Top Tour Companies for Travelers With Physical Challenges

These five travel organizations help those with physical challenges explore the world.

Easy Access travelers in Israel

Wheelchair user Elissa Fischer, 64, has ataxia, a brain disease that affects her speech, coordination and ability to walk. Nonetheless, the retired Floridian and her husband recently spent eight days exploring Iceland, the Nordic island nation known for its rugged landscape and challenging outdoor adventures. Their itinerary included taking a dip in the country’s famous Blue Lagoon. Fischer couldn’t have made such a trip without the help of Iceland Unlimited, a Reykjavik-based travel company that specializes in accessible tours.

Companies like Iceland Unlimited work hard to make travel accessible to people with all types of physical challenges, including those that come with age, such as less stamina and balance problems. They host their own tours to bucket-list destinations, focusing primarily on making travel easier and doable for their clients by carefully vetting hotels, restaurants and attractions to ensure truly accessible accommodations; using accessible vans with lifts to eliminate transportation issues; arranging for wheelchairs, scooters, walkers and other special medical equipment, as needed; securing accessible cabins on cruises, and more.

In addition to their guided tours, some also provide travel agency services, such as booking trips their clients want to take on their own — always focusing on their clients’ special needs.

Below is more information on Iceland Unlimited, as well as four other accessible-focused companies.

Easy Access Travel

Debra Kerper, a bilateral amputee, found few options when looking for travel experiences she could do given her disability, so she founded Easy Access Travel in 1995. Since then, the Carrollton, Texas–based company has hosted a variety of trips both on land and at sea. Plus, as a travel agency, it helps clients plan and book both domestic and international travel, with Hawaii and New England topping the list for U.S. getaways.

Kerper’s philosophy for serving her special client base is simple: “Eliminating surprises and informing clients of possible situations remain paramount for successful planning,” she says.

Just two of the many ways the company ensures client satisfaction are by using guides in each locale who are accustomed to working with special-needs travelers, and by following routes for various excursions that are specially designed to be easily navigated by wheelchair users. It currently has accessible staterooms set aside for an Alaskan cruise this summer and for a Mediterranean cruise in October, both with Royal Caribbean. Itineraries for 2023 are still in the works; check the site for updates.

Iceland Unlimited

Jón Gunnar Benjamínsson, a former tour guide, launched Iceland Unlimited in 2010 when he began using a wheelchair following a serious car accident. The Reykjavík-based company offers three types of trips: self-driving tours, tours with private drivers and guides, and small-group guided tours. Trip planning begins with a phone consultation to determine which of the three fits a client best.

No matter the physical challenge, everyone is accommodated. “No one is ever turned away,” says Lisa Zacchia, the company’s managing director. For example, a recent client who uses a wheelchair wanted an adventurous tour with his family, so the company arranged for them to ride atop a glacier in a modified Jeep. From there, they went snowmobiling atop Langjökull, Iceland’s second-largest glacier, a thrilling experience for the entire family. Guides helped the man into a snowmobile that one of them then drove.

Clients can book either day trips or multiday tours ranging from five to seven days in length. Besides glacier exploring, adventure activities include taking a wheelchair path to a nearly 200-foot-tall waterfall and touring an active geothermal area.

Ait Ben Haddou climb in Morocco

Morocco Accessibility Travel

Morocco may seem like an unlikely destination for physically challenged travelers due to the country’s centuries-old buildings (not built for elevators) and its lack of accessibility requirements. Enter Jeremy Schmidt, a U.S. physiotherapist who moved to the African nation and founded Morocco Accessibility Travel along with a partner in 2016.

The company offers day trips and five- to 14-day guided tours. Clients can visit imperial cities and venture into the Saharan Desert and other rural areas of the country. Other possibilities include wheelchair trekking through 1,200-year-old Fez Medina structures, chilling on an Agadir beach, riding on a camel with the help of an adapted saddle, and more.

“I will never forget sitting on that camel and looking out at the sand dunes in the Moroccan desert,” says Cory Lee, 32, whose usual ride is a powered wheelchair. “It was an experience I never thought would be accessible for me, but in that moment, I realized just how accommodating the world actually can be.”

Lee’s mother, Sandy Gilbreath, 52, who traveled to Morocco with him, is grateful that companies can make such adventures doable for her son. “When I see Cory showing others that anything is possible, regardless of one’s abilities, it makes me incredibly proud,” she says.

For those who prefer to travel independently, the company also provides accessible airport transfers from several Moroccan cities and rents medical equipment, such as wheelchairs and bedroom and bathroom mobility aids.

Tapooz Travel

Years of volunteering with an organization providing outdoor adventures for people with disabilities led spouses Aïcha Nyström and Laurent Roffé to launch San Francisco–based Tapooz Travel in 2012. “While I volunteered as a sea kayak guide and Aïcha served as a ski instructor, we were continually inspired by how much the disabled could do with a little help,” Roffé says, adding that they decided to open up more of the world to this community by starting a travel company focused on this market.

The company offers a comprehensive selection of individual and hosted trips. They range from five to 21 days and take clients to 30 domestic and international destinations, with California wine country, the  Pacific Northwest  and  national parks  ranking among the U.S. favorites. For getaways abroad, the Netherlands, Nepal, Scandinavia and Switzerland are popular.

Given the couple’s background, the trips feature adventure aplenty, including hot-air ballooning, kayaking, skiing, skydiving and surfing. Adaptive equipment and guides with extensive experience working with the disabled and seniors make such activities possible. “Having guides that truly understand the psychological and physical issues makes all the difference,” Roffé says.

Wheel the World

Even though paralyzed by a spinal cord injury, Chilean Alvaro Silberstein trekked through the mountainous terrain of Patagonia’s Torres del Paine National Park in 2016 with the help of friends and a modified wheelchair. “Reaching the top of the mountain provided a boost in my self-confidence,” Silberstein says, adding that it taught him he could do anything, despite his disability, with the right attitude and a little help. That revelation led him to launch this four-year-old company that gives other people like him the assistance they need to have amazing travel experiences.

In its short life, Wheel the World has grown quickly and now provides multiple travel services. Coming up in 2022, the company has accessible group tours to five destinations:  New York City , Costa Rica, Greece, Israel and Morocco. On this summer’s five-day Big Apple trip, travelers can take an accessible stroll through Central Park, visit St. Patrick Cathedral, wander the streets of Little Italy and much more. The international trips vary from seven to 10 days.

For those not interested in a group tour, the company maintains an online platform travelers can use to book hotels, activities and multiday packaged trips in more than 80 destinations in the U.S. (Maui,  Miami  and  San Francisco  are especially popular) and abroad. The platform provides detailed accessibility information based on exhaustive vetting by the company’s own customer service team. Among the information included in hotel listings, for example, is whether front desks have lower check-in counters, whether restaurants are step-free, and how much turn space there is in guest-room bathrooms. Activity listings note the availability of accessible bathrooms, whether wheelchair users will encounter any obstacles, and more.

6 Tour Companies Dedicated to Travelers with Disabilities

By Arundhati Nath

San Pedro de Atacama Chile

Growing up, Neha Arora didn’t have the easiest time traveling with her family—her father is visually impaired and her mother is a wheelchair user. “We’d travel 2,000 miles only to realize the place wasn’t accessible or wouldn’t give us the experience we were looking forward to,” says Arora. In 2016, she founded Planet Abled , a travel company that caters to the needs of people with various disabilities, a group the World Health Organization estimates at 15 percent of the world’s population. Arora isn’t the only one pushing for more thoughtful travel experiences—here’s a look at six companies focused on accessible travel .

Travel for All

Travel for All has organized more than 5,000 vacations around the world for travelers with a variety of requirements, including cane users, slow walkers, hearing and vision impaired persons, travelers with complex health issues like dialysis and developmental disabilities, and wheelchair users. “As multiple sclerosis began to affect my own personal travel, I researched what resources could assist me with executing travel using my wheelchair,” says CEO Tarita Davenock. “I was shocked when I saw the lack of services.” Every trip Travel for All plans comes with an accessibility specialist. “We research and give our clients the pros and cons of any area in the world before planning the trip, so our client knows what to expect while they are in that destination,” says Davenock. “Meticulous planning and great attention to detail are the keystones of keeping our vacations safe.”

Seable Holidays

A Seable group trip in Cambodia, where travelers visited the Wat Phnom temple

Seable Holidays

Seable Holidays specializes in trips for visually impaired travelers. All trips include trained chaperones—who undergo a background check—as well as inclusive sports and sensory activities like horse riding, scuba diving, kayaking, wine tasting, yoga, and tactile museum excursions. And everything is thoroughly vetted, with chaperones, activities, and accommodations tested by blind people before they’re recommended by the company. While trips are on pause during the pandemic, Seable Holidays will bring them back in summer 2022.

Easy Access Travel

Debra Kerper and her team at Easy Access Travel accommodate most types of physical disabilities in their solo trips and mixed group tours. While Kerper sometimes relies on her own experiences as a traveler in a wheelchair, she says every trip needs to be tailored to an individual client’s needs. To do so, the team spends time getting to know their clients to match them with the best vacation choice, and visits hotels and tourist spots for inspection, takes cruises beforehand, and collects information from trustworthy sources to ensure a safe, accessible, and fun experience.

Planet Abled

Neha Arora’s Planet Abled arranges customized tours for people with different types of disabilities, and also plans group tours that include non-disabled people. Their trips mostly take place in India and South East Asia , with plans to expand to countries in Europe, and popular activities include river rafting, skiing, trekking, and wildlife safaris. Some of their extra touches include assigning a travel buddy for the blind, seeking special permission from museums so clients can touch and feel the articles on display, and arranging for sign language interpreters for the hearing impaired.

Wheel the World

Alvaro Silberstein, the CEO of Wheel the World , was paralyzed from the chest down after surviving an accident at 18. This didn’t stop him from seeing the world—he’s since visited 30 countries on five continents. “I realized that people with disabilities should be able to explore places as anyone else,” he says. Most of his clients are adults or seniors with mobility disabilities and wheelchair users, and he can arrange solo travel or group trips. Silberstein wants to create more awareness around accessibility, and his company pays special attention to details like the height of beds, width of doors, and accessibility of bathrooms, compiling this information on the Wheel the World website. Their multi-day trips are designed with local tour operators with a focus on accessible travel, and includes access to adaptive bikes, beach wheelchairs, and equipment for hiking, skydiving, kayaking, scuba diving, and surfing—they’ve even planned Macchu Pichu trips for wheelchair users . The company makes sure “prices are competitive and the pricing is the same no matter if the clients have a disability or not,” says Silberstein.

