About Bikini Kill: Active from 1990 to 1998, Bikini Kill is a feminist punk band that started in Olympia, WA, and later moved to Washington, DC. Billy Karren joined Kathleen Hanna, Kathi Wilcox and Tobi Vail on guitar after the band had played several shows as a three-piece. Credited with instigating the Riot Grrrl movement in the early ’90s via their political lyrics, zines and confrontational live shows, Bikini Kill encouraged women and girls to start bands as a means of cultural resistance. They used touring as a way to create an underground network between girls who played music, put on shows and made fanzines. This informal network created a forum for multiple female voices to be heard.
Bikini Kill started touring in June 1991, serving up their radical feminist punk rage to crowds across the US several times, as well as making their way through Europe, Australia and Japan. The band recorded and released a demo tape, two EPs, two LPs and three singles which are available via their independent label Bikini Kill Records. The band has just re-issued Pussy Whipped and Reject All American , available now on vinyl & CD for the first time since they went out of print 7 years ago. They also uploaded their entire catalog on streaming services last Fall. Now available for streaming on Spotify , Tidal and Apple Music , the catalog includes landmark releases from 1991’s Revolution Girl Style Now to 1998’s The Singles , which features production, guitar and vocals from Joan Jett .

Amazing, I missed the the first time round, and they didn’t disappoint. Kathleen Hanna and drummer Kathi Wilcox still screamed and yelled like Banshee Riot Grrls, and although the sound was a bit shit, this was down to the Techs not adjusting the sound to the Academy’s echo acoustics. They support group, Big Joanie were also amazing and I highly recommend seeing them live . Fabulous gig - so glad I went

Great show. Brooklyn Steele is a great venue and it was an amazing time. Only complaint was the problem wwe had getting tickets when the show was first announced and ll tickets where bought up by scalpers within the first 2 mins. But I understand that wasn't the bands fault.
Great gig played a lot of songs and had a great repor with the fans full of energy well worth seeing. Coumdnt believe its bee 22 years since these last played together did t feel like it

Arts & entertainment, design & style, travel & leisure, search concrete playground, riot grrrl pioneers bikini kill are returning to australia in 2023 for a run of solo shows and festival gigs.
The trailblazing trio will hit Hobart, Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney on their first tour Down Under in over 25 years.
Girls to the front — Bikini Kill are coming to Australia. The iconic Kathleen Hanna-fronted, Washington-formed band instigated the Riot Grrrl movement, and will perform their first Australian shows in more than 25 years on a seven-date 2023 tour.
On top of already-announced appearances at Mona Foma and Golden Plains , the trailblazing trio have now dropped the dates for a series of headline shows, appearing in Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney throughout March.
The solo shows will kick off at Brisbane's The Tivoli on Friday, March 3, before moving onto Lion Arts Factory in Adelaide on Sunday, March 5. They, they'll hit up The Forum in Melbourne on Wednesday, March 8, and the Sydney Opera House on Monday, March 13. In good news for the next generation of riot grrrls and underage rockers, all four of these headline shows will be all ages.
Plus, Bikini Kill have also been added to the Perth Festival lineup , where they'll perform previously announced headliners Bon Iver and Björk — with the latter bringing her Cornucopia tour to Western Australia for the 2023 festival.
Debi Del Grande
"The quintessential band that blends activism and extreme fun, Bikini Kill, will take their rightful place on the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall stage for one of the most anticipated shows of the year," Sydney Opera House Head of Contemporary Music Ben Marshall said.
"Kathleen Hanna, Kathi Wilcox and Tobi Vail are feminist performance-art punks whose moment never went away and are arguably needed now more than ever. Mesmerising, clever and surreal, this is a rare chance to see this legendary, razor-sharp live band that will blow you away, while revealing the constant struggle that animates them."
Tickets for the Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne gigs will all go on sale at 9am local time on Monday, October 31. As for the Sydney show, tickets will be available for Sydney Opera House Insiders from 9am on Tuesday, November 1, followed by a What's On pre-sale at midday on Wednesday, November 2, and a general sale at 9am on Friday, November 4.
Yes, either watching or rewatching the exceptional documentary The Punk Singer , about Hanna, should be on your must-do list right now. Fun fact: when Hanna spray-painted "Kurt smells like Teen Spirit" across her pal Mr Cobain's wall, the name of a certain grunge anthem was born.
And, if you're in Sydney in any point leading up to the tour, drop into the Powerhouse Museum Ultimo, where Bikini Kill is currently being featured in the exhibition UNPOPULAR . The exhibition dips into the musical archive of entrepreneur Stephen 'Pav' Pavlovic to unveil never-before-seen photographs and footage of legendary and beloved musicians taking to Australian stages. Hanna, Wilcox and Vail appear alongside other decade-defining artists like Beastie Boys, Nirvana, Sonic Youth and Hole.

