.
• Valid Passport.
• 4 passport-sized photos.

Requirements demanded from the hiring company:

• Incorporation in Chile.
• Legal address in Chile.
• That the activity performed by the hired person is essential for the development of the country.

About the Work Contract

The contract must be drawn up pursuant to Chilean legal regulations and contain the following clauses:

• Obligation of the employer to fulfill the payment of the income tax in relation to the paid remuneration.
• Obligation of the employer of the payment of deduction to the contingency and health system of the worker in Chile or overseas.
• Obligation to pay return tickets at the end of the work contract for the person under contract and its family group.

Issuing of Resident Subject to Contract Visa.

Visas for artist who enter the country to work for less than 90 days

• Having a manager or artistic producer.
• Application for a Tourist Visa at the corresponding Chilean Consulate, when there is not a Tourist Visa exemption agreement.
• Accrediting itself as an artist.
• The agent or artistic producer must request a work permit before the Foreign Legalization Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, website: www.extranjería.gov.cl

Obtainment of a Temporary Residence Visa

Obtainment of a residence visa.

The obtainment of a Temporary Residence Visa for foreign-born citizens who travel with the purpose of settling down in Chile, due to having family bonds, interest in the country or whose residency is useful and favorable to Chile. This visa allows to work, to study and / or to perform commercial activities, within a maximum of one year. There is also a Dependent Temporary Residence Visa, which is granted to the holder's family and does not allow to work, and it has an extension of one year.

To foreign-born citizens, parents, bridegrooms and children of residents.

• Letter addressed to the Consul, pointing out the reasons for the settlement.
• Certificate of kinship, in the case of a relative.
• If the applicant travels to perform internship, must have the commitment of its parents or legal guardian for economic backing.

Issuing of a Temporary Resident Visa.

When the foreign-born citizen is an investor, it must submit the following:

• Investment project.
• Capital related to the investment.
• To accredit the origin of capital to be invested.
• To confirm the veracity of the investment in relation to the incorporation in Chile.
• The activity to be performed must be profitable.
• To point out the workforce and the remuneration to be paid to the workers.

Obtainment of a Student Resident Visa for foreign-born citizens.

It is granted to the foreign-born citizens who travel to Chile with the purpose of carrying out studies as a regular student at State academic institutions or private ones recognized by the State, for a maximum of a year, and in the case of scholarship holders for the length of the sponsorship.

• Certificate of Enrollment or Letter of Acceptance issued by a university or educational institution recognized by the State.
• To accredit before the Consul economic solvency that allows subsistence during the period of studies.

Special agreements concerning visas

'work and holiday' chile /australia.

Agreement signed between Chile and Australia that allows young Chilean and Australian students and professionals of a maximum of 31 years of age, to travel to the other country on holiday with the possibility of studying and working for a period not longer than a year.

For interested persons in Chile, to request a support letter from the Chilean government at the Immigration Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs a support letter to apply for the 'Work and Holiday Visa', having to submit an original and photocopy of :

• Valid passport (photocopy only of the page of identity).
• Birth Certificate.
• Sworn Statement of not having any dependant children before a Chilean Notary Public.
• Professional University Degree or from a higher technical institution recognized by the Ministry of Education, or a Certificate of the academic institution accrediting at least two years of study completed and approved.
• Basic knowledge of English.

'WORK AND HOLIDAY' CHILE / NEW ZEALAND

Agreement signed between Chile and New Zealand that allows young students and professionals from both countries of a maximum of 30 years of age, to travel to the other country on holiday with the possibility of studying and working for a period not longer than a year.

With its dazzling national parks, globally-renowned wineries, Andean ski resorts and top-class surf beaches, Chile is an attractive destination for travelers from around the world. Deciding you want to visit is the easy part; navigating the logistics of actually making that trip happen can be a tad trickier. Below is a useful guide to Chile’s entry requirements, including information on visa types, costs and all the details you’ll need to ensure a seamless journey in and out of the country.

