Blackberry Smoke Announce Dates for Fall Headlining Tour

By Joseph Hudak

Joseph Hudak

Since releasing their most recent studio album Find a Light last year, Blackberry Smoke have been on the road seemingly nonstop, including a stripped-down acoustic run in support of their Southern Ground Sessions EP. With dates scheduled throughout the summer with Tedeschi Trucks Band and Shovels & Rope, the band will also launch a headlining run in the fall.

The Till the Wheels Fall Off Tour — named after a song on Find a Light — begins September 19th in Asheville, North Carolina , as part of the Orange Peel Outdoor Concert Series. Blues-rock band the Record Company, who released All of This Life last summer, will open the tour.

Blackberry Smoke’s Charlie Starr told Rolling Stone in 2018 that he was hopeful that fans of all stripes would find common ground on Find a Light .

“People waste so much energy trying to sway another person’s opinion about everything, to the point where people get so angry at another person for what they believe, or for what their opinion is. It really just seems ridiculous,” he said. “I’m just like, ‘Who gives a shit? If you like buttermilk and I don’t, good for you. Enjoy your buttermilk.'”

Along with their fall tour, Blackberry Smoke will also appear at September 20th’s Bourbon and Beyond festival in Louisville, Kentucky, and at the Exit 111 festival in Manchester, Tennessee, headlined by Lynyrd Skynyrd, Def Leppard and Guns N’ Roses.

Here are Blackberry Smoke’s Till the Wheels Fall Off Tour dates: September 19 — Asheville, NC @ Orange Peel Outdoor Concert Series September 21 — Northfield, OH @ MHM Northfield Park – Center Stage September 22 — Grand Rapids, MI @ 20 Monroe Live September 24 — Madison, WI @ The Sylvee September 26 — St. Paul, MN @ Palace Theatre September 29 — Des Moines, IA @ Hoyt Sherman Place October 1 — Springfield, MO @ Gillioz Theatre October 2 — Oklahoma City, OK @ Diamond Ballroom October 4 — Birmingham, AL @ Avondale Brewing Company October 5 — Savannah, GA @ Johnny Mercer Theater

Blackberry Smoke Announce 2021/2022 Tour Dates

Matt Kolbe

Acclaimed country rock band Blackberry Smoke is returning to the road this year in a big way with the recent announcements of TWO full tours. First up is their “Spirit of the South Tour: A Celebration of Southern Rock N’ Roll,” which will commemorate various influential Southern rock acts. This tour will feature The Allman Betts Band , The Wild Feathers and a mobile exhibit from The Allman Brothers Band Museum at the Big House. The tour begins June 25th and ends August 28th with venues primarily in the South and Northeast.

After that is the “You Hear Georgia Tour” that will run from August 31st to next April. It will kick off in Columbus, OH at The Athenaeum Theater and continue in the US. Starting in October Blueberry Smoke will travel over seas to Europe, eventually heading back to the US next spring. Tickets are on sale now.

This year is special for the band as their 20th year together and with the recent release of their LP, You Hear Georgia . This album pays tribute to Southern rock and the Georgia sound and is “a wonderful blend of blues, rock and country from start to finish,” according to Outsider.

With the pandemic winding down, Blackberry Smoke is excited to get back to touring, like many artists today. “We are long overdue to get out to these great places and see some friends, family, brothers and sisters that we have really missed,” says lead singer Charlie Starr. “It’s going to be extra special playing these big rock n’ roll shows again!”

Jamey Johnson Reveals Summer Tour in the United States in 2022 With Blackberry Smoke

Jamey Johnson Tour 2022

This summer, Jamey Johnson will tour alongside longtime pals Blackberry Smoke as a co-headlining act. On some dates, Ella Langley and Megan Moroney will provide support for the 19-show trek.

The tour kicks off on August 12 in Lincoln, Nebraska. Shows are scheduled for August 13 in Mankato, Minnesota; August 16 in Maryland Heights, Missouri; August 18 in Wichita, Kansas; and August 19 in Camdenton, Missouri.

