Magical Mystery Tours has been booking destination vacations to locations all over the globe since 2009. Cost depends on the length of the trip, whether it’s international or domestic travel, and the kind of accommodations you want. Weekend trips for two start at $1,500.

In 2017, high-end travel company Black Tomato  debuted its  Get Lost service, which creates adventurous tailor-made expeditions to wilderness destinations like Mongolia or the Arctic that are kept entirely a secret from you. When you arrive at your location, you’ll be outfitted with all the gear you need, plus a private transfer from the airport to your starting point and a satellite phone for emergencies. Chart your way through a series of mapped-out checkpoints using navigational technology and your own two feet. The journey ends at a luxury retreat. Average Get Lost trips cost around $15,000 per person—but there are shorter, less expensive options, too.

Rustic Pathways

Designed for high school students looking for an exciting summer group trip, student-travel company Rustic Pathways offers a mystery trip to an unknown international destination. Before departure you’ll get a Patagonia duffel bag sent to you that’s filled with clues and a few essentials. Then arrive at the designated airport and spend the next two weeks exploring foreign cities and remote villages with other intrepid students as a guide leads the way. As of press time, there were still a few spots left on an upcoming trip in late June. It costs $5,995, not including airfare.

What if you got ready for a vacation and showed up at the airport with no idea where your plane was headed? That’s the idea behind a new type of travel agency that will plan surprise vacations for very adventurous travelers. At the airport, you’ll receive a destination and custom itinerary (usually based on a survey or interview to determine your travel style). The idea is that you leave the planning, details, and logistics to someone else, and just pack up and go. Here’s how to take a surprise vacation of a lifetime with the help of these 10 travel companies.

BlackTomato

If you’ve always wanted to test your survival skills, Bear Grylls-style, BlackTomato’s elaborate surprise adventure tours might be the next best thing. Choose between terrains like “Polar, Jungle, Desert, Mountain, and Coastal,” and BlackTomato’s experts will figure out a country to drop you in—with advice on how to train for your expedition beforehand. Then it’s up to you to navigate through a series of checkpoints (with BlackTomato ops teams watching from afar to make sure all is well).

Blind Experiences

Imagine a surprise honeymoon where stressed-out couples didn’t have to plan anything at all. That idea kickstarted the luxury travel agency Blind Experiences , which then expanded into putting together tailored itineraries for families with young kids and multi-generational groups— with more surprises gradually revealed throughout the trip via sealed envelopes

The surprise trip survey for Jubel begins by narrowing in on a country, continent or destination (beach or mountains?), then asks whether you’re more of a museum or nightlife person (you can pick both, for example). Jubel’s experts go from there to put together a proposal for you that’s just vague enough that your vacation is still a big surprise.

10 Trips Millennial Travelers Will Love

Magical Mystery Tours

The founders of Magical Mystery Tours started their surprise travel agency back in 2009, and they’ve planned many customized vacations since then. The questionnaire quizzes travelers on everything from whether seasickness is a concern to which places they’ve visited and absolutely loved.

Those are the types of trips that Pack Up & Go specializes in, and travelers have headed off to 125 U.S. cities for a fun and completely unexpected trip with a planned-out itinerary of activities and meals.

Spontaneous and courageous travelers are the ideal clients for SkipTown , an agency that will plan short surprise trips for you—even if you can only get away for one day. A “daycation” includes one night’s accommodation, one meal reservation, and one activity, all of which will be unexpected.

The 10 Best Group Travel Tour Companies for 2021

With Surprisit , you’ll find out your unique surprise destination a few days before your vacation begins (in case you need a bit of time for some Googling). The agency plans surprise trips in the Caribbean in addition to the U.S. and Canada, as well as a “ Eurotrip ” where you head off to a new European city every three days.

The Vacation Hunt

If you’re a beach person, but you still want a big surprise, The Vacation Hunt will set you up with an all-inclusive resort in the Caribbean, Mexico or Latin America. Other surprise destinations for this travel agency include a trip within Europe or the United States, or you can open it up to any destination in the world. Surprise honeymoons are a speciality for The Vacation Hunt as well.

