BOOP! The Betty Boop Musical is based on the characters created by Max Fleischer.

First introduced in 1930, Betty Boop was created by Max Fleischer for his “Talkartoons” series, the world’s first animated “talkies” which Max’s company, Fleischer Studios, produced for Paramount Studios. Betty initially appeared as a dog-like stage performer who sang and danced with another dog-like character named Bimbo, joyfully entertaining vast audiences of other Fleischer characters from the animal kingdom.

Inspired by the collective energy, style, and sound of the many popular Jazz Age flappers and entertainers of the 1920s, Betty quickly evolved into a full-fledged human character, and by 1932 she had become the only female animated screen star in the world. Voiced by Mae Questel , Betty starred in more than 100 cartoons, 90 of which are included in the official Betty Boop series, which ended in 1939. Since then, Betty has appeared in dozens of hit movies, television specials, commercials, and was the first cartoon character to be profiled by A&E’s Biography series.

Today, Fleischer Studios and their great team of creative professionals, have parlayed the iconic Betty Boop into a worldwide licensing phenomenon entertaining millions of fans and collectors alike. Please visit them online at  www.fleischerstudios.com  and  www.bettyboop.com .

Gorgeous ‘Boop!’ builds a colorful, tuneful, graceful world for cartoon heroine

While plot and supporting characters need more attention, broadway-bound musical has spectacular songs and a winning star in jasmine amy rogers..

Jasmine Amy Rogers radiates star wattage in the title role of “Boop! The Betty Boop Musical.”

Jasmine Amy Rogers radiates star wattage in the title role of “Boop! The Betty Boop Musical.”

Matthew Murphy and Evan Zimmerman

Here’s what doesn’t need to change about “Boop!,” the new musical getting its pre-Broadway tryout at Chicago’s CIBC Theatre this month:

  • A single step of director/choreographer Jerry Mitchell’s spectacular footwork.
  • A single note in David Foster’s score.
  • The gorgeous gray-scale cartoon world that shimmers like silk as it unspools on stage with lush, cinematic detail.

Under Mitchell’s occasionally frenetic direction, “Boop!” offers a lovingly detailed homage to cartoonist Max Fleischer’s iconic pin-curled, squeaky-voiced creation Betty Boop, as well as one spectacular number after another.

Think the Nicholas Brothers meet the Ziegfeld Follies meet the Rockettes and you get an idea of extraordinary athleticism, precision, grace and sheer show-stoppery Mitchell puts on stage.

But while “Boop!” looks and sounds terrific, the plot purportedly driving the show is an overstuffed mess that defies logic, even for a story about a cartoon. It also treats its supporting characters like afterthoughts, which makes the subplots forgettable at best, laborious more often.

“Boop!” boasts not one but two love stories, one wholly unnecessary. There is also a smarmy politician and an imperiled universe that only Betty can save. As scenes veer between Betty’s home in the black-and-white world of cartoons and the technicolor “real world,” Bob Martin’s book winds itself in knots creating and easily solving every last issue with predictable facility.

  • Who was Betty Boop? New stage musical in Chicago tells a tale of the timeless cartoon creation

A quick word about the show’s heroine: Betty Boop made her debut in 1930, Fleischer’s voluptuous pen-and-ink creation becoming the star of many black-and-white movie “shorts.” Betty’s unapologetic mix of blatant sex appeal, smarts and unconventional adventures — she even ran for president in one of her cartoons — made her a star. More than 90 years after Betty Boop’s screen premiere, she’s almost a cult figure, her likeness found in everything from earpods to talking dolls.

“Boop!,” which was created “in association with Fleischer Studios and based on characters Fleischer created,” has an absolute triple-threat star with Jasmine Amy Rogers in the title role.

The story kicks off as Betty leaves her cartoon world, determined to find out who she really is, minus the outward trappings of fame and endless adventures that come with being a cartoon movie star. To travel from her cartoon world home to the real world, Betty borrows a contraption her Grampy (Stephen DeRosa) invented. Like the DeLorean in “Back to the Future,” it serves as a portal between universes.

“Boop!” replicates the black-and-white cartoon world where Betty (Jasmine Amy Rogers) and her Grampy (Stephen DeRosa) first exist.

“Boop!” replicates the black-and-white cartoon world where Betty (Jasmine Amy Rogers) and her Grampy (Stephen DeRosa) first exist.

Conveniently, the machine (with a massive amount of dazzle and stage smoke) sends Betty to Comicon, a convention of cosplaying animation aficionados. Betty fits right in, and quickly befriends Trisha (Angelica Hale), a Betty Boop superfan who ends up taking Betty home with her. Trisha’s jazz-loving brother Dwayne (Ainsley Anthony Melham) is instantly smitten.