On August 20, Jamey Johnson and Blackberry Smoke will bring the tour to Little Rock, Arkansas. The tour then proceeds to Brandon, Mississippi, on August 21 and Southaven, Mississippi, on August 23. Then it’s on to Franklin, Tennessee, on August 25, with stops in Raleigh, Charlotte, and Greensboro, North Carolina, on August 26 and 27, respectively. Buy Tickets From Here

The tour’s September leg kicks off on September 1 in Anderson, South Carolina. Additional September performances will be held on September 2 in Doswell, Virginia; September 3 in North Charleston, South Carolina; September 4 in Portsmouth, Virginia; September 8 in Pittsburgh; September 9 in Sterling Heights, Michigan; and September 11 in Columbus.

What can we anticipate from the tour, according to Johnson:

“Until I’m standing there doing it, I have no idea what I’m going to do.” The ability to attempt something new has always been a source of liberation for me since I started doing this. You’ll watch me perform several of my songs, including those from my past.

If I have a new song to offer, you will be the first to hear it. When I’m not performing my own songs, I’ll be performing everyone else’s that I enjoy in whatever format. Get Cheapest Tickets From Here

We’ll put a jazz song in there if I discover one I like. We’ll do it if I discover a rock tune I like. My style is retro and traditional, but it doesn’t mean that everything I do is vintage.

There are a lot of young authors putting out fantastic music these days that I think is in the same style as the old stuff I adore, so we could attempt some of that.”

The tour will also include Ella Langley and Megan Maroney as openers.

On-sale tickets will go on sale tomorrow (April 22) at 10 a.m. local venue time. Ticketmaster has the majority of Jamey Johnson and Blackberry Smoke show tickets. Buy Tickets From Here

Blackberry Smoke are a rock band hailing from Atlanta, Georgia, United States who formed in 2000. Since their debut in 2004 they have become one of the most acclaimed, respected and succesful southern rock bands of the 21st century, and have released four studio albums.

It would be easy to classify Blackberry Smoke as throwbacks. A band that used to weep themselves to sleep every night about how they didn’t form in 1972 until they took a stand and decided to make the 21st century sound as much like the seventies as they could. However, the band are a little more complex than that. The band was formed around the friendship between singer Charlie Starr and guitarist Paul Jackson, who met in LaGrange, Georgia and became gig buddies in short order. The two would head down to the state capital of Atlanta to see bands play, and it was there that they met brothers Brit and Richard Turner, who know play drums and bass respectively. Each of them had been playing their instruments since they were children, and eventually, the four piece got around to jamming together.

Soon enough, Brandon Still joined on the keys and the band made their live debut in 2000, playing anywhere that would have them. They spent the first three years of their existence playing live around the Atlanta rock scene, before signing to Cock Of The Walk records in 2003 and releasing their debut album “Bad Luck Ain’t No Crime” in January of the following year. Since then they’ve supported practically every southern rock band of note that’s still going, from ZZ Top to Lynyrd Skynyrd themselves. They’ve even started to see some well deserved commercial success come their way, with their third album “The Whippoorwill” charting in the top ten of the Billboard country album charts. Its follow up, 2015’s “Holding All The Roses” did even better by hurtling into the number one spot on its first week of release. They’re the next generation of classic American rock music, and for that, they come highly recommended.

Live reviews

Blackberry Smoke have made a major impact among the rock fraternity in the UK during the last 12 months, following the release of their most recent studio CD, "The Whippoorwill". Its the last night of half a dozen dates and although some new songs are reported from earlier dates we are treated to the tried and trusted tonight.

This is their second tour here this year and while they are promoting their recent live release "Leave a Scar - Live", their set is dominated by material from their most recent studio CD.

The "Institute" in Birmingham turns out to be what I have always known as "Digbeth Civic Hall", but time waits for no man so I need to get used to its current name. In addition to the stalls it has 2 balcony levels (to assist short people like myself, who want to actually see the band) and has a capacity of around 1,200, or so I`m told.

Before the headliners take to the stage we are treated to an appearance from up and coming blues rock starlet Aaron Keylock, which warms the audience up nicely. The 3 piece band race through a short set of original material, dominated by Keylock's searing guitar. He likes his "bottle neck" and songs like opener "Medicine Man" feature it strongly. Definitely one to look out for.

By the time Blackberry Smoke hit the stage with "Like I Am" the place looks full to bursting and the band get a great reception. The music is "Southern Rock" more in the 70's "Skynerd" style than, say heavier 21st century proponents like "Blackstone Cherry", with a nod towards the blues and more than a nod towards country music.