Tapooz Travel Portugal

A quiet moment in Sintra, Portugal

Tapooz Travel

Laurent Roffe and Aicha Nystrom spent years volunteering with an organization that provides outdoors excursions to people with disabilities. “We have many friends in wheelchairs as part of our close community,” says Roffe. “I’m a sea kayak guide and [Aicha] is a ski guide and this has always been a source of immense joy for us. Launching our accessible travel business was a natural extension of what we are and what we like to do.” Their company, Tapooz Travel , specializes in trips for those with mobility issues, including visual and hearing impairment, rather than cognitive disabilities. When they have a client with a visual or hearing impairment, they make sure there’s at least one guide trained in sign language, or have a guide who can help with things like reading the menu at the restaurant and providing a voice narration during a site visit. Their network also includes adaptive sports instructors, sailboat skippers, tribal elders, massage therapists, and hot air balloon operators , all of whom are trained to work with travelers with disabilities.

What travelers are saying

"Why Trek to Everest Base Camp in 2022 Don't you think it's time to put on your shoes and pack up the bags to trek the Everest base camp, which is the land of real-life time adventure? Well, tourism is back with the greater smack of bounce back in 2022! Bye-bye to the dull old days of covid! Trekking to Everest base camp in 2022 can be the best option to re-explore the world, abandoning the virtual world's life within a corner of a room towards the nature's open field encircled with the majestic Himalayas, sherpa people, boundless flora, and fauna with the challenging and enticing routes. Travel is more complicating as of now than before. Borders seem to reopen after a long time. A once-simple visa on entry to the airport is replaced with piles of paperwork (Covid reports). And the whole world is even not sure when a new variant will make headlines. So start your journey as early as possible! Everything we will serve the same as before. Still, there are some essential things you must consider before trekking to Everest base camp in 2022, is don't forget to follow the traveling guidelines and new laws imposed by the Nepal government."

"This was the ultimate vacation. I cant wait for the opportunity to go back again. Great accommodations and fantastic food. Above all else, the service you receive from each and every employee is first class. Horseback riding is definitely a must. Rides are based on experience level so whether your a newbie or experienced rider, you will enjoy yourself. They pair you up with a horse that you will ride for the duration of your stay. After a day of riding you can go relax your aching muscles at the spa, which is made up of tents situated by the river. My first thought when I saw them was that it was going to be rugged. Boy was I wrong! The ultimate in pampering and luxury all in a rustic setting. Dont forget to book yourself a soak in the copper tub after you enjoy a facial, scrub or massage. This is a place my husband and I cant wait to go back to."

"Travelled in March 2024. This really was an excellent trip. The boat was nice, kept really clean and a very nice crew. It is not a cruise liner, but for me that's great. The cabins are not massive, but they have all you need. I have sailed quite a bit and there was more room than I'm used to or expected. The captain combined with our guide Hailam clearly new every inch of suitable reef and small island on the atolls. We were quite often the only boat at some of the snorkel spots and they were extraordinary. The sheer volume and variety of marine life was amazing. From the smallest fish, to turtles, moray eels, and the actual structure of the reefs, all brilliant. A personal highlight was swimming and being surrounded by nurse sharks, a memory that will stay with me. Hailam was a great tour leader. He had time for everyone, and aware of all of our levels of ability once in the water. We were well looked after. The boats cook provided us with three great meals a day. Super tasty and something for everyone. The crew caught tuna early one morning and that was incredible. The evening visit to a Bodu Beru performance is not normally my thing, but I really enjoyed it and it was good fun. A great trip. I knew it would be good, but in fact it was excellent and one of the best group trips I've done."

"Ireland is fabulous and so beautiful. Can't say enough about Karin our tour guide. She made it look easy; but successfully completing a tour such as our's without a hitch takes a lot of hard work behind the scenes. Karin has a wealth of information that she presented in a way that was interesting, without going overboard. It was obvious that she and the driver were doing everthing possible to make our trip enjoyable. In addition, the weather was perfect and our group included the nicest & friendliest people."

19 Vacations With Minimal Walking for Seniors

Last Updated: March 6, 2023

Megan Marrs

Getting old shouldn’t mean you have to give up traveling!

It’s true that foreign trips traditionally require you to walk around for hours and hours at a time. All that walking means pain in your feet, knees, hips, back… basically, everywhere! It can make a vacation feel more like a chore.

However, traveling to another city or country doesn’t have to require pounding the pavement all day. There are many destinations that are easy to get around with minimal walking while still allowing you to see tons of breathtaking sights!

In this article, we’ll be exploring several types of vacations for seniors that require minimal walking, as well as specific destinations we recommend for an easy-paced trip!

Best Types of Vacations That Require Minimal Walking

1. beach vacation.

beach vacation

When it comes to sitting back and relaxing, it’s hard to beat a beach vacation. Whether it’s in Hawaii, Mexico, or even the Bahamas; there are plenty of beaches with soft sand and gentle waves that will let you take things nice and slow.

The best part is, lounging on the beach is perfect for seniors with limited mobility, since soaking up the sun is the only work that needs to be done.

2. Resort Getaway

resort

Resort vacations have a lot to offer. In addition to beautiful scenery, resorts are often filled with amenities that make it easy for seniors without much mobility to have a great time.

Many of them provide shuttles that can take guests from their rooms, right up to resort-run events, numerous pools, and hot tubs, as well as restaurants and cafes that cater to the guests’ needs!

cruise

Cruises are a great way to travel with minimal hassle. On a cruise, you don’t need to worry about packing, rolling, and carrying your bags from destination to destination. Instead, you can just sit back, relax, and keep your belongings settled in your suite as you disembark on fantastic destinations all along the cruise route.

In order to really experience your various destination stops, you will have to get off the cruise ship and walk around a little, but many cruises will run their own guided bus or van tours at various ports to make things easy.

On top of that, many cruise lines will provide fantastic shows and scrumptious meals onboard, making the entire cruise experience fun and unforgettable.

4. Bike Tours

bike tour

If you have plenty of stamina but you simply can’t handle the joint impact of walking, a bicycle tour might be an appropriate walking tour alternative. Plus, bike tours allow you to cover more ground and usually see more sites than you could by foot.

If a senior doesn’t have the best balance, consider seeing if bike tour organizers have an option to do the tour on an adult tricycle for seniors as well!

5. Boat Tour

canal boat

Boats offer a great way to see the sites of many seaside towns and tropical islands. While you won’t be seeing the same types of landmarks a city walking tour might cover, a boat tour offers a wonderful experience to spend time out on the ocean and get a feel for the natural landscape.

6. Train Trip

train trip

Trains trips can be a marvelous way to travel and experience new locations without requiring much walking. Observe scenic landscapes from the comfort of your cabin! The downside is that a train trip won’t allow you to get to know foreign cities intimately, but instead, you’ll get a great sense of an area’s vegetation and broader natural setting.

Some trips feature special vintage train cars, which may be a fun bonus for those who want to step back in time and experience travel as it used to be done in centuries past.

Amtrak has special deals for seniors , and offers some fantastic US vacation trips that will allow you to see all kinds of sights across the country without the hassle of airline travel.

7. Bus Tour

hop on bus

Bus tours are a convenient way to see the sights of a city without having to walk much and risk injury or exhaustion. These tours are easy for seniors to use and also contain the added benefit of a guide who can point out all the important landmarks in the city and even recommend top spots to eat! With a bus tour, you can see all the sites of a city without needing to hike around foreign streets.

rving

RV-ing is an increasingly popular leisure activity for many seniors, and it’s no surprise why! RVs offer all the amenities of a home: beds, kitchens, bathrooms, and even televisions! RV travelers can explore new destinations and senior-friendly outdoor activities while still enjoying creature comforts from their home on wheels. An RV allows seniors to travel across the country and see famous national treasures and landmarks, all with minimal walking required! Seniors can even join RV clubs to meet up with like-minded grey-haired adults who appreciate life on the road.

9. Riverboat Trip

riverboat

Riverboat tours are similar to boat tours in that they provide an easy way to get to know a water-soaked region without needing to walk.

Riverboat trips are generally shorter than traditional cruises, but not always.

One of the benefits of many older European cities is that they were set up long ago to use rivers and waterways as a way to connect cities so that supplies and passengers could easily travel between locations, before the advent of cars.

Many popular Europan cities feature riverboat cruises that will allow you to see plenty sights and sounds without needing to do much (if any) walking!

River cruises are a fantastic and intimate way to travel through scenic areas of Germany, Hungary, and Austria via impressive waterways like the Danube and the Rhine. See castles and villages that look like something out of a picturebook alongside picturesque landscapes!

US-based river cruises tend to be shorter and often focus on day trips, but many others offer overnights, the opportunity to dine on board, or even listen to live music, making any riverboat ride a special and unique experience.

Some riverboat trips will even have more of a theme element added, often with historical touches from the time when riverboats were a common means of travel.

19 Recommended Cities for Vacations that Require Minimal Walking

South africa.

safari

South Africa’s Kruger National Park is a must-see for any animal-loving seniors. African safaris will allow you to experience the region’s incredible wildlife from an open-air jeep or all-terrain buggy for an unforgettable walk-free trip.

Las Vegas, Nevada

las vegas

Vegas can be quite a solid pick for any senior who appreciates nightlife! Las Vegas is known as the city that never sleeps, and with plenty of shows and events going on, you can see plenty without walking much. And of course, gambling doesn’t require you to do much walking at all!

The streets and sidewalks in Las Vegas are flat and easy to maneuver, plus there are plenty of shuttles and public buses that are ADA compliant and can get you where you want to go. There are also plenty of scooter and wheelchair rental options if needed.

The downside of Vegas is that there are few outdoor activities available. Vegas also has many hotels competing for customers, so you can usually find a decent hotel without breaking the bank.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

amsterdam

Amsterdam is another one of the easiest cities to travel in for seniors. First off, the city is quite flat, allowing for easy walking as well as easy use of mobility scooters if needed. And of course, with Amsterdam’s famous large system of water canals, a low-mobility senior can travel by boat and still see much of the city.

Plus, there are plenty of bus tours that can explore the outskirts of the city, even taking you to remote fishing villages. Amsterdam’s impressive tram system is another way that seniors can get around without needing to walk much at all.

