Traveling slowly and giving a reasonable time for a few select countries is a much more rewarding and memorable way of discovering Europe than hopping all over the place.

central and eastern europe tour

One of the biggest differences between Europeans generally and Americans is the approach to customer service. Your waiter will not tell you their name and come over every five minutes to "check if everything is ok." Waiters take your order, bring it to you, and leave you be until you're ready to leave. They won't bring you the cheque until you ask them to. It’s considered rude to rush people out of a restaurant by bringing them the cheque since in Europe a meal is more an event rather than just a "eat and move on" deal.

In France, if you just talk to a local in English, people will ignore you. If you at least greet them in French, then they themselves start talking to you in English (realizing you are a tourist).

I can’t help noticing how well behaved even quite young children are in restaurants. They understand that they have to sit at the table patiently and eat with the grown-ups in what may appear to your children to be a fairly formal setting.

Pack small! The buildings are old and the stairways are small and narrow and the elevators say they will fit eight, but, they will not fit eight U.S. citizens with large luggage.

What is the best way to get there?

International airports are located in all major cities in Europe.

Do I need a visa?

Travelers can obtain a single visa allowing access and free movement between all 26 countries of the Schengen zone. If you’re visiting from overseas, use  Schengen Visa info  to see if you need a visa.

For countries outside this zone, including the U.K., Ireland, and many countries in Eastern Europe, contact the respective country’s embassy to find out if you need a visa.

When is the best time to visit?

Any time: Europe is a year-round destination. Summer travelers flock to the beaches of Spain, Greece, and the south of France; while winter visitors hit the ski slopes in the Alps or tour Europe’s famous Christmas Markets. The summer months are often the busiest for city sightseeing—a spring or autumn visit means fewer crowds and often lower prices on flights and accommodation.

Festivals take place throughout the seasons in Europe, with top events including Munich’s Oktoberfest (Sept), Venice Carnival (Feb-Mar), Cannes Film Festival (May), Edinburgh Fringe Festival (Aug), and La Tomatina Festival in Valencia (Aug).

Low-cost airlines operate throughout Europe and flying is often the cheapest way to hop between cities.

There are high-speed trains linking cities all across Europe. The most cost-effective option is a Eurail or Interrail Pass, which offers unlimited train travel. Passes are available for individual countries or you can get a Global Pass valid in 33 countries. There’s also the Eurostar train between England and France.

Most countries operate their own nationwide bus companies. Eurolines and Flixbus operate low-cost long-distance bus services to 29 European countries.

Car and passenger ferries operate between the destinations along the English Channel, the Baltic Sea coast, and the Mediterranean coast.

ridesharing

Uber , BlaBlaCar , and Bolt are available in many European cities on your smartphone.

On the ground

What is the timezone.

Time zones range from Greenwich Mean Time in the United Kingdom to Central European Standard Time in France, Italy, and other central European countries; to Eastern European Standard Time in Finland, Romania, and other Eastern countries.

What are the voltage/plug types?

Most European countries use a standard voltage of 220–240 V and the standard frequency is 50Hz. The plug has two round pins. Exceptions include the UK and Ireland, which use a plug with three pins. For plug types, you can reference the international guide here.

What is the currency?

The Euro is used by 19 countries within the Eurozone. Other countries each have their own currencies. Although some non-Euro countries may accept the Euro, this practice is typically restricted to tourist areas, and you will need to use the local currency throughout Europe.

Are ATMs readily accessible?

Are credit cards widely accepted, how much do i tip.

Although tipping etiquette varies from country to country, in general, tipping is not obligatory in Europe. A tip for exceptional service is always appreciated, typically between 10-20%. Some restaurants, especially in major cities, may add a service charge, so it’s worth checking the bill.

Are there local customs I should know?

In almost all European countries, the federal legal age for buying and drinking alcohol is 18 years old. In some countries, the age for purchasing beer and wine is lower. An exception is Iceland, where the legal age for buying and drinking alcohol is 20 years old.

