8 must-visit destinations under an 8-hour flight from New York City

best international trips from nyc

Living in New York City means there’s no shortage of things to do, places to visit and fantastic food to eat day or night. When I want an empanada at 2:30am, I get an empanada at 2:30am.

But that also means I sometimes forget a world outside of the five boroughs exists.

Every few months I need a little break from big city life to smell the fresh air and get off the MTA for a while. Luckily, there are a myriad of incredible destinations less than 8 hours from our three major airports; here are 8 bucket list-worthy options.

These are the destinations under an 8 hour flight from New York

Vatnajökull Glacier, Iceland

Driving through Iceland is like exploring the surface of the moon one minute and Mordor the next. Its landscapes are unrivaled, although New Zealand gives it a run for its money. But you don’t have to fly for more than a day to see incredible scenery. In just a few short hours you can touch down, visit the famous Blue Lagoon for an anti-jet lag mud mask and continue on your journey.

On my two week road-trip around the Ring Road, there were waterfalls around nearly every corner and majestic Icelandic horses that were practically begging for a photo shoot. Not to mention the friendly locals who welcome you to their stunning country with a smile and tales of magic fairies in the land of fire and ice. And that’s not to mention the magic of the South Coast , with its black-sand beaches, canyons, small villages and undisputed highlight, Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon.

Start or end your trip with a stroll past the quaint, colorful houses of Reykjavik and the iconic Hallgrimskirkja Church. But don’t forget to try the cities most famous snack, a hot dog or two from Baejarins Beztu Pylsur . It was one of the tasiest and definitely the cheapest meal I had on the island.

Flights from John F. Kennedy International airport are less than 6 hours

Jasper National Park, Canada

Our neighbor to the north is worth more than just a poutine-filled weekend trip to Montreal, eh? Canada is brimming with natural beauty, majestic mountains and welcoming cities from coast to coast.

The Canadian Rockies are full of incredible hiking trails and adventure sports. Ski in Banff, kayak through the crystal clear waters of Jasper National Park and even try bungee jumping. The East Coast has charming fishing villages, otherworldly lobsters and historic port towns. And let’s not forget even farther north in the Arctic where unforgettable glacial vistas and polar bears await.

Depending on which city you fly into, flights from John F. Kennedy International airport are between 1 hour and 6 hours.

Havana, Cuba

For Americans, traveling to the beautiful country of Cuba is illegal if not done correctly. But Intrepid Travel’s  licensed people-to-people trip to this burgeoning travel destination will get you there with no hassle from immigration (and provides local leaders who’ll take you to all the hidden gems). Because why wouldn’t you want to see the best of this culturally-rich tropical island when it’s just a few hours away?

A Caribbean gem, it has postcard-worthy cobblestone streets in Trinidad, vintage cars in Havana and white-sand beaches near Cienfuegos perfect for chilling with a fresh mojito in hand. Try your hand at salsa dancing in the capital city or visit a rustic tobacco farm in Vinales. Whatever you’re into, embrace the digital detox and you’ll discover how much there is to love about this captivating destination. Cuba is one of the best tropical island near New York to enjoy your holiday.

Ollantaytambo, Peru

Peru is a country impossible to forget, so diverse in its many regions that you could spend a lifetime there and not see it all. And the Michelin-Starred restaurants of Lima, the roasted guinea pig (a specialty!) and the fresh Peruvian juices from Cusco’s San Pedro Market are just a few examples of why Peru is a gastronomic powerhouse.

During my trip to Peru with Intrepid Travel we explored dozens of villages with old world charm, stuffed our faces with ceviche, met indigenous women in local Peruvian garb, and climbed Incan ruins. Yep, it’s not surprising that visting Machu Picchu was a highlight of my visit. The Incan citadel is just as incredible as you’d imagine. (My partner and I opted to take the train there, which made for a beautiful journey, but the well-known Inca Trail and lesser-known Quarry Trail hikes are both great options, too.)

Looking to spend longer in this South American gem? Hit up Peru’s Colca Canyon , white city of Arequipa , an gorgeous Lake Titicaca .

Izamal, Mexico

Come for the food, stay for the people. Mexico is so much more than Puerto Vallarta and Cancun; it’s a surprisingly large country with a wide variety of cuisines, landscapes and people, all beautiful in their own unique way. In other words, it’s time to venture away from all-inclusive resorts and get to grips with the real Mexico.

Explore colorful  highland towns , from Patzcuaro to Guanajuato .  Eat street tacos in Oaxaca  that will ruin you for life. And salsa ’til you drop in hip clubs all over Mexico City.  If you’re a water lover, you’ll also love to snorkel in Playa del Carmen’s azure waters and witness Bacalar’s magical “Lake of Seven Colors”. One quick trip south of the border never looked so tempting.

Flights from John F. Kennedy International airport are around 5 hours.

Caye Caulker, Belize

A tropical paradise sandwiched between Mexico and Guatemala, Belize is home to the second largest coral reef in the world and the world’s most famous sinkhole – the Great Blue Hole. (Whether you’re more of a diver or a snorkeler, it won’t disappoint!)

The crystal clear turquoise water is a sure showstopper, but the country’s Mayan ruins (yes, all 12 major ones!) are the cherry on top of an unforgettable destination. Often overlooked and accessible on a day trip from Belize City, Xuanatunich is not to be missed. Additionally, the town of San Ignacio is also notable for its laidback vibes (and nearby waterfalls!) and the island of Caye Caulker is worth a visit for water sports and insanely fresh seafood.

Flights from John F. Kennedy International airport are under 5 hours. Recommended trip: Land of Belize (8 days).

The Cocora Valley, Colombia

Check floating in a volcanic mud pit and touring a coffee plantation in the Cocora Valley (home to the world’s tallest palm trees!)  off your bucket list while in Colombia . This immensely lush and diverse country is home to unmissable hospitality, colorful 16th-century architecture, world-class museums and epic mountain ranges.

The country’s major cities including Bogota, Cartagena and Medellin are all unique in their own way and deserve a few days of exploring their cobblestoned streets. But make sure you carve out some time for stunning Tayrona National Park  – it’s where jungle-clad mountains meet picture-perfect beaches, and is sure to dazzle. And whatever you do, don’t leave without your fill of arepas and ceviche.

9 direct flights from nyc for 2024, starting at $250 round-trip.

N ew York City may not be the center of the world, despite what many of its residents may think. But when it comes to international travel, it’s certainly an ideal place to be. New Yorkers have access to two large-scale international airports — John F. Kennedy and Newark Liberty — offering direct flights to destinations across six continents. (Antarctica, of course, remains a boating journey). And while LaGuardia is widely considered a domestic hub, it does offer direct flights from NYC to a few attractive destinations in the Caribbean and Canada.

All three airports are easily accessible via public transport and boast an array of lounges for frequent fliers, though, like everything else in New York, they have a tendency to get over-crowded. Fortunately, you can enroll in TSA PreCheck or register for Clear at NYC airports to avoid long security lines.

But before you worry about security lines, you have to book your flight, which means figuring out where to go next. Fortunately, there are plenty of direct flights from NYC to international destinations starting at surprisingly low prices.

These are the nine best international flights from New York City to help you plan your next adventure, listed in order of price by airport.

Direct Flights from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)

JFK is also the easiest to access via public transit, with a stop on the E train in Long Island, so you don’t have to pay for an expensive airport shuttle. You’ll want to arrive quite early, however, as it’s the busiest airport in the state.

Flights to Portugal from NYC

best international trips from nyc

  • Flight time: 6 hours, 15 minutes
  • Airlines: Azores, Tap Air
  • Lowest round-trip price in 2024: $880 (February)
  • Where to stay:  This Bright Pink Hotel on a Tropical European Island Is a Literal Dream Getaway

Non-stop flights from JFK to Madeira, Portugal, launched in November 2022 and offer travelers quick and easy access to the idyllic European destination. Madeira and Porto Santo are the two main inhabited islands in the Madeira Islands, a small Portuguese island chain off the western coast of Africa, roughly 350 miles from Morocco. The tropical European island has long been a well-kept secret amongst frequent fliers, renowned for its mountainous coastline, volcanic lava pools, and picturesque vineyards that provide plenty to do.

The new flight path is a sign that the island is increasingly becoming popular on a global stage, and, thanks to its positioning in the North Atlantic, it’s one of the best direct flights from NYC for a long weekend trip (though you may want to stay along its shores for far longer than that). The best months to visit are August and September, when the weather is warmest, though there’s no bad time to visit this Portuguese oasis — the subtropical climate guarantees 12 months of sunshine.

Once you arrive, lounging at the beach is certainly an option, but you’ll find plenty of adventure activities ranging from waterfall-jumping tours to wine-tasting tours in an open-air Jeep. And the hiking is also world-class, with an extremely well-marked system of coastal and inland trails. Oh, and don’t forget to take a wild basket ride while you’re there, too.

Flights to Kenya from NYC

best international trips from nyc

  • Flight time: 13 hours, 45 minutes
  • Airlines: Kenya Airways
  • Lowest round-trip price in 2024: $820 (February)
  • Where to stay: Sleep and Dine With Giraffes at This Giraffe Hotel in Kenya

When Kenya Airways launched its first direct flight from JFK to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi in October 2018, it was a major step forward in connecting the US to East Africa. Previously, travelers on a Kenyan vacation had to connect through Europe, adding days onto an already lengthy trip. But now, your next great safari — or beachside getaway in Lamu — is closer than ever. Just make sure to travel on weekdays when the direct flight is available.

When you arrive in the nation’s capital, try to avoid the typical traveler’s mistake of boarding a Safarilink plane immediately to the grasslands. While Kenya is renowned for its wildlife and savannah, there’s more to the country than just going on safari. Nairobi is home to a vibrant and young urban scene, with lively nightlife, unique coffee shops and restaurants, trendy art galleries, and gorgeous boutique hotels.

Plus, with the city’s close proximity to the elephants of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and the residents of Giraffe Manor , you don’t need to travel far to interact with African animals. Nairobi is one of the few places where you can do a safari in a long weekend , as Nairobi National Park is a mere 30 minutes from the airport.

Flights to New Zealand from NYC

best international trips from nyc

  • Flight time: 17 hours, 30 minutes
  • Airlines: Air New Zealand, Qantas, American
  • Lowest round-trip price in 2024: $1,290 (year-round)
  • Where to stay: The 6 Best Luxury Resorts in New Zealand

Air New Zealand launched the first direct flight between JFK and Auckland in September 2022, eliminating the need for New York travelers to stop in Texas or California en route to the gorgeous South Pacific nation. Sure, 17 hours is a long flight, but it’s a comparatively minimal price to pay for getting to visit. New Zealand is a destination truly worth circling the globe to visit.