Niagra Falls, Canada

niagra falls

Niagra Falls is quite a remarkable site, situated on the border of Canada and the USA. Niagra Falls can easily be taken in by car, and a closer look can be achieved by embarking on the Maid of the Mist Boat Tour! There are trolleys and bus tours in Niagra Falls as well.

Switzerland

switzerland

While Switzerland is known as being a mountainous and hilly country (which it certainly is), it can still be a great place to visit for limited-mobility seniors.

Like many European cities, Switzerland has a fantastic rail system that makes getting around easy. There are also many cable cars, gondolas, and trams that can get you up the mountainside to take in beautiful, breathtaking sites without needing to walk or hike.

Switzerland also features several beautiful lakes such as in Brienz, Interlaken, or Luzern. Many of these lakes have paddle-steamer you can ride to your heart’s content!

hawaii

Hawaii is a US state that falls under the jurisdiction of ADA, so public attractions, hotels, and transportation must cater to mobility impairments. This allows even seniors who can’t walk much to easily get out and about town. Plus, there’s no greater pastime in Hawaii than lounging on a beach, and that requires no walking at all!

However, for those who want a bit more movement, you can rent all-terrain wheelchairs for a roll down the beach – how fun does that sound? There are also plenty of buggy rides in Hawaii that will allow a senior to see all the breathtaking sites of Hawaii without a ton of walking.

New York City, New York

nyc

New York City is perhaps the most well-known city in the world, and there’s tons to see here that don’t require hitting the pavement.

You can experience some of New York City’s best attractions like The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Central Park, and Times Square without needing to walk much at all!

Getting around isn’t usually too challenging, as NYC boasts an impressive subway system as well as a constant stream of taxis that can take you wherever you want to go.

To see as much of the city as you can, try one of the many hop-on-hop-off bus tours.

New Orleans, Louisiana

new orleans

With a culture that embodies living life to the fullest, it should come as no surprise that New Orleans is on this list!

The French Quarter in New Orleans is great for sightseeing since everything is condensed so there isn’t too much walking. There are also plenty of bus tours (even haunted ones) that you can join to get an even better understanding of the city’s history.

As a lively city with tons of European charm, you’ll find plenty of small museums as well as lots of live music to enjoy. Take a ride on a classic streetcar that runs through the city’s smaller neighborhoods, or sit out on a terrace and enjoy a Hurricane!

Madrid, Spain

madrid

Madrid is the capital and largest city of Spain. With a great metro system and a flat layout, Madrid is great for limited-mobility seniors who still want to experience a little bit of Spanish culture!

Madrid features stunning architecture, world-class art museums, and tons of great food with tapas abound!

Madrid is also home to plenty of parks like the Buen Retiro Park with its beautiful fountains or the iconic Plaza Mayor with all of its vibrant energy.

Rome, Italy

rome

While Rome isn’t the easiest city to get around in (especially its narrow and busy streets), it can be good for seniors who want to explore the ancient Roman ruins.

Despite the uneven ancient stones, there are tons of bus tours that go around the city, and you can see many of Rome’s historical beauties from the comfort of a tour van or bus. And exploring churches and museums is usually doable via scooter or wheelchair.

It may be difficult to stroll down those famous stone roads from antiquity, but a visit here is worth it for history buffs!

Krakow, Poland

krakow

Krakow is another great European city that caters to those with limited mobility.

With beautiful architecture, clean walking paths, and plenty of public transportation (including a tram system), Krakow is an accessible option for seniors looking to see Europe without too much walking!

Krakow boasts a small, compact center that’s easy to navigate – especially since there are many golf-cart style buggies that can be hired to fly you around town!

Krakow also has several art museums as well as some nice parks, making it a solid hit for those with limited mobility.

London, England

london

London is another top European city that’s easily navigable and packed with history, culture, and tons of activities.

Getting around London will be easy for seniors thanks to a great metro system that can take you all over the city, or the classic double-decker buses that run through the city’s famous squares. Plus, it’s a fairly flat city, so the little walking that you do have to do should be easy.

Paris, France

paris

Another great European city, Paris is made for seniors who want to see and do more than just sit around in their hotel room. With events occurring all over the city, like musical concerts and outdoor performances, you’ll never be bored!

Paris has a lovely metro system that’s easy to navigate as well as a host of disability-friendly bus and van tours. And with many impressive art museums that can be explored via a wheelchair or scooter, you’ll always have plenty to see.

Venice, Italy

venice

Venice is another great European city with plenty of accessible sites to visit. While it may be painfully narrow, Venice does have a lovely water taxi system that will get seniors to their favorite sites in no time. However, you will have to contend with several sets of stairs that dot Venice’s bridges if you want to do some walking, so plan out your route well or prepare to do a bit of stair-stepping.

This historic city also has a number of charming restaurants and architectural wonders that make Venice an all-around enjoyable

Vienna, Austria

vienna

Vienna has a number of accessible sites to visit – especially for the art lover. The main attractions include the Kunsthistorisches Museum (the largest art museum in Vienna), Schönbrunn Palace, and Schloss Belvedere (a lovely palace with beautiful scenery).

The city is quite flat, making it easy to maneuver around. Plus, the city features extensive pedestrian avenues with many cafes & outdoor seating that allow you to sit back and enjoy the sites. There are also fun carriage rides that offer a unique way to see the inner city without trampling around on foot.

San Antonio, Texas

san antonio

San Antonio is a fun US city that has some great sites that don’t require tons of walking. In addition to the famous Alamo, San Antonio boasts a charming Riverwalk along the San Antonio River with cute Mexican eateries and stores.

While the pathways can be fairly narrow, they are fun to walk at a leisurely pace. The  San Antonio Disability Access map  can help you plan the best accessible paths and shows the locations of elevators. There are also small boats that travel the San Antonio River too, if you want to go totally sans-walking.

Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia

williamsburg

While most US destinations are known for high-energy and action, Colonial Williamsburg is the ideal place to slow down a bit. A great spot for any history buff, seniors can spend several days here reliving the past.

With rich colonial architecture, lovely gardens, and plenty of accessible walking paths you’ll have plenty to do with very little walking.

You can visit the homes and favorite hang-outs of legendary characters like George Washington, Patrick Henry, and Thomas Jefferson. You can even watch craftsmen perform traditional crafts, such as weaving cloth or forging jewelry!

Washington, DC

washington dc

The capital of the United States is filled with history and culture, making this a top destination for seniors who want to experience the country’s beginnings.

There are many museums (including the national monuments), historical landmarks, government buildings that are ADA compliant and easy to maneuver with a scooter or wheelchair!

Washington DC also has great public transportation if you don’t want to walk around too much. And of course, there are several great bus tours as well, and many hotels will offer handy shuttle services to help you get around.

bahamas

The Bahamas is a great choice for the senior who wants to relax on white-sand beaches and enjoy some sunshine.

The Bahamas has several barrier island resorts where you can stay in beachside bungalows that are wheelchair accessible with a ramp or elevator. Just dig those feet into the sand and forget about walking!

Tips for Planning a Vacation with Little Walking

  • Talk to Your Hotel. Many hotels offer mobility scooters that can be rented for disabled guests, so call ahead and ask what kind of services they offer.
  • Utilize the Concierge. A hotel’s concierge is there to help make your trip enjoyable! If you need to call ahead about wheelchair accessibility for a certain museum you want to attend or a highlighted restaurant, the concierge can call for you and can offer tips about what areas are best for exploring with minimal walking. Also consider checking out our guide to planning a wheelchair accessible outing with Google and other online resources.
  • Avoid Cobblestones. Some European cities are filled with cobblestone streets, which can be difficult to push a wheelchair over and can pose a fall risk. This may require you to avoid the “Old Town” region of many European cities – or at least make sure to travel there via bus.
  • Explore By Water. Many European cities feature canals or rivers that allow you to travel by boat. This is a great way for limited-mobility travelers to traverse the city without having to worry about stairs or cobblestone streets.

The best cities for seniors will be relatively flat and have great public transportation. Nearly all popular tourist destinations will have hop-on, hop-off buses or van tours that can help you see the city with minimal all day. We also recommend opting for cities with great waterways and canals that will allow you to explore by boat!

Tools and Tips for Empowering Senior Travel

The beauty of travel is universal, but as we age, our travel needs evolve. For senior citizens with limited mobility, ensuring a smooth, enjoyable trip requires a bit more forethought. The good news is that with the right tools, tips, and a bit of planning, the world remains as accessible as ever. Let’s explore some key strategies to empower senior travel, ensuring every journey is both memorable and manageable.

Prioritize Accessible Accommodations

Choosing lodging isn’t just about location or luxury; for seniors, accessibility is paramount. Seek out vacation rentals or hotels boasting features like roll-in showers, accessible bathrooms, and proximity to main attractions. Remember, the best vacations are those where convenience meets comfort.

Seek Out Senior Discounts

Many popular attractions, tour companies, and even transport providers offer senior discounts. These can make your travel plans more affordable, allowing you to explore more without stretching the budget. Always inquire about any age-related benefits when booking.

Mobility Aids While Traveling

Leverage Mobility Aids

Whether it’s a mobility scooter, walker, or a simple cane, embracing mobility aids can be a game-changer. Not only do they provide support, but they also ensure popular destinations remain accessible. If flying, check airline policies about carrying mobility devices to ease the travel process.

Consider Travel Insurance

While traveling is a joy, unforeseen events can arise. For peace of mind, it’s always a good idea to invest in  travel insurance . Ensure it covers specific needs, such as medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and any mobility device damage or loss.

Collaborate with Travel Agents

For those who prefer a hassle-free planning process, collaborating with a travel agent well-versed in senior travel can be invaluable. They understand the unique needs of older adults and can curate experiences tailored to individual mobility levels.

Plan a Retirement Trip

Engage in Group Tours

Travel groups and guided tours can be a boon for seniors. Not only do they provide a structured itinerary, but they also ensure accessibility concerns are addressed. Plus, it’s a great way to meet fellow travelers and share experiences.

Keep Healthcare in the Loop

Before embarking on any journey, consult with a healthcare provider. They can offer guidance on managing any health conditions while traveling and provide insights on necessary medications or precautions.

Stay Updated on Accessibility Features

Before heading to any destination, research its accessibility features. Many places now offer detailed guides for visitors with mobility challenges. This helps in setting realistic expectations and ensuring a smooth experience.