Citizens of 95 countries do not need a visa in advance

Citizens of around 95 countries can enter Chile without the need to obtain a consular or electronic visa in advance. These include citizens of the United States, Japan, Canada, the UK, the European Union and Chile’s South American neighbors – all of whom receive a stamp allowing them to stay in the country for up to 90 days. Formerly, the citizens of many of these countries had to pay hefty “reciprocity fees” to enter Chile. These are no longer in place, with the final fee, for Australians, removed in 2020 (though Australians still need an e-visa to enter, which can be found here ).

Citizens of many other countries, particularly in Africa and Asia, will need to visit the closest embassy to apply for a tourist visa, which could last for a minimum of 30 days or a maximum of 90, depending on the nation. Citizens of all countries must ensure that their passport is valid for a minimum of 6 months from the date of arrival.

Everyone gets a Tarjeta de Turismo or Tourist Card when they arrive

 Upon entering the country, you will receive a slip of paper called the Tarjeta de Turismo (Tourist Card). Hold onto it for the duration of your stay as you’ll be required to present this to border officers when you depart. This tourist card is actually quite useful as you can use it to avoid the 19% room tax at hotels, which domestic tourists must pay. Most hotels won’t automatically deduct this, so be sure to show your passport and tourist card at check-in.

If you lose the tourist card, you can request a free copy at the website of the Policía de Investigaciones de Chile (PDI), at the nearest PDI office or at the Santiago airport (though you should allot at least 45 minutes extra at the airport to deal with this). Residents of visa-free countries can extend the tourist card for an additional 90 days by filling out a form online (in Spanish) and then paying a US$100 extension fee, but this requires a high level of Spanish comprehension and the patience to jump through some hoops. It’s often easier (and cheaper) to just hop across the Andes to Argentina and return a day later, at which time you’ll receive a new tourist card free of charge.

Working visas are available for citizens of Canada and Australia 

Citizens of 16 countries – including Canada, Ireland, Germany, Australia and New Zealand – can apply for Working Holiday Visas to extend their stay in Chile even longer. These visas are generally available to those between the ages of 18 and 30 (or up to 35 for Canadians) and allow foreigners to work and live in Chile for up to one year. Entrepreneurs should consider applying to the Start-Up Chile program, which arranges one-year work visas on top of generous monetary incentives in the tens of thousands of dollars. Others who want to stay longer can work with local language schools to arrange Sujeta a Contrato visas for teaching English in Chile.

All foreign person before arriving in to Chile will have to complete the following requirements:

Negative PCR taken 72 hours before boarding.

In flights with stopovers, the last boarding point is considered. In case of entering by land, it cannot be older than 72 hours from the taking of the sample. This requirement is for every person over the age of 2.

Complete the “Traveler’s Affidavit” form

form online up to 48 hours before boarding, where you will provide contact, health, and travel information. This form will provide a QR code as a means of verification and is available at  www.c19.cl 

Health insurance

Health insurance with a minimum coverage of USD 30,000 that includes coverage for any expenses arising from Covid-19. Please ask Us or directly to [email protected]

Completed a vaccination program and must be validated in Chile

To have completed a vaccination program ( 2 doses ), which must be validated at mevacuno.gob.cl before entering Chile. Here, travelers will request the validation and learn when it will be approved. The vaccination approval period will be informed to the traveler at the time of making the request, procedure that may take up to 30 calendar days. Children under the age of 6 and non-resident foreigners who comply with one or more of the special requirements in  Decree 102 of the Ministry of the Interior  may enter without a complete vaccination program.

Mandatory PCR test performed upon arrival to Chile

All persons over two years of age, regardless of their citizenship, must undergo a mandatory PCR test performed upon arrival to Chile and keep a quarantine until a negative result of the PCR or antigen is obtained. People who do not have their vaccines validated must  undergo quarantine for 7 days, even if the result of the PCR is negative.  All travelers entering must comply with the mandatory tracking for 7  days.

Passports & Visas

The websites listed provide downloadable passport applications as well as the current fees for processing passport applications. For an up-to-date, country-by-country listing of passport requirements around the world, go to the "Foreign Entry Requirement" Web page of the U.S. Department of State at http://travel.state.gov .