Whisked Away

Leave the real-world behind for a while with Whisked Away , which will plan surprise week-long flying or driving trips. The idea is to make this the easiest vacation ever for honeymooners, solo vacationers, families, girls’ groups, or anyone who wants an out-of-the-ordinary experience.

Splurge trips, surprise vow renewals, solo adventures: Whym will plan a surprise vacation for all sorts of travelers. At the moment, the travel agency is only sending travelers out in the U.S.—and the surprises keep coming throughout the vacation, with blank spaces in your itinerary that are revealed gradually via “whymsies” text messages.

Srprs me: An honest review of destination unknown

There comes a time in everyone’s life when we want to do something spontaneous..

We all have different perspectives on what spontaneity is, but for those who love travel, a surprise trip to an unknown destination has certainly crossed your mind at least once.

Flying out to a secret destination raises so many questions: Is it worth the money? Is it safe? What do I pack? The questions go on, and for heavy planners and highly organised travellers, a surprise trip to an unknown destination might seem like your worse nightmare.

The saddening fact is that many people are disencouraged when considering a spontaneous trip away due to the uncertainty and endless questions, and with overtly positive social media posts, it can be difficult to gain an insight to the realities of a surprise trip.

So, here we are with all of your questions answered in an honest review of taking a surprise trip with Srprs.Me , written from the first-hand experience of someone who took a last minute solo trip to an unknown destination.

What is Srprs.Me?

Srprs.Me is an online website where you can book trips to a secret destination. You can either travel via a road trip or by flying, and you have as much control as you’d like.

You can opt for a complete surprise trip, to anywhere in Europe , or anywhere outside of Europe (if travelling for longer than a standard city break). This means that you’ll find out where you’ll be flying to at the airport around two hours before departure.

You have the option to control your trip as much as you like. You can opt for a surprise from selected destinations, remove destinations that you’ve already visited, and add your bucket list places. The world is your oyster!

But the fun is that you just don’t know where you’ll be travelling to, and you don’t need to worry about planning anything. The team at Srprs.Me will create a personalised trip to suit your preferences. It’s spontaneous, exciting, and even a bit nerve-wracking. But it’s definitely worth giving it a go at least once.

Srprs.Me Barcelona

Other surprise trip options

You may have heard of other surprise trip options. For example, the £99 holiday. Although this is still fun and spontaneous, you’ll usually find out the location a lot sooner. This helps you prepare, plan and pack. However, with Srprs.Me, the planning is completely out of your hands. You have no idea where you’ll be visiting until the very last minute.

What do you pack for destination unknown?

This is a question that gets asked a lot. If you don’t know where you’re going, how do you know what to pack?

With Srprs.Me, you will receive a notification around one week prior to your trip date. This will show the expected weather in the destination that you’re travelling to. Therefore, it’s possible to create a packing list based on the weather suggestions.

It’s certainly worth noting that weather can change, and you’ll benefit from packing additional items for the unexpected. For example, if the weather appears to be sunny, this can change. So, it’s worth packing a coat or jacket just in case.

The same goes with colder weather. Many Western European countries can be cool one day and hot the next, so keep this in mind in case the weather is hot while you visit.

Can you remove destinations that you’ve already visited?

When booking a surprise trip  with Srprs.Me, you’ll also have the option from many different themes.

One of the themes,  New Places , will allow you to submit several European cities that you have already visited. This way, you’ll be guaranteed to visit a new location.

You can also opt for other themes focused on specific factors such as food or weather, or even outside of Europe for a longer holiday.

Srprs.Me Themes

What is the accommodation like?

When booking a trip through Srprs.Me, you have the option to choose the standard of your accommodation.  You will be able to choose your accommodation from shared rooms (hostel), standard hotel, comfortable, or premium. The price will vary depending on your chosen accommodation.

All stays will be close enough to the city centre or main tourist attractions so that you can navigate around the area safely and easily.

Srprs.Me trip accommodation

Is a surprise trip worth the money?

Although Srprs.Me trips cater to many different budgets, it can get on the slightly pricier side if you’re hoping for a slightly longer stay, specific airports or high quality accommodation. Therefore, it’s understandable that people may not believe that it’s worth it.

Essentially, most people are paying for the novelty of travelling to a destination unknown. Although you may save some money if you book a destination yourself, you won’t have the excitement of not knowing where you’ll be visiting.

