Whether you’re heading out on a last-minute, overnight business trip, or a five-day conference abroad, packing for business travel is always different than prepping for a fun vacation.

Your work trip packing list will likely include more electronics and gear. So you’ll need to plan around the extra items and weight.

Also, traditional business clothes are notoriously delicate and wrinkle-prone, so they can be difficult to pack.

This article will break down how and what to pack for your business trip. We’ll cover men’s and women’s business clothing , advice on managing your electronics, and more.

Laptop Backpack

Protect your laptop when you fly.

  • Personal-item-sized
  • Easy to pack
  • Comfortable to carry
  • Built to last

How to Pack for a Business Trip

Carry on plus personal item.

When packing for a work trip, use carry-on-sized luggage plus a personal item that can carry your laptop.

How to Pack Your Laptop for Travel

Pack your laptop in your personal item when you travel, ideally in a backpack, briefcase, or messenger bag with a dedicated laptop sleeve for protection. If you’re using a tote or other bag that doesn’t have a padded area for your laptop, invest in a laptop sleeve to protect it.

If you’re one-bagging, make sure you choose luggage that has a dedicated laptop compartment. Remove your laptop before stowing your bag in the overhead compartment so that you can work during your flight.

Whatever you do, never, ever put your laptop in a checked bag and risk it being broken, lost, or stolen while in transit.

Roll Your Clothes and Pack Them in Packing Cubes

Once upon a time, I didn’t use  packing cubes . And my bag was a disaster. It took long minutes to find the shirt I was looking for or clean socks. Not anymore, thanks to packing cubes.

To look your best, you should fold your clothes along the seams then roll them . Yes, this even applies to most dress clothes. When you arrive, hang your clothes in the closet or even in the bathroom when you shower to release more wrinkles. Your hotel should have an iron for any necessary touchups beyond that.

For maximum organization, use packing cubes and assign each one a purpose. For example, a smaller packing cube holds underwear. A larger cube keeps your shirts organized and wrinkle-free. Then, roll them before zipping them away to make each item easy to find while preventing creases and wrinkles.

How to Pack Your Suit: Fold, Don’t Roll

A traditional, wool suit must be packed properly to keep its shape while in transit. To pack a suit in a carry on , fold it, don’t roll it.

Alternatively, you can try a wrinkle-free suit from Bluffworks or Ministry of Supply ( men’s , women’s ). Wrinkle-free, synthetic fabrics have improved dramatically from the early days of stiff, plastic-y dress shirts.

Stuff smaller, soft accessories like your socks, tie, and pocket square in your shoes to preserve their shape.

Business Trip Packing List

A good business trip packing list is built around a solid core, personalized to your needs and style. “Work clothes” can vary depending on your industry and the nature of your trip. You could be dressed anywhere from a three-piece suit to a shirt and slacks to a hoodie and jeans. Pack and dress as makes sense for your business trip.

Let’s start with the basics.

  • Copy of itinerary
  • Boarding pass
  • Transportation and accommodations

If your business trip takes you across borders, don’t leave home without your passport. If you’re traveling abroad for your business trip, know that some countries won’t let you in without a guarantee of when you’ll leave. Pack a copy of your complete itinerary, including evidence of when you’ll leave the country, to show border security.

After your passport, your boarding pass is your most important document. Mobile boarding passes are convenient, but make sure that you’ll have internet access via your phone if you plan to use one. Or, take a screenshot of the boarding pass and use it offline through your photo app.

For your own convenience, print out the details of your transportation from the airport to your accommodations (if you’ve booked anything), the address of where you’re staying (for customs forms and taxi drivers).

I use  TripIt  to aggregate all of my trip details in one place. Using the app is more convenient than carrying a stack of printouts with me. However, paper copies are better for border crossings and for when you don’t have WiFi access or a local SIM card.

Electronics

  • Phone and charger
  • Headphones or earbuds
  • Laptop and charger
  • Adapter (if traveling abroad)

Carry earbuds if you want to travel light or noise-canceling headphones if you want a quieter trip. For the latter, we like Bose’s QuietComfort line.

The  Macbook Pro  and  Macbook Air  are the most popular choices for Apple users. We recommend the lightest computer you can get that doesn’t sacrifice the performance you’ll need. Dave at Too Many Adapters wrote a helpful guide to  choosing a laptop for work and travel .

  • Eye mask and ear plugs
  • Water bottle
  • Kindle or book
  • Pen and notebook

If you’re taking long flights or overnight trains, earplugs and an eye mask make for all-natural, compact sleep aids.

Get a reusable, refillable water bottle for your travels so that you can stay hydrated without generating the extra trash of plastic bottles.

I’m still old-school and read physical books instead of using a Kindle. Either way, don’t forget a good book to pass long hours waiting or traveling.

Clothes: Business Travel Wardrobe

When packing clothes for a business trip, look for items that pull double-duty and that can be dressed up or down.

Meaning: that black dress looks equally stunning with a scarf for a casual business meeting or a statement necklace for a client dinner. Whatever your personal style is, pack items that make you feel comfortable and confident.

Although the exact items will differ depending on your style and gender, the clothes section of a 3-day business packing list looks like this:

  • 3 tops; 2 dress tops and 1 casual top
  • 1-2 bottoms
  • 3 pairs of underwear
  • 3 pairs of socks
  • 1 set of pajamas
  • 2 pairs of shoes : 1 dress shoe and 1 athletic/casual shoes
  • Workout clothes (optional)

Women’s Business Travel Wardrobe

Use the above business trip packing list template and add the following for a 3-day business trip.

2 Blouses and 1 T-Shirt

  • 1 lightweight t-shirt to dress up or down

Pack two business-appropriate blouses or collared shirts and wear the more casual t-shirt on the plane. I love J.Crew’s vintage cotton t-shirts as they look chic (and feel comfortable) with jeans or slacks.

Everlane has a range of modern, basic shirts that work for both business and casual attire. Their Japanese GoWeave line is especially good for travel since the fabric is durable, wrinkle-resistant, and comfortable.

  • 1 dark-colored blazer or suit jacket

It’s no secret that I’m a huge J.Crew fan. Their women’s blazers fit well, look chic, and last a long time. Consider a wool blazer that keeps you cool in hot boardrooms and warm on chilly airplanes.

If you’re willing to make the investment, consider a wrinkle-resistant blazer, like the Kinetic Blazer by Ministry of Supply , that you can pack without worrying about it turning into a rumpled mess. En route, wear your blazer so it doesn’t get wrinkled in your carry on bag.

2 Bottoms and 1 Dress

  • 1 pair of slacks or skirt
  • 1 pair of dark-wash  jeans , worn on the plane
  • 1  dress (optional)

Opt for  Betabrand’s Yoga Dress Pants  for sleek black pants made from stretchy material like your favorite yoga pants. Alternatively, look at ADAY’s line of pants for a wrinkle, odor, and pill-resistant pair of business travel pants that are technical, travel-ready, and fashionable.

I live in jeans, and even on the dressiest business trip, I’d yearn for a pair. If you’re like me, wear your jeans on the plane. My favorites are Lucky Brand jeans with some stretch woven in.

Love your dresses? Pack a versatile dress like one from  Draper James  or any of the odor-and-wrinkle-resistant merino wool dresses by Wool& .

3 Pairs of Underwear and Socks

  • 3 pairs of  socks
  • 3 pairs of  underwear
  • 2  bras

If you want to hand wash your underwear, you can get away with packing less. However, for a short 3-day business trip like this one, pack one pair per day. Because you’ll save more on time vs packing space.

2 Pairs of Shoes

  • 1 pair of business-appropriate shoes
  • 1 pair of athletic shoes, worn on the plane

Pack one pair of professional shoes that are small, light, and comfortable, like this  pair of classic black heels from Clarks , or a simple and easy-to pack pair of flats or loafers by Rothy’s .

You can wear your heels through the airport, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Instead, I wear a pair of black athletic shoes that I can use for a run or workout at my destination.

1 Set of Pajamas

  • 1 lightweight shirt
  • 1 lightweight, athletic pair of shorts

My favorite packing light secret? Make your pajamas and workout clothes the same outfit. Snag a quick, sweaty workout in the AM and hand wash your clothes in the sink. By the time you’re ready for bedtime, your clothes will be dry and ready for you.

Man wearing backpack at Union Station in Los Angeles

Men’s Business Travel Wardrobe

Use the business trip packing list template and add the following for a 3-day business trip.

2 Dress Shirts and 1 Casual T-Shirt

  • 2 wrinkle-resistant dress shirts
  • 1 casual shirt that’s suitable for after-dinner drinks and on the airplane

Ironing dress shirts is a pain. Instead, opt for a wrinkle-resistant dress shirt (or two), like one from Bluffworks . They are made from 98% polyester (that’s a good thing), have lots of stretch, are breathable, and dry quickly. The best part is that they’re machine washable. Perfect for happy hour or the boardroom in any city you visit.

For your casual shirt, opt for a versatile merino wool t-shirt that will stand up to the rigors of travel.

2 Pairs of Pants

  • 2 pairs of pants and/or  jeans

For a pair of pants that can easily work for business and leisure alike, pack a pair of basic, but high-performance pants, like the good-looking  Outlier Slim Dungarees . If you prefer jeans, try  Bonobos’ Extra Stretch Travel Jeans  which are made from lightweight, 10.5 ounce denim and have a 1% stretch.

Stick to 1-2 pairs of pants and wear your more casual pair on your flight.

Avoid doing laundry on a quick, three-day business trip and, instead, pack three pairs of underwear and three pairs of socks.

1 Blazer or Jacket

Read the full Buyer’s Guide to Travel Blazers for all of our favorites. Or, jump right to our top pick, the wrinkle-free  Bluffworks Gramercy Travel Blazer .

  • 1 pair of dress shoes
  • 1 pair of athletic shoes for workouts (optional)

Think small, light, and comfortable for your shoes. Like the  Lenox Hill Cap Toe Oxfords from Cole Haan  or  Vivobarefoot Ra II.

Packing two pairs? Wear the heavier or bulkier pair through the airport and pack the lighter pair.

  • 1 lightweight, athletic pair of shorts

Woman walking across grey cityscape

5-Day Business Trip Packing List

For a longer, five-day business trip, be prepared to hand wash your clothes mid-trip. Or, have the hotel do it for you. Check with the front desk to see if they offer a laundry service for guests. Make sure to ask how long it will take and the price.

Not keen on doing laundry? Prepare to pack a little more in your luggage. You can still pack carry-on-only for a five-day trip. Some of our customers travel for weeks, months, or years out of just a carry on .

When your clothes get a little wrinkled or smelly, hang them up in the bathroom while you take a hot, steamy shower. The hot, moist air eases wrinkles and smells from your clothes.

What to add to the base list above for a five-day business trip:

  • 2 pairs of socks
  • 2 pairs of underwear
  • 1 blouse or dress shirt
  • 1 casual shirt to dress up or down

Overnight Business Trip Packing List

Ready for a quick, easy packing list for a one-night business trip? Reduce the number of items in your one-day work trip packing list by two.

Pack an outfit, wear an outfit, and add the non-clothing essentials.

What to pack for an overnight business trip:

  • 1 dress shirt
  • 1 casual shirt
  • 1 pair of dress pants or skirt
  • 1 pair of casual pants
  • 1-2 pairs of shoes (one dress pair and one athletic)
  • 1 pair of underwear
  • 1 pair of socks
  • 1 blazer or jacket
  • Book or kindle
  • Notebook and pen
  • Ear plugs and eye mask
  • Travel adaptor and passport (if international)

Steal a page from George Clooney’s well-refined playbook from  Up in The Air  and streamline your airport experience by packing only in a carry on bag . You’ll save time at the airport and feel more confident.

T+L's Top Picks and Tips

When deciding what clothes to pack for a business trip, make sure you have something to wear to every scheduled event while still avoiding overpacking . The key is to bring versatile pieces you can mix and match for various occasions that easily transition from day to night. Also, wrinkle-free materials are always a plus.

Best Slacks

Everlane tencel way-high taper pant.

Our favorite women's slacks for travel come from Everlane. As the name suggests, Way-High Taper Pants have a high-rise waist with side pockets and flattering, professional-looking pleats. Sustainably sourced from wood pulp, the ultra-soft, wrinkle-resistant Tencel lyocell fabric is perfect for packing.

Best Business-casual Trousers

Athleta brooklyn ankle pants.

