On Location: Rachael Leigh Cook Shares Her Vietnam Itinerary From ‘A Tourist’s Guide to Love’

A Tourist's Guide to Love. Le Thien as Ba Noi Scott Ly as Sinh and Rachael Leigh Cook as Amanda in A Tourist's Guide to...

Lifting the curtain on some of the season's most exciting new releases.

As the sun set in Hoi An one evening last spring,  Rachael Leigh Cook gazed out on the Vietnamese scene on the Thu Bon River. Her mom sat beside her beaming ear-to-ear as someone played Peter Gabriel in the distance. “I remember thinking, ‘I don’t want anything else in the world—I just want to be exactly here, where I am,'” the 43-year-old actress says. “That was a transcendent travel moment for me.” It’s exactly that kind of travel magic that’s celebrated in her latest film,  A Tourist’s Guide to Love , a Netflix original, premiering April 21, about travel executive Amanda Riley who is sent undercover to experience a small-group tour company that her American corporation is considering buying. Arriving in Vietnam with a check-list of sights to see, she soon discovers that the most meaningful moments are found veering off the itinerary.

In A Tourist's Guide to Love , Rachael Leigh Cook's Amanda is a lovelorn travel executive who goes undercover to learn more about Vietnam's tourism industry.

Filmed all around the Asian nation—from its major hubs Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi to the beach town of Da Nang and the northeastern province of Ha Giang —Cook was stunned by how unique every corner of the country is. “It seemed too good to be true,” she says. “Then I got there and realized it’s just that beautiful, and people will get to discover that if they watch our movie.”

This movie is such a celebration of travel—how has traveling been a part of your life? I spent my whole childhood in Minnesota . My dad worked in the school system, so we could travel a little bit in the summer, but we never went especially far. My parents are extremely prudent financially and we would stay at youth hostels. I remember we went to the Seattle's Northwest Folklife Festival and saw the fish market . As someone who didn't travel much as a kid, the opportunities to travel that have come from my work have shown me some of the most eye-opening and unexpected moments of my life. And this movie is the pinnacle of that.

The movie starts in Ho Chi Minh City and ends in Hanoi—how do the cities compare? Ho Chi Minh City is bustling. It is hard-working, fast-paced, and kind of crazy. There are incredible rooftops there. There's glamour. Anything that you could want to find, you can find in Ho Chi Minh City. Hanoi is completely different. The energy there is very different. Everyone walks at a slower pace. There's just less sound in the air. The aesthetic is different—and it’s absolutely beautiful.

Scott Ly plays Sinh, an expat tour guide with whom Amanda falls in love.

The first spark of romance comes during a scene in Hoi An—how would you describe it? When people see images of Vietnam that have those streets full of lanterns and borderline Disney magic about them, that's Hoi An. It's stunningly beautiful—I think that that might have been my favorite stop. It’s conveniently very near Da Nang, which is named the most livable city in Vietnam. It's just a gorgeous beach town. I'm not gonna pretend it wasn't hot. Of course it is. It's Vietnam. But a must-see for sure.

The group then ventures off the plan and heads to My Son Sanctuary . What was it like to film there? You can feel the stillness and the history there. Its beauty is transcendent and very special. It feels pretty weird to have lighting equipment on an ancient temple—that juxtaposition is not lost on me. I felt just very grateful that they let us film there. I hope that people want to go check it out after seeing our movie.

The movie purposely skips the Golden Hand Bridge , but did you go there? I totally went to the Golden Hand Bridge. We even say in the movie that it’s awesome, but it's just not steeped in as much history. My mom came out for about 10 days with my kids—they couldn't miss more school, but they came during their spring break—and they absolutely loved it. They've created a theme park after a gondola ride. It takes like 22 minutes to get to the top of this mountain. And then up there is something that I would equate to the scale of maybe like a quarter the size of Disneyland and there are theme park rides up there. There is a giant—I don't want to call it a food hall because it's beautiful—but all these restaurants, it is really worth seeing. The engineering blows my mind. What a gift that we got to experience that together.

This Caribbean Island Is Back From the Brink&-and Ready To Share Its Treasures With the World

The film is set in both bustling Ho Chi Minh City and sleepy Hanoi, giving a glimpse at life in various Vietnamese cities.

Filming the homestay scene in Ha Giang must have been quite a contrast? Ha Giang is mountainous and very beautiful and it's near the border to China. It was probably our most rustic place. It's very much a hard-working community that's seen a lot over the years. It's one of those places I never would have been motivated to come to, but I'm so glad that I did. It’s very user-friendly and the people they're incredibly welcoming. They're excited that you're there. They want to know how you got there. I really just hope they liked the movie—I hope we do them justice.

What were your favorite food experiences in Vietnam?   The food that I ate way too much of that I have not been able to find as good since I've returned back here is bánh xèo. That's my favorite thing. It's like a very thin egg pancake with fresh vegetables quickly cooked in it, and it gets wrapped up like a pancake. So it's sort of like a burrito without the burrito. And oh my gosh, the sauces with it. It's delicious. I did try the durian. I was impressed by the taste. It's in the family of sweetness of a mango, almost. I found the consistency [was] what I couldn't really get behind. And obviously this smell—it is as advertised.

A Tourist's Guide to Love. Rachael Leigh Cook as Amanda and Le Thien as Ba Noi in A Tourist's Guide to Love. Cr....

Cook notes the difference between a tourist—someone who wants to escape their life—and a traveler, who does so in order to experience theirs.

Amanda is a very over-prepared traveler. How would you categorize yourself? My packing style is not impressive. If I have a week to pack, it'll take a week. If I have three hours to pack, it'll take three hours. If I have 30 minutes, it'll take 30 minutes. The results are all the same. It's never better or worse. My travel style is generally unprepared and heavy on recommendations. I love knowing where people say to go, especially if it's friends or friends of friends, I find that the most fun and reliable way to sort of like wade through a city. I also like to stay where it makes things central, so I can walk as much as possible. I'm a little bit daunted by taking underground systems where I can get lost because I have no sense of direction.

What’s been your favorite interaction with a stranger while traveling? I made friends with this woman when I was working [on 2014’s  Red Sky ] in Russia. She spoke no English and I speak no Russian, but we could just tell that we liked each other and that we had a similar vibe and humor, and we still found ways to laugh together. I remember her very fondly—she's such a special soul.

A Tourist's Guide to Love. Rachael Leigh Cook as Amanda in A Tourist's Guide to Love. Cr. Sasidis SasisakulpornNetflix ©...

Cook's own travel style is different from the overprepared Amanda—the actress relies largely on recommendations.

What’s a place you’d always go back to? A place I've been twice and I hope I go many times is Moorea , near Bora Bora [and] Tahiti . I think it was Marlon Brando who lived out in Bora Bora because he knew that his heart rate would drop by like 20 percent the second he touched down there, and I could feel it in myself too. It's just so relaxing and centering.

What do you think it is about travel that makes us let go? In the movie, we say a tourist is someone who wants to escape their lives, and a traveler is someone who wants to experience theirs. But I think that those sentiments go hand-in-hand. Sometimes you gotta jump out of the boat that you're in to be able to experience a new thing, and that's okay. Getting out of your comfort zone is what creates and inspires lasting memories. You don't know how long life is going to be, and you should spend your life on experience.

A Tourist's Guide to Love Takes Viewers to Incredible Filming Locations in Vietnam

The Netflix rom-com is giving us major wanderlust.