However, if you usually book your trips through a travel agent, it’s possible that the pricing will not be much different. Agencies tend to take fees from the booking cost – that’s how they stay in business! So, of course Srprs.Me will take a fee, but so will your typical travel agency. Therefore, is it worth it? Absolutely yes.

Srprs.me Review: The Day I Turned Up At The Airport And Had No Idea Where I was Flying

Beautiful views of Nice

Could you handle travelling to the airport with absolutely no idea of where you’re jetting off to? If you like spontaneity, find out all about my recent adventure with srprs.me !

I’m a seasoned traveller. I pack in 30 mins. I arrive at the airport just the right amount of time before a flight. I have playlists and TV shows ready for short haul flights. I have eye masks and travel pillows for long haul. I’ve almost mastered the art of relaxed travel.

So what happens when all control is relinquished? Well, last month I booked a weekend trip with Srprs.me . It’s a novelty concept where you pay a standard rate that covers flights and a hotel. The only thing is, you don’t find out where you’re going until you’re at the airport.

You might be thinking this sounds like a nightmare… how on earth do you know what to pack? BUT… It’s actually surprisingly liberating. So let me outline a little more of how the concept works…

When you book your trip you can choose between a backpacking option or a city break. I went for a 3 day/2 night city break. I then chose between Europe or Mediterranean Europe. Craving a bit of October sunshine, I went for the Med. Then it asked for three destinations I didn’t want to visit… so I popped down a few I’d visited recently. I selected approximate flight times, preferred airport, and that was it. My fate was in their hands!

A week before travelling we received the weather forecast via our online booking page. It updated daily, so by the night before (when I was packing) I had a fairly good idea of the temperatures and weather conditions to expect. The Srprs.me team posted out a special envelope with a scratch card in, which I was instructed to take with me to the airport.

Srprs.me weather forecast

As the week before ticked on I went from feeling excited one minute, to nervous the next. I packed not knowing if it was going to be a place I’d be trekking around, lazing on a beach or mingling in glam surroundings!

I arrived at Heathrow Airport at 7am on Friday morning and met my friend Kristina who was joining for this mini adventure. We joked about all the random things we’d packed, and then got on with business.

The srprs.me adventure begins

I took out the scratch card, scratched off a code, and input it to the website. The page loaded… You’re off to Nice!

We both whooped, jabbered excitedly about how neither of us had ever visited, and couldn’t believe what a lovely break lay ahead! We received plane tickets and hotel confirmation on email (for a lovely 4 star hotel in the centre), and gallivanted off through security. A few hours later we landed in Nice, keen to start exploring.

Despite being mid-October, Autumn hadn’t hit yet and the south of France was still enjoying beautifully warm and sunny days. As we landed over the seafront, I could see why this part of the world was called the Cote D’Azur – all the blues!

There’s something pretty magical about the spontaneity of arriving somewhere without a plan. I’m big on planning, usually researching minute details of how to get to the best viewpoints, top restaurants and finding those hidden gems that nobody knows about, but there was a new feeling of liberation about this trip.

So, with just three days exploring the city, what did we do? And did the spirit of surprise and spontaneity stay with us for the adventure?

Top Things To Do In Nice, France

Explore parc de la colline du chateau.

After learning our destination, I quickly posted on Facebook and Twitter for recommendations, and walking up Castle Hill came top. As we climbed the steps, the views of Nice’s city and beach areas got better and better. Also at the top was a beautiful waterfall which I’d definitely recommend checking out.

Colline Du Chateau

Walk The Promenade Des Anglais

Nice is a great city to explore on foot. It’s relatively flat, and there are plenty of photogenic places to see. A wander along the Promenade Des Anglais was a highlight for me. The walkway goes right along the seafront for several kilometres, passing beach clubs, smart restaurants and sunbathing spots. I loved the rows of iconic blue chairs lining the route. The Cote D’Azur couldn’t get much bluer!

Get Lost In Nice’s Old Town

Vieux Nice is a labyrinth of skinny streets and tall colourful buildings adorned with rustic shutters. It is super pretty, and whether you fancy exploring the cute boutiques and restaurants, or just getting lost, it’s definitely a place to add to your list.