For something that leans more business-casual, go with the Brooklyn Ankle Pant. These soft, stretchy trousers are comfy enough to wear on the plane yet sophisticated enough to wear to a business meeting or networking event. We also love that they come in an inclusive range of 16 sizes in regular, tall, and petite fits.

Best Blouse

Quince silk notch collar blouse.

Made of 90 percent silk and 10 percent spandex, this blouse drapes perfectly, and has a subtle sheen and a nice stretch. It's easy to tuck into skirts or pants, while the tailored collar elevates any professional ensemble. Best of all, the washable design is nowhere near as delicate as most silk shirts.

Best Sleeveless Top

M.m.lafleur the nora top.

M.M.LaFleur

If you're traveling to a warmer climate or just need more daytime options, this one's for you. The Nora Top is a drapey, boat-neck, sleeveless shirt that promises to resist wrinkling, while an anti-odor finish helps prevent smelly armpits during your next meeting. It also layers beautifully under a blazer and is conveniently machine-washable.

Best Day-to-night Dress

Modern citizen iman cotton twill split-hem dress.

Modern Citizen

The best clothes for business travel transition seamlessly from day to night — that's why we love Modern Citizen's super-versatile Iman Dress. The flattering silhouette is slightly fitted but definitely not too tight, with ruching at the waist and a split hem in the back that ensures you can move around with ease. You can wear this dress on its own, with a blazer, or under a long coat.

Best Sweater

Banana republic bella merino sweater polo.

Banana Republic

It's always good to have a nice sweater on hand during a business trip. We love this one from Banana Republic, which is made of 100 percent merino wool. It features a pull-over design with a folded camp-style collar and a slightly relaxed fit that's easy to tuck into pants, or wear untucked if you prefer a more casual look.

Best Blazer

Spanx the perfect blazer.

Saks Fifth Avenue

Appropriately dubbed "The Perfect Blazer," this versatile outerwear piece from Spanx is just the thing for your next work trip. It's made of stretchy, smoothing ponte fabric and features a slightly longer cut that layers beautifully over virtually any top. The easy-going material is also machine-washable and a breeze to care for — no dry-cleaning necessary.

Best Overcoat

Loft two button coat.

For something a bit warmer, reach for the Two Button Coat. It has a relaxed fit that layers effortlessly over any professional outfit, while notched lapels, flap pockets, and a button closure offer a professional appeal. This coat is also machine-washable, so you don't have to worry about dry-cleaning.

Best Trousers

Lululemon commission pant.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a guy who doesn't prefer these pants over regular trousers — lululemon knows a thing or two about travel pants . And in true lululemon fashion, they're made of a breathable, sweat-wicking, non-wrinkling performance material. But thanks to the traditional fly, belt loops, and snap-button pockets, they look just like any other business-ready pants.

Best Chinos

Bearbottom stretch chino pant.

If the perfect chinos exist, you're looking at them. Woven from cotton with a hint of spandex, these midweight pants are structured and breathable with just the right amount of stretch. The tapered ankle makes them an ideal choice to wear with business-casual sneakers, loafers, Oxfords, or Chelsea boots.

Best Button-down

Untuckit wrinkle-free performance gironde shirt.

If you're looking for wrinkle-proof shirts for business trips, UntuckIt has you covered. Not only does the Gironde Shirt never need ironing, but it also wicks away sweat and is the perfect length to wear untucked with your work pants of choice. You might want something that tucks in for evening looks, but this is undoubtedly a great daytime option you'll be glad to have at the ready.

Best Dress Shirt

Bonobos desk to dinner shirt.

As the name implies, the Desk To Dinner Shirt can be worn all day at business meetings, then into the night while schmoozing with clients over dinner or drinks. The slim-fit design can be tucked into pants or worn untucked for a more laid-back look, and you can count on the collar to stay in place no matter how you wear it — or how long.

Suitsupply Pleated Vigo Trousers

Suitsupply's Vigo Trousers feature a high-rise waist and a tailored, slim-fit cut with a single pleat down the front and modern cuffed ankles. They're formal enough to wear to a nice dinner with loafers and a crisp dress shirt but also versatile enough to rock with a pair of clean leather sneakers.

Zara Stretch Blazer

This straight-fit men's blazer from Zara is great for layering over button-down shirts, polos, crewneck sweaters, or crisp T-shirts. The material is wrinkle-resistant and lightweight, making it a go-to for business trips or wearing on the plane.

Charles Tyrwhitt Cotton Classic Raincoat

Charles Tyrwhitt

This is technically a raincoat because of its water-repellent finish, but it works perfectly as a versatile and lightweight overcoat as well. The hoodless design is made of an extra-stretchy, wrinkle-proof material that's easy to pack and unlikely to stain if you spill coffee or a cocktail.

Shoes take up a lot of space in a suitcase, so you'll want to bring no more than two or three pairs, including what you wear en route to your destination. Think ahead to the meetings or events you'll be attending, consider the formality of each occasion, and prioritize comfort.

Naturalizer Samantha d'Orsay Flat

These sleek pointed-toe flats are more than just flattering and versatile — they're also exceptionally comfy. Boasting contoured footbeds with arch support, cushioning, and full-foot flexibility, they'll keep your feet happy for hours on end.

Best Loafers

Nisolo emma d'orsay oxford.

Nisolo makes our favorite women's loafers. Featuring a feminine d'Orsay silhouette, the Emma is a polished, easy-on loafer that goes with just about any professional attire. These shoes also have cushioned, shock-absorbing insoles, and you can bet the genuine leather uppers will conform to the shape of your feet for the perfect fit.

Marion Parke Classic Pump 45 Leather Kitten Heel

Neiman Marcus

These timeless pumps from Marion Parke can be worn with everything from ankle pants and pleated trousers to pencil skirts and dresses. What's more, the slim silhouette won't take up much space in your suitcase. This footwear brand is expensive, but it's known for its remarkably comfortable styles, each featuring contoured insoles with adaptable cushioning and pressure relief for the balls of your feet.

Best Travel-day Shoes

Vionic slip-on sneaker.

If you need comfortable shoes to wear on the plane but still want to look put-together, Vionic's Zinah Sneaker might be your best bet. The laceless, slip-on design boasts a sleek, laid-back aesthetic resembling a cross between a tennis shoe and a flat. Thanks to the brand's podiatrist-designed arch support, you can bet these shoes won't hurt your feet.

Cole Haan Osborn Grand 360 Penny Loafer

When it comes to men's loafers , you really can't go wrong with Cole Haan. This classic, clean-cut pair features smooth leather uppers and a structured silhouette with traditional stitching. With OrthoLite footbeds, you can count on next-level cushioning, arch support, and antimicrobial odor resistance.

Best Dress Shoes

Allen edmonds park avenue oxford.

Featuring traditional cap toes with six-eyelet laces, these gorgeous leather oxfords are the ideal dress shoes for business trips. While they pair well with a suit, you can also rock them with chinos, slacks, suit separates, and everything in between.

Moral Code Kai Sneaker

For travel days, we recommend the Kai Sneaker from Moral Code. These laid-back yet professional-looking shoes have smooth leather uppers that wipe clean in a pinch, durable rubber outsoles, and padded footbeds that promise to conform to the shape of your foot to keep you comfortable with every step.

The right accessories are crucial for business trips. Still, you want to avoid bringing more than you'll actually use, as overpacking will just weigh you down during your busy schedule. Here's what we recommend.

Nordstrom Marco Burnished Leather Belt

Don't forget to pack a belt for your business trip. Even if you're not sure which outfit you'll need it for, you'll be glad to have it when the occasion arises — plus it takes up almost no space in your suitcase. Consider this classic burnished leather one, and order it one size larger than your typical pants size.

Best Wallet

Leatherology slim zip travel wallet.

Leatherology's Slim Zip Travel Wallet is made of buttery-soft, full-grain leather and comes in your choice of several tasteful hues. It has seven card slots, three bill compartments for things like cash and receipts, and a spacious main compartment big enough to fit your phone, boarding pass, or passport. We also appreciate that it zips up to keep everything secure.

Best Travel Tech Kit

Mark & graham essential tech folio.

Mark & Graham

This clever leather pouch makes it easy to stay organized when traveling with lots of tech gadgets. With multiple compartments, sleeves, and pockets, you'll have a designated spot for your phone, tablet, charging cables, earbuds, stylus pen, important cards, and then some.

Best Portable Charger

Nimble champ portable charger.

"I always travel with a portable cellphone battery charger," Dandashy says. With this in mind, we recommend packing the Nimble Champ. This compact, on-the-go charger weighs less than half a pound and boasts super-fast charging that takes you from zero to 80 percent battery life in just 30 minutes. It can even charge two devices at once.

Best Water Bottle

Monos kiyo uvc bottle.

Dandashy says she always brings a reusable water bottle on business trips. We like this one from Monos, which calls on ultraviolet technology to kill over 99.9 percent of bacteria in your drinking water. We admit this is a lot to spend on a water bottle, but it might be worth it for the built-in purification system, plus it's backed by a two-year warranty.

The best luggage for business trips is lightweight, functional, and professional-looking. Whether you opt to carry on or check your baggage, we strongly suggest keeping your valuables with you, whether in a carry-on suitcase or "personal item" bag .

Best Carry-on

July carry on pro snapsleeve.

July's Carry On Pro was built for business travel. This compact yet spacious suitcase flaunts a crush-proof polycarbonate shell, an extra-long telescoping handle, and smooth-rolling spinner wheels. There's a hidden laundry bag inside, an ejectable USB power bank, and an external magnetic compartment for your laptop that detaches with the press of a button when you need to remove it when going through security. The price is a little steep for the size, but it's backed by a lifetime warranty.

Best Checked Suitcase

Solgaard check-in closet.

For those who want to check their bags, we suggest the Solgaard Check-In Closet. This mid-sized suitcase has a nearly unbreakable polycarbonate shell and a built-in shelving system with five compartments and compression straps that help you pack as much as possible. We like that you can remove and hang up the closet system for easy access during your trip.

Best Packing Cubes

Away the insider packing cubes.

Away is a go-to for high-quality luggage at reasonable price points. Designed to compress your belongings, the brand's Insider Packing Cubes allow you to fit more into your suitcase while simplifying the packing and unpacking process. Made of nylon with mesh panels on top, they're breathable and water-resistant while making it easy to see what's inside.

Best Toiletry Bag

Dagne dover hunter toiletry bag.

Dagne Dover

The Hunter Toiletry Bag is made of water-resistant neoprene with large, smooth-gliding zippers that'll never get stuck. Available in two sizes, this multi-compartment satchel is just the thing for packing and organizing your toothbrush, razor, shampoo, deodorant, skin care products, comb, contact lenses — you name it.

Best Laptop Bag

Calpak haven laptop tote bag.

If you need something to carry your laptop on the plane or to and from meetings, the Haven Tote is an excellent choice. Made of easy-to-clean faux leather, it has a spacious main compartment, a large pocket for your computer or tablet, and three smaller pockets for all the little things you want to keep within reach. "I always pack hand sanitizer, a water bottle, a few packs of gum, and vitamins," Dandashy says. There's also an external trolley sleeve for when you want to slide it onto the handle of your suitcase.

According to Dandashy, the best way to pack a suit is to put it in a garment bag and bring it as your carry-on. This will help you avoid folding it up and having to iron it when you arrive. Of course, this may not always be an option.

"If you must pack it in a suitcase, carefully fold your suit with tissue paper," says Dandashy, explaining that this helps prevent wrinkles and keeps the fabric looking immaculate. "Pop out each shoulder, and fold the suit backward so that the lapels touch. Place tissue paper on either side of the jacket, carefully folding it into thirds." Then fold the pants lengthwise, placing tissue paper in between the folds.

Wrinkle-free clothing materials are usually made at least partially of synthetic fibers, like spandex, nylon, and elastane. This gives a garment more stretch and flexibility, which ultimately prevents wrinkling and creasing. Ponte and other jersey knits also resist wrinkling. If you prefer natural fabrics, consider bamboo-derived textiles or lyocell, which is sourced from wood pulp.

Pre Business Travel Checklist

  • Check and Validate Your Documents: Ensure that your passport, ID, and any required visas are up-to-date and valid.

  • Strategic Arrival and Departure Planning: Align your arrival and departure plans with the purpose of your travel, such as meetings or events. Assess whether arriving the night before or departing the day after is necessary based on your meeting schedule.

