Top 10 Must-Visit Attractions in Chhattisgarh, India

Written by Surabhit Gupta.

Chhattisgarh lies centrally in India and is reachable from almost anywhere in the country. It has one of the most striking spectra of people. From tribals to city-dwellers, from the marginalized to the affluent, the daily wage earners to the mining barons.

Chhattisgarh is one of the greenest states of India, with a greater than 40 per cent forest cover. It is one of the most vibrant biodiversity hotspots of the sub-continent. It has 36 major and minor forts and hence the name.

forest-3511228_640

The state has many ancient monuments, rare species of flora and fauna, exquisitely carved temples, Buddhist monasteries, waterfalls, forts, caves and rock paintings. Most of these sites are off the beaten trail and unexplored and offer a unique and alternate experience as compared to some of the more mainstream and often overcrowded destinations.

1. Bilaspur

1024px-VIEW_OF_BILASPUR_FROM_RISHIKESH

The city of Bilaspur has a mostly migrant demographic. Most of the people migrated here from neighbouring states of Odisha, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh. The town has ancient mentions, but it really started gaining traction in the 1880s after the introduction of railways. Bilaspur is referred to as by some as the rice bowl of India. The main economic activities are weaving, agriculture, railways and coal mining. It is surrounded by hills rich in dolomite ore. The climate is pleasant in the winter, while the summers are scorching. It is best to avoid visiting in the summer.

1024px-Bilaspur_Moga_Picture_No._(8)

The culture is very diverse, owing to the large immigrant population. Bilaspur has some native dance styles, cuisine, music and traditional folk songs, of which Sohar songs, Bihav songs and Pathoni songs are the more known ones. The Odia Rout dance is also celebrated in the local Odia temples.

The dev bhog rice originally from Pendra has a unique aroma and a sticky texture. It is heavily used in local cuisine.

Madku Dweep is an island formed in the Shivnath river and is named after a monk. There is an old archaeological remain of a temple

Bilaspur is a major rail hub and connected to all parts of the country through rail.

Ratanpur_Mahamaya_Temple

It is an ancient temple site and is particularly renowned for its four-handed idol of Lord Vishnu.

Mahamaya Temple Ratanpur It is one of the most religiously-celebrated, architecturally magnificent and culturally rich temples of south-east India. It is said to be built on the spot where King Ratan, upon whom the city got its name had a sighting of Goddess Kali.

3. Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary

Jungle_Crossing

It is a 550sq km wildlife sanctuary, which is an hour’s drive from Bilaspur. It is best to visit it as a day trip as there is no facility for overnight stay. At night the National Highway passing through the sanctuary is closed due to the increasing incidences of human-animal encounters. It is one of the country’s most dense forests. The sanctuary is completely closed during the monsoon season.

4. Chaiturgarh Fort

It is one of the Strongest Natural Forts out of 36 forts from which the name CHHATISGARH is derived. The fort was built by PRITHVIDEV I in the 11th century by the king of the Kalachuri dynasty. Its also known as the KASHMIR OF CHHATTISGARH because of its ambient climate, mesmerizing scenic beauty. It has religious significance too, as in its vicinity, it is having the famous MAHISASURAMARDDINI TEMPLE as well as SHANKAR GUFA .

MahisasurMardiniTemple_Chaiturgarh_CG

It is a must-visit place because monuments are the grappling Iron that binds one generation to another and helps in inculcating a spirit of cultural nationalism in us making us aware of our rich cultural heritage

5. Amarkantak

1024px-Yantra_Mandir,_Amarkantak,_Madhya_Pradesh_20160704-_DSC2824-Edit

Amarkantak though technically in Madhya Pradesh, is a cultural extension of the Pendra district of Chhattisgarh and is the meeting point of the Vindhyas and the Satpuras.

1024px-Amarkantak

The legendary poet Kabir is said to have meditated on Kabir-Chabutra located in Amarkantak

6. Bhoramdeo Temple

1024px-Bhoramdeo_Temple,_Kawardha

Bhoramdeo Temple, or the ‘Khajuraho of Chhattisgarh’ not far from Amarkantak, is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and was built in the period of 7th to 11th century A.D and is beautifully located amidst the mountains.