Public transport

Allow others to disembark before boarding, don’t take up more than one seat, and stand to offer seating to pregnant women or someone with a disability. In many cities, it is customary to stand to the right on escalators to allow others to pass.

Try to speak the language

The EU has 24 official languages and even more languages are spoken throughout the rest of Europe. Although you will often find someone who speaks English, especially in major cities and tourist areas, it is polite to enquire if the person speaks English instead of assuming. Where possible, try to learn a few words such as ‘Hello’ and ‘Thank you’ in the local language as a sign of respect.

Keep your VAT receipts

Most European countries add TVA or VAT (value-added tax) to the purchase of goods and services. This sales tax can often be refunded for international travelers, so hold onto your receipts and fill out the claims form at customs on departure.

Always greet people

A courteous, formal greeting in the local language is always appreciated—this includes shop attendants, wait staff, hotel staff, and drivers. However, Europeans, in general, are more reserved than some other cultures, so don’t expect strangers to smile at you in the street or strike up a conversation.

Don’t talk loudly in public

Although customs vary from country to country, in most European cultures, this is considered ugly and rude.

  • Mastercard and HSBC Middle East accelerate travel payment innovation through bank’s first wholesale travel program

central and eastern europe tour

Dubai, UAE; 29 May 2024: Mastercard has joined forces with HSBC Middle East to launch Mastercard Wholesale Program in the region. The move marks the continuation of a long-standing strategic partnership between the two companies and aims to advance automation of buyer and supplier payments for HSBC’s travel merchant customers.

By leveraging virtual cards to digitize the way travel organizations pay each other for the various elements that make up a consumer’s trip, the collaboration will boost liquidity and enhance security across the travel value chain.

HSBC will deploy the Mastercard Wholesale Program (MWP), a virtual card-based B2B payment product, for the first time in the Middle East to its travel industry customers to advance secure, streamline and automated B2B travel transactions. The solution has been specifically designed for and with the travel industry, addressing the lack of visibility, control and protection associated with manual payment methods that are still rife across the sector. The innovative proposition is part of Mastercard’s multi-rail strategy that is already being used by over 400,000 travel merchants globally.

“Card payments continue to power the travel economy, providing essential cash flow and payment security. Our expanded partnership with HSBC in the Middle East is focused on meeting the specific needs the travel sector has today, as it captures all potential growth. By leveraging Mastercard’s virtual card innovation, this initiative provides HSBC’s travel customers with a dynamic commercial payment solution to boost operations and support the sector’s overall recovery,” said Khalid Elgibali, Chief Operating Officer, Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa, Mastercard .

“We are dedicated to improving our specialist products to match the changing demands of our customers. It's essential we give them the digital tools necessary to make the most of their sales opportunities. By using the Mastercard Wholesale Program, traditional and online travel agencies, bedbanks, tour operators and travel management companies will enjoy more control over payment options, while improving cash flow through a secure and efficient platform,” said Kyle Boag, Head of Global Payments Solutions for HSBC in the Middle East, North Africa and Türkiye region .

Insights from IATA predict that 4.7 billion people will travel by air in 2024, a historic high that exceeds the pre-pandemic level of 4.5 billion recorded in 2019. As consumers return to travel and the industry continues to grow, it is essential that the sector re-thinks the processes and technologies that bring these bookings to life. B2B Payments power the travel economy, and the Mastercard Wholesale Program brings benefits across the travel value chain by accelerating the adoption of virtual cards for travel transactions.

Too many options and getting confused !!

Is a round trip best ?

Or fly into LV and go from there to LA, up the coast to SF and fly back from there (or indeed the other way round going from LV to Yosemite , SF , down the coast and fly back from LA)

Is it all too ambitious ???

' class=

If you flew into LV and rented a car for Grand Canyon, you need 1 night at GC. How many nights do you want in LV? I can't tell where you're from, but will there be jet lag adjustments? If so, maybe 2 nights in LV (1 would be enough for some people - it all depends).