  • Efficient Transport Planning: Arrange transport to the airport or train station, considering each leg of the journey. Plan and book transportation in advance to avoid last-minute hassles.
  • Utilize Loyalty Programs: If you are a member of airline or hotel loyalty programs , take advantage of them when making bookings to accumulate points. If not already a member, consider signing up, especially if you travel for business frequently.
  • Fast-Track Your Travel with Programs: Explore programs like Global Entry , TSA PreCheck , or Clear for expedited security processes, making your travel experience faster and more convenient.
  • Consider Trip Insurance: Evaluate the option of trip insurance to provide coverage for unforeseen circumstances, offering you peace of mind during your journey.

Bonus Business Travel Tips

While we’ve covered the essentials, here are some bonus tips to enhance your business travel experience:

1. During Your Stay

Explore local cuisine : When dining out, try local cuisine to immerse yourself in the culture regardless of your business travel destination . Ask colleagues or locals for restaurant recommendations to savour authentic dishes.

Network beyond meetings : Look for events, industry conferences, or local business gatherings during your stay. These can provide valuable connections and insights.

Cultural Awareness : Show respect for local customs and traditions. A small effort, like learning a few basic phrases in the local language, can go a long way in building rapport.

Stay Active : If your schedule allows, find time for physical activity. Some hotels have fitness centres, or you can take a morning jog to energize yourself for the day.

2. Staying Healthy and Safe

Travel insurance review: Before departure, thoroughly review your travel insurance policy to understand coverage for medical emergencies, trip cancellations and lost luggage.

Hydration reminder : In-flight and during your stay, prioritize hydration. Carry a reusable water bottle and drink regularly to stay alert and healthy.

Emergency contacts on speed dial: Save local emergency numbers, including the nearest hospital and embassy or consulate, in your phone for quick access.

3. Expense Tracking Tips

Expense Tracking Apps : Consider using digital expense tracking apps or software to log expenses in real-time. This simplifies the process and ensures you don’t miss any deductions.

Organize receipts : Keep all receipts in one place, such as an envelope or a designated folder in your bag. This makes it easier to account for expenses when filling out reports.

Currency conversion Apps : Install a reliable currency conversion app on your phone to instantly calculate expenses in your home currency. It helps you stay within budget.

Credit card statements : Regularly review your credit card statements online to spot any unauthorized charges or errors promptly. Notify your bank of any discrepancies.

Is travel insurance necessary for a business trip?

Yes, having travel insurance is highly recommended for business trips. It can provide coverage for unexpected events like trip cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost luggage, offering you peace of mind during your travels.

How can I prevent jet lag during long-haul flights?

To minimize jet lag, adjust your sleep schedule before departure, stay hydrated, avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol, and set your watch to your destination’s time zone as soon as you board the plane.

Are there any apps or tools to help me find local networking events?

Yes, several apps and websites can help you find local networking events, such as Meetup, Eventbrite, and LinkedIn. You can search for relevant business or industry events in your destination city.

How can I make the most of downtime during business trips?

Use downtime to explore the local culture, try new cuisine, or relax and recharge. You can also catch up on work tasks, read, or use the hotel’s amenities like the gym or spa to make the most of your stay.

This checklist has covered everything you need, from preparing before your trip to staying safe and tracking expenses. Each journey is a chance to grow and discover. So, pack wisely, embrace the adventure, and make the most of every moment. There’s a lot to consider when planning a business trip. This guide is designed to make sure you’re prepared to get going. Travel for business is easier when you’re prepared.

business travel tips

Planning a business trip is not always fun and games ; there’s a lot to think about. Whether you’re a small business owner, a regular business traveler or a travel manager, it’s sometimes hard to know where to start. You have to deal with searching for the best travel deals, planning the ideal itinerary, and if you’re the one traveling, make a packing list.

Dealing with all that goes into planning business trips for yourself, your boss and your company is no easy task, which is why we’ve created this Business Trip 101 to help you get going. Travel easier and be sure how to plan a business trip after reading this guide.

Get going, travel easier

The more efficient your planning is, the more productive you can be on your business trips as a regular business traveler because you will have a clear agenda and know where your priorities lie. When it comes to corporate travel there is a lot to keep in mind such as flight and hotel bookings, scheduling, ground transportation, checked baggage vs. hand luggage and everyone’s agendas. The more organized you are, the better yours and your team’s results will be.

How to plan a business trip

Planning a business trip can take a lot of work, and part of that is making sure you can balance the business traveler’s mental health (or if you’re the one planning, you have your own wellbeing in mind) as well as the physical needs with the objectives of the company. This is why it’s so important to start with a goal. This way you can see if your agenda is feasible and whether it helps work towards achieving a goal while also following a rhythm that is feasible for the person doing the traveling. If you can, try to have a master planning list that allows you to optimize the time that goes into planning, and then you can more easily replicate for future trips.

1. Start with a goal

If you are looking for how to plan a business trip and stay efficient, we suggest you start with a goal for your business trip . Figure out what you want to accomplish and why you must take a trip to do so. With a goal in place it will be easier to figure out your objectives and then track KPIs related to the trip. KPIs could be the number of new clients onboarded, number of new prospects, number of sales contacts, or goals like designing the Marketing Plan for the following year or simply teambuilding, depending of course on the goal of your business trip.

If you are a regular business traveler traveling for a sales meeting, why not set up several meetings with different potential clients and current clients in the same area to avoid having to travel so frequently? This way you can focus on quality business trips over quantity, which makes them more productive and you will experience less travel fatigue, especially for regular business travelers.

2. Plan travel once and repeat

Sometimes the biggest part of getting anything done is devising a plan. So start your business trip planning by coming up with a travel plan that is easily replicable for future trips. Start by making a list of everything that you need to do to plan and turn it into a checklist. Business travel like any project needs a roadmap to get anything accomplished.

3. create a master business trip itinerary.

Creating standard itinerary for a business trip oftentimes will fall in the hands of an administrative or HR professional, but if one isn’t provided for you, there are some important details you must consider jotting down such as transportation times and details, travel reservation and confirmation numbers, addresses, emergency contact information, check in and check out times for the hotel, day-to-day schedule details (such as what time do meetings start, where and how long do they go), as well as contact information for the people you will be meeting with.

It may seem overwhelming at first but once you have a master business trip itinerary outline it will be easily replicable for your next trip. If you work with a travel management company like GetGoing , you can store all your itineraries and travel documents in one place making managing your business trips as easy as the snap of a finger.

4. Store all business trip-related documents in one place

As we’ve mentioned, when you work with a travel management company, all of your business and trip-related documents will be stored in one place on the web app, including important contact information for travelers, hotel information, emergency contacts, and a support phone number to call in case of issues.

If you are booking all your regular business trips on your own without the support of a TMC, then be sure to have a spreadsheet and shared drive dedicated to your travel plans and itineraries. It will be easier to keep track of everything and ensure nothing gets missed.

Packing and trip lists: lists are your friend

When it comes time to pack for your business trip there is nothing more important than having a list ready with everything you need to start your business travel plans, especially if you’re a regular business traveler. That means having a running list of those elements that you can’t travel without like your passport or ID, your computer, a mouse, a pen and notebook, or your business cards.

Consult our ultimate packing list for more ideas about the travel essentials.

Make a list of all the travel extras

Extras can be things like checking a bag, traveling business class on a flight, purchasing an in-flight meal, having a driver pick you up, and more. The kinds of extras permitted might depend on your company’s travel policy. For example, taking a taxi instead of the bus to the airport may or not be allowed based on the budget per trip your company has in mind, so make sure to check with your travel manager, HR or office manager about what is and is not allowed.

Search for business travel deals

Finding business travel deals is perhaps the most important and time-consuming task when it comes to making your business travel arrangements. If your company doesn’t already work with a TMC, you may consider urging them to sign up for a corporate travel management solutions company who can help you find the best (and most convenient) travel deals .

Some other cheap travel hacks for regular business travelers are:

  • Be flexible with dates
  • Travel in the middle of the week instead of Monday or Friday.
  • Consider traveling via a historically cheap destination to get to your final destination
  • Go with budget flight options like RyanAir, EasyJet or Vueling

Business travel by flight

Business travel by flight is one of the hardest parts of booking a business trip. How can you find the most convenient and shortest route without having to pay an arm and a leg? There is also a fine balance between the amount of time you dedicate to searching for cheap flights and the amount you pay because after all time is money, so you don’t want to whittle away your time to spend a little less.

It’s also hard to know, whether hand luggage is enough for you when traveling by air, whether it’s worth-it to book business or first class (and if your company even allows it). One of the most important things is to familiarize yourself with your company’s travel policy so you don’t find surprises when it comes time to having your travel approved.

Checked or hand luggage only: Is hand luggage enough for you when traveling by air?

So should you go with checked or hand luggage only? Is hand luggage enough for you when traveling by air? Our rule of thumb when is to ask yourself the following questions, which can help you decide whether hand luggage is enough or if you should consider fronting the extra bucks to check a bag:

  • Is your meeting formal or informal? If it’s formal you may want to consider checking a bag so you can keep your suit or blouse from wrinkling.
  • How many days are you traveling for? 1-4 days of informal business travel can easily be packed into hand luggage only. Beyond 5 days, it’s definitely worth checking a bag or if you have to deal with cold weather or different climates on the different stops in your trip.
  • Will you be adding time on for bleisure or blended travel? If you decide to add in extra days either before or after your trip you may consider throwing in a bathing suit to hit the beach or the spa or some extra clothes that don’t necessarily scream “I’m on a business trip.”
  • What kind of traveler are you? If you’re the kind of traveler that wants to throw in your rain boots and parka in case it rains when you’re traveling to Spain that has an average of 50 days of rain a year, then you might consider checking a bag. If you’re a “worst case scenario” type of traveler then just a carry-on will most likely never suffice.

Hotels for business travelers

Choosing the right hotels for regular business travelers is no easy decision. Breakfast or no breakfast? What kind of amenities are non-negotiable? Is it better to be close to the office or downtown? Should you choose a hotel just because they include airport pick-up? There are so many questions to ponder that we’re going to dedicate an exclusive post just to choosing hotels for business travelers. Stay tuned.

Use the right tools for booking hotels for your business trip

Kayak, Skyscanner, Google flights or Hopper are all great tools for your every day trip, but when it comes to business travel, you want a company like GetGoing travel management for businesses that will help optimize and streamline your booking process. The easier trip planning is, the less time you will have to spend planning and the more productive you can be in your daily job.

And that’s how you plan a business trip

Review and refine the process for planning a business trip . To do so, create a short survey that you can share with your team so you can evaluate how the trip went and assess whether the goals of the meeting were accomplished. This is an important step, especially when deciding whether to travel or not to travel for future trips.  The more often you reach your goals and the more your goals are reliant on a trip to meet them, the more it makes sense to travel.

The Ultimate Business Travel Checklist

Over the years, I’ve been on many business trips, and how successful they were almost always came down to how well they were planned.

There’s an awful lot to think about when planning a business trip, from where to stay to what to pack. You also need to prepare for your home and office while you’re absent.

In this article, I cover everything you’ll need to do to set yourself up for a successful business trip, including tips for accommodation, packing, transportation, preparing your home and work space, and purchasing your flight.

While getting to travel on the company’s dime sounds like the Holy Grail of great travel jobs , it can honestly be a lot of work to organize a business trip . Below you’ll find my complete business travel checklist so you’ll be able to plan the best trip possible, and avoid my mistakes!

In this article, you’ll find a:

  • Business Travel Checklist , which covers all aspects of getting ready for a trip other than packing.

Your first steps

First, find out who’s responsible for your travel planning. Some businesses leave all the travel planning and flight booking to their employees, and have you submit your receipts later. Other businesses will handle every last detail of your travel planning (lucky you!) from pickup at the airport, to flights, hotels and accommodation.

Most businesses fall somewhere in between. It can save you a lot of hassle if you find out who’s responsible for what, early on.

Years ago, I had a last minute business trip to Amsterdam where I spent a few hours and a lot of stress trying to find affordable accommodation in the city. It turns out my employer had already arranged a place for me to stay with a colleague. Even if you think you know who’ll plan your trip, ask!

If you’re responsible for booking your flight, and you’re looking to save money, be sure to check out our post on six easy steps for nailing the cheapest flight . o start, we really love getting a quick price comparison on Google Flights (here are a few great tips for using Google Flights ) or Skyscanner .

