From New York’s Penn Station , you can take any Long Island Rail Road service to Jamaica Station in Queens which depart every eight minutes. Some examples are the Babylon Branch and Hempstead Branch Services. 

Then, take another Long Island Rail Road Service heading to Montauk but hop off the train after a one hour and 40-minute journey at Westhampton Station . These trains leave around every two hours but there is one direct train from Penn Station to Westhampton Station every day.

Altogether, the journey should take no longer than two hours and 20 minutes and tend to cost no more than $30.50 for a single journey, often much less.

Train travel in the U.S. isn’t exactly as easy as in, say, Europe or Japan, but luckily for New York City residents and visitors, the Big Apple is one of the country's major rail hubs. It’s a snap to get to and from destinations near and far on Amtrak, which offers over a dozen train routes from the city, spanning north to Montreal and south to Miami. Meanwhile, regional services like the Metro-North Railroad and Long Island Rail Road run to places closer to NYC like Connecticut, the Hudson Valley, and Long Island.

If you need a little inspiration on where you should go, here are some of the best train trips from NYC that are worthy of taking the scenic route. 

NYC to Chicago

Train route: Amtrak's Lake Shore Limited Duration: 19 hours

Amtrak’s Lake Shore Limited offers daily departures to whisk New Yorkers away to the Windy City. The route takes passengers through some gorgeous upstate New York areas, such as the Hudson Valley and Finger Lakes region, then hugs the shore of Lake Michigan before entering Chicago. According to Amtrak, the best seats in the house are the Viewliner accommodations, including the Viewliner Bedroom Suite , which comes with a foldout bed, ideal for the overnight journey. Once in your destination, set out on an architectural walking tour, explore the best attractions in Chicago like the Art Institute of Chicago and "The Bean" in Millennium Park, and stay at the luxe Pendry Chicago .

NYC to Westerly, Rhode Island

Train route: Amtrak's Northeast Regional Duration: 3 hours

For a quicker getaway, board Amtrak’s Northeast Regional to Westerly, Rhode Island, a quiet little beach town ideal for a refreshing weekend. Though short, the train ride takes you past some idyllic landscapes in Connecticut, over bridges, and past glittering water views and pastoral fields. This train trip from NYC takes you through more bucolic landscapes and a sprinkling of city vistas as you pass through Providence. If you want to arrive at your destination sooner, opt for Acela, though you might miss some of the scenery as the train whizzes by at higher speeds with fewer stops. Once in Beantown, fill your itinerary with some of Boston's must-do activities , including walking The Freedom Trail, visiting the Paul Revere House , and enjoying a bit of culture at the Institute of Contemporary Art  and Museum of Fine Arts . NYC to Philadelphia

Train route: Amtrak's Northeast Regional Duration: 1 hour, 20 minutes

If the allure of an ooey, gooey, downright delicious cheesesteak is calling your name, then it's time to take the train south to Philadelphia. Though the views during this short ride won't be the best, it's worth it for where the train stops: William H. Gray III 30th Street Station . First opened in 1933, the station is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Original features include 95-foot ceilings and art deco touches. The station is also home to The Porch , an outdoor area connecting the station to Market Street, and a stone's throw from major attractions like The Academy of Natural Sciences and Independence Hall . As for that cheesesteak, it's up for debate on who serves the best, but Dalessandro's , Angelo's Pizzeria , and Jim's South St. are a few local favorites. After you dine, retire to Wm. Mulherin's Sons Hotel , a chic and centrally located boutique property with a timeless design, including exposed brick and beams.

NYC to Wilmington, Delaware

Train route: Amtrak's Northeast Regional Duration: 2 hours

Travel just a smidge past Philadelphia, and you’ll hit Wilmington, a history buff’s dream. The journey will take you past verdant landscapes before entering this city of around 72,000 people. Disembark at ​​Joseph R. Biden Jr. Railroad Station, named after the president thanks to his famed trips back and forth to Washington, D.C., on this very railway. Make your way to places like the Delaware Art Museum , Fort Christina , and Nemours Estate , a stunning 200-acre garden and 77-room mansion that will make you feel like you’re back in the Gilded Age. After seeing the local attractions, check into the Hotel Du Pont , a 12-story Italian Renaissance Revival building that opened in 1913 smack dab in the middle of downtown. 

NYC to Washington, D.C.

Train route: Amtrak's Northeast Regional or Acela Duration: 3 hours, 40 minutes on Regional or 3 hours on Acela

Ride the Northeast Regional a few stops further to the nation’s capital, a journey that takes you through more cityscapes (including Philadelphia and Baltimore), with a smattering of green spaces in between. You can opt for the faster Acela if you're in a rush. Spend a weekend in D.C. exploring the wealth of historical sites and museums, including the National Mall and the National Museum of African American History and Culture . See a hit show at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts , or plan in advance to tour the White House . NYC to New York's Adirondacks

Train route: Amtrak's Adirondacks line Duration: 3.5 hours

Stamford, Connecticut is less than an hour away from New York City, making it an easy Amtrak day trip. There are a variety of things to do, including visiting The Beer Garden at Shippen Landing, the Stamford Museum and Nature Center (which has hiking trails, a mansion and farmhouse), Cove Island Park and the Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens . If you like art, be sure to also check out the city’s many street murals .

Poughkeepsie

Travel 1.5 hours along the Hudson River to Poughkeepsie for beautiful water scenery. After you arrive, enjoy more river views on the Walkaway Over the Hudson (pictured above). There’s also a main street with a variety of restaurants, so you can grab a bite to eat before getting back on the train. Restaurants closest to the Amtrak station include Mahoney’s Irish Pub and River Station .

Philadelphia

Visit museums , see historical sights and eat a cheesesteak on an Amtrak day trip to Philadelphia . Travel time is about 1.5 hours from New York City, and you’ll arrive at the 30th Street Station . You can rent a bike outside the building, or use rideshare to reach the Liberty Bell , Independence Hall , Reading Terminal Market and the Philadelphia Museum of Art . There are also many great sightseeing tours to choose from, or take a bike ride along the Schuylkill River to view the natural scenery.

Home to Yale University, New Haven is about 1 hour and 45 minutes away from New York City on Amtrak. There are many wonderful museums and art galleries to visit on campus, or check out one of the many university events open to the public . If you’re more of a nature person, don’t miss the views and hiking at East Rock Park , which overlooks the city and Long Island Sound. New Haven also has many festivals that you can plan a trip around. Be sure to try the local “ apizza ” on your trip.

A two-hour train ride from New York City, Hudson, New York is on the river of the same name. There are many unique shops, cafes and restaurants in walking distance of the Amtrak station, including Wm. Farmer and Sons (farm to table), Ca’Mea (Italian), Red Dot (American) and Le Perche (French). Other things to do include enjoying the river views from the Henry Hudson Riverfront Park and taking the local ferry across the river. Note that it can be difficult to find rideshare cars, so plan on walking to see the sights.

Wilmington, Delaware is a peaceful getaway with art, gardens and mansions to explore. Amtrak travel time is about two hours, and you’ll arrive next to the Wilmington Riverwalk . Take a stroll along the waterfront or use rideshare to reach the beautiful Nemours Estate (pictured above), the Delaware Art Museum and the Winterthur Museum and Garden . You can also visit the Hagley Museum , the site where the Du Pont family started their gunpowder business.

For a fun waterfront scene complete with historic ships, plan a day trip to Baltimore . After 2.5 hours on the train, request a Lyft or Uber to reach the Inner Harbor or attraction of your choice, including the National Aquarium , Fort McHenry and the B&O Railroad Museum . There are also several different boat tours for experiencing the city from the water. When you’re ready to eat, check out the great seafood restaurants for local crab and other dishes.

New York’s capital, Albany is full of history, craft beverages and urban parks. Top attractions include the1899 New York State Capitol building, New York State Museum , Albany Institute of History and Art and USS Slater . In warmer months, you can also cruise on the Hudson River , walk around the beautiful Washington Park and explore the Corning Preserve (pictured above). Plan to get an Uber or Lyft car to reach downtown Albany after arriving at the Amtrak station — travel time from New York City is about 2.5 hours.

This Connecticut port town was first settled in 1646, was the base of American naval operations during the Revolutionary War, and officially became a city in 1784. There are 13 historic districts on the National Register of Historic Places to explore, or head to Ocean Beach Park for sandy beaches, a swimming pool, amusement rides, arcade and more. Consider planning your trip around Sailfest , a fun summer event, and taking a ride on the Cross Sound Ferry to view lighthouses and coastal mansions.

Mystic, Connecticut is a charming seaport city that’s 2 hours and 45 minutes away from Manhattan via train. The Mystic Seaport Museum and the last surviving wooden whaling ship are top attractions, and the recreated 18th Century village is a fun place to visit. Check out the festivals and events that take place in Mystic throughout the year for more things to see and do. Note that you’ll need to use Lyft or Uber to get around after you arrive.

An adventure for kids and adults, Lancaster, Pennsylvania  is almost three hours away from New York City on Amtrak. You can have a fun-filled day at  Dutch Wonderland amusement park or explore historical sites including President James Buchanan’s home , Amish Village and the Amish Farm and House . The historic Central Market is also a fantastic place to buy local food (consider bringing a cooler or cooler bag with you on the train). To get around, rideshare is your best option.

The hop-on-hop-off trolley tour is an easy way to visit major attractions or get on the red subway line at Union Station to visit the sights (use Google Maps with the transit icon to get directions). Consider a trip on Memorial Day to visit the many veteran memorials and museums or in March to see the cherry blossoms .

Get an early start to enjoy a day trip to Boston . Amtrak travel time is about four hours (for faster travel, book tickets on the Acela). You can walk to major tourist attractions from South Station, including the Boston Tea Party Ships , Boston Public Garden , Faneuil Hall Marketplace and the Freedom Trail . You’ll have a few hours to explore, so plan accordingly. Consider a sightseeing tour to view the city in a short amount of time.

