“Check Fuel Cap” Light On? (4 Causes and How to Turn Off)

check fuel cap message

When you get gas, it’s important to screw the fuel cap on all way way and make sure it’s tight. If you don’t, you are likely to see a check engine light soon after you drive away from the gas station.

In addition to a check engine light, some vehicles have a “check fuel cap” or “check gas cap” light. This light turns on when a problem is detected with the EVAP system in your vehicle.

While a “check fuel cap” message sounds self explanatory, there is one instance where the root cause of the problem is not the gas cap itself. Read on to learn more about this common issue and how to clear this warning light.

Table of Contents

What Does “Check Fuel Cap” Mean?

“Check Fuel Cap” is a convenient message to the driver that indicates the likely cause of the check engine light that just popped up on the dash. This helps the driver narrow down the cause of the check engine light without needing to scan a code.

In some cases, a fuel cap symbol (shown below) may appear in place of text.

check gas cap symbol

Common Causes of “Check Fuel Cap” Warning

The diagnostic steps to find the root cause of your Check Gas Cap warning light are fairly straightforward. Here are the most likely causes.

1) Missing Gas Cap

A missing gas cap is the #1 cause of this warning light illuminating, and the fix is really simple. Just put the gas cap back and off you go.

It’s easy to forget your gas cap when you’re filling the tank. If you live in a state where you have gas station attendants, these attendants have to service many vehicles at the same time and could easily forget when the gas station gets busy.

It’s usually worth it to drive back to the gas station that you last fueled up at (if it’s within a reasonable distance. The cap may have been turned it to the gas attendant by another motorist or it may even be laying in the same spot it was accidentally left at.

missing fuel cap

2) Bad Fuel Cap Gasket (or Bad Gas Cap)

If your fuel cap is old, it might be time to simply replace it. As your gas cap ages, the gasket that seals the tank may break down and allow fuel vapors to escape.

Your vehicle would detect this pressure differential in the fuel tank and throw a check engine light (in addition to the “check fuel cap” message).

3) Loose Fuel Cap

A loose fuel cap is harder to detect because it looks like your cap bas been replaced. To check for a loose fuel cap, make sure you tighten the cap until you hear a click. Some fuel caps will ratchet, allowing you to click the cap multiple times. One click should be plenty.

Sometimes you may need to remove the cap completely and retighten just to make sure the gas cap is threaded onto the tank correctly. Do this if you’ve tried to tighten the fuel cap and the warning light persists.

tighten gas cap

4) Leak in the EVAP System

A leak in the EVAP system is less fun to troubleshoot, but it is the likely cause of your check engine light if you have replaced the gas cap and still have a warning light. Parts of the EVAP system sit around the fuel tank but also in the engine bay, since the captured fuel vapors are routed into the intake for combustion.

Leaks in the EVAP system may originate from a bad hose, the purge valve , or the  charcoal canister .

Sometimes you can smell fuel vapors near the source of the EVAP leak. Check for a gasoline smell under the hood or near the gas tank and you may be able to narrow it down.

What Happens When You Have an EVAP Leak?

Gasoline evaporates when it is exposed to air. This requires fuel systems to be sealed to contain the vapors so they cannot escape.

The purpose of the EVAP system is to capture and recirculate these fuel vapors within the fuel system. Once the vapors are captured, they are moved through a purge valve back to the intake manifold. These vapors then make their way into the combustion chamber with the rest of the atomized fuel from the fuel injectors.

When you have an EVAP leak, gasoline will slowly evaporate out of the fuel system. This is both harmful for the environment and reduces your vehicle’s fuel efficiency.

How to Reset a “Check Gas Cap” Light

check gas cap light

Here are some simple steps you can follow to eliminate the gas cap as a possible cause of your warning light.

1) Turn Off Engine

The engine computer likely won’t retest the EVAP system while the vehicle is running, so you’ll have to turn the car off while troubleshooting. It’s also safer to turn the car off when you’re opening the gas tank anyway.

2) Unscrew the Fuel Cap

Remove the fuel cap completely and start over. That way you can make sure the cap is threaded on correctly.

3) Inspect the Fuel Cap

Check the underside of the gas cap to make sure the gasket is in good shape. Look for any flaws or excessive play in the fuel cap that could allow air to escape the tank.

4) Tighten the Fuel Cap Completely

Thread the fuel cap onto the gas tank and tighten until you hear a click.

5) Recheck for the Warning Light

If you want to check to see if the light returned, you’ll have to turn the car back on. The vehicle will run its EVAP test which may require you to drive around for a bit. If the Check Fuel Cap light does not return, then congratulations; you fixed your car!

Can You Drive With the Check Fuel Cap Warning?

Although you can drive with the Check Fuel Cap warning illuminated, it is advised that you do not do so any longer than is necessary to reach your immediate destination. Continuing to drive with a leaking EVAP system is harmful to the environment.

Additionally, it will cost you money in reduced fuel efficiency over time. If you live in an area that performs smog tests, this light will make you fail the test .