Check flights on Skyscanner.

If you’re flying regularly for business, be sure to sign up for an airlines loyalty program, and book with them as much as possible. This can translate into some great upgrades and free flights as well as other perks.

Get your work place ready

So you don’t worry about work while you’re away, and to ease your transition back when you return, try to get your affairs in order at your office before you leave.

Make sure you finish the work projects you are currently working on.

Let coworkers and business partners know where you’re going, and how long you’ll be gone.

Set up an out of office email, if necessary.

Prepare the schedule for your business meetings on your trip; you should know exactly where and when each meeting will take place.

Make sure you’ve organized all the important documents for your trip, including the confirmations, copies of your travel documents, presentations and handouts. Print them out, if necessary, and insure they’re saved to a zip drive or on your hard drive. It’s a good idea to back them up to a cloud service (we like Amazon) to ensure that you can access them anywhere in the world.

Prepare your home for when you’ll be gone

Tell your family about your exact itinerary and leave your addresses and contact phone numbers.

Tell a trusted friend about your exact itinerary and ask someone to take care of your family pets and plants while you’re gone.  If you don’t have a friend or family member that can pitch in, consider getting a housesitter. Probably the most well known and largest place to find house and pet sitters is through  Trusted Housesitters .

Check sitters available on Trusted Housesitters here.

Take safety measures, such as locking all doors and windows, turning on the alarm and try to create the illusion that you are at home by turning some lights on or with a radio that has a timer function.

Suspend or redirect routine deliveries such as newspapers or milk, if necessary.

Give the house a quick clean before you leave. Normally, my house is kinda messy and chaotic, but I hate coming home to a dirty, messy house after a trip, so we give it a complete clean before we go. It’s nice to be able to relax a bit when you get back, rather than stress about how messy the house is.

Turn down the thermostat if it’s cold outside or turn it up if it’s really hot. There’s no point warming or cooling an empty house.

Make sure you check with your home insurance to see if you need to have someone check in on your house while you’re gone. Each home insurance policy is different, but many policies won’t cover damages from floods, water leaks, break ins or theft if the house is not regularly attended.

Travel preparations

If you are going abroad, make sure you have all the necessary travel documents.

If you need any vaccinations or medical documents for the country you are going to, take care of that, too.

Get some cash in the local currency. There are ATMs in nearly every airport in the world. however sometimes the lines are long or the machines are down. You don’t need money for your entire trip, just make sure you have enough on hand to pay for the taxi and a bite to eat when you get there.

Look into any specific workplace customs or practices for where you’re traveling. There’s a great article here on business culture in Singapore , and one for Japan here . A quick Google search should help you find others.

World Nomads Travel Insurance

Charge all of your devices the day before you leave on your trip. That way you won’t be caught flat-footed if your plane doesn’t offer outlets or USB charging ports.

Where to Stay

I’ve put these tips near the beginning, because I honestly believe that your accommodation is the most important part of your stay once your dates are set and your transportation is booked.

Start looking for accommodation early. It can be surprising how early accommodation books out. The earlier you start looking, the easier it will be for you to find a good place for a good price.

Look beyond a hotel room. Hotel rooms are often small, impersonal and honestly, overpriced. You’ll probably be surprised at how favorably the price of a fully furnished, serviced apartment compares. Corporate apartments also have the advantage of having essential business amenities like fast WiFi.

For example, corporate serviced apartments are often more comfortable and private than a hotel. Singapore’s well known as being one of the most expensive destinations for business travel in the Asia-Pacific region, making value for your dollar especially important.

Stay close to work. Look for accommodation that is not far from the place where most of your meetings will take place to avoid having to commute in a foreign city. I’m often surprised how bad traffic and subway crowding can be, even during off peak hours.

Make it work friendly. Make sure your accommodation has a work space where you can use your laptop and make phone calls. A small table and chair will work perfectly.

At the airport and in the air

Savvy business travelers suggest signing up for Global Entry and TSA Precheck . Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection program that pre-qualifies you for faster customs, while TSA Precheck will get you boarded faster, as many US airports have special (and faster!) precheck lines where you can skip needing to remove shoes, laptops, liquids, belts or light jackets.

Double check any baggage requirements.  You never know when the rules will change. The USA has even floated the idea of banning laptops in the cabin for all flights that depart, land, or even touch down in the USA.

Try to travel carry on only. Checked bags have a potential to be lost or delayed, adding to your stress. If you can do with just a carry on you’ll be more flexible if there are problems and out of the airport quicker once you land.

If you do check a bag, be sure to keep essentials like your laptop, any business documents and tech, some underwear, and prescriptions in your carry-on bag in case your checked luggage is lost or delayed.

Get a lightweight, sturdy carry on bag with wheels, and carry a personal item as well. You can find more tips on choosing a carry-on here , and our tips for choosing the best business laptop backpack here .

Get clothing designed for travel. If you’re short on space, consider getting a travel jacket or travel gear with hidden pockets or that is wrinkle resistant. We like the SCOTTeVEST women’s trench coat or the streamlined men’s Revolution jacke t.

Stay hydrated on the plane . It’s amazing how much a flight can dehydrate the body. Drink more liquids than normal, and go easy on the alcohol to stay hydrated.

Go to bed normally. Studies have shown that the best way to reduce jet lag is to get as much sunshine as possible at your destination and to sleep normal hours. Tempted to take a quick power nap? Chances are it will just extend your jet lag.

Packing tips

When you pack, use a list with everything you need (see our handy packing list below). Focus on clothing items, toiletries, personal documents, money and banking cards, chargers and the items you need for your business meetings and give yourself time to add and remove items from the list. Try to limit the items you pack to the ones that you will really need.

Tip: Check out our favorite toiletries bags for travel here!

Don’t forget to take weather into account. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve forgotten to check the rain forecast and wished for my handy travel umbrella.

I love packing cubes, because they make organizing my luggage a snap. Check out more in our blog post on how to use packing cubes .

Make sure the liquids in your carry-on luggage (such as your shampoo or your soap) are in bottles that are not larger than 3 oz. (100 ml), otherwise you risk getting them removed by airport control.

Put your shampoo and conditioner, and any other liquids that may leak, in a zip-lock plastic bag. Changes in air pressure on the plane have made liquids come gushing out of bottles more than once on my flights, and the zip-lock bags have saved my clothes from many a spill.

Don’t pack what you don’t need. If you’re certain your hotel will have a hair dryer, shampoo and conditioner, there’s no need to pack these items. If there’s none in your room, ask for one to be brought to you.

Business Trip Packing List

Your business culture will determine exactly what to bring (whether it’s formal business attire like suits or business casual), but these tips should work either way.

Personal items

Credit cards and bank cards

Any other banking or personal ID you’ll need

Business cards to hand out

Find out what business functions you’ll need to attend (e.g., formal business dinners, or giving a presentation) and include clothes for those.

Bring layers, and make sure all your clothes coordinate by sticking to colors and patterns that all mix together.

Shirt. I recommend one top per day, if possible.

Pants or skirt. I recommend one pair for every two days. If you’ve color co-ordinated your clothing, you can get away with wearing a neutral colored bottom at least two days in a row.

Underwear. I recommend one pair per day, if that’s possible, so you won’t need to bother washing them.

Jacket. Check out our favorite  casual women’s hoodie travel jacket here . For more formal business travel, we like the SCOTTeVEST women’s trench coat, men’s travel blazer, or the streamlined  men’s Jacket .

Outerwear. Depending on the weather, you may need extra gear like sunglasses and a sun hat, or a scarf and gloves.

Footwear. Make sure that you pack at least one pair of comfortable business appropriate shoes, as you never know if you’ll have to walk between offices. If you enjoy working out, make sure you bring some proper footwear for that as well.

Pantyhose. I am NOT a fan of these devices of torture, but if you’re in a very conservative business environment, they may be expected.

Tech and business

WiFi hotspot. Hotel WiFi can be unreliable, so we bring our GLocalMe portable WiFi with us wherever we go. I love having internet at our fingertips across the globe, and it saves us a fortune in roaming charges.  Check out our review of GlocalMe mobile WiFi here.

Tip! Too much gear? We understand. Read our article on how to travel lighter with electronics .

Laptop or tablet

Cell phone charger. Consider both a wall plug charger and a portable external battery charger.

Bring noise cancelling headphones. They’re not only fantastic for shutting out the chatty seatmate next to you when you’re trying to work, but they also do a wonderful job in loud hotel rooms, cafes, and new workplaces.

Tip! If you’re looking for a place to work while you’re away, check out our article on how to find the best places to work while traveling .

Plug converter. Depending on the country you’re in, you might need a different electrical plug. To make life easier, make sure all your chargers and devices are usable with 110-240 volts.

Toothbrush and toothpaste

Earplugs. You’ll thank me for this one, whether it’s for the plane or the hotel room. These affordable  Flents Contour Ear Plugs  get great reviews.

See prices and reviews.

Prescription and non-prescription drugs

Skincare products

Electric razor or disposable razor

Spare contact lenses, a case and contact lens solution if required

Prescription for eyeglasses

For women only

Bring your own tampons and pads, or use a menstrual cup like the Diva cup. In some countries, tampons can be especially hard to find, and brands can be quite a bit different away from home. Trust me, as a female traveler, the last thing you want is to overestimate the absorbency of a new product.

Optional extras

If you have the room and want to take along a few extras that’s fine. Here are a few examples.

Wide scarf in your carry on. This can double as a blanket during flight, and a fashion accessory later.

A small first aid bag with items you think you’ll need like pain relievers, band aids and cough drops. It’s never a bad idea to pack Pepto Bismol and Ex-Lax (or, as we call it, the stop and go duo).

Birth control

Voltage converters. We like this  Universal World Wide Travel Charger Adapter .

See prices now.

Tip! Check out our article on How Not to Fry Your Electronics overseas for more tips.

Travel clothes steamer or travel iron

Tide stain remover pen

Lint roller

Small compression bag for laundry

Breath mints. Avoid gum, as it’s considered rude in many countries.

Travel pillow and or blanket

Baby wipes or facial wipes. We always travel with a small pack of these, as they’re wonderful for freshening up before leaving the plane.

Snacks. We often carry small packets of trail mix or protein bars in our carry on. They’re fantastic if airplane food service is sketchy, or if our hotel doesn’t have an affordable minibar.

Thanks for the perfect checklist, Ms Micki Kosman. I use to travel often, but do not know that there is such a huge mandatory checklist to be noted. One tip “earplugs” are some useful tips for a traveller. Your tips on “easy tips for nailing the cheapest flight” were really very useful. Also, the travel Preparation tips were very useful.

You shared very important information and I read it carefully and gain amazing knowledge. Thanks and keep it up.

If I were to go on a business trip, I would make sure to find the right limousine since this will provide convenience. Well, I also agree with you that it would be a great idea to hire a person that will plan the travel. Thank you for sharing here as well the importance of talking to a family member who will take care of my house whilst I’m gone.

This is an awesome blog on travel checklist, very helpful and full of resources that will save you time and money when you travel.

Packing for a Business Trip for a Week, Tips and Hacks!

BannerImg

Packing for a business trip for a week can be a good amount of struggle. Imagine a situation where you thought you packed everything you need and then suddenly when you get down at the airport you realise you forgot your pair of socks or your business cards. Arghh! Irritating, right? We understand. At the same time, you don’t want to overpack and then a lug a heavy suitcase around. Do not worry mate, we’ve got your back!

Firstly, start with organising things. Grab a pen and paper and write your weekly schedule according to days. For example, Monday: meeting, Tuesday: presentation etc. According to that, you can select your outfits like shirts, swimwear, casuals or gym wear. This will give you an idea as to how much you have to pack and where to start from.

Here is a list of things you need to pack for a week of your business travel. Depending upon men and women, or your needs, you can select and reject things from the list. Those can be dresses for men to reject or shaving cream for women to reject. Apart from these gender-based things, everything else is a must for you to carry. The good part is, you need to have just one bag for all these things and you will be provided with hacks to pack too. you can thank me later!

Packing for a business trip for a week: Things to take

1. basic bottoms.

Packing for a business trip for a week can be a hard work. So make it easy for yourself and pack smart. Choose one basic bottom that can go with other outfits too. You can accordingly select tops or sweaters that go with your bottoms. Maybe a trouser or a pair of dark coloured jeans (preferably black because it goes with everything) can help you pack smartly. If you are taking formal trousers, you might need a packing hack for it. (Scroll to the bottom for packing hacks and tips).

