Bob Dylan Adds Dates to 2023 Rough and Rowdy Ways Tour

by Matt Friedlander October 4, 2023, 3:16 pm

Earlier this week, Bob Dylan launched a new North American leg of his ongoing tour in support of his 2020 studio album, Rough and Rowdy Ways , and now the folk-rock legend has tacked on a series of new dates to the end of the trek.

Videos by American Songwriter

Seven new shows have been added to the tour, spanning from a November 24-25 stand in Baltimore through a December 2 performance in Evansville, Indiana. The trek also will be stopping in Richmond and Roanoke, Virginia; Huntington, West Virginia; and Richmond, Kentucky.

Tickets for the new concerts will go on sale to the general public on Friday, October 6, at 10 a.m. local, while some presale tickets will be available on October 5 starting at 10 a.m. local time.

Dylan kicked off the Rough and Rowdy Ways Tour in 2021, and he has plans to continue the trek into next year.

He began the new leg with an October 1-2 engagement in Kansas City, Missouri. The shows featured renditions of nearly every song from Rough and Rowdy Ways , as well as such gems from his back catalog as “Watching the River Flow,” “When I Paint My Masterpiece,” “I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight,” and “Gotta Serve Somebody.” Dylan also played the Buddy Holly classic “Not Fade Away” on October 1 and the Johnny Mercer standard “That Old Black Magic” on October 2.

Before kicking of the latest series of shows, Dylan made a surprise appearance at the 2023 Farm Aid benefit concert on September 23 in Noblesville, Indiana. Taking the stage without any introduction, he played a three-song set backed by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell, keyboardist Benmont Tench, and drummer Steve Ferrone, as well as two members of Campbell’s current band The Dirty Knobs.

The performance saw Dylan playing guitar onstage for the first time in seven years, and featured the songs “Maggie’s Farm,” “Positively 4th Street,” and “Ballad of a Thin Man.” It also marked Dylan’s first performance at Farm Aid since the inaugural event in 1985.

Meanwhile, while Dylan is out on the road, a new box set titled The Complete Budokan 1978 will be released on November 17. The live collection will feature recordings of every song from his February 28 and March 1, 1978, concerts at the famous Tokyo venue.

You can check out a version of “The Man in Me” from the box set at Dylan’s official YouTube channel .

Bob Dylan 2023 tour memory and 2024 tour dates.

bob dylan 2023 tour rumors

A Rolling Stone Gathers No Moss . By Kim Pool

“Why are we going to see an 80 year old sing anyway?” my dad asked. “Because he’s Bob Dylan,” I said, “And he could pass any day.”

We were on the way to Kansas City to see Bob Dylan at the Midland Theater in 2023. My dad, who grew up with hair metal bands like Def Leppard, had not yet been enlightened with the Knowledge of Dylan. (In fact, he found out that evening in the car ride to the show that Dylan had just turned 82, hence his astonishment).

It was the opening night of the 2023 leg of the Rough and Rowdy Ways tour, which Dylan had been touring on since 2021, supporting his most recent album Rough and Rowdy Ways.

In January, Dylan announced that he would be going on tour again in 2024, which resumed earlier this month in March. For 2023, Dylan kicked off his tour in Kansas City (which had me starstruck since that was pretty much like seeing him play in my backyard). He played October 1 and 2 in KC.

I scored tickets for opening night the day they went on sale. Both my parents thought I was insane, but there was no way in hell I was going to miss seeing Bob Dylan live. I had no idea what to expect for the setlist. I had heard rumors that at a Bob Dylan concert, one does not know what song he is performing until about halfway through when someone catches and recognizes a line here or there and goes, “Ah, he is playing this one. . .”

Before the show, I had briefly checked out a few tracks from his album Rough and Rowdy Ways, but I didn’t dare check out the setlists from the prior leg. To preview a previous setlist felt blasphemous, like peeking behind the curtain and seeing Oz is just an ordinary man. Dylan warned ahead of time that photos and videos were prohibited. The Midland Theatre exuded elegance. Copper and gold walls towered above. I held my breath as I walked in and we found our seats on the upper balcony.

FULL SHOW AUDIO:

Dylan opened the set with a surprising cover of Little Willie Littlefield ’s “Kansas City.” This was the first time Dylan had ever played this song live, and it struck me with a chord of amusement. Half of the setlist was songs from Dylan’s Rough and Rowdy Ways album. In fact, he played nearly the entire album except for “Murder Most Foul.” Dylan played mostly on baby grand piano and the occasional harmonica, not picking up a guitar once. I had somehow failed to realize that Dylan is pretty awesome on piano.

