There are five living species of Rhinoceros. The two African species: the white rhinoceros and the black rhinoceros, and the three Asian species: the Indian rhinoceros, the Javan rhinoceros and the Sumatran rhinoceros.

The third largest mammals on land is the hippopotamus. These animals can weigh up to 2000 kg. The common hippopotamus lives near rivers, lakes and mangrove swamps. During the day, they remain cool by staying in the water or mud, at dusk they come out to graze on the grasses.

Elephants are undoubtedly the largest mammals and live in a very large group, which are led by the most experienced female in the group. They need around 200kg of food daily including grass, bamboo, nuts and fruit. They drink about 150 liters of water per day. What’s more, they also have a very strong sense of smell.

The tiger is the largest member of the "big cat" species, as they can weigh up to 350 kg. They usually hunt for food in the late afternoons or at night for larger prey like wild pigs, deer, and, at times, monkeys and even frogs. Tigers need to feed on up to 27 kilograms of meat in one night, but more often they consume up to 6 kilograms of meat during a meal.

Saratov was home to both a Lutheran parish and a Roman Catholic parish which served the ethnic Germans living in this city.

The Lutheran parish in Saratov was officially organized in 1793, although Pastor Ahlbaum was active in the city before then.

The Pope established the Diocese of Tiraspol, headquartered in Saratov on 3 July 1848. During its existence, there were five bishops:

Ferdinand Helanus Kahn (1850-1864) Franz Xavier Zottmann  (1872-1888) Anton Johann Zerr  (1889-1902) Eduard von der Ropp (1902-1903) Joseph Aloysius Kessler  (1904-1930)

This diocese went inactive in 1930 with the resignation of Bishop Kessler and officially vacant in 1933 when he died. It was formally "surpressed" in 2002 when the new Diocese of St. Clement in Saratov was established.

The Catholic parishners of Saratov built a wooden church which was consecrated in 1805. This building was used until 1880 when a new brick building was erected. The architect was M. N. Grudistova, and the new building was consecrated to St. Clement (St. Klemens in German) when it was completed in 1881. Today the structure serves as a movie theatre called "Pioneer."

In the post-Soviet era, the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church was founded in 2001 in Saratov. It is part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ingria (ELCI). There is a chapel in Saratov, and the pastor serving there is Olav Panchu.

There were three frontier garrisons founded to protect merchant ships traveling on the Volga River: Saratov (1584), Samara (1586), and Tsaritsyn (1589). Over the next century, the settlements were rebuilt on first one side of the Volga and then the other following a series of natural disasters.  The 1670 peasant revolt led by Stepan Razin also thwarted development of these cities.

Saratov was the first point of arrival for the German colonists and the location of the Kontora (Office of Immigrant Oversite) following the establishment of the colonies in the 1760's. From its beginning as a provincial outpost, Saratov grew to become a prosperous city and served as the center of industry for the Volga German colonists.

Chattanooga Zoo Hosts 8th Annual Ice Cream Safari On June 15th

On the evening of Saturday, June 15, the Chattanooga Zoo is hosting one of their classic summertime events - Ice Cream Safari.

Event admission includes unlimited ice cream and other sweets from local businesses, animal meet and greets featuring a variety of different species, interactive activities and games and full Zoo access.

Up-close giraffe feedings, a hands-on tie-dye shirt station, carousel rides and Zoo Choo train rides will also be available at an extra cost.

“Guests of all ages enjoy Ice Cream Safari, and our zoo keepers help make the event a really unique experience,” said Darde Long, president and CEO of the Chattanooga Zoo. “Keepers prepare special frozen treats for many of our animals to enjoy, making for a really fun, unique and educational day at the Zoo.”

The Zoo will close at 3 p.m. on June 15 to prepare for Ice Cream Safari, which is 4 to 7 p.m. As the event is ticketed separately from general admission, Zoo visitors who are also attending Ice Cream Safari will be asked to exit the Zoo at 3 p.m. and re-enter when the event starts.

Tickets for Ice Cream Safari must be purchased online. For Zoo members, tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for children ages three through twelve. For non-members, tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for children. Children two years old and younger are free for members and non-members.