The band continue with "Testify" from "Bad Luck Ain't No Crime", their first full length CD album, recorded before keyboardist Brandon Still had joined. The stand out track on that release, the addition of the glorious B3 sound has transformed it into an anthem.

The set races along, dipping into the "Honky Tonk Bootlegs" mini LP and their 3rd release "Little Piece Of Dixie" for nuggets like "Lesson in a Bottle", "Restless" and the hard hitting "Up in Smoke" which has the crowd bouncing around in the stalls.

Charlie Starr is a "star"; the main songwriter in the band, he handles lead vocals and most of the lead guitar. His voice is perfect for the style of music being played, from the hard rockers to the country flavoured ballads that are featured in the second half of the set and he is ably assisted by guitarist Paul Jackson who handles solo's and dual lead with Charlie when called upon.

Paul and bassist Rich Turner provide backing vocals and harmonies and these are an important part of the group's sound. It is particularly evident from songs like the meandering "The Whippoorwill" that the band work hard on their arrangements, with the instrumentation complementing the song perfectly.

Rich and his brother Britt (looks nothing like his namesake Ekland) combine to form a solid rhythm section and the aforementioned Brandon Still adds B3 and piano to give the sound richness and depth.

The band are up for having a bit of fun and slip in a verse of the Allman's "Midnight Rider" during "Sleepin' Dogs" as is their habit and introduce some of the songs with short stories, including recollection of a meeting with the country rockers the "Maverick's" that left its mark on all concerned before "Lesson in a Bottle".

Catchy songs like "Pretty Little Lie" and "One Horse Town" are further highlights and Charlie switches to acoustic guitar for "Ain't Got the Blues", with its almost Honky tonk feel.

The main set builds to its climax with the powerful "Ain't Much Left Of Me", all slide guitar and a verse from "When the Levee Breaks" and the lads leave to rapturous applause and cheering.

The band return and play an encore set, featuring two of the best known songs from the "Whippoorwell" CD, the up tempo "Leave a Scar" and "Shakin' Hands with the Holy Ghost", the song that first obtained radio airplay for them in the UK, leaving the crowd in high spirits at the close.

Blackberry Smoke have come from nowhere to being a genuine concert draw in the UK in little over a year. Their last 2 CD`s, "Whippoorwill" and "Leave a Scar - Live" showcase their ability to write good songs and arrange them well - seeing them live confirms that they are the real deal!

In general they're good fun, have personality, a good groove and are good value. I enjoyed the rehearsed "improvised jams," especially the Led Zep snippets, but I'm a fairly frequent gig goer and this year and have been lucky enough to see some amazing gigs, and this one felt a little flat to me. The latest album; left me a little underwhelmed tbh and having seen them 3 times in three years I think perhaps the novelty is beginning to wear a little thin for me. Maybe its the 'London factor' but having seen the Smoke in Manchester last year they just don't seem to play with the same verve and intensity in the capital. As a tinnitus sufferer the volume and acoustics didn't help performance and they fairly rattled through the set with not much in the way of between song banter or interplay with the crowd. It wasn't a bad gig just a little muted, I left during the first song of the encore in time to get the last train home and hope I didn't miss something special. Perhaps tiredness was a factor given the fact that they tour almost constantly? I think I will give the next London gig a miss and maybe try and catch them at another venue. 7/10

The warm up bands were ok, not sure if I'd buy their cd's, but it was worth listening to as a warm up. As for Blackberry Smoke, they were a tremendous experience. I was a little disappointed they didn't play one of my favorite songs by them. Sense they have such a large selection of quality work, and a finite performance time, I understand that they couldn't play everything of theirs. I got to meet Charlie briefly before the concert, very nice guy. I am a new BBS fan, which amazes me as to the length of time they've been performing and not popped up on my radar before now. I was raised in the south, and I see their southern charm and manners shine through in their interviews, and even their performances. I hope they keep their humility and politeness in what I am sure to be a very successful career. I talked to some of their more seasoned fans, and the thing that comes through is BBS are "performers"! As a side note, they were awesome in improving their music, straying from their music to "The Beatles White Album, Why Don't we do it in the Road", to some Led Zeppelin stuff. How many ways can you say "awesome concert"?

