However, Chhattisgarh also does not lag behind in urbanity, and a visit to the city of Raipur amply demonstrates that. With its numerous avenues for entertainment, it’s the favorite hangout of youngsters looking to have a great time. 1. Chitrakote Falls

When it comes to the topmost tourist attractions in Chhattisgarh, Chitrakote Falls inevitably finds its way to the top. This waterfall is located around 50km away from Jagdalpur of Bastar District. Also known as the mini-Niagara Fall of India, this horse-shaped waterfall makes it’s descend from a height of almost 100ft. Making its way through dense vegetation and cascades, it creates a spectacular sight. The roar of the waterfall reverberate through the surrounding areas, while the mist lingering at the base lends it an artistic view. Chitrakote Falls are formed by the waters of the River Indravati which flows from the Vindhya Mountain range. The best time to visit the waterfall is during the monsoon season, between the months of July and October.

2. Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary

Located around 100km from Raipur and 45km from Mahasumund City, Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the famous tourist attractions in Chhattisgarh. The sanctuary is home to Bar and Nawapara forest villages, and derives its name from them. Its landscape mostly consists of flat terrain dotted with occasional low and high hillocks. You should visit this sanctuary to catch a glimpse of the fearless Indian Bison, also known as “Gaur”. The sanctuary also houses other attractions including neelgai, wild boar, sambhar and cheetal. The park also boasts around 150 species of birds. Another delightful sight which you are sure to come across on a visit to this park is the barking deer.

3. Bhoramdeo Temple

At first sight, the temple bears a striking resemblance to the Sun Temple in Konark, or the Khajuraho Temple in Madhya Pradesh. It is believed that this temple was built somewhere around 7 th to 11 th century by King Ramachandra of the Nag dynasty. Located just 84km from the capital, Raipur, its home to fascinating archaeological remains besides being gifted with a traditional cultural heritage and architecture. It’s quite interesting to know that Sirpur finds a mention in the ancient epigraphic records dating back to the 5 th to 8 th century. Upon visiting this place, you can’t help but notice the slow pace at which life goes on in this quaint village. One of the major attractions is the Laxman Temple. A visit to the Laxman Temple is special because this is the first temple in India made from bricks. The temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, rests on an enormous platform and is accessible by steps both in the north and south.

Maitri Bagh (garden and zoo) is a great place to spend your day in the company of nature and wildlife. Located in Bhilai, the zoo comprises of 111 acres of park land. Maitri Bagh, a friendship garden, was established in the year 1972 by Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) as a symbol of India –Russia (then USSR) friendship. It is where the locals head to for relaxation and recreation. It boasts a massive musical fountain, boating facilities and perfectly manicured lawns. The park is also home to a zoo which houses an interesting variety of wildlife.

8. Dongargarh

Dongargarh is considered to be the top pilgrimage destination in Chhattisgarh and also a top tourist attraction. There is a famous temple here by the name of Maa Bamleshwari which stands atop a hilltop at almost 1,600ft. The temple is also referred to as Badi Bamleshwari. Another temple which lies about half a kilometer away from this temple is known as Choti Bamleshwari. The temple attracts thousands of devotees during the time of Navratras of Kavar (during Dusshera) and Chaitra (during Ramnavmi). During the occasion of Navratras, melas (fairs) are organized in the temple which last as long as a day. In the Maroda village of Gariaband district of Chhattisgarh lies an amazing sight. This village owes its popularity to its enormous shivling, which, some say, is the biggest in the world. However, what is even more interesting is that the shivling grows by six to eight inches every year. Measuring 18ft tall and 20ft wide, it’s a fascinating sight to come across. During the holy month of Shravan, this site is visited by a large number of devotees from all over the country. The people believe that one can get rid of all worries just by offering a jug of water to the shivling here.

10. Tirathgarh Falls

Tirathgarh Falls is one of the most visited places in Chhattisgarh. The beauty of these falls lie in the way they split into multiple falls as they descend from a height of almost 300ft, thus creating a spectacular sight. The waterfall is surrounded by lush green forest, while a small temple is located beside the falls.

11. Kanker Palace

Kanker Palace , now a part of heritage hotels of India, was built in the first quarter of the last century, and was earlier known as Radhanivas Bagicha. The palace, which once served as the residence of the British Agent during the British Raj, is now lived in by the royal family. Kanker Palace, with its colonial style architecture, is stately and elegant and exudes an old-world charm and ambience.