Then fly to L.A. and rent another car . What do you want to see in L.A.? Are you thinking amusement parks? You could spend quite a bit of time in L.A., again it depends. But to go up the coast and see it and Yosemite properly, allow 2 nights for Cambria / Pismo and Carmel / Monterey (at least) and then 2 nights for Yosemite (at least).

Then back to SF. 3 nights at least. This puts you at about 10 nights without allocating any time to L.A. If you are not an amusement park person, what do you plan to do in L.A.? Because you might want to spend 3 nights in L.A. and 4 nights in S.F.

You may want to take a day trip out of S.F. to see more scenic parts of California , like the Marin Headlands or go wine tasting, or whatever your pleasure dictates (lots to do in northern California, very different from SoCal, in my view).

But yes, it's doable. Drive from LV to Grand Canyon is about 4-5 hours not counting stops. From coast to Yosemite is about 4-5 hours, and back to SF is about 4 hours in good traffic.

L.A. to Pismo is about 4-5 hours, etc., so there are no days with what I'd think of as long car trips.

Hi lizbex, and welcome to TripAdvisor forums.

When are you planning to make this trip?

Either direction works.

If you have a little bit more time and your trip is in the right season, the loop is great. SFO - SF - Yosemite - eastern Sierra / Lone Pine - Las Vegas - GCNP - L.A. - Pismo Beach / Cambria - Monterey - SFO Either direction would work, but this route has you ending in Monterey just 2 hours from SFO.

Ideas about the lovely Hwy 1 drive along the coast between SF & L.A. are in the Top Questions in the upper right. If you can do the loop, read the info about the drive between Las Vegas & Yosemite.

Specific questions about the destinations are best discussed on the city/destination forums. Read their Top Questions & any relevant threads (but don't reply to someone else's question with your own question), and then start a new thread.

Whenever you're visiting, you MUST have lodging reservations for the National Parks. Yosemite tends to be the most challenging to find lodging, but it can be done!

My theme on this site is "drive less, enjoy more".

You have two vacations here:

2) SF, LA, SD, & coast.

Choose one; save other for next trip.

Thank you. The trip is planned for July.

Like the idea of the "one way drive".

How does this sound ?

Arrive San Fran (3 nights)

Monterey ( 1 night)

Santa Barbara ( big drive here I think !!) ! night

LA (3 nights to do Beverley Hills, Hollywood and Santa Monica )

Palm Springs ( 1night)

Grand Canyon ( 1night)

Las Vegas (2nights) Fly back to UK from there ??

How long will the drive be from Monterey and Santa Barbara ?

PLease use http://maps.google.com and you can map your route.

Lake Geneva

Belle Epoque boats have plied Central Europe's largest lake for 130 years, offering cruises between France and Switzerland and between Geneva and the upper end of the lake (known as the Haut Lac).

Description

Lake Geneva is a water body of superlatives: mildest climate, largest lake and lake with the largest amount of water in Central Europe. The Celts called it “Large Water” or “Lem an”, and to this day it is called Lac Léman in French. And it certainly is big. Scheduled boats, historic paddle steamers and small ferries ply this 582km2 body of water, breaking records as they go. The Compagnie Générale de Navigation (GGN) on Lake Geneva operates eight paddle steamers, the largest European fleet of its kind. Shipping on Lake Geneva also breaks records.Regularly scheduled lake boats connect the numerous villages and cities, and small ferries, called "Mouettes", carry passengers in Geneva rapidly from one shore of the lake to another. Visitors who want to enjoy a comfortable journey book a special culinary trip or a cruise to notable sights, such as the emblem of the city of Geneva, the "Jet d'eau", an up to 140 meter high water fountain that is illuminated at night. If you spend time around Chillon Castle  and the Montreux  promenade, sooner or later you'll be tempted to take a cruise on the “Haut Lac” between Vevey , Montreux, Chillon, Villeneuve and Le Bouveret .