Anyone aching for a fresh rom-com is in luck: The new movie A Tourist’s Guide to Love has officially hit Netflix . It follows travel executive Amanda (played by She’s All That ’s Rachael Leigh Cook) who goes undercover in Vietnam to learn about the tourism industry and recover from a breakup. While there, she meets a tour guide named Sinh (Scott Ly). They find adventure and romance in markets, streets, temples, and ancient villages that actually were the set for some of the film ’ s most beautiful scenes. We spoke with its Ho Chi Minh City–based production designer, An Do, to learn behind-the-scenes details about these incredible filming locations . Warning: Reading on may cause severe wanderlust.

Ho Chi Minh City

Formerly known as Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city in Vietnam. It’s where Amanda starts her trip. Along with the tour group, she browses Ben Thanh Market , one of the city's many lively markets where visitors can grab anything from fresh produce to garments and handcrafted items.

In Hoi An, an ancient town on Vietnam’s central coast, the tour group goes sightseeing, visiting spots like Quon Cong Temple . Hoi An turned out to be Do’s favorite place to film. “The town’s character is so unique,” the production designer says. “My team and I designed and created a total of four main locations within Hoi An.”

Do’s team set out to elevate the existing value of each location. The tailor shop was one such spot, created at a Yaly Couture shop. “Knowing their newest collection was not on current display, I took the privilege of turning their vintage courtyard into a brand-new showcase area with the most unique pieces of Yaly’s latest designs,” Do says. “And with the appropriate addition of the peacocks and some jays, this center area was transformed into an authentic colorful royal garden for our scene.”

The dreamy lantern-lit street that Amanda and Sinh wander down is another creation. While Hoi An is known for lanterns and small lantern-covered streets, none as elaborate as the one in the film existed. So, Do's ordered more than a thousand lanterns in various shapes and sizes. At more than half a mile long, it was constructed over four hot summer days—and it still stands. “We were very honored when Hoi An People’s Committee and Department of Culture asked production to leave this set intact for future tourists to enjoy,” Do says.

When Amanda and Sinh partake in the water lantern festival, they’re on the bank of the Thu Bon River . That experience “is a treat to even a Vietnamese person because the actual festival only happens once a year, and it is rare for a tourist to conveniently be in Hoi An during such time,” Do explains.

Filming also took place at the Hoi An Hotel , which functioned like a studio since it was closed at the time due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We were going to name it Da Nguyet (Moon Watching) Hotel, but since the flower vines, after months of pandemic, had beautifully covered the sign of the hotel, we decided to let nature be the voice.”

The coastal city of Da Nang was tapped as a filming location for its sandy beaches. About an hour away from Da Nang and Hoi An, filming also took place at My Son Sanctuary . The Unesco World Heritage site encompasses the remains of tower temples and “was the religious and political capital of the Champa Kingdom for most of its existence,” according to Unesco . Surrounded by mountains, the area is set in a stunning geological basin.

Sinh’s family home is located in Hà Giang, on the banks of the Lô River in northeastern Vietnam. “Hà Giang, and Hà Giang city in particular, was an incredible opportunity to show Vietnam’s cultural ethnic heritage and roots,” Do says of the area. It took the cast and crew six hours to get there from Hanoi. “Its rustic, countryside beauty with fields and terraces of rice really lent the off-the-beaten-track value to the film.”

The pure beauty and cultural value aren’t the only aspects that made filming in the location extra special. “It could very well be the last time that that old village is filmed, as Hà Giang is developing at such a rapid speed, meaning a traveler would need to drive eight, even 10 hours to see the likes of that kind of village again,” Do says.

the hanoi opera house was built by the french colonial

Vietnam’s capital of Hanoi served as the backdrop for the film’s final scenes. Both the interior and exterior for the water puppet show were shot at Thang Long National Water Puppet Theatre , which is located in the heart of the city and near one of Vietnam’s most famous lakes called Ho Hoan Kiem. “The traditional art of performing water puppet shows dates back as far as the 11th century from the people whose life were nurtured by the water of the Red River,” Do says. “For us, it was a mission to bring this art form into our film.”

The heartwarming moment between Amanda and Sinh at the end was filmed at the iconic roundabout in front of the Hanoi Opera House , which was built by the French from 1901 through 1911 and was inspired by classical Greek architecture and Paris’s Palais Garnier.

In Hanoi, filming also took place at the Tirant Hotel . Located on Gia Ngu Street in the Old Quarter, the hotel has operated since 2011. Surrounded by beloved restaurants and entertainment venues, it’s ideal for both business and leisure travelers.

of Netflix’s A Tourist’s Guide to Love: Where Was it Filmed?

Helmed by Steven K. Tsuchida, Netflix’s ‘A Tourist’s Guide to Love’ is a romantic comedy movie starring Rachael Leigh Cook as Amanda, a travel executive who agrees to travel to Vietnam for work, specifically to gain insight into the country’s tourism sector, after an unexpected end to her long-term romantic relationship. Welcomed by a charming and free-spirited Vietnamese tour guide named Sinh, Amanda arrives right in time for the Vietnamese Lunar New Year celebration. As the two embark on a scenic journey across the country, they begin developing feelings for each other and, eventually, fall in love.

However, when Amanda’s ex pays a surprise visit to her in Vietnam, a love triangle ensues as she must choose between the two men in her life. Besides Cook, the romantic drama movie features talented cast members, including Scott Ly , Missi Pyle, Ben Feldman, Nondumiso Tembe, and Andrew Barth Feldman. The voyage of self-discovery that Amanda embarks along with Sinh gives us a glimpse into some of the picturesque sites in Vietnam, be it the city life or the countryside. Thus, many of you might wonder about the actual filming sites of ‘A Tourist’s Guide to Love.’ In that case, allow us to fill you in on all the details!

A Tourist’s Guide to Love Filming Locations

‘A Tourist’s Guide to Love’ was filmed in Vietnam, specifically in Hanoi, Quang Nam, Ho Chi Minh City, Hà Giang, and Da Nang. As per reports, the principal photography for the rom-com film commenced in April 2022 and wrapped up around mid-June of the same year. Interestingly, it is the first US movie to be entirely shot on location in Vietnam. Now, let’s follow Amanda and Sinh on their life-changing journey and get a detailed account of all the specific places that appear in the Netflix movie!

Hanoi, Vietnam

The capital of Vietnam, Hanoi, served as one of the prominent production locations for ‘A Tourist’s Guide to Love’ as the filming unit utilized numerous locales and streets for shooting the film. With various exterior shots of the city incorporated into the romantic movie, you are likely to notice a few iconic landmarks and lakes, including Turtle Tower, Hanoi Opera House, Imperial Citadel of Thăng Long, West Lake, Trúc Bạch Lake, and Bảy Mẫu Lake.

Quảng Nam, Vietnam

The production team of ‘A Tourist’s Guide to Love’ set up camp in the Vietnamese province of Quảng Nam, especially the city of Hội An. Previously known as Fai-Fo or Faifoo, Hội An has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, turning it into a major tourist destination as portrayed in the movie. Moreover, a few pivotal sequences were lensed in Mỹ Sơn, a cluster of abandoned Hindu temples in Quảng Nam province.