Day Trip from New York to Washington D.C.

The American capital Washington D.C. is a good four hours’ drive from New York City. This guided bus tour starts at the Gray Line Visitors Center in Manhattan and the bus will take you south through the states of New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland until you reach Capitol Hill. With so many things to learn and see this is one of the most interesting day trips you can take from NYC.

Another worthwhile place to visit that’s close to NYC is Philadelphia. At just an hour and a half by train, it’s close enough that many Philadelphians commute to New York City for work daily. Though they are close, these two cities couldn’t have different ambiances; where New York is mainly made from concrete and is a large city, Philly has more green spaces and gives more of a small-town vibe.  

The main draw to this city is its importance in American history, which is evident in many areas of the city – especially the Old City district, which is a small section of the downtown area. Yet, Philadelphia is also home to more than historical landmarks, as you’ll also find exceptional art museums, Chinatown, a primarily Italian neighborhood in South Philly, and lots of gray skyscrapers mixed with industrial warehouses in the downtown section.

Albany is New York’s capital city and is not just the oldest city in the state, but it’s one of the oldest in the nation. English immigrants took control of Albany, NY, in 1664 and named it after the Duke of Albany. By the early 1800s, the city was the 10th largest in the country, which is a title that San Jose, CA, took. The area’s growth was fueled by the creation of the Erie Canal and the railroad, and it continued to serve as a vital transportation hub until the early 1900s.

Hence, as you can see, this area has an extensive history, and there are many local attractions that help provide excellent learning experiences for newbies. Today, this capital city and college town is home to about 100,000 people and has something for everyone.

Day Trip from NYC to Rockaway Beach

Located just over 20 miles from Manhattan, you’ll find Rockaway Beach tucked away in Queens. Though it’s known as Rockaway Beach, this destination encompasses several beaches between 3rd Street and 153rd Street. It is renowned for being the best beach destination close to New York City, so it merits the hour-long subway ride from downtown Manhattan.

If you visit this area in the high season from the end of May through Labor Day, then you can expect to find many surfers, swimmers, and sunbathers enjoying the water and sun. While it’s most popular in the summer, Rockaway Beach makes for a refreshing place to visit any time of the year.

Baltimore is the capital of the US state of Maryland with a long and important history. It is somewhat comparable to Boston and yet it has its own charm.

During my roadtrip along the east coast of the USA, Baltimore landed on my itinerary for the first time. Due to its location by the ocean, it has its very own charm and is especially interesting for those who already know Boston and Washington. From New York you can reach Baltimore in about 3 to 4 hours. In terms of time, it makes no difference whether you travel by rental car or train.

Day Trip from NYC to Mohonk Preserve

Located in the town of New Paltz, New York, you’ll find a private 8,000-acre nature preserve that’s highly popular among tourists and residents alike. The Mohonk Preserve is located on the slopes of the Shawangunk Mountains, which are part of the Appalachians. At just over 90-miles from New York City, Mohonk Preserve is close and well worth the visit.

Here you’ll find a diverse environment of cliffs, ponds, streams, and old forests. The Mohonk Preserve is home to over 70 miles of carriage road and nearly 40 miles of trailers for skiing, horseback riding, hiking, and biking.

If you’re looking to venture a bit further from NYC, then you should consider going to Martha’s Vineyard for the day. Martha’s Vineyard is an island that rests seven miles off of Cape Cod, Massachusetts’ southern coast. At a little over five hours, getting there is half the adventure.

The island is just 100 square miles and is a famous summer colony, but it also has a year-round population of around 17,000 residents. The island consists of six towns: Edgartown, Aquinnah, Tisbury, West Tisbury, Oak Bluffs, and Chilmark.

During my roadtrip along the east coast of the USA, Baltimore landed on my itinerary for the first time. Due to its location by the ocean, it has its very own charm and is especially interesting for those who already know Boston and Washington. From New York you can reach Baltimore in about 3 hours. In terms of time, it makes no difference whether you travel by rental car or train.

Albany is New York’s capital city and is not just the oldest city in the state, but it’s one of the oldest in the nation. English immigrants took control of Albany, NY, in 1664 and named it after the Duke of Albany. By the early 1800s, the city was the 10th largest in the country, which is a title that San Jose, CA, took. The area’s growth was fueled by the creation of the Erie Canal and the railroad, and it continued to serve as a vital transportation hub until the early 1900s. 

Hence, as you can see, this area has an extensive history, and there are many local attractions that help provide excellent learning experiences for newbies. Today, this capital city and college town is home to about 100,000 people and has something for everyone.

New Haven is a quaint community located in Connecticut in the Long Island Sound and is the perfect destination for anyone looking to get away from NYC for a day. In fact, New Haven is only about two hours from Manhattan, so the trip is relatively easy and painless. And the best part is that this area has a lot to offer! From imaginative art and delicious cuisine to sandy beaches, there’s something for everyone. 

You’ll appreciate that New Haven offers a much calmer feeling than that of the hustle and bustle found in New York City. 

Phoenicia, New York, is a hidden gem located in the beautiful Hudson Valley. This Catskills town is an off-the-beaten-path and home to a collection of natural attractions and acclaimed dining establishments. Located just two and a half hours from New York City, this area has more than enough corners to explore during a day trip. 

Between the close proximity to Manhattan and gorgeous scenery, this is a popular area in the summer months. Yet, Phoenicia is a wonderful place to visit any time of the year, as there are always activities such as shopping, dining, and exploring the high peaks of the Catskill Mountains. 

Poughkeepsie

Poughkeepsie is known by many as the “Queen City of the Hudson,” as it is located on the banks of the Hudson River in the scenic Hudson Valley. This area was established during the 17th century by Dutch settlers, but today it’s a bustling college town that’s also popular with tourists.

Best NYC Day Trips by Metro-North Railroad

Have you ever looked at a picture of someone blissfully striding down a mountainous path as a glimmering river beckons in the distance and thought, “that must be nice, but I’m in New York City and don’t have a car – how the heck am I supposed to get to wherever that is?”

You’ve come to the right place! This guide will tell you everything you need to know about the best and easiest NYC day trips without a car. Yes, you read that correctly. There is an entire world beyond New York’s five boroughs, and much of the surrounding Hudson Valley attractions and countryside are extremely accessible thanks to the city’s Metro-North train lines. 

What is Metro-North Railroad?

The Metro-North Railroad is the suburban commuter train service for the greater New York City region. It reaches west into New Jersey, north into New York’s Hudson Valley, and northeast along the southern border of Connecticut, making the Metro-North one of the easiest ways to take an NYC day trip without a car. There are five different lines  that reach a total of 124 stations – the Port Jervis and Passaic Valley lines begin at Penn Station, and the Hudson, Harlem, and New Haven lines start at Grand Central Station.

Prices for a ride on a Metro-North train depend on three things – when and where you’re going, and where you buy your tickets. Rides are priced according to length of trip and peak vs. off-peak times, and it’s helpful to remember that Metro-North peak hours are between 6am and 10am for trains arriving in NYC and between 4pm and 8pm for trains departing NYC. Tickets are also more expensive if you buy them onboard, so to avoid overpaying, either purchase your ticket from a kiosk in the train station or through the eTix app .

Keep in mind that this pricing structure is different from the city’s subway system, despite both entities existing under the MTA. And no, your subway card won’t work on a Metro-North train.

With so many destinations accessible via a Metro-North Railroad train, it can be hard to figure out the best place for NYC day trips or weekend getaway without a car. Read on for our suggestions!

Rockefeller State Park Preserve

Metro-North stop: Tarrytown

Trip length: 45 minutes from Grand Central Station on the Hudson Line

Only 30 miles north of the city, Rockefeller State Park Preserve is home to forested hills, sunlit valleys, and quiet countryside walks, and is one of the best quick NYC day trips by train. It’s also a major birdwatching destination – 202 species of birds have been spotted amongst the preserve’s wooded trails, designating the park an Important Bird Area by the National Audubon Society. From migrating buffleheads to 34 different species of warblers and even the occasional bald eagle, anyone from beginner birdwatchers to seasoned ornithologists will find something to point their binoculars towards. The Preserve also has a partnership with Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture , a collective of conservation planners, organic farmers, educators, and chefs who are creating a sustainable food ecosystem that connects the local community to delicious and innovative cuisine. The Center is open to the public for behind-the-scenes tours of their Innovation Labs, grounds, and growing spaces, and is one of the top Hudson Valley getaways. Harriman State Park

Metro-North stop: Tuxedo

Trip length: 1 hour from Penn Station, transfer at Secaucus Junction to the Port Jervis Line

Harriman State Park , located west of the Hudson River, is BIG. With 44,000 acres and over 200 miles of hiking trails, it’s the second-largest state park in New York. And at just one hour from the city, Metro North makes it a super easy day trip from NYC without a car. One of the Park’s best hikes is the Ramapo-Dunderberg Trail, a Moderate-rated 3.5 mile hike over several creek crossings and some fun rock scrambles. Thinking about a new pair of hiking boots? Old Croton Aqueduct Trail

Metro-North stop: Philipse Manor (in the town of Sleepy Hollow)

Trip length: 1 hour from Grand Central Station on the Hudson Line

Created in 1842 as the city’s first water supply system, the Croton Aqueduct was renamed the Old Croton Aqueduct when a newer and much bigger conduit was built nearly 50 years later. The aqueduct was later purchased by the Parks Department and eventually turned into what we now know as the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail , which meanders 26 miles from Van Cortlandt Park in Yonkers to the Croton Dam in Cortlandt, NY. It’s entirely possible to walk or run the entire trail, but if you only have the time in your NYC day trip to tackle a smaller section, try the 7-mile stretch between Sleepy Hollow and Hastings-on-Hudson. You’ll pass through charming communities, get a great view of the newly constructed Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, and stroll through the grounds of Lyndhurst , a gorgeous Gothic Revival mansion. 

