All you need to know about getting a visa to Cambodia

Cambodia is currently one of the most open and visitor-friendly countries in Southeast Asia following COVID-19 travel restrictions.

As of 17 March 2022, visa-on-arrival has been reinstated for most visitors and all COVID-19 travel-related testing requirements have been lifted.

Do I need a visa to visit Cambodia?

The simple answer is yes: most nationalities need a visa to enter the Kingdom of Cambodia, including citizens of Australia, the European Union, the UK and the US. The main exceptions are citizens from the Association of Southeast Asian (ASEAN) neighbors who are granted visa-free access; these countries include Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam. Some other Asian nationalities, including Japan and South Korea, may also enter Cambodia without a visa in most circumstances. Citizens of Afghanistan, Algeria, Bangladesh, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka and Sudan need to make advance arrangements for a Cambodian visa.

A 1-month tourist visa costs US$30; easily extendable business visas cost US$35. Online tourist e-visas cost US$36, which includes a US$6 processing charge.

Do I need a photograph?

Photos are no longer required with visas for those arriving at airports, although some land crossings still require them and charge US$2–3 if you do not have one.

What about visas during the time of COVID-19?

Cambodia suspended its visa-on-arrival program in June 2020 but made the bold decision to reinstate it with immediate effect from 17 March 2022. It is also possible to apply for a Cambodian e-visa online .

It is also possible to apply for longer-stay visas at Cambodian embassies around the world .

What you need to know when for applying for a Cambodian visa

  • Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your planned entry or you won’t be allowed to enter the country.
  • Cambodian visas take up an entire passport page – unless you are entering on a tourist e-visa, which takes up about a quarter-page.

Are there any special entry requirements related to COVID-19?

Cambodia blew the doors off quarantined Southeast Asia on November 15, 2021, when the government announced an unexpected total reopening for fully vaccinated travelers. Some pre-departure and arrival testing remained in place until recently but the requirement for COVID-19 travel testing was lifted in a bold move towards normality from March 2022. Visitors are free to travel anywhere in Cambodia without the need to quarantine and there are no curfews in place anywhere in the country.

Unvaccinated travelers are still required to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival in a pre-booked hotel or a designated government facility.

Can I extend my Cambodian visa?

Those seeking work in Cambodia should opt for a business visa, as it is easily extendable for longer periods, including multiple entries and exits. A tourist visa can be extended only once and only for 1 month and does not allow for re-entry. Overstaying a visa currently costs US$10 a day.

Visa extensions are issued at the large immigration office located directly across the road from Phnom Penh International Airport. Extensions are easy to arrange, taking just a couple of days. The cost is US$45 for 1 month (for both tourist and business visas), US$75 for 3 months, US$155 for 6 months and US$285 for 1 year. Some hotels and travel agents in Phnom Penh can help with arrangements for a small fee.

Where can I enter Cambodia?

Cambodia has three international gateways for arrival by air – Phnom Penh , Siem Reap and Sihanoukville – and a large number of land borders with neighboring Thailand, Vietnam and Laos. Formalities at Cambodia’s international airports are generally smooth.

Crossing at land borders is usually easy as well, though immigration officers may try to extract some extra cash, either for the visa itself or via some other scam. Crossing from Thailand, immigration officials may demand payment in baht and round up the exchange rate considerably in their favor. Overcharging is also an issue at the Laos border, but not usually a problem at Vietnam borders. Arranging an e-visa in advance can help avoid any hassles or surcharges.

Departure from Cambodia during COVID-19

You do not need a PCR test to leave Cambodia, though you should check whether a “Fit-to-Fly” PCR test or rapid antigen is required for your onward stop, whether a stay in another country, transit through another country or return to your home country.

There are currently COVID-19 testing labs in several cities around Cambodia, including multiple testing labs in Phnom Penh, one lab in Siem Reap, one lab in Sihanoukville and one lab in Battambang . In practice, it is easiest to work with the labs in Phnom Penh or Siem Reap, so we recommend making one of these cities your departure destination from Cambodia if a Fit-to-Fly certificate is required.

Everything you need to know about Cambodia Visa

All foreign nationals except the citizens of countries like Brunei, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Seychelles, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam need a visa to enter Cambodia. For citizens of the United Kingdom, obtaining a visa is a must to enter Cambodia. A UK citizen have four options to get a Cambodian visa;

Visa on arrival

  • Electronic visas (e-visas)
  • Regular visa from the Cambodian embassy

Foreign nationals including citizens of the United Kingdom can obtain a Cambodian visa from the entry ports. This is undoubtedly the easiest way to enter Cambodia, as it allows the foreign national to board a flight to the country, and obtain a visa from the entry port.

Foreign nationals can obtain visa on arrival from the below mentioned entry ports.

  • Phnom Penh International Airport
  • Siem Reap International Airport

Travelers can also obtain visa at the below-mentioned land border crossings in Cambodia.

Cambodia-Vietnam land border crossing

  • Bavet international checkpoint
  • Kha Orm Sam Nor international checkpoint
  • Trapeang Phlong international checkpoint
  • Ha Tien international checkpoint
  • O’Yadaw international checkpoint
  • Trapeang Srer international checkpoint
  • Phnom Den international checkpoint
  • Banteay Chakre international checkpoint

Cambodia-Thailand land border crossing

  • Cham Yeam international checkpoint
  • Poipet international checkpoint
  • O’Smach international checkpoint
  • Chong Sa Ngam/Choam international checkpoint
  • Prom international checkpoint
  • Ban Laem/Daung international checkpoint

Cambodia-Lao land border crossing

  • Dong Krolar International Check Point

Special note: Even though obtaining a visa on arrival is the easiest choice for travelers, there are possibilities that the Cambodian authorities may phase out this privilege without any prior notice. To avoid the hassles, it is highly recommended to obtain an e-visa via online or applying for a regular visa by visiting the Cambodian embassy.

Cambodia e-visa

Foreign nationals can obtain an e-visa by applying through the official government visa processing center. It should be noted that the privilege of e-visas is only given to foreign nationals who wish to enter the country for tourist purposes.

UK nationals can apply for e-visa, but citizens of countries like Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Sri Lanka are not entitled to use this privilege.

In usual cases, a Cambodia tourist visa also known as T-class visa offers a validity of 30 days. If a foreign national want to extend the visa validity of a tourist visa, he or she can contact the Consular Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and can extend its validity by another 30 days. It should be noted that these tourist visas will offer only single-entry privilege for foreign travelers.

Special note: It is highly recommended to apply for an e-visa at least seven days before your travel date. Now, the Cambodian authorities are charging $30 for a 30-day valid e-visa for tourist activities.

Cambodia regular visa

A foreign national can apply for a regular visa by visiting the Cambodian embassy or consulate. After visiting the embassy, he or she should submit all the documents needed to get the visa along with the visa application form. Some people may find it hard to complete the visa application form, and in these times, they can seek the help of entrusted agencies like Visa Genie. The dedicated team of Visa Genie will help the traveler to obtain the visa in a hassle free manner, and you can sit back and relax without any hesitation.

Different types of Cambodian Regular visa

As per the purpose and nature of visit, Cambodian authorities issue various types of visas for a foreign traveler. Please find below the different Cambodian visas a traveler can apply for his or her visits to the country.

Tourist visa (T-class visa)

Tourist visas are also known as T-class visas, and they are issued to foreign nationals who visit the country for tourism-related activities. Please note that a tourist is not allowed to engage in any kinds of business-related activities using a tourist visa.

UK nationals can apply for a tourist visa either through online, or by directly submitting the relevant documents to the Cambodian embassy. Even though visa on arrival is also available for tourists, travel experts reveal that procuring a visa before traveling is the safest option for a foreign citizen.