2. Top/ Shirt/ Blouse/ Sweater

According to your bottoms, you can select a contrasting coloured top or a shirt or a blouse or maybe even a sweater. Basically, anything that you think will enhance your personality and comfort. You can also keep a formal dress with you and wear it with heels and a good jacket. You can keep an extra pair or two with you if you feel like mixing and matching. Ensure you have just enough tops/shirts to wear with you, not less not more. Allen Solly has some great formal shirts and the fabric is just perfect and soft.

3. Jackets/ Blazers

Packing for a business trip for a week means enough to pack but also packing light. So make sure you select your jackets or blazers according to the bottoms that you have selected and thus make your luggage lighter. This can help you in switching tops so that your outfit looks entirely different. Two jackets/ blazers will me more than enough for packing for a business trip for a week.

Go out and grab some success

4. Casual or dinner outfit

You are packing for a business trip for a week, not every day will there be a business meet or a day for presentations. Also, you might get time to meet people, probably few friends who stay in the same city or you get time for sightseeing. You might even be meeting business prospects for lunch or dinner and not necessarily in an office environment.

You are obviously not going to want to wear your formal clothes for dinner or to meet friends. Make space for some casual clothes in your luggage. That casual attire can be a pretty dress with beautiful and comfortable heels (which is a myth by the way, but whatever), or a button down shirt for men with shorts or chinos. Moral of the story – get dressy and take a break.

5. Nightwear

Obviously, night time is not meant to work. When the night arrives, change into your most comfortable attire possible on this earth; NIGHTWEAR. Your nightwear can be shorts and a t-shirt, pyjamas or a night suit. Keep two of them with you and relax in your room while watching TV or while reading a good book and listening to good music or while EATING!

Drinking tea and reading book

6. Travel Outfits

You might have a long day of travel to reach your destination or to go back home. Be as comfortable as possible while travelling. Let go of those celebrity airport looks. Be as comfortable as you can be. They will not shift you to a business class by looking at your clothes. So, relax! Wear what comforts you.

7. Shoes and Socks

Your list for packing for a business trip for a week has to have enough space for shoes . There are going to be at least two pairs of shoes or even three if you are a girl. For men, derby shoes are good to be worn with formals and loafers are great to be worn with casuals.

Taking loafers along with you has an advantage. They look good with formals too. So you can save some space. Make sure you carry at least two-three pairs of socks that you can stuff into your shoes. For girls a pair of black heels or nude coloured heels will go with every formal outfit, that can be a formal dress or a shirt or blouse, anything. Plus keep a pair of flats with you, just in case you feel like throwing away your heels in the pool the next day or to walk around your hotel or the city when you are done for the day.

8. Carry your hobby with you

You are packing for a business trip for a week. That itself is enough torture. You might want to carry something with you that helps you relax your mind. This depends on your hobbies. Maybe listening to music relaxes you, carry a playlist or an iPod with you. If you are a reader, carry a good book with you or a Kindle. If you like swimming carry your sunscreen and swimwear with you. You will get time after hectic meetings to normalise your mind. Utilise that time by spending it on your hobbies.

Swimwear for easy days

9. Toiletries

You will be staying in office accommodation or a good hotel. You might or might not get toiletries there. Do not risk not taking them with you. These items will not take much space in your luggage. You can also pack them in small bottles and take them along with you. You are obviously not going to shampoo every day, if you do a regular shampoo, stop doing it. Take small bottles with you and pour amounts that are sufficient for a week. A small-sized toothpaste may be. Moisturiser in a small bottle. Make sure everything fits in a medium-sized pouch. Also, carry few zip lock pouches in case your fear spillage.

10. Skin care products

If you have any specification about the skin care products, like aloe vera gel, lip balms, face mist or any other skin care product take them with you for travel.

Check out our skincare recommendations for winters or summers .

Put them in small bags too so that too much space is not taken up and you can utilise that space for packing a few other things.

11. Medical prescription/ medicine/ First-aid

If you have a medical history or travel sickness, DO NOT travel without your medicines. Make sure that you carry a small first aid box that should include bandages, basic medicines for allergies, diarrhoea, vomiting, a pair of scissors and doctors tape. You do not want your business trips to fail miserably.

Never forget medication to take along with you on the trip

12. Travel Documents

Keep your travel documents like hotel reservation, cab booking receipt, travel tickets in a separate file for your quick access. If you have all such documents in your phone, try flagging them on your email for quick reference.

13. Laptop bag

Your laptop bag is your check-in baggage. You can also use it for packing a few things like travel documents or stationeries. Select a bag that is not tough to carry. You do not want to tire your shoulder. Prefer taking a backpack that will stay on your back and keeps you hands-free.

If you want to look stylish, carry a laptop bag with a broad strap that you wear crossways over one shoulder. This makes it more secure and easy to carry. Do change its position from time to time so you aren’t burdening just one shoulder.

14. Phone chargers and Power banks

This is one thing you do not want to miss. Double check, triple check, if possible keep one in your luggage and one in your check-in baggage to be on the safer side. If you forget one while leaving you will have one in one of the bags with you. Also charge your phone completely before leaving for the trip. It has all the important documents that you need on the trip.

Carry a power bank if you have one. If you don’t, it’s not a bad thing to invest in – if you don’t find good charging portals you can always have the comfort of sitting wherever you want to charge your phone. Most power banks have enough juice (when fully charged) to charge your phone up to 4 or 5 times to full capacity. Keep the power bank fully charged before leaving as well.

Power banks should always be kept in your cabin baggage.

DO NOT keep them in the check-in baggage or your bag might never reach your destination (and neither will you if they detain you).

Smartphone charging

15. Stationery

While packing for a business trip for a week, keep all the necessary stationery with you. A diary, a pen (carry an extra one), a planner may be, sticky notes, pencils and paper clips. This will be more than sufficient. If you want to carry anything apart from this, use your democratic right to do so.

If you use your phone, iPad or laptop to keep track of everything then you can do away with these. Still, carry that one pen though.

Notebook and fountain pen

16. Wifi hotspot

While on the trip, you might not get wifi everywhere. Hotels and offices will, but while you are heading towards these destinations, and you wish to add a conclusion slide to your presentation, you would need a hotspot for that. If you are using a mobile connection that helps you do so, go ahead and use it. Or else carry a wifi hotspot with you. Your mobile network can ditch you anywhere. Do not take risks.

Woman using wifi hotspot

Cash, credit and debit cards, identity proofs are always inside your wallet or purse. Forgetting this at home may lead to situations like cancelling the trip and you don’t want that. So never forget to take that along with you. Or to put it in better words, DO NOT LEAVE THE HOUSE WITHOUT IT.

And of course, we’ve already mentioned the things that need to be IN the wallet.

18. Business cards

Business trips are a great chance to increase your contacts and interaction. Always keep your business cards with you and that too in your wallet/purse or pocket from where you can easily access it.

19. Umbrella

Check the weather before leaving for the trip and if it shows rains, keep a small umbrella with you. You should be ready for any sort of emergency. And by emergency I do not mean a broken ceiling, I mean dripping sky. Keep an umbrella with you even if it does not show rains in the forecast.

20. Wet Wipes

Sunny days can be sweaty, keep a pack of wet wipes with you so that you can feel fresh anywhere and clean off the dirt caused by the city pollution. They come in different fragrances and small packaging. It won’t take much space. You can carry it in your check-in luggage or in your purse.

Packing for a business trip for a week: Tips and Hacks

Packing for a business trip for a week means you have to carry many things with you but you do not want more than one luggage. Here are a few packing and emergency hacks for easy travelling.

Store your travel documents on your phone. Store scans of license, identity proofs, air tickets, hotel check-in reservations in your phone. This makes it easier to access them and saves some space in your luggage. If the physical copy of any document is not required, then you’re also doing the planet a favour by not wasting paper on unnecessary printouts.

Check the weather forecast before leaving for your trip. Because of this, you will be able to pack your clothes according to the weather. Plus you will be relieved of not packing extra.

Roll the clothes that are less likely to get wrinkled. Denim and soft fabric will not get wrinkled easily and rolling them will give you extra space.

Keep a dust bag for your shoes. If carrying a dust bag is not possible in case of emergency, put your shoes in a shower cap.

Use hotel laundry services. This will help you carry lesser clothes, and you can wash them and use them again with a totally different outfit by mixing and matching.

Before going into the shower, place your wrinkled clothes on a hanger inside the washroom. After your hot shower, leave the clothes inside and let them absorb the hot steam. After some time, use your hands to remove the wrinkles or a hair straighter will give the clothes a crisp look. If you are staying in a good hotel, they will let you borrow an iron box. Ensure you ask for one the night before your meeting and keep your clothes pressed and ready.

In case you stain your clothes, here are few hacks that you can use on the stains and wash after some time. Shaving cream will remove foundation stains, Salt can remove red wine stains, club soda can remove food stains.

As you might require a blazer/jacket or two, wear one on the flight so it won’t be a hassle to pack – jackets are bulky and take up a lot of space. Preferably, just wear one that will work for the entire duration of the business trip. If not, choose the bulkier one to wear and the lighter one to pack.

Carry a small sewing kit with you. It should contain one needle and small pools of thread in the basic colours – white, black grey – and maybe a colour or two specific to the clothes you carry. Nobody is immune to the occasionally popped button and you don’t want to leave for a meeting like that. And speaking of, whether you are a man or a woman, it doesn’t hurt to know how to sew on a button!

Attention all businessmen! For those extra formal business events and meetings carry a nice tie and some good cufflinks. Attention all business women! Carry some formal accessories (a nice pair of earrings, a statement piece like a brooch etc) for those extra formal business meetings and events.

Packing for a business trip for a week does not need to be a nightmare, just pack smart and take along what you actually need and no extras.

Do like and share the post. Also, let us know in the comments section what have been your business packing experiences and if there is anything we should add to the list above.

Bon voyage!

Top tips on how to plan a business trip

business trip next week

Follow these 6 steps for an effective business trip:

  • Make your travel arrangements well in advance
  • Select your accommodation based on both price and convenience
  • Create an itinerary

Research your destination

  • Remember your electronics, accessories and travel documents
  • Prepare for your meeting

In today’s digital world, we can communicate across different time zones at a moment’s notice. However, when it comes to brokering a big deal or fostering a solid and long-lasting business relationship, nothing beats face-to-face interaction.

Corporate travel is still so important, and it’s equally important for anyone making a business trip to prepare thoroughly. When you arrive at your destination relaxed and well-prepared, you’re better equipped to make a good impression and focus on the purpose of your meeting. Preparation lets your mind focus on the here and now, making sure you stay on the ball in that all-important meeting. If you’d like to fine-tune how you get ready for your next excursion, follow these essential tips to become an effective business trip planner.

Make travel arrangements

Whether it’s your name on the travel documents or you’re a travel manager, planning business travel thoroughly is important. Your first step should always be to familiarize yourself with your company’s corporate travel policy . You’re making travel arrangements for a business trip, not planning a personal or a short break, so being compliant with your company policy is essential.

Next, it’s time to book your travel. This may involve traveling by air, rail, car hire or even boat. Think about the journey door-to-door, balancing travel times against cost and convenience. Visualize the various steps of the trip from A to B. Consider details like how long it will take to move between airport and railway station, the time it takes to fill out paperwork at the vehicle hire company, and whether luggage storage might be useful. Use multiple sources and different comparison sites, researching which companies are offering the best deals. Again, be aware of any budget restraints in your company’s travel policy.

Don’t forget the small details. Does the airplane have Wi-Fi so you can work on the move? Would leaving a day earlier allow you to arrive at your first meeting better rested and prepared? At this stage, the more carefully you prepare, the more confident and relaxed you’ll be when you depart.

Select your accommodation

Preparing business travel is, of course, only half the job. Choosing the best accommodation for your requirements is also essential. If you’ve only got one meeting place to reach, make sure you book a hotel that’s nearby – rather than be swayed by a more luxurious option that might be a stressful 45 minute trip away. Use maps on your smartphone to measure distances from the station or airport to your hotel – and remember the roads and transport networks will be busier at certain times of day.

Check your company’s hotel policies to see if there are any preferred hotels - you might be able to get a good deal too. When considering the cost, make sure you compare rates for similar types of accommodation and make sure you select something that’s fairly priced – some companies even stipulate a cost per day that would limit the choice of hotels.