You might also choose to bike your way along the aqueduct, but you’ll find a variety of surfaces throughout the trip, including gravel, dirt, and grass, which will make for an uneven ride. Additionally, the path often uses public roads, so be prepared to navigate around pedestrian sidewalks and vehicle traffic. A mountain or dirt bike is strongly recommended over a road bike if you’re planning to tackle the trail on two wheels. And as long as those wheels are 27” or less in diameter, you can bring your bike on any Metro-North train without a permit .   

Sing Sing Kill Brewery

Metro-North stop: Ossining

Trip length: 1 hour, 5 minutes from Grand Central Station on the Hudson Line

The Sing Sing Kill Brewery was designed to be an all-inclusive gathering space in an underserved downtown Ossining, and a catalyst for its local economy. Their sustainably produced beer uses locally sourced energy, equipment, and ingredients, with most beer styles sourcing 100% of their malt and hops from within New York State. Take a tour of the brewery or pull up a seat in their taproom, which offers tastings of their full line as well as guest taps from NY Farm craft brewers and a selection of NY State Spirits from the surrounding Hudson Valley.

Manitoga – The Russel Wright Design Center

Metro-North stop: Garrison

Trip length: 1 hour, 20 minutes from Grand Central Station on the Hudson Line

American product and furniture designer Russel Wright believed that good design lived in creative harmony with nature and the surrounding environment. These principles thrive at Manitoga , his former home, and workspace. Here you can get a firsthand look at the artist’s studio, mid-century modern home, and the 75 acres of woodland gardens that inspired his work. The property’s trails are open to the public for easy solo hiking, or you could join a guided landscape hike to learn about the rich biodiversity in Hudson Valley, NY.

Hudson Highlands State Park Preserve

Metro-North stop: Cold Spring

Trip length: 1 hour, 25 minutes from Grand Central Station on the Hudson Line

On the east side of the Hudson River is the delightful town of Cold Spring. The Metro-North Railroad definitely makes this one of the best day trips from NYC without a car. Cold Spring is the gateway to Hudson Highlands State Park. With 8,000 acres of mostly undeveloped woodland preserve, it’s one of the best hiking and wildlife destinations in the Hudson Valley. There are three trails to put on your radar. For those looking for a less strenuous experience, the Little Stony Point Short Loop is an Easy-rated .09-mile walk through a lovely part of the forest. If you’d like a long trail, the Bull Hill Full Loop is rated Moderate and will take you 5.4 miles past an abandoned rock quarry, early 20th-century farm ruins, a waterfall, and more than one excellent view of the Hudson Valley. Up for a challenge? Consider Breakneck Ridge , an 11.4-mile, Hard-rated hike full of rock scrambles, elevation gains, and stunning scenery. 

A note of caution: this area can get pretty buggy, especially in the spring and fall (we speak from unfortunate experience). Douse yourself in some eco-friendly insect repellent before heading out and keep those ticks away.

A Sustainable Weekend Escape in Beacon, NY

Metro-North Railroad Stop: Beacon

Trip length: 1 hour, 30 minutes from Grand Central Station on the Hudson Line

There are a ton of exciting things to do in Beacon, NY, but one of our personal favorites, and one of the best Hudson Valley attractions, is Dia: Beacon , a contemporary art museum housed in a former Nabisco printing factory. It features works by late-20th century heavy hitters like Dan Flavin, Richard Serra, and Andy Warhol. After you’re done marveling at a larger-than-life art installation, it’ll be time for lunch at Vegetalien , a locally sourced, 100% plant-based cafe and juice bar in downtown Beacon. Then, cap off your day with a tasting at Hudson Valley Brewery , where they use renewable energy to brew their entire line of craft beers, or Denning’s Point Distillery , who sources locally grown grains for their seven different spirits. Pro tip: grab a drink to go for your ride back to the city – it’s legal to consume alcohol on Metro-North trains. Just remember to drink responsibly! 

But wait, there’s more!

Have some extra time in your schedule? There are so many great things to do in Beacon, NY, you might consider turning your Hudson Valley day trip into a long weekend in Beacon with a stay at the Roundhouse , a 200-year old property whose owners saved the buildings from demolition and restored as much of the original structures as possible. 

On your second day in Beacon, NY, take a guided kayak and walking tour of Bannerman Castle , an abandoned 100-year old castle on an uninhabited island in the middle of the Hudson River and one of the top Hudson Valley attractions. Or, you might opt for a 2-hour sail on the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater , a 106-foot long tall ship that conducts on-board environmental education sessions and works to protect the ecology of the Hudson River. When you’re back on dry land, use your reusable shopping bag to pick up some fresh fruits and veggies at the Sunday Beacon Farmers’ Market , which helps support local farms and businesses.

Watersports on the Long Island Sound

Metro-North Railroad Stop: Westport

Trip length: 1 hour, 40 minutes from Grand Central Station on the New Haven Line

Thanks to its relatively calm waters, The Long Island Sound is a great place to get your feet wet (literally), and makes for one of the best day trips from NYC to Connecticut. Don’t know your bow from your stern? Sea Kayak Connecticut has you covered. In addition to renting individual kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and peddle kayaks by the hour, they also offer half-day introductory kayaking classes and guided tours of nearby coastal islands like Cockenoe Island and Sprite Island. Alternatively, heed your need for speed on a Fliteboard eFoil, an emission-free, battery-powered surfboard that allows you to glide above the surface of the water at 20 miles an hour. Walkway Over the Hudson

Metro-North stop: Poughkeepsie

Trip length: 2 hours from Grand Central Station on the Hudson Line

Soaring 212 feet over the Hudson River, the pedestrian walkway on the steel cantilever Poughkeepsie Bridge provides some of the best views in Hudson Valley, NY. The wheelchair-accessible and bike-friendly Walkway Over the Hudson spans 1.28 miles from Poughkeepsie, NY on the east side of the river to Highland, NY on the west, and is perfect for a leisurely stroll, a quick run, or anything in between. Walking back over the bridge to Poughkeepsie makes the trip almost 2.5 miles long, so make sure to refuel at Laughing Gut Kombucha , the area’s only kombucha taproom, before catching your train back to the city.

Philadelphia

The catskills, fire island, atlantic city, rockaway beach, ny, governors island.

About 100 miles south of NYC, the nation's first capital city is rife with activities for all types of travelers. Culture hounds can wander the Philadelphia Museum of Art, history buffs can sightsee at Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell Center and everyone will enjoy the food at Reading Terminal Market. Philly can easily be reached by bus, train or car.

Situated about 140 miles north of New York City, this mountain region is perfect for exploring the great outdoors year-round. During the warmer months, travelers can camp, hike and fish around the various towns and lakes, while autumn is perfect for taking scenic drives to admire the fall foliage and covered bridges. Come winter, this vacation spot is a convenient option for skiing and snowboarding.

About 180 miles northeast of NYC, Providence is a slightly farther trip, but it can be reached by car, bus or train. This city offers a walkable downtown and a mix of historic and cultural attractions. You could spend a full day exploring the RISD Museum, but save time to admire the colonial homes along Benefit Street before dining on Italian cuisine in Federal Hill.

A drive of about 160 miles down the Garden State Parkway will land you in this delightful Jersey Shore town. You can spend the day lounging on the clean beaches or meandering through the National Historic Landmark District (the only entire U.S. city to be designated as such) to see the grand, colorful Victorian homes.

This seaport village at the mouth of the Mystic River has been around since the 17th century. Today, it's home to two of Connecticut's most-visited attractions: The Mystic Seaport and the Mystic Aquarium. After a day of sightseeing, head to Mystic Pizza, the restaurant that inspired the 1988 movie starring Julia Roberts, before driving the 130 miles back to NYC.

The capital of Connecticut sits less than 120 miles north of NYC and is accessible via train, bus or car. The city is home to a range of historical attractions that literary fans will love, including the Mark Twain House & Museum, which dates back to 1874. If literary history doesn't interest you, you can also take your pick of golf courses in the area.

Sitting about 60 miles east of the heart of New York City, this barrier island is an ideal summertime retreat for those who don't want to splurge on a Hamptons vacation. You can easily spend the day lounging along the Fire Island National Seashore or Robert Moses State Park. Once the sun sets, head to Ocean Beach to enjoy the island's famous nightlife.

The famous Atlantic City boardwalk is only about 120 miles south of NYC, meaning it’s possible to spend the day at the beach without having to spend the night. If you do want to make a weekend out of it, though, you’ll have plenty of hotels to choose from, as well as casinos, restaurants and spas.

For a quick jaunt to the beach, head to this stretch of sand in Queens. This family-friendly beach is home to the city's only surfing areas as well as a boardwalk, several playgrounds and plenty of affordable eats. You can reach Rockaway Beach via the A train or take the scenic ferry for only $2.75 one-way.

Located a stone’s throw from Manhattan (800 yards) and from Brooklyn (400 yards), this 172-acre island is accessible via ferry from either the Battery Maritime Building (Manhattan) or Pier 6 (Brooklyn) for $2 round-trip fare. The island is a great place to spend the day biking, walking, zip lining or attending a festival, but keep in mind it’s only open May through October.

With long stretches of beach and some amazing towns and villages to visit, you certainly won’t run out of things to do here during your weekend getaway from NYC.

So, whether it’s some incredible retail therapy in East Hampton or a bougie trip to a winery that you’re after, you’ll find it all in The Hamptons. 

When thinking of places to visit outside of New York… this is a classic choice.

Jones Beach Island

Jones Beach Island was named after Major Thomas Jones who came to Long Island in 1692, and it remains one of the most popular weekend getaways from NYC.

If you’re looking for places to visit outside New York, then this ticks all the boxes. It’s only a short drive away (2 hours) and it’s a world away from the bustling city streets.

This wonderful coastal city tends to attract the brightest and boldest around, and it’s a great day out or weekend away.

However, despite being famous for its educational facilities, New Haven is so much more than a University town.

With amazing art galleries, a fantastic museum, and even some Egyptian Revival Gateway, New Haven should certainly be on your list of places to visit outside of New York.