V České republice se zubři chovají v zoologických zahradách a v soukromých chovech. V posledních dvaceti letech zde vznikly plochy s chovem zubrů na území mnoha desítek hektarů.

„25. května a 3. června se v našem stádě narodila mláďata zubrů. O obě mláďata vzorně pečují jejich matky,“ řekla zooložka Jitka Vokurková.

Zubří obora ve slovenských Topoľčiankách se už v roce 1959 stala po Polsku druhým největším chovatelem zubrů na světě. Právě z této obory v roce 1973 získala olomoucká zoo své první zubry.

„V roce 1986 jejich chov v olomoucké zahradě ustal. Jeho znovuvzkříšení se pojí až s rokem 2013, od té doby se narodilo sedmnáct mláďat,“ uvedla mluvčí Olomoucké zoo Iveta Gronská.

Domovinou zubra evropského byla Evropa a část Asie. Obýval lesní a lesostepní biotopy. Lov a devastace přirozeného prostředí ho však přivedly na hranici vymření.

„Zubr evropský byl počátkem 20. století v přírodě vyhuben. V té době se naštěstí nacházelo několik zvířat u soukromých chovatelů. V roce 1925, kdy započalo jednání o záchraně zubrů, zůstávalo naživu asi šedesát jedinců,“ poznamenala mluvčí.

Většina zubrů žije na svobodě

Mezinárodní chov v oborách a zoologických zahradách vyvrcholil v letech 1952 až 1966 návratem zubrů do volné přírody Bělověžského pralesa v Polsku.

„V roce 2016 celkový počet zubrů dosahoval již 6 573 jedinců, z toho 4 472 žilo ve volné přírodě. Největší stáda v současnosti žijí v Polsku v části Bělověžského pralesa. Zubr evropský je nejen přísně chráněným zvířetem, ale zasloužil se i o vytvoření první Mezinárodní plemenné knihy, která eviduje čistokrevná zvířata s případným využitím pro chov,“ řekla Gronská.

Zubři v Česku žijí také v bývalém vojenském prostoru v Milovicích, kam byla vypuštěna skupina zubrů, která se tam i rozmnožuje. Několik dalších lokalit se k vypuštění připravuje.

„Naši zubři jsou nížinně – kavkazské linie. Jejich repatriace je možná v Asii, ale s ohledem na politickou situaci to momentálně není reálné,“ uvedla zooložka.

Zubr je největším savcem Evropy a jeho samci dosahují hmotnosti až 920 kilogramů, samice o polovinu méně.

„Samice jsou březí zhruba devět měsíců. Za svůj život porodí asi devět telat. V zajetí se může jedinec dožít v průměru až šestadvaceti let,“ popsala Vokurková.

Zubři denně spořádají až šedesát kilogramů potravy. „Tu tvoří listí stromů a keřů, trávy a byliny. Jako ostatní velcí býložravci hraje i zubr zásadní roli v přírodních ekosystémech při udržování vysokého stupně různorodosti biotopů. Zubři upřednostňují pastvu na otevřených prostranstvích a podél lesních okrajů, kde likvidují náletové dřeviny a keře,“ podotkla zooložka.

Olomoucká zoo má po 27 letech opět zubry, v pátek přicestoval první, s návratem zubra evropského do přírody pomáhají i dva jihočeští vědci, premium 38 rohatých kolosů v matriarchátu. zubří stádo v ralsku se rozrostlo osminásobně, zbývající pár uprchlých zubrů se po týdnu vrátil do táborské zoo.

Medan Zoo Terima Bantuan Rp 1 M dari Rahmat Shah

Unit usaha Perusahaan Umum Daerah (PUD) Pembangunan Kota Medan, Medan Zoo, menerima bantuan sebesar Rp 1 miliar dari Ketua Umum Perhimpunan Kebun Binatang Se-Indonesia (PKBSI) Rahmat Shah. Bantuan tersebut bagian dari total Rp 5 miliar yang akan diberikan Rahmat ke Medan Zoo.