Many European cities offer guided group tours that are designed for seniors with limited mobility, such as hop-on-hop-off buses, electric tuk-tuks, or wheelchair-accessible vans.

These tours typically cover the main sights and landmarks of the city, allowing seniors to enjoy the scenery and learn about the history and culture of the place.

Here are some specific European city tours that are appropriate for seniors with limited mobility:

Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tours

Hop-On Hop-Off bus tours are a great option for seniors with limited mobility who want to see the sights of a city without the hassle of walking or navigating public transportation.

Some of these tours can be purchased as part of a city pass ticket, which gives you access to the bus, along with discounted admission to certain attractions in the city.

These tours typically have stops at major landmarks and attractions, and passengers can get on and off the bus at their leisure.

Some tours are specifically for wheelchair users so make sure to check the type of accessibility that the specific walking tour provides.

Make sure to ask the tour company what the average size of the tour group is. I know my late husband had a hard time hearing the tour guides so we often looked for a small group tour.

This can be difficult for people with limited mobility – and even if you don’t have mobility concerns.

Also, consider the weather – if it will be hot and long treks are involved, you may want to plan for a wheelchair accessible tour vehicle instead of a walking tour.

Wheelchair Tours

Wheelchair tours are a great option for seniors with limited mobility who want to explore a city without the hassle of walking or navigating public transportation.

Many wheelchair tour companies also offer custom routes tailored to clients’ specific interests, making it easy to get the most out of your vacation.

I have a friend who always books private tours with her very own tour guide when she goes to visit France, Spain, or Italy.

She says it’s the very best thing about the vacation because she can relax and enjoy the locations, the culture, and the food without worry.

If you’re visiting someplace for the very first time, I would certainly recommend looking into local guides or a private tour.

What Are the Best Vacations for Seniors with Limited Mobility

When you had a nine-to-five job, there was never any time to take vacations. But now that you’re retired with  loads of time  on your hands, it’s mobility issues that are holding you back from traveling.

Retirement is your time to relax and enjoy life: the hard work is done, the kids are raised, and now it’s time for you to have some fun! Maybe you’ve harbored dreams of traveling the world? Exploring new cultures? Broadening your horizons?

The time has finally come to board that bus, ride those rails or take to the skies!  But are concerns about mobility hindering your enthusiasm for travel?

Don’t worry, because we have good news: You can still relish exciting senior vacations brimming with adventure and entertainment. You just need to employ careful planning and thoughtful consideration for hotels and activities!

In the sections that follow, we’ll present various vacation destinations that tailor to seniors with limited mobility, including important travel tips and other factors to ensure a relaxing vacation for everyone.

5 Trips for Seniors With Limited Mobility

When choosing a vacation spot for your senior loved one, remember to consider these important factors that can impact their accessibility.

How do I travel with limited mobility?

What about accessible hotel rooms?

Are airplanes wheelchair accessible?

Before deciding on a destination, it’s crucial to understand your loved one’s preferences and physical abilities. This includes knowing the activities they’d like to do and how much walking they’re comfortable with. These answers can help you determine the best limited mobility vacation to take with your loved one. Below are a few ideas!

1. Cruise the ocean

If you’re looking for a fun-filled senior vacation with limited walking, then call up Carnival or Royal Caribbean because in addition to cruises being all-inclusive, they’re also  easy :

  • Save time and money
  • Meals are 10  steps  away instead of  10 blocks
  • Tons of wonderful attractions to enjoy on board
  • Elevators and wheelchair ramps built right in
  • An opportunity to explore numerous exotic destinations

If you’re looking for more of a slower pace, you could always take a river cruise. River cruises are smaller than ocean liners but still offer easy ways to visit beautiful countries with similar amenities. Be sure to call ahead and let them know your circumstances so they can accommodate you.

2. Rent an RV or camper

Not a fan of the water? Rent a camper!

Is your loved one a  lover of the outdoors?  If so, camping is a low-maintenance vacation that can provide relaxation from activities such as bird-watching, fishing and strolling scenic trails. Just be sure you’re traveling in an RV/camper that has your necessary mobility features like a wheelchair lift and accessible cabinets.

3. Take a staycation

Where’s the rule that says you  must go out of town to have a good time?  Sometimes keeping it local is better than going far away because it keeps stress levels low and costs down. Plus, there’s the added perk of sleeping in your own bed at night. Depending on where you live, destinations could include:

  • Live performances
  • Bed and breakfasts
  • Wine tastings
  • Historic tours in your town
  • Festivals or farmers markets

4. Book a stay at an all-inclusive resort

Picture a cruise on land:  That’s  what staying in an all-inclusive resort is like! There are many things to enjoy on-site, like spa services and other illustrious amenities. They also offer ADA-compliant services and conveniences for seniors with limited mobility.

5. Take a mobility scooter vacation

Do you have the traveling bug? Do you own a mobility scooter?  If so, then from beach boardwalks to national parks, the world is literally your oyster. Because of  various travel organizations that help seniors with limited mobility see the world,  virtually no destination is off-limits.

Just remember that the more thorough your planning, the better prepared you’ll be.

Accessible  Stay

Your stay sets the tone for the entire trip, so once you’ve chosen your limited mobility vacation destination, it’s crucial to find  accommodations that offer accessible hotel rooms . You’ll want to find one that suits your senior loved one’s needs. Things to look for include:

  • Roll-in showers
  • Accessible rooms
  • Wheelchair accessibility

We suggest calling your hotel before booking to discuss your situation and ensure they can accommodate your needs.

Accessible  Play

Now for the fun part: accessible adventures! That’s the key to a thriving senior vacation. You’ll want to plan various activities that accommodate their needs, preferences and interests. Below are just a few ideas:

  • Embark on a guided tour . You can find one in most big cities, and they allow you to explore popular attractions without ever leaving your seat! Seniors with limited mobility commonly enjoy these tours on a bus or boat. In fact, the best cities suited for seniors with mobility issues include Washington, D.C.; Daytona Beach, Florida; and Las Vegas, Nevada.
  • Explore a national park . When most people think of a national park, they think it will involve a ton of walking, but thankfully, many are now wheelchair accessible! In addition, being outside and connecting with nature can help improve health and reduce overall stress in seniors.
  • Enjoy a spa treatment . Especially if you’re taking a cruise or booking a resort stay, carve out time to pamper yourself! After all, you are on vacation. You can relax with a hot stone massage, swim in the pool or revel in a relaxing spa.

If while on vacation and you happen to find yourself in need of limited mobility senior activities,  get creative !

Accessible  Travel

When picking a vacation spot, it’s important to look into different ways to get there. Find the best transportation option for you, like ADA buses or taxis if you’re not flying.

Fortunately, conducting research in preparation for a flight is simple, thanks to all the resources available on the internet today like  TSA special procedures  and the  U.S. Department of Transportation.  This is where you’ll find in-depth information on special travel needs like how to fly with a wheelchair, other regulations and more.

Pack the Essentials

Start your trip on the right foot by remembering to pack the proper essentials! Below is a list of important items to check off your list:

  • Medications:  Ensure important medications are refilled and there’s plenty with you in case of emergency.
  • Mobility Aids:  If you regularly rely on a cane or walker for walking long distances, be sure you bring them!
  • ID or passport:  You’ll need to present these before boarding the plane. Keep them safe.
  • Clothing for every occasion:  You can’t control the weather, but you can control the items you pack, like socks and a jacket!

Don’t Let Limited Mobility Hold You Back

My husband. Has copd and uses oxygen extensively. Not sure how cruise ships or hotels such as Westin would accommodate this type request? Thank you.

What people love about Europe Tours for Seniors

Great experience. Very fun.
My first tour to Europe with my family was the best, can’t ask for a better time. Great team, tour leader Jemma and the coach Coen, thanks much. The itinerary was as described, everything was on time. Definitely I will planning again.
Our guide Michelle was excellent. The city sightseeing tours on the bus were a waste of time. Our local tour guide in Edinburgh was awful. Why the laughing through most of her talking? Very irritating. The Fish & Chips dinner in the local dumpy restaurant was the worst meal of the trip. Otherwise just what we expected.

In the midst of a global pandemic such as Covid-19, it is sometimes hard to take our mind off the pleasures of getting away with family and friends, even for a little while. We all need time for some R & R and venture out into the great outdoors. However, not everyone can easily hike up the Rocky Mountains or skydive over the Grand Canyon. Seniors with limited mobility would probably have to find other ways of excitement and adventure. I am here to say, fear not! In today’s world there are now many popular places where seniors can vacation and still find ways to explore the open road without worrying about how to get to their ultimate destination. Here are the top ten U.S. Vacation spots for Seniors with limited mobility.

1. Scottsdale, Arizona

bus tours for seniors with limited mobility

Scottsdale is known for lots of activities and events, and seniors who enjoy the outdoors can pretty much find almost anything to do, even with limited mobility. The temperature is dry and warm, with a mountainous background. Most of Scottsdale is pedestrian-friendly and has several senior communities. One place to explore is the Arts and Cultural district, with its demonstration of public art, several galleries and museums, including places to take art classes. Scottsdale is also a great place for shopping in the Old town area, play a game of Golf, or taking a stroll through the Desert Botanical Gardens. Most places are handicap or wheelchair accessible. There are also numerous restaurants and dining areas for both young and old. Some other options are the Phoenix Zoo and surveying the beautiful waterfront areas. The Phoenix Zoo provides some parking areas for handicap vehicles and the walk paths are paved for easy access with a wheelchair/walker. Seniors who don’t want to get too much of the Arizona sun can take their chances with several of the nearby Casinos for gambling and entertainment. For seniors, Scottsdale is truly one of the top vacations for senior citizens with limited mobility in the USA.

2. Palm Springs, California

bus tours for seniors with limited mobility

Palm Springs , California is among the most beautiful vacation spots that seniors love to visit. It provides scenic views of the Colorado mountains in the distance, lots of bike trails throughout the city, hills of golf courses, and plenty of luxury resorts and spa treatments available. Due to the high demand of accessibility needs for seniors, the city of Palm Springs in California has recently carried out numerous ADA projects to help seniors become more mobile.  For example, the city installed audio pedestrian push buttons at traffic signal intersections throughout the city for visually impaired seniors and all disabled citizens. There is a Buzz Trolley providing free transport services for disabled seniors and tourists. The city of Palm Springs has also upgraded many of their sidewalks and newly paved streets to add accessible curb ramps for wheelchairs and motorized scooters throughout the city limits. The city of Palm Springs is dedicated to provide any appropriate aid or services to all citizens with limited mobility, in reasonable modifications to policies and programs.