Citizens of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand need only a valid passport to enter Chile. Chile charges a reciprocity fee upon entry for Australians and Mexicans.

Before entering Chile, you'll need to fill out a tourist card that allows visitors to stay for 90 days. Do not lose this card, as you will need to present it to Customs when leaving the country. Also, many hotels waive Chile's 19% sales tax applied to rooms when the guest shows this card and pays with U.S. dollars or a credit card. The easiest (and free) way to renew your 90-day stay is to cross the border and return. For $100, tourist cards can be renewed for another 90 days at the Extranjería, Matucana 1223, in Santiago (tel. 600/486-3000 ; www.extranjeria.gob.cl), open Tuesday through Friday from 11am to 2pm (be prepared for excruciatingly long lines), or at any Gobernación Provincial office in the provinces. The extension must be applied for 1 month before the visa's expiration date. Bring the original card, your passport, and photocopies of the two.

Contact the Chilean consulate closest to you for information about children under age 18 traveling alone, with one parent, or with a third party. Child abduction awareness is on the rise, and I've heard of Customs agents preventing parents traveling solo to or from Chile with children. Play it safe and travel with a written authorization by the absent parent(s) or legal guardian granting permission, which must be notarized by the consulate or a reputable notary.

Lost Documents— If you lose your tourist card outside Santiago, any police station will direct you to the Extranjería police headquarters for that province (usually the nearest principal city). In Santiago, go to the Policía Internacional, Departamento Fronteras, General Borgoña 1052 (tel. 2/565-7893 ), open Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 12:30pm.

If you lose your passport, you can get a passport replacement at your country's embassy. The embassy might require you to file a constancia with the police, but without Spanish skills, this can be difficult; call ahead and ask if this document can be waived. It is imperative that you carry a photocopy of your passport with you and another form of ID to facilitate the process.

For Residents of Australia— You can pick up an application from your local post office or any branch of Passports Australia, but you must schedule an interview at the passport office to present your application materials. Call the Australian Passport Information Service at tel. 131-232, or visit the government website at www.passports.gov.au.

For Residents of Canada— Passport applications are available at travel agencies throughout Canada or from the central Passport Office, Dept. of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Ottawa, ON K1A 0G3 (tel. 800/567-6868; www.cic.gc.ca). Note: Canadian children who travel must have their own passport.

For Residents of Ireland— You can apply for a 10-year passport online at www.dfa.ie/passports/ or at the Passport Office at 42-47 Mount Street Lower, Dublin (tel. 01/671-1633 ). Those under age 18 and over 65 must apply for a 5-year passport. You can also apply at 1A South Mall, Cork (tel. 21/494-4700 ) or at most main post offices.

For Residents of New Zealand— You can pick up a passport application at any New Zealand Passports Office or download it from the website. Contact the Passports Office at tel. 0800/225-050 in New Zealand, or log on to www.passports.govt.nz .

For Residents of the United Kingdom— To pick up an application for a standard 10-year passport (5-yr. passport for children under 16), visit your nearest passport office, major post office, or travel agency; or contact the United Kingdom Passport Service at tel.  0300/222-0000  or search its website at www.gov.uk .

For Residents of the United States— Whether you're applying in person or by mail, you can download passport applications from the U.S. Department of State website at http://travel.state.gov . To find your regional passport office, either check the U.S. Department of State website or call the National Passport Information Center toll-free number (tel. 877/487-2778 ) for automated information.

What You Can Bring Into Chile— Any travel-related merchandise brought into Chile, such as personal effects or clothing, is not taxed. Visitors entering Chile may also bring in no more than 400 cigarettes, 500 grams of pipe tobacco, or 50 cigars, and 2.5 liters of alcoholic beverages per adult (ages 18 and up).

What You Can Take Home from Chile   U.S. Citizens— Returning U.S. citizens who have been away for at least 48 hours are allowed to bring back once every 30 days $800 worth of merchandise duty-free. You will be charged a flat duty fee for the next $1,000 worth of purchases. Beyond that, any dollar amount is dutiable at whatever rates apply. On mailed gifts, the duty-free limit is $200. Be sure to have your receipts or purchases handy to expedite the declaration process. Note: If you owe duty, you are required to pay upon arrival in the United States by cash, personal check, government or traveler's check, or money order, and in some locations, by Visa or MasterCard.