New Paltz is a gorgeous option when you’re looking for romantic weekend getaways from NYC. It’s a short drive (about 2 hours) but you can also get the train up there too – so it’s pretty easy to reach.

New Paltz is the country-life postcard. It’s beautiful fields and meadows, a little village with tons of charm, and it’s known for farm-to-table dining (great for foodies!).

Scranton is next on my list of weekend getaways from NYC. Located in northeast Pennsylvania, this TV-famous city is one of the best weekend getaways from NYC.

In case you weren’t aware, Scranton is the place in which The Office was set – cool, right!?

To be honest – this suggestion is pretty much for the Office fans out there (check out this road trip itinerary for filming locations !).

You’ve watched it on Netflix a million times, and there’s so much fun and nostalgia making it a location for your weekend getaway from NYC!

If you aren’t into The Office though, there’s plenty more to explore here than looking for some great merch. One of the most amazing things that Scranton has to offer in terms of attractions is the Steamtown National Historic Site.

Home to century-old locomotives that are set on a former rail yard, this museum is an absolute must-visit if you’re in the area! This is a quirky choice for weekend getaways from NYC, but a fun one!

Philadelphia

Ok, how could I write a list of weekend getaways from NYC – and not include Philly? Now, Philadelphia is huge, so you may not be able to see much on a day trip from the city, but it’s a great option for a weekend away from NYC.

With some of the best historic attractions in the U.S. (notably the Liberty Bell!), it’s unsurprising that Philadelphia is one of the top weekend getaways from NYC.

Oh, and if you do pay Philly a visit, be sure to check out some of the area’s restaurants. Did someone say Philly Cheese Steak?

Next on my list of weekend getaways from NYC, it’s Baltimore.

Just further down the coast from Philly, is Baltimore. I love Baltimore, it’s a small city, but it’s scenic and have this lovely charm to it, and there are plenty of things to do there.

Fort McHenry, which is the birthplace of the U.S. national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” can be found in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor – which means this placed is steeped in national history.

If that’s your thing! I love Baltimore for cute, romantic weekend getaways from NYC.

Sleepy Hollow

If you’re looking for weekend getaways from NYC around autumn and Halloween… then you really can’t go wrong with Sleepy Hollow.

You’ve probably heard of this place because of the movie (by the same name) but the good new is, it’s less than an hours drive from the city center and super easy to get to.

What makes Sleepy Hollow worth visiting? It’s a lovely change of pace to city life, and it’s got some unique stories tell.

There are also LOADS of things to do in Sleepy Hollow – so you could easily spend a few days there and pack your days full of activities.

Yes this is a slightly spooky weekend getaways from NYC… but I know some of your will love that it’s a bit different!

Port Jefferson Village

Next on my list of weekend getaways from NYC, it’s Port Jefferson Village.

Though Port Jefferson is a tiny village in Long Island, it’s certainly charming. With a population of only 7,750, you certainly won’t run into too many folks whilst on your travels here!

Despite being quite a sleepy town, there’s plenty to do here, which is why it’s next on our list of the best weekend getaways near NYC.

As Port Jefferson is a waterside town, we highly suggest checking out its beautiful waterfront views.

As the waterfront is packed with shops, coffee spots, and great restaurants, it’s the perfect place in which to relax and unwind if you’re finding yourself worn out from city life!

If you’re looking for a cute, quirky place to visit for your weekend getaways from NYC – then Rhinebeck would be a great choice. It’s easy to reach by train and by car – so it ticks those boxes!

In terms of weekend getaways from NYC – Rhinebeck is a pretty solid choice for a weekend away.

You have the nature and beautiful scenery of upstate New York, but you also have a bustling and very friendly town with lovely shops, cafes and restaurants to enjoy too. There are loads of things to do in Rhinebeck !

Atlantic City

Next up on my list of weekend getaways from NYC… it’s Atlantic City.

Atlantic City is essentially New Jersey’s very own Las Vegas. Acting as a dedicated resort city on the Atlantic coast, Atlantic City is absolutely one of the top places to visit outside of New York.

Packed with casinos, wide beaches, and an iconic Boardwalk, it’s one of our favorite picks for day trippers.

If you’re not huge on gambling though, don’t fret, for Atlantic City has plenty more in store for you!

With numerous spas, famous entertainers, and some great high-end shopping on offer, you certainly won’t leave the AC disappointed. 

It’s a classic choice for weekend getaways from NYC – especially when a flight to Vegas seems too long and too far.

Another pretty commuter town on my list of weekend getaways from NYC!

This is another great choice for places to visit outside NYC. This is a lovely little town, packed full of gorgeous little stores and cafes, and friendly locals.

There are lots of things to do in Beacon to choose from, but I personally love the galleries and the cultural centre, and the Bannerman’s Castle (which isn’t far from the town centre).

This is a great place for weekend getaways from NYC and you’ll love it all year round.

Check out a spa hotel near NYC

If you’re not bothered by location when looking for weekend getaways from NYC, but want a beautiful hotel and some much-needed relaxation – then a great option to finding places to stay outside NYC, is just to search for a great spa hotel.

There are so many amazing spa hotels near NYC , located in beautiful countryside and with stunning views over the surrounding wilderness. So if you’re hoping to just get some peace and quiet – maybe looking at one of those spa hotels is a good plan!

Spa breaks are the most classic choice for weekend getaways from NYC, and there are so many great ones to choose from!

Next up on my list of weekend getaways from NYC… It’s Brooklyn.

OK… So Brooklyn isn’t exactly miles from Manhattan, but it’s very easy to get to and sometimes even somewhere super close can give you the escape you need from the crowded city.

Head to Brooklyn’s Botanical Gardens, or splurge on a spa hotel in Brooklyn. Or just take the train out to one of Brooklyn’s lovely suburbs and have a stroll around for the weekend. There’s so much to do there.

Croton Gorge Park

Next on my list of weekend getaways from NYC, it’s Croton Gorge Park.

If you’re just looking for a day trip for the weekend, then I really recommend Croton Gorge Park . It’s only a little north of the city, but it’ll give you that nature-fix city dwellers so often need.

There’s quite a few things to do in Croton Gorge Park, including fishing, hiking, walking, picnicing, sledding and skiing (in winter).

So it’s got it all really – and it’s pretty reliable all year round too. Oh and it’s really pretty! Definitely Instagram-worthy that’s for sure!

If you don’t mind driving a little further for you weekend getaways from NYC…

Remember also, if you don’t mind driving a little further afield in New York State when it comes to planning your weekend getaways from NYC… then some incredible places lie about 3-5 hours drive from the city, such as the Finger Lakes National Park.

New York City has so much to offer that many tourists, and even the locals, never venture outside of Manhattan. However, it is well worth escaping the urban jungle to spend time in the peaceful, picturesque surroundings.

Charming historic towns are scattered around the idyllic countryside of New York State and make great day trips from New York City. Especially beautiful in late spring, summer, and autumn, the landscape features forested rolling hills and lush valleys.

Many delightful places to visit are just a 90-minute train ride (or less) from New York City: the colonial-era village of Sleepy Hollow, the quaint rural community of Cold Spring, and the lovely Victorian-era city of Beacon in the Hudson Valley. Even the unspoiled wilderness of Bear Mountain is only a one-hour drive or slightly over an hour train ride away from Manhattan.

Several of the attractions on this list are within greater New York City but are popular day-trip excursions, like Coney Island, Governors Island, and Rockaway Beach; they're ideal for a fun day of recreation and relaxation.

A few destinations on this list are considerably farther away and require a bit more effort to get there. Washington D.C. is over three hours away by train, but it has many impressive cultural attractions that merit the journey. Niagara Falls in Upstate New York is a seven-hour drive from New York City; however, it's possible to visit for the day by taking a flight and organized tour.

Washington, D.C. is a city of epic proportions, in its architectural monuments, as well as cultural heritage. The first president of the United States, George Washington, commissioned French-born city planner Pierre Charles L'Enfant to develop the nation's capital in 1791. L'Enfant designed broad streets and avenues that recall the grand boulevards of Paris, the most elegant capital city of Europe at the time.

The government buildings of Washington, D.C. were designed in lavish Neoclassical style, revealing an architectural and cultural influence from ancient Greece and Rome where democracy first flourished.

Today tourists are inspired by the city's rich heritage, seen in its iconic landmarks, evocative memorials, and superb museums.

Among the many tourist sites of Washington, D.C. , two of the most emblematic are the magnificent domed Capitol building, seat of the House of Representatives and the Senate, and The White House , the U.S. President's official residence. Tours of the Capitol are available for individuals and groups (advanced reservations are recommended). Guided tours of The White House must be scheduled in advance.

To admire larger-than-life tributes to important U.S. Presidents, visitors should see the Jefferson Memorial and the beloved Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall , an expansive park space. In view from the Jefferson and Lincoln memorials is the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial (unveiled in 2011) honoring the prominent leader of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement.

Art lovers and history buffs could spend days just touring the museums in Washington D.C. The Smithsonian Institution alone consists of 17 different museums, including the National Portrait Gallery , which exhibits portraits of the nation's most influential figures; the popular National Museum of American History ; and the National Air and Space Museum , which chronicles the history of aviation and space travel.

The newest addition to the Smithsonian Institution is the National Museum of African American History and Culture . The extensive collection features diverse topics such as exhibits about Harriet Tubman, historical records of enslaved persons, a South Carolina plantation cabin, photographs of the Tulsa Race Riot, a collection of fliers about hip hop and jazz music events. Admission to the museum requires a timed-entry pass.

Travelers can take the train from New York City to arrive in Washington D.C. However the train ride is 3.5 hours each way, so it's recommended to leave early to ensure a full day of sightseeing. An easier option is going on an organized tour, which allows tourists to visit many of the city's top attractions on a day trip. The Washington, D.C. It's an easy and worthwhile day trip to Philadelphia, just one hour and 35 minutes away by train from New York City. In fact, many Philadelphians commute to work daily in New York City. However, the two cities feel further away in ambience, as Philadelphia has plenty of green spaces and more of a small-town feel.