Nice's pretty old town

One of the highlights for me was Fenocchio – a famous ice cream store in Place Rossetti. With over 90 flavours on offer, you’ll find all the standards plus plenty of intriguing options including beer, olive, violet, chocolate and ginger and mojito. I  also loved Cours Saleya – a large street market with stripy awnings selling fresh produce, regional specialities (including lavender and colourful soaps) and lots of beautiful flowers.

Check Out Nice’s Port

While many will stick to the main stretch along Promenade Des Anglais, take a trip to the port to see the boats. It’s a little less touristy than the main part of the city, and there are some excellent restaurants moments from the water. Top marks goes to La Vigna – a high quality restaurant with a very reasonable (and delicious!) 3-course set menu for 29.95 EUR.

Nice Port

Drink In Nice’s Most Iconic Hotel

When we passed Le Negresco Hotel in our taxi on the way to Nice, we knew we just had to visit. With its beautiful domed roof, illuminated letters and a colourful statue of Louis Armstrong outside, it had a circus-like appeal. We stopped by for a drink in the bar one evening, and sipped on pricey cocktails (23 EUR a drink) while listing to live music. It had that old-fashioned French feel… really atmospheric! We managed to squeeze in a little snoop around the downstairs of the hotel too – with its treasure trove of artworks adorning the walls.

Relax On The Beach

I was so surprised to visit Nice in mid-October and find it was still sunbathing and swimming weather. With temperatures around 23 degrees, the beaches weren’t heaving, but there were still plenty of people enjoying the sunshine. The beaches in Nice are pebbly, so if you’re considering a visit, splash out on a sun lounger at a beach club, or take a soft towel.

Take A Day Trip To…. Monaco

And finally, it seems the spontaneous theme of my trip made a big impression. On Sunday morning I woke up and said to Kristina, “How do you fancy doing something crazy?” She looked nervous, and asked if it involved bungee jumping. “No, but I’ve just seen Monaco is only a 25 minute train ride away… we could go for lunch?”

And off we went to the train station. We bought return tickets for under 8 EUR (bargain!) and spent the afternoon checking out Monaco’s most famous sights. We stepped foot inside the Casino de Monte-Carlo, gawped at the supercars lining the streets, checked out the yachts in the marina and watched cars take on the world’s most famous hairpin bend. It was fun to see the glitz and glam for ourselves, and it’s fair to say, we definitely made the most of our time away.

Exploring Monaco

As travel becomes simpler, easier to plan and a bigger part of our lives, it’s exhilarating to shake things up. I loved the surprise element of this trip, and the feeling of spontaneity it added to our time away.

srprs.me offer surprise destination city breaks across Europe for 3, 4 or 5 days currently priced from £130 per person. Visit srprs.me to book.

Big thanks to Srprs.me for inviting me on this trip. I genuinely love the service, the excitement and what the company offers, so all words are my own! If you have any questions, let me know!

Surprise Trips Are More Popular Than Ever—Here’s What It’s Like When a Stranger Plans Your Vacation

Surprise Trips Are More Popular Than Ever—Here’s What It’s Like When a Stranger Plans Your Vacation

AFAR went on a surprise road trip to Newport and saw historical landmarks like The Breakers.

After I zipped up my weekend bag and put my shoes on, I eagerly ripped open the envelope that read, “Warning: No Peeking Until the Day of Your Departure!” The envelope had arrived on Tuesday, but through sheer force of will, I had managed to keep its contents—the destination of a weekend getaway planned by Pack Up and Go , a surprise travel agency—a secret until the moment I was ready to depart on Saturday.

I pulled out a thick piece of card stock that read, “You’re going to Newport, Rhode Island!” in big teal letters. And with that, I added the envelope—which also contained a pre-planned itinerary—to my bag and headed off on a road trip to the coastal New England city.

At AFAR, we’ve been big fans of surprise trips for a long time. Ever since our first issue in fall 2009, we’ve been sending writers like Alton Brown and Charmaine Craig to destinations such as New Zealand and Lisbon with just 24 hours’ notice in our “ Spin the Globe ” feature. Surprise travel has become a full-blown trend in recent years as more companies start to offer these trip-planning services.