Requirements to obtain a tourist visa

  • The passport submitted by the foreign national should have a minimum of seven months validity, and it should have at least one blank page.
  • A photograph should be provided, and it should follow the standard requirements. The photograph should be printed in color against a while background, and it should be taken within the last three months. The applicant should show a neutral expression in the photograph, and the face should be centered in the middle.
  • The foreign national should submit all the travel proofs and arrangements. The proof of travel arrangements includes, color copies of up and down flight tickets.
  • The visa application form should be filled correctly, and should be duly signed by the applicant.
  • If you face any problem while filling the visa application form, you can contact Visa Genie for assistance.

Special note: Children should also pay the same fee as the adults, and there is no fee waive for them. However, if the child has at least one Cambodian parent, he or she can make use of the ‘free K-class’ visa, that allows the Cambodian descent to get a free lifetime visa.

Which one should I choose for tourism activities, visa on arrival, regular tourist visa or e-visa?

All foreign nationals have the perception that visa on arrival is the easiest way to enter Cambodia. However, travelers should understand that local immigration officers have the right to prevent the entry of any foreign nationals citing various reasons.

There are also possibilities that the Cambodian authorities may phase out the visa on arrival provision anytime without prior notice. So, to enjoy a hassle-free travel experience, it is highly recommended to apply for an e-visa or a regular tourist visa.

Entrusted agencies like Visa Genie have a dedicated team to assist you in all stages of visa application process, and once you hand over the assignment to us with all the necessary documents, we will make sure that you will get the visa on time.

Cambodia regular visas (E-class)

A Cambodian regular visa is very different when compared to the e-visa. With an e-visa, a foreign traveler will be allowed to stay in the country for only 30 days, and if he or she wishes to stay more, another 30 days can be extended. However, when it comes to Cambodia E-class visas, the foreign national can extend the validity of his or her visa to 3 months, six months and even one year as per the requirements.

Making things clearer, if the traveler wants to extend the validity of his visa after 30 days, he or she can select one among the four e-class visa types available as of now, EB, EG, ER, or ES visa extension.

Previously, there was only one E-class visa extension, but now, the Cambodian agencies have classified it into four to turn the system more transparent.

Note: Even though normally called as e-class visa, these visas are nowhere connected to electronic visas, and to obtain these visas, the foreign national should apply in the Cambodian consulate or embassy.

Cambodia Regular Business Visa (EB visas)

People who wish to travel Cambodia for business purposes can apply for EB visas. These are regular visas and foreign nationals should apply it directly via the Cambodian consulate. Expats in Cambodia who works there can also make use of these visas.

Falling under E-class visas, these business visas offer a validity of 30 days, three months, six months and one year. It should be noted that only three-month and six-month visa extension allows multiple entry privilege to foreign nationals.

Requirements to obtain a regular business visa

  • The submitted passport should have seven months validity with one blank page.
  • The applicant should submit the photographs along with the completely filled visa application form.
  • A business application letter from the UK employer is a must to obtain a business visa to Cambodia. It should be noted that the business application from the UK employer should be dated within one month of the application submission.
  • An invitation letter from the Cambodian entity should be submitted. The letter should detail various aspects of the travel like purpose of visit, and acceptance of immigration responsibility for the foreign national.
  • The invitation letter should be written on the company letterhead, and it should be addressed to the High Commission. The letter should also bear the complete name and signature of the inviting party.

Special note: Obtaining a regular business visa does not give you the right to work in Cambodia. In order to work in Cambodia, you should have a valid work permit, and you may face severe legal consequences if authorities find you violating the law.

Cambodian EG visa

Cambodian EG visas are issued to people who search for a job in Cambodia. The EG visa extension may range from one month to one year, and the foreign national can choose the one as per his or her needs.

However, if you are the one who has already availed an extension to EG visa, in the sense, if you have stayed in the country searching for a job, then chances of getting these visas are pretty less.

Cambodian retirement visa (ER Visa)

Retirement visa extensions is also a part of E-class visas, and they are offered to foreign nationals who retire from their home country, and wish to spend some quality time in Cambodia.

While applying for these visas, the foreign national should prove that he or she has the financial capability to support themselves. In usual cases, retirement visas are issued to foreign nationals who are aged 55 and above.

However, there are cases where foreign nationals have received these visas under the age of 55. In these cases, the foreign nationals should prove documents of their retirement. Using these visa extensions, a foreign national can stay in Cambodia for as low as one month, or as long as one year.

Cambodia student visa (ES visa extension)

ES visa extension is another type which falls in the E-class visa category. These are basically student visas, and in order to obtain it, the foreign national should submit an admission confirmation letter from a Cambodian school or college, and should also show proof of financial security.

How to Travel with Cambodia Visa from UK during Covid-19 Restrictions

EXPERIENCE ON GETTING CAMBODIA ORDINARY VISA FROM A CAMBODIAN EMBASSY & TRAVELING DURING COVID-19

By Deb Pati last updated on January 13, 2021

Sharing is caring!

This article has been written with direct inputs from  Cambodian expat Ben Jarvis who is a British citizen. He got the Cambodia ordinary visa in the UK and traveled to Cambodia while the Covid-19 restrictions were there.

  • Cambodia Business Visa Extension process
  • Cambodia Visa from Canada
  • Cambodia Visa on Arrival at Land Border
  • Get Cambodia Online Visa
  • Cambodia Visa Requirements

So, I got the Cambodia visa from UK very recently and traveled to Cambodia through Singapore airlines during the Covid-19 restrictions. I flew from London to Phnom Penh with a layover in Singapore.

Trip date : 12/9/20–11.25 am Singapore airlines. If you are planning to fly with Singapore airlines, check whether your city is approved to fly over Singapore. For example, at the time of writing this article, Ireland is not one of the countries allowed to transit through Singapore. But if you fly from Heathrow in London, you will be fine.

You can check whether your city is approved for Singapore airline here .

If you are planning to fly through Korean or some other airline, do check with them about the requirements before buying a ticket. And for what it’s worth, it’s better to buy the tickets directly through the airline, rather than Skyscanner or any other agent.

This article will cover everything starting from how to get the Cambodia visa from UK, the Covid-19 test, to quarantine requirements in Cambodia and everything else that happened during. Please check the official sources for any updates as things can change with little notice.

Here is the link to the announcement of the Cambodian embassy in the USA on the entry requirements of foreign citizens to Cambodia during Covid-19 pandemic.

And trust me, a lot did happen.

Although my experience is based on traveling from the UK to Cambodia, once you are in Cambodia, the quarantine and immigration requirements will be all the same irrespective of your nationality.

However, the Cambodia visa requirements might vary a little depending on where you are applying. So check with your embassy.

Hope it helps.

What is Cambodia Ordinary Visa?

Cambodia ordinary visa or “(E) Ordinary Visa” is a 30-day visa which you can extend for 6 months or one year, once you are in Cambodia. This is the one that you need if you want to be employed in Cambodia legally.

Every foreign worker first needs a one month Ordinary Visa to later be renewed for the desired length of time.

Before Covid-19, you could easily get one of these on arrival. However, now you can only get an Ordinary visa for Cambodia in a Cambodian embassy.

For example, Visa to Cambodia for US citizens can be obtained from the Cambodian embassy in the USA .

If you are not coming with an ordinary visa, but some other visa, check out the this detailed guide on visa for Cambodia .

How to Get Cambodia Visa from UK?

I applied for the Cambodia ordinary visa via Cambodian embassy in London. I sent the following documents.

You can call the embassy and speak with Sovvaneth khun. He is a very helpful and efficient guy.

1. Original Passport

A valid passport with at six months until expiry and a blank page.

2.Cambodia Visa Photo Requirements

A 4 X 6 color photo with white background.

3. Cambodia Visa Application Form

The Cambodia visa application form is same for all kinds visas. I filled out the application form and sent it.