3. Branson, Missouri

bus tours for seniors with limited mobility

Branson, Missouri may be third on this list, however, it is the one place that Seniors with limited mobility flock to every year. Branson is well-known for their love of theatrics. The town provides a wide variety of live shows, attractions, and museums. Places such as Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede Dinner Attraction offers delicious food and entertainment, with the main floor completely accessible for seniors with limited mobility. Another option is the Silver Dollar City Theme Park and Attraction. It provides accessible handicap parking for guests with government-issued license plates or tags on a first come, first serve basis. The town is located among three crystal clear lakes, where water skiing, fishing, kayaking, and camping is popular. Branson offers romantic dinner cruises, amusement parks, and even a National Tiger Sanctuary just outside the town’s limits. For seniors with mobility issues, most of these options are still accessible and seniors are ready to participate while in Branson. Branson is also known for their winery tours and tastings.

4. Charleston, South Carolina

bus tours for seniors with limited mobility

Charleston, South Carolina is one of the most beautiful cities to visit for both seniors and family gatherings. Charleston is among the oldest towns off the east coast and offers many scenic attractions, entertainment, and adventure opportunities for all ages. As one of the oldest cities in the US, it is no doubt that it may prevent some mobility issues for the disabled and elderly. However, the city has been working to accommodate all who come to visit and make the town more accessible over the past decade. Downtown provides many attractions to appease all visitors. The streets are laid with cobblestone, so it may be tricky with a wheelchair; specifically due to uneven sidewalks and steps off of certain historic buildings. Yet it still attracts many seniors to visit the populated district. Places such as Patriots Point, Fort Sumter, the Morris Lighthouse and the South Carolina Aquarium are very accessible for seniors with limited mobility. Many offer free parking to handicapped individuals, elevator access for wheelchair-bound seniors, and oversized bathrooms for better accessibility. Another place to visit is the Battery and White point Gardens. They offer packed gravel walkways, making it easy for a wheelchair or motorized scooter to navigate through.

5. Disneyland (California)

bus tours for seniors with limited mobility

Everyone knows Disneyworld in Florida; however, did you know that Disneyland in Anaheim, California is the original Disney Park Founded by Walt Disney? The Disneyland park is a great place for family vacations, holiday getaways, and fun events. Disneyland park also offers a variety of accommodations and services for guests with disabilities. The staff at Disneyland wants your stay as pleasant as possible. They make sure everyone, including seniors, are comfortable and accommodates all your personal or unique needs. Disneyland provides a Disability Access Service, which many seniors take advantage of each time they come to visit. Seniors who do not have a wheelchair and need to rent one, Disneyland offers manual wheelchair rentals as well as electronic conveyance vehicle rentals(ECV). The wheelchairs make it convenient and easier to get from one section of the park to the next, especially for guests that find it challenging to travel long distances. The only back draw is wheelchairs are only available on a first come, first serve basis. Companion bathrooms are also available throughout the Disneyland park and resort.  In addition, the park provides advanced ticket purchasing, allowing seniors with limited mobility to move forward in the lines without the long waiting time. Disneyland also considers guests that have visual and hearing disabilities, including light sensitivity. Now you know why Disneyland in Anaheim, CA is one of the best vacation spots for senior citizens with limited mobility.

6. Great Smoky Mountains (in Tennessee)

bus tours for seniors with limited mobility

Exploring the Smoky Mountains is one of the most enjoyable pastimes for people of any age, this includes seniors of limited mobility. They run through parts of Tennessee and North Carolina; however, Tennessee offers more accessibility for seniors with limited mobility. Many parts of the smokies can be adored by the comfort of your vehicle. There are several facilities such as campgrounds, cabins, and paved hiking trails that provide accessible features throughout the park, allowing seniors to still enjoy the beauty of the outdoors, even in a wheelchair or motorized scooter.  Some cabins offer wheelchair accessible ramps and handicap parking spots. Great Smoky Mountains National Park is also a very wheelchair accessible vacation destination, due to free national parks passes available to seniors with permanent disabilities. The application process is available in-person; however, due to social distancing it is recommended to mail-in the application. Other areas that provide accessibility to seniors are Cades Cove, Sugarlands Valley Nature Trail, and the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail. Most parts of the trails are paved and usable with a wheelchair.

7.  Multnomah Falls, Portland

bus tours for seniors with limited mobility

Located off the Columbia River Gorge, the Multnomah Falls offers prestigious scenic views, popular restaurants, and busy attractions year round. The Falls are the second highest waterfall in the US and it is also one of the most historic places to visit in Portland. There is also a nearby vineyard for seniors and other guests to do some taste-testing. Seniors with limited mobility can enjoy many of the pleasures that other guests participate in as well. For example, in 1994, an elevator was added in the nearby Multnomah Falls lodge to make it wheelchair accessible. The lower level of the lodge offers a snack bar, gift shop, and visitor’s center for easy access. The visitor center also provides brochures in several languages and free trail maps as well. The restaurant and bar is upstairs and is accessible by the use of the elevator. There is disability parking at the lodge and on the other end of the falls where Interstate 84 runs, however, it is limited. The trail leading up to the falls is partly paved, so wheelchair access is limited to certain areas.

8. Washington, D.C.

bus tours for seniors with limited mobility

Washington, DC is by far one of the most accessible cities throughout the Nation and around the world. Many visitors come to Washington, DC to explore American History and what makes America one of the greatest Countries in the World. This is what makes Washington, DC one of the best vacation spots for senior citizens. The Capital provides a wide variety of accessible activities and events. Places such as the National Mall, Lincoln’s Memorial, Washington’s Monument, and local museums offer accessible restrooms, wheelchair ramp entrances, elevator access, wheelchair rentals, and handicap parking to accommodate seniors and all guests with limited mobility issues. The city provides a wheelchair accessible trolley called the Metro for those who need help getting around the city. The Smithsonian is also one of the most popular places for seniors to visit while vacationing at the Capital. Providing a number of museums and research centers, the Smithsonian can entertain visitors for hours. Seniors can spend a whole weekend visiting different parts of the grounds. Having an electric wheelchair would make your trip go much smoothly and allow you to explore more places. There are some places throughout the city that offer scooter rentals; however, they usually have a minimum of three days requirement or more.

 9. Morgan’s Wonderland (San Antonio, TX)

bus tours for seniors with limited mobility

Morgan’s Wonderland is located in San Antonio, TX; where many vacationers come to visit to tour the Alamo, discover the rich Culture, and experience great entertainment throughout the city. Morgan’s Wonderland is the World’s first ultra-accessible theme park, making it one of the best vacations for senior citizens with limited mobility. The park is completely wheelchair-accessible for all ages- and created with special-needs individuals in mind. Morgan’s Inspiration Island, located next to the main park, provides waterproof wheelchairs, wheelchair-accessible dressing rooms, oversized restrooms with Hoyer lifts inside-convenient for transferring adult individuals, and much more. The park also offers over 25 elements, which includes playgrounds, rides, and many colorful attractions. All individuals with special needs enter free of charge. The Wonderland park actually has several subsections, providing entertainment for all visits, disabled or not. The grounds offer laser-poured concrete to ensure better accessibility and custom tinting to reduce heat during hot, summer months. The whole park is designed for maximum flexibility with the spirit of inclusion at its core. All its guests, including Seniors with limited disability will feel completely relaxed and right at home.

10. National Parks

bus tours for seniors with limited mobility

The United States National Parks provide some of the most beautiful scenic backgrounds, cultivating waterfalls, and natural wildlife for individuals and families to explore. Many National parks have paths and trails that are wheelchair accessible, and offer special access passes to seniors with limited mobility.

Here are two more popular and accessible parks throughout our country.

  • Statue of Liberty National Park – Although social distancing is still in effect, Liberty Island is reopened for business. The Statue of Liberty National Park provides entertainment through exceptional food service(outdoors only), gift shops, and museum entries(now reopen). Most of the park is wheelchair accessible. The Statue itself provides an elevator to take guests up to the top. Experiencing a parametric view of New York Harbor is something nobody can forget. If you do not have a wheelchair there is a limited amount available for rentals. Accessible ramps are also put in place in and around the island.
  • Denali National Park and Reserve – Denali National Park and Reserve is located in the great state of Alaska, where you can find  beautiful scenic mountain views, gorgeous sunsets, and astonishing wilderness to travel through.  Senior citizens travel to this state for vacations and something to do when retirement arrives. For those who deal with limited mobility, traveling can sometimes be challenging. However, Denali has worked hard to provide as much accessibility to seniors and all guests with limited mobility. Most hiking trails and campgrounds are well-paved and leveled for easy use with a wheelchair. Restrooms in certain areas provide large stalls, accessible with a wheelchair and can accommodate people those with physical and mobility concerns. A special travel permit is available for those with disabilities at the Denali visitor center. Some of the Shuttle busses that provide tours offer wheelchair lifts as well.  Busses may also provide a step-stool to aid passengers getting on and off the bus. Those who decide to travel privately, must obtain a road permit to use the entrance road.

Immobile Reimagined

Traveling across the states can be a great way to explore our natural landmarks, cruise our beautiful rivers, and adventure to new heights. Yet seniors with limited mobility may find some complications or challenges compared to those without any disadvantages of health or wellbeing.

However, it does not have to be this way. Vacations for senior citizens with limited mobility are becoming more accessible than ever before. Nature trails are being paved and leveled, to provide safer pathways for those using walkers/wheelchairs. Companion restrooms are being installed at national parks and museums for better accessibility for wheelchair users and family members. Historical buildings are receiving an upgrade by adding elevators to accommodate guests that are confined to wheelchairs and ECV’s.

Seniors and other wheelchair users and people with disabilities can find:

  • wheelchair accessible buses
  • accessible attractions
  • accessible tours
  • accessible bathrooms
  • accessible room on a cruise line

Multiple destinations, like Las Vegas, offer accessible hotels; resorts offer accessible beaches; even cruise ships have accessible entrances. Popular tourist attractions like the Rocky Mountain National Park offer mobility scooters, wheelchair accessible paths, and accessible overlooks. Planning family vacations with a mobility device has never been easier. Major attractions like the San Diego Zoo offer offer accessible transportation from services like the san diego trolley and a wheelchair accessible shuttle.