Other Locations in Vietnam

For shooting purposes, the cast and crew members of ‘A Tourist’s Guide to Love’ traveled to various other locations across Vietnam. For instance, the locales of the cities of Ho Chi Minh City, Hà Giang, and Da Nang feature quite heavily in the drama movie . In April 2023, the director Steven K. Tsuchida sat down with Netflix Tudum to talk about their experience of shooting the film on location in Vietnam. He said, “To be able to film in so many locations in Vietnam was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The excitement of (Ho Chi Minh City) was captivating, while the traditions of Hanoi were enriching. The diversity and culture of Da Nang, Hội An, and Mỹ Sơn were breathtaking. And living and filming in Hà Giang was spiritually moving.”

In another interview in April 2023 with Distractify , Tsuchida talked some more about filming in different parts of Vietnam. He stated, “Physically, it was like 90-degree weather all the time and 100% humidity, so it’s really hot and sweaty. With that said, working in Vietnam was an incredible experience. Because the Vietnamese people, the crew, government, the location, whatever, they were super enthused to have us there.” Moreover, many popular city streets were reportedly shut down during the production process, making the entire experience all the more smoother for the actors.

'A Tourist's Guide to Love' Is a Love Letter to Vietnam — Inside the Beautiful Filming Locations (EXCLUSIVE)

Gabrielle Bernardini - Author

Published April 20 2023, 4:50 p.m. ET

Following an emotional breakup with her longtime boyfriend, a travel executive ( Rachael Leigh Cook ) decides to throw herself into a new assignment and goes undercover as a tourist in Vietnam in the new Netflix rom-com, A Tourist's Guide to Love . But, the food and the beautiful sights aren't the only things Amanda Riley finds interesting on her foreign work-cation .

Amanda falls for her Vietnamese expat guide, Sinh Thach (Scott Ly), after he reroutes the usual tour and takes Amanda and the rest of the group "off the beaten path" so they can discover everything the beautiful Asian country has to offer.

In an exclusive interview with Distractify , director Steven K. Tsuchida spoke about the breathtaking filming locations, and how Vietnam becomes a central character in the movie.

'A Tourist's Guide to Love' filming locations — director on how Vietnam is a central "character" in the movie.

While the rom-com storyline may sound familiar, the unique lens of the movie taking place in Vietnam adds another layer to this journey and this particular romance, which is what makes this movie special, the director explained to us.

"To be able to showcase this sort of universal story told through this, I think, really sort of beautiful and unique place that is Vietnam [...] it's an opportunity to really show people like number one, the incredible cultural, and visual, and experiential nature of Vietnam that is just quite spectacular from a natural standpoint," he said. "And on the flip side, to really show the warmth, generosity, and then the variety that both the people and the culture sort of exude."

A Tourist's Guide to Love was filmed on location in Vietnam and gives viewers a glimpse at life in the major cities such as Ho Chi Minh City, as well as showcases the country's rural areas and villages.

Though the director emphasizes the beauty of Vietnam, shooting in a foreign country did come with a few challenges, specifically, the weather.

"Physically it was like 90-degree weather all the time and 100% humidity, so it's really hot and sweaty," he said. "With that said, working in Vietnam was an incredible experience," the director added. "Because the Vietnamese people, the crew, government, the location, whatever, they were super enthused to have us there."

The film's director told us that the people of Vietnam were "incredibly welcoming" to the cast and crew. During filming, popular city streets were shut down to accommodate the actors as they shot scenes.

Though the movie stars Rachael Leigh Cook and Scott Ly, Tsuchida feels that Vietnam is "a character [in and of] itself."

He continued, "I think one of the things that I really love about making movies like this and using a lot of the local talent is, I start watching the Western talent interact with, like, the local talent and [...] you actually realize as far away, as foreign as Vietnam is compared to Los Angeles, how [many] more similarities that we all have as human beings than differences."

You can stream A Tourist's Guide to Love on Netflix on April 21.

Where Was A Tourist's Guide To Love Actually Filmed?

Amanda Riley smiling

Netflix's new romantic comedy "A Tourist's Guide to Love" is a movie that just might have viewers checking their vacation calendars and bank accounts to fantasize about when they might escape to the film's colorfully exotic locations. Brimming with fast-paced, dazzling urban excitement juxtaposed with dreamily evocative rural vistas, the film is a visual feast as well as a whirlwind emotional journey.

The narrative centers on travel exec Amanda Riley, played by "She's All That" star Rachael Leigh Cook , who bails from a long-term relationship and heads off to Vietnam to heal her heart and explore the Southeast Asian nation's touristy side. But no sooner does she arrive in the country than she meets a fresh potential love interest Sinh (Scott Ly), the attractive and available local guy assigned to show her around.

As viewers likely won't be surprised to discover, the movie was filmed entirely on location in Vietnam. But the truth is, as Eirene Tran Donohue explained to Netflix Tudum , "There are almost no American movies that I can think of set in Vietnam that aren't about the trauma of war." That being the case, she said, she wanted to utilize on-location filming in Vietnam because, "It was really important to me to tell a story about life there now, one that was full of joy and love and celebration."

A Tourist's Guide to Love is also a love letter to Vietnam itself

Sinh and Amanda embracing

As the film's title telegraphs, "A Tourist's Guide to Love" is primarily concerned with its lead character's romantic journey. But the film also serves up a wide-ranging exploration of Vietnam, from its bustling urban centers to its mist-shrouded countryside.

"As someone who had never been to Vietnam before this production, my fervent hope is that it's worth the watch just to get a sense of this incredible country," Rachael Leigh Cook told Netflix Tudum. The actress then went on to enumerate a mini-travel guide to the film's numerous shooting locations, saying, "We filmed in Ho Chi Minh City [formerly Saigon], Hoi An, Da Nang, Ha Giang and Hanoi." Cook then explained that the filming sites pictured in "A Tourist's Guide to Love" help to portray Vietnam's many and varied landscapes and cityscapes, all of which are different from each other in a number of ways.

Due to all of these factors, the movie acts as a cinematic tour of Vietnam. "Our goal, that I feel like our director Steven Tsuchida accomplished, is that you feel like you had a seat on the bus with us," Cook said.

A Tourist’s Guide to Love is the first Netflix’s film shot in Vietnam, telling about an unintentional love of Amanda with the adventurous and exciting Sinh. Especially, the film showcases the beauty of local landscapes along with that of Vietnamese people and culture through six main filming locations: Ha Noi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Hoi An, My Son and Ha Giang

After the premiere on Netflix, A Tourist’s Guide to Love soon to claim its position as the most-watched movies globally on Netflix.

Netflix Film Poster

A typical rom-com that anyone might be looking for on a lazy Saturday, however, A Tourist’s Guide to Love certainly celebrates the country, showcasing multiple cities and landscapes as Amanda (played by She’s All That’s Rachael Leigh Cook) and her new friends discover the wonders of Vietnam. They find adventure and romance in markets, streets, temples, and ancient villages that actually were the set for some of the film’s most beautiful scenes.

As someone who had never been to Vietnam before this production, my fervent hope is that it’s worth the watch just to get a sense of this incredible country… We filmed in Ho Chi Minh City, Hoi An, Da Nang, Ha Giang and Hanoi, all of which are wildly different places in look, history and energy…

Cook tells Tudum of Netflix.

Eager to explore Vietnam by yourself but can’t get away right now? Make your way through the most memorable Vietnam locations in A Tourist’s Guide to Love below. No passport needed of course.