Dylan has never had a conventional voice; however, in my opinion no one can sing like Dylan. The emotions his voice conveys are unreplicatable. At 80 years old, Dylan is still rocking and rolling, although in a different format of piano and a more perhaps relaxed ‘jazzy’ vibe. Dylan, the man who has reinvented himself multiple times throughout the last sixty years, is someone who I think will ultimately spend his final hour on stage. The man just keeps rolling.

I have seen other aging rockers before – but the atmosphere of Dylan felt nearly church-like. The indoor intimacy of the venue sent shivers down my spine. The crowd applauded and cheered throughout the set; otherwise, the atmosphere stalled in awe. Magic sprung to life on the stage down below. Dylan preached his sermons of history and heartbreak, of love and loss.

The set ended with “Every Grain of Sand,” one of his spiritual ballads. I left that night with a smile on my face. Dylan’s music is good for the soul because it envelops the soul. His sixty year long career is a candle that still burns brightly, long into the night.

After following Dylan since the early 60s, I finally got to see him at his age of 78! I was super glad to be able to say I saw him. He sang quite a few songs, one right after another and most of them were done fast. The most popular ones that I could decipher had the words right, but the music part of it was very, very different. He did not do his most popular songs over the years. He did what he wanted to do. I was able to recognize 3 songs that I knew well, the others I had heard, but weren't really my favorites. I was just glad he (talked) sang. He did not interact with the audience, he wasn't announced at the beginning, and when he was done he walked off stage. One encore and off again. He did introduce the individual musicians, but it was so fast, I couldn't keep up. No one I recognized. I love him no matter what he chose to do or not do. The Bren Event Center in Irvine holds about 5500 and it was full. Tickets were expensive for me, but I just had to see him live even if I would have had to sell my first born, lol. I'll be paying off my credit card for the charge in 6 months. Good times.

Unlike many of the fans at Bob Dylan’s show I haven’t seen him countless times. I think I have been to four or five of his shows over a wide span in his career.

My first live experience was in the early seventies at the Los Angeles Forum. I think he was backed by The Band if I remember correctly. It was a great show, I had great seats that were a result of a ticket lottery I think? He sounded just like he did, more or less, on his records.

I think the next time I saw him was at the LA Greek Theatre. A friend and I took a chance and went without tickets in hand. We were very lucky that night scoring tickets that were released from the band just before the show started. We were down front and center. This show was during the G.E. Smith period. I’m sad to say that I was disappointed in this show. Mr. Dylan and his songs were almost unrecognizable to me as I remember. I wasn’t yet able to appreciate the concept of a performer changing their presentations from how they were originally offered. That concept took me a while to appreciate and now I think that I expect it from great performers. But that night not at all...

My next chance to see him was at a remarkable show at UCLA. It was an extravaganza featuring Mr. Dylan, Van Morrison and Joni Mitchell. Three of my musical touchstones. I don’t remember much about this show except we had horrible seats. I think I was mostly affected by the overall show and that I was actually there seeing these three back to back.

Last night seeing him at UCI was very special indeed. My new girlfriend managed to get us very good seats in this small venue, stage right and up above the floor. Due to the security check in we entered the show halfway through the first song, on stage as we searched for our seats was a man playing guitar, we wondered if this was an opening act since we had been led to believe that Mr. Dylan no longer played guitar and this fellow was quite lively on stage as well, belying the stories told to me of his previously aloofness on stage. As we sat we realized that no this was the man. It was a wonderful lead in for me. He played a set that included songs from all of his era’s. Most reinterpreted greatly as far as the music but mostly true to the prose I think. Somewhere in the middle he slowed things down from the energetic pace to give an almost traditional rendition of Girl from the North Country, strikingly beautiful featuring him on the piano primarily. What a night! Mr. Dylan has still got the magic touch in my book, how he continues on the hard life of the road is a testament to his love of what he does I guess. I’m glad he does. Thanks Mr Dylan.

show in Ft. Myers.

First of all, the sound system was terrible. You could understand about every 10th word. Otherwise, it was just a blur and the arrangements were such that they had no relevance to the songs. Maybe a couple of notes. I had to ask my lady, "What song is this?" She answered,"Blowing in the Wind". Weelllll, I have been listening to that song for over 40 years!! I had no idea he was singing that!

Ok, Dylan is Dylan. He will mix up the instruments, but here, along with the vocals on the worst sound system I have heard in years; combined with the worst arrangements, I had no idea what he was singing almost all of the time.

Still, I really liked going. It's probably the last time I will be able to see him in person. He coulda just stood on stage and burped and it would have been worth it. He had long haired women dancing in the iles. Not his women, the audience women(hopefully). Lot of gray hair there in my fellow concert-goers when I looked around but, on the whole, I am really glad I went. I am sure they were too. Whoever reads this; you should go too......Frederick(Rick) H Johnson

Bob Dylan’s Bootleg Series Is ‘Definitely Winding Down’

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Over the past 32 years, Bob Dylan ‘s Bootleg Series has proved that the singer’s studio albums represent just a tiny fraction of his musical output. Some of the releases in the series spotlight key concerts from tours like his 1966 European run with the Hawks or the 1975 Rolling Thunder Revue, but most of them focus on albums — both loved and unloved — to let listeners in on Dylan’s creative process and show just how much stunning material he discards along the way.