Vacation ideas no longer have to be limited. Niagara Falls, the golden gate bridge, daytona beach, and even outdoor activities are surprisingly accessible. Whether it’s accessible pools with grab bars or accessible seating for entertainment, the best accessible attractions make mobility limitations no problem.

As we all age, our once mobile body prevents us from moving forward, or at least slower than we expect. So to feel and stay active, we look for places that can accommodate our new norm and have an enjoyable vacation. This list shows seniors with limited mobility that they can still go wherever they want and enjoy life in the Great Outdoors.

Angel Flight West – Free Medical Transportation

A small child, ravaged by cancer, needs specialized lifesaving treatment at a hospital 300 miles away. A father, separated from his family by a hurricane, wants desperately to be reunited.

bus tours for seniors with limited mobility

A domestic-violence survivor longs to start a new life in another city, but cannot afford to leave. These are just a few of the people to whom we offer help and hope.

There’s an angel in the cockpit. The ability to travel easily across the country is something that most of us take for granted. But for those whose lives are in turmoil, the financial, physical, and emotional burdens can make ordinary trips extraordinarily difficult. That’s when they turn to Angel Flight West. Our network of 1,400+ volunteer pilots fly their own planes and pay for all costs out of their own pockets, in order to make these critical journeys.

At our headquarters in Santa Monica, California, our ground team manages the complex system of matching pilots with passengers, coordinating the flights, spreading the word among referral agencies, and continually recruiting new volunteers.

What we do is much like running a small airline, further complicated by the extra care and expense of working with passengers who need our help, their families, as well as medical and hospital personnel. The beneficiaries of the flight – the passengers and their families, the healthcare organizations – pay nothing at all, ever.

  • Service Area: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming
  • Transportation Services Provided: Medical Appointments.
  • Request must be verified by a medical provider involved in the passenger’s care (social worker, nurse, doctor, etc.)We will need a medical provider involved in the passenger’s care to fill out brief paperwork that we send directly to him or her.
  • Medically stableWe will need to have a physician verify that the passenger is medically stable and able to fly commercially.
  • Geographic criteria AFW provides air transportation within the 13 Western states: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. Passengers will be referred to other organisations if the transportation would involve travel outside this service area. Note: We may be able to provide commercial air transportation if the flight originates in our territory but terminates outside of our territory if the destination is the only place a patient can receive potentially life saving treatment.
  • Reason for travel AFW primarily provides air transportation for patients travelling to and from scheduled medical treatment. We also arrange “compassion” flights for individuals who need to visit or be a caregiver for a critically ill family member. Additionally, we will arrange flights to relocate victims of domestic violence, to transport children and adults to camps for a variety of special needs (such as burn survivors and families impacted by HIV or AIDS), and to fly support staff and supplies during natural disasters or other crises. “Compassion” requests are accepted on a case-by-case basis.
  • Financial or compelling needAFW is a charitable service and Alaska Airlines is a generous donor, providing hundreds of tickets to help patients get to necessary treatment. We recognise that the costs of medical care, lost wages, and providing care can deplete a family’s resources. Passengers do not need to be desperate or destitute to qualify, we simply want to make the best use of our limited resources.
  • 2 business days’ advance noticeWe generally require 2 business days’ advance notice to review the paperwork and book a flight. In some cases, we can accommodate shorter term requests.
  • Apply Online: Angel Flight West – Request a Flight
  • or Please Contact: 888-4-AN-ANGEL (888-426-2643)
  • 1 Because of the limited resources of our volunteer pilots, the distance traveled can be no more than 1,000 miles in each direction.
  • 2 There is never a charge of any kind for an Angel Flight.
  • 3 Your flight will be scheduled to accommodate your medical appointment.
  • 4 Your pilot will pick you up at an airport near your home and bring you to your treatment facility.
  • 5 Your flight is just for you, and will typically be in a small private plane.
  • 6 This means that we can pick you up at an airport near your home, even if you live in a rural area.
  • 7 After your appointment, another pilot will pick you up and bring you home.
  • 8 You can bring companions to travel with you.
  • 9 You can travel with Angel Flight on as many trips as you need.

Miracle Flights – Free Flights

Since 1985, we’ve provided more than 127,000 free flights to those in need of life-changing medical care not available in their local communities.

bus tours for seniors with limited mobility

Almost all Miracle Flights patients suffer from medical conditions treated by only a handful of experts located across the country, which makes medical travel a necessity. While insurance may cover actual treatment, it rarely covers the cost of travel.

As a result, many patients go untreated or misdiagnosed, simply because they can’t get to the medical experts who can effectively treat their condition. That’s where Miracle Flights comes in. We alleviate the financial burden of travel so families can focus on treatment and recovery.

We fly everywhere, every time. Our team provides commercial plane tickets to all U.S.-based medical treatment facilities at no cost to families. Thanks to the generous support of our donors, we’re able to fly patients as many times as needed. We’ve been flying some for more than 18 years.

We fly everyone, of every age. We help treat all diseases for patients of every age. Simply put, we’ll fly anyone with a complex medical need who requires distant medical care. We believe in the healing power of family.

We’ll pay to fly both parents or legal guardians of patients under 18. We’ll pay to fly a caregiver or companion for adult patients.

  • Service Area: United States.
  • Is the patient medically cleared to safely travel on a commercial plane?
  • Do you have a confirmed medical appointment requiring air travel? Your treatment site will need to verify your medical appointment date.
  • Is your requested departure date at least 14 days away from today’s date?
  • Based on your household size, does your family’s gross income fall at or below our established financial thresholds (must be verifiable using IRS tax documentation)? Our financial thresholds are based on household size and are generally three times the listed annual Federal Poverty Guidelines listed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
  • Application Details: TO SIGN UP/SCHEDULE FOR RIDES:
  • Online Flight Request Application
  • or Please Contact: 800-359-1711
  • 1 Miracle Flights provides free commercial airline tickets to those in need of life-changing medical care far from home.
  • 2 Our programming services are available to children and adults! Miracle Flights will provide free commercial flights for anyone that needs medical care far from home, regardless of their age.
  • 3 Miracle Flights will provide up to two round trip flights each month for eligible patients and family members for as long as it takes. Some families have received dozens of flights from us over the course of many years.
  • 4 We ask that you submit a new online flight request application for each requested medical travel journey.
  • 5 We ask that all flight request applications be submitted at least 14 days before your requested departure date. This allows us optimal time to search and coordinate the most accommodating flight for you at the most economical price for our organization.
  • 6 “For a Child Patient – Miracle Flights will provide flights to a qualifying child patient (age 17 and under at the time of medical appointment) and up to two adult parents/legal guardians/family members (up to 3 total passengers). For an Adult Patient – Miracle Flights will provide flights for an adult patient (age 18 and over) and one spouse/caregiver/family member (up to 2 total passengers) if it is medically necessary for the patient to travel with a chaperone.”
  • 7 We’ll provide flights to anywhere in the United States, as long as your treatment site verifies your medical appoint date. In cities with multiple airports, we’ll generally provide flights to the airport that is best for you and your family as long as it’s economically feasible for our organization.
  • 8 Passengers are responsible for all baggage fees and add-on fees as set forth by the airline they are traveling. Please visit your airline’s website for the latest details and processes.

How to Get Free — or Low-Cost — Car Rides

Learn how to find ride services near you

An older woman wearing a mask buckles her seat belt in the passenger seat of a car while looking at a young woman in the driver's seat.

Need a ride to the doctor, the grocery store, or pharmacy? If a neighbor or family member can’t take you, a ride service can help you stay independent.

Your options will depend on what ride services are available where you live.

AARP Foundation has been helping people find affordable ways to secure the essentials for more than 60 years. Here’s what you need to know about getting a ride when you need one.

Rideshare Apps

On-demand ride services like Lyft and Uber are today’s version of taxis. There are two ways to save money on rides: Ordering a ride during less busy times of day and sharing a ride with another passenger going the same way.

While you schedule Lyft or Uber rides using a smartphone app, there are ways to book and pay with a simple phone call. Some assisted living communities, health organizations, and senior centers partner with Lyft and can schedule a ride for you. Your doctor also may be able to schedule a free ride to your appointment for you using  Uber Health .

You can also call to schedule Uber or Lyft rides through GoGoGrandparent . Memberships start at $9.99 a month, and also include access to delivery services like Instacart, Postmates, or DoorDash. On a tight budget? An out-of-town relative may be happy to pay for your subscription.

Assisted Transportation

Most counties across the U.S. offer discounted public transportation services for older adults who need door-to-door rides. Call your local senior center to see what’s available in your area.

If you need extra help, a door-through-door agency may be a good fit. For a small fee, drivers help you “through” your door and on “through” the door of your destination — and back. The service usually includes help with your bags, wheelchair, or walker, too.  ITNAmerica  is a door-through-door agency available in nine states (Kentucky, Connecticut, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, California, Oregon, Delaware, and Missouri) promising affordable rates — and they don’t allow tipping.

Volunteer Driver Programs

Churches, synagogues, or nonprofits in your area may have volunteers who give rides to shopping, recreation, doctor’s appointments and other everyday errands. You’ll need to make a reservation and it’s usually free or offered for a low fee.

Para-Transit

Unable to use the train or buses near you? Public transportation services are required to offer paratransit vans or buses, which provide rides for older adults or those with disabilities. Rules to qualify vary but in general, you must meet certain conditions under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). To get a ride — usually shared with other passengers — you need to schedule it in advance. There may be senior discounts for your ride.

Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT)

If you’re on Medicaid, you may qualify for a free ride to your doctor’s appointments. Rules vary by state, but most offer what’s called non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) rides. To schedule a ride, you may need to call a Medicaid caseworker, a ride service, or another agency.

If you’re on private insurance, some Medicare Advantage plans also may cover rides to doctor’s visits. And a growing number of insurers and state Medicaid programs are covering Lyft and Uber rides. Check with your insurance provider for details.

Ultimately deciding which ride service to use will depend on what’s available in your area. In addition to asking your local senior center, you can search what’s available near you.

Economical Advantages of Pack Purchases for Mobility Scooters

Cost-saving benefits.

Purchasing mobility scooters in packs or bundles can offer significant cost-saving benefits. When you buy multiple scooters together, you often receive a discounted price compared to purchasing them individually. This means that you can save money while still getting the personal mobility aids you need.