Meanwhile, there’s trouble back in the cartoon world. Without Betty, the entire place and all its cartoon inhabitants will cease to exist. Trouble in the real world ensues when Betty is conned into helping a slimeball politician win a crucial election.

In addition to being convoluted, the plot completely wastes Tony winner Faith Prince, who plays Valentina, a real-world character with enough ribald energy to power an entire burlesque house. Valentina is trapped in a stagnant love story with the cartoon world’s Grampy; Mitchell has both Prince and DeRosa camping it up to 12. Both performers become shrill and strident in a hurry, rendering their potential love story into an overblown series of hardy-har-hars that might momentarily amuse a bored elementary schooler, but few others.

Thankfully, this is Betty Boop’s show, and Rogers’ Betty radiates star wattage even when she’s visible only from the neck up, as she is for the first few refrains of “A Little Versatility,” when her body is rendered in cartoon drawings. Even as little more than a singing head, she steals the stage. When the drawings fall away and Rogers sparkles with full animation, it’s a breathtaking moment.

  • Veteran Broadway team crafts ‘Boop! The Musical’ as a love story for a new age

Foster’s score is filled with riches. Rogers delivers a massive act-one closer with the incandescent, ferociously energetic “Where I Want to Be,” a song that captures that optimistic ebullience that comes from knowing your powers are at full strength and that you’re in precisely the right place at precisely the right time. When she unfurls the 11 o’clock “I Want” song “Something to Shout About,” the melody soars and swells with amplitude enough to fill an amphitheater.

There’s also a tricky duet between Betty and sleazy, skirt-chasing villain Raymond Demarest (a comically suave Erich Bergen). “Take it to the Next Level” has Bergen as a Sinatra-slick crooner as he chases Betty around his desk. When she outwits him with the help of a handy desk lamp, it’s a wonderful moment.

As Betty’s shy love interest, Melham’s Dwayne moves with the floaty, balletic grace of a latter-day Astaire. He’s pure Old Hollywood charm, with a knack for modern-day relatability.

Ainsley Anthony Melham moves with Astaire-like flair as Dwayne, love interest for Betty (Jasmine Amy Rogers) in “Boop!”

Ainsley Anthony Melham moves with Astaire-like flair as Dwayne, love interest for Betty (Jasmine Amy Rogers) in “Boop!”

One of the production’s most humorous and self-aware moments arrives as Dwayne is singing his face off in a soaring love song, only to reach an anguished final verse that has him bemoaning the weirdness of falling in love with a drawing.

David Rockwell’s set design and Finn Ross’s projections work wonders on stage. The visuals are stars in their own right, moving the action from black-and-white cartoons to a full-color world with a fluidity that speaks to the artistry and technical prowess of the designers.

Wresting a viable musical from a two-dimensional character whose work peaked in the 1930s is a mighty challenge. Mitchell is part of the way there. “Boop!” looks and sounds great. If its creators can come up with a plot that’s more focused and supporting characters with more depth than, well, cartoons, they just might have a hit.

First introduced in 1930, Betty Boop was created by  Max Fleischer  for his “Talkartoons” series, the world’s first animated “talkies” which Max’s company,  Fleischer Studios , produced for  Paramount Studios . Betty Boop initially appeared as adog-likestage performer who sang and danced with another dog-like character named Bimbo, joyfully entertaining vast audiences of other Fleischer characters from the animal kingdom.

Inspired by the collective energy, style, and sound of the many popular Jazz Age flappers and entertainers of the 1920s, Betty Boop quickly evolved into a full-fledged human character, and by 1932 she had become the only female animated screen star in the world. Voiced by Mae Questel, Betty Boop starred in more than 100 cartoons, 90 of which are included in the official  Betty Boop  series, which ended in 1939. Since then, Betty Boop has appeared in dozens of hit movies, television specials, commercials, and was the first cartoon character to be profiled by A&E’s  Biography  series.

Who was Betty Boop? A new stage musical in Chicago tells a tale of the timeless cartoon creation.

One was the creator of a squeaky-clean mouse named Mickey, the other the brains behind a squeaky-voiced flirt with the catchphrase “Boop-oop-a-doop.”

But the two great American animators — Walt Disney and Max Fleischer — didn’t meet for the first time until 1956, more than a quarter of a century after the introduction of each of their hugely famous creations.

Fleischer stood 5-feet-5-inches tall and had a paunch. Disney was almost 6-feet, slender and had a full head of dark, slicked-back hair.

“Walt was a charming, flattering host,” Fleischer’s son Richard Fleischer wrote in “Out of the Inkwell,” a 2005 biography of his father. “My father seemed to be enjoying himself, but in Walt’s presence, he seemed diminished, and my heart broke for him. I had the feeling that Goliath had defeated David.”