It’s also a good idea to pay close attention to the amenities at the hotel. Some tourist-focused hotels may serve breakfast too late for your early starts, and as a business traveler you’re likely to want free Wi-Fi, 24-hour room service, plenty of power points for charging your devices. CWT Hotel Intel gives travelers access to trusted peer hotel reviews and can be a handy tool for business trip planners.

Create a detailed itinerary

Your itinerary is your blueprint for a successful business trip. Use it to stay in control of every detail – from transport times and the names of those you’re meeting, to your travel reservations and hotel address. Be sure to allow yourself extra time on your itinerary for relaxing, meetings that have been delayed or overrun, and busy traffic. Consider using a specially designed tool like the myCWT app , which syncs your itinerary with work calendars, and allows travelers to share this with colleagues. This is handy from a communication and efficiency perspective, and as a safety measure if you’re travelling to an unfamiliar destination.

It may be that you’re traveling to a destination you are familiar with and feel comfortable in. Or, you may be entering unchartered territory. If that’s the case, research is essential to avoid unnecessary risk. For example, some cities are well known for pick pockets, so you’ll need to be extra careful when storing important and expensive items like phones in your pockets. Depending on where you’re going, reading up on the current political situation at your destination could also be prudent.

Perhaps you’re traveling to a city or country with a different culture and customs to your own. Avoid looking foolish or, worse, causing offence, by researching the differences in behavior and manners before you arrive. For example, if you’re taking potential clients for a meal, do you know the etiquette on tipping, or when to give people your business cards? Or, if you’re visiting a country where English isn’t the common language, you could even learn a few basic phrases, such as greetings and “thank you”, which could make all the difference when making a good first impression.

Prepare your travel documents

Hours of careful preparation and research will all be wasted if you forget vital travel documents. Traveling between countries requires a current, valid passport, travel tickets and sometimes a visa. It’s key to research whether or not you need a visa as soon as possible, even if you are just transiting through a country, without stepping foot outside the airport. Some embassies can take a number of days or even weeks to issue visas. Even if you’re not traveling to a different country, you may need photo ID to clarify that your name corresponds to the one on the ticket - your passport or driving license are the best options so keep them safe at all times.

Remember your electronic accessories

Stay as productive as possible on your trip by taking a laptop or tablet – it’ll make your travel time really count. Remember to pack the relevant chargers and adapters, too. You can usually pick these up at the airport when you’re passing through, but being prepared is key and will save you time and money in the long run.

Get ready for your meeting

So you’ve followed all the right steps for planning a business trip, but what about your business objectives and the meeting itself? Making a note of what you hope to achieve on the trip can help improve your focus - even if you simply want to reach out to new contacts or gain a general overview of potential new client. Arm yourself with as much information as possible about the people you’ll meet, as well as the places they’ll be. What’s the dress code? If you’re visiting an industrial site, for example, will you need sturdy shoes? If you’re going to be giving a presentation, what format will it take and will your host have the equipment you need? Simply emailing ahead to check if they have suitable screens and cables can ensure you avoid embarrassing delays or confusion that would get your meeting off to an awkward start. That first impression counts so give yourself the best chance of making a good one.

By setting aside the time to prepare, conducting some detailed research and following these business travel tips, you can optimize your chances of a productive and enjoyable trip.

10 Tips For Organizing A Successful Business Trip in 2023

business trip next week

When it comes to business travel, organization is key. By taking the time to plan and prepare for your trip, you can ensure that everything goes smoothly and that you make the most of your time away from the office. Here are ten tips to help you organize a successful business trip:

1. Plan ahead as much as possible

The more you can plan in advance, the better. This way, you can book your travel and accommodation well in advance, ensuring that you get the best rates. You can also use this time to research your destination and create a list of activities or places that you want to visit while you’re there.

2. Keep your itinerary flexible

While it’s important to plan ahead, you should also leave some room for flexibility in your itinerary. This way, if you have any unexpected delays or changes of plans, you won’t be thrown off course. Plus, having some free time in your schedule will allow you to explore your destination and perhaps find some new places that you didn’t know about in advance.

3. Make use of technology

There are a number of helpful apps and websites that can make planning and executing a business trip much easier. From booking flights and hotels to finding restaurants and attractions, there’s an app for just about everything. Be sure to take advantage of these tools, such as business travel management software on Tracktime24.com , to make your trip as smooth as possible.

4. Stay connected.

If you’re traveling for business, it’s important to stay connected with your office. Be sure to bring along your laptop and any other devices you might need so that you can stay in touch with clients and colleagues. Additionally, consider investing in an international data plan for your phone so that you can stay connected even when there are no Wi-Fi hotspots available.

5. Keep your expenses in check

When you’re on a business trip, it’s important to keep track of your expenses. This way, you can make sure that you don’t overspend and end up going over budget. Be sure to save all of your receipts and keep track of how much money you’re spending each day.

6. Don’t forget to pack essentials

Be sure to pack all of the essentials for your trip, including a valid passport, any necessary visas, your laptop, chargers, and any medications you might need. It’s also a good idea to bring along a few changes of clothes and some comfortable shoes, in case you need to do any walking or sightseeing while you’re on your trip.

7. Stay safe

When you’re traveling, it’s important to stay safe and be aware of your surroundings. Be sure to research the local laws and customs before you travel so that you can avoid any potential trouble. Additionally, keep your valuables close to you at all times and be cautious when using ATMs or credit cards in unfamiliar locations.

8. Manage your time wisely

When you’re on a business trip, time management is key. Be sure to plan out your days so that you can make the most of your time and get everything done that you need to. Additionally, try to leave some free time in your schedule so that you can relax and enjoy your destination.

9. Keep your energy up

Traveling can be exhausting, so it’s important to keep your energy up. Be sure to eat healthy meals and get plenty of rest so that you can stay focused and productive while you’re on your trip. Additionally, consider carrying around snacks or energy bars so that you can stay fueled throughout the day.

10. Have a backup plan

No matter how well you plan, there’s always a chance that something can go wrong on a business trip. Be sure to have a backup plan in case your flight is delayed or canceled, or if you get sick or injured while you’re away from home. By having a contingency plan, you can rest assured knowing that you’ll be able to handle anything that comes your way.

11. Try Private!

Our guide is primarily for “regular” business travelers. However, if you’re looking to splurge on your next business trip, you could research the best private jet companies and try flying private!

What are the benefits?

  • Essentially no waiting

How to Start Planning a Business Trip

When planning a business trip, there are a few things you should keep in mind to make sure the trip is successful. First, you need to have a clear purpose for the trip. What are you hoping to accomplish? Once you know the purpose, you can start to plan the details of the trip. Who needs to come along? What meetings or events do you need to attend? What kind of budget do you have to work with? Keep these factors in mind as you begin to plan your trip.

Another important tip is to make sure you allow enough time to plan and prepare. Don’t try to cram everything into the last minute. Start planning as soon as possible so you can book flights and hotels in advance and have time to take care of any other details.

Finally, make sure you bring everything you’ll need on your journey. This includes your business materials, clothes, and any personal items you might need. By being prepared, you can avoid any stressful situations that might arise while you’re on the trip.

What not to do on a business trip

There are a few things you should avoid doing on a business trip in order to make sure it is successful. First, don’t try to cram too much into one trip. Trying to do too much can be overwhelming and lead to mistakes being made. It’s better to focus on a few key objectives and accomplish those rather than trying to do everything at once.

Another thing to avoid is overspending. When you’re on a business trip, it’s easy to let the expenses add up. However, it’s important to stick to your budget in order to avoid going into debt or putting your company in a difficult financial situation. Be sure to track all of your expenses and stay within your limit.

Finally, don’t forget to take care of yourself while you’re on the trip. Business trips can be exhausting, so make sure you get plenty of rest and eat healthy meals. Additionally, try to leave some free time in your schedule so that you can relax and recharge. By taking care of yourself, you’ll be able to stay focused and productive throughout the trip.

Travel essentials for business trips

There are a few essentials you should never forget to pack when traveling for business. First, be sure to bring along your laptop or tablet so you can stay connected and productive while you’re on the go. Additionally, pack any business materials you might need, such as business presentations or reports. You’ll also want to make sure you have the proper clothing for any meetings or events you’ll be attending. Finally, don’t forget to bring your passport and any other necessary travel documents. By being prepared, you can avoid any stressful situations that might arise while you’re on your trip.

Researching before going to a new place for business

When planning a business trip, it’s important to do your research in order to find the best possible destination for your needs. First, consider the purpose of the trip. What are you hoping to accomplish?

Once you know the purpose, you can start to narrow down your options. If you’re looking for a place to hold meetings and events, you’ll want to find a destination that has good infrastructure and plenty of hotel and conference space. If you’re looking for a place to network and build relationships , you’ll want to choose a destination with a vibrant business community.

Once you’ve narrowed down your options, take some time to read up on each potential destination. Look at travel guides, read articles, and see what other business travelers have to say. By doing your research, you can ensure you choose the best possible destination for your needs.

Business trips can be stressful, but by following these tips, you can ensure yours is successful. Remember to start planning early, pack everything you need, and take care of yourself while you’re on the trip. Additionally, be sure to do your research before choosing a destination. By being prepared, you can make sure your business trip is a success.

What to Pack for a Business Trip: A Men’s Guide to Work Travel Wardrobes

If you’re headed out on a business trip, the last thing you want to worry about is packing. You want to focus on growing your business or career.

The best way to accomplish this? Systemize the way you pack.

With a go-to approach for how and what to pack for a business trip, you won’t sweat the small stuff.

We’ve put together strategies for men on how to pack for a business trip and what to bring as well. Follow these simple steps to prep you for your next out-of-town event.

How to Pack for a Business Trip: Pointers for Men

men's suitcase being packed for a business trip

Have you ever wrestled with your suitcase, trying to jam-pack it with everything you need? Or have you shown up to your location under-packed and underprepared?

The reason many men run into these issues is that they don’t have the right pieces in their closets. Before we get into how to pack for a business trip, we have to start with your wardrobe.

At Next Level Wardrobe , we have a proprietary style system that we use on all our clients:

  • Focus on core colors
  • Invest in essential pieces
  • Get the perfect fit

Why did we design this system this way? To help clients get the most out of their clothing and to bring confidence and intentionality to how they dress. The more versatile and streamlined your clothing, the easier it is to pick out what you need for your travels.

Once you’ve taken care of that, we can get into how to pack your suitcase for a business trip.

How to Pack Your Suitcase for Work Travel

View this post on Instagram A post shared by NY + LA Personal Stylist (@nextlevelwardrobe)

Our founder, Cassandra Sethi always knows what to pack for a business trip.

She uses the same packing system every time. This method works no matter the trip length. She even recently used it on a six-week trip for her and her husband. Here’s a breakdown for you to follow:

  • Start by laying out all your items to pack. Consult your itinerary and think about what outfits you’re going to need for what events. Identify when you can repeat an outfit or piece.  The best way to have a limitless outfit rotation is to focus on core colors: black, white, grey, and navy. They always go together, and they’re cornerstones of professional wear.
  • Begin packing your pants. Fold each pair in half to cut down on wrinkles and to keep your pants flat.
  • Collect any knit (aka T-shirt material) shirts and roll them. This method is a space saver and perfect for casual shirts because you don’t have to stress about wrinkles.
  • Grab your sweaters and button-down shirts and fold them as usual. Again, aim to keep them flat and crisp to maximize space and avoid wrinkling. Take those pieces and lay them over the rolled tops.
  • Pack your shoes in a shoe bag. This is KEY. Do you really want whatever you’ve been walking on all day all over your nice clothes? We can’t tell you how many times we’ve seen people do this and it needs to stop. You can use anything from a drawstring pouch to a travel case to an old shopping bag.
  • Just like we don’t want shoes rolling around, we want toiletries all in one place too. Keep them in a travel kit like this one we love from Amazon. Place them next to your shoes or in a zip compartment for easy access.

You can watch all of this in the above Instagram reel as well.

That’s the basics of how to pack for a business trip. But for menswear, one thing’s missing: suits.

How to Pack a Business Suit for Travel

If you’re debating what to pack for a business trip, a suit may be just what you need. Especially for formal settings.

The truth is, the only way to truly avoid wrinkles is to use a garment bag and hang your suit. If you’re traveling by car, this is a no-brainer. Simply hang the suit from one of the grab handles in the back of the car.