7. Tirathgarh Waterfall

Waterfall_at_Tirathgarh

The Tirathgarh falls provide a panoramic view of the Kanger River tumbling down. The splashing streams of Tirathgarh waterfall with incredible speed. Since this is a popular site, you may find hordes of people sitting under the waterfall. Still, you can walk further down the levels to find an isolated spot. Numerous tourists visit the highly famous waterfall, mainly during the months between Octobers to February.

Nested in hilly plantation, this Tibetian Buddhist settlement is probably the most tranquil place in all of the states. It is better to skip the waterfalls as we will get to way better ones in a day or two. One of the best Chinese foods I have had was at the Tibetian Monastic Canteen. The lady who owned the place was amiable. Since we didn’t get what we ordered first, she offered us to pay half the price although we insisted that it was alright.

Daldaliya is a valley where the soil is such that it acts as a natural trampoline. The panorama of the hills and forest from here is simply breath-taking.

9. Rock Paintings

The paintings are done in natural colours that have hardly faded despite the years. The strangely carved figures are seen holding weapon-like objects and do not have apparent features. Notably, the nose and mouth are missing.

In Chhattisgarh, painted rock shelter was discovered by C.W. Anderson in the early 20th century. Since then, over 150 sites have been found.

Most of these 150 paintings are in the tribal regions of Bastar and Jagdalpur and are not worth the risk. They lie deep in the forests and often in Maoist disturbed areas.

10. Chitrakote Waterfalls

1024px-Chitrakot_waterfalls

It is located in the Jagdalpur district of Chhattisgarh and is about 30 meters in height. It is also the widest waterfall in India with a width of up to 300 meters in the monsoon. It has a distinct horseshoe shape and is called the Niagara Falls of India. During the monsoon, rainbows are formed with sun rays reflecting on mist from the waterfall, giving rise to a surreal view.

Chitrakote Falls is one of two waterfalls adjacent to the Kanger Valley National Park, the other being the Teerathgarh Falls.

6. Magnetic Waterfalls

Chitrakote Falls

Chitrakote Falls, Photo: https://goo.gl/FNC2qd

Chhattisgarh is blessed with exotic waterfalls and it is inescapable no matter how hard you try…

The beauty lingers… Still not convinced? Check out the three waterfalls of Chhattisgarh listed below:

Chitrakote Falls:

As magnificent as Niagara Falls, Chitrakote Falls more or less give a compliment to Niagara, if you ask me they are similar to Olsen sisters except without plastic surgery and foundations on. Indravati River, the name says it all…mighty and tough and it is one of the six waterfalls in India classified as “Geomorphosites” defined as landforms that acquire a scientific, aesthetic, cultural, historical, social and economic value due to human perception or exploitation.

The best feature about Chitrakote is a single flat flow that allows a free fall of mighty river Indravati. During low flow, you can notice the Chitrakote Fall in three braids unlike the monsoon season, hence, the best time to visit is when the level rises making the current swift and mighty. The strong current makes the ambience look misty from the plunge making a deep excavating. Truly a sight not to miss and you can also paddle around the river near the fall. Experience India’s largest waterfall.

Location: 50 km from Jagdalpur, Bastar district, 273 km from Raipur, Chhattisgarh

Teerathgarh Falls:

This mystic waterfall is a block designed fall, which appears to gush along a curvy slope wave after wave. The display picture certainly helps the imagine squall how the ambience would look or feel like. This single gush of water plunges 91 meters on the river surface, bouncing a series of pebbles and rocks. It’s calm and pleasant sound has a welcome feel to it and a spellbound effect to spectators.

This mesmerising waterfall is also known as milky fall for its white colour water formed as it gushes downward turning into pristine white colour. This time river Kanger occupies the claim for holding one of the best tourist spots to glance at the elegant fall and wander all day chipped in picnic and fun outdoor activities around the fall in the Kanger National Park.