The main tourist appeal of Philadelphia is its connection to American history. The Old City district (Independence National Historical Park), a one-square-mile historic section of downtown Philadelphia, is packed with landmarks: Independence Hall where the Declaration of Independence was adopted; the famous Liberty Bell ; Congress Hall; the Betsy Roth House ; the Benjamin Franklin Museum; and the Museum of the American Revolution.

One particularly enchanting corner of the Old City is Elfreth's Alley , the country's first residential street (dating to 1702). The Old City also has many shops, art galleries, and restaurants.

Outside of the Old City, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) display superb fine arts collections.

Philadelphia is a modern multicultural city with a Chinatown and a large Italian neighborhood ( South Philadelphia ). Philadelphia also has a gritty urban aspect: the grey skyscrapers and industrial warehouses surrounding the historic monuments.

For the most rewarding and stress-free way to visit Philadelphia on a day trip, it's a good idea to take an organized tour. Departing from downtown New York City, the Philadelphia and Amish Country Day Trip is a full-day guided tour that covers Philadelphia's highlights plus a stop in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and a jaunt through the Amish farm country on a horse-drawn buggy ride.

Considered one of the best-preserved 19th-century towns in the Hudson Valley region , Cold Spring is a charming country village only 50 miles north of Manhattan. The picturesque historic center was built up along the Hudson River.

A babbling brook runs right through the town's Main Street , which is lined with restaurants, boutiques, and antique stores. During summertime, visitors enjoy having coffee at sidewalk cafés and dining by the riverfront or at the restaurants with outdoor patios, many of which offer live music.

Cold Spring has a pleasant riverside park and gardens that inspire relaxation. In the wooded rolling hills surrounding the town are many hiking and biking trails that lead through pastoral scenes of leafy trees and alongside freshwater streams.

Visitors can also participate in water sports, including boating, kayaking, canoeing, paddle-boarding, and waterskiing on the river. In the autumn, fall foliage cruises are popular.

During the summer months, the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival takes places at an outdoor theater in nearby Garrison (one mile away) on the grounds of the Boscobel House and Gardens . Just seven miles from Cold Spring in the lush Hudson Valley countryside, Beacon is an easy day-trip destination from New York City. The car or train (on the Metro North Railroad ) takes about 90 minutes.

The historic town of Beacon brims with classic Americana charm. Handsome red-brick architecture distinguishes the Main Street , which these days is buzzing with activity. Victorian-era buildings are now filled with locally owned boutiques, antique shops, art galleries, museums, cafés, bakeries, and trendy restaurants, as well as more traditional establishments.

Bear Mountain State Park is an idyllic retreat in nature, about 50 miles north of New York City on the west bank of the Hudson River. The area was established as a protected nature preserve in 1910, and today is one of the most popular state parks in the United States.

Hikers and cyclists relish the rugged scenery and endless choice of trails. Hundreds of marked paths traverse the park, a vast wilderness that encompasses over 5,000 acres of wooded mountain terrain, including a lake and river with fishing access.

Another favorite attraction among youngsters is the Trailside Museums and Zoo that educates visitors about natural history, the local environment, and indigenous wildlife. The zoo houses rescued mammals that are native to the state of New York.

Topping the list of children's activities is a ride around the Merry-Go-Round . The park's unique carrousel features hand-carved seats depicting animals of the region, such as the black bear, Canadian goose, deer, raccoon, rabbit, and wild turkey.

It takes about 75 minutes to arrive here by train by Metro-North Railroad from Grand Central station to the Peekskill station, and then it's six miles by taxi to Bear Mountain State Park. Alternatively, visitors can hop on the Coach USA at the New York City Port Authority terminal for an easy one-hour bus ride to Bear Mountain State Park.

Sleepy Hollow is a colonial-era village on the Hudson River (about 20 miles north of New York City), an area that was historically a center of farming and milling. It's easy to arrive here by car or the Metro North Railroad (which takes just under an hour from Grand Central Station).

Sleepy Hollow was the setting of Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollo w , the story about a headless horseman, and is famous for its Halloween festivities throughout the month of October, when the town comes to life with haunted hayrides, glowing pumpkins, live music, literary events, street fairs, and parades. Of course, the Headless Horseman is sure to make an appearance.

The Sleepy Hollow Cemetery is considered a must-see sight during Halloween or any time of year. Daytime and evening cemetery walking tours are offered from April through October. For the evening tours, the cemetery is illuminated by kerosene lanterns.

Other tourist highlights in Sleepy Hollow are the 17th-century Old Dutch Church and the Philipsburg Manor , both mentioned in Irving's short story.

Visitors can also try to find the Headless Horseman Bridge , although it's unknown which of the rustic bridges spanning the Pocantico River is the one that Irving described in his story.

Another top attraction is Kykuit , a landmark registered by the National Trust for Historic Preservation that is open to the public for guided tours. Four generations of Rockefellers lived in this stately mansion, which is perched on a hilltop surrounded by magnificent gardens overlooking the Hudson River.

Less than one mile away from Sleepy Hollow is Tarrytown , another quaint colonial village with a National Trust landmark: Lyndhurst , a 19th-century Gothic Revival mansion that was owned by railroad baron Jay Gould. Visitors may take a Mansion Tour or purchase a Grounds Pass to see the lovely gardens on the 67-acre estate.

Tourists can travel a few miles further (three miles away) to Sunnyside , the home of author Washington Irving. This estate in the town of Irvington was originally a Dutch farmer's house and is now open to the public. Beginning in mid-September, the site ("the home of the legend") treats visitors to a special Halloween experience, featuring a scavenger hunt and exhibits about The Legend of Sleepy Hollow .

With its roller coaster rides and famous fairground foods, Coney Island is synonymous with summertime fun. This iconic seaside destination, although not technically an island, is in the southernmost part of Brooklyn, only 14 miles away from Manhattan, and easily accessible by subway.

During wintertime, Metro North, Long Island Railroad, and Amtrak all have routes that chug along different parts of New York State, with station stops that can make for a day trip, an overnight stay, or a quick getaway. Also explore the dramatic bluffs and beaches of neighboring Camp Hero State Park , the site of a former military base at the center of a conspiracy theory that inspired the Netflix hit “Stranger Things.” Treat yourself to the freshest seafood around at the fishermen-owned Inlet Seafood Dock & Restaurant (reopening February 17), The Montauket , and Hilltop Manor Restaurant . Relax with a pint of Wave Chaser IPA at the rustic tasting room of Montauk Brewing Company , which also has an outdoor patio overlooking a pond. Explore the eclectic shops and art galleries that line Front and Main streets, take a spin on the antique carousel or skate around the ice in Mitchell Park, and pop into the former fire station that’s now home to the popular Greenport Harbor Brewing Company for a fresh pour from the tap. Oenophiles can also embark on a tour of North Fork’s famed wineries including Sparkling Pointe (pictured), Bedell Cellars , Duck Walk , and Kontokosta with North Fork Wine Tours or New Vine Wine Tours . Dining options in Greenport suit every taste and budget. Noah’s has been a farm-to-table fixture for over a decade with seasonal and regional fare along with a daily happy hour. Learn New York State History in Albany (Capital-Saratoga)

The capital city of New York is buzzing in wintertime with places to keep you entertained during the day and well into the night. Feed your mind with art and history with a tour of the New York State Capito l and visits to the New York State Museum and Albany Institute of History & Art . Lace up some skates and take a peek at The Egg as you glide around the ice at Empire “Skate” Plaza (pictured) or catch a show at the Capital Repertory Theatre , also known as The Rep. Explore the “Greenwich Village of Albany,” walking the cobblestone intersections, admiring the historic brownstones, and popping pop into cozy cafes and independent shops on Lark Street . Albany also reflects craftsmanship through brewing and distilling at Nine Pin Cider Works , Albany Pump Station at C.H. Evans Brewing Co. and Albany Distilling Company . Dining options are abundant. Enjoy Art and Antiquing in Hudson (Hudson Valley)

The “Brooklyn of Hudson Valley” is a paradise of art, architecture, and antiques. Hudson’s Warren Street (pictured) is a treasure hunter’s delight with unique finds waiting to be discovered from vintage home goods at FINCH Hudson to heirloom textiles at MINNA and mid-century furnishings at Modern on the Hudson . Much of Hudson is noted for its architectural splendor, with magnificent Queen Anne, Greek Revival, and Second Empire homes lining Warren, Union, and Allen streets. FASNY Museum of Firefighting makes for a fun visit while a walk along the riverfront leads to a great view of the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse , standing majestically within the water. You can also take in the winter beauty amid the grounds of the Olana State Historic Site . Meander about Saratoga Spa State Park , check out 007’s collection of Aston Martin’s at the new James Bond exhibit at the Saratoga Automobile Museum (pictured), and take a pampering mineral water soak at Roosevelt Baths and Spa . Find unique threads, classic candy, the perfect bottle of olive oil, and more throughout the downtown shops . Did you know you could take the train to one of the world’s greatest natural wonders? Hop on Amtrak to take an epic nine-hour train trek across the state to see the rushing waters at Niagara Falls State Park (pictured). Stop by “The World Changed Here Pavilion” to learn how Nikola Tesla harnessed the power of the Falls before you descend into the Niagara Gorge at the Cave of the Winds . The Niagara Power Vista shows how hydroelectric power works while the Aquarium of Niagara is home to a variety of marine life. Get a history lesson from Old Fort Niagara , a former military fort that schedules reenactments, and Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center, which tells the stories of freedom seekers and those who aided them. You won’t go hungry in this riverfront city. The Craft Kitchen & Bar has “Bloody Marys, Burgers, and Brunch” on Sunday afternoons, Wine on Third , is a sophistically casual wine bar with classic and innovative dishes, while pierogies await you at Gadawski's , a venerable Polish restaurant. On certain dates, the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute’s Savor Restaurant opens for lunch and dinner. Most hotels are close to Niagara Falls, such as the Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino and the Hyatt Place Niagara Falls , which  is next door to the Hard Rock Cafe Niagara Falls USA . While we can never quit NYC, with its  amazing restaurants , internationally-recognized bars and world-class museums , the crowds, the hustle and the pace, however, can lead to some serious stress and, well, sometimes we need a weekend trip.