4. Letter of Employment

The letter of employment is a simple letter from the employer to show we have a legitimate job/volunteering /whatever. Nothing fancy. My boss sent me pdf via email and I printed it off and sent.

Note that, I was not sponsored or invited.

5. Proof of Insurance

All foreigners wishing to enter and stay in Cambodia are now needed to have health insurance with a minimum medical coverage of 50,000 USDs. Covid-19 insurance Forte Insurance is officially recommended by Cambodia. But you can buy from any other provider as long as it covers Covid-19.

In my case, I had “stay sure 1 year backpacker” policy from another provider that covers multi-country travel and Corona (only if diagnosed positive).

Cambodia Ordinary Visa fee : $ 35 USD.

It took three days for the passport to come back by post, with my new Cambodian ordinary visa.

Everything Needed to Travel to Cambodia during Covid-19

While getting the Cambodian visa in UK does not involve any of these documents, you would need to have all of them on you before traveling to Cambodia.

1. Covid-19 Test Results within 72 Hours before Departure

This is the most crucial document of course. What you need to know is that as long as the certificate is dated and stamped within 72 hours before you fly, it’ll be fine. The rule applies to the certificate, not the test.

The COVID-19 certificate has to be the original copy, not a digital copy even though it has the stamp and signature.

Some people have even had trouble because the signature was in black ink and may be photocopied, which is crazy because can print color. So if you can, ask them to sign in blue ink.

Here is my timeline.

cambodia travel visa uk

I got my test done at One 5 health . You can book the test online, after which they will send a confirmation via email (check junk) regarding how the process works. It cost me  £320.

Let them know that you are traveling to Cambodia. They are familiar with the immigration requirements of Cambodia and would know that you need a wet certificate as opposed to email.

If you can get an appointment before 9.45 am, then the results are guaranteed the same day between 5-10 pm. Be sure to call them and coordinate with them.

Address: One 5 health, 30 Moorgate, London EC2R 6PJ, United Kingdom (+44) 02034884415

I had my test at 11 am on 10th September 2020. I went and collected results and the hard copy of the original certificate at 3 pm on the 11th of September. The result was time/dated 8:38 am 11/9/20 (test was on 10th).

I flew on the 12th.

2. Hotel Reservations

Hotel reservations are not mandatory, but some airlines are insisting you have a reservation now. So I would suggest you to book for a couple of nights.

You can try booking through the hotel directly but tell them you are not invited/sponsored in case they refuse you. Or try through booking.com and use the free cancellation option to cancel it later.

Note that you can only book Sokha or Tian yi .

If you are coming as a regular passenger, you are just assigned a hotel for the first one to two nights. After you get your results, if no one on your flight is positive, you can go and stay in a place of your choosing for the remaining time.

As long as you write down the address where you will be staying during self-isolation on the immigration forms, it should be fine.

3. Return Ticket

I would suggest booking a refundable return ticket that you can cancel the next day just in case. Some of the airlines seem to be pretty hung up on the return ticket, so just have one on you.

There are many ways to get flight itinerary for visa or even rent or buy.

4. 2000 USDs in Cash

You need to deposit 2000 USDs after arriving in Cambodia. After arriving in Cambodia, you’re meant to quarantine for 2 weeks, re-test after that, then get the remainder of your $2000 deposit back if negative.

Now you can pay by cash or using a credit card. But I would strongly recommend you to bring cash. If the POS machine doesn’t read your card or the electronic payment doesn’t work, they will most probably deport you.

Trip Report from London to Cambodia

My flight was at 11:30am, I arrived at 9am expecting a long check in, I was right.

Boarding the Flight: Documents

Ok, so first they asked me for proof of a return ticket, stating it was a requirement. I explicitly explained that I am not a tourist. I am going to live and work there, so why would I need a return ticket…!!!

Next they asked me for proof of hotel reservations on Sohka or Tian yi. Once again I explained I am travelling as a “regular traveller”. I’m neither sponsored or invited.

Other passengers were explaining this too, and we then talked to the Singapore Air manager explaining that you can’t even book a room at Sohka or Tian yi without providing details of sponsors/guarantor details! After waiting for 1.5 hours we were allowed to board.

In all fairness the Singapore airline staff were very empathetic and only doing their jobs with the information they were given and instructed by.

I would advise maybe booking, get confirmation, and then canceling just to have “proof” of booking to save time and hassle.

London to Singapore

So went through customs security etc and boarded the plane. It departed on time. Transit passengers boarded first at the back of the plane followed by people departing in Singapore.

The flight was normal capacity, pre-COVID,and pretty full. Nice comfortable seats, entertainment, etc. Meals were very nice (for airlines) meat and a veggie option. I had braised pork.

They served two meals, the first right after take-off and second before landing. So bring snacks, it’s a long 13 hours.

Singapore Layover

Arriving at Singapore was great, off the plane, quick temp check, and into the holding lounge. Terminal 3 has been designated for transiting passengers. It has all that you need, big airy terminal, loads of comfortable benches, and areas to get a peaceful sleep.

AC throughout, hot food, snacks, coffees, water refills, and outdoor smoking “room”, free WiFi. No ATM that I could see but you can get currency exchanged at the information desk.

Singapore layover while traveling on Cambodia visa from UK

I didn’t notice any pharmacy. So think ahead if you are prone to headaches or travel. I’ve always liked Changi airport and I certainly wasn’t disappointed. I would like to acknowledge the Singapore Airlines staff’s excellent organization and professionalism.

Boarding and security checks were quick, efficient, and very organized. I naively hoped Phnom Penh arrival would be the same.

The flight to Phnom Penh was on a very packed plane, small and stuffy. But hey it got us there in one piece. A hot meal was provided mid-flight.

Arriving in Phnom Penh, Immigration & Everything else

First, make sure you fill out all the required forms in the plane- the immigration card, health declaration, etc. This will save you time and queuing when arriving. Have all your documents, boarding pass, and passport ready.

They check your PCR test, medical certificate, insurance etc… But don’t worry too much. If Singapore Air allowed you to board with the documents you have then you should be all good.

cambodia travel visa uk

After documents are checked and stamped, next is the money depositing, I chose Cab bank, but alceada is also available. You hand over your 2k cash and passport and for scanning then are given a blue invoice sheet. Keep this safe!

Next is immigration, where they keep your passport, I was unaware of this and became concerned but was told it would be returned after receiving test results. It feels weird leaving without your passport but I understand why with no passport, you can’t do a runner.

Next up it is the PCR test. Just grin and bear it. Then onto the bus departure. The process wasn’t clear with no clear instructions given but just follow the crowd, have all documents to hand and you’ll Be fine from arrival to getting on a bus.

It took only an hour. Once on the bus, we had to wait another 1 hour, waiting for all busses to be full to travel in convoy.

Like I said I hadn’t pre booked a hotel and from. What I witnessed was that it was not important anyways as many people. After hearing and reading all the bad reports I was hoping not to be taken to Tian yi. Luckily we weren’t. After waiting for 60 minutes on the bus, we departed and after only a short bus ride we arrived at comfort city hotel.

Quarantine Hotel Stay in Cambodia

cambodia travel visa uk

While we were on the bus, a female staff member had boarded the bus and explained very clearly in khmer and English that rooms would be available for one person $90 per night or for $60 per night on sharing basis. No matter what you choose, the meals are inclusive.

After a long and tiring 24 hours, I opted for my own room. The staff was very welcoming and helpful. 75% speak English and were very informative and helpful. I was so pleasantly surprised as I entered my room.

Big airy rooms, very clean, balcony, big bathroom with a waterfall shower head (much needed) toiletries, water, coffee kettle, and WiFi. Smart TV and AC. I was given a meal that consisted of rice, sweet and sour chicken, noodles, and vegetables. It was very ample.

I awoke the next morning to the sound of the local Pagoda which brought out a smile on my face as the realization struck that I made it.