Ho Chi Minh City

A bustling metropolis, a hub of commerce and culture. Since the city is well known for its lively streets, impressive skyscrapers and vibrant nightlife, travellers can find many interesting things and places to experience. The city offers an eclectic mix of colonial architecture, historic landmarks, and cultural attractions. It’s also home to the city’s famous Ben Thanh Market. Other places to be considered are: The Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon - a stunning example of French colonial architecture and features many stained glass windows and intricate carvings; The Saigon Central Post Office - a must-visit for architecture lovers, with many rooms to explore and ornate details to marvel at; Cu Chi Tunnels - an impressive network of underground tunnels during the resistance war of Vietnamese people. Not far from the centre city, the Mekong Delta provides a wonderful cruising tour for sprawling views of paddy fields and houseboats creating signature floating markets.

You should experience unmissable activities such as riding the iconic basket boats, experiencing farm life at Tra Que Vegetable Village, checking out the Lune Centre, getting an education at the Hoi An Silk Village.

A coastal city in Central Vietnam known for its sandy beaches. With a huge arc of gently curving sand at the coastline, Da Nang boasts beach areas to suit a range of sunseekers. And what else? My Son Sanctuary, located not far from the City of Bridges. The sanctuary is an architectural complex of many Champa temples with extremely unique architecture, influenced by Hinduism. On the walls of the temples and towers are sophisticated, elaborate and meticulous carvings with many sophisticated details.

Linh Ung Pagoda Da Nang

The north-eastern mountainous province of Ha Giang, home to 22 ethnic groups, also well-known as the place where “flowers grow in rocks”. Ha Giang in the spring will be coated in the scent of flowers, especially cherry blossoms, plum flowers, mustard flowers and pear flowers in March. Spring is also the season of festivals. In Ha Giang in October-December, visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy the subtle fragrance, witness with their own eyes a purple colour of the buckwheat flowers covering all the small villages.

The adventure finally comes to an end in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, embracing and nurturing the well blended of tradition, ancient and contemplative elements. Ha Noi is a home of many historical relics such as the Temple of Literature - Vietnam’s first university and educated hundreds of well-known scholars and mandarins. Ha Noi is also a place to have fun and explore with many art shows such as water puppet dances, The Quintessence of Tonkin,... a shopping hub and a true place to wander and taste street food.

Viewers of A Tourist’s Guide to Love can find the film a slapstick comedy, fish-out-of-water gags, copious shopping montages, a secret to be revealed and a last-minute dash to say “I love you”, but this time they’re set against the backdrop of present-day Vietnam, which gives this artwork an unusual feeling of novelty. “A Tourist’s Guide to Love” is essentially a travelogue with a plot, and, somehow, a motivation for you to pack your suitcase and come to Vietnam, to explore, relax and play and all above, to live freely and fully in Vietnam.

We hope to see you in Vietnam, in person, really soon!

Pho-nomenal Adventures: Must-Visit Locations In Vietnam From A Tourist’s Guide To Love

As seen in A Tourist’s Guide To Love, there is more to Vietnam than Ho Chin Minh City. We explore some other locations featured in the film. (Image courtesy of Netflix.)

Before we begin, I should probably warn you that this listicle may cause some serious wanderlust . Now that that’s been said, let’s dive straight in. If you often ‘ Netflix and chill ‘, you’ll know of the streaming giant’s latest rom-com release, A Tourist’s Guide To Love . Starring Rachel Leigh Cook (most famously known from She’s All That) as Amanda, she goes to Vietnam and meets a tour guide named Sinh.

Getting over an unexpected breakup, Amanda finds adventure and, of course, romance with Sinh in Vietnam . Bustling markets , busy streets, ancient temples , and charming villages take centre stage in the scenes of this movie, a side of Vietnam that we rarely see on the big screen. A Tourist’s Guide to Love is not only an enjoyable, light-hearted movie but also ignites curiosity in Vietnam. Let’s get to know some of the filming locations, and then you can add them to your travel list.

1. Ho Chi Minh City

1. Ho Chi Minh City

Formerly known as Saigon, Ho Chi Minh is where Amanda begins her adventure. This bustling city is also where you can find the famous Binh Than Market. It’s here where Amanda learns how to negotiate for the silk scarf. As Sinh mentions in the movie, markets like this are the focus of community life, and you can find just about anything — from local artwork to silk scarves. There’s even fresh seafood available.

Other things to do in Ho Chi Minh City include visiting the War Remnants Museum, sampling the abundance of street food on Vinh Khanh Street, checking out Ho Chi Minh City Museum, climbing through the Chu Chi tunnels, and so on. When visiting this city, don’t forget to explore the coffee culture , as the Vietnamese are renowned for their love of coffee.

2. Hoi An

This historic city on Vietnam’s central coast is known for its well-preserved Ancient Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The lantern streets make it one of the country’s most loved travel destinations; as seen in the movie, this old town truly lights up at night.

Besides wandering down the old streets, you should also check out the Quan Cong Temple, Japanese Bridge, and Hoi An night market, to name a few. If you have time to spare, sample some banh mi in this region and also sign up for a cooking class !

3. Da Nang

In the movie, Amanda visits My Son Sanctuary, another UNESCO World Heritage site located an hour away from the Da Nang area, but there’s more to this part of Vietnam. Known for its sandy beaches, this coastal part of the country is quickly becoming a favourite spot for travellers. There are various holy sites to visit, the Marble Mountains is another attraction that must be witnessed, and there’s even Ba Na Hills SunWorld — a theme park , resort, and sightseeing destination all rolled into one.

a tourist guide to love filming locations

The Golden Bridge is another should-do while in Vietnam, but it’s often packed with tourists. If you’re not a fan of bustling crowds, skip it and enjoy Da Nang’s beaches instead.

4. Ha Giang

4. Ha Giang

After enjoying the sight of Sinh’s impressive abs in Da Nang, the audience is transported to the charming village of Ha Giang. This quaint village is the birthplace of both Sinh and Anh, and it sits on the picturesque banks of the Lo River in northeastern Vietnam.

While rapidly developing, this part of the country still serves as the perfect place to appreciate Vietnam’s rustic countryside beauty. If you really want to experience Vietnam’s many beauties, take a day trek from Ha Giang City to Khuoi My village, and be in awe of the valleys and rolling hills.

For stunning views of rice terraces, take a trip to Hoang Su Phi, and remember to explore Ha Giang’s markets too, where shoppers can indulge in some retail therapy. While all Vietnamese food is worth sampling, one must not miss out on a steaming bowl of thang co, which happens to be a signature dish of the Northern Highlands. This flavourful dish can be found just about everywhere in Ha Giang.

5. Hanoi

Amanda’s Vietnamese adventure culminates in Hanoi , the capital of Vietnam. This amazing city has beautiful old buildings and a diverse culture, giving visitors many exciting things to discover and enjoy. From French-influenced architecture and food to picturesque lakes to fancy rooftop bars and endless temples — there’s something to do for every kind of traveller.

If you’re a big fan of street food, Hanoi’s game is strong. Tantalise your tastebuds with banh mi , bun cha (fish noodles), pho , bún riêu (crab noodles), lau (Vietnamese hot pot), and more, and experience a culinary adventure like never before! Visit Vietnam’s oldest church, St Joseph’s Cathedral, for true architectural magnificence.