To avoid having to pay duty on foreign-made personal items you owned before you left on your trip, bring along a bill of sale, insurance policy, jeweler's appraisal, or receipt. Or register items that can be readily identified by a permanently affixed serial number or marking -- think laptop computers, cameras, and CD players—to avoid problems with Customs. Take the items to the nearest Customs office or register them with Customs at the airport from which you are departing. You will receive, at no cost, a Certificate of Registration, which allows duty-free entry for the life of the item. There is little chance that Customs will seriously question personal items, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

US issues travel advisory, warn of terror threat in Kenya

The American embassy in a security alert issued on Friday advised their citizens to be on the lookout for potential kidnappings and attacks on areas frequented by tourists. 

Citing the past attacks such as the West Gate attack and the Israel attack by Hamas, the US government noted that terrorists may seek to mark the anniversary and thus the need to exercise caution.

“Terrorist groups could attack with little or no warning, targeting hotels, embassies, restaurants, malls and markets, schools, police stations, places of worship, and other places frequented by foreigners and tourists,” stated the US embassy. 

“While attacks can occur at any time, concerns are heightened in proximity to anniversaries of prior terrorist attacks, such as September 11th, the September 21st Westgate Mall attack, and the October 7th Hamas attack against Israel.”

The US detailed that acts of terror occur with no warning hence the need to be vigilant at all times. 

Places frequented by foreigners were also highlighted to be targets of terrorists. It was also explained that the security alert was informed by the terror attack anniversaries that are being observed across the globe.

Terrorist groups could attack with little or no warning, targeting hotels, embassies, restaurants, malls and markets. 

Following the advisory, the Embassy listed actions that ought to be taken as a precaution including avoiding crowded areas, schools, police stations, places of worship, and other places frequented by foreigners. 

US citizens were also called upon to review their local security plans and always monitor the media for updates and alerts. 

"Due to the risk of terrorism from groups based in Somalia, FCDO (Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office) advises against all but essential travel to: within 60km of Kenya’s border with Somalia, Eastern Garissa County, up to 20km north-west of the A3 road, including the Boni National Reserve and Mandera County, excluding Mandera West sub-county," states the UK on its website.

Also flagged is Lamu County, excluding Lamu Island and Manda Island and Tana River County north of the Tana River.

Do not travel to Iran due to the risk of terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping,   arbitrary arrest of U.S. citizens and wrongful detentions .  

Country Summary:  U.S. citizens should not travel to Iran for any reason.

Iranian authorities continue to unjustly detain and imprison U.S. nationals, particularly dual U.S.-Iranian nationals--including students, journalists, business travelers, and academics--on charges including espionage and posing a threat to national security. Iranian authorities routinely delay consular access to detained U.S. nationals and consistently deny consular access to dual U.S.-Iranian nationals.

Violent extremist groups, including U.S. government-designated terrorist organizations, operate in Iran. ISIS and affiliated groups have claimed responsibility for bombings and other attacks in Iran. The threat of terrorist activity persists, as does the risk of death or injury to bystanders.

The U.S. government does not have diplomatic or consular relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran. The U.S. government is unable to provide routine or emergency consular services to U.S. citizens in Iran.

Companies offering surrogacy services in Iran are misrepresenting the security situation in Iran and the risks of the unregulated surrogacy tourism industry. Private companies that arrange such visits and services put U.S. citizens in danger.

Due to the risks of operating civilian aircraft within or in the vicinity of Iran, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) and/or a Special Federal Aviation Regulation (SFAR). • Consider the risks involved in possessing dual  U.S. Iranian nationality .