Can You Extend the Cambodia Ordinary Visa?

After the initial 30 days, when you go to extend your Cambodia business visa, you can choose an EB, EG, ER, or ES visa extension, also known as an EOS, or extension of stay. This can be done once you are in Cambodia.

Here is how to extend Cambodia ordinary visa .

Thank You Deb for all the above information. It helps a lot in preparation. I will be departing for Cambodia in mid-October 2020 from Singapore. I am aware that there are 14 days’ isolation if all the passengers tested negative. However, I have my own rented house in Kratie province, I am not sure if I could proceed there in the normal squeezy taxi (van)? Or, should I just stay with my friend in his house in Phnom Penh to observe the isolation? I am wondering if the local authority would really knock on my door to check on me 🙂

Hi Thomas, They would do a fresh test when you arrive in Cambodia. You would need to stay in one of the designated hotels at least for the first two days until the test results are ready. Then if no one is negative, you can quarantine anywhere for the rest of the time. But until the test results are back, there is no choice. They are pretty strict about that.

Thank you Deb for the precious information. Looking forward to return to Cambodia this month 🙂

Thanks for this. It has been really difficult to get information about visa availability in the UK.

Can I ask, did you apply for and get your visa through the mail, or did you go to the embassy in person.

I’m asking because I want to apply but I live far from London.

Thanks again for this comprehensive article.

Hi Chris, Thanks for stopping by. The visa was applied through mail only. Not in person.

Hi deb you say a letter of employment ?can this be from a uk company saying they are sending me to cambodia to source products or somthing

September 10, 2021 at 11:26 am

Hi Russel, if you are working for an international company, it’s possible to get a letter of employment from a Cambodian business through an agent. That would surely work.

September 10, 2021 at 5:35 pm

Thanks bud i have no job offer im from the uk and used to easy get the ordinary Visa but that was b4 they was asking for letters .if i type one up my self from a made up uk company do you think that will work :-).

September 12, 2021 at 3:49 pm

Hi Russel, Yes, there are expats who have done that exactly by registering the business in Cambodia but when they were already in Cambodia. As far as I know, you would still need an agent’s help to do it from outside Cambodia. The letter also needs have a business stamp.

“Letter of Employment The letter of employment is a simple letter from the employer to show we have a legitimate job/volunteering /whatever. Nothing fancy. My boss sent me pdf via email and I printed it off and sent.

Note that, I was not sponsored or invited.”

Hi, so are you working in Cambodia? is it possible to enter without a job offer?

October 26, 2020 at 7:56 am

Hey Bren. The Cambodia embassy in the UK issues visas without sponsorship. Sponsorship refers to a Company inviting you for employment and they will guarantee your deposit. The wording is a little vague, I agree. They still ask for an employment letter though. Some expats have managed to get the ER visa for Cambodia without an employment letter by showing proof of guaranteed income- so there is that. And yes, Ben is working in Cambodia.

February 2, 2021 at 12:32 pm

I just walked in Embassy by person today. They asked me for the invitation letter. I tried to explain the guaranteed income but they just say no :(. I walked in the embassy because i tried to email them but no one respond.

Hi, I will be travelling to Cambodia 3 March and got insurance from Safety Wing. I saw somewhere about Forte Insurance being “mandatory” now but felt it was a fishy post on FB. Is this true though?

March 3, 2021 at 9:43 am

Hi Dinda, Safety Wing is totally fine. Forte Insurance is simply recommended. It’s not mandatory. Official page of Cambodia embassy in USA There are a lot of expats who went with other insurances with medical coverage of at least 50000 USDs and they had no troubles.

Cambodia Tourist Visa: Requirements and Application Process

Published: June 28, 2024

You can consider applying for a Cambodia tourist visa if you are not eligible for Visa on Arrival (VOA) and/or your e-Visa application was refused.

If you are eligible, I recommend applying for e-Visa first. But if you must apply for a Cambodia tourist visa, then this guide will help.

QUICK SUMMARY:

  • Who requires it: 10 nationalities (also eligible for e-Visa)
  • Validity: 3 months
  • Allowed stay: 30 days
  • Visa fee: 30 USD
  • Processing time: 3 working days
  • Extensions: Once for 30 additional days

If you haven’t already, I recommend reading the Cambodia Visa Guide to learn more about available visa options for tourists, their eligibility, and requirements.

Table of Contents

Understanding cambodia tourist visa.

Cambodia Visa on Arrival Sample

Tourist visa validity

The Cambodia tourist visa is valid for 3 months from the date of issue. You must enter Cambodia within this validity period.

Duration of stay

The allowed duration of stay for the Cambodia tourist visa is 30 days. You can extend your stay once for another 30 days from the immigration office in Phnom Penh or an agent within the country.

Allowed number of entries

Cambodia tourist visa is single-entry only. Only a few Visa-Exempt passport holders, such as Japan, South Korea or China are eligible to get multiple-entry tourist visas of 3-year validity.

Allowed ports of entry

With a tourist visa in your passport, you can enter Cambodia through any international border, airport, or seaport.

When to apply

The processing time for Cambodian tourist visas usually depends on the embassy where you apply but most get processed within 3 business days. Considering holidays and delays, I recommend applying at least 1 week before your trip.

To summarize:

  • Earliest to apply: 3 months before traveling
  • Latest to apply: 1 week before traveling

Tourist visa extension

Tourist visas can be extended once for another 30 days of stay. You can extend your Cambodia tourist visa at the Immigration office in Phnom Penh. To extend in any other city or province, you will have to use an agent.

The extension process takes about one week. You will have to apply for your visa extension at least one week before your visa expires.

Cambodia Tourist Visa Requirements

Cambodia Visa Required Countries

Who requires it?

The below 10 countries require a tourist visa to travel to Cambodia.

  • Afghanistan
  • Saudi Arabia

These above 10 nationalities are also eligible for Cambodia e-Visa . I suggest applying for an e-Visa as it saves time and a trip to the embassy. But if you plan to use a Cambodian border that does not accept e-Visas, then you must apply for a tourist visa from the nearest Cambodian embassy.

Nationals that are eligible for Cambodia Visa on Arrival (VOA) are also eligible to apply for a tourist visa from the embassy.

There have been instances of travelers with “weak” passports, especially African passports getting refused Visas on Arrival and sent back. I do not know the specific reasons, I believe it’s based on the judgment and mood of the immigration officers at the border. If you hold such a passport, I recommend a tourist visa from the embassy or an e-Visa.

That said, regardless of where you are from, always apply for the e-Visa first. If your e-Visa is refused (the chances are slim but it may happen), only then go for a visa from a Cambodian embassy.

Documents required

The following are required for a Cambodia tourist visa application.

  • Original passport
  • Copy of passport biodata page
  • Copy of previous Cambodia visa sticker (if you held a Cambodia visa before)
  • Copy of latest visa, residence permit or stay permit stamp (if applying from a third country)
  • Duly filled out and signed visa application form ( See example form )
  • One recent photograph
  • Copy of flight itinerary to Cambodia

Apart from the above, the embassy may request the following documents if necessary.

  • Proof of financial support (bank statements)
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel bookings)

Passport requirements

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months at the time of entry into Cambodia. Your passport must have at least 2 blank pages for visa sticker and stamps.

Photo requirements

The photo must meet the following requirements.

  • Must of size 4 x 6 cm
  • Must be the latest, taken within the last 3 months
  • Must be in color against a white background

Flight itinerary to Cambodia

You must submit your flight tickets to and out of Cambodia. These are not fully paid flight tickets. This is only a flight itinerary for visa application . Do not purchase flight tickets before your visa is approved.

Tourist visa fee

The tourist visa fee is 30 USD. It may be payable in the local currency.