A Tourist’s Guide to Love

a tourist guide to love filming locations

“A Tourist’s Guide to Love” is as harmless as its blandly forgettable title would suggest. It’s not quite a Movie to Fold Laundry To, because the scenery is quite lovely, so you’ll actually want to pay attention. But it is a pleasant escape if you’re seeking lazy Saturday afternoon viewing.

Rachael Leigh Cook brings her perky rom-com presence to this made-for-Netflix movie, which checks all the boxes you’d expect from such a slick and glossy example of the genre. Slapstick comedy, fish-out-of-water gags, wacky supporting characters, copious shopping montages, a love triangle, a secret to be revealed and a last-minute dash to say “I love you”—they’re all there, but this time they’re set against the backdrop of present-day Vietnam, which gives “A Tourist’s Guide to Love” an unusual feeling of novelty.

Director Steven K. Tsuchida , a TV veteran, was also behind 2021’s “ Resort to Love ,” another Netflix romantic comedy set in a picturesque vacation destination. This is pure formula, but the leads have such a sweet chemistry with each other, and the locations are so enticing, that you may as well just surrender.

Cook stars as Amanda Riley, an uptight, Los Angeles-based travel agent living a safe and predictable existence with her boring accountant boyfriend, John ( Ben Feldman ). Amanda’s boss (and apparently only friend), Mona ( Missi Pyle ), insists John is going to propose to her. Instead, he tells her he’s taking a job in Ohio and putting their relationship on hold. (Julia Shiplett makes the most of a brief supporting role as Amanda’s unimpressed manicurist.)

Stunned, Amanda agrees to Mona’s suggestion that she travel to Vietnam undercover to scope out a local tour company with the possibility of her firm buying it. This is also her chance to eat-pray-love her way out of heartache. Plus, she’ll be there for the annual Tet celebration, which just happens to be all about renewal. Would any of this actually happen in real life? No. Would a spoiled hotel heiress actually hit her head on a tree at a ski resort, suffer amnesia and fall for the hunky, widowed dad who owns a charming bed and breakfast? Probably not. We don’t watch these kinds of movies for realism.

And so Type-A Amanda becomes part of a tour group led by the handsome and soulful Sinh ( Scott Ly ) and his effervescent cousin, Anh (Quinn Truc Tran). Screenwriter Eirene Tran Donohue tries somewhat to flesh out the motley assemblage of fellow travelers, but she saddles them with awkward small talk, and no one is terribly interesting. The inordinately prepared Amanda insists on adhering to the itinerary because she wants to get the most out of her covert mission, but the easygoing Sinh takes a more spontaneous approach which—spoiler!—Amanda eventually learns to enjoy. Sinh also happens to have just the right profound thing to say for every occasion, which speaks to the flux in which Amanda finds herself. (Example: “A tourist wants to escape life. A traveler wants to experience it.”) Again, these are familiar types, but Cook’s likability softens her character’s pushy, impatient traits, and the charismatic Ly’s understated delivery makes Sinh’s platitudes less cheesy than they might sound.

Working with cinematographer Jon Keng and featuring plenty of shimmering aerial shots, Tsuchida makes every stop along the way seem vibrant and appealing, from the bustling streets of Ho Chi Minh City to the beaches of Da Nang to the verdant hills of Sinh’s home village. “Doing nothing feels very weird,” Amanda admits while lounging under an umbrella by the sea, and truer words were never spoken.

“A Tourist’s Guide to Love” is essentially a travelogue with a plot, but you might actually find yourself caring about whether these two attractive-but-extremely-different people end up falling for each other in the end.

On Netflix now.

‘A Tourist’s Guide to Love’

For the most part, the romantic comedy “A Tourist’s Guide to Love” follows the predictable pattern of a Hallmark-style “workaholic slows down and finds love” story. Rachael Leigh Cook plays Amanda Riley, an over-scheduled Los Angeles travel agent who suffers an unexpected setback in a long-term relationship. She recovers by taking a business trip to Vietnam, where she’s captivated both by the place and by her guide: the kind-hearted optimist Sinh Thach (Scott Ly). Though the movie’s leads are undeniably charming, director Steven K. Tsuchida and screenwriter Eirene Tran Donohue don’t give them much to do that hasn’t been done many times before.

What does distinguish their film is its setting. Amanda has been sent to Vietnam by her boss (Missi Pyle) as a kind of secret shopper, to experience the Tết celebrations and to look into the possibility of acquiring Sinh’s family-owned tour company. Hiding her true intentions, Amanda asks Sinh to take her tour group to all the country’s most popular spots; but gradually she gets more into his groove, following the flow of any given day.

Because this is a rom-com, eventually Amanda may have to risk her budding relationship with Sinh by telling him the truth; and there’s always the possibility that her noncommittal boyfriend John (Ben Feldman) will reenter the picture. But until those narrative gears start grinding again, “A Tourist’s Guide to Love” is a genuinely pleasant trip through Vietnam’s stunning-looking cities and countryside as two nice folks meander along, falling for each other.

‘A Tourist’s Guide to Love.’ TV-PG, for mild themes. 1 hour, 36 minutes. Available on Netflix

A woman wearing a flower crown in a costume shop points a finger gun.

In their indie drama “Cherry,” writer-director Sophie Galibert and co-writers Arthur Cohen and Anne-Claire Jaulin make the daring choice to have their title character be a total mess. Alex Trewhitt plays Cherry, a young woman who works (sort of) as a magician at a costume shop and spends her free time either participating in a roller-skate dance troupe (when she remembers to show up) or hanging out with her boyfriend, Nick (Dan Schultz), a DJ with no interest in settling down. As the film begins, Cherry learns she’s pregnant. She has no health insurance. She has no real adult relationships to lean on. And because she’s been afraid to take a pregnancy test, she’s so far along that she has essentially 24 hours to decide what to do next.

In other words, Cherry is hardly the most sympathetic character to put at the center of a story about reproductive rights. (She even admits to never using birth control.) But that’s part of the point of this slight-but-engaging slice-of-life. These kinds of stories are rarely perfect. The easiest thing for Cherry to do would be to ask her friends and family for advice; but that’s not who she is. She’s a mixed-up youngster who half-wonders if maybe having a baby would help her mature. Ultimately, this film is less about her final decision than about how having these choices helps her figure out who she wants to be.

‘Cherry.’ Not rated. 1 hour, 16 minutes. Available on VOD

‘The Best Man’

The proliferation of “Die Hard” rip-offs in the ’80s and ’90s often lacked what made the original special: the quirky personalities of the heroes and villains. So the thriller “The Best Man” — which is essentially “Die Hard” at a destination wedding — deserves some credit for at least taking the time to let the audience get to know its characters. Brendan Fehr plays Bradley, who reconnects with his old special ops buddies Cal ( Luke Wilson ) and Anders (Dolph Lundgren) for Cal’s wedding at a ritzy New Mexico resort. Writer-director Shane Dax Taylor and co-writers C. Alec Rossel and Daniel Zirilli spend about a third of the film watching these guys reminisce, drink and flirt with the ladies in the wedding party.

Then mercenaries with a personal grudge invade the hotel and Bradley finds himself separated from the group, working in the shadows with the bride’s sister Hailey (Scout Taylor-Compton) to outsmart the gunmen. It’s here where “The Best Man” stumbles. The cat-and-mouse action is uninspired and slackly paced; and any pizazz that Wilson, Lundgren and Fehr bring gets lost once they stop talking and start shooting. The location is nice; and to be fair, this movie never promises more than it delivers. It’s an unambitious “Die Hard” clone with likable actors, aimed at audiences looking for something adequate.