Economical Advantages of Pack Purchases for Mobility Scooters

Convenience and additional value

Pack purchases also provide convenience and additional value, especially for individuals or families with multiple users. Instead of buying each scooter separately, a pack purchase allows you to acquire all the scooters you need in one go. This saves time and effort, making it easier to get everyone equipped with their own mobility scooter quickly.

Significant savings

One of the main advantages of buying mobility scooters in packs is the potential for significant savings. By taking advantage of bundle deals or bulk discounts, you can enjoy substantial cost reductions compared to purchasing each scooter individually. These savings can add up, allowing you to allocate your budget more efficiently.

Economical Advantages of Pack Purchases for Mobility Scooters

For example, imagine needing three mobility scooters for your family members. If each scooter costs $500 when purchased individually, that would amount to a total of $1,500. However, if there is a pack deal available where you can buy three scooters together for $1,200, this would result in a saving of $300.

A War on the Nile Pushes Sudan Toward the Abyss

By Declan Walsh

Photographs by Ivor Prickett

Declan Walsh and Ivor Prickett spent three weeks traveling in Sudan, which has been closed to most foreign journalists since the war began.

The gold market is a graveyard of rubble and dog-eaten corpses. The state TV station became a torture chamber. The national film archive was blown open in battle, its treasures now yellowing in the sun.

Artillery shells soar over the Nile, smashing into hospitals and houses. Residents bury their dead outside their front doors. Others march in formation, joining civilian militias. In a hushed famine ward, starving babies fight for life. Every few days, one of them dies.

Khartoum, the capital of Sudan and one of the largest cities in Africa, has been reduced to a charred battleground. A feud between two generals fighting for power has dragged the country into civil war and turned the city into ground zero for one of the world’s worst humanitarian catastrophes.

As many as 150,000 people have died since the conflict erupted last year, by American estimates . Another nine million have been forced from their homes, making Sudan home to the largest displacement crisis on earth, the United Nations says. A famine looms that officials warn could kill hundreds of thousands of children in the coming months and, if unchecked, rival the great Ethiopian famine of the 1980s.

Fueling the chaos, Sudan has become a playground for foreign players like the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Russia and its Wagner mercenaries, and even a few Ukrainian special forces. They are all part of a volatile stew of outside interests pouring weapons or fighters into the conflict and hoping to grab the spoils of war — Sudan’s gold, for instance, or its perch on the Red Sea.

Soldiers on trucks wearing fatigues and carrying rifles.

The greatest tragedy is that none of it was necessary, said Samawal Ahmed, as he picked his way through the remnants of a famous market, past looted jewelry stores and a mangled tank. A year ago, in the first weeks of the war, a rocket smashed into his apartment, and the medical lab where he worked closed down for good. Now he was back, to salvage what he could.

“I lost everything,” he said, holding a batch of documents pulled from the wreckage of his home: his children’s school certificates, his professional qualifications, and a passport. Across the street, the withered remains of three fighters, reduced to bones, were splayed among the debris.

“It makes my stomach churn,” Mr. Ahmed said. “All this could have been avoided.”

The war erupted without warning in April 2023, when a standoff between Sudan’s military and a powerful paramilitary group it helped create — the Rapid Support Forces — burst into gunfire on the streets of Khartoum.

Few Sudanese expected it would last long. Since independence in 1956, their country has experienced more coups than any other in Africa, most short-lived and bloodless. The rivals this time — the national army and the paramilitary force that once did its bidding — had seized power together in 2021, but fell out over how to merge their armies.

Almost immediately, the fighting ripped across Khartoum and far beyond, in pulsing waves that quickly consumed Africa’s third-largest country. Sudanese have been stunned by the destruction, but neither side looks capable of victory, and the war is metastasizing into a devastating free-for-all.

Another genocide now threatens Darfur , the region that became synonymous with war crimes two decades ago. Fields have become battlegrounds in the country’s breadbasket. The health system is crumbling. And a plethora of armed groups, including hard-line Islamists, foreign mercenaries and even former pro-democracy protesters, has piled into the fight.

With American-led peace talks stalled, the Sudanese state is collapsing and threatening to drag down a fragile region with it. Experts say it is a matter of time before one of Sudan’s many neighbors, like Chad, Eritrea or South Sudan, gets sucked in.

Though often overshadowed by the wars in Gaza and Ukraine, the conflict in Sudan has global ramifications. Iran, already allied with the Houthis in Yemen, is now backing military forces on both sides of the Red Sea. Europeans fear a wave of Sudanese migrants heading for their shores. A recent U.S. intelligence assessment warned that a lawless Sudan could become a haven for “terrorist and criminal networks.”

We spent three weeks crossing Sudan, where few foreign reporters have gained access in the past year.

We traveled from Port Sudan, the new de facto capital on the Red Sea, where nearly quarter of a million have sought refuge.

We drove through sandstorms and dozens of checkpoints guarded by jumpy fighters, reaching Khartoum, the ravaged city where the war began.

As we approached the capital, artillery boomed, a warplane swept overhead and, across the Nile, an oily plume of smoke rose from Sudan’s largest refinery — the latest flashpoint in a sprawling urban battle. With the city in tumult, we slept in an abandoned house, where a neighbor told of how a bomb killed his sister in their kitchen.

It was just one corner of a country three times larger than France. Yet it was possible to see, up close, the immense damage to a capital once considered a jewel on the Nile — and how, if unchecked, it could still get much worse.

Gunfire and mortars splashed into the waters around Col. Osman Taha, a badly wounded officer in the Sudanese military, as he crossed the Nile on a moonless night last November. Around him, he recalled, other wounded soldiers huddled in the boat, hoping to avoid being hit again. Several died.

Colonel Taha made it to the far bank, and five days later his right leg was amputated. Even then, there was no respite. As he recovered in a military hospital overlooking the Nile, he said, shells slammed into its walls, fired by the Rapid Support Forces across the river. Patients moved their beds to avoid being hit as artillery fell.

“It was hell."

Col. Osman Taha, a wounded officer in the Sudanese military.

The Nile has long defined Khartoum. Its tributaries merge in the city center before pushing north through the desert into Egypt. Now, the great river divides Khartoum militarily as well, yet another front line in a splintered capital.

Snipers nestle in the riverbank beneath a giant bridge, blown up in fighting, that slumps into the river. Drones swoop over the water, hunting for targets. And an island in the center of the Nile, where people once picnicked and swam , has become a kind of open-air prison controlled by the R.S.F., residents say.

“Watch your step,” said Dr. Manahil Mohamed as she led us up a sandbag-lined staircase to the fourth floor of the Aliaa Specialist Hospital, overlooking the Nile, where a line of blown-out windows offered a stark panorama.

On the deserted street below, burned-out vehicles clustered around the Parliament building. In the distance stood the skeletal skyline of downtown Khartoum: government ministries, luxury hotels and mirrored high-rises that poked over the city’s poverty, many built during Sudan’s oil boom of the 1990s, now pocked by shelling or gutted by fire. Among them stood the old Republican Palace where followers of the Mahdi, a cleric, toppled and beheaded the country’s British governor-general, Charles Gordon, in 1885. It, too, has gone up in smoke.

In many ways, the destruction in Khartoum is a bitter historical reckoning. For over half a century, Sudan’s military waged ugly wars in the nation’s distant peripheries, quelling rebellions by deploying ruthless militias. Khartoum was left untouched, its residents insulated from the consequences of wars fought in their name.

Now, the army’s most powerful creation — the Rapid Support Forces, a successor to the infamous Janjaweed militias that terrorized Darfur in the 2000s — has turned against the military and brought its trademark havoc to the capital.

Half of Khartoum state’s nine million residents have fled, the United Nations estimates. Its international airport is closed, bullet-pocked jets abandoned on the runway. Nearly all of the city’s 1,060 bank branches have been robbed, officials say, and many thousands of cars stolen — some later located as far away as Niger, 1,500 miles west — in a campaign of street-by-street looting, most but not all, by the Rapid Support Forces.

“A city of this size, this wealth, and nothing remains?” Mohamed Eldaw, a banker, said. “It must be the biggest episode of looting in history.”

At the Aliaa hospital, a triple thud of outgoing artillery shattered the calm. Warning of snipers, Dr. Mohamed urged us back inside.

For months, shells rained on the hospital, which mostly treated soldiers, often punching through its walls, she said. With no electricity, surgeons performed operations by the light of mobile phones.

Relief came in February when the military, armed with powerful new Iranian drones, recaptured this part of the city. (By contrast, the R.S.F. uses drones supplied by the United Arab Emirates).

The military’s advance allowed hundreds of wounded troops to be evacuated by air to Port Sudan, where they lie in the crowded wards of a military hospital. One man had extensive facial injuries from a drone strike. Amputations were common.

The evacuees included Colonel Taha, who sat up in his bed to show a series of videos that he took during his last battle. Jubilant soldiers can be seen whooping and hugging, thinking they have won. Bleeding R.S.F. fighters lie in the dust, and are kicked or taunted by the soldiers. The camera flips to show Colonel Taha himself, sweating heavily, his eyes glazed from battle.

But the soldiers had missed one R.S.F. fighter, a sniper hidden in a residential block, and he shot Colonel Taha in the leg. Later that night, he said, medics moved him to an ammunition factory beside the Nile, where they embarked on their perilous crossing.

He was pessimistic the war would end anytime soon.

“Guns can’t solve this problem,” he said. “We need to talk peace.”

The Famine Ward

To Amna Amin, war means hunger.

After Rapid Support Forces fighters swept into her part of Omdurman, one of the three cities that make up greater Khartoum, Ms. Amin, 36, had no way to feed her five children.

Her husband, a gold miner in the distant north, had vanished. She lost her job as a cleaner. Neighbors shared what they could, but it wasn’t enough. And soon she had two more mouths to feed: Iman and Ayman, twins born in September.

Within months, the twins started losing weight and suffering diarrhea, classic signs of malnutrition. Panicking, Ms. Amin bundled her children in her arms and made a desperate dash across the front line, traveling by donkey cart and minibus to reach Al Buluk children’s hospital, the last place they might be saved.

The United Nations has yet to officially declare a famine in Sudan, but few experts doubt that one is already underway in parts of Darfur and, shockingly, Khartoum, one of the largest capitals in Africa.

More than 220,000 children could die in the coming months alone, the U.N. says . And both sides use hunger as a weapon of war, aid officials say. The army withholds visas, travel permits and permission to cross the front lines. Rapid Support Force fighters have looted aid trucks and warehouses and raised their own obstacles.