Home to dramatic fjords, pristine glaciers, and endless undulating hillsides, New Zealand is famous for its otherworldly nature — hence its nickname of “The Real Middle Earth.” But the culture and cuisine of the Oceania island are also not to be overlooked, and Auckland is the perfect starting point for a trip through NZ.

Thrill-seekers can opt for the Skywalk along New Zealand’s tallest skyscraper for a view of the city, while beach lovers should head west to the coast to enjoy the spectacular sunset at Piha Beach. New Zealand’s world-renowned vineyards are along the eastern coast, while lush rainforests abound in the sup-tropical North Island of New Zealand. Unlike some other direct flights from NYC on this list, there’s not much point in going for just a few days. Budget at least two weeks at a minimum to get a feel for the country.

  • Flight time: 8 hours
  • Airlines: United
  • Lowest round-trip price in 2024: $360 (off and on throughout the year)

While many travelers are already aware of the charms of South American capitals such as Bogota or Buenos Aires, this cosmopolitan destination along the Pacific Ocean remains wildly underrated. And flights are quite the steal, often under $400.

While many visitors view Lima as a stopover to Cusco and Machu Picchu, the city holds a charm all its own. Avid surfers from all over the globe flock to Lima’s beaches as the Peruvian city is among the most underrated surfing destinations in the world (and one of the birthplaces of the sport). Travelers can spend a day on the beach and an evening visiting the bars and restaurants of the popular Miraflores District, home to some of the city’s best nightlife. The Larco Museum has fascinating exhibits on the nation’s pre-Columbian history, and you’ll definitely want to take a walking tour of the innovative street art and galleries in the neighboring district of Barranco.

And if you’re looking to save money before spending Euros overseas, consider a trip towards the end of the year, when round-trip prices dip below $500.

Whether you’re interested in living like a local in the eccentric 18th Arrondissement of Montmartre or clubbing in the Marais, there’s something to entice every type of traveler. • Where to stay: The Top Tokyo Hotels in Each Must-See Neighborhood

After nearly three years of restrictions, Japan reopened its borders in October 2022 and businesses and hotels are anxious to get visitation back to normal levels. And if you’re looking to save money on airfare, check out the rates for a direct flight to Narita International Airport, which are lowest in the fall. That’s also good news for skiers, since the low rates continue into December.

Tokyo is a cultural hotspot and a trendsetting capital, not just within the nation of Japan but throughout the world. You can spend days getting lost in the city’s art districts, historical sites, and shopping centers, experiencing the city’s very distinct historical and modern-day cultures and subcultures.

To capitalize on the country’s natural beauty in the fall, time your trip for November, when the Japanese maple trees ( momiji ) turn red. Much is said about Tokyo’s cherry blossom season in March and April, but autumnal leaf peeping in Japan is just as colorful (and usually more affordable). And Tokyo is so lively that there’s always something happening year-round .

Direct Flights from LaGuardia Airport (LGA)

The small airport is easy to navigate and reachable on the F or N subway lines. And since it’s only 10 miles from Manhattan, it’s cheaper and faster to reach by taxi than other other New York airports, especially if you’re uptown or on the east side. Plus, the recent renovations have been hailed as both innovative and luxurious, and the full $8 billion redesign will be complete by the end of 2024.

Flights to Toronto from NYC

  • Airlines: Air Canada, United, WestJet, Delta
  • Lowest round-trip price in 2024: $250 (all year)
  • Where to stay: 8 Hotels in Toronto With Outstanding Service and Proximity To Must-See Attractions

Consider a trip to our neighbor up north with a jaunt up to Ontario. Toronto Pearson International Airport is just under a two-hour direct flight from NYC’s LaGuardia, and prices are extremely reasonable year-round. Toronto is Canada’s largest city and home to impressive art galleries and museums — not to mention the Hockey Hall of Fame (a tribute to the most Canadian of sports).

Toronto is an ideal place to spend a cosmopolitan weekend exploring award-winning restaurants and outdoor festivals, or doing some nearby sightseeing. Iconic Niagara Falls is nearby (and much more beautiful on the Canadian side), as is Prince Edward Island, a coastal oasis with red-sand beaches every bit as gorgeous as the pink sands of the Bahamas.

6 International Trips That Are Cheaper Than a Weekend in NYC

author image

See recent posts by Kyle Valenta

New York City skyline/Oyster

New York, we love you. That will never change. But you can be an incredibly expensive place that makes us want to use bad words at times. And the truth is that if you're in town as a tourist, you'll be shelling out even more cash than us locals. That's because New York City has some of the most expensive price tags for everything from hotels to museums to entertainment, alcohol, and food -- not just in the United States, but in the world. With that in mind, we're letting you in on a little secret: You can snag a significantly longer trip abroad for less than what you'd spend on just 48 hours in the Big Apple.

For this unscientific -- but thorough -- study, we focused on trips timed for the late fall. Average hotel rates hover around $286 per night for weekends in New York City during this time of year. Over the course of two days, you can also expect to spend at least $75 per person on food, $32 per person on an unlimited Metrocard, $175 per ticket for a Broadway show, and around $20 or more per person to get into the city's major museums like the Guggenheim, MoMA, and the Whitney. So, without even factoring in airfare -- or booze, covers at nightclubs, and taxi fares -- you're looking at spending over $1,300 in a very short time span. Keep in mind that depending on where you're coming from, even domestic flights into NYC can cost upwards of $400 per ticket. If you're driving in, you'll need to budget around $50 per night to park anywhere.

With all of that in mind, we've found six destinations where you'll spend significantly less money and enjoy more time to unwind or see the sights. As an added bonus, many of these destinations can be reached for prices that aren't much more -- and are sometimes less -- than you'd spend on a cross-continental flight from L.A. to New York City. So pack your bags and find your passport: These destinations are bound to have you rethinking your next trip to NYC.

Author's Note: Keep in mind that hotel rates and airfares are subject to wild fluctuations, to say nothing of the variables when considering foreign exchange rates against the U.S. dollar. Prices quotes below are for searches done at the time of writing, and may be higher or lower depending on when you book your trip. As always, you're likely to score the best deals by booking both hotels and airfare farther in advance than closer to your intended date of departure.

Five Days in Madrid

Jorge CG/Flickr

When it comes to charm, beauty, culture, nightlife, and style — Madrid has it all. And what’s more? It’s an incredible value for an international destination, particularly one in Western Europe. Everything from hotel rates to dinners are far cheaper in Madrid than almost any other national capital in Europe, and the costs of a stay in the city are significantly lower than Spain’s most famous tourist town, Barcelona .

Hotel rates in Madrid come in around $100 per night during November, and you’ll likely find that the hotel stock is a bit nicer for the dollar than you’d spend in New York. Sharp new boutique properties seems to open in Madrid every month, and the city has its share of cute posadas and bed-and-breakfasts as well. Try Petit Palace Plaza del Carmen , Artistic B&B , and Hotel Regina for central options that all come in at wallet-friendly prices and have both style and personality.

Food costs are also far lower in Madrid, though you will have to contend with the city’s paltry breakfast eating habits — the meal consists of little more than a pastry, juice, and coffee. Even so, by eating like a local in the morning, opting for a “menu del dia” at lunchtime, and splurging a bit on dinner, you are unlikely to spend more than $60 per person on food per day. If you make a dinner of your tapas bar crawl — where free small plates accompany the beer and wine that you pay for — you’ll save even more money (and be eating like a local).

Madrid’s museums are relatively inexpensive as well, and are some of the world’s most famous. The Reina-Sofia — home to Picasso’s “Guernica” — costs around $12 to enter, and The Prado costs around $18 per person. Or, opt for the free and fascinating Matadero, a former slaughterhouse complex that’s now home to exciting art installations. Nightclub cover charges are rarely more than $15 per person, and tickets to a concert at one of the city’s many intimate salas cost around $20 per ticket.

You can opt for a 10-pass to use the metro, which costs about $15, though Madrid’s Centro — which includes neighborhoods like Huertas, Malasana, Chueca, La Latina, and Lavapies — is entirely walkable. Getting from one major sight to the next will rarely take more than 15 to 25 minutes on foot. Additionally, the city’s mild Mediterranean climate means that for most of the days during November you’ll be fine with little more than a light jacket.

Overall Cost: Given the above prices, a trip for two for five nights falls between $1,000 and $1,275. Additionally, airfares from most major U.S. cities can fall between $450 and $550 per ticket during November, since most Americans are busy flying around the United States to see family and friends as the holidays begin. Take it from us: Bargains like this to Western Europe are almost entirely unheard of, so take advantage of them.

Our Hotel Pick: Petit Palace Plaza del Carmen

The 42-room, upper-middle-range Petit Palace Plaza del Carmen occupies a charming, early 20th-century building set on a relatively quiet square in the center of Madrid. A block from the Gran Via subway station, it’s a great base for exploring many of the city’s attractions and within walking distance of the majestic Plaza Mayor.

Pricing for Petit Palace Plaza del Carmen

Five Days in Cartagena

Walled City/Oyster

New York can be cold and wet in November, so why not head south and get some sunshine. Cartagena is a gem of a destination that blends vibrant colonial history with hipster haunts, buzzing beaches, and wild nightlife. Most travelers will spend the bulk of their time in Cartagena’s atmospheric Walled City, where dazzling colonial buildings line up in almost endless vistas to create something that feels held over from another time — and a bit magical. After all, the city was the inspiration for Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s magical realist stories for decades. However, neighboring Getsemani — a scruffier version of the Walled City that’s packed with street art, trendy cafes, and boutique properties — is also worth a day or two of exploring. And if you want a taste of how locals and Latin American tourists unwind, head to the beaches and nightclubs of Bocagrande.

In late fall, hotel rates come in around $90 per night throughout Cartagena, though it’s obviously pricier to land digs right in the Walled City. If you’re willing to stay in Bocagrande, check out the sharp Hotel Cartagena Plaza , which has a fresh style and rates that are beyond reasonable. Bargains can be found in the walled city, though on average rates there are over $150 per night. Check out the Hotel Casa del Arzobispado for something with personality.

Food is also an incredible value in Cartagena, with a budget for three meals coming in under $40 per person per day. Of course, one of the great pleasures of Cartagena is getting lost in the Walled City on foot. But should you opt for a tour, these are rarely more than $30 per person. Alternatively, you can also stroll Las Bovedas — the series of market stalls that line the old city walls — for free, picking up trinkets and souvenirs for just a few dollars each (at most). There are a number of free galleries in the Walled City showing contemporary Colombian art, including NH Galeria, though tickets to enter venues like La Presentacion Casa Museo Arte y Cultura are only a few dollars per person.