Defeated? Click on eBay, and you’ll find 140,000-plus Betty Boop-themed items for sale — everything from a $600 silver spoon to figurines, T-shirts and even a “hooded tank shirt 4 unisex bearded dragons” listed for $24.99. There are countless Boop-related Facebook pages, including one that boasts it has 1.4 million followers.

Maison Monroe, 21, a Columbia College Chicago student and Betty Boop superfan, shows off a vintage Betty Boop apron she says she wears while cleaning her Wicker Park apartment. As a child, Monroe says watched Boop cartoons on her grandmother’s VCR.

And now comes “Boop! The Musical,” which is in its world-premiere, pre-Broadway run at Chicago’s CIBC Theatre, 18 W. Monroe St.

In case you’re wondering, Boop’s signature spit curls are not framing a giant prosthetic head.

Jasmine Amy Rogers — whose credits include playing Gretchen Wieners in the national touring production of “Mean Girls,” Melody Green in “The Wanderer” at Paper Mill Playhouse and a TV appearance on the Paramount+ series “Evil” — stars as the pop culture icon.

What accounts for the tiny-waisted, sexually provocative cartoon character’s enduring appeal 90-some years after she first sashayed across American movie screens?

Ask Maison Monroe, a 21-year-old Columbia College student whose Goth look is part-Elvira, part-Boop.

“She is this very cool character,” says Monroe, who grew up watching Boop cartoons on her grandmother’s VHS player. “In the 1930s, she was this sexually promiscuous character. Women were not really seen like that. It was kind of badass and rebel of her.”

Bob Martin, the musical’s writer, says part of what intrigued him about Betty Boop is that most people living today haven’t seen the crackly cartoon shorts. They know Boop perhaps only as an image on a T-shirt or keychain.

Mark Fleischer, the animator’s grandson, calls that the “miracle of Betty Boop.”

Interest in Boop merchandise took off in the 1970s, a time you could only watch the cartoons as reruns on TV. That interest has grown “vastly, exponentially,” he says.

So have her many incarnations. Boop has appeared as a cowboy, a zombie, part of the zodiac.

She was ahead of her time, and she’s hard to pigeonhole. She was portrayed as lion tamer, a pilot and a successful presidential candidate, says Mark Fleischer, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Fleischer Studios Inc., which licenses Boop and other Max Fleischer creations.

“We’ve seen a lot of people who ask to have her image put with their loved ones in their final resting places,” he says.

“Part of what really interested me is that Betty herself has become a kind of representative for strong, sexy, smart women,” Martin says. “In our story, she comes from her cartoon world into the real world and is very surprised to learn that she is an icon and that people have applied meaning to who she is. It kind of freaks her out a bit.”

Max Fleischer, the son of Polish Jews settling in New York at the turn of the 20th century, loved to draw from a young age. His artwork had a grittier, more urban feel than Disney’s — probably because he lived in Brooklyn and then Manhattan.

He had an inventor’s mind, developing a machine he called the “Rotoscope,” which allowed him to hand-trace, frame by frame, motion-picture footage to be used in animation — making it less crude and stuttery than was common when Fleischer was getting started.

Betty Boop started out as a half-dog, half-female creation, appearing for the first time in the 1930 short “Dizzy Dishes.”

She soon morphed into the flirty girl next door, debuting with the name Betty Boop in 1931’s “Minding the Baby.” She was an instant hit for Paramount Pictures, according to Richard Fleischer, who died in 2006.

Jasmine Amy Rogers in Betty Boop costume

This image released by Boneau/Bryan-Brown shows Jasmine Amy Rogers, who will star in ‘BOOP! The Musical.’ The production makes its debut this fall in Chicago with hopes that it can charm itself to Broadway.

Mark Seliger/Boneau/Bryan-Brown

“Several squeaky female voices were tried out in the early Betty Boops, but none seemed exactly right,” he wrote in his book. “The voice needed to be squeaky, but it also needed to be cute and sexy, to sing, to do good line readings and to be able to say and sing ‘Boop-oop-a-doop’ in exactly the right way.”

Max Fleischer settled on the American actress Mae Questel, who was Boop’s voice for all 118 animated shorts.

But just who provided the inspiration for the voice is up for debate.

Helen Kane, a popular singer in the 1930s, said Max Fleischer stole her singing style to create Boop, and she sued for $250,000 in a case that made front-page news in New York. A judge ruled against Kane after it came to light that the Black, Chicago-born singer and dancer Esther Lee Jones was singing in that style long before Kane.

Betty Boop “was born of that age,” according to Mark Fleischer. “She embodies the collective creativity and energy and the many artists” of the day.

In the beginning, Boop’s skirt was so short you could see her garter. A few years later, her hemline dropped drastically in response to self-imposed movie industry guidelines.