Processing time

The Cambodia tourist visa processing time is 3 business days. Most embassies process applications within this time frame. The day you submit the application is not counted. It may also be longer in some cases.

Tourist Visa Application Process

How to apply for tourist visa at the embassy.

Begin by checking if the embassy where you will apply requires you to book a slot at a specific time and date.

Also, check if they have the application form uploaded on their website. To save some time, you can print and fill it out beforehand.

Gather all documents and scans and go to the embassy. You will submit and pay. Return after 3 business days to collect your passport with the visa inside.

How to extend tourist visa in Cambodia?

You can extend your Cambodia tourist visa at the Immigration office in Phnom Penh. To extend anywhere else, you will have to use an agent.

The process to extend in Phnom Penh is below.

  • Go to the Cambodian Immigration Department office in front of the airport ( Google Maps link )
  • Go early in the morning, preferably around opening time at 8 AM
  • Fill out the visa extension form, submit your passport, and pay the extension fee of 30 USD
  • Go back to the immigration office after one week to pick up your passport.

NOTE: The immigration office will keep your passport for one week. Make sure to apply at least one week before your tourist visa expires.

Entry Procedure at the Border

Cambodia e-Arrival Portal

Pre-requisite: Passport and visa

Before your trip, make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from the day of arrival. Make sure your Cambodia tourist visa is still valid at the time of entry.

Within 7 days before your trip: Cambodia e-Arrival card

Make sure to submit the Cambodia e-Arrival Card (CeA) online within 7 days before you arrive in Cambodia. Download, screenshot or print the QR code after submitting the arrival card. You will have to show this QR code at immigration in Cambodia.

If you prefer using your cell phone, you can download the Cambodia e-Arrival App ( Apple App Store or Google Play Store ) and fill out the form. You don’t need to download the QR code. You can open the app and show the QR code at immigration in Cambodia. The QR code in the app can be accessed without the internet.

At the airport: Immigration

At the immigration in Cambodia, present your passport, visa and e-Arrival card QR code. You may be asked how long you plan to stay in Cambodia, proof of onward ticket, etc. If traveling on a one-way ticket, I recommend getting a cheap onward ticket online.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best option for a tourist visa for cambodia.

The easiest tourist visa option for Cambodia is Visa on Arrival. It is the cheapest and is available at all ports of entry. However, 10 countries are not eligible and others may undergo extended scrutiny.

The e-Visa is the next best option. It is simple and costs just a little more than the VOA. However, it’s not available at all borders.

If neither of the above is suitable for your situation, apply for a tourist visa at the embassy.

How to Get a Cambodia Visa – Your Quick and Easy Guide

So you’re going to Cambodia? Amazing! We love travelling in Cambodia and know you’re in for a great time. This is your guide to getting the right Cambodia visa for your trip and passport. Read on…

Do You Need a Cambodia Visa?

Which visa do you need, what’s better the cambodia e-visa or visa on arrival, how to get a cambodian tourist e-visa, how to get a tourist visa on arrival, how to get an e-class visa, can you extend your cambodia visa, what if you overstay your cambodian visa, do you need travel insurance for cambodia, don’t miss our great cambodia travel guides.

This post is written in partnership with e-visa.co.uk .

Cambodia offers several different visa options for travellers. Depending on where you’re arriving, how long your trip will be, and what passport you hold, some options are better than others.

Once you’ve decided what visa you need, the process is relatively straightforward.

And that’s great news because Cambodia is a fantastic country for travellers. It has something for everyone, whether you are backpacking , want affordable luxury , are looking to hang out on a tropical island, or dive into a real jungle adventure .

On our first visit to Cambodia, Stephen and I cycled in from the Thai border, through Siem Reap, Battambang, and Phnom Penh, and then to Kampot and along the south coast. On my second visit, I did a solo adventure, arriving at the southern border and going north into Cambodia’s wild east.

I know you’re going to have an incredible time in Cambodia, so let’s get that Cambodia visa organized so you can start planning your trip !

Are you ready to get started? Then read on to discover…

How to Get a Visa to Cambodia

Almost all nationalities need a visa to visit Cambodia.

If you’re from the US, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, India, or anywhere in Europe, South America or most other countries in the world, our visa tips apply to you.

You don’t need a visa if you’re from Brunei, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam . With one of the above passports, you are allowed to stay between 14–30 days, so check before you arrive.

If you are from Afghanistan, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sri Lanka or Sudan , you’ll need to get a visa at a consulate before you arrive.

Get the tourist e-visa if you are:

Staying less than 30 days and…

  • Arriving by air to Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, or Sihanoukville
  • Arriving by land from Thailand (at Cham Yeam/Koh Kong, Poi Pet/Banteay Meanchey)
  • Arriving by land from Vietnam (at Bavet/Svay Rieng)
  • Arriving by land from Cambodia (at Tropaeng Kreal/Stung Treng)

Find out how to get the e-visa below.

Get the tourist visa on arrival if you are:

  • Staying less than 30 days, arriving at one of the land border crossings not mentioned above
  • Staying less than 30 days, not sure when or where you will arrive

Find out how to get the visa on arrival below.

Staying 30–60 days?

You should still get an e-visa or the visa on arrival. You’ll need a visa extension after 30 days.

Need a multiple-entry or long-term Cambodia visa?

For long-term stays, you can get a business visa, known as the e-Class visa. (Note that the e-Class visa is not the e-visa — which is a t-Class visa). For e-class visas longer than 6 months, you are also granted multiple entries.

There is no multiple entry visa for shorter stays in Cambodia, so if you’re going in and out, you need to get a new visa each time.

cambodia travel advice

These are actually the same visa — a 30-day travel visa — just delivered in two different ways.

Reasons to get the e-visa

  • You can plan ahead, so no nasty surprises at the airport
  • Avoid the visa line at the airport after your long flight
  • Avoid scams when using a land border

Reasons to get a visa on arrival

  • It can be a little cheaper if arriving by air
  • More flexibility if you’re not sure when or where you will be arriving
  • Your trip starts in less than 4 days
  • You’ll be arriving at a land border where the e-visa is not valid (see the list in the e-visa section above for valid crossings)

If you qualify for an e-visa, we recommend you get it. It’s just more convenient to get your visa online before you arrive in Cambodia, preventing unwelcome surprises when you get there. Plus, you’ll be able to skip the long visa line at the airport.

Cost of a Cambodia e-visa

  • $40 from the Cambodia e-visa website
  • $55–70 from a visa service

What you’ll need to get a Cambodia e-visa online:

  • Must have 6 months on passport with at least one double-sided blank page
  • Must apply online at least 4 days before travel (we advise you leave a couple of weeks just in case)
  • One passport photo to be submitted online
  • Take 2 copies of your visa letter with you. You’ll give one to the officials when you arrive, one when you leave

How to get your Cambodia e-visa

On the Cambodia website

You can get the e-visa on the official Cambodia government website . They say processing takes three days but the system is not fool-proof, so apply at least a week in advance. Also, if there is any problem with your application, you will lose your visa fee and have no visa to show for it.

From a visa service

If you’d rather have someone else deal with the red tape, you can use a visa service to get your Cambodia e-visa . They make the process easier for you by providing:

  • Smart application forms that automatically track down frequently made mistakes
  • Customer service 24/7, including holidays and weekends
  • Checking your application manually to make sure everything is correct
  • More payment options, including PayPal
  • Full refund of the application fee if the visa application is denied for any reason
  • Can get a rush service if you are applying late

You will pay a little more for the service but it might save you time, stress and even money in the long-run.

cambodia white sand beach

If you’re not sure where you’ll arrive in Cambodia, or when you’ll get there, then a visa on arrival makes sense. Getting a visa on arrival is a simple, if sometimes stressful, process.

To make sure things go smoothly at the border, you’ll need all the items listed in the requirements section below, plus some patience and a sense of humour.