Fortunately, the location of our fine city affords easy access to many other exciting, yet more relaxed destinations. These weekend getaways from NYC offer fun, relaxation and a little something different not too far from home.

Whether you’re taking a car or public transportation, these destinations are easily accessible in five hours or less. Enjoy nature, chill by a lake, take in some art or do a little shopping. From quaint towns to beachy locales, a weekend away will be just the thing to recharge. If you don’t have a whole weekend to spare, consider one of these day trips from NYC . Looking for a longer getaway? A road trip from NYC might be for you. But these weekend getaways are just right, opening up a whole new world in upstate New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and more.

Weekend trips from NYC

1.  Bear Mountain, NY

In the time it would take to make it across town during rush hour, adventurers can get to Bear Mountain for an easy escape from city madness.

Do this: The state park, situated in the mountains rising from the west bank of the Hudson River, which offers a bevy of hiking and biking trails, as well as picnic groves, lake and river fishing access, a swimming pool and a zoo.

Stay here: Bear Mountain Inn , originally built in 1915, hosted Eleanor Roosevelt, Harry Truman and Dwight Eisenhower back in the day, and has been extensively renovated to include 15 luxury guest rooms, plus a spa and a restaurant. 

2.  Asbury Park, NJ

The summertime gay community in this shore town has actually been active since the 1950s—and over the past few years, the scene’s really heated up.

Eat here: MOGO Korean Fusion Tacos, a favorite among both visitors and locals. 

Stay here: Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel , which was originally designed by noted Beaux Arts architect Whitney Warren.

3.  Beacon, NY

Beacon is steeped in history (Beacon Mountain, the tallest point of the Hudson Highlands, played a significant role in the American Revolution), but besides its storied past, it’s also packed with modern-day culture. The city has an arty, indie spirit that attracts…arty, indie people.

Do this:  A former Nabisco box-printing facility on the banks of the Hudson, Dia:Beacon holds collections from the 1960s to the present. Exhibitions meld with works on long-term view from artists including Walter De Maria and Dan Flavin. 

Stay here: Sitting at the base of Mount Beacon—a mile and a half from the town’s center—the Swann Inn of Beacon is a charming bed-and-breakfast. Situated in an 1866 Gothic house, it has five uniquely decorated rooms, which all have retro-cool vibes that would make Wes Anderson blush, including the Red Parlor Suite, a romantic respite complete with a friggin’ front porch). 

4.  New Hope, PA

New Hope is Bucks County’s jewel, unhurried and unassuming, with indie boutiques, seasonal-focused eateries and forget-all-your-troubles B&Bs galore. Between hopping to different quaint spots, be sure to get back to nature. We suggest cruising on a rented bike down the Delaware Canal towpath.

Do this: With 134 acres featuring hundreds of species of native plants (including more than 80 that are rare or endangered) and stunning woodlands and meadows throughout, Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve offers guided walks in addition to talks and workshops (“Focus on Ferns,” anyone?). 

Stay here: A AAA Four Diamond winner for eight consecutive years, The Inn at Bowman’s Hill is damn swoonworthy. Rooms, like Fountain View and Orchard Retreat, have heated tubs for two—if that’s your bag. For platonic pals, there’s the Penthouse Suite, with its private deck and panoramic views of the property. 

5.  New Paltz, NY

Beyond all the worth-the-trip views of riverside bluffs and verdant trees, New Paltz is the most historic on this list, with preserved houses that were around 100 years before we even became the U.S. of A. So, yeah. Pretty old.

Do this: Learn about the lives of the 17th-century Huguenot settlers , as performers (dolled up in duds from the period) take you through 30 buildings over 10 acres, including seven historic homes and a reconstructed 1717 church. (Want to retain the back-to-basics spirit as you take in the National Historic Landmark District? Leave the selfie stick at home.) 

Stay here: Mohonk Mountain House , set in the Shawangunk Ridge on Lake Mohonk, is sporting and sophisticated, a sort of East Coast version of The Shining grounds (without all the killing and stuff). Whether you choose one of the classic, wood-paneled rooms and suites or one of its private cottages two miles away, your nightly rate gets you access to a range of complimentary activities like boating and swimming, not to mention meals in its dining room. 

6.  Lake Placid, NY

The beloved lake is just the beginning: This prime Adirondacks spot features art, shopping, hiking, swimming and one killer mountain. 

Do this: If you're already planning to go out to admire all the greenery upstate New York has to offer, visiting The Wild Center is a must if you want to experience truly unreal nature views. That is, as long as you aren't afraid of heights. Why? Oh, because when you go, you'll be walking an elevated trail across the Adirondack treetops. No big deal!

Stay here:  The seven-acre, 131-unit Mirror Lake Inn can’t be beat. Every room looks over the lake, and the cozy fireside accommodations (along with two restaurants and a spa) will keep you in your robe late into the day. Or check in to the aesthetic and cozy Eastwind Lake Placid .

7.  Hudson, NY

You’ve probably heard a lot about Hudson , and here’s why: food and antiques. The place does both extremely well—it’s a prime option for rustic fine dining (Ca’Mea) and rare retro finds (just about any storefront on Warren Street). But the other big reason why droves of New Yorkers and, fittingly, DIY businesses and developments are staking their claim on the town is because it’s all ensconced in a gorgeous Hudson River–side environment, dotted with quaint historic homes.

Eat here: The communal, high-end restaurant Wm. Farmer and Sons has a cozy-yet-urban energy, serving up bar snacks, small plates and big plates that make use, whenever possible, of local ingredients. 

Stay here:  The Hudson Whaler beautifully blends old-timey flavor with contemporary amenities. Set in an Art Deco building, the hotel has 16 well-appointed guest rooms with sleek, sculptural furnishings that match the Deco tone, as well as free Wi–Fi, an iPad lending library, Keurig coffeemakers, pillow-top mattresses and Lather Aromatherapy bath products.

8.  Phoenicia, NY

Tucked into the Catskills, this Ulster County hamlet is a real melting pot, the kind of place where you can expect to see a conservative old-timer and a Brooklyn lumbersexual sipping Buds along the bar in perfect harmony. For every no-nonsense staple (Phoenicia Diner), there’s a hipster newbie (the Graham & Co.). The mellow, no-frills, hippie-dippie local culture makes it easy for anyone to relax here.

Do this:  Explore downtown Phoenicia, go whitewater tubing on Esopus Creek, or explore Kaaterskill Falls. Phoenicia has plenty of adventures, from mild to wild. 

Stay here: Located directly on Esopus Creek in the heart of the Catskills,  Phoenicia Black Bear Campground  is rustic without being primitive. Choose your own adventure: There’s swimming, biking, horseback riding and more nearby. 

9.  Shelter Island, L.I.

A midsize island just a seven-minute ferry ride from Greenport, NY, and surrounded by Shelter Island Sound and Gardiner’s Bay, Shelter Island is all about unwinding, with historic plantations, unassuming cafés, kayaking and, of course, those views that will make your pals rageful that they didn’t join you.

Do this: With more than 2,000 acres of tidal creeks, mature oak woodlands, fields and freshwater marshes, Nature Conservancy’s Mashomack Preserve is one of the richest habitats in the Northeast. Edged in white by 12 miles of coastline, Mashomack attracts birders and botanists looking for ospreys and a number of rare plants—and regular people like us who just want our Facebook feed to look awesome. 

Stay here: Every room at the perennially popular Sunset Beach Hotel has a private sundeck with water views (and loads of Kiehl’s products in the bathrooms, yay). Sunset Beach’s area, with its curving shoreline and spectacular light, is pretty darn similar to the French Riviera.

10.  The Berkshires, MA

Think of the Berkshires as the Hamptons, minus the nightlife and plus all the art, theater, dance, music and small-town simplicity you could want. Yes, the mountainous region in western Massachusetts has luxury, but it’s served in a laid-back setting. And given its jaw-dropping bucolic backdrop, there’s no shortage of outdoor activities, either.

Do this: One of the country’s largest centers for contemporary art, MASS MoCA , which is set in a converted factory building, focuses on large-scale, immersive installations that more conventional museums just can’t handle. There’s just as much focus on performing arts as there is on visual here; each year touts more than 75 performances of music (Wilco’s Solid Sound Festival has been held here), dance, films, theater and more.   Another surefire bet for the performing arts is Shakespeare & Company in nearby Lenox. The thriving regional theater company mixes traditional Shakespearean productions with contemporary works across multiple, indoor and outdoor stages. And do we need to mention that weed is legal here? Try paying a visit to the closest cannabis dispensary to the New York state border: the chic and friendly Rebelle located in Great Barrington.

Stay here: Oriented toward health, wellness and pampering, Canyon Ranch , which is centered around the century-old, lovingly restored Bellefontaine Mansion, has a lot to offer: tennis, aerobics, guided hikes and bike rides, canoeing, croquet and more than 40 seminars and classes daily such as “Finding Forgiveness.” After all that fresh air and, er, learning, relax in the spa while enjoying the signature Canyon Stone Massage or the candlelit Euphoria body treatment. 

11.  Cape May, NJ

Rediscover your inner summertime kiddie at this seaside destination, which has some of the East Coast’s most unspoiled beaches. The unpretentious fun peaks on Fourth of July weekend—when a full-on carnival and an impressive fireworks display bring in throngs of people—but the good times continue throughout the season, with boardwalk vendors and even dolphin-spotting tours.

Do this: Yup, Jersey Shore Alpacas sounds like an MTV spin-off (and it’d be an awesome one). At this small alpaca farm in Green Creek, a quaint town right next to Cape May, mingle with the critters—well taken care of by owners Jim and Tish Carpinelli—during Open Farm Saturdays, when you can meet the cute creatures at the fence and feed them (carrots are provided). 