It’s important to make sure you understand any warning light you see on the dash. If you notice an unfamiliar light on the dash, check the owner’s manual for your vehicle. If you bought your vehicle used and it did not come with the manual, you can typically find a copy of the owner’s manual online.

Once you’ve addressed the Check Fuel Cap light, you’re good to go. The light shouldn’t come back unless a new leak is discovered.

If the light does come back after screwing the gas cap back on tightly, the root cause of your light is some other problem with the EVAP system. You may want to visit a mechanic to have them check your fuel system, and to ensure you don’t also have a fuel leak.

Dodge Journey Check Engine Light On: Why and What to Do

The check engine is the most common warning light that appears in the Dodge Journey’s instrument cluster.  Well over half of this site’s content is related to solving the various reasons why the check engine light comes on.

Dodge Journey Check Engine Light

The good news is that the check engine light indicates that there are Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) stored in your Journey’s computer , which is a very good thing.  DTC’s really help save time determining what is wrong with your vehicle.

Dodge Journey Check Engine Light On

The check engine light is often referred to as the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) or Service Engine Soon light.  All three terms are 100% interchangeable.

Table of Contents

  • What Are Trouble Codes ?
  • How to Pull Trouble Codes

How to Reset the Check Engine Light

Common questions, what are trouble codes.

Pulling Trouble Codes

Trouble codes are a number sequence of letters and numbers that correspond with a standardized list of problems that can occur in any vehicle, including the Dodge Journey . Some of them are Dodge specific, while most have the same meaning no matter who made the vehicle.

Common OBD II Codes

The most common of all trouble codes is P0420 (it indicates your Dodge Journey’s catalytic converter isn’t scrubbing pollutants efficiently).

Here are some of the other most common codes:

  • P0442 – Small EVAP leak (most commonly fixed by tightening a loose gas cap or replacing it)
  • P0300 – Random misfire (bad ignition coil(s), spark plugs, or spark plug wires).
  • P0128 – Engine running too cool (almost always caused by a thermostat that’s stuck open)
  • P0172 – Air Fuel mixture too rich (there are many causes, including oxygen sensors, leaking injectors, or too much fuel pressure)

The most common codes are related to the emissions system .  Some of them are as easy to fix as replacing your Journey’s.  Others require serious diagnostic tests from a repair shop.

How to Pull Trouble Codes on the Dodge Journey

How to pull trouble codes from the dodge journey

You can either pull the trouble codes from your Journey’s PCM (Powertrain Control Module) yourself, or you can bring your vehicle to a parts store or shop to have it scanned.

Pull Them Yourself

You can put a scan tool into the OBD II port and pull codes out of the diagnostic system yourself.  Any vehicle made for the 1996 model year and up uses the same protocol.

You can usually find the OBD II port underneath the Journey’s steering wheel. The exact location of the port is going to depend on what model year you have. If you don’t see it check the owner’s manual or do a quick google image search.

Once your scanner is online, you can pull the codes. You should see a retrieve codes option.

Take Your Carortruck to a Shop or Parts Store

2013 dodge journey gas cap light reset

If you don’t have a scan tool, you can take your Journey to the local parts store.  Most of them are happy to pull the codes for you for free .

A lot of auto shops also offer free scan service, but you may find pressured into authorizing whatever repairs they suggest on the spot.

Once you have the codes in hand, you can look them up and determine what’s wrong with your Journey.

There are three ways to reset the Dodge Journey’s check engine light.  We recommend trying to identify the problem and fixing it before resetting the check engine light.

1. Fix and Wait

The best way to clear the check engine light is to pull the trouble code, identify and fix the issue and then drive your Journey around until the module that threw the code recognizes that the problem is fixed.

Sometimes it can take a few drive cycles for your vehicle’s check engine light to shut down.  Other times, it’ll happen as soon as you fire the vehicle up.  Some folks prefer to clear the code and see if it comes back on

2. Use an OBDII Scanner

You can use an OBDII scanner to turn off your Journey’s check engine light.  The catch is, that if you don’t fix the problem, the light will turn on again.

This is done by connecting a scan tool to your Journey’s PCM and choosing the “clear codes” option.

Once you’ve identified and fixed the issue, wait for three or four days of normal driving to see if the Check Engine Light turns back on.

If it does not come back on after this period, then you can assume that your Dodge Journey is fixed and the light won’t be turning back on.

3. Disconnect the Battery

If you’ve identified and fixed the issue that caused your Journey’s Check Engine Light to come on, resetting the light is as simple as disconnecting and reconnecting the battery. This can be done by unhooking both cables from the battery terminals (negative cable first) and waiting 30 seconds before reconnecting them.

Once the battery is reconnected, your Check Engine Light should be reset and should no longer be illuminated. If the light does come back on again after you reset it, then it means that the issue has not been properly fixed and needs further attention.

Will a Vehicle Fail Inspection With the Check Engine Light On

If you are looking to get your Dodge Journey through emissions and the check engine light is on, it is an automatic fail in almost every State in the Union.  It doesn’t matter why the check engine light is on, it only matters that a code is stored.