Cost of a Cambodia visa on arrival

  • $30 at the airport
  • $35–55 at a land border, depending on bribes and other services you might choose

What you’ll need for tourist visa on arrival:

  • Immigration form which you’ll get on the plane
  • Cash in US dollars (there is a US ATM in the airport arrivals area)
  • One passport photo (apparently this is no longer needed as of June 2019 but you might want to bring one just in case)

Visa on arrival at the airport

If you’re arriving at the airport and for some reason did not get an e-visa, getting a visa on arrival is relatively simple.

Just fill out the immigration card you’re given on the plane and then wait in line. Follow the instructions of the officials at the airport and eventually you will have your visa.

Visa on arrival at the border

Crossing into Cambodia by land can be an exciting, confusing, and aggravating experience. It’s true that everyone wants to make a little money off you, including the guest house where you arranged your transportation, the mini-bus driver, random guys hanging out at the border, and the border-crossing officials, too.

So along with the basic visa requirements listed above, you should be aware of the border crossing scams so you come away with less stress and more money in your pocket.

We’ve crossed the land border in and out of Cambodia several times with no trouble. Read our post about getting the bus to Cambodia and pay close attention to the section on border scams to be sure you know what to expect.

If you’re planning an extended stay in Cambodia, of more than 60 days, and don’t want to be doing visa runs every month, then consider applying for an e-Class visa. This is not to be confused with the e-visa, which is actually a t-Class (tourist-class) visa.

An e-Class visa is technically a business visa, but it also applies for digital nomads, students, and retirees who want to live in Cambodia.

Like a tourist visa, you can get your first e-Class visa on arrival and it is valid for 30 days.

The big difference is that, unlike the tourist visa, an e-class visa can be extended indefinitely. The longer extensions, of 6 or 12 months, are even valid for multiple entry.

Find out more about e-Class visas in this post →

cambodia travel visa uk

A tourist visa can be extended once, for up to 30 days.

The easiest way to do this is to use a travel agent. It will cost you around $40–50 but might take a week or more.

You might get a slightly cheaper deal at the Department of Immigration in Phnom Penh. However, that means a couple of trips out to the airport, where the office is located, and the hassle of dealing with red tape. Plus, you may be charged the same fee as through an agent anyway.

The main problem with getting a visa extension is that you might be left sitting waiting in one place while someone else has your passport.

If you try to leave Cambodia with an expired visa, you will be charged $10 per each day of overstay. If you’re only over by a couple of days, this can be a better option than trying to get a visa extension. Just make sure you have exact change in USD, as your chances of getting change from the immigration guards is slim!

If you overstay by more than 30 days, official action, like arrest or deportation, can be taken against you. So don’t do it!

Of course you do!

Though Cambodia is generally a very safe place to travel, you should still make sure to have good travel insurance.

Travel insurance is a small expense (usually about a dollar or two per day) to guard against bankruptcy in case the worst comes to the worst.

It certainly came in handy when Stephen had elbow surgery in Germany after a simple fall off his bike. And I was happy to have it when I got malaria in Laos .

Do you need a visa for Cambodia?

Woman smiling whilst riding in Tuk Tuk through the streets of Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Yes, for most visitors to  Cambodia , a tourist (T) visa is required for entry. Countries that require a visa include Australia, the UK, Canada, South Africa, the USA and Ireland. This visa costs USD $36 and is valid for 30 days. Please be mindful to carefully check your entry and exit dates as it is a serious offence to overstay.

The nationals from the following countries can stay in Cambodia for either 21 or 30 days (depending on the country) and do not need a tourist visa: Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Brunei and Myanmar.

There are several options for getting a Cambodian visa.

  • Apply online for an  E-Visa  before travelling. Approval can take around 3 days.
  • Get a visa at a Cambodian Embassy or overseas consulate prior to arrival in Cambodia.
  • For most visitors, you can also get a visa upon arrival at either the Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville or Siem Reap International Airports. If you are crossing into Cambodia by land from Thailand, Vietnam or Laos, you may also be able to obtain a visa from the International Check Point border. It is advised to check if your entry point can issue a tourist visa before you depart.

The nationalities that are required to obtain a visa in their country at the Royal Embassy of the Kingdom of Cambodia prior to travel are Afghanistan, Algeria, Arab Saudi, Bangladesh, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Sudan and Nigeria.

Please note that conditions are subject to change, so it’s always worth checking before you travel.

Learn more about obtaining a Cambodian visa

When applying for a Cambodian tourist visa you will need the following:

  • A passport that is valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry into Cambodia. Please note that if your passport is damaged or there are pages missing, you could be refused entry.
  • One recent passport-sized colour photo
  • Application forms
  • Other documents that are relevant to your stay in Cambodia, such as hotel reservation documents

Foreigners Present in Cambodia System

Another thing to note when travelling to Cambodia is that all foreigners are required to be registered in the Foreigners Present in Cambodia System (FPCS). This new system is used for keeping track of foreigners coming in and out of the country and is mainly in place for safety in case of an emergency.

If you are staying in a hotel or guesthouse, this is normally done for you, however, if you have no landlord or own your own home in Cambodia, you will need to register yourself. It is recommended to register before arrival. To complete, download the app using an Android or iOS device and follow the steps, you will need a copy of your passport and information about your accommodation in Cambodia.

The cost for a single-entry tourist (T) visa for a stay in Cambodia of up to 30 days is USD $36. This fee covers the processing charge (USD $6) and once approved, is valid for use within 3 months.

  • Go to  evisa.gov.kh . This is the only official government e-visa portal for Cambodia. Be aware that there are other websites that falsely claim to provide this service.
  • Follow the prompts to sign up, sign in, apply, and pay online.
  • After your application has been processed and approved (usually within three business days), download your e-visa from the online portal.
  • Print out your e-visa, and present it on arrival in Cambodia.

The page is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Exercise increased precautions in:

  • Phnom Penh due to  crime.
  • Very remote areas of Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Pursat, Siem Reap, Pailin, and Kampong Thom provinces due to  land mines.

Read the  country information page  for additional information on travel to Cambodia.

  • Prepare a contingency plan for emergency situations. Review the  Traveler’s Checklist .

Phnom Penh – Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution

Street crime, particularly phone and bag snatchings, occurs frequently in areas where foreigners gather; resistance can result in injury. Be aware of your surroundings at all times and to be extra vigilant when displaying items like jewelry, bags and cell phones in public. Violent crime, such as sexual assault and homicide, is common, sometimes against foreigners.

Do not physically resist any robbery attempt. Use caution when walking or driving at night.

Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Pursat, Siem Reap, Pailin, and Kampong Thom provinces – Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution

Land mines and unexploded ordnance are found in very remote areas throughout Cambodia, and especially in Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Pursat, Siem Reap, Pailin, and Kampong Thom provinces.

Do not touch unknown metal objects; instead notify the Cambodia Mine Action Center at 012-800-473/023-995-437. Use a local guide when walking in forested areas or dry rice paddies in these areas.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Please visit the  Embassy’s COVID-19 page  for more information on entry/exit requirements related to COVID-19 in Cambodia.

You will need a valid passport and a Cambodian visa to enter Cambodia. Tourist and business visas are valid for one month from the date of entry into Cambodia.  Cambodia offers on-line visa processing . You may also apply in person at the Cambodian Embassy located at 4530 16th Street NW, Washington, DC 20011, tel. 202-726-7742, fax 202-726-8381.

Tourists, diplomats, and business travelers may also obtain a Cambodian visa at the airports in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and at all major border crossings. Cambodian immigration officials at airports now collect fingerprints upon entry using an inkless, electronic process. You will need a passport valid for a minimum of six months beyond the date of entry into Cambodia.