Blackberry Smoke I’m assuming aren’t talking about the Blackberry phones with their name surely? Nope. They bring to the table a very distinct southern rock with the grittiest vocals and guitar sound. Their music is so catchy, this whole atmosphere feels like a party, with maybe four thousand people watching them, all of which are dancing and singing along, with at least one drink in their hands. I’ve got to give it to this band, they just know exactly what they’re doing with the tightest sound and some of the most soulful lead breaks from the both guitarists and keyboard players.

It almost feels like a country and western musical with the variety of songs that they play despite all being that of a country vibe. Some personal highlights for me this evening are songs such as “Shakin Hands with The Holy Ghost”, and “One Horse Town” every song being as good as the last.

When I read that BS were playing as close to me as Newcastle, I just had to go. I took my 17 year old daughter who was probably the youngest at the show.

When the guys came on stage and started off with Holy Ghost it set the show off in style. What a bunch of musicians these guys are and not a hint of a voice synthesiser anywhere. These are the real deal and not like the manufactured pop rubbish we get thrown down our necks on the radio!

Take my word for it, BS will go all the way to the top. Not a big head in sight, just an honest set of guys doing what they do best.

Minimal talking from Charlie Starr, just a quick thank you and on to the next song.

I think the band were taken back by the amount of noise we made and the knowledge we had of the lyrics (it's a long way from Atlanta to the North East).

This is a band not to be missed!!

DO NOT be afraid of "labels" and go see this Band!! BBS will kick your butt from here (where ever that may be) to Georgia and back and you'll be a better person for it. There has been a grassroots resurgence of Straight up good Rock n' Roll going on for awhile now and BBS are one of the bands leading the march. IMO the first band to actually deserve to be considered a viable candidate to step up and fill the hole left by the original line up of LYNYRD SKYNYRD. That being said, BBS is more akin to AEROSMITH. As there is a "Edge" to them that maybe SKYNYRD only showed in songs like "Gimme back my Bullets"?

Great musicians, great songs, catchy hooks and all played with a swagger that has been missing in real rock music for a very long time. Go see them Live and you will be convinced within the first song.

These guys have a good time. Plain and simple, the love for playing music is not lost on this group of artists. From the start of the show until the end every member of Blackberry Smoke can't frown from grinin'. This is passed on to anyone in the crowd willing to appreciate it. They ripped through gem after gem after gem from their songbook. Sprinkling in some new songs that, I'll be honest, sound much better live than on the album. Blackberry Smoke makes their own formula of the southern rock show, but at times are reminded of their roots and influences. They got the Led out and turned to 11. I really like a Blackberry Smoke show. If you want to have fun for a few hours and enjoy rock n roll, catch them when you can.

In a sold out hmv ritz in manchester, the support was from the fantastic blues 16 year old singer aaron keylock, this young gentleman is destined for great things. Then on came blackberry smoke, what can be said about these guys, fantastic musicianship, not a note and vocal out of place. Southern country/rock at its best, all the classic songs by these guys were played. These guys have been going for just over 10 Years and hail from Atlanta, Georgia and are beginning to get radio play and quite a following on these shores.

Jamey Johnson, Blackberry Smoke Announce Joint Tour

Trigger News Blackberry Smoke , Charlie Starr , Ella Langley , George Jones , Jamey Johnson , Megan Moroney --> 27 Comments