An Uber from the Walled City to the beaches of Bocagrande (or vice versa) will cost less than three dollars in most cases, and cover charges to get into most nightclubs are around the same per person (and generally include a drink). If you want to see one of the cultural performances at stunning Teatro Adolfo Mejia, in the Walled City, expect to pay less than $20 per ticket.

Overall Cost: Cartagena can be an insane bargain — you can spend five days here for just over $900 for two people if you stay in Bocagrande. If you need to stay in the Walled City, you’ll have to adjust your budget upward by about $300 or so, depending on what kind of hotel you want. Airfares from most major U.S. destinations can be found for between $400 and $500.

Our Hotel Pick: Bastion Luxury Hotel

The four-pearl Bastion Luxury Hotel is an excellent option for travelers seeking Old World charm and modern comforts. With 51 rooms, Bastion is one of the larger upscale hotels in the walled city, and has top-notch features such as a rooftop pool, an acclaimed on-site restaurant, a small spa, and a fitness center.

10 Days in Thailand

Reclining Buddha Wat Pho/Oyster

You’re probably thinking, “There’s no way I can spend 10 days in Asia for less than the price of two days in New York City” — but hear us out. November still isn’t peak season in Thailand , and if you’re willing to fly one of East Asia’s budget airlines (China has several), you can land in Bangkok for under $600 per ticket if you time it right.

Once you’re in Thailand, prepare to feel utterly spoiled. Nightly rates are around $70 at the nation’s upscale and mid-range hotels. If you’re willing to lower your standards, you can score rooms for as little $35 per night (or less). We like youthful options like Galleria 10 , with its urban style, and the more intimate Lullaby Inn in Bangkok. In Chiang Mai , check out charming Thannatee Boutique Hotel , which is just outside the old city.

Everything from shopping at Bangkok’s bustling Chatuchak Market — where indie designer T-shirts can be bought for as little as $5 — to sampling the country’s legendary street food is a bargain. Dinner for two in a proper sit-down restaurant is likely to cost around $20, and if you stick to street food for at least one meal per day (which you should, if only for adventure’s sake), your daily food bill for two travelers will likely be less than $35 — total.

Most of Thailand’s Buddhist temples are free to enter — particularly in Chiang Mai. In Bangkok, you’ll likely spend around $20 per person to enter the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, which is home to the stunning Reclining Buddha (that fee covers entrance both temples). Nightlife is extremely cheap as well, and most of the bars in major cities will not charge covers, with domestic beers costing less than a dollar in most spots. If you have to pay a cover to one of the bigger nightclubs in Bangkok, it won’t be more than a few dollars each.

Of course, if you’re intent on spending most of your time in Thailand’s famous beach destinations, like Phuket and the islands in the Andaman Sea or Gulf of Thailand, price tags will rise for everything from food to lodging. Even so, if you stick to just a few days in these spots during your time in Thailand, you’ll still be saving money over a weekend in NYC. Domestic flights between major destinations like Bangkok and Phuket can cost as little as $25 round-trip.

Overall Cost: Including internal domestic flights — the price of food, lodging, a bit of entertainment, and some cultural sights can be for less than $850 for two people, if you play your cards right. That’s a massive bargain by any stretch of the imagination — especially when you add in the airfares offered by many East Asian airlines from the United States.

Where to Stay: Thannatee Boutique Hotel

The 22-room Thannatee Boutique Hotel is a small, mid-range property located just outside of the moat leading into Chiang Mai’s historic old city. Rooms are small, but stylish, done up in northern Thai Lanna style and elegantly decorated with antiques and fine wood furniture, plus they have modern amenities like flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, air-conditioning, and free Wi-Fi. Suites add whirlpool tubs. The hotel has a small swimming pool, an atmospheric restaurant serving northern Thai cuisine, and a library with computers for guests to use.

Five Nights in Mexico’s Yucatan

Terrace at the Hotel Colonial/Oyster

While most travelers think of cities like Cancun , Playa del Carmen , and Tulum when they hear about Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, there’s another side of this corner of Mexico that’s worth more exploring. And what’s more? By skipping the famous beach resorts on the eastern edge of the Yucatan — in the state of Quintana Roo — you’re also able to score an action-packed international vacation for less than the cost of 48 hours in New York.

Hotel rooms in Merida , in the state of Yucatan, average $90 per night, and the city has some utterly charming boutique properties that perfectly complement the city’s fascinating mix of colonial, indigenous, and contemporary local culture. Check out Luz en Yucatan for a quaint boutique property with tons of character, or the simple and central Hotel Julamis .

Meals can run as low as five to ten dollars per person (or less, particularly at lunchtime) in a proper restaurant — including the ones that buzz around the city’s main plaza at night — and street food is, of course, even cheaper. Sights in town include the Museo Maya — chronicling the history of this ancient culture (tickets are around eight dollars per person) — as well as art galleries exhibiting everything from ancient sculpture to contemporary pieces.

Another major perk of staying in Merida is its proximity to some of Mexico’s most famous Mayan sights: Uxmal and Chichen Itza. These take between 60 and 90 minutes, respectively, to reach from Merida, and can be visited by private tours or by taking buses. Private tours from Merida to Chichen Itza are available through Viator (Oyster’s sister company) for an average of $55 per person, and include guides, transport, lunch, and entrance fees. If you’re going solo, the bus costs only $14 round trip, and the tickets into the site cost around $13 per person. Guided tour packages that cover Uxmal, Chichen Itza, and Kabah (another famous local temple) run over two days and cost around $100 per person. Otherwise, it’s a $28 round-trip bus ticket to Uxmal, and entrance to the site costs six dollars per person.

If you need a beach day, head to Celestun, a town surrounded by a sprawling nature reserve that’s home to flamingos and all sorts of wildlife. The beaches here aren’t quite as stunning as those found along the Riviera Maya, but they’re far more peaceful and undeveloped. It’s a 90-minute one-way drive, and can be done as a day trip, or for a night or two (buses run frequently, and though the trip takes over two hours, they only cost around four dollars round trip; alternatively, a private taxi will cost upwards of $100 one way). There are a number of simple hotels in Celestun, with rates between $40 and $60 per night.

Overall Cost: If you opt for using buses to get around the region, skipping private tours and cars, you can spend five days in the state of Yucatan — with Merida as your base — for around $825 for two people, including food, buses, lodging, and entrance fees to major archaeological sights. If you want to throw in private tours and transport to those major sights and towns, you’re adding around $200 to $250 to the price tag, which is still a relative bargain, and gives you plenty of extra spending money.

Our Hotel Pick: Platinum Yucatan Princess All Suites & Spa Resort

The Platinum Yucatan Princess is a solid adult-only all-inclusive luxury resort on the Riviera Maya, and stands out for its extensive facilities and activities program. It has six tennis courts, a multipurpose court for soccer and baseball, a Sports Park with golf putting and archery, and water sports. Other features include six restaurants and eight bars — including swim-up bars at two of the 13 pools — entertainment programs, a fully equipped fitness center, and the Princess Spa.

A Long Weekend in Montreal

Outremont and Parc du Mont-Royal/Oyster

Canada isn’t exactly a bargain-hunter’s delight when it comes to travel, but there are some advantages that cut costs during a trip to the north. That’s particularly true if you’re heading to Montreal and are willing to brave temperatures that range from chilly to frigid. Additionally, a visit to Montreal has the advantage of giving you a taste of something a little farther from home, given the Quebecois French traditions that are still alive and well in the city (don’t worry, though — English is almost universally spoken as well).

To be clear, meals in Montreal aren’t cheap — in fact, prices in most restaurants are on par with what you’ll find in New York City (and you’ll be getting a bit less food, too). This means you should budget at least $75 per person, per day, for meals in Montreal. You can save a little by opting for simple breakfast fare, like pastries and coffee, or pop into St-Viateur or Fairmount, the city’s two legendary bagel shops that are both in the hip Mile End neighborhood.

While food costs add up quickly in Montreal, hotels only average around $140 per night in the late fall. This makes it a steal to bed down at even popular upscale chains like Sofitel Montreal , or at sharp boutique properties like Le Petit Hotel , in Old Montreal. Trips on the metro and bus can be bought in packs of 10 for around $13, making getting around the city relatively cheap and easy over a long weekend.

When it comes to entertainment, there’s a wide spread of options, though on the whole things cost a bit less than they would in New York. For instance, an indie show at Mile End’s famous Casa del Popolo generally runs between $10 and $15, while tickets to see Cirque du Soleil — which originated in this city — start at $50 per person. Admission to the city’s excellent contemporary art museum, MAC, costs around $12 per person, and it’s $16 or so per person to visit the city’s famous Biodome — a fascinating exhibition of different world habitats. Of course, walks in Mont Royal Park, which has stunning views of the city, and around dizzying Jean-Talon Market are free, though make sure you bundle up for the potentially cold weather.

Overall Cost: For the above activities and sights, plus lodging, public transit, and food, you can spend under $1,100 for two people in Montreal over the course of a three-night stay. It’s not the best bargain on this list, but is still far cheaper than a weekend in NYC. Even better? Flights from many parts of the U.S. are short and don’t cost much more than domestic airfare.

Our Hotel Pick: Hotel Nelligan

The 105-room Hotel Nelligan is a four-pearl boutique hotel with a great location in the heart of Old Montreal. Attractive rooms nicely combine historic details such as exposed brick walls with modern amenities like flat-screen TVs and minibars. Some have fireplaces, and others feature huge balconies with beautiful views of the city. There’s also a trendy rooftop terrace that’s open in warmer months.

Six Nights in Istanbul

The Blue Mosque/Oyster

Given Turkish Airlines’ penchant for heavily discounted airfares between many major U.S. cities and Istanbul , if you time your travels right, you just might score a bargain of an international adventure to Turkey’s biggest city. And what an adventure it will be, as Istanbul is one of the most wildly multicultural places on earth, where multiple religions, empires, and philosophies have met for centuries — if not longer. It also happens to be a stunningly beautiful city to explore, with its ancient sights scattered throughout the Sultanhamet neighborhood — including the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Grand Bazaar, and Topkapi Palace. Elsewhere, views across the Bosporus are stunning, and the lanes of Galata and Karakoy are stalked by hipsters and in-the-know travelers.