Stay here: Cape Resorts . One of the area’s Victorian buildings, the 200-year-old Congress Hall is America’s oldest oceanfront resort. It has 104 rooms, as well as a restaurant, bar and lounge, outdoor pool, spa and a fitness center. But despite the full-service amenity list, the best things here are the simple ones, like the smell of salty sea air outside your open window. (Book an Atlantic-view room for the best relaxation results.) 

12.  Philadelphia, PA

2hrs from NYC by car, 1hr and 23min by train 

Aside from the wild football fans and patriotic Liberty Bell-seekers, the city of brotherly love caters to the artistic set through major attractions such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Go to get cultured, but stick around for the amazing restaurants, beer gardens and the cheesesteaks ( duh ) that truly make the city a smash.

Do this: As the crown jewel of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, the  Philadelphia Museum of Art should arguably be the first stop on your list. (Yes, even before the aforementioned cheesesteak). The Hamptons’ gorgeous sandy respites, dunes and relatively untouched landscapes aren’t just for the jet set. The area boasts gratis culture (the Dan Flavin Art Institute ) and no-nonsense places to eat ( Lobster Roll ) and drink (Fellingham’s), plus plenty of other casual nooks for the rest of us.

Do this: Coopers Beach  is the only stretch of silky, fine-grained white sand in Southampton that’s open to the public. So you can look like a baller in your sunset Instagram pic—without having to actually throw down a ton of dough. 

Otherwise, you pay to park at Main Beach in East Hampton or park and walk to Montauk’s Kirk Park Beach. 

Don’t miss a trip to the Montauk Lighthouse for some gorgeous views or a shopping spree in Sag Harbor.

Stay here: Privacy, luxury and amenities reign supreme at the Reform Club . The main building houses seven suites with wood-burning fireplaces (you’ll want to turn them on, even in the summer, just for the fun of it), oversize marble baths and white wainscot walls with original artwork. 

14.  Cooperstown, NY

4hrs from NYC

Cooperstown has way more than baseball, and every true brew head knows this. With four breweries in town, Cooperstown was once the country's hops-growing capital.

Do this: Brewery Ommegang , is located on a 135-acre hops farm and offers daily tours. 

Stay here: The Otesaga , the charming (and reportedly haunted) historic hotel, is celebrating its 106th anniversary. It offers fishing and boating—and serves Ommegang beer, to boot.

15.  Newport, RI

4hrs 30mins from NYC

It’d be easy to dismiss the town as a tourist trap, but what often brings people back to Newport (other than yacht races, tours of a Vanderbilt mansion and smiley locals) are the newish spots.

These Are All Of The Overnight Train Trips You Can Take From New York City

The idea of taking an overnight train ride is usually met with “I’ve always wanted to do that!”…without actually planning a time to do it. But it’s much easier than you might think.

Did you know there are four different train routes you can take from NYC Penn Station on Amtrak that have sleeper and dining cars? The railway adventure of a lifetime doesn’t have to wait until you’re in another country, or even state!

You’ll have to look on the web pages (which you’ll see linked in each number) to see specific features of the routes, but most sleeper cars include the choice of a Viewliner Roomette (two beds, one toilet), a Viewliner Bedroom (two beds, one toilet, one shower, and chair) or a Viewliner Bedroom Suite (two rooms combined with two toilets, showers, four beds, and two chairs).

The dining car and meal options vary as well, but most include a Flexible Dining plan, which features:

• A menu with hot, ready-to-serve choices for breakfast, lunch and dinner
• A wide selection wine, beer and spirits (the first one is on them), plus unlimited soft drinks throughout the journey

Time to get planning! Here are all your options:

1. The Cardinal Line : New York to Chicago (or Charleston, Cincinnati)

The Cardinal Line travels from New York to Chicago, through D.C. to Charlottesville, Charleston, Cincinnati and Indianapolis, operating three days a week. The trip from one end to the other is 26 hours. You’ll pass through the breathtaking the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains, the Shenandoah Valley, and the white-water rivers of West Virginia.

Then, you’ll go west past the Ohio River and see the skyline of Cincinnati, then head through Indianapolis and north to Chicago.

2. Silver Service/Palmetto Lines : New York to Tampa/Miami (or Charleston, Savannah)

The Silver Service/Palmetto Line travels from New York to Miami, by way of D.C., Charleston, Savannah, Jacksonville and Orlando. The full trip takes over 28 hours. In May 2020 the services are getting really fancy: on the Silver Star train, each room will offer linens, towels, pillows, temperature controls, electrical outlets and access to a private restroom and shower. And you’ll also have a dedicated sleeping car attendant on hand to “assist with meals and luggage, provide turndown service, and share great stories of life on the rails.”

3. The Crescent Line : New York to New Orleans (or Atlanta)

The Crescent Line travels from New York to New Orleans, with a mid-journey stop in Atlanta. It offers a chance to see the beauty of the South, with highlights being Charlottesville, Virginia and Greenville, South Carolina.

4. Lake Shore Limited: New York to Chicago, Alongside Bodies of Water

The Cardinal Line travels from New York or Boston to Albany to Chicago daily. The full trip takes 19 hours. It will pass some of the most gorgeous shorelines in the country: from the south shore of Lake Michigan, past the Mohawk River and the Erie Canal, following a famous Native American Highway.

Guide on How to Travel from Helsinki to Lapland

A re you heading to Finland and wondering what the best way to travel from Helsinki to Lapland? Did you know that for most visitors to Finland, these are the two most visited areas? It makes sense as most visitors fly into Helsinki, spend a day or two and then head off into the vast wilderness of Finnish Lapland.

In this guide I will help you in your travel research by providing up to date information on how to travel to/from these regions of Finland, whether its by plane, train or even car. 

One of the biggest factors in your decision about how to get from Helsinki to Lapland will be the amount of time you have and your budget. Below I go through the practical details on the three main transport options, providing the positives and negatives for each so you can make the most informed decision. Let get into it!

What are the airports in Lapland?

As I mentioned there are currently 5 airports in Lapland. Below are the airports with the main locations serviced from them.

Rovaniemi Airport (RVN)

Rovaniemi is the third busiest airport in Finland and is the most popular of the ones in Lapland. Located in the south of Lapland, just near the Arctic Circle, this airport is seen as the gateway to Santa Claus Village. Given the towns popularity, there are several flights a day between Helsinki and Rovaniemi. This is one of the few that also is international airport accepting flights from several major European cities. 

In general, Rovaniemi can feel a quite commercial and crowded, especially during the peak winter season. This airport also serves as the hub for Pyhä  and  Salla which are popular for their natural beauty and skiing, both downhill and cross country. 

Ivalo Airport (IVL)

Two popular destinations with skiers and snowboarders include Inari and Saariselka , which are both serviced by the Ivalo airport. The airport is within 30 minutes of both destinations and is the northernmost airport in Finland.

Kittilä Airport (KTT)

Kittila is one of the main airports in the northernmost region of Finland, and the only other accepting international flights. This airport services the popular ski area of Levi. Levi is a popular spot for families during the festive season, but is smaller and quieter than Rovaniemi. Additionally, the popular Snow Village can be found here.

Our favorite destination serviced by this airport is Muonio which is a laid back destination offering all the popular touristy activities found in Rovaniemi but without the crowds and is excellent for spotting the Northern Lights. 

Kemi Airport (KEM)

Kemi-Tornio Airport is located on the coast of the Bay of Bothnia, serving travelers heading to Southern Lapland. Kemi has slowly become more popular in the tourist circuits for their magnificent Snow Castle that is built there every winter and for the famous Sampo icebreaker cruise. 

Kuusamo Airport (KAO)

Lastly, the Kuusamo Airport serves one of Finland’s major holiday destinations Kuusamo, attracting almost a million tourists annually. Many of these arrive for skiing at nearby ski resorts, especially Ruka Ski Resort , one of the largest in Finland.

A Finnish Lapland Winter Escape

Flying from Helsinki to Lapland

Domestic flights from the capital Helsinki to Lapland airports are operated by Finnair. While the flights can be reasonably priced if booked well in advance, domestic flights on Finnair do impose an extra fee for checked luggage. Additionally, the new Finnair carry on limits are quite strict with a maximum of 8 kg for all carry on items combined. This means, that for most travelers,  it makes most sense to upgrade to the main fare price which includes both carry on and checked baggage. Once you upgrade your flight, a round-trip flight will cost a minimum of €200.  Note, if you are looking for cheap flights, sign up for Finnair’s email blast and keep an eye out for flash sales.

That said, this is still the quickest way to travel between Helsinki and Lapland. It can be cost effective if you are a solo traveler and/or traveling with extremely light luggage. However, it can be get expensive if you need to check a bag or are traveling in high season with several people

Traveling by Train from Helsinki to Lapland

Next we will move on to traveling by train from Helsinki to Lapland , which is the second most popular option.

I personally find travelling by train in Finland to be a wonderful experience and the most convenient way to get around the country. The trains are clean and reasonably reliable depending on weather conditions of course. Additionally, it is better for the environment and saves you money on accommodation if you can take an overnight train to travel while you sleep. All long-distance trains in Finland are operated by VR Train. 

Day vs. Night Trains

The most popular train that visitors take to Lapland from Helsinki is the Santa Claus Express train which ends in Rovaniemi. It leaves close to midnight and arrives around 11 a.m. the next morning. If you are traveling with children, this train is great as the sleeper cabins are essentially sold as a two person cabin. Prices for an upstairs private compartment sleeper cabin which includes a private toilet run around 300 Euro one way. The train also has a restaurant car for snacks and meals while on the train. Note, Rovaniemi train tickets for the sleeper cars can sell out quickly, so book well in advance to ensure you have a cabin.