“Betty had to change her style,” says Peter Benjaminson, author of the recently released “The Life and Times of Betty Boop: The 100-Year History of an Animated Icon.” “She became a housewife — pretty, but she had a few more pounds. She had a dog. She cleaned the house.”

Even with the makeover, Boop never lost that odd blend of infant and fully developed woman.

Grace Kessler Overbeke, an assistant theater professor at Columbia College Chicago, says that explains part of Boop’s appeal.

“Setting aside the more sinister implications of sexualizing women through infantilization, women may see a seductive quality in the fantasy of being able to reconcile your adult body with your childhood,” Overbeke says. “The idea that you can be both a girl and a woman at once? That is fantastic.”

The old Boop cartoons were seven or eight minutes long. Will today’s audiences sit in a theater for two-plus hours to see the musical?

Ivan Brunetti — who teaches courses on illustration, cartooning and graphic novels at Columbia — doesn’t see why not. After all, Boop cartoons were essentially 10-minute-long musicals, he says.

“They made a two-hour Barbie movie,” Brunetti says. “So, if you can spin it out of a Barbie doll, you can certainly spin two hours out of Betty Boop.”

Betty a sort of musical.

Sat 3 Dec 2022 – Sat 14 Jan 2023

Betty is a heart-warming celebration of the human spirit and the unexpected rewards that can come from thinking outside of the dispatch box.

“Here’s to a woman who conquered the murky world of Westminister with nothing but wit and gumption…and enough hairspray to turn a tsunami into a kiss curl.”

As the first female speaker of the House of Commons, Betty Boothroyd is a Dewsbury girl to celebrate, and the five ladies (plus Calvin) of The Dewsbury Players are going to do just that… through the medium of musical theatre! Their high-kicks may be wobbly, their acting ‘enthusiastic’ and the props left over from a production of MISS SAIGON; but, tonight, the Village Hall is their theatre of dreams! Emboldened by their heroine’s indefatigable tenacity, this amateur group prove themselves to be extraordinary women on and off stage.

Maxine Peake (Funny Cow & Anne) and Seiriol Davies (How To Win Against History) have created this brand-new production, directed by former Royal Exchange Theatre Artistic Director Sarah Frankcom.

On June 2-3, Time Magazine’s 2023 Person Of The Year will play back-to-back ‘Eras Tour’ concerts at Lyon’s Groupama Stadium with special guest Paramore.

These gigs come on the heels of Swift’s four nights at Paris’ La Defense Arena in early May.

The biggest difference between those shows and the upcoming pair in Lyon is the price.

While tickets started at $246 USD before fees for the Paris concerts, they’re much, much cheaper should you go to Groupama Stadium .

Case in point, there are tickets going for as low as $69 USD before fees on Vivid Seats for the Monday, June 3 show at the time of publication.

Not bad at all considering tix to see Tay Tay in the U.S. typically cost over $1,000 last year.

Taylor Swift ‘Eras Tour’ news

Our team has been following the ‘Eras Tour’ closely over the past year.

Over the past few months, we spoke to a Swiftie who  shared some helpful tips  about seeing Taylor live, reported on  dropping ticket prices  and  came up with a list of all the most exciting fan trends .

Taylor Swift new music

Swift’s  “The Tortured Poets Department”  was released at midnight (and subsequently at 2 a.m.) on Friday, April 19.

While every listener will likely come away with their own favorites, we particularly enjoyed the sleek, synthy “Fortnight,” icy “So Long, London,” anthemic “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart,” a bombastic slow build of “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived” and gorgeously arranged “Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus.”

If you want to give it a spin — if you haven’t already, that is — you can find “The Tortured Poets Department”  here .

The Hayley Williams-fronted pop-punk rockers are opening for Swift from May through August this year. This may come as a bit of a surprise to some fans considering that the group mounted a successful arena tour of their own in 2023.

That tour, came on the heels of Paramore’s 2022 reunion; prior to that, the band had been on a five-year hiatus.

For fans who want to check out their latest, their 2023 album “This Is Why” can be heard  here .

Huge stars on tour in 2024

Although it will cost an arm and a leg (sometimes more!) to see Swift live this year, there are much more affordable — likely stateside — concerts you can attend this year.

Here are just five of our favorite artists you won’t want to miss live.

•  Olivia Rodrigo

•  Kacey Musgraves

•  Pink

•  Chappell Roan

•  Billie Eilish

Who else is on the road this year? Check out our list of the  50 biggest concert tours in 2024  to find out.

I Look Look in People’s Windows».

En «We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together», «I Knew You Were Trouble» y la versión de diez minutos de «All Too Well», los «swifties» no bajaron la intensidad, gritando con fervor «Fuck the patriarchy» («que le den al patriarcado» en inglés).