Here’s a list of the emissions regulations of each State .

You can’t reset a check engine light to circumvent emissions requirements.  When you reconnect the battery, the OBD II system is going to need several drive cycles to qualify to take an emissions test, which will give it enough time to recognize the issue.

Can You Drive With the Check Engine Light On?

Whether you can drive your Journey with the check engine light on depends on the code(s) that triggered the check engine light.

You certainly can’t drive the Dodge Journey with the check engine light flashing.   A flashing check engine light indicates that there is a serious problem with the engine.

Why is My Check Engine Light Flashing?

A flashing Check Engine Light typically indicates a serious issue with your Journey and should not be ignored.  It usually indicates a catastrophic misfire that can dump raw fuel into the exhaust system, which can damage the catalytic converter and cause backfiring.  Do not drive your vehicle with a flashing check engine light .

Okay so I have been getting a check engine light lately and its been a evap error, so I took it over to Hemi GTX's house and he told me that he would get the same thing and the problem is that the gas cap tends to leak if not tightened properly. i did on my 02 but not the 07. ended up replacing the gas cap from the dealer and didnt get one after. they said it could be the seal is just worn and allows just enough air in to cause the cel

im not particularly indepth with these trucks but there should be an evap cannister somewhere under the box of the truck of near the rear of the cab on the underside, should have a bunch of emissions hoses comming from it and be about the size of a shoe box. im betting its clogged or dirty. try disconnecting the lines and blow some compressed air through the line and have a buddy feel on the other end of there is pressure going through it try a new gas cap first though, its cheap and easy to install, a evap code will be triggered if the gas cap in secure

Table of Contents

Background – P0456 Dodge

The p0456 is one of the most common check engine light (CEL) codes and refers to a small leak in the Evaporation Emission Control System.

Over 90% of the time the solution that fixes the problem is to replace the Dodge gas cap ! As they age, the rubber seal between the gas cap and the fuel filler neck can begin to deteriorate and is no longer able to hold the proper suction required by the fuel system.

Gas caps on modern vehicles typically last between 50,000 and 100,000 miles. For this reason, it is not uncommon for the gas cap to lose its seal over time and require replacement.

It is not uncommon for the p0456 code to be accompanied by the p0420 code as well. Replace the gas cap and reset the codes using your ODB2 code reader . Or drive 100 miles and the check engine light will reset on its own, if the problem has been resolved.

Solution – Replace the Leaking Gas Cap

The link below is to the replacement part on Amazon. The part number is included as well, in case you want to look for it somewhere else:

Other, less typical causes of the p0456 error code can include a small leak elsewhere in the fuel system, including the filler tube, the purge valve, the system hose, as well as the various gaskets within the system.

A larger air leak in the system will usually throw a different code, for example the p0455.

Check Fuel Cap

Quarterwave.

I hate these little nagging things with cars now days....

After 3.5 years and 41,000 miles, the Check Fuel Cap message is coming on and annoying my easily annoyed wife.

I checked the cap, re-seated it, ran the car, message came up. I scanned it, no codes.

Besides the obvious, bad cap or seal, has there been any trend on these things having some other failure?

I buy from a very good and reputable dealer, but every time I ask if they have heard of something happening on others, they always say no. Chrysler probably makes them say no. LOL>

could be fixed as easy as just replacing the cap or something more complicated who knows.my son has a 5 yr old gmc truck that has twice had a warning light about his emission control problem both times has been a cheap fix but it happens to all the manufacture of autos. nature of the beast, of course in the old days you wouldn't get no warnings that something wasn't right and it would go until it caused a real problem or breakdown at a unfortunate  time. just wait till we get driverless cars won't that be fun,,,,,, i dont think so...

It's either a bad fuel  cap, or a bad fill port (most likely).  Next time you fill up, check underneath the rear driver side to see if you find any signs of a leak in the filler tube.  If not, replace the gas cap (only a few dollars) - that will almost certainly fix the issue.  If that doesn't fix it, then you'll need to do a few more drastic things, including a more thorough inspection of the filler tube and/or dropping the fuel tank and inspecting for obvious signs of damage.

Be sure to use OEM (from dealer) gas cap only. Aftermarket won't seal good.

Resetting Gas Cap Indicator

2013 dodge journey gas cap light reset

  • Add to quote

I was staying with my uncle this past week and my truck was parked on the street. At about 3:30 in the morning my cousin heard something out front, we went out front, and then he stated that there was this girl walking down the street. He said he didn't recognize the girl that was walking. Now the next morning my uncle and I were heading to the corner store to get some coffee. As I was driving down the road a interior ding occurred and the prompt for gas cap was indicated. So I pulled over to check the gas cap, and sure enough it was not seated in the opening to the tank properly. Now every time I start my truck up the indicator stays. I'm am not sure how to clear the indicator. If there is anyone that can possibly help that would be fantastic.

Will usually reset itself after a few times driving after it has had time to run its usual diagnostics test shouldn't have to do anything