‘The Best Man.’ R, for violence, language and brief drug use. 1 hour, 33 minutes. Available on VOD

Also on VOD

“Gringa” is a shaggy underdog sports story about a cranky soccer prodigy named Marge (Jess Gabor) who leaves home after her mom dies and tracks down her absentee dad (Steve Zahn), a laid-back soccer coach in Mexico. The film packs two movies’ worth of melodrama into one; but the backgrounds are lovely, Zahn and Gabor play well off each other, and the movie builds to an exciting climactic match. Available on VOD; also playing theatrically, Cinelounge Sunset, Hollywood

Available now on DVD and Blu-ray

“Small Axe” collects five vibrant, passionate Steve McQueen films (including what may be his masterpiece, “Lovers Rock”) that cover the tumultuous period from the ’60s to the ’80s in the lives of Londoners with roots in the West Indies. The Criterion Blu-ray set includes a related documentary co-directed by McQueen and James Rogan, as well as multiple interviews with McQueen, covering different aspects of this remarkable 2020 project. 31 Iconic Filming Locations Around the World You Can Actually Visit

From Walter White's house to the beach from Lost , here's where to find some of Hollywood's most iconic filming locations.

a tourist guide to love filming locations

If you could step into the world of your favorite film or television series, would you? Most of us wouldn't hesitate to answer "yes." And while there is, of course, no way to magically transport yourself into the movie of your choice, you can visit the real-life locations where several iconic flicks and series were filmed.

From entire towns to tiny, hidden gems off the beaten path, Hollywood tends to go for unique and extravagant locales when it ventures off the backlots (think ancient Middle Eastern temples, otherworldly terrain, and the glamorous streets of Manhattan ). But that's not the rule. For example, our list includes an unassuming New Mexico gas station and a set of city steps in the Bronx.

So, whether you're dreaming of living out your Lord of the Rings fantasies or you're just dying to get a photo in front of Walter White's Breaking Bad house, the list below will tell you exactly how and where to make that happen. And who knows? Maybe a few of these iconic filming locations are even close enough to inspire a summer road trip!

Hobbiton in Matamata, Waikato, New Zealand — The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Trilogies

Alisha McDarris/Travel + Leisure

The cozy town of Hobbiton, home to Frodo and Bilbo Baggins, may have been created specifically for The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films , but the storybook-like set remains. If you ever find yourself in the New Zealand town of Matamata, you can book one of several guided tours which takes fans to filming spots like the Green Dragon Inn, Hobbit Holes, and the Mill.

Al Khazneh in Petra, Jordan — "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade"

If you're a fan of the Indiana Jones film series (and let's be honest, who isn't?), you may know this wonder of a structure as the mystical temple of the Holy Grail, which is carved into the side of a canyon. In reality, the Al Khazneh temple exists as an ancient mausoleum in Petra, Jordan . Visitors aren't able to venture inside the temple, but they're not missing much — in contrast to the film's intricate chambers and booby traps, the inside of Al Khazneh is simply a small, stone room.

Mokule’ia Beach in Oahu, Hawaii — Lost

Dreaming of visiting the crash site of Oceanic flight 815 ? Head to Oahu's Mokule'ia Beach , which was used as not only the crash site, but also the location of the survivors' camp in the first season of the mega-popular series. Though the series changed filming locations in the later seasons, fans of the show often stop by Mokule'ia to see where it all began. Book a tour to see more Lost sites, such as the Dharma village, Jacob's lighthouse, and more.

Dubrovnik, Croatia — Game of Thrones

If you were to walk down the streets of coastal city Dubrovnik, Croatia, you'd immediately recognize the cobblestone roads and gothic architecture as King's Landing, aka the capital of the Seven Kingdoms in Game of Thrones . If you want to snap some selfies in particularly iconic spots, head to the Old Town neighborhood or the Walls of Dubrovnik, where members of the Lannister family spent much of the series brooding.

Astoria, Oregon — "The Goonies"

Because the '80s classic was both set and filmed in Astoria, the Oregon port town is filled with "Goonies" relics. While there's no comprehensive tour of all the must-see film sites, fans regularly create their own tours by visiting the home of Mikey (Sean Astin) and Brand (Josh Brolin) on 38th street, Ecola State Park (the former site of the Fratellis' restaurant), Haystack Rock, Cannon Beach, and more.

King’s Cross Station in London — Harry Potter

Even if you've only seen the first Harry Potter film once, you likely remember the iconic scene in which Harry and the Weasley family walk straight through a brick wall at King's Cross Station to reach Platform 9-and-three-quarters. The magical platform to the Hogwarts Express is seen and mentioned again multiple times throughout the film series, and has become so well known that King's Cross Station actually marked the platform between platforms nine and 10. HP fans now regularly stop there for photoshoots.

Oxford University in England — Harry Potter

The famed English university served as the set of numerous scenes throughout the Harry Potter series. From staircases to cloisters to the school's Bodleian Library , so many corners of the university ended up becoming parts of Hogwarts that a visit there may feel like a visit to the actual wizarding world. To top it off, the great hall of Oxford's Christ Church College was the inspiration behind Hogwarts' Great Hall, and the two are nearly identical.

Glenfinnan Viaduct in Inverness-shire, Scotland — Harry Potter

Glenfinnan is a scenic hamlet in the Scottish Highlands , and it also happens to be the home of the Hogwarts Express track, aka the Glenfinnan Viaduct. The elevated track, which was used in the second and third Harry Potter films ("The Chamber of Secrets" and "The Prisoner of Azkaban," respectively), draws fans from all over the world. You can see the viaduct by stopping at the Glenfinnan Visitor Center, or by booking a train ride across it .

Baseball Field in Dyersville, Iowa — "Field of Dreams"

"If you build it, he will come!" The famous line from 1989's "Field of Dreams" must've been somewhat prophetic, because now, people from around the world come to see the Iowa baseball field that was built for the movie. Head to Dyersville on any given summer day and watch hoards of film buffs gather on the diamond to play some ball, tour the site, or even rent out the home from the movie .

Devil’s Tower in Wyoming — "Close Encounters of the Third Kind"

Any "Close Encounters" fan will recognize Devil's Tower as the mysterious mountain at the center of the movie's plot. The otherworldly, flat-topped structure is actually a real mountain (or butte) in the Bear Lodge Ranger District of northeastern Wyoming. It became the first U.S. national monument in 1906, and while you won't find any extraterrestrial beings at its base, you will see plenty of wildlife and awe-striking scenery.

Painted Ladies in San Francisco — Full House

Most '90s babies will remember the scene in the opening credits of Full House in which the Tanner family has a picnic in front of a scenic row of colorful houses. Well, those houses actually exist. If you head to San Francisco's Alamo Square, you can sit on the lawn and take in the sight of those 7 iconic Victorian homes across the street. (Though if you want to see the house used as the Tanners' actual home in the show, you'll have to head a mile northwest to 1709 Broderick Street.)

Apartment Building at 90 Bedford Street in New York City — Friends

Friends has amassed a cult following of sorts over the years, so it's only fitting that the apartment building used for exterior shots of the characters' homes became a major tourist attraction . While the interiors of the two main apartments in the show were actually just Burbank-based sets, the greenish-gray facade used for the exteriors can be found on the corner of Bedford and Grove Streets in Manhattan's Greenwich Village.