blackberry smoke tour 2022 opening act

Boy, this will be fun. And it’s kind of crazy to think that it’s never really happened before to this extent. But finally, these two titans of Southern music will be joining forces for a full blown 19-date tour, and with a couple of openers as well. This is sure to be a hot ticket. Blackberry Smoke and Jamey Johnson have been chummy for years, and have gone on smaller tour stints together in the past. In fact, these moments have resulted in some important collaborations between the two. In 2009 while on tour with Jamey Johnson, Charlie Starr of Blackberry Smoke got the idea of recording the song “Yesterday’s Wine” with Jamey after hearing the George Jones and Merle Haggard version of it. They ended up recording it with George Jones also appearing on the track, and it became a bonus track on their 2009 album Little Piece of Dixie . Then in 2012, Charlie Starr got word that George Jones was recording a final album, and wrote the song “Lonesome for a Livin’” for it. But George passed before he could record it. Then in 2018, Blackberry Smoke and Jamey Johnson were on tour together once again, and Charlie Starr was hanging out on Jamey Johnson’s bus with Jamey and Jamey’s dad, who mentioned how he loved the Jamey/Charlie/George Jones version of “Yesterday’s Wine,” and suggested Jamey and Charlie record another song together. The two then recorded “Lonesome for a Livin'” in tribute to George Jones, which appeared on Blackberry Smoke’s 2021 album You Hear Georgia . It’s probably a good bet you’ll be able to see Jamey Johnson and Charlie Starr sing “Yesterday’s Wine” and/or “Lonesome for a Livin'” on this upcoming tour. And who knows what new collaboration might come out of the two while being in close quarters once again. Joining them on the tour that will snake throughout the Midwest and South will be Alabama born, and Nashville-based up-and-coming singer Ella Langley, and Georgia born, and Nashville-based up-and-coming singer Megan Moroney. Blackberry Smoke also just recently surprise released a 7-song album called Stoned covering a handful of Rolling Stone classics. I am a fan of both I just wish Jamey would release new music, I have something to tell people who are thinking about buying the blackberry smoke album STONED. I usually go to Amazon just to see what fans think of the album, not that it makes up my mind, but just to see what other people are thinking, and I am not talking about trolls, the 1 star idiots who hate some one, I am talking about multiple reviews that gave the album 1 star, because many people say who bought the album which is LP only on Amazon, say side A skips alot, and there are many reviewers who are saying this, so becareful. If trigger wants to look into this then cool, but buyer beware, I personally love blackberry smoke, but I would skip on this one.

' src=

I own the Stoned vinyl. Not only is there nothing wrong with it, it’s a great album that was recorded live in one take. You are dead wrong by claiming “buyer beware”

Then tell that to all the Amazon customers who did have that problem. Just because you didn’t have the problem does not mean I am dead wrong. How childish can you be.

' src=

Girls, Girls… you’re both pretty. Record Store Day people ran a run that was most definitely damaged. if anyone has one…. return it to the place you purchased. Just like if you buy a defective _________. We have just rerun the vinyl and it is now available on Blackberrysmoke.com tested and approved.

There’s nothing childish about what I said but go ahead and keep crying.

' src=

I think it’s time to retract your ‘dead wrong’ and apologize. Both of your posts are very childish. Show some decorum.

' src=

two of my all time favs. this is a dream team tour.

' data-tf-not-load src=

As someone who catches BBS every chance I get, and seeing two shows in Missouri, I am hesitant to pull the trigger on tickets. With an opening band, this may be more of a showcase for Jamey, with BBS relegated to more of a support role.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Nah…your looking into shit way to deep man.

Maybe. But if you go to BBS website and click on tickets, Ticketmaster lists it as a Jamey Johnson show.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Yeah, its technically a joint tour, but probably not a true “co-headliner” where there the headlining act flip/flops each night. In all the advertisements I’ve seen, Jamey has top billing. So Blackberry Smoke will likely provide more of an supporting role and Jamey will close out the show. I’m sure BBS will have solid playtime though since this is a joint tour. When I saw Jamey and Whiskey Myers on their joint tour last year, Whiskey played first, but had about 12 songs in their setlist, if I remember correctly.

Based on your comment, I went ahead and got tickets. I am hoping they end the night with everyone on stage.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Absolutely NOT! Jamey Johnson wouldn’t allow that to happen. They have multiple collaborations & it’s a sure bet that both will be on the stage a large majority of the show…BANK ON IT

' data-tf-not-load src=

BBS’s drummer is not on the tour (heart condition) so they are all acoustic and it is incredible. Jamey joins them for a song and they join Jamey for a few songs. One of the best concerts I’ve seen in a long time. Well worth it

Blackberry Smoke did not just release a Rolling Stone cover album. They RE-released it. It was originally put out on indie record store day last November. All they did for this pressing was change the color of vinyl, no new songs.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Had the pleasure of seeing Jamey Johnson and R. Houser, April 1st. Excellent acoustic concert. Houser was an unexpected vocal dynamo. Johnson has a very dry wit, & smart (fun) mouth. Right up my alley.