If you remain in Cambodia beyond the date of your authorized stay, Cambodian immigration officials will likely impose a fine of $10 per day overstayed. In cases of excessive overstays, you may be arrested for violating immigration laws and detained as you undergo official deportation proceedings at your own expense. Deportation from Cambodia may result in your being prohibited from reentering Cambodia in the future. You should contact the nearest Cambodian embassy or consulate, or visit the  Embassy of the Kingdom of Cambodia website  for the most current visa information.

The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any HIV/AIDS entry restrictions for visitors to or foreign residents of Cambodia

Safety and Security

The Department of State is concerned that individuals and groups may be planning terrorist actions against U.S. citizens and interests, including at sites frequented by Westerners in Southeast Asia. Extremist groups in Southeast Asia have transnational capabilities to carry out attacks against locations where Westerners congregate. Although the extremist threat in Cambodia is considered low and terrorist attacks are not common, U.S. citizens residing in, or traveling to, Cambodia should exercise caution in clubs, discos, bars, restaurants, hotels, places of worship, schools, outdoor recreation venues, tourist areas, beach resorts, and other places frequented by foreigners. U.S. citizens should remain vigilant with regard to their personal security and avoid ongoing police enforcement actions, crowds, and demonstrations. See Department of State’s  Worldwide Caution .

Land mines and unexploded ordnance are found in remote rural areas throughout Cambodia, and especially in Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Pursat, Siem Reap, Kampong Thom, and Oddar Meanchey  provinces. Travelers in these regions should never walk in forested areas or even in dry rice paddies without a local guide. Areas around small bridges on secondary roads are particularly dangerous. Travelers should not touch anything that resembles a mine or unexploded ordnance; they should notify the Cambodia Mine Action Center at 012-800-473/023-995-437.

Crime:  Cambodia has a critical crime rate, including street crime. Military weapons and explosives are readily available to criminals despite authorities’ efforts to collect and destroy such weapons. Armed robberies occur frequently, and foreign residents and visitors, including U.S. citizens, are among the victims. The Embassy has also received reports that residences and hotel rooms of U.S. citizens in Phnom Penh were burglarized while the occupants were asleep.

The most common type of theft is “snatch and grab” robbery, and anything that can be quickly grabbed is at risk: cameras, jewelry, purses, backpacks, mobile phones, etc. Exercise caution and keep belongings out of sight if you travel via “tuk-tuk,” as passengers in these open-air vehicles have been targeted by thieves. If walking along the street, make yourself less of a target by carrying bags or items in your hand or on the shoulder that is furthest from the street. If someone attempts to rob you, you should surrender your valuables immediately, since any perceived resistance may be met with physical violence, including lethal force. The U.S. Embassy has received reports of violent robberies escalating into fatalities.

Pickpockets, some who are masquerading as beggars, are present in the markets and at the tourist sites. Sometimes they may act overly friendly, placing their hand on your shoulder or back to distract you in order to pick your pocket.

To avoid the risk of theft or confiscation of original documents, the U.S. Embassy advises its personnel and all U.S. citizens traveling to, or residing in, Cambodia to carry photocopies of their U.S. passport, driver's license, and other important documents and to leave the originals in a hotel safe or other secure place. The U.S. Embassy advises citizens not to give their passport as collateral for motorcycle rentals, hotels, etc. Local police rarely investigate reports of crime against tourists, and travelers should not expect to recover stolen items. It has also been reported that some police stations charge foreigners between $20 and $100 to file a police report.

Foreigners travelling to Cambodia should be aware of common scams targeting tourists, often involving card games. [MWP(P1] The Embassy has received reports of U.S. citizens being approached by individuals in public locations, such as popular shopping malls, and being invited to their homes where they end up participating in card games. These are often scams to steal tourists’ money. If you find yourself a victim of one of these scams, you should contact the U.S. Embassy.

Foreigners travelling to Cambodia should be aware of crime targeting tourists involving drugged drinks. The Embassy has received reports of U.S. citizens’ drinks being drugged at bars in order to incapacitate them for theft or sexual assault. Do not accept drinks from strangers and do not leave drinks unattended.

The U.S. Embassy advises citizens to be wary of scams involving individuals claiming they are in Cambodia and need financial assistance from the United States. The Embassy has determined that many of these requests are fraudulent and the individuals making the requests use false identities. In the past year, numerous confirmed media reports of large-scale scam operations have led to a crackdown by Cambodian authorities. These operations have been reported to lure non-Cambodians with false promises of gainful employment. Victims of this false recruitment have then been made to participate in the online/phone-based financial confidence scams.

See the  Department of State  and the  FBI  pages for information on scams.

There have been numerous reports of visitors receiving fake or novelty $50 and $100 bills from ATM machines and banks across Cambodia. When receiving money from ATMs or bank tellers, you should count and examine the money while still in the presence of the ATM camera or bank teller. The fake money typically has a different feel than real U.S. currency and often has markings on the lower left that indicate it is for novelty purposes. If a suspicious bill is discovered, it should be shown to the ATM camera or teller, and the bank should be notified immediately.

The U.S. Embassy advises its personnel who travel to the provinces outside of Phnom Penh to exercise caution outside the provincial towns at all times. Many rural parts of the country remain without effective policing. Avoid walking alone after dusk anywhere in Sihanoukville, especially along the waterfront. You should be particularly vigilant during annual festivals and at tourist sites in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville, where there have been marked increases in motorcycle “snatch and grab” thefts of bags and purses.

If you are visiting Cambodia, you should practice sound personal security awareness by varying your routes and routines, maintaining a low profile, not carrying or displaying large amounts of cash, not wearing flashy or expensive jewelry, and not walking alone after dark. In addition, you should travel by automobile and not use local moto-taxis or cyclos (passenger-carrying bicycles). These vehicles are more vulnerable to armed robberies and offer no protection against injury when involved in traffic accidents.

U.S. citizens are advised not to engage in commercial surrogacy  arrangements in Cambodia. In October 2016, the Government of Cambodia issued an official proclamation banning commercial surrogacy in Cambodia. Please keep in mind that U.S. citizens and other foreigners in Cambodia are subject to Cambodian laws and procedures.

Although gambling and casinos are legal in Cambodia, the U.S. Embassy strongly encourages all travelers to be cautious in choosing to visit casinos or related gambling centers in Cambodia. The U.S. Embassy is aware of numerous reported incidents at casinos throughout Cambodia. In the past year, these incidents such as fires at casinos resulting in multiple fatalities, violent assaults, murders, and suicides under suspicious circumstances have occurred.

Victims of Crime:  Report crimes to the local police and contact the U.S. Embassy at 023-728-000. Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crimes.

In cases of sexual assault, U.S. citizen victims should contact the U.S. Embassy first before contacting local police or authorities.

See our webpage on  help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

  • help you find accommodation and arrange flights home
  • replace a stolen or lost passport

Domestic Violence:  U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence may contact the Embassy for assistance.

Tourism:  The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities do not commonly occur. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities. First responders are generally unable to access areas outside of major cities and to provide urgent medical treatment. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties:  You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Penalties for possessing, using, or trafficking in illegal drugs in Cambodia are severe, and convicted offenders can expect long jail sentences and heavy fines. If you break local laws in Cambodia, your U.S. passport won’t help you avoid arrest or prosecution.

The same rights and protections afforded those accused of a crime in the U.S. are not guaranteed in Cambodia, and the judicial process may be influenced by political, personal, and financial connections. In both the criminal and civil judicial systems, resources devoted to the investigation/discovery and trial process fall far below the standard expected in the United States. Cambodia routinely employs pre-trial detention for those charged with criminal offenses, sometimes for long periods of time before a trial is scheduled. Prison conditions in Cambodia are substandard and overcrowded, with little access to health care or basic nutritional requirements.

U.S. citizens in Cambodia should be aware that there are limits to the assistance the Embassy can offer to those with concerns about due process or the fairness of their trial, as the Embassy is unable to interfere in the legal processes of a host country.