Skellig Michael, County of Kerry, Ireland — "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and "Star Wars: The Last Jedi"

Good news, Star Wars fans: You can visit a piece of the film franchise's history IRL if you're willing to travel to a remote part of Ireland. The island of Skellig Michael played the part of Ahch-To, the rocky planet where Luke Skywalker and Rey spent time in "The Force Awakens" and "The Last Jedi." Interestingly, most parts of Skellig Michael that fans see in the movies are actually part of a 1,500-year-old Gaelic monastery.

Hanapepe Valley in Kauai, Hawaii — "Jurassic Park" and "Jurassic World"

Remember that scene in the original "Jurassic Park" film where the cast helicopters down onto Isla Nublar as a giant waterfall cascades behind them? Well, that waterfall really exists — in Hawaii. It's part of Kauai's lush Hanapepe Valley, which is actually the site of several scenes in both "Jurassic Park" and "Jurassic World." Hawaii visitors can even go on guided Jurassic Park -themed tours to see multiple filming locations from the movies.

Albuquerque, New Mexico — Breaking Bad

Any Breaking Bad fan would recognize the house at 3828 Piermont Dr. NE in Albuquerque, New Mexico: It's the home of Walter White. But that's not the only location from the show you can visit around town. Stop by the A1A Car Wash (actually called Mister Car Wash) at 9516 Snow Heights Circle, then head to Mexican restaurant Twisters on Isleta Boulevard, which played the role of the Los Pollos Hermanos fast food joint in the show.

Doune Castle in Doune, Scotland — "Monty Python and the Holy Grail"

Fun fact about Doune Castle: It was used to depict nearly every castle the characters travel to in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" — the producers simply used different angles to create the illusion that numerous locations were used. Head to the Stirling district of central Scotland if you'd like to visit — and because fans of the film regularly stop by, there should be plenty of people around with whom you can discuss the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow.

Point Dume, Malibu — "Planet of the Apes"

This unassuming beach may not look much different than any other beach along the California coast , but it's actually part of one of the most famous plot twists in cinematic history. At the end of the original "Planet of the Apes" film, the characters walk along this very beach, believing they're on another planet, only to come across the ruins of the Statue of Liberty. Though no props from the movie remain, fans regularly stop by Point Dume for photos.

Skopelos, Greece — "Mamma Mia!"

It's hard to forget the vibrant colors and stunning architecture of the Greek island in "Mamma Mia!" Though the story takes place on a fictional island, fans can visit the real-life island of Skopelos in the western Aegean Sea, where the movie was shot. You can even hop on a bus tour that takes fans to several iconic filming locations, including the Agios Ioannis Chapel and Kastani Beach.

Belvoir Castle, Wilton House, Burghley House, and Hatfield House in England — The Crown

The Crown 's filming locations include towns and palaces all over the United Kingdom , but fans are most likely to recognize England's Belvoir Castle, Wilton House, Burghley House, and Hatfield House — all of which have ties to real royalty. These four estates were used for both exterior and interior shots in the series, and fans may particularly recognize Belvoir Castle and Wilton House as a stand-ins for Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace , respectively.

Carrie Bradshaw’s Apartment in New York City — Sex and the City

And I couldn't help but wonder... what ever happened to Carrie Bradshaw's apartment? If you, like many Sex and the City fans, have asked yourself that question in recent years, the answer is right where it's always been: 66 Perry Street in Manhattan's West Village. Though the interior shots of Carrie's famous digs were filmed on sets, you can visit the brownstone used for the exteriors. While you're at it, grab a seat on a SATC hotspot tour to see more famous locales from the show.

Bayon Temple, Cambodia — "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider"

Believe it or not, the ethereal stone palace Angelina Jolie's character travels to in "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" was not a set built for the movie. This very real Cambodian structure is known as Bayon Temple, and fans of the franchise can find it in the Jayavarman capital of Angkor Thom. It was originally built as a Buddhist temple, but tourists now visit to see Bayon's hieroglyphic-like art and "face towers," which feature hundreds of carved faces.

Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio — "The Shawshank Redemption"

If you want to get up close and personal with the prison Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) famously escaped from in "The Shawshank Redemption," you can — but you'll have to travel to Ohio rather than Maine, where the film takes place. Ohio State Reformatory lies about halfway between Cleveland and Columbus, and if you stop for a photo or tour (the reformatory hasn't actually been used as a prison since 1990), you'll notice it still looks exactly like Shawshank State Penitentiary.

Cafe des 2 Moulins in Paris — "Amélie"

Whether you sit down and have a meal at Cafe des 2 Moulins or simply stop out front for a photo, this aesthetically pleasing eatery is a must-visit for fans of French rom-com "Amélie." The quintessential Parisian cafe, adorned with bright red awning, is the workplace of the film's title character, and pays homage to its history with paintings of Amélie incorporated into the decor. You can find the cafe at 15 Rue Lepic in Montmartre.

The Harbor Freeway in Los Angeles — "La La Land"

Few films open with as much gusto as "La La Land." The vivacious dance moves, the brightly colored cars and clothes, and downtown Los Angeles glimmering in the distance — it's truly an unforgettable scene, and it all takes place on the Harbor Freeway, one of LA's busiest roadways. Because the road is an elevated highway, there aren't many ways to visit it, per se, but if you're in LA, you can drive across it near the city's center.

Varda Viaduct in Adana, Turkey — "Skyfall"

If you're a James Bond fan, the ominous Varda Viaduct is worth a visit. Originally built as a railway between Europe and the Middle East, the viaduct was featured in the opening chase scene of 2012's "Skyfall" and has become a treasured piece of Bond history. You can visit by riding a train across or by parking at a nearby overlook.

Staircase at West 167th Street in the Bronx — "Joker"

For years, the set of steps that connect Shakespeare and Anderson Avenues in the Bronx's Highbridge neighborhood were just that: a set of steps. That all changed when Joaquin Phoenix famously danced down them in 2019's "Joker." When the stairs even appeared in the film's poster, fans began flocking to New York City just to take a photo in front of them. The steps are, of course, still there today, but you may have to fight through a crowd of Batman fanatics to get a good look at them.

Tom’s Restaurant in New York City — Seinfeld

While all those famous Monk's Cafe scenes in Seinfeld were filmed on a soundstage, an actual New York diner was used for the exterior shots! Tom's Restaurant in Manhattan's Morningside Heights neighborhood starred as the eatery Jerry and his friends frequented in the sitcom, and the restaurant is still open today. According to reviews, the food there is actually pretty fantastic — and you can head to the corner of Broadway and West 112th Street to try it for yourself.

Apartment Building at 455 Water Street in Brooklyn — Gossip Girl

Whether you're an Upper East Sider, a Brooklynite, or none of the above, you likely remember the brown brick apartment building next to the Manhattan Bridge as the home of Penn Badgley's Gossip Girl character, Dan Humphrey. Well, if you head to Water Street in Brooklyn's glitzy DUMBO neighborhood, you can actually catch a glimpse of the building's interior. While NYC Gossip Girl tours exist, most focus on Manhattan locations and leave the beloved Brooklyn facade off the list.

Pike Place Market in Seattle — "Sleepless in Seattle"

Are you a romantic-comedy superfan? If so, you may want to plan a trip to Seattle for a DIY "Sleepless in Seattle" tour. The city's ever popular Pike Place Market is the setting of multiple scenes, whereas the houseboat used as Sam and Jonah's home in the film can be found on the dock near Westlake Avenue North. And make sure to check out Athenian Seafood Restaurant & Bar, which features a barstool with a plaque reading "Tom Hanks Sat Here," referencing the scene filmed there.