' data-tf-not-load src=

No Texas?!!!!

' data-tf-not-load src=

I’m just seeing the tracklist for the Stones covers CD (Stoned) and I’m intrigued as hell. Particularly side A (All Down the Line, Sway (!) and Can’t You Hear Me Knocking).

I bought this album back in November and haven’t stopped listing since, awesome album!

Damn, Sway? Now I’m interested.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Thanks for posting. Didn’t know about the album of Stones covers, so I just downloaded it.

' data-tf-not-load src=

I’m very excited for this one. I catch Jamey Johnson every chance I get, but lately it’s been acoustic shows at the local Hard Rock Cafe. Even the Farm Aid performances I’ve seen in person have been acoustic. I don’t think I’ve seen him with a band (without Alison Krauss) in a proper concert setting in 12 years.

' data-tf-not-load src=

is JJ ever gonna do a new album? Kinda lazy if you ask me, is he still blaming a “brain injury?” for his lack of writing?

Eh.. I’d prefer he not release another a full album of original material if he does not believe it’ll be up to par with his previous work. If he’s not feeling it and phoning it in, then the listeners will notice.

' data-tf-not-load src=

So disappointed that there are no Alabama dates considering it is Jamey’s home state.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Blackberry Smoke is also playing Firewater in La Cygne, KS (Kansas City) on 9/30. Firewater has an awesome southern rock lineup this year.

Turnpike Troubadours Announce Arena Show In Oklahoma City With Blackberry Smoke and Morgan Wade

blackberry smoke tour 2022 opening act

What a damn lineup…

Turnpike Troubadours are officially heading back to their home state for a show in Oklahoma City, with Blackberry Smoke and Morgan Wade opening the show on November 12th at the Paycom Center.

Fans had been begging for them to return to Oklahoma, after they did their official reunion show in Tulsa at Cain’s Ballroom, and they’re delivering in a huge way with an absolutely stellar lineup.

Of course, they’ve been selling tickets like crazy  since they got the band back together, but I have a feeling these won’t last long at all.

Tickets go on sale this Friday at 10am, so my advice is to be ready when they go live and hope for the best:

“Oklahoma City! We’re returning on Nov 12th for a massive show at the Paycom Center. We’ll be joined by two of our favorite acts, Blackberry Smoke and Morgan Wade.

Venue Pre-Sale begins tomorrow at 10 am CT and the show goes on sale Friday at 10 am CT.”

They have shows coming up in Atlanta, GA on October 29th, two shows in Nashville at the Ryman Auditorium  July 29th-30th, one in  Raleigh, NC  on October 28th, and a few  other festival appearances , as well.

And not only do they keep adding shows to their schedule, frontman Evan Felker confirmed at their Red Rocks Amphitheater show in May  that they’re working on a new record :

“I heard a rumor that we’ve been working on a record… and that rumor is true. I’m gonna play something new for ya”

Titled  “Cat In The Rain,”  Evan debuted the song at the White Oak Music Hall in Houston, Texas in May, as well.

It just keeps getting better…

blackberry smoke tour 2022 opening act

Blackberry Smoke

With ben chapman.

When Charlie Starr started writing the songs that would become Blackberry Smoke’s new album, Be Right Here , the first tune the vocalist/lead guitarist worked up was “Dig A Hole.” Formed by an old guitar riff married with a Wurlitzer chorus riff written by keyboardist Brandon Still , the swampy psychedelic-rock song is a powerful statement about choosing your path in life—whether you want to give into temptation or walk a more righteous road.

“In life, we all are faced with choices,” Starr says. “Are we going to do good, or are we going to do bad? Are we going to love, or are we going to hate? We have a finite amount of time, each of us on this Earth. So probably want to make the best out of it instead of wasting time.”

“Dig A Hole” is the lead track on Be Right Here and sets the tone for another expansive set of rock ‘n’ roll from Blackberry Smoke. As always, the Georgia-based band—Starr, Still, guitarist/vocalist Paul Jackson, bassist/vocalist Richard Turner and drummer Brit Turner—draw inspiration from Southern rock, blues-leaning classic rock and rootsy vintage country. But on Be Right Here , Blackberry Smoke sound even more self-assured, from the strength of their songwriting to their musical execution.