Hotels can be a bargain in Istanbul, though given this city’s international status, the spread of what’s on offer is drastic — from scruffy budget bargains to posh luxury options. Even so, you can score some amazing upscale digs for an average of $75 per night or less. Try Old World-style Esans Hotel , in Sultanhamet, or Vault Karakoy, The House Hotel , which puts of modern executive spin on classic decor in the more locals-only Karakoy neighborhood.

Of course, the city’s major sights — Grand Bazaar and Blue Mosque aside — all have entrance fees, though compared to costs of similar landmarks in NYC, they are a steal. The Hagia Sophia costs around six dollars per person, while the entire Topkapi complex (which consists of various separate tickets and sights) costs around $25 per person.

Like any good destination worth its salt, the street food scene in Istanbul should play a large role in your food intake. This also keeps costs down, as fish sandwiches — and we aren’t talking depressing McDonald’s sandwiches here — are available along Galata’s waterfront for less than two dollars, making a fantastic lunch. A sit-down meal in a mid-range restaurant averages at around $18 per person (between breakfast and dinner), though you’ll do yourself a favor by skipping the overpriced tourist restaurants in Sultanhamet and opting for meals in Beygolu, across from the Golden Horn, instead. Beer and wine aren’t cheap, but still cost less than they do in NYC.

Riding the metro, bus, trams, and most ferries will cost less than a dollar per trip, making navigating the city incredibly economical. Even taxis are far cheaper than they are in New York. Nightlife isn’t as legendary in Istanbul as some other world capitals, but it’s certainly not a tame affair either. On the Asian side of the city, head to Barlar Sokak (Bar Street) in Kadikoy to hang with the city’s trend-setters in laid-back pubs. Nightclubs can sometimes charge a cover, though it’s rarely higher than $15 at most. Many can be found in Beygolu.

Overall Cost: You’ll have to search for the best airfares and be a little flexible in order to get to Istanbul on the cheap. However, it is possible and may not be much more than peak holiday airfares within the United States (particularly to and from New York City). For six nights in a hotel, using public transit four times per day, visits to the major sights in Sultanhamet, meals, and a couple nights out in the city’s nightclubs, two people should be more than comfortable and still spend less than $1,150 total.

Our Hotel Pick: Ciragan Palace Kempinski

Formerly the palace of an Ottoman Sultan, the Ciragan Palace Kempinski is the grand dame of Istanbul. It wows guests at every turn, from the sprawling, manicured grounds, to the heated infinity pool right on the Bosphorus, to the refined suites. The dining options are extensive and exceptional; the spa is lovely; and the meeting space housed in the original palace building makes an ornate setting for a business function or wedding.

This mountain region in southern New York state, about 140 miles north of New York City is perfect for exploring the great outdoors year-round. During the warmer months, travelers can camp, hike and fish around the various towns and lakes, while autumn is perfect for taking scenic drives to admire the fall foliage and covered bridges. Come winter, this vacation spot is a convenient option for skiing and snowboarding. The region is also home to a number of historic sites, including Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, a cultural center and history museum located on the site of the famous 1969 Woodstock festival.

If you're seeking an escape from the constant commotion of the Big Apple, this region in western Massachusetts may be just what the doctor ordered. City dwellers flock to charming small towns like Great Barrington and Lenox for festivals in the summer, and the beautiful mountain scenery comes alive with color come autumn. The region also boasts renowned luxury spas for more focused relaxation. Keep in mind that while some spots in the Berkshires can be reached by bus and train (this mountain region is located roughly 145 miles northeast of NYC), rideshare options are limited in the area, so a car is recommended.

best international trips from nyc

Roughly 95 miles northeast of Manhattan on Long Island, the Hamptons make for an easy day trip. Though it's a chosen summer vacation spot for the rich and famous, budget travelers can enjoy a getaway without breaking the bank. The beaches are the main draw, but along the dunes you'll find boutiques for window-shopping and seafood restaurants that range from locally owned shacks to high-end establishments. Travelers can also get here via the Long Island Rail Road or the Jitney to save some coin.

Journey about 30 miles north of New York City and you'll find Sleepy Hollow, a quiet town set amidst the lush Hudson Valley. Fans of Washington Irving's 1820 story, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," will want to snap a photo with the Headless Horseman statue and explore the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery on a lantern tour. The town is also home to the historic Kykuit estate, which housed four generations of the Rockefeller family. In nearby Tarrytown, you'll find sights such as the grand Lyndhurst Mansion and the riverfront Pierson Park.

A drive of about 160 miles down the Garden State Parkway will land you in this delightful Jersey Shore town. You can spend the day lounging on the clean beaches (surfing is popular at the Cove and travelers flock to Sunset Beach for – you guessed it – its magnificent sunsets) or meandering through the National Historic Landmark District to see the grand, colorful Victorian homes (Emlen Physick Estate is a can't-miss). Other must-do activities include shopping at the many boutiques lining Washington Street Mall and getting spooked on a ghost tour.

best international trips from nyc

About 180 miles northeast of NYC, Providence, Rhode Island, is a slightly farther trip, but it can be reached by car, bus or train. This city offers a walkable downtown and a mix of historic and cultural attractions, including the Lippitt House Museum and the breathtaking WaterFire art installation, which consists of more than 80 bonfires set along Providence's three rivers. Keep in mind that WaterFire lightings are offered on select weekends seasonally. You could also spend a full day exploring the RISD Museum, but set aside time to admire the Colonial homes along Benefit Street before dining on Italian cuisine in Federal Hill.

This seaport village at the mouth of the Mystic River has been around since the 17th century. Today, it's home to two of Connecticut's most-visited sights: The Mystic Seaport Museum and the Mystic Aquarium. Take your time browsing the exhibits at these must-see attractions, then head to the Colonial-style Olde Mistick Village for some souvenir shopping. Meanwhile, those who want to take advantage of Mystic's prime waterfront location can kayak, paddleboard or sail along the scenic Mystic River. After a day of sightseeing, head to Mystic Pizza, the restaurant that inspired the 1988 movie starring Julia Roberts, before driving the 135 miles back to NYC.

best international trips from nyc

Sitting about 60 miles east of the heart of New York City, this barrier island is an ideal summertime retreat. Known for its welcoming atmosphere and rich LGBTQ history, Fire Island was a safe haven for gay travelers long before New York's Stonewall Riots of 1969. You can easily spend the day lounging along the beach at Robert Moses State Park or Fire Island National Seashore; the latter features the unique Sunken Forest, a rare maritime holly forest set behind rolling dunes. Once the sun sets, head to Ocean Beach or Cherry Grove to experience the island's thriving nightlife, which includes numerous drag venues.

best international trips from nyc

The famous Atlantic City boardwalk is only about 130 miles south of NYC, meaning it’s possible to enjoy a day at the beach without having to spend the night. If you do want to make a weekend out of it, though, you’ll have plenty of hotels to choose from, as well as restaurants, spas and tax-free shopping. But this New Jersey locale's greatest asset is without a doubt its many casinos – test your luck at a slot machine or show off your bluffing skills at the poker table.

North Fork, New York

Long Island’s northeastern peninsula, known as the North Fork, fits the bill for a weekend trip if you like tranquil seaside villages and laid-back itineraries. About 80 miles east of Manhattan and located directly north of the illustrious Hamptons, this quiet refuge is characterized by its wineries, beaches and friendly atmosphere. Not only is this short jaunt from the city an excellent place for a couples trip in New York state , but families will also find a plethora of exciting activities here as well.

To get here, catch the Long Island Rail Road commuter train from Penn Station to Greenport. When you arrive, make a beeline for the beach — Orient Beach State Park occupies a prime section of real estate along Gardiners Bay and is a perfect place for kayaking, swimming and sunbathing. Meanwhile, wine aficionados can spend the afternoon at Macari Vineyards or Sparkling Pointe Vineyards and Winery while families hit up the Splish Splash water park. At the end of the day, unwind at the lovely Harborfront Inn at Greenport.

The Poconos, Pennsylvania

This stunning mountain range in northeastern Pennsylvania (about 100 miles northwest of New York City) has appealed to travelers for generations. Perfect for both families and couples, the Poconos offer everything from whitewater rafting tours to fascinating museums to manicured golf courses. If the kids are in tow, let them burn off their excess energy at a water park . Meanwhile, thrill-seekers will be right at home at one of the region’s adventure parks, like Skytop Lodge or Gorilla Grove Treetop Adventures, which feature aerial obstacle courses and tubing.

Nature lovers will enjoy ample hiking and horseback riding opportunities. Plus, with several romantic restaurants and resorts , the Poconos area has distinguished itself as a premier honeymoon destination for lovebirds. Book your stay at The Lodge at Woodloch for a wellness-centered vacation complete with yoga and art classes, mindfulness experiences, and an adults-only spa.

Beacon, New York

Located in New York’s Hudson Valley, around 65 miles north of Manhattan, Beacon has transformed in the past two decades from a sleepy industrial town to a thriving arts community, making it the getaway of choice for relaxation-seeking city dwellers. Here, visitors can spend weekends (or a day trip) perusing vintage shops and flea markets, kayaking along the Hudson River, and exploring Beacon’s scenic hiking trails.

The first stop on your itinerary should be Dia Beacon, a renowned contemporary art museum housed in a former Nabisco box-printing factory. As one of the largest contemporary art galleries in the country, Dia’s robust collection of work spans from the 1960s to the present. From here, take a stroll down Main Street. Lined with doughnut shops, cafes and art galleries, Beacon’s main drag features hidden gems such as Hudson Beach Glass and the Towne Crier Cafe, a popular restaurant and live music venue. While there is plenty to do and see in Beacon, you can’t leave without touring the ruins of Bannerman Castle. Situated on Pollepel Island and reachable by boat from late April to October, this Scottish-style castle was once a storage site for surplus military equipment and ammunition.

Not only is this quiet refuge less than two hours by car from Manhattan, but travelers can easily hop on the train to reach this destination as well: Take the Metro-North Railroad from New York City to Beacon for less than $50 round trip. There are also plenty of accommodation options to choose from, ranging from cozy bed-and-breakfasts to unique digs like The Roundhouse, an abandoned factory complex that’s been transformed into a stylish boutique hotel.

Kingston, New York

Known as the first capital of New York, Kingston draws visitors with its historic charm, independent boutiques and quality restaurants. It’s located about 90 miles north of New York City and is home to three historic districts — including the Uptown Stockade District. Each of these neighborhoods are picture-perfect for strolling, shopping and gallery-hopping. Connect with Kingston’s creative spirit by perusing local art at places like the Art Society of Kingston, which hosts art exhibitions as well as concerts, dance, theater and more. Book lovers won’t want to miss Rough Draft Bar & Books, an independent bookstore that sells beer and wine in addition to coffee and pastries.