Katz Delicatessen in New York City — "When Harry Met Sally"

Want to have what she's having? Head to 205 East Houston Street on New York City's Lower East Side to find Katz Deli, aka the place where the most iconic scene from "When Harry Met Sally" took place. Aside from its appearance in one of the most well-known rom-coms of all time, Katz Delicatessen has also become famous over the past few decades for serving up enormous pastrami sandwiches (which is just another reason to visit, if you ask us).

Stairs to the Philadelphia Museum of Art — "Rocky"

Cue the "Rocky" theme music! Sylvester Stallone's Rocky Balboa triumphantly running up a city staircase is arguably one of the most iconic scenes in cinematic history. And if you head to Philly , you can not only see those exact stairs, but you can recreate the scene entirely. The staircase actually serves as the entrance to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, but luckily, you can visit the stairs without having a ticket to the museum.

A Complete Guide to 'Yellowstone' Filming Locations

Explore the set locations of Paramount Network's hit show

" Yellowstone " takes viewers on a wild ride as they watch how the family of Montana's largest contiguous ranch, the fictional Yellowstone Dunton Ranch, stays in power and keeps their generational property intact. It is the nucleolus for massive drama: Outside developers are relentlessly trying to seize the land, and that chaos bleeds out into the bordering Broken Rock Indian Reservation and Yellowstone National Park . This is the new frontier in the Wild West of modern times for Big Sky country, and sometimes it gets bloody.

With writer and director Taylor Sheridan at the helm, the Western drama features a cast of mavericks: Kevin Costner as patriarch John Dutton, Wes Bentley as the conflicted and often malevolent Jamie Dutton, Luke Grimes as the self-sacrificing Kayce Dutton, Kelly Reilly as the spitfire Beth Dutton, Cole Hauser as the merciless-yet-amorous Rip Wheeler, Kelsey Asbille as the pensive Monica Long, Gil Birmingham as Thomas Rainwater, and Mo Brings Plenty played by the real-life Mo Brings Plenty.

While most of the first three seasons of this hit show, which premiered in 2018 on Paramount Network , were filmed in and around Utah, production moved to Montana for the fourth season and onward. (See a list of filming and production locations on IMDb .)

Keep reading to learn about where Yellowstone is filmed.

Ogden and Other Utah Locations

Before "Yellowstone" premiered, more than 20 locations in Utah were used as the backdrop for the show’s first three seasons.

In Ogden, Utah , a ski town that also has plenty of mountain biking and hiking in the summer months, you’ll find the exterior of the show’s Schwartz & Meyer bank building at 2505 Lincoln Avenue. Wander down 25 th Street, a three-block shopping district with plenty of restaurants, boutiques, and art galleries, also featured in the show. Finally, for the full "Yellowstone" experience, enjoy an adult beverage at The Outlaw Saloon and sit in the stands for the Odgen Pioneer Stadium rodeo.

An hour south of Odgen in Spanish Forks, where the Utah County Fair is held, is where rodeo scenes for "Yellowstone" were filmed at the Spanish Fork Fairgrounds .

In Park City, you can see Dan Jenkins' luxury lodge, located at the Nicklaus Clubhouse at Promontory Point—make dinner reservations at The Peak restaurant or watch the sunset on the View Deck.

Missoula, Montana

Now that the series has moved filming locations to Montana, you'll see scenes throughout the series in and around Missoula and across the state.

In the heart of Missoula, visit Ryman Street and Ruby’s Café —the setting for the memorable shoot-out scene. In a pivotal part of the series, Beth Dutton meets Carter outside a hospital, filmed at the Missoula Community Medical Center . This is also where John Dutton recovered after being shot in the season three finale.

Several scenes were filmed at The Missoula County Courthouse at 200 West Broadway as well as the Garlington Building , located across the street. A protest is held outside of the fictional Livestock Association’s Livingston Field Office, which in real life is a simple building at the corner of Railroad Street and Woody Street in Missoula. Glen’s Café , 30 minutes south of Missoula in Florence, is where John Dutton ordered a Salisbury steak—Glen’s sells special "Yellowstone" T-shirts currently.

Just 19 miles north of Missoula, on the south end of the Flathead Reservation, sits the Gray Wolf Peak Casino .

Chief Joseph Ranch, Montana

The show’s Yellowstone Dunton Ranch can be found nestled in the small town of Darby, 90 minutes south of Missoula. The stunning Chief Joseph Ranch is one of the main filming locations for the series. Located near the Bitterroot Valley, with Trapper Peak on the horizon, this historic landmark is also a family-owned working guest ranch.

The land was inhabited for hundreds of years by the Salish Native American tribe, with a trail that Lewis and Clark and the Nez Percé tribe followed, cutting through the property. Chief Joseph traveled across this land in the late 1800s. Homesteaders settled on the ranch—Shelton Ranch—in 1880, followed by two men, William Ford and Howard Clark Hollister, who began building the current-day lodge in 1917. The Ford-Hollister 6,000-square-foot lodge was renamed the Chief Joseph Ranch in the early 1950s.

Chief Joseph Ranch used to accept guest reservations but is not currently doing so.

Hamilton, Montana

One hour south of Missoula in Hamilton, the show’s Montana Livestock Association building was filmed at 163 S. 2 nd Street in the downtown area. The deadly car chase scene was filmed on Meridian Road and Bear Creek Road, 12 miles north of Hamilton.

The governor’s house is also located in the Bitterroot Valley’s Hamilton at the Daly Mansion , a historic late-1800s, 24,000-square-foot Victorian home that is now a museum and wedding venue. The Daly Mansion is open to the public for tours .

Helena, Montana

The show’s governor’s office, which is filmed at the Montana State Capital , is in Helena. Enjoy video and virtual tours of the capital building or see it in person over the summer during a guided tour, led by the legislative services division. In season one of the show, the governor’s office is in the actual state capital, but in season five, John Dutton is sworn in at Missoula County Courthouse with a tight shot so it’s not readily discernible that it’s not the genuine state capital.

Crow India Reservation

Located in southern Montana, 10 miles outside of Billings, is the setting for the fictional Broken Rock Reservation, where Thomas Rainwater resides. It was filmed at Montana’s Crow Reservation , the largest reservation in the state of Montana with more than two million acres. This is also the setting for the Tribal Casino, located at the real Apasaalooke Nights Casino in Crow Agency.

Headquartered in Crow Agency, the Crow Tribe has a membership of about 11,000 and they manage a herd of 300 bison. The Crow Native Days is in June and the Crow Fair and Rodeo is in July.

Guthrie, Texas

During a plot twist in season four of "Yellowstone," the 6666 Ranch (the Four Sixes Ranch) was introduced when the lovable ranch hand Jimmy was relocated there to learn how to become a dependable and hardworking cowboy. The historic Four Sixes Ranch, founded in 1870, is located near Guthrie and they specialize in American Quarter Horses and Angus cattle.

You can visit the open-to-the-public 6666 Supply House, which is still standing in the same spot since 1900. The 6666 Ranch, which Sheridan owns, is reportedly the setting for a new "Yellowstone" spinoff. (Other show spinoffs include "1883," "1923," and "Bass Reeves.")