You can be prosecuted in the United States for engaging in sexual conduct with children or for using or disseminating child pornography in a foreign country regardless of the legality of these activities under that country’s laws. Counterfeit and pirated goods are illegal in the United States, and if you purchase them in a foreign country, you may be breaking local law as well.

Arrest Notifications:  If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our  webpage  for further information.

Faith-Based Travelers:  See our following webpages for details:

  • Faith-Based Travel Information
  • International Religious Freedom Report   – see country reports
  • Human Rights Report   – see country reports
  • Hajj Fact Sheet for Travelers
  • Best Practices for Volunteering Abroad

LGBTI Travelers:  While there are no legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTI events in Cambodia, same sex marriage is not permitted. While Cambodians are relatively tolerant toward foreigners, LGBTI Cambodians routinely face discrimination and harassment, especially outside major urban areas. Public displays of affection are generally frowned upon for couples of any sexual orientation.

See our  LGBTI Travel Information  page and section six of our  Human Rights report  for further details.

Travelers Who Require Accessibility Assistance:  While in Cambodia, individuals with disabilities may find accessibility and accommodation very different from what they find in the United States. Currently, except for buildings and hotels that have been built under international standards, most public places and public transportation are not accessible. Persons with disabilities will face difficulties with Cambodia’s sidewalks, rest rooms, road crossings, and tourist areas.

Students:  See our  Students Abroad  page and  FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers:  There have been reports of sexual assaults in the vicinity of drinking establishments and possible drugs being used to incapacitate female travelers. See our travel tips for  Women Travelers .

Water Festival:  During this annual festival, which takes place in November, the population in Phnom Penh increases significantly as millions of Cambodians from every town and province flock to the capital for three days. For personal safety and security, you should avoid crowded areas near the riverfront during the Water Festival holiday.

Customs:  Cambodian customs authorities may enforce strict regulations concerning temporary importation into or export from Cambodia of items such as medications, firearms, antiquities, or ivory. It is advisable to contact the Embassy of Cambodia in Washington D.C. for specific information regarding customs requirements.

Restrictions on Freedom of Expression and Association:  There are freedom of speech restrictions in Cambodia. Anyone who criticizes or insults the King by any means could face between one to five years in prison. This ban includes insults or criticism made online and via social media. The government of Cambodia has used libel and slander laws to restrict public discussion on topics it deems sensitive or against its interests.

Dual Nationality:  Dual nationality is allowed under Cambodia's 1996 nationality law. However, if you have Cambodian nationality and possess another nationality, you may be viewed as a Cambodian citizen in any court proceedings and face stricter sentences.

Business Transactions:  Some U.S. citizens have reported threats of personal injury, extortion, detention, or kidnapping related to personal business disputes, in particular those involving real estate. If you are planning to engage in real estate or other significant financial transactions, please proceed with caution and retain the appropriate legal counsel.

Financial Transaction:  The U.S. dollar is widely used, especially for larger transactions, and most prices are quoted in dollars. Ripped, torn, or stained U.S. bills are not accepted. Authorities encourage greater use of the Cambodian riel, but it is less favored and is mostly given to tourists as change for dollar purchases. The riel is commonly used in smaller towns and rural areas. Credit cards are accepted at some establishments within Cambodia, and a number of banks in Phnom Penh accept credit cards for cash advances. Credit cards are often subject to a service charge. Banks and major hotels accept travelers' checks but usually charge a service fee. Several international banks operate ATM machines that allow travelers to obtain U.S. dollar currency in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and other urban centers. Personal checks are not generally accepted. Several banks serve as Western Union agents, to which funds can be wired, including in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and other provincial cities. Information on Western Union can be found at their  website .

Photography:  Taking photographs of anything that could be perceived as being of military or security interest — including government buildings, military installations, airfields, and bridges — may result in problems with the authorities and confiscation of your camera.

Medical facilities and services in Cambodia do not meet international standards. Both Phnom Penh and Siem Reap have a limited number of internationally run clinics and hospitals that can provide basic medical care and stabilization. Medical care outside of these two cities is almost non-existent. Local pharmacies provide a limited supply of prescription and over-the-counter medications. Because the quality of locally obtained medications can vary greatly, make sure to bring a supply of your medications adequate for the duration of your stay in Cambodia. You should be wary of purchasing local medication. Counterfeit medication is readily available, often indiscernible from authentic medication, and potentially lethal.

Be aware that neither U.S. Medicare nor Medicaid apply overseas.

Medical Insurance:  Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on insurance coverage overseas. Visit the  U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  for more information on what type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

Supplemental insurance  to cover medical evacuation is strongly recommended.

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check with the government of  Cambodia   to ensure the medication is legal in Cambodia. Always, carry your prescription medication in the original packaging with your doctor’s prescription.

Be careful if purchasing off-brand medication from pharmacies in Cambodia. Drugs sold in pharmacies can be fake and possibly dangerous.

Malaria, Dengue and Tuberculosis are serious health concerns in Cambodia. For further information, please consult the  CDC .

Vaccinations:  Be up-to-date on all  vaccinations  recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Air Quality:  Visit  AirNow for information on air quality at U.S. Embassies and Consulates.

Travel and Transportation

Road Condition and Safety:  You should not drive at night in Cambodia outside of city limits. Roads between major areas are adequate; however, roads leading to rural areas are poor. During the rainy season, road conditions deteriorate considerably, and roadside assistance is non-existent. Cambodian drivers routinely ignore traffic laws and vehicles are poorly maintained. Intoxicated drivers are commonplace, particularly during the evening hours. Travel is recommended in daylight between the hours of 6:30  a.m. and 5:30 p.m.  There are also frequent bus accidents.    Serious flooding occurs throughout Cambodia from June through November. Travel on unpaved or dirt roads is difficult after heavy rainfall. The National Route highways are the only roads that can be traveled, with caution, during this time of the year.

Traffic Laws:  In the event you are in a traffic accident, you should cooperate with the police. You should also contact your insurance company for guidance in dealing with the other party and the police.

While in Cambodia, you may encounter road conditions that differ significantly from those in the United States. Traffic in Cambodia is composed of a mix of automobiles, commercial trucks, motorcycles, bicycles, and tuk tuks. As a result of poor roads, driver intoxication, and disregard for traffic laws, traffic accidents are a common occurrence. You should exercise great caution in moving through the country, regardless of mode of transportation.

Public Transportation:  Travelers should exercise caution when using inter-city buses, including those to popular tourist destinations such as Siem Reap and Sihanoukville. Despite the wide availability of moto-taxis, you should not use them due to safety concerns. Be vigilant if traveling by “tuk-tuk” or “cyclo” as personal belongings can be easily stolen. Organized emergency services for victims of traffic accidents are non-existent outside of major urban areas, and those available in major urban areas are inadequate.

See our  Road Safety page  for more information. Visit the website of Cambodia’s  national tourist office   and national authority responsible for  road safety .

Aviation Safety Oversight:  As there is no direct commercial air service to the United States by carriers registered in Cambodia, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has not assessed the government of Cambodia’s Civil Aviation Authority for compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards. Further information may be found on the FAA’s safety assessment page .

Maritime Travel: The Commandant of the Coast Guard has determined that effective anti-terrorism measures are not in place in Cambodia ports and has imposed conditions of entry on vessels that arrive in U.S. ports having visited ports in Cambodia. Mariners and passengers on commercial vessels traveling through the ports of Cambodia should exercise increased caution.

Mariners planning travel to Cambodia should also check for U.S. maritime advisories and alerts at Maritime Security Communications with Industry (MSCI) Web Portal | MARAD (dot.gov) . Information may also be posted to the U.S. Coast Guard homeport website , and the NGA broadcast warnings website  (select “broadcast warnings”).