While Kingston is most often associated with its artistic reputation, this city on the Hudson River also offers notable access to nature. Experience the beauty of the river with a walk along the Kingston Point Rail Trail or go cycling on the smooth trails on the Hudson River Brickyard Trail. From hiking to cycling to kayaking on the river, outdoor adventure options are plentiful here. Kingston strikes a desirable balance between the offerings of a small city — such as local breweries, a variety of restaurants and an art scene — with a location that makes it easy to soak up the great outdoors.

Fire Island, New York

This secluded barrier island off the southern shore of Long Island is about 65 miles east of Manhattan and a popular getaway for New Yorkers — for good reason. Travelers will find an unspoiled island free of high-rise buildings and the vexing sounds of traffic, all within a few hours of the city. In fact, Fire Island is a car-free environment, making it the ideal choice for city dwellers in need of a short weekend escape. You can enjoy activities like sailing, biking, clamming and birding. Just keep in mind that Memorial Day to Labor Day is considered the busy season, so schedule your vacation outside of these dates if you want to avoid crowds.

Because you can’t drive onto the island, the best way to get here is by taking the Long Island Rail Road to Sayville, Patchogue or Bayshore. These destinations have marinas that offer ferry service to and from Fire Island for a fee. When it comes to lodging, Fire Island’s options are mostly small inns and hotels, but they fill up quickly, so book in advance to ensure you’ll have accommodations. If you’d rather rough it, campgrounds are available within the Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness, at Smith Point County Park and at Watch Hill. Keep in mind, backcountry camping permits and daily campsite fees (typically starting at $25 per day) may be required for select areas.

The Hamptons, New York

Arriving in the Hamptons, you’ll likely find it easy to see why this seaside destination on eastern Long Island’s South Fork has established such a name for itself. White sand beaches , untouched nature preserves and plenty of bars serving up frozen cocktails are just a few of the alluring images that may come to mind when you imagine an escape to the Hamptons. Luckily for New Yorkers, this little slice of heaven sits less than 100 miles east of Manhattan, making it easily accessible for weekend getaways and day trips .

Lay down your towel on East Hampton’s Main Beach or Southampton’s Coopers Beach, then cast a fishing line from the shore of Montauk Point State Park. For a dose of culture, check out the Hamptons’ illustrious art scene: The Parrish Art Museum and the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center (open seasonally) are two of the area’s most prominent museums. When it’s time to turn in for the night, save some coin by choosing a hotel in nearby Riverhead or by camping in a local park.

The Catskills, New York

For nature lovers, this mountain range in southeastern New York is the perfect place to reconnect with the great outdoors. Home of the famous 1969 Woodstock music festival, the Catskills have been inspiring travelers for decades. Spend the weekend hiking the region’s popular trails — like the Kaaterskill Falls trail, which features the tallest waterfall in New York state — or get out on Alder Lake in a kayak. In winter, head here to see Hunter Mountain blanketed in snow and take advantage of top-notch skiing and tubing opportunities.

In addition to outdoor activities such as hiking, fly-fishing, biking and zip lining, the Catskills are a haven for artists. Follow the Hudson River School Art Trail to witness firsthand the vistas that inspired artists like Thomas Cole. Meanwhile, music lovers and history buffs won’t want to miss a visit to The Museum at Bethel Woods, which showcases artifacts and stories from Woodstock. While nature is a main draw here, towns like Woodstock and Catskill are worth a visit in their own right — check out unique shops, independently owned restaurants, bookstores and more. Before calling it a night at one of the region’s fabulous hotels or resorts , stop by a microbrewery for a flight.

Cape May, New Jersey

Those looking for a relaxing weekend should consider Cape May, a top romantic getaway destination in New Jersey . Located roughly 160 miles south of New York City, this enchanting East Coast town is beloved for its beautiful beaches, striking Victorian homes and laid-back atmosphere. After soaking up some rays at the beach (the Cove Beach is a traveler favorite), hit up the retailers at Washington Street Mall. Filled with small boutiques, ice cream shops and bookstores, this outdoor mall spans three blocks and is perfect for easygoing strolls.

Other can’t-miss activities in Cape May include climbing the Cape May Lighthouse, watching the sun go down at Sunset Beach, sailing on a sightseeing cruise and taking a guided tour of the Emlen Physick Estate — Cape May’s only Victorian-era house museum. Cape May offers a plethora of lodging options for weekend trips ranging from quaint B&Bs to hotels set in ornate Victorian mansions. Book a room in historic Congress Hall or The Southern Mansion for charming guest rooms and convenient amenities.

Mystic, Connecticut

The quintessential New England town of Mystic is situated around 130 miles northeast of New York City and considered one of the top things to do in Connecticut . This seaside village has everything you’d want from a weekend getaway: museums, galleries, delicious eateries and historic landmarks. Head to Williams Beach Park for a quiet day by the water, then stroll through Mystic’s historic downtown. Colonial-era sea captain’s homes line the streets here, and there are countless places to dine and shop.

Families will also love the Mystic Aquarium — one of the best aquariums in the U.S. — for its educational exhibits and interactive habitats. Meanwhile, the Mystic Seaport Museum is a maritime museum that offers several activities for kids, including hands-on exhibits and a zoo garden. Just don’t leave without snapping a photo of the iconic Mystic River Bascule Bridge, a 1922 drawbridge that connects the Groton and Stonington sides of Mystic. When you’re ready to retire for the evening, The Inn at Mystic receives great reviews for its location and water views.

Hudson, New York

When New Yorkers dream about hopping aboard the train and escaping the city to somewhere scenic with lots of character, Hudson often tops the list. Named after the river’s explorer, Henry Hudson, this small riverside city is located about 120 miles north of New York City but feels in many ways like Manhattan’s opposite.

The hustle and bustle is replaced with a more peaceful pace, on display at the cafes, farm-to-table restaurants and antique shops (including an Antique Warehouse with many dealers under one roof). Hudson is known for its walkable center and preserved architecture. Expect to find unique shops stocking everything from vinyl records to fresh baked goods to vintage clothing, instead of national chains.

After shopping up an appetite, it’s time to eat — and Hudson offers exceptional eating. Surrounded by the farms of the Hudson Valley, chefs in Hudson begin with quality ingredients that become treats like ice cream or baked goods and vegetable-forward fare. After relaxing over a meal at Kitty’s, choose between catching a movie with a cocktail at Story Screen Cinema or sampling local beers at a brewery like Union Street Brewing Co. Complete a weekend in Hudson with a stroll across the Rip Van Winkle Bridge along the Hudson River Skywalk before settling in for the night at one of city’s famed boutique hotels.

The Berkshires, Massachusetts

This rural region in western Massachusetts sits about 150 miles north of Manhattan and has all the makings of a fairytale getaway with plenty of things to do . Picturesque mountain ranges, winding roads and idyllic towns are synonymous with the Berkshires, making this destination the perfect place to escape the hubbub of New York City. Bring your partner along to enjoy a romantic weekend filled with antique shopping, museum tours and scenic car rides through the region’s lush countryside.

For breathtaking mountain panoramas, strap on your hiking boots and head to the summit of Mount Greylock, the highest point in Massachusetts. Meanwhile, culture hounds won’t want to miss a chance to tour the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art and The Clark Art Institute. In summer, catch a dance performance at the prestigious Jacob’s Pillow or listen to live music on the lawn of Tanglewood, an extravagant music venue that’s the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Accommodations in the Berkshires run the gamut from B&Bs to luxurious hotels and resorts. Many past travelers say Canyon Ranch Lenox , while pricey, is worth the splurge for its wellness-focused amenities and indulgent spa treatments.

Shelter Island, New York

Only accessible by ferry, this hidden oasis between New York’s North Fork and South Fork is perfect for a quick weekend escape from the city. You won’t find rowdy nightlife or luxurious accommodations here, but that only adds to its appeal. In fact, nearly a third of the island is made up of the Mashomack Preserve, a protected habitat with 12 miles of coastline and more than 2,000 acres of tidal creeks, freshwater marshes, fields and woodlands. The preserve is also a major hub for bird-watching: More than 200 species of birds call this area home, although it is specifically known for its large population of nesting osprey.

Elsewhere on the island, visitors can lounge on Wades Beach, a family-friendly stretch of sand featuring lifeguards and a comfort station, or enjoy water sports at Shell Beach. Shelter Island is a premier spot for kayaking, and the seasonally open Kayak Shelter Island offers single and double kayaks, along with paddleboard rentals. While the island has golf courses, boutique shopping and courts for petanque (a French game similar to bocce ball), perhaps the best thing to do here is nothing at all.

To get here, start by taking the Long Island Rail Road commuter train to Greenport, then board the North Ferry to Shelter Island. Alternatively, you can drive to Sag Harbor, then load your car onto the South Ferry. For lodging, Shelter Island offers a handful of small hotels, vacation rentals and B&Bs.

Newport, Rhode Island

If sandy toes and lobster rolls are calling your name, look no further than Newport, Rhode Island — one of the best spots for a weekend getaway in New England . This port town, located on the southern tip of Aquidneck Island about 180 miles northeast of New York, is famous for its miles of pristine shoreline, upscale boutiques and ornate Gilded Age mansions, which you can ogle on a trolley tour. It is also lauded as one of the world’s premier sailing destinations.

Gain your sea legs aboard a boat tour of Newport Harbor, or get your steps in on part of the Cliff Walk, a scenic 3.5-mile pathway that runs along Newport’s eastern shore. Then, engage in some well-deserved retail therapy along Thames Street, which is lined with a plethora of shops and restaurants. Of course, you can’t leave without touring The Breakers, Newport’s iconic Renaissance-style “summer cottage,” which is one of the top things to do in Rhode Island . When it’s time to bed down, check out one of Newport’s many lavish accommodations, such as The Vanderbilt and The Chanler at Cliff Walk .

Lake George, New York

Situated in New York’s Adirondacks region, roughly 200 miles north of Manhattan, Lake George is filled with fun activities the whole family can enjoy. Sink your toes in the sand at Lake George Beach, also known as the Million Dollar Beach: a kid-friendly stretch of sand complete with lifeguards and concession stands. Then, work up a sweat hiking Prospect Mountain and Shelving Rock Falls. For more of a thrill, check out Lake George’s parasailing, whitewater rafting and zip lining courses.

If you’re simply looking to kick your feet up on your weekend getaway, rent a pontoon boat and spend the day floating around Lake George. The region is also home to restaurants, the Adirondack Winery outpost in Lake George and several museums, including The Hyde Collection and the Fort William Henry Museum. After an eventful day of lake activities, head back to your plush accommodations at The Sagamore Resort to unwind.