12. Achanakmar Tiger Reserve

Achanakmar Tiger Reserve was declared a tiger reserve under Project Tiger in 2009. Extending to over 557sq. km area in Bilaspur district of Chhattisgarh, it is home to an impressive amount of tigers. Visiting the tiger reserve can be an exciting experience. Apart from the tiger, you can also spot other forms of mammals including Indian giant squirrel, wild dog, hyena, sambar, leopard and tiger. Top 10 Must-Visit Attractions in Chhattisgarh, India

Chhattisgarh lies centrally in India and is reachable from almost anywhere in the country. It has one of the most striking spectra of people. From tribals to city-dwellers, from the marginalized to the affluent, the daily wage earners to the mining barons.

Chhattisgarh is one of the greenest states of India, with a greater than 40 per cent forest cover. It is one of the most vibrant biodiversity hotspots of the sub-continent. It has 36 major and minor forts and hence the name.

The state has many ancient monuments, rare species of flora and fauna, exquisitely carved temples, Buddhist monasteries, waterfalls, forts, caves and rock paintings. Most of these sites are off the beaten trail and unexplored and offer a unique and alternate experience as compared to some of the more mainstream and often overcrowded destinations.

1. Bilaspur

The city of Bilaspur has a mostly migrant demographic. Most of the people migrated here from neighbouring states of Odisha, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh. The town has ancient mentions, but it really started gaining traction in the 1880s after the introduction of railways. Bilaspur is referred to as by some as the rice bowl of India. The main economic activities are weaving, agriculture, railways and coal mining. It is surrounded by hills rich in dolomite ore. The climate is pleasant in the winter, while the summers are scorching. It is best to avoid visiting in the summer.

The culture is very diverse, owing to the large immigrant population. Bilaspur has some native dance styles, cuisine, music and traditional folk songs, of which Sohar songs, Bihav songs and Pathoni songs are the more known ones. The Odia Rout dance is also celebrated in the local Odia temples.

The dev bhog rice originally from Pendra has a unique aroma and a sticky texture. It is heavily used in local cuisine.

Madku Dweep is an island formed in the Shivnath river and is named after a monk. There is an old archaeological remain of a temple

Bilaspur is a major rail hub and connected to all parts of the country through rail.

It is an ancient temple site and is particularly renowned for its four-handed idol of Lord Vishnu.

Mahamaya Temple Ratanpur It is one of the most religiously-celebrated, architecturally magnificent and culturally rich temples of south-east India. It is said to be built on the spot where King Ratan, upon whom the city got its name had a sighting of Goddess Kali.

3. Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary

It is a 550sq km wildlife sanctuary, which is an hour’s drive from Bilaspur. It is best to visit it as a day trip as there is no facility for overnight stay. At night the National Highway passing through the sanctuary is closed due to the increasing incidences of human-animal encounters. It is one of the country’s most dense forests. The sanctuary is completely closed during the monsoon season.

4. Chaiturgarh Fort

It is one of the Strongest Natural Forts out of 36 forts from which the name CHHATISGARH is derived. The fort was built by PRITHVIDEV I in the 11th century by the king of the Kalachuri dynasty. Its also known as the KASHMIR OF CHHATTISGARH because of its ambient climate, mesmerizing scenic beauty. It has religious significance too, as in its vicinity, it is having the famous MAHISASURAMARDDINI TEMPLE as well as SHANKAR GUFA . 

It is a must-visit place because monuments are the grappling Iron that binds one generation to another and helps in inculcating a spirit of cultural nationalism in us making us aware of our rich cultural heritage

5. Amarkantak

Amarkantak though technically in Madhya Pradesh, is a cultural extension of the Pendra district of Chhattisgarh and is the meeting point of the Vindhyas and the Satpuras.

6. Bhoramdeo Temple 

Bhoramdeo Temple, or the ‘Khajuraho of Chhattisgarh’ not far from Amarkantak, is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and was built in the period of 7th to 11th century A.D and is beautifully located amidst the mountains.

7. Tirathgarh Waterfall 

The Tirathgarh falls provide a panoramic view of the Kanger River tumbling down. The splashing streams of Tirathgarh waterfall with incredible speed. Since this is a popular site, you may find hordes of people sitting under the waterfall. Still, you can walk further down the levels to find an isolated spot. Numerous tourists visit the highly famous waterfall, mainly during the months between Octobers to February.

Nested in hilly plantation, this Tibetian Buddhist settlement is probably the most tranquil place in all of the states. It is better to skip the waterfalls as we will get to way better ones in a day or two. One of the best Chinese foods I have had was at the Tibetian Monastic Canteen. The lady who owned the place was amiable. Since we didn’t get what we ordered first, she offered us to pay half the price although we insisted that it was alright.

Daldaliya is a valley where the soil is such that it acts as a natural trampoline. The panorama of the hills and forest from here is simply breath-taking.

9. Rock Paintings

The paintings are done in natural colours that have hardly faded despite the years. The strangely carved figures are seen holding weapon-like objects and do not have apparent features. Notably, the nose and mouth are missing. 