Over the past two decades, Blackberry Smoke has developed this confidence and amassed a loyal fanbase, leading their last five full-length albums to achieve great chart success, including 2021’s You Hear Georgia , which reached #1 on Billboard ’s Americana/Folk Albums chart.

The band wrote and recorded You Hear Georgia during the most intense periods of the pandemic but held off on releasing it until they could go tour again. Starr says Blackberry Smoke took the same deliberate approach with Be Right Here , which was recorded in late 2022 and early 2023, around the same time drummer Brit Turner was diagnosed with a type of brain tumor known as Glioblastoma. “We didn’t feel a whole lot of pressure to go in and make this one quickly,” Starr shares. Today, Turner continues to receive treatment while remaining an active and steadfast force in the band.

Working once again with Grammy-Award winning producer Dave Cobb, Blackberry Smoke has crafted music that’s raw and immediate-sounding. They tracked the album live in the same space; an approach Cobb also prefers as it lends itself to a looser vibe. “I remember different times I would say, ‘I think we should redo that,’ and he’s like, ‘No, leave it that way. That way it’s magical,” Starr remembers. “It’s just as natural and real as possible.”

Location also factored into Be Right Here ’s sound as they recorded most of the album at Nashville’s beloved RCA Studio A, and then polished it off in Cobb’s studio in Savannah, Georgia. “It’s down in the low country and beautiful,” Starr says of the space, called Georgia Mae. “This album has a swagger to it, a deep in the pocket kind of feel. Those surroundings helped give the record that feel.”

Be Right Here ’s lyrics are particularly literary, full of vivid and relatable characters that ensure the songs often resemble rich short stories. For example, “Whatcha Know Good,” a co-write with Brent Cobb, is a “feel-good song” driven by an amiable narrator who gets along with everybody and dislikes negativity. “There’s plenty of bad news when you turn on the television,” Starr says. “The dude in this song, he doesn’t want to hear it anymore. He wants to go to fishing and talk about good news. We were giggling the whole time because we know that guy. Maybe we are that guy.”

A laid-back, Stones-like guitar lick from former Buckcherry guitarist Keith Nelson inspired “Like It Was Yesterday,” helping Starr conjure another very specific character: an earnest young guy who doesn’t have much life experience, but knows what he likes and is grateful for good times. “I picture him laying on the hood of his car with his girl, staring up at the moon and the stars,” Starr says. “It’s the idea of holding onto that fleeting moment, because it can slip away from you.”

Other Be Right Here highlights include “Azalea” and “Little Bit Crazy,” both co-written with Starr’s frequent songwriting collaborator Travis Meadows. The latter song, which begins with a chorus of soulful gospel singers before blooming into a languid Southern rocker, features a narrator who’s embroiled in a relationship that’s fun, but not necessarily healthy.

Meanwhile, the lovely, elegiac folk ballad “Azalea” is centered on someone who seems emotionally bereft and spiritually lost, but is working hard to find their way home. “It’s a heavy song. It’s not a happy song, per se,” Starr says. However, “Azalea” has a distinct streak of optimism near the end, which Starr says is intentional: “There’s some hope in there, too. It comes with both Travis and I being fathers. Hold on to your kids as tight as you can without smothering them.”

The delicate balance of familial protection also permeates the easygoing “Other Side of the Light,” a co-write with Levi Lowrey. Written from the perspective of a young boy on an obstacle-filled road trip, the tune stresses that he’ll find shelter and safety with his mom. In contrast, the stomping “Hammer and the Nail,” which Starr wrote with Nelson, takes another approach to family ties—in this case, a son who needs to decide if he’s going to give into his wild side and take after his rebellious father. Fittingly, lively acoustic guitar gives way to an explosive chorus with freewheeling bar-blues piano and raucous electric riffs.

Be Right Here ends on a confident note, the organ-driven power ballad, “Barefoot Angel.” Starr says he doesn’t write many love songs, but made an exception here. “It’s either me singing about my wife or some guy singing about his wife that’s in the same situation, which is, I wouldn’t be able to do anything without her. When I’m worried and feeling bad, she makes it better.”

For Blackberry Smoke, embracing the light and finding the silver lining are once again at the heart of what they do best.