Location: 35 kilometres south-west of Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh.

Tamra Ghoomar Waterfalls:

The green landscape on both sides makes this waterfall look even more lush. Tamra Ghoomar Waterfall, a tropical paradise was recently discovered with a height of 30 meters, this stunningly gracious waterfall is yet another plus point to Chhattisgarh tourism and this picture perfect scenery is filled with tranquil stillness and inspiring cliffs.

Tamra Ghoomar Falls is a natural wonder for tourists and it has become a popular picnic spot as well. This scenic spot near Chitrakoot is filled with untouched natural beauty and divine landscapes and a walk in this hidden treasure is not to be missed. Indeed a perfect example of one of its kind eco-tourism in India.

Location: 45 km from Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh

Tala is an important place for the archaeologist and a pride of Chhattisgarh. This landmark has seen many ruins and excavations and its added beauty attracts many visitors travelling to Chhattisgarh.

The ‘Rudra’ Sculpture:

One of the famous excavations is perhaps the ‘Rudra’ image of Lord Shiva. This rare sculpture gives us a glimpse into different shades of the Lord Shiva’s personality standing at the height of 254m and width of 1m. A unique sculpture of Lord Shiva was excavated at the Devrani temple during the year 1967-88.

Devrani – Jethani Temple:

Devrani – Jethani Temple flaunts excellent carving work and pillars. The temple consists of the Ardha Mandapa Garbha, Griha, and the Antraal. Along the temple, there are huge elephant statues guarding each side of the internal chambers which adds more royalty to the anagogic ambience.

Hence, Tala is a land of excavations and it is enriched with beautiful shaped sculptures dating back to the antiquated era. Many of the ruins are preserved in Tala and many more sculptures scatter all over the temple. Tala is a destination to wander the land of the lost and be secluded amongst nature and ancient artefacts.

About Chhattisgarh

The Very Heart of Incredible India

The state has various old historic points, exquisite wild life, wonderfully cut sanctuaries, regal residences, waterfalls, cavern, rock depictions and slope levels. The greater part of these locales is untouched and unexplored and offers unique and unforgettable experience to vacationers, along with mouth watering cuisine.

Chhattisgarh has positioned itself as the destination ‘full of surprises’ with some of the amazing destinations which could certainly lead to the growth of tourism in the future. It has created a niche for itself on the tourist map of India.

Chhattisgarh Tourism is also trying to incorporate carrying capacity analysis to the resource utilization. The state is covered with nearly 45% of the forests and 32% of tribal population, therefore, it offers immense opportunities for Eco-Ethno, Adventure and Cultural tourism.

"Exploration is really the essence of the human spirit"

Chhattisgarh with its rich history and cultural heritage, Chhattisgarh is a fascinating destination for history buffs and adventure seekers alike. Whether you're interested in ancient temples, tribal culture, or natural beauty, this state has something for everyone. So, if you're planning a trip to India, be sure to include Chhattisgarh in your itinerary and discover the hidden gems of this remarkable state.

Chhattisgarh is also home to several tribal communities, each with its unique customs and traditions. These tribes have a long and fascinating history, and their cultural heritage can be seen in various art forms, including dance, music, and handicrafts.

Another notable historical place in Chhattisgarh is Bastar Dushera, which is one of the longest and most vibrant festivals in the state. This annual event commemorates the victory of Lord Ram over the demon king Ravana and involves elaborate processions and performances.

After India gained independence in 1947, Chhattisgarh remained a part of Madhya Pradesh, but efforts for separate statehood for the region began to gain momentum in the late 20th century. Finally, on November 1, 2000, Chhattisgarh was carved out of Madhya Pradesh and established as a separate state. Raipur was chosen as the capital city, and the state was divided into 16 Chhattisgarhi-speaking districts.

Overall, Chhattisgarh's historical and cultural heritage, along with its natural beauty, make it a must-visit destination for anyone seeking a unique and enriching travel experience.