Bikini Kill announce Australian tour for 2023
- X (formerly Twitter)
Formative riot grrrl punk rock band Bikini Kill will play their first Australian shows in 26 years early in 2023, with a string of dates announced for March.
The remarkably influential group reunited in 2019 and have been making their way around the world, giving generations of fans either their first live experience with their iconic work, or their first in a long time at typically electric sold out shows.
The band, featuring Kathleen Hanna , Kathi Wilcox and Tobi Vail are truly one of the most vital and ground-breaking groups in rock music history and the chance to see them should not be taken lightly. Along with Sara Landeau (The Julie Ruin) they will prove their potency is undiminished in 2023.
Formed amidst the testosterone driven metal, rock and early grunge scenes in 1990, the band were adamant about female empowerment in music, especially in the spaces where women had traditionally felt uncomfortable.
Their 'Girls to the Front' motto was emblematic of their approach to changing the music world and those changes still resonate today, both on and off stage. Rock'n'roll would be worse without Bikini Kill's music and influence.
The band split not long after their last Australian tour in the mid-90s, and since their reformation we've been patiently waiting for their return. It's finally happening, allowing a whole new generation (or two) a chance to see one of history's most important bands.
A couple of final points about these shows:
- Every show is all ages. Shutting people out of their gigs for little things like age isn't really Bikini Kill's style. Most shows have conditions on this though, so please check with the venues/festivals about that.
- Tickets for most shows are on sale from 9am local time on Monday 31 October. Sydney is Friday 4 November. Hobart is already on sale. Please check with your local venue for the proper info.
- Perth fans, please come back here in a few hours before making any angry comments on Facebook. [UPDATE: yep, they're playing Perth Festival too]
Catch Bikini Kill playing the following shows early next year.
Sunday 26 February – MONA FOMA, Hobart (all ages)
Wednesday 1 March – The Rechabite, Perth (all ages)
Friday 3 March – The Tivoli, Brisbane (all ages)
Sunday 5 March – Lion Arts Factory, Adelaide (all ages)
Wednesday 8 March – The Forum, Melbourne (all ages)
Saturday 11 March – Golden Plains, Meredith (all ages)
Monday 13 March – Sydney Opera House, Concert Hall (all ages)

Adele slams homophobic fan during Las Vegas residency: ‘Are you f–king stupid?’

Adele blasted a homophobic fan who shouted, “Pride sucks,” during her Las Vegas residency Saturday night.
The “Someone Like You” songstress briefly paused her show at Caesars Palace’s Colosseum to acknowledge the start of Pride Month when the audience member made the contentious remark.
“Did you come to my f–kin’ show and say, ‘Pride sucks?'” she asked the concertgoer. “Are you f–king stupid? Don’t be so f–king ridiculous.”
“If you’ve got nothing nice to say, shut up, alright?” Adele, 36, continued.
Several fans cheered for the 16-time Grammy winner as she briefly called out the fan while sitting on a piano bench.
Over the years, the “Hello” singer has shown her support for the LGBTQIA+ community. She even dedicated her 2016 show in Belgium to the Pulse nightclub massacre victims in Florida, per TMZ .
Reflecting on the hate crime at the gay nightclub, which left about 50 members dead, she told her audience in Europe, “The LGBTQ community, they’re like my soulmates since I was really young, so I’m very moved by it.”

Aside from standing for what she believes in, Adele hasn’t shied away from calling out concertgoers for their aggressive antics.
In July 2023, the British pop star issued a warning to fans who thought about throwing something on stage at her while she was performing.
Referencing top artists who’ve had been struck with cell phones and other miscellaneous items, she said, “Have you noticed how people are forgetting f–king show etiquette at the moment and just throwing s–t onstage?”
She continued, “Have you seen that? I f–king dare you, I dare you to throw something at me. I’ll f–king kill you.”
The hitmaker might be wrapping up her “Weekends With Adele” residency sometime soon as she seeks to expand her family with her partner, Rich Paul .
“Once I am done with all my obligations and all of my shows, I want to have a baby,” Adele told fans in May. “I want a girl because I’ve already got a boy.”
The “Easy On Me” singer shares 11-year-old son Angelo with ex-husband Simon Konecki .