The newest set, Fragments — Time Out of Mind Sessions 1996-1997 , is the 17th volume, and a source close to the Bob Dylan camp says we’re unlikely to see many more. “We have no idea what’s next,” says the source. “We’re at a loss. We don’t know. Let’s see how the market receives this one. But the Bootleg Series is definitely winding down.”

Another possible release ties into Dylan’s 1978 world tour and Street Legal studio sessions. The only official live release from the tour is Bob Dylan at Budokan , first released that same year, which catches the 114-date tour in its earliest form, before the band gelled. Bootlegs from later shows are significantly better. “We don’t have a lot of good tapes of the ’78 tour,” says the source. “There’s something coming. The ’78 tour will be revisited at some point in the future. I’m not at liberty to say how.” It won’t, however, be a film. “I wish there was a movie,” says the source. “But there’s very little footage.”

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

One seemingly obvious focus of a future Bootleg Series box set is the Never Ending Tour, which kicked off in 1988 and is still running today after more than 3,000 concerts. The Dylan vault is overflowing with tapes from these years, but don’t expect to hear any of them any time soon. “The Never Ending Tour, which it was never really called, is still going,” says the source. “It’s the Rough and Rowdy Ways tour now. The time to look back on it will be many years from now.”

Next year, meanwhile, is the 50th anniversary of Planet Waves and Dylan’s reunion tour with the Band. Could we see a huge box set of recordings from that tour? “That’s going to be up to Sony,” says the source. “We’ll see what they want to do.”

“Bob is out there doing it live,” says the source. “I suggest people should see him. I think he’s playing some of the best shows of his career.”

Wouldn’t it be great to give fans a chance to hear those shows in pristine sound and end the circulation of sub-par audience recordings? “The people who want bootlegs, have them,” says the source. “We don’t have that much in pristine sound anyway. Bruce and his guys spend a lot of time on that. We don’t really have that.”

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Matty Healy appears to have popped the all-important question to his girlfriend Gabbriette Bechtel.

The model, 26, showed off a massive diamond ring on that finger in images shared on her Instagram Story Tuesday night.

“Marrying the 1975 is very brat @trumanblack,” she captioned a snap of her hand adorned with the ring, which featured a black rock encrusted with diamonds.

Matty Healy and model Gabbriette Bechtel kiss in NYC.

Healy, who is the frontman of The 1975, has yet to confirm the news.

However, he re-shared Bechtel’s photo to his own Instagram Story shortly after she posted.

In another image, Bechtel flashed her ring finger in a mirror selfie after watching her pal Charli XCX’s Brat tour in New York City.

Page Six has reached out to Bechtel and Healy’s reps for comment.

Gabbriette Bechtel shows off her ring on her Instagram Story.

The influencer, who is featured in Charli XCX’s “360” video, a track from the singer’s new “Brat” album, was joined by Kanye West’s ex Julia Fox at the gig.

Bechtel, who is lead singer of punk rock band Nasty Cherry, has been romantically linked to the “Somebody Else” hitmaker since September 2023.

While it’s unclear how the pair met, it’s possible they were introduced through their mutual pal and The 1975 drummer George Daniel, who is engaged to Charlie XCX, who is Nasty Cherry’s founder.

Taylor Swift and Matty Healy seen leaving 'The Electric Lady' studio in Manhattan on May 16, 2023.

Before kickstarting a romance with Healy, Bechtel dated Levi Dylan, Bob Dylan’s grandson.

Healy’s romance with the model comes on the heels of his high-profile  relationship with Taylor Swift .

News of the  short-lived romance  broke in May 2023, not long after the “Cruel Summer” singer  split from longtime boyfriend Joe Alwyn .

Healy, 35, and Swift, who have known each other since 2014, called it quits over scheduling conflicts and incompatibility ,  according to “Entertainment Tonight.”

While the pair’s romance only lasted about a month, Healy was reportedly the muse behind some of the tracks from Swift’s “The Tortured Poets Department”  album, released in April.

Although the record  features songs  about Alwyn  and current  boyfriend Travis Kelce , many appeared to reference her and Healy’s fling.

He is believed to be the subject of “Down Bad,” “But Daddy I Love Him” and “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived.”

When asked about the album by a paparazzo shortly after its release, Healy  claimed to not have “really listened  to that much of it,” adding that he’s “sure it’s good.”

Prior to his romance with the 13-time Grammy winner, Healy was  romantically linked  to Halsey and FKA Twigs.