Another popular route is to Kolari, which is the northernmost railway station in Finland. Travel here from Helsinki takes approximately 14 hours. Boarding is around 7:45 p.m. in Helsinki with a 10 a.m. arrival.  Even though it sounds like a long trip, it goes by quite quickly once you get settled in your sleeper cabin, grab some food from the restaurant car and then hit the sack. 

If you are unable to secure a sleeper cabin, you can consider a day train. With free Wifi, power sockets and the ability to walk around, an 8 hour train would actually go quite quickly if you can keep yourself occupied! These tickets run around €75 per ticket during high season. 

Take Your Car on the Train

For readers who live in Europe or have a rental car already booked, they can consider putting the vehicle on the train as well! These trains depart from Pasila Station and can be extremely handy if you have brought your car over from mainland Europe, but don’t want to drive all the way to Lapland. This is not cheap, but is a dobale option to ensure you have more access to explore around Lapland.

Train Stations in Lapland

There are many train stations in Lapland that I can’t list them all, but the main ending/starting point for the major lines include Kolari as the furthest north, Rovaniemi and Kemijarvi in the east. 

Kolari is in the far north of Finland, northeast of Rovaniemi, and very close to the Swedish border. This station is perfect for those traveling to Levi or Muonio. You can reserve a shared taxi or bus from the station to both locations. 

Kemijärvi is located east of Rovaniemi and from here you can easily access Salla and Pyhä.

Overall, I personally feel that if you are traveling with others or even on your own that taking an overnight train to or from Lapland is a great option. Train travel is scenic, cost effective if you have a family or a lot of luggage and you also have the option of taking a vehicle. The negatives are that it does take a long time and there are times that the trains leave late at night making it awkward for families with smaller children. 

Driving from Helsinki to Lapland by Car

For many travelers further afield, this would mean renting a car and needing to return it either in Lapland or back to Helsinki which can be quite an expense.

I am not sure I would recommend this option for many, but if you have your car and you are confident on driving on the right hand side of the road, in snow or inclimate weather, you will most likely be fine.

But you must be aware that this journey is at least 800 kilometers and can take around 10 hours. That said, the journey up to Rovaniemi is along one main road and the views will be stunning for much of the way.

In general, I’d only advise driving to Lapland from Helsinki if you’re touring elsewhere in Finland, have your own vehicle and have at least a couple of weeks here to make it worthwhile and cost-effective.

Important Information for Your Finland Trip

When is the best time to visit finland.

In reality, you can visit Finland at any time of the year as there are a multitude of activities to suit any weather condition. That said, in my opinion, the best time to visit Finland is definitely during the winter months between December and February. This is when you will see the most beautiful winter wonderland landscapes and you have a great chance to see the aurora borealis. Note, it is also the coldest time of the year, so you will need to prepare for that!

What is the best way to get to Finland?

Finnair offers direct flights to Helsinki Airport from all over the world, including from here in Los Angeles. The international flights are on newer Airbus A350 planes which have ample legroom, flight cameras and more. Subscribe to their newsletter for deals and special offers if this is a trip you are looking to plan far in advance. 

If you are in mainland Europe, you can also make your way overland to Tallinn and take the Viking Express over to Helsinki for a very affordable rate. Note, this is also a great day trip idea from Helsinki.

Where do you recommend to stay in Helsinki?

There are so many amazing options to stay in Helsinki. I think where you stay is dependent on what you want out of your visit. During my stay in the city I was leaving on an early morning ferry and arriving late at night from the airport so I chose the Noli Studio Apartments which were cheap, clean and convenient to everywhere I wanted to go. There are several of them located throughout the city, so pay attention to the neighborhood that you wish to be in! 

If you want a little more luxury and don’t mind being a little further out, consider the Clarion Hotel which is a favorite for repeat visitors to the city. 

What are the best things to do in Finland?

What do I need to pack for Finland?

Layers is the short answer. The longer answer will depend on what time of year you are visiting. Assuming you visit during the high season of winter, you will need to pack a lot of warm breathable layers such as merino wool . Overall, I would say to focus on layers, good boots that have room for several pairs of socks, good gloves or mittens and a warm hat.

Memorial Day officially kicks off the summer travel season here in the US, and millions of travelers plan relaxing long weekends around it. But in order to get to a sunny beach or serene national park to unwind, you'll likely have to contend with stressful crowds and traffic—unless you time your great escape exactly right.

No matter what type of transportation you choose, Memorial Day traffic will be inevitable this year. According to AAA data, nearly 44 million Americans will be traveling over the holiday stretch from Thursday, May 23 to Monday, May 27. That’s the second highest number AAA has seen since it began tracking Memorial Day data in 2000.

“We’re projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead,” Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel, said in a statement.

Fortunately, there are a few simple steps travelers can take to avoid the worst of the hubbub, whether on the interstate, at the airport, or a train station. Being smart about when to depart and return can make a huge difference in terms of traffic—and smoothing out other logistics.

Here’s a guide to the best and worst times to travel over Memorial Day Weekend , broken down by mode of transport.

According to AAA’s projections, the majority of travelers will be hitting the open road this Memorial Day : More than 87% of travelers—a whopping 38.4 million people—are planning to take a road trip over the weekend. That’s the highest number of Memorial Day drivers AAA has ever seen, meaning planning ahead will be more important than ever.

In general, it’s a good idea to get an early start when driving on Thursday and Friday. On those days, the best car travel times will be before 11 a.m., according to AAA’s report, which used traffic data from Inrix. After 7 p.m. on Thursday or 8 p.m. on Friday will also see lower traffic numbers. The worst times to be on the road on Thursday and Friday will be from about noon to 7 p.m. (all local time).

When returning home on Sunday or Monday, you’ll want to avoid driving between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., as those times are projected to be the most congested on the road. Instead, aim to depart before 1 p.m. on Sunday or after 7 p.m. on Monday when the number of cars on the road will be significantly lower.

AAA and Inrix also mapped out the peak Memorial Day traffic periods throughout the weekend for 16 major cities across the US. If you’re driving to or from a major metropolis, it’s worth checking out the table for the worst traffic time for your destination. For example, if you plan to drive to Tampa, Florida, at 9 a.m. on Sunday (forecasted to be the city's peak congestion time) on Interstate 75 south, you can expect your journey to be 88% longer than normal. “Travel times are expected to be up to 90% longer than normal,” Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at Inrix, said in the AAA release. “Travelers should stay up to date on traffic apps, 511 services, and local news stations to avoid sitting in traffic longer than necessary.”

If you’re renting a car , prepare for long wait times at the rental lots, especially in popular vacation destinations like Orlando, Denver, Atlanta, Boston, and Las Vegas, which are showing the highest rental demand, according to car rental company Hertz. The busiest pickup days will be Thursday May 23 and Friday May 24. Before setting out on your trip, check with your car rental company to see if they offer an expedited pickup option. Companies usually offer express checkout or fast lane options for members of their loyalty programs, which are usually free to join. You could also consider alternative car rental companies like Turo and Kyte, which offer up private drivers’ personal cars through an app. These options can be cheaper and will help you sidestep hectic rental lots altogether.

Train journeys

AAA predicts that an additional 1.9 million travelers will take other modes of transport this Memorial Day, including buses , cruises , and trains .

Summer is one of the most popular times of year for travelers to book trips on Amtrak , with the holiday weekends being especially busy. Although data from Amtrak on which routes and departure times would be busiest wasn’t immediately available, it’s safe to assume that the busiest travel times will be close to the general guidelines for road travel. With that said, prepare for packed trains on Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to about 8 p.m., and for crowds on board to peak on Sunday and Monday later in the day, from about 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

If your train offers business class, you might consider upgrading your seat. Not only does the premium car allow more leg room and complimentary drinks, but you also get a seat assignment in advance, allowing you to bypass the scramble for a spot after boarding.

If you're traveling by Amtrak train over the long weekend, consider upgrading to business class so you can nab a favorable seat assignment.

AAA says that more than 3.5 million air travelers will take to the skies this holiday weekend, an increase of 4.8% over last year.

Friday, May 24 will be the peak travel day at US airports with 26,265 flights scheduled to take off across the country, according to data from aviation analytics firm Cirium. TSA forecasts show Friday will also be the busiest day at airport security checkpoints, with the agency anticipating to screen nearly 3 million passengers that day alone.

All this means you’ll want to follow the standard advice of arriving at the airport at least two hours before a domestic flight (and three hours for international ones), especially if you’re returning a rental car, checking bags, and/or don’t have a membership to and expedited security service like TSA PreCheck or Clear.

If possible, it's always smart to try and get on the first flight of the day, says Hopper’s Memorial Day report . “In general, flights departing after 9 a.m. are two times more likely to be delayed than departures scheduled between 5-8 a.m.,” the report says. “To avoid travel disruption, fly as early in the morning as possible.”

Here’s a look at the 10 US airports that will be the busiest over the long weekend, and the busiest travel times at each one, according to Hopper’s predictions.

• New York City JFK: Busiest time to depart: 4 p.m. - 8 p.m.
• Charlotte CLT: Busiest time to depart: 8 a.m. - 12 p.m.
• Las Vegas LAS: Busiest time to depart: 8 a.m. - 12 p.m.
• Orlando MCO: Busiest time to depart: 8 a.m. - 12 p.m.
• Seattle SEA: Busiest time to depart: 8 a.m. - 12 p.m.

There are a few things you can do to make sure the airport security screening goes as smoothly as possible. If you’re enrolled in a trusted traveler program like TSA PreCheck, make sure your known traveler number (KTN)—a unique ID sequence of letters and numbers—is on your boarding pass. Without it, you won’t be granted access to the PreCheck lane. You can add your KTN to your reservation during the booking process, or after you purchase your tickets by calling the airline. You can also ask an airline agent to do this at the ticketing desk in the airport, but expect long lines.

Currently, 20 domestic airports allow travelers to schedule a free fast-track through the regular security line by reserving a time slot online. The shortcut, called Reserve by Clear, is completely free of charge and essentially allots fliers a set appointment time so they can breeze through security.