Niagara Falls, New York and Ontario

If you’re willing to hop on a short flight (or take a bus tour), you can enjoy a weekend marveling at one of the most beautiful and impressive natural wonders of the world. Niagara Falls is less than a two-hour flight from New York City — and, while this powerful waterfall is sure to take your breath away, it isn’t the only reason to plan a weekend getaway to the area. With beautiful botanical gardens, wineries and casinos, this famous tourist town has everything you need for a fun-filled weekend away. Take advantage of both the American and Canadian sides of the Niagara River by bringing your passport with you.

For a classic Niagara Falls experience, don a poncho and board the Maid of the Mist boat tour. This famed attraction is one of the best ways to see the falls up close, but it’s impossible to guarantee you won’t get wet. If you’d rather view the falls from a drier and less crowded vantage point, head to the observation deck of the Skylon Tower . Thrill-seekers can also experience the waterfall on the Journey Behind the Falls , which takes participants directly behind the thunderous falls, or on an exhilarating jet boat tour.

When it’s time to turn in, visitors on the American side of the falls can book their stay at Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino , while Ontario-based guests spend a cozy night in the well-appointed Harbour House Hotel .

Top road trips from NYC

1.  cold spring, ny.

Cold Spring, NY

54 miles from NYC

For New Yorkers, it’s hard to imagine the city’s western boundary, the Hudson, in the context of a small town. But Cold Spring is just that—a riverside hamlet with an almost gratuitously all-American sensibility. (It’s where Don McLean wrote the song “American Pie,” so yeah, it’s fairly patriotic.) There are also antique shops, a trolley and a country store to boot.

Necessary pit stop: RiverMarket Bar and Kitchen  in Tarrytown serves locally sourced food right on the river.

2.  Alexandria, VA

Alexandria, VA

238 miles from NYC

Cobblestone streets, sidewalk cafés and a generally dreamy attitude endow this small city with a romantic feel. Walk along the pastel-colored buildings on King Street, the main drag in Alexandria’s Old Town, for unique shopping at (mostly) non-franchise boutiques. Then treat your eyes to Torpedo Factory Art Center  which houses 82 artist studios and six galleries, all of which are open to the public.

Necessary pit stop: The Coffee Station  in Garnet Valley, PA serves up diner-food delights in an unpretentious setting: There’s often live music and a mug full of Trivial Pursuit cards on each table.

3.  Finger Lakes, NYC

Finger Lakes, NYC

256 miles from NYC

The Finger Lakes region can be turned into an even longer trip. Chock full of scenery, hiking, wineries and historic attractions along its 11 beautiful lakes. Visit the Heart & Hands Wine Company and hike in Watkins Glen State Park  (or Robert Treman State Park  to escape the crowds of the latter).

Necessary pit stop: In the tiny town of Roscoe you'll find Roscoe Diner . The vintage joint is known for thick slabs of french toast.

4.  Burlington, VT

  • Transport & Travel

Burlington, VT

300 miles from NYC

The lakeside city of Burlington is that classic New England destination you might expect. From the shining waters of Lake Champlain to City Hall Park, the city is quite beautiful. Mixed among the walkable streets with quaint homes are cafes and bars you’ll want to linger at, a mix of indy and luxury shops, and a flourishing craft beer scene. As the state’s most populated city, and home to the University of Vermont and Champlain College, Burlington prides itself on being a city for all. Shops, bars and venues proudly display Black Lives Matter, Pride flags and other welcoming signs from their windows and its residents are just as hospitable.

Necessary Pit Stop: Stop in Saratoga Springs where you can grab lunch at Olde Bryan Inn , established 1773, for some deliciously hearty American dishes.

5.  Lake Placid, NY

Lake Placid, NY

290 miles from NYC

The aptly named Lake Placid is a small village that provides a relaxing retreat from urban life. Its big, conifer-covered mountains surround the 122-acre Mirror Lake, around which the town is centered. The high altitudes keep the climate here mild, so you can stay chill even in the dog days of summer and even learn about sports history at the Olympics Center.

Necessary pit stop: Remind yourself that New York City isn’t the state capital (though it arguably should be). Stop at the actual New York State Capital in Albany.

6.  Berkshires, MA

Berkshires, MA

152 miles from NYC

Dense, lush forests and rural New England charm define this bucolic spot in Western Massachusetts. You should picnic beside Berry Lake (and maybe see black bears eating blackberries) and drink niche brews and exotic whiskies on a comfy wooden stool in Moe’s Tavern  in Lee, MA.

Necessary pit stop: Take a stop off the Taconic State Parkway and picnic at Barton Orchards  in Poughquag, NY where you can pluck a wide variety of fruits and veggies, including apples, tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants and pumpkins.

7.  Philadelphia, PA

Philadelphia, PA

97 miles from NYC

Philly is the place to be to see street art, from wall-crawling mosaic art exhibits to an all-star showcase for the electric-colored graffiti by local artists. Rittenhouse Square is a well-ornamented park and a nice break from the bustle, and you shouldn’t be too cool to go to Independence Hall, where America began. (It’s where the Declaration of Independence was signed and where the Liberty Bell lives.)

Necessary pit stop: Bracket your contempt for Jersey and hit up the Colonial Diner  in Brunswick, NJ to try the fluffy-AF French toast.

8.  Narragansett, RI

Narragansett, RI

168 miles from NYC

Nestled between the eastern bank of the Pettaquamscutt River and the mouth of Narragansett Bay, this shore-side locale boasts three pristine beaches: Scarborough State Beach, Narragansett Town Beach and Roger Wheeler State Beach. If the blank coastline begins to bore you, check out the Point Judith Lighthouse which dates back to 1816.

Necessary pit stop: Stop in Connecticut and munch succulent seafood at Liv’s Oyster Bar  in Saybrook, CT.

9.  Cape Cod, MA

Cape Cod, MA

246 miles from NYC

The lure of this sea-worn town is well known—it’s where gentle green dunes meet a rocky shore, the beach is worn by waves and the sunsets look tangerine over a royal-blue Atlantic. If you like to fish, there’s nowhere better: The waters are home to bluefin tuna, striped bass, flounder and fluke and are patrolled by salty curmudgeons wearing yellow slickers and steering wooden skiffs.

Necessary pit stop: Hop off the Interstate and cruise around Providence. Drive past its Venetian-style canals towards College Hill. Stop by Aleppo Sweets , an amazing Syrian bakery and cafe.

10.  Cape May, NJ

Cape May, NJ

158 miles from NYC

This idyllic resort town on the Jersey Shore is known for grand Victorian houses, historic spots like the Congress Hall hotel and the lovely paved promenade along the beaches. Enjoy a drink at the waterfront bar The Rusty Nail then go for fresh seafood at The Lobster House.

Necessary pit stop: Might as well stop in Atlantic City. You can grab a bite to eat at Tony's Baltimore Grill (yes, get the spaghetti pizza).

11.  Stowe, VT

Stowe, VT

334 miles from NYC

This sleepy getaway is ripe for outdoor adventure—rich thickets of sugar maple, beech and yellow birch trees surround the town center, which, as is typical of Vermont, is dominated by a towering white church steeple. To get a sense of the surroundings, take a canoe or kayak out on Lake Elmore, the Green River Reservoir or up the Lamoille and Winooski rivers. And every summer, the Stowe Theater Guild   puts together shows to entertain you in the evenings.

Necessary pit stop: If you need a rest stop, drive west to Brattleboro. Whetstone Station serves unique, small batch craft beers alongside inspired food-truck-style favorites.

12.  Saratoga Springs, NY

Saratoga Springs, NY

190 miles from NYC

This town gets its name from an abundance of mineral springs (there are 18), which have attracted spa-seekers since the 19th century. Almost all the springs are naturally carbonated, so we recommend sipping some complimentary Saratoga Sparkling Rosé when bathing in them. The city’s also famous for the Saratoga Race Course  where you can place legal bets.

Necessary pit stop: Stop in Woodstock and hike up Overlook Mountainin Woodstock for a view of the Hudson River Valley that is seriously worth the two-and-a-half-mile walk.

13.  Bar Harbor, ME

Bar Harbor, ME

487 miles from NYC

Granite cliffs meet the Atlantic Ocean and Colonial Revival cottages line the quiet streets in this city. Walk along the Shore Path, which hugs the chocolate-box coastline and runs from the Town Pier toward Mountain Desert Island. Then sample something sweet at Mount Desert Island Ice Cream — just look for a bench painted a Victorian-y shade of purple.

Necessary pit stop: Stop in New Hampshire and drink suds at the top-notch Portsmouth Brewery .

14.  Niagara Falls, NY

Niagara Falls, NY

408 miles from NYC

This tourist attraction and old-timey honeymooner fave is well worth a visit. The seven-hour trip is an exceptionally scenic one, so build in time for stops and hikes. There's a reason tourists flock to Niagara Falls State Park —thunderous falls, mist and plenty of rainbows are unforgettable.

Necessary pit stop:  As you drive through the Catskills, grab a stop on the patio at Yiasou Cafe , a cheerful spot serving a variety of traditional Greek & Mediterranean dishes.

Evan massey | aug 31, 2024.

The New York skyline as seen on Wednesday, May 24, 2023.

New York City is one of the premier tourist destinations in the United States. People flock to the city from all over the country to experience everything that it has to offer.

Whether you're visiting for the museums, night life, restaurants, or anything else, there is plenty for you to enjoy.

Keeping that in mind, let's dive in and take a look at four places you need to visit during your next trip to New York City.

Visit the Statue of Liberty

There are few places to visit in the United States with more historical value than the Statue of Liberty.

Getting tickets to visit the Statue of Liberty up close and personal are $25 for adults and $16 per child. Make sure to visit the crown of the statue. You'll climb up 162 stairs, but it will be worth it as you'll get amazing views of the city.

Enjoy A New York City Food Tour

One the best parts about a good vacation is the food you get to enjoy. New York City has plenty of diferent kinds of foods.

The best way to make sure that you don't miss out on some of the best places in New York is by taking a food tour. Here is a link to some of the better tours that are offered.

National September 11 Memorial & Museum

The tickets will cost you $33 for adults, $27 for college students, seniors, and youths aged 13 to 17, and $21 for kids ages seven through 12. Taking the time for this experience is well worth it.

Remembering the victims of September 11th and learning more about that day is a big moment in history. The museum spans 110,000 square feet and has real-time recordings, real artifacts, and interactive technology. It's an experience that will help your understanding of what happened and will make you happy that you spent the time to do so.