If you’re flying, you’ve got a couple of options. One is to fold your garment bag in half carefully and place it in the overhead compartment. The other option is to see if your airline has closets at the front of the plane. Then you can ask your flight attendant if you can store your suit there until landing.

If a garment bag isn’t an option, here’s a suit folding method that Brooks Brothers recommends.

First, lay your suit jacket face down. Then, fold one of the shoulders back. Take the other shoulder and turn it inside out. Take the shoulder you folded back and tuck it into the inside-out one. Fold the suit jacket in half vertically and then horizontally.

If you have a plastic hanging bag from a dry cleaner, place the jacket inside for extra protection.

Finally, place the jacket in the center of your suit trousers that you’ve folded in half lengthwise. Fold the trousers over the jacket and you’ve got the ideal suit bundle to place in your luggage.

What to Pack for a Business Trip: Our Men’s Clothing Packing List

Deciding what to pack for a business trip depends a lot on where you’re going, when, and for how long. The packing list possibilities are endless so we can’t give you a list for every scenario.

But we can give you a place to start for every dress code.

Picture a 3-day trip in the fall with daytime meetings and 2 dinners in the evening. From formal to business casual to true casual, here’s a run down on what to pack.

What to Pack for a Business Trip: Business Formal Attire

What to Pack for a Business Trip: Business Casual Attire

What to Pack for a Business Trip: Casual Attire

Casual attire business trip packing should include:

What to Pack for a Business Trip: The Best Men’s Accessories, Miscellaneous Essentials to Pack

business trip next week

The above lists should have you set on what to pack for a business trip. But to fill in the gaps, there are a few items that should make the cut as well.

For example, a belt is a must for all trousers. We recommend only bringing one and opting for dark brown. This shade is versatile and neutral while feeling more contemporary than the classic old-school black belt.

Another essential is travel-sized toiletries to keep in your toiletry bag. This way, you won’t worry about shopping once you land and you’ll have all your favorites on hand.

When heading to a formal event, bring along cuff links and a tie. You can always roll the tie and easily fit it into your suitcase.

Finally, we often get clients asking about bringing workout clothes on their trips. If staying active is part of your routine, keep it light. Bring 2 bottoms and 3 shirts.

What to Pack for a Business Trip: FAQ

business trip next week

If you’ve got any nagging questions about what to pack on a business trip or how to pack for a business trip, keep scrolling for our travel FAQs.

How do avoid under-packing or overpacking?

We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again: owning the right clothes is the best way to avoid packing dilemmas. Get ahead of your next trip and conduct a closet clean-out .

You should only be left with the clothes you actually love and wear. If you notice any gaps in your wardrobe, put together a shopping list and only buy those must-haves. From there you’re packing path is clear.

This is my first business trip or my first with a new company. How do I figure out the dress code?

Honestly, your best bet is to ask someone. Check with a peer who’s attended this type of event before or ask your boss. You can also Google images of past attendees if you’re headed to a conference or summit.

If you’re still confused about the dress code, follow your office’s dress code. And if your office doesn’t have a dress code, start here .

Any suitcase or luggage recommendations?

We’re big fans of the brand Tumi . They’ve got options for every type of packer from backpacks to carry-ons to full-sized luggage. Sleekly designed, Tumi luggage also comes with an incredible warranty that covers most damages during the first few years.

What about shoes? They take up so much space, how can I choose the right ones to bring?

Looking over our packing lists, you probably noticed we didn’t go wild with shoes. That’s because, for your average business trip, you don’t need that many.

business trip next week

The key is to purchase neutral, versatile shoes that can pull double-duty. Like these brown oxfords from Cole Haan. Partner them with trousers and a dress shirt for daytime meetings. Then change out your shirt for a cable-knit sweater for a dinner out.

The above shoes are perfect for formal or business casual. If you’re in a casual environment you can wear a luxe pair of sneakers (not Allbirds please!)

Is there an easy way for me to not have to iron everything? I won’t have the time.

One of the reasons we recommend our suitcase packing method is because it cuts down on wrinkles. If you follow that method, you shouldn’t have extra ironing and pressing to do once you get to your destination.

If you’re really worried about wrinkles, wrap your more delicate items in a plastic bag. This adds another barrier between your clothes and other items that might leave indents. Also, try to avoid packing those crease-prone items too tightly since that’s more likely to leave marks on your clothing.

5 Out of Office Examples for Traveling on a Business Trip

This post may contain affiliate links, meaning that we will receive a commission if you click through and make a purchase. All opinions are those of the author.

Photo Setting an Out of Office Message for Traveling on Business

When you need to travel for work, you might need to set an out of office message. Out of office messages are useful if you are not available during regular work hours. This may be necessary if you are out of the office in transport, such as on an airplane without WiFi, or if you are participating in a conference and cannot be online.

Out of Office Message Requirements

Your out of office message can be as detailed as you would like, but there is one requirement for your auto reply email: state when you will be back. You do not  need to explain why you are away, however you should at least communicate when you will be able to respond to your emails. Otherwise, you can be as creative as you would like.

A typical business travel out of office email will have the following components:

  • Thank the person for their email.
  • Let the person know when you will be returning.
  • Provide an alternate contact person or emergency contact number.
  • State that you will respond to emails when you return.

Additional components of your out of office message could include:

  • Whether you are checking your email, versus if you are out of the country
  • Why you are currently out of the office

See some of our business trip out of office messages below.

Out of Office on a Business Trip

If you are out of the office on a business trip, you can state so in your auto reply message. If you are traveling for a client, you do not want to get too specific on the location. Instead, leave your email vague. Put your location on your corporate calendar. If your coworker needs to know where you are, they can check your calendar for details.

Thank you for your email. I am currently out of the office on a business trip, and I will be returning on [Date]. I will respond to your email upon my return. Sincerely, Michelle

The above should be the bare minimum included in your auto reply message. If there is the possibility of urgent matters coming up while you are gone, you should include a contact person or an emergency contact number in your message as well.

I am currently out of the office on a business, and I will be returning on [Date]. If your matter is urgent, please contact [Name] at [Name’s Email], or call me at [Number]. Otherwise, I will respond to your message when I return. Thanks, Michelle

Only include your phone number in your out of office message if you do not mind being reached. If you are traveling to a place without service or will be unable to talk, it is best to only leave a contact person.

Out of Office during Business Travel

Occasionally for work, you may find that you are in commute for an entire day and will have limited access to email. If many of your coworkers will wonder where you are, it may be ideal to set up an out of office message for business travel.

I am currently traveling with limited access to email. If you need immediate assistance, please contact [Contact]. Otherwise, I will respond to your email as soon as possible. Thanks, Michelle

You might also be traveling to work, but find yourself at a client with a poor Wifi connection. While you are working, many of your coworkers may be wondering why you do not appear online, or why you are taking longer than usual to respond. In these circumstances, you might want an auto reply message similar to the following:

I am currently on-site with limited access to Wifi. If your matter is urgent, please contact [Contact] or call me at [Number]. Thanks, Michelle

Out of Office Attending a Conference

If you are on a conference business trip, mentioning the conference in your out of office can be beneficial. If a client who is also attending the conference emails you, your client may notice the opportunity to meet up with you.

Thank you for your email. I am currently at the Tableau Conference in Las Vegas, with limited access to email. I will be returning on [Date]. If you need immediate assistance, please contact me on my cell at [Number]. Sincerely, Michelle

Auto Reply Messages for Business Travel

Depending on your company culture, your out of office messages may be more casual or fun. However, if you work in professional services, it is best to keep your auto reply messages as fluff-free and simple as possible. State that you will be out, say when you will be back, and include what to do if it is an emergency.

Governor Healey outlines trade trip stops in Italy

B OSTON (SHNS) – Gov. Maura Healey’s trip to speak at a Vatican climate summit next week will include an audience with the pope, but the governor also plans to tend to the Bay State’s business ties with Italy while she’s there.

The governor’s Italian itinerary starts in Rome with an American Chamber of Commerce in Italy roundtable on Tuesday, May 14. Healey will host Italian business leaders who are thinking about establishing or expanding a footprint in Massachusetts, her office said, and she will “highlight all that makes Massachusetts a great place to do business, learn more about what the businesses are interested in and the challenges they face, and discuss opportunities for further collaboration.”

Italy is Massachusetts’ 10th-largest global trading partner, with a total of $2.05 billion in trade between the state and country in 2023, Healey’s office said. The administration highlighted Italian companies that maintain operations in Massachusetts, including Enel North America and Piaggio Fast Forward. Healey will also connect Tuesday with U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See Joe Donnelly, a former Democrat member of Congress from Indiana.

“I’m excited for this opportunity to showcase Massachusetts’ climate and economic leadership on the global stage, and to make the case for why businesses should consider starting and growing in our state,” Healey said. “Massachusetts deeply values our close relationship with Italy and the Vatican City State, and we see this trip as an excellent opportunity to strengthen ties and strategize on future opportunities for collaboration.”

Traveling with Healey will be Climate Chief Melissa Hoffer, Director of Operations Ellie Hitt, Director of Scheduling and Senior Executive Assistant Katharine Thibodeau and Press Secretary Karissa Hand. The delegation’s expenses are expected to be paid through the Massachusetts Tourism Trust Fund, which allocates funds to the Massachusetts Marketing Partnership, Hand said. The MPP includes the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism and the Massachusetts Office of International Trade and Investment.

Next Wednesday morning, Healey will give a keynote address at the opening session of the  Vatican Climate Summit  focused on “governing in the age of climate change” and plans to make news. Her office said the speech “will highlight Massachusetts’ global climate leadership, particularly in the emerging industry of climatetech, and announce a new initiative to grow the climate workforce.”

Later that evening, she will co-chair the summit’s energy session and deliver introductory remarks for panels on the renewable energy transition, access to clean and affordable energy, grid resilience, and clean cooking. Her co-chair is Cheikh Mbow, the director general of Centre de Suivi Ecologique in Senegal and an adjunct professor at Michigan State University.

Hoffer has plans Tuesday to visit the Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research, and to meet with the director of Rome’s Climate Office as well as with environment, science, technology and health personnel from the U.S. Italian Embassy. She will deliver a “report from the front lines” to the climate summit Wednesday afternoon.

Thursday morning, Healey will participate in a “Highlights and the Way Forward” event, which her office said will end with proposals from all mayors and governors on next steps.

The climate summit is organized by the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences under the leadership of University of Massachusetts Boston Chancellor Marcelo Suárez-Orozco and Ram Ramanathan, a renowned researcher who discovered the greenhouse gas effect of halocarbons in the 1970s. Pope Francis, who called climate change “a global social issue and one intimately related to the dignity of human life,” will preside over the conference.

Healey, who has  previously identified herself  as Catholic, will get an audience with Pope Francis early Thursday morning along with Wu, the governor’s office said. Francis is the first Catholic Church leader from the Americas and he has connections to Massachusetts by virtue of his close relationship with Boston Archbishop Cardinal Sean O’Malley.

The 79-year-old O’Malley told the Boston Globe earlier this year that he expects to leave his post “soon,” noting that he handed his resignation to the pope five years ago as is required of bishops turning 75. The 87-year-old Francis would appoint O’Malley’s successor as head of the church in the Boston area.

News & features, winter center, news / severe weather, northeast texas at risk for renewed flooding as more heavy rain eyes southern us.

There is the potential for another foot of rain to fall on parts of northeastern Texas next week, prompting renewed flooding, while other portions of the southern United States will see rising rivers and streams.

By Alex Sosnowski , AccuWeather senior meteorologist

Published May 9, 2024 8:39 AM PDT | Updated May 9, 2024 12:36 PM PDT

Flash flooding has become a major threat to areas impacted by severe storms this week.

Storm clouds gathered and unloaded tremendous rainfall that triggered flooding in northeastern Texas multiple times this spring. Unfortunately, the atmosphere will hit the replay button into mid-May with more rounds of rain coming. That will renew flooding in some areas and trigger flooding in places that have dodged surging waters, AccuWeather meteorologists warn.

In northeastern Texas, in much of the zone from Interstate 10 to I-20, rainfall has been 150 to 300% of the historical average, and much of the 10-20 inches of rain that have fallen in this area fell over a few days.

The rainfall triggered flash flood emergencies and moderate to major flooding along the Navasota, Trinity, Sabine, Brazos and Neches rivers, to name a few. While most rivers in the region have crested, some near sea level were still surging heading into the end of the week. Regardless, many streams and rivers will remain high as additional rounds of rain line up.