“One of the most horrific situations on Earth is on a trajectory to get far, far worse,” said Tom Perriello, the United States envoy for Sudan.

photo

At the hospital, Ms. Amin’s twins, Iman and Ayman, lay with thin limbs and papery skin. They had been saved. For now.

But many more starving children arrive every day, and the entire health system is crumbling.

Half of Khartoum’s 50 hospitals are closed, many destroyed in fighting, said Dr. Sohail Albushra, a state health official.

The hospitals still functioning are strained to the point of collapse. Every day hundreds of new patients arrive at Al Nau hospital, near the frontline in Omdurman. Many sleep two to a bed.

Patients spoke of pinballing from one neighborhood to another as the front line shifts, running a gauntlet of checkpoints defended by fighters who demand money, steal phones and sometimes open fire.

Huda Adil, 30, was paralyzed from the waist down after R.S.F. fighters shot up the bus she was traveling in. (Three passengers died, she said).

Amouna Elhadi sat over her son, Hassan, a 14-year-old shot in the stomach by the mustanfareen , as new youth groups fighting alongside Sudan’s military have become known.

bus tours for seniors with limited mobility

“All his stomach fell out.”

Amouna Elhadi, mother of Hassan, 14.

Mujahid Abdulaziz, however, was smiling.

For 10 weeks, he had been trying to get a bullet removed from his leg. An R.S.F. fighter shot him at a checkpoint after a drone strike on a nearby fuel station killed several other fighters. “The guy was angry,” Mr. Abdulaziz said.

For Mr. Abdulaziz, a 20-year-old engineering student, it was just the start of a torturous search for help.

One hospital patched up his wound, but couldn’t extract the bullet. A second hospital couldn’t, either. He crossed the Nile three times, circling the capital in buses that passed through deserts and around a mountain. Finally, after a journey of 100 miles that should have been 10, he reached Al Nau hospital, where doctors pulled out the bullet, at last.

Not long ago, Mr. Abdulaziz believed he was part of an exciting future. He participated in the euphoric mass protests in 2019 that helped topple President Omar Hassan al-Bashir, Sudan’s autocratic ruler of three decades, a moment of triumph for the country. Two years later, he returned to the streets, defiantly flinging stones at riot police officers following the military coup that set back hopes for civilian rule.

Some protesters now run soup kitchens that provide much of the limited aid available in Khartoum.

But Mr. Abdulaziz just felt defeated.

Before the war, “we were just dreaming,” he said. “Those hopes are gone.”

Clinging to Hope

Mudassir Ibrahim, 50, lifted his shirt to show welts across his back — evidence, he said, of a week spent in R.S.F. detention inside the headquarters of Sudan’s national radio and television station. His captors beat him with iron rods and electrical cables, he said: “It felt like death a thousand times over.”

At the television station in Omdurman, we saw evidence to back his claims. Ropes and other restraints hung from barred rooms in the finance department. Piles of dry excrement were scattered on the floor. Filthy walls were scrawled with names, pleas and snatches of poetry.

“The treachery of your tears is no use to fight injustice,” read one.

“Friends forever” read another, under a list of six names.

Most of the compound stood in ruins. Its main building had been incinerated by airstrikes, while a film archive dating back to the 1940s, one of the largest in Africa, had been blown open by gunfire. The R.S.F. had retreated across the river, soldiers said, but some left behind their own wartime wisdom.

“As long as death is certain,” read a line scrawled on one wall, “don’t live like a coward.” (The R.S.F. did not respond to the allegations of torture and other abuses by its fighters).

As the fighting raged, some Omdurman residents refused to leave. “We were born here, we grew up here, and we will die here,” said Edward Fahmy, 73, sitting in his courtyard of his modest home in the old city, where pictures of Jesus hung on every wall.

Mr. Fahmy and his cousin, Janette Naeim, 50, stayed put even as bombs rained down. Ms. Naeim was hit by a stray bullet as she went to fetch water. When two relatives died, they buried them outside their front door, they said, showing a pair of freshly dug mounds.

Both Orthodox Christians, they are testament to the enduring religious and ethnic diversity of a country whose image was often obscured by three decades of harsh Islamist rule. The war risks washing away that richness as well.

At the Marmina Coptic Orthodox church, shafts of dusty light shone through holes in a rooftop fresco of Jesus, punctured in the fighting. The bishop fled after R.S.F. fighters smashed into his home, firing guns and shouting “Where are the dollars?” said Andrews Hanna, a local businessman.

When Mr. Hanna turned up, an hour later, the floor was smeared with the blood of a priest who had shielded the bishop from rifle blows, he said. Then Mr. Hanna’s factory was raided by fighters who carted away 8,000 motorbikes and rickshaws, he said. Weeks later, his family fled.

photo

“We love this country,” said Mr. Hanna. “The problem is that it has too many armies.”

Sheikh Elamin Omar, a charismatic Sufi cleric in the same part of the city, offered a rare haven from the fighting. “I had to stay,” he said.

He said he sheltered about 1,000 people at his sprawling compound in the old city for over a year.

Families ate from a communal kitchen and fetched water from the Nile, he said, showing us around a mosque, a well-stocked pharmacy and apartments. His followers helped bury the dead, and at night they performed zikir, a devotional dance that is an expression of Sufi spirituality. “It soothed our souls,” he said.

A soup kitchen still offered meals. Sheikh Elamin, a towering man in flowing green robes, said he paid for it all from his own pocket. Beyond running a Sufi Muslim order with branches in London, New York and Dubai, he was also a businessman who owned a gold mine and a meat export business, he said.

Before the war, the sheikh was sometimes criticized for his lavish choices, like chartering a private jet to attend the World Cup in Qatar in 2022. But his charity now has brought praise.

“In this time of war, he’s become the most popular figure in the country — period,” said Suliman Baldo, a veteran Sudan analyst. “People need something positive to hold onto.”

Nearby, we passed a giant mural with the word “Freedom,” leftover from the protests of 2019 and pocked by gunfire. Down the street, men huddled over a pot of bubbling lentils as they prepared to return to their shattered homes — a cautious gesture of hope as the war dragged on.

“We will have a beautiful future, God willing,” said Mahmoud Mustafa, a rickshaw driver clutching a plastic food bowl.

He didn’t even flinch when another artillery barrage rang out, sending more shells across the Nile.

The Militias

Hundreds of black-clad young women, turning in perfect unison, marched through a schoolyard in Omdurman early one morning, the latest recruits in a rapidly expanding conflict.

The war started as a dispute between two men — Sudan’s army chief, Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces leader, Lt. Gen. Mohamed Hamdan. But since last fall, when a succession of R.S.F. victories set off widespread alarm, a proliferation of armed groups has joined the fight, mostly backing the military. There are rebels from Darfur, ethnic militias, Islamists once loyal to former President Bashir, and thousands of young people, women as well as men, recruited from the streets.

Even idealistic young Sudanese who once risked their lives to protest against Mr. Bashir and, later, the military, have joined in.

Whether the militias will decide the war, or cause it to spin entirely out of control, is unclear. Sudan’s military tumbled into the war because it outsourced its fighting to a powerful group, the Rapid Support Forces, that ultimately turned against it.

Now, critics say, the military is in danger of repeating that mistake by empowering more militias.

Even some military leaders are worried. In March, a member of the military high command, Lt. Gen. Shams al-Din al-Kabbashi, warned that, unless the militias were kept in check, “the next danger will come from” them.

Days later he was rebuked by another commander, Lt. Gen. Yasser al-Atta, who said the army “blessed” the popular militias.

“Any mistakes can be corrected as we move forward,” he said.

The Weapons Store

Wooden crates lay scattered across the weapons depot we sifted through next to an abandoned R.S.F. base. Any identifying marks — serial numbers or other clues that showed who had supplied the weapons — had been carefully scraped off. The foreign powers fueling Sudan’s war seemed to be covering their tracks.

Yet traces remain.

American officials have grown increasingly critical of the United Arab Emirates, the war’s biggest foreign sponsor. It has extensive gold and agricultural interests in Sudan, and before the war signed a deal to build a $6 billion port on the Red Sea. Since last year, it has smuggled weapons to the R.S.F. through a base in Chad, in breach of a U.N. arms embargo, The Times reported .

Egypt, by contrast, has backed Sudan’s military. But it is the army’s recent turn to Iran for drones and other weapons that has caused alarm in Washington, several Western officials said.

Russia seems to have helped both sides.

Earlier in the war, Wagner mercenaries supplied the R.S.F. with antiaircraft missiles, U.N. investigators say. Russians later traveled to Khartoum, where they trained fighters to shoot down Sudanese military warplanes, said two senior Sudanese officials who provided the Russians’ names and details of their movements.

Today, nearly two dozen Wagner operatives remain in the capital, mostly Libyan and Syrian recruits, flying drones and firing mortars for the R.S.F., the Sudanese said.

The Russian presence even spurred Ukraine to deploy a small team of special forces to counter its nemesis abroad by helping the Sudanese military in Khartoum.

But Russia’s posture may have changed since the death of Wagner’s founder , Yevgeny V. Prigozhin. Following a visit to Port Sudan by Russia’s Middle East envoy in April, a top Sudanese general said recently that Sudan was prepared to allow Russian naval access to its ports, a longstanding desire for Moscow, in exchange for arms and ammunition.

The foreign meddling is frustrating American- and Saudi-led diplomacy to reach a cease-fire, though critics say even those efforts to save Sudan have been shamefully weak. The country, they warn, is barreling into a protracted conflict that could lead to anarchy or rival fiefs, like Somalia in the 1990s or Libya after 2011 .

The war could easily spill beyond Sudan’s borders. It is already causing tensions inside the security services of Chad, and has cut off vital oil revenues for South Sudan. Now it risks sucking in Ethiopia, Africa’s second-most populous country.

Sudanese officials accuse Ethiopia of backing the R.S.F. Meanwhile, Eritrea, Ethiopia’s traditional enemy, has sided with Sudan’s military. And thousands of rebels from Ethiopia’s restive Tigray region are stationed at a camp in eastern Sudan, officials and aid groups said — part of a combustible mix that threatens to open a new front in the war.

Some Sudanese in exile desperately want the outside world to intervene. But so far, they say, it’s only made things worse.

“It’s sheer madness,” said Ibrahim Elbadawi, a former economy minister now in Cairo, calling for a U.N. peacekeeping force to save his country from collapse.