"Karena masih memperihatinkan, saya pribadi hari ini, akan menyumbangkan bantuan sebesar Rp 1 miliar. Nantinya secara bertahap akan menyusul juga bantuan dan lagi. Saya berkomitmen akan memberikan bantuan hingga Rp 5 miliar," kata Rahmat Shah usai menerima kunjungan Dirut PUD Pembangunan Kota Medan Ardian Surbakti di rumahnya, Rabu (5/6/2024).

Rahmat menilai jika Medan Zoo perlu ditata baik secara manajemen mampu perbaikan infrastruktur. Sebab menurutnya, Medan Zoo memiliki potensi yang bagus untuk dikembangkan lahan dan kontur tanahnya yang cocok untuk konservasi.

"Saya yakin Medan Zoo punya kelebihan. Pohon- pohon sudah banyak, lahan kontur nya itu sudah bagus, penghijauannya bagus, dan luasnya kalau Siantar mau diapakanpun luasnya 4 hektare, kalau Medan Zoo 30 hektare lebih itu sangat baik," ucapnya.

Terkait rencana penutupan sementara Medan Zoo untuk renovasi, Rahmat menilai hal itu tidak masalah. Sebab hal itu memudahkan pekerja untuk bekerja saat renovasi.

"Saya pikir gak salah kalau ditutup sementara untuk perbaikan. Karena beliau (Bobby Nasution) juga ada cerita sama saya, karena beliau ada tiga kali bertemu dengan saya. Di sana dia bahas ada rencana kerjasama dengan pihak Taman Safari, Rafi Ahmad dan lain-lain. Kalau ditutup satu sampai tiga bulan, kemudian ke depannya jadi lebih baik yang tidak masalah. Kalau perbaikan tetapi Medan Zoo tetap buka, para pekerja juga tidak leluasa karena alat alat bangunan atau alat berat keluar masuk," ujarnya.

Untuk itu, Rahmat meminta pengertian dari masyarakat, agar Medan Zoo ditutup untuk perbaikan. Hal itu demi kebaikan Medan Zoo ke depan.

"Kita mohon pengertiannya. Kalaupun ditutup satu sampai tiga bulan atau lebih tapi yakinlah setelah selesai kita akan melihatnya seperti mimpi," bebernya.

Sementara Ardian Surbakti menyebutkan bantuan Rp 1 miliar itu akan digunakan untuk membeli pakan hewan yang ada di Medan Zoo. Termasuk dengan perbaikan fisik yang akan dilakukan di Medan Zoo.

"Inilah anggaran ini nantinya akan kita belikan pakan beserta perbaikan fisik berupa kandang dan bangunan Medan Zoo lainnya," sebut Ardian Surbakti.

Terkait penutupan Medan Zoo, Ardian mengaku masih menunggu keputusan dari Wali Kota Medan Bobby Nasution. Pihaknya akan mengkaji jika sudah ada keputusan dari Bobby.

"Belum bisa dipastikan (Medan Zoo ditutup bulan ini). Kita pastinya menunggu perintah dari pak wali. Jika sudah ada perintah, maka akan saya kaji terlebih dahulu," ujarnya.

Ardian menjelaskan lebih sepakat jika Medan Zoo tetap dibuka meski ada perbaikan nantinya. Sehingga pihaknya dapat memperhatikan hewan yang ada di lokasi.

"Kalau saya pribadi inginnya untuk tidak di tutup. Namun tetap ada perbaikan. Karena keberlangsungan hidup satwa di Medan Zoo tetap harus diperhatikan," ucapnya.

Dirut yang baru dilantik akhir bulan lalu ini menuturkan akan melakukan penataan manajemen terlebih dahulu. Sehingga para investor lebih mempercayakan uangnya kepada Medan Zoo.

"Optimis satu bulan manajemen sudah membaik kemudian saya akan berkoordinasi dengan Pak Wali ke depan apa yang dilakukan. Apa menggali investor ataupun mencari dana dari mana dan lain-lain," tuturnya.

"Apapun yang terjadi para investor tidak akan mempercayakan dananya, jika manajemen tidak bagus, karena saat ini program sudah cukup banyak. Tapi kalau manajemen tidak solid sama saja," imbuhnya.