A Nice Stroll and Exploration of Central Park

Finally, no trip to New York City is complete without a visit to Central Park. There is a lot of beauty on display and tons of attractions within the park itself.

You can visit the park for many different things, including food, the zoo, and even a morning exercise. There are playgrounds for kids, beautiful fountains, amazing monuments and sculptures, and much more. It's a place that must be experienced.

13 Best Road Trips From NYC

How to escape the city without getting on a plane.

best international trips from nyc

One of our favorite parts of travel is visiting local, boutique hotels and independently owned businesses . Whether you're looking to escape the heat of an NYC summer, or just explore a nearby destination you've never seen before, these 13 road trips make for the perfect mini-break.

Here are the best road trips from New York City, from the most luxurious corners of New England to charming, up-and-coming Catskills enclaves.

1. Westerly, Rhode Island

A quaint coastal town overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Westerly is a two-and-a-half-hour Amtrak ride or a three-hour drive from NYC. Visitors can post up at Ocean House , a Relais & Châteaux property. On the grounds, guests get access to a private white-sand beach, the Mercedes-Benz Program (you can borrow and drive around town in the latest models at no charge), Ocean & Harvest Spa , and complimentary cooking classes at the Center for Wine & Culinary Arts .

2. Cape May, New Jersey

Cape May is one of the most idyllic towns on the Jersey Shore, as evidenced by attractions from from the historic Congress Hall Hotel — opened in 1816 — to the paved promenade along its beaches. Stop in for fresh seafood at The Lobster House, and grab a sunset cocktail by the fire pits at the waterfront hot spot, Rusty Nail .

3. Finger Lakes, New York

Less than a five-hour drive from NYC, the Finger Lakes region is comprised of 11 pristine lakes, excellent wineries, great hiking through scenic gorges, and historical attractions. For a luxurious home-away-from-home escape, stay on Cayuga Lake at The Inns of Aurora . Here, you can check into the lavishly decorated Zabriskie House and head down the street for a cooking demonstration at Aurora Cooks , followed by a cocktail at the hotel's 1833 Kitchen & Bar . Off the property, visit the nearby Heart & Hands Wine Company to taste their pinot noirs, or enjoy a peaceful day of hiking at Watkins Glen State Park.

4. Alexandria, Virginia

Nicholas Schmidt/Travel + Leisure

Venturing to Old Town Alexandria will help you feel a world away from the bustle of NYC. Architecture enthusiasts will love Old Town's 18th- and 19th-century facades, while the shopping-inclined traveler will enjoy patronizing the inviting local businesses. Right on the Potomac, Alexandria is one of our favorite southern U.S. cities — right up there with Savannah and Charleston — but it's only four hours from NYC by car.

5. Catskills, New York

Cooperstown is a four-hour drive from NYC through the scenic Catskill Mountains. Stay close to Otsego Lake at The Inn at Cooperstown ; built in 1874, the historic, award-winning hotel is home to 18 beautiful guest rooms. From Cooperstown, it's a short ride to the north end of the lake and Glimmerglass State Park , a perfect spot for out-of-town visitors to explore.

Meanwhile, the charming Catskills town of Roxbury is a quick, three-hour drive from NYC. Stay at The Roxbury at Stratton Falls , a lovely boutique hotel with eclectic decor. If you love to stargaze, book the astronomy-focused Galileo's Gate cottage with its own glass-ceiling observation deck.

6. Pocono Mountains, Pennsylvania

The Pocono Mountains are an easy getaway from New York City, just under two hours away. For those who want a full nature immersion, consider a stay at Cranberry Run Campground . It's surrounded by 65 acres of woodlands, and campers can hang out at the on-site outdoor pool or explore the nearby Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area for hiking, canoeing, kayaking, and rafting.

7. Lexington, Massachusetts

Situated approximately 15 miles from Boston in bucolic woodlands, Lexington is the perfect destination for American history buffs. Stay at the stunning 22-room Inn at Hastings Park , a Relais & Châteaux property that's centrally located to Walden Pond, Battle Green (where the first shots of the Revolutionary War were fired), the Hancock-Clarke House, and the Orchard House (where "Little Women" was set). You can reach this town in less than four hours from NYC.

8. Niagara Falls, New York

It'll take seven hours from NYC, but if you trek 400 miles north of the city, you'll make it to Niagara Falls, New York. The trip itself is exceptionally scenic, with plenty of opportunity for hiking or picnic lunches along the way. Once you arrive at Niagara Falls State Park , you'll be overwhelmed by the rainbows, mist, and thunderous roar generated by the American, Horseshoe, and Bridal Veil Falls.

9. Newport, Rhode Island

Only a four-hour drive from NYC, Newport is a must-visit for all East Coast road trippers. This summer, stay at The Vanderbilt for a taste of opulence. With 33 rooms located in the authentic former mansion of a real Vanderbilt, the property was recently renovated and offers unique experiences, like a wine tasting paired with a vinyl listening session on a vintage gramophone and tea leaf reading sessions with a professional psychic.

10. Haines Falls, New York

The Catskills are so nice that they made the list twice. With majestic waterfalls, unique towns, and beautiful scenery, the region offers incredible outdoor experiences. The hamlet of Haines Falls, in the Great Northern Catskills , is home to the highest cascading waterfall in New York state, Kaaterskill Falls . The trail, which is open year-round, is about a mile and a half round-trip. Road trippers should also head to Round Top to see Glen Falls, which doubles as a popular swimming hole during the warmer months.

11. The Berkshires, Massachusetts

Drive three hours from NYC, and you'll wind up in the stunning Berkshires in western Massachusetts. While visiting, grab iced coffees and croissants from Six Depot Roastery & Cafe and picnic along Shaker Mill Pond. For a quintessentially charming New England stay, check out The Old Inn on the Green .

12. North Fork, New York

Head out to the North Fork of Long Island, which has great dining and wineries, but is still quieter than the buzzing Hampton towns on the South Fork. On your way to the North Fork from NYC, stop off at Jerry & the Mermaid for lunch. Your first winery in North Fork should be Bedell Cellars . And when you're driving back to the city, if the season is right, take a detour to see the lavender fields at Lavender by the Bay .

13. Keene Valley, Adirondacks, New York

The Adirondacks are worth visiting in any season. Keene is well-situated in the highest peaks of the Adirondacks, offering great downhill and cross-country skiing in the winter, and hiking in the summer (we recommend taking the Giant Mountain trail at the base of Roaring Brook Falls). For a lovely bed-and-breakfast, check out the Keene Valley Lodge .

Nicole Kidman’s Sexy, Prickly Babygirl Is Utterly Thrilling

Image may contain Leisure Activities Person Sport Swimming Water Water Sports Pool Swimming Pool Face and Head

You have to hand it to Nicole Kidman: in recent months, she (along with The Idea of You ’s Anne Hathaway) has been spearheading the current renaissance of May-December relationship movies involving glamorous older women and dashing young men—and, in her case, doing double duty. First came Netflix’s A Family Affair with Zac Efron, and now there’s Babygirl , Halina Reijn’s sultry workplace thriller co-starring the always excellent Harris Dickinson, which just debuted at the Venice Film Festival . Both films are deeply and wonderfully unserious but, beyond that, it’s probably unfair to compare them. The first is disposable fluff, while the second is a mile-a-minute romp which thrills and unsettles in equal measure, and provides plenty to get your teeth into.

I would hesitate to call it a romance , though— Babygirl is about lust , pure and simple. It opens—and ends—with an orgasm, delivered with complete commitment and lack of self-consciousness by our leading lady, who is simply sensational here, in one of the meatiest parts she’s had in years. But, we quickly realize, she’s faking it. After her doting husband (Antonio Banderas) finishes, she rushes to the other room, opens her laptop, and watches some porn involving a girl with a baby voice calling a guy “daddy” before bringing herself to climax.

In a way, it makes sense. She is Romy Mathis, the high-powered CEO of a robotics company, forever glued to her phone, chairing meetings, and making crucial decisions, while also raising two young daughters and constantly reassuring her husband about his abilities as a theater director. So, it’s understandable that she might not always feel like taking charge in the bedroom, too—she wants to be taken .

Enter: Dickinson’s Samuel, one of the new interns at Romy’s company whom she spots outside the building. When a rabid dog runs towards her on the street, everyone steps back, but he steps forward. As he holds, strokes, and calms her, Romy looks on, intrigued. From the outset, he proves to be different from the rest of his cohort—a somewhat contradictory yet entirely believable and uniquely Gen Z combination of bullishness and acute social awareness. He asks difficult questions; he keeps interrupting her; he takes it upon himself to choose her as his company mentor and arrange meetings with her.

She, in turn, begins fantasizing about him. She watches him dance with girls his own age at the office Christmas party and, the morning after, finds his tie lying on the floor. She takes it to her office and stuffs it into her mouth, hungry for danger, transgression, and the rush that comes with knowing that, in one swift move, you could blow up your entire life.

It all comes to a head in their one-to-one, when Samuel offers Romy his assessment of her: “I think you like being told what to do.” She’s outraged and electrified, they kiss, and neither knows exactly where they stand. A game of cat and mouse ensues: Samuel sends Romy a glass of milk at a work drinks, she downs it, and when she picks up the check for the whole team, he whispers “Good girl” into her ear—the same phrase he used to soothe that agitated dog. He then invites her to a hotel room for their next “meeting.” She obliges, but when she begins a speech about how inappropriate their relationship has become, it almost sounds like foreplay–like the dialogue from the porn she consumes so ravenously.

What follows is as hot as it is hilariously confusing. Neither know exactly what to do or what they want; Romy attempts to leave but then comes back; they try things and, before you know it, she’s on all fours. After her orgasm, she clings to Samuel like a baby. It’s unclear who’s actually in charge—Romy tells Samuel that she doesn’t want to hurt him, and he insists that he has power over her. He only has to say the word, and she’d be fired.

And thus a torrid affair begins, further complicated by Samuel’s increasing interactions with Romy’s family, as well as his budding romance with another colleague, Romy’s ambitious assistant (Sophie Wilde). In one of the film’s funniest scenes, a jealous Romy warns her young protégé against the relationship, saying it could be perceived as an abuse of power. There’s also, of course, the constant, simmering threat of Samuel changing his mind, reporting Romy for real, and destroying her career—a notion which seems to both horrify and excite her.

I fear Kidman’s audacious turn—slippery, insatiable, reckless and then painfully vulnerable—might prove too much for the Academy, but it’s one that demands to be seen. Yes, she crouches down on the floor to drink milk from a saucer and performs a striptease for her 20-something subordinate, but she somehow does it all while also making Romy feel like a conflicted, flawed, flesh-and-blood woman when it could all so easily have been parodic.