A batch of drenching thunderstorm downpours will advance eastward along a cool front across the Southern states before the end of the week.

The downpours can trigger localized flash flooding from northeastern Texas Thursday night to parts of Georgia, Florida and South Carolina into Friday morning.

A couple of days of dry weather will follow for much of the Southern states into part of Mother's Day weekend. However, it will not be enough to prevent new flooding as heavy rain returns to the region from Sunday through the middle of next week.

An area of low pressure, or a storm, will form over central Texas on Saturday night and travel eastward along the upper Gulf coast from Sunday to Tuesday. This track has trended farther to the north, as AccuWeather meteorologists warned it could do. That more northerly track will put the area of heaviest rain in the zone from I-10 to I-20 from northeastern Texas to the Atlantic coast.

Within this region, a general 2-4 inches of rain will fall, with local amounts of 4-8 inches possible. In much of this area, soil conditions will range from moist to saturated following prior rain events, some as recent as Thursday night. Because of the wet state of the ground, not all of the rain will be absorbed, and runoff will quickly find its way into area small streams and low-lying areas and then work into area secondary rivers and bayous.

Those living along waterways prone to flooding should be prepared to seek higher ground. This could mean a second flooding event in northeastern Texas in less than a week. In addition to rivers in Texas that could be subject to a new surge of water, other rivers farther to the east, including the Red, Pearl, Yazoo, Tombigee, Alabama, and Chattahoochee, could be subject to flooding.

Rain early next week will be followed by yet another dose of downpours over the South Central and Southeast states from the middle to late parts of next week. A storm will push out of the southern Rockies and onto the southern Plains at midweek before it pushes eastward across the lower Mississippi Valley and the Appalachians.

business trip next week

In areas where the new round of rain overlaps with the rain at the start of the week, flooding problems could be made even worse as there will probably be too little time between the rain rounds to allow for waters to recede.

There is the potential for some areas to receive a foot or more of rain from Sunday to Wednesday night in the South Central states and from Monday to Saturday in the Southeast region.

business trip next week

While some of the rain will reach areas needing moisture in central, southern and western Texas and parts of central Florida, not all of these areas may pick up enough moisture to alleviate abnormally dry to drought conditions.

When is Amazon Prime Day 2024?

Is Prime Day an international event?

Amazon prime day 2024: here's what to expect, tips, and tricks.

When you buy through our links, Business Insider may earn an affiliate commission. Learn more

Amazon Prime Day has grown into one of the biggest sales events of the year, with discounts rivaling those of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. With so many retailers selling on Amazon, Prime members can save on just about anything, from viral beauty products to new unlocked smartphones.

The best Prime Day deals we saw last year included all-time lows on brands like Apple, Vitamix, iRobot, Dyson, Crocs, and, of course, Amazon-owned products like the Fire TV , Kindle e-reader , and Echo smart speakers . We expect to see more of the same this year as well.

It'll be the first major deal holiday of the year, so it's an awesome chance to score summer discounts on big-ticket items and household staples. The retailer's 10th Prime Day event has officially been announced to arrive in July, but the actual days are still unknown. In the meantime, we're keeping tabs on all of the latest Prime Day news, and we'll keep you updated with our findings here.

  • Shop the latest deals at Amazon

Amazon Prime Day is officially coming this July, though the exact days have not yet been announced. In past years, it kicked off on the second Tuesday of the month. If Amazon follows the same trend, it will take place on July 9 and 10. We'll keep this story updated as more details are announced.

Amazon Prime Day is the retailer's annual mega sale and one of the major benefits of Prime membership. It's a two-day sales event, usually during the summer, that features products from every category, from fashion staples to hot new tech.

Though it used to be a deal holiday of a much smaller scale, Prime Day has grown exponentially since the first one in 2015. Now, you can find almost everything on sale for all-time low prices, matching discounts we see during Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

What should I buy during Amazon Prime Day?

Everything is fair game to buy during Amazon Prime Day. Whether you've been holding out on a pricey new TV or just need to stock up on toiletries, Prime Day is a good time to make your move.

Last year, we saw incredible prices on tech, including 4K TVs , Fire TV streaming devices , Apple products, Kindle e-readers , PC gaming accessories, Echo smart speakers , and top headphones picks. Prime Day tech deals featured brands like Logitech, Bose, Jabra, Sony, Roku, Samsung, TCL, and more.

If you're looking for style and beauty deals during Prime Day, last year, brands like Tommy Hilfiger, Tatcha, Laneige, Levi's, Carhartt, Anastasia Beverly Hills, Adidas, and Marc Jacobs all featured products at rare low prices. That means skincare, makeup, shoes, men's clothing, women's fashion, and accessories will all be available for less.

Home and kitchen products saw no shortage of Prime Day deals either, with big names like Dyson, Shark, iRobot, Philips, KitchenAid, Nespresso, Casper, Leesa, and OXO down to all-time lows for the event. So, whether you need an air fryer , robot vacuum , mattress , or just some sturdy mixing bowls, Prime Day is a good time to buy.

You don't need to be focused on fancy new gadgets or treatments to shop smart during Amazon Prime Day either. We also catch tons of affordable household essentials available for even less every year, like toilet paper, dish soap, doggy bags, and makeup wipes. These deals are sweet, since they save you money on stuff you needed to buy anyway.

How long do Prime Day deals last?

How long a Prime Day deal lasts differs between items, but in general, the best discounts will start during the event and end before the 48-hour holiday is over. Some will last the whole two days while others will only last one, so it's always wise to act on a good sale when you see it. Lightning deals especially go fast, the most popular of which dwindle away in less than an hour.

I always recommend buying a product you've had your eye on as soon as it's highlighted as a Prime Day deal. Regardless of how long it's set to last, oftentimes the best sales run out of stock, resulting in shipping dates being pushed out, or the deal no longer being offered at all. We'll be providing all of the deal context you need to shop confidently and quickly, so be sure to check our roundups of the best discounts when the event rolls around.

Do you need to be a Prime member to shop Amazon Prime Day?

Amazon Prime Day is locked to Prime members only. It's one of the major benefits of subscribing to the service, in addition to other perks like free two-day shipping and Prime Video streaming.

If you have yet to become a member, you can sign up for a free 30-day trial to test it out. Once the official Prime Day dates have been announced, you can even time your free period to overlap with the sale, but it's not a guarantee since sometimes retailers will lock out free members from shopping the best deals.

Do other stores participate in Prime Day?

Although Prime Day is an Amazon-specific event, it's grown so large that other major retailers have started kicking off competing sales to overlap with it. No one has announced a competing Prime Day sale just yet, but if past years are any indication, Walmart, Target, and Best Buy will likely be holding their own events.

These are definitely worth checking out; they often match the best deals on popular items you can find from Prime Day. We'll also be rounding these deals up so you can shop from the retailer that best suits you, whether you're a Target Circle cardholder, My Best Buy Plus member, or Walmart Plus subscriber.

Prime Day occurs in several other countries, but not all of them. Here's a list of countries where Prime Day will be available to shop:

  • Netherlands
  • Saudi Arabia
  • The United Arab Emirates
  • The United States
  • The United Kingdom

Want to see what Amazon has on sale right now? We've spotted some hefty price cuts on electronics, fashion, home, kitchen, laptops, and more on its main deals page .

Senate Approves Bill to Reauthorize F.A.A. and Improve Air Travel

The Senate also passed a short-term extension of the current F.A.A. law to give the House time to clear the longer-term package early next week.

Reporting from the Capitol

The Senate on Thursday passed legislation to reauthorize federal aviation programs for the next five years and put in place new safety measures and consumer protections for passengers, at a moment of intense uncertainty and disruption in the air travel system.

The bill , which still must win final approval in the House before becoming law, would provide more than $105 billion to the Federal Aviation Administration and another $738 million to the National Transportation Safety Board for airport modernization, technology programs and safety. It would also bolster the hiring and training of air traffic controllers, codify airlines’ refund obligations to passengers, ensure fee-free family seating and strengthen protections for passengers with disabilities.

“Aviation safety has been front of mind for millions of Americans recently, and this F.A.A. bill is the best thing Congress can do to give Americans the peace of mind they deserve,” Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the majority leader, said on the Senate floor on Thursday evening.

It passed in an overwhelming bipartisan vote of 88 to 4, just one day before the current law is scheduled to lapse. The Senate also unanimously approved a short-term extension to allow time for the House to take up and clear the longer-term package next week, a step that would send it to President Biden.

The legislation is a bipartisan compromise negotiated over months by the Senate and House committees with jurisdiction over the F.A.A., after Congress authorized several short-term extensions of the agency when lawmakers failed to meet earlier deadlines. The House passed its version of the bill almost a year ago in a lopsided vote of 351 to 69.

Senator Maria Cantwell of Washington, chairwoman of the Commerce Committee, celebrated the bill’s provisions on consumer protections, aviation safety, air traffic controllers, airport infrastructure and work force development on the floor after passage.

“This is a big moment for aviation,” Ms. Cantwell said. “We have had safety issues and concerns that we need to make a big investment. This legislation is that investment — in safety standards, in protecting consumers and advancing a work force and technology that will allow the United States to be the gold standard in aviation.”

Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, the top Republican on the Commerce Committee, said: “This legislation is a strong, bipartisan, bicameral bill that includes hundreds of priorities for senators and representatives, both Republican and Democrat. This bill gives the FAA the safety tools it needs at a critical time.”

As one of the few remaining bills considered a must-pass item this year, the F.A.A. package, which prompted several regional disputes, became a magnet for dozens of amendments and policy riders that threatened to delay it in the Senate.

With the legislation threatening to stall, the House on Wednesday approved a one-week extension for the F.A.A. before leaving Washington for the weekend. The Senate followed suit on Thursday, steering around lingering disputes that had threatened to scuttle the effort and cause a brief lapse for the F.A.A.

The debate came at a time of acute uncertainty about the aviation system, which has had a recent spate of concerning episodes such as dangerous near collisions on runways, plane malfunctions and thousands of flight delays and cancellations.

It was unclear for much of Thursday whether the Senate would be able to push through the legislation and the extension, as senators demanded votes on amendments or threatened to block speedy passage. No amendments were ultimately brought to a vote.

The most intense regional fight was over a provision in the bill that would add five round-trip long-haul flights out of Ronald Reagan National Airport outside Washington. Proponents, which include Delta Air Lines, have said they want to expand access to the nation’s capital and increase competition.

The proposal incensed lawmakers representing the area , who argued that the airport maintains the busiest runway in the country and cannot support additional flights. Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner of Virginia and Benjamin L. Cardin and Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, all Democrats, filed an amendment to strike the new flights.

Mr. Kaine and Mr. Warner threatened to hold the bill up if they did not receive a vote. But Mr. Cruz blocked an effort to bring up a compromise amendment that would have given the transportation secretary the final say on new flights after considering any effects they would have on delays and passenger safety.

“The Senate abdicated its responsibility to protect the safety of the 25 million people who fly through D.C.A. every year,” Mr. Kaine and Mr. Warner said in a statement. “Some of our colleagues were too afraid to let the experts make the call. They didn’t want to show the American people that they care more about a few lawmakers’ desire for direct flights than they care about the safety and convenience of the traveling public. That is shameful and an embarrassment.”

The senators from Virginia and Maryland were the only votes against the bill.

Another group of senators failed to secure a vote on a proposal to halt the Transportation Security Administration’s expansion of facial recognition technology at airports and restrict it where it is in use.

Senators had also proposed adding a number of unrelated bills, including one that would compensate people harmed by exposure to the nation’s nuclear weapons program , legislation to fully fund the replacement of the collapsed Francis Key Scott Bridge in Baltimore, and a credit card competition measure. Senators Marsha Blackburn, Republican of Tennessee, and Richard Blumenthal, Democrat of Connecticut, were pushing for a vote on their bill to protect minors online into Thursday. None of them made it into the final product.

Iron River traffic signal work next week

May 07, 2024

IRON RIVER, Mich. - Crews from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will be working on upgrading traffic signal equipment at the US-2/M-189 (North 4th Avenue) intersection in Iron River next week.

Motorists should expect intermittent lane closures at the intersection Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, May 13, 14, and 16. MDOT urges drivers to use caution when approaching the intersection while work is in progress.

Updated traffic detection equipment and a pedestrian pushbutton will be installed at the intersection to make the signal operate more efficiently.