In Chhattisgarh, painted rock shelter was discovered by C.W. Anderson in the early 20th century. Since then, over 150 sites have been found.

Most of these 150 paintings are in the tribal regions of Bastar and Jagdalpur and are not worth the risk. They lie deep in the forests and often in Maoist disturbed areas.

10. Chitrakote Waterfalls

It is located in the Jagdalpur district of Chhattisgarh and is about 30 meters in height. It is also the widest waterfall in India with a width of up to 300 meters in the monsoon. It has a distinct horseshoe shape and is called the Niagara Falls of India. During the monsoon, rainbows are formed with sun rays reflecting on mist from the waterfall, giving rise to a surreal view.

Chitrakote Falls is one of two waterfalls adjacent to the Kanger Valley National Park, the other being the Teerathgarh Falls.

2. Bhoramdeo Temple

Location: 18 km North-West of the Tehsil town of Kawardha, Kabirdham district.

What is the speciality of this temple? Well, it is a complex of temples in the interior of the mountain range. It comprises of four temples – Bhoramdeo temple, Madwa Mahal, Istaliq temple and Cherki Mahal.

Bhoramdeo temple:

The main temple Bhoramdeo is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple called the Khajuraho of Chhattisgarh was constructed somewhere between the 7th and 11th centuries, and it stands strong ever since. Its outstanding structure and detailed carved images really are an impressive work of art. The temple contains finely sculpted images of the ten avatars of the Lord Vishnu, apart from images of Lord Shiva and Lord Ganesha.

Madwa Mahal:

Madwa Mahal has a traditional architecture embellishment as you enter the Mahal, located about a kilometre from the main temple. Madwa Mahal is focused more on the sacrament of marriage, as the structure is fabricated to that of a hall or pandal. Its walls are modelled with images of gods and erotic sculptures from Kama Sutra reflecting the tantric culture practised by the Nagawanshi kings.

Istaliq Temple:

Istaliq temple adjoining the main temple Bhoramdeo is in a state of disrepair or deterioration. The temple built with dried or burnt clay bricks has only a sanctum sanctorum without an entrance hall or mandap. The worthy of worship sculptures along with images of Uma Maheswar and of the king and queen standing in a worshipful pose are defied in this temple.

Cherki Mahal:

Cherki Mahal is the last temple in the complex dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple was built by Nagwamshi emperor in the 14th century. Smaller in size in comparison to Bhoramdeo temple and Madwa Mahal, Cherki Mahal is not easily locatable as it is situated in a thinly forested area. However, the roof of the holy place is idealised with the national flower of India, Lotus and the porch has many aesthetic repeated pattern.

Its many-sidedness revolves around the picturesque temples… but the lushness of temples is not all Chhattisgarh tour offers…

Located on the southern bank of river Sakari about 116 km north-west of Raipur is a peaceful and attractive place, Kawardha. The main attraction of the city is the magnificent palace built during Maharaja Dharamraj Singh’s reign, between 1936 and 1939. The Palace Kawardha is a mega structure built with Italian marble and stone, it sets in 11 acres of private of lush flowery garden.

Open Air Museum:

Open Air Museum is a popular tourist spot located within the complex of temples. This open-air museum has a large collection of archaeological antiquaries, unearthed from the area dating back to 2nd and 3rd century. Chhattisgarh Open-Air Museum conserves and protects the heritage items to display for the tourists. The open-air museum is also known as’Purkhouti Muktangan’.

Bhoramdeo Sanctuary:

With an undulating backdrop of the Bhoramdeo Temple which it is named after, Bhoramdeo Sanctuary covers a total area of about 300 sq. km. Covered by the hills and thick forests of the Maikal range, the sanctuary is still an undiscovered natural treasure trove. It houses a mini wildlife paradise here named as Bhoramdeo Wildlife Sanctuary and it is abundant with flora and fauna found approximately 20 km away from Kawardha city of Chhattisgarh.

The town of Sirpur has a rich background of traditional cultural heritage and architecture. Its pristine waters of the Mahanadi and the Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary on the Northeast, Sirpur is a small town about 84km from the capital, Raipur.

The Buddha Vihar:

The Buddha Vihar in Sirpur is older than Nalanda and it is an enriching experience to see its historic remains and sculptures. The Buddha Vihar has a tone of the Gupta dynasty temple, and the place is also known for – as the meeting point of Awlokiteshwar and Makarwahini Gange. What resides inside the temple is a six feet tall statue of Buddha that is placed meditating in its solitary ruins.

Surang Tila:

Surang Tila Temple stands out for its amazing structure. With a gobsmacking huge triple pyramid structure made of white stones, it has a platform of about 30-35 feet height. This divine temple reflects a style of its own and is one destination not to miss.