Image may contain Antonio Banderas Nicole Kidman Lighting Head Person Photography Face Adult Portrait and Clothing

And she leaves absolutely nothing on the table. Much will (and should) be written about her utterly fearless sex scenes, but there are plenty of other sequences which leave her equally exposed: In one, Romy is shown getting botox, and in another, her teenage daughter (Esther McGregor) tells her she looks like a dead fish, pushing her own lips together in an exaggerated pout to mimic her. Later, we see Romy nervously scrutinizing her own reflection. There is certainly a sense of validation that she gets from being desired by Samuel, but to Reijn’s credit, her razor-sharp script resists spelling this out. Commendably, it also refrains from using a specific childhood trauma to explain away Romy’s proclivities. We learn that she was raised in a cult—and there are brief, disorientating flashbacks to that chaotic period—but that adds texture, rather than offering answers.

Dickinson is just as difficult to pin down. His domineering, self-assured Samuel is no victim, but as he gets to know Romy better, a strange and unexpected tenderness emerges, too. In one moment, he’s shown dancing in slow motion, his tattoos exposed and his innate swagger intoxicating; in another, he gently asks Romy to hold him. In one of the film’s final scenes, Banderas’s beleaguered husband laments that female masochism is a male fantasy. Samuel scoffs. “That’s a dated idea,” he counters, ever that indelible mix of brash and sensitive. He, Kidman, and Reijn deserve all the plaudits, as does Cristobal Tapia de Veer for his expertly tension-building score. (As I waited for the water bus after my screening, I heard someone humming it in front of me in the queue—always the highest compliment.)

Admittedly, Babygirl isn’t for everyone. It has divided critics and, even at the glittering premiere, as throngs cheered for the cast as the credits rolled, there were many others who slipped out, shaking their heads. Like all the other May-December films before it, it’s guaranteed to spark debate and inspire derision when it hits screens later this year—but, rest assured, it knows exactly what it’s doing. This is a thorny, unflinching declaration of raw female desire—and it is entirely shameless.

As anyone who has traveled with children is aware, your hotel needs are quite different than when you’re on, say, your honeymoon. Gone are the cute, boutique properties with paper-thin walls; say hello to hotels with bathrooms big enough to fit a travel crib. But traveling with babies or kids doesn’t mean being relegated to the most boring of chain properties; in fact, many of the  best New York City hotels  are also exceedingly family-friendly. And, as a city that’s eminently walkable and stacked with tons of activities that will enchant ages 2 to 82, it’s one of our favorite recommendations for family travel.

As to which hotel is best for you? It depends on your budget, style, and how many kids you're traveling with. Luckily, we’ve done the research and overnight stays to find the absolute top picks for a variety of families. Read on for 10 of the best New York City hotels for families.

The Ritz-Carlton New York Arrow

Best for : Kids amenities Neighborhood: NoMad

The entire Ritz-Carlton chain has long been known as a sure bet for families, thanks in part to its thoughtful  Ritz Kids  program. The kid-friendly features at the hotel’s NoMad outpost include everything from a separate kids’ check-in screen to a robust kids’ menu at the on-site restaurant Zaytinya to welcome amenities like an activity book and stuffed animal. And with a location steps from Madison Square Park, it’s easy to tire them out on the massive playground before turning in for the night. Moreover, the hotel has 31 suites that can be combined with other rooms to accommodate large families. Make sure to ask for kid-sized robes, as well; they’re adorable.

The Plaza Arrow

Best for : Central Park access Neighborhood: Midtown

As the home of the beloved character of Eloise, is it any wonder that this famed New York hotel is one of the most welcoming properties for families? Fans of the fictional tot should look into booking the  Eloise One Bedroom King , a speciality room decked out with hot pink, striped wallpaper, bean bag chairs, and tons of Eloise-themed welcome goodies. You can also book the cheekily named Nanny Suite next door for even more space. The Palm Court, in the hotel’s grand lobby, is also one of the most famous spots in the city to sit down for afternoon tea; of course, there’s an Eloise offering here as well. The Children’s Eloise tea includes kid-friendly sandwiches like Nutella and banana and creative pastries like lime whoopie pies and strawberry lemonade cupcakes.

Address :  768 5th Ave, New York, NY 10019

Freehand New York

Freehand New York Arrow

Best for : Affordable rooms Neighborhood: Flatiron

One of our favorite family-friendly hotels in New York is also one of the most affordable: Freehand is easy on the wallet and the eyes, thanks to its chic interior design courtesy of powerhouse firm  Roman and Williams . Aside from a super convenient location in Flatiron (the subway is only a block away, and Madison Square Park is two), we love this hotel’s unique “high occupancy” rooms, which can fit three or four people in a combination of regular and bunk beds. The “quad,” with four twin beds in two bunks, is a dream for any kids on holiday. And when everyone needs a bit of a breather from a day of sightseeing, head to the rooftop between 4 to 6 p.m.; those hours are reserved for all-age parties, and there is a full selection of mocktails for the kids.

Pendry Manhattan West Arrow

Best for : Babies Neighborhood: Hudson Yards

In the last few years, the far west stretch of Manhattan that encompasses Hudson Yards and Manhattan West has become quite the hotbed of activity for restaurants, shopping, and the arts. Of course, chic hotels were bound to spring up, and the Pendry is situated right in the thick of it all. Not only is this hotel within walking (read: stroller) distance to loads of some excellent new restaurants , the High Line , and the Vessel, but the rooms themselves are pin-drop quiet—ideal if you’re traveling with very young tots who might have an early bedtime. The hotel can provide cribs, custom Pendry coloring books, and—our favorite—rolls out a mini taxi cab filled with stuffed animals when children arrive. Pro tip: Guests looking for connected rooms should book via the  Well Connected  program, which provides 15 percent off and a $150 daily hotel credit per stay.

Address :  438 W 33rd St, New York, NY 10001

The Peninsula New York

The Peninsula New York Arrow

Best for : Tweens Neighborhood: Midtown

The Peninsula is one of the more famous luxury properties in New York, but it lands on this list for  Camp Peninsula , one of the city’s most robust kids’ programs. Available to add to any reservation, the package includes welcome s’mores, a kid-sized tent, robe, and slippers, and—the most fun feature—a scavenger hunt with kids gallivanting through the whole hotel. We also love the hotel’s unique Peninsula Time program, which allows check in as early as 6 a.m. and check out as late as 10 p.m., all at no extra charge, a huge relief when your travel plans are at odd hours.

The Greenwich Hotel Arrow

Best for : Kids’ menus Neighborhood: Tribeca

This downtown hotel with uptown service levels has long been a top pick for those looking for a stylish and pampering stay (on-site  Shibui Spa  is a favorite of visitors and locals alike). And kids are no exception: The hotel will usually request details on their smallest guests before arrival to ensure their stay is both cozy and unique. The hotel likes to mix it up, but examples of amenities include baked goods customized for each kid from the on-site restaurant  Locanda Verde ; and teddy bears, puzzles, or coloring books waiting in-room upon arrival. Kids are also allowed in the pool from 7 to 10 a.m., an excellent way to burn off some energy in the early morning hours. The hotel has a variety of one- and two-bedroom suites; we especially love the  Two-Bedroom Fireplace Corner Suite  for its huge size and extra-deep soaking tub.

Address :  377 Greenwich St, New York, NY 10013

Rosewood Carlyle Hotel

The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel Arrow

Best for : Primary school-aged kids Neighborhood: Upper East Side

One of New York City’s toniest addresses is also, surprisingly, one of the most kid-friendly. The Carlyle has long been known as a haunt for the glitterati, but their discreet hospitality also extends to the littlest travelers. Kids are treated like royalty here, with doormen gifting them chic Carlyle keychains, to a full dessert tasting waiting for them in the room (wait until you see the chocolate taxi cab!). And with 92 suites in the portfolio, there are plenty of spaces big enough for families. True story: My daughter actually got lost on her way to her bedroom; our suite was so spacious. Perhaps the most thoughtful touch here was at breakfast when the team surprised her with a beribboned box of treats for an afternoon snack.

1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge Arrow

Best for : Teens Neighborhood: Brooklyn Heights

While we may not recommend Brooklyn Heights as the best headquarters for your first trip to New York City, this lush enclave near the Brooklyn Bridge is an ideal location for those who have a few visits under their belts. Teens, especially, will love the rooftop pool at this eco-friendly hotel; and don’t worry, parents, there is a lifeguard on duty. Bigger kids and teens will also appreciate that some rooms, like the Bridge Suite, can be connected to adjoining rooms to give everyone more privacy. The hotel also runs family-friendly programming for all ages, including their Bubbles & Bubbles event, which includes a music class for children and Champagne for guests of legal drinking age (get it?). This neighborhood is also one of the best for kids, with everything from Jane’s Carousel to the gorgeous Brooklyn Bridge Park, to Time Out Market New York, all only a few minutes’ walk from the hotel.

Four Seasons Hotel New York Downtown Arrow

Best for : Toddlers Neighborhood: Tribeca

While Midtown may have the greatest concentration of family-friendly hotels, don’t sleep on Tribeca. One of the city’s most welcoming hotels for kids is the towering Four Seasons, whose rooms are stocked with kid-sized robes and can be equipped with a cot and childproofed before arrival. The littlest guests here are also treated to a bevy of welcome amenities, ranging from personalized, New York–themed cookies, to a bespoke map of the city, to colorful picture books. We recommend the  Oculus Suite  for families, which is a true one-bedroom with two bathrooms plus a dining area with room for four. And make sure to bring your swimsuits; the indoor pool here is one of the nicest in the city,  and  it opens at 6 a.m., in case you’re dealing with some jet-lagged littles.

View from Park Hyatt New York

Park Hyatt New York Arrow

Best for : Swimming pool access Neighborhood: Midtown

With a prime location on Billionaire’s Row, the Park Hyatt is within walking distance of many of the city’s top family-friendly attractions, from Central Park to Rockefeller Center to the Museum of Modern Art. But we also don’t blame you if you have a hard time peeling yourself away from the hotel—the property has recently introduced new family suites, which are kitted out with robes in sizes for the whole family, in-room tents complete with a stuffed animal (my daughter opted to sleep here instead of her bed), and Johnson & Johnson toiletries for the youngest travelers. Other on-site amenities include an indoor saltwater pool on the 25th floor, mocktails for kids at the restaurant The Living Room, and a concierge who can arrange for expert childcare if parents want a night on the town.