• Draft a will and designate appropriate insurance beneficiaries and/or power of attorney.
• Discuss a plan with loved ones regarding care/custody of children, pets, property, belongings, non-liquid assets (collections, artwork, etc.), funeral wishes, etc.
• Establish your own personal security plan in coordination with your employer or host organization or consider consulting with a professional security organization.
• Leave DNA samples with your medical provider.
• Have a plan for departing Iran that does not rely on U.S. government assistance.

Chile produced 9.4% of its primary energy from solar in 2023 — the highest in any country that year

According to the Energy Institute’s Statistical Review of World Energy, in 2023, Chile produced 9.4% of its primary energy from solar sources, the highest share in any country. When we look at electricity alone, solar produced 20% of the total.

This marks a trend of continued year-on-year growth in a country that, just a decade earlier, generated almost no electricity from solar.

Chile's growth has been faster than that of other solar champions like Spain and Australia, where the adoption of these technologies started earlier.

Much of Chile's solar energy is captured in the Atacama Desert. This region, in Northern Chile, receives the highest level of sunlight exposure in the world and is home to Latin America’s first solar thermal plant .

In most countries, almost all births are now attended by trained health professionals. But as you can see on the map, this is the case for less than half of births in some of the world’s poorest countries.

Infants used to have a higher risk of dying than 80-year-olds

Infancy used to be an extremely dangerous time of life.

As the chart shows, around 20% of girls in Sweden died before their first birthday in the 18th century. This was higher than the risk among 80-year-olds — at that age, 10% to 20% died each year.

Since then, the risk of dying has reduced across all ages , but the reduction has been most profound for infants. Rates have fallen 100-fold.

This progress has come from improvements in hygiene, clean water and sanitation, vaccination, nutrition, neonatal healthcare, and surgery.

The data comes from the Human Mortality Database and the United Nations World Population Prospects. I’ve shown data from Sweden, which has the longest historical records, stretching back to the 1750s.

Venezuelan migration: a major demographic shift in South America

The chart shows net migration trends for Venezuela, Peru, Chile, and Colombia from 1950 to 2023. This is the net difference between immigrants coming into a country and emigrants leaving. This data published by the UN World Population Prospects shows how significant this demographic event is in the region’s recent history.

Starting around 2015, Venezuela's net migration dropped sharply, with a record 1.36 million people emigrating in 2018. The timing of this shift, accelerating from 2015 onwards, coincides with Venezuela's worsening economic and political instability .

At the same time, wealthier countries like Peru, Chile, and Colombia experienced significant increases in net migration, which suggests they have become major destinations for Venezuelan migrants. This trend is even clearer when visualizing where immigrants from Venezuela moved to .

Less than 60% of the world has access to safe sanitation

Unsafe sanitation is responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths each year. It increases the risk of many fatal diseases, including cholera, diarrhea, dysentery, hepatitis A, typhoid, and polio.

Unfortunately, over 40% of the world does not have access to safe sanitation facilities. This is based on estimates from the WHO/UNICEF’s Joint Monitoring Programme for Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene .

The chart shows the share of the global population that has access to safe sanitation over time. While rates have increased, particularly over the last decade, they still fall far short of the UN’s target of universal access in 2030.

Increasing access to safe sanitation would save many lives from preventable infectious diseases.

Public social spending has increased very substantially in the 20th century

The chart shows that in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, governments’ social spending amounted to very little. Countries spent, at most, 1 to 2% of their national income on public social services.

This changed significantly over the 20th century: public social spending in wealthy countries now amounts to between 15% and 30% of national income.

The biggest reasons for this increase are higher expenditure on healthcare and education .

COVID-19 raised respiratory infection death rates to levels not seen in many decades

The chart shows the death rates from respiratory infections in countries since 1950.

Data comes from the WHO Mortality Database, which compiles data reported by each country. The data typically comes with a few years of delay since it needs to be standardized.

It helps us to look back and see the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic from a historical perspective.

As you can see, there has been a long-run decline in respiratory infection death rates. This is due to improved sanitation, healthcare, and vaccination against diseases such as influenza , tuberculosis , and pertussis .

But during the pandemic, death rates from respiratory infections surged massively due to COVID-19 and reached levels not seen in many decades.