Laxman Temple and Museum:

Laxman temple is surrounded by neat, leafy grounds. This small but extraordinary brick temple is in relatively good shape and it is considered as an archaeological ground. This temple started out as a structure dedicated to Vishnu which now houses a museum in the Laxman temple premises. The Archaeological Survey of India has established a museum within the premises with a collection of some rare statues kept along with several other architectural memories. Such pieces are related to Shiva, Vaishnav, Jain religion and Buddha. The premises also host the annual Sirpur Festival, a medley of music, dance, art and culture.

Famous for its cultural heritage and ancient temples, Rajim hosts the holy union of three rivers Mahanadi, Pairi and Sondur. Hence, Rajim is known as the “Prayag” of the Chhattisgarh and every year visitors lump together from all across the country to be a part of the Chhattisgarh Kumbh Mela which begins from Magh Poornima and lasts till Mahashivratri.

Rajiv-Lochan Temple:

Rajiv-Lochan Temple is located about 30 km from Raipur Railway Station in a small town of Rajim. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the temple is a significant religious construction visited by devotees from all over the globe and the structure of the temple is supported by twelve towered columns cross-stitched with stone carvings, which bear the faces of the gods of the Hindu mythology.

Rajeshvar Temple:

Opposite to the western entrance of Rajiv-Lochan temple, Rajeshvar Temple is located. Similar to Rajiv-Lochan, this temple is also constructed over a Jagati which is 2 feet 8 inches high. The temple is composed of a mandapa, antarala and garbha-griha, it place a Nandi in a small hall in between the sanctum and mandapa.

5. Champaranya

Located about 60 km from the state capital of Raipur Champaranya {earlier known as Champajhar} is a small village and it is the birthplace of the saint Vallabhacharya, the reformer and founder of the Vallabh Sect. Chitrakote Falls:

Teerathgarh Falls:

This mystic waterfall is a block designed fall, which appears to gush along a curvy slope wave after wave. The display picture certainly helps the imagine squall how the ambience would look or feel like. This single gush of water plunges 91 meters on the river surface, bouncing a series of pebbles and rocks. It’s calm and pleasant sound has a welcome feel to it and a spellbound effect to spectators.

This mesmerising waterfall is also known as milky fall for its white colour water formed as it gushes downward turning into pristine white colour. This time river Kanger occupies the claim for holding one of the best tourist spots to glance at the elegant fall and wander all day chipped in picnic and fun outdoor activities around the fall in the Kanger National Park.

Tamra Ghoomar Waterfalls:

Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary in the midst of Chhattisgarh is an ebbing and flowing province flaked with copious low and high hillocks well-forested area of the North-eastern corner of Raipur district. Kailash Gufa:

The restriction of movement is owing to non-availability of oxygen inside the two-kilometer deep caves. Kailash Cave was discovered in the year 1993. Situated on a small hill, the important feature of the cave is the musical sounds created on striking of hand in the hollow walls.

5. Maitri Bagh

The name Maitri Bagh means Garden of Friendship. This is a result of cooperation between Indian and Russian governments. Maitri Bagh was established by Bhilai Steel Plant. The zoo cum park offers various attractions and it is one of the famous picnic spots in the state. There are beautiful lakes and gardens and the musical fountains in the garden is a feast to eyes. It is the biggest zoo in Chhattisgarh.

6. Bastar Palace

Bastar Palace is an ancient construction built when the kings of Bastar shifted their capital to Jagdalpur. The palace is rich in architecture and it tells tales of bravery of the rulers who ruled the land. The unique carvings on the walls of the palace are stunning. The monument constructed by the government inside the grounds of the palace offers artifacts and portraits of the rulers of the past. 7. Kanker Palace

Known earlier as Radhanivas Bagicha, Kanker Palace was built in the 20th century and rebuilt in the year 1937. The elegant palace reveals the influence of colonial architecture. The magnificent construction is located in the scenic landscape and the lush gardens surrounding the palace is awe inspiring. The place and the palace offer great views and you will find various activities to get involved in right from boat safaris, jeep safaris and many more.

8. Gadiya Mountain

Once in Chhattisgarh, you would not want to miss the highest mountain in Kanker and that is Gadiya Mountain . Gadiya Mountain served as capital to King Dharma Dev of Kandra dynasty after his victory here. The cave found here was the hideout for the royal family during war. The southern part of the great mountain houses another cave, which is known as Jogi Gufa. This cave was used by sages to meditate. The water tank here is famous as it is said that it never dries.

9. Rajpuri Waterfall

Rajpuri Waterfall is located near Bagicha, which is 90km from the headquarters. The natural beauty of the place attracts tourists from all around. The entire place is enchanting with tribal villages around it. Mahant Ghasidas Samarak Sangrhalya, Raipur