In fact, Pinterest discovered that searches for “Surprise Destination” increased 192 percent in the last six months of 2018, beating out other popular travel terms like “Hot Springs” and “Autumn Scenery.” The desire to be more spontaneous appears to be at the root of this trend. In their 2018 Travel Trends Report , Ford Motor Company found that 52 percent of U.S. travelers said they enjoy getting lost and spontaneously discovering hidden restaurants and shops to create unique memories when they travel.

Exploring Newport in a 2018 Ford Mustang

Exploring Newport in a 2018 Ford Mustang

I’m the kind of traveler who finds great joy in researching destinations and poring over guidebooks months in advance of my trips, but when Pack Up and Go and Ford offered to let me borrow a 2018 Ford Mustang for a three-day surprise road trip, I jumped at the opportunity. As a travel editor, whenever I take off with my friends or family, I tend to handle most of the reservations and research. But sometimes, it’s nice to let someone else do the planning. For group travel it can be hard to pick one destination that checks all the boxes for your group.

But that doesn’t mean Pack Up and Go picks a place at random and sends you there. When I booked the trip, I took a short survey that asked me about the last few places I had been and where I was planning to go next (to make sure they wouldn’t send me on a repeat trip), and details about the kind of traveler I was. Do I prefer museums to shopping? A quiet night in or one out on the town?

Other than that, all I knew before I left were a few vague details. The trip would be in a midsize city within a four-hour drive of my home in New York (Pack Up and Go also plans air and train trips within three to four hours of your home for people without access to cars). I also received a weather report a week before departing. While the details I was given eliminated larger cities farther away like Boston and Washington, D.C., my mind swirled with the possibilities.

Technically, there was nothing stopping me from ripping open that envelope the second it arrived, but the secret was half the fun. The week before I left, my friends all sent me their destination guesses. Some thought Philadelphia, others were convinced it was either Baltimore or Annapolis, while exactly one friend guessed Newport correctly.

Pack Up and Go had also printed out directions to and from Newport’s Mill Street Inn , where they had booked me for two nights. The Mustang I borrowed was kitted out with Wi-Fi and Apple CarPlay, which made it easy to listen to my own music and get directions at the same time—without burning through my entire data plan.

No trip to Newport is complete without sunset drinks at Castle Hill Inn.

No trip to Newport is complete without sunset drinks at Castle Hill Inn.

In addition to providing suggestions for things to do once I arrived in Newport, Pack Up and Go also gave me conveniently timed suggestions for places to stop for lunch along the way (I never would have happened upon the SoNo Baking Co. in South Norwalk, Connecticut, otherwise). It was also nice to get off the highway and into Narragansett—home to one of the best beaches in Rhode Island —for a quick detour. When I arrived in Newport, I found the Mill Street Inn to be a bit understated for my tastes. But after waking up the next morning, I realized it was in the most peacefully quiet location while also being within a short walk or drive of other recommendations like the White Horse Tavern, Cliff Walk , and Castle Hill Inn . I can deal with beige decor for an undisturbed night of sleep and convenience any day. While Pack Up and Go’s suggestions were spot-on, Instagram was another trove of information for the spontaneous trip. I got brunch recommendations from a friend’s wife who had gone to high school in Newport, and also found out that a past colleague’s brother ran the Midtown Oyster Bar on Thames Street. So while I was enjoying a glass of sancerre and a half-dozen local oysters, chef James Mitchell gave me tips for where to find affordable lobster rolls ( Anthony’s Seafood , just a 10-minute drive away in Middletown) and the best place to drink a pint next to locals ( Pour Judgement on Broadway).

How to plan your own surprise trip

Pack Up and Go offers two-night, three-day surprise trips starting at $400. But Magical Mystery Tours , Surprise Me Trips , and the Vacation Hunt also offer these kinds of trip-planning services. If you’re confident in your trip-planning skills, you can also surprise a family member, friend, or significant other with a trip (FYI, Valentine’s Day falls right before the long Presidents’ Day weekend this year).

You can take one of two approaches: To build anticipation—and give your travel partner a little bit of a warning—pick a weekend that you’re both free and drop hints in the weeks leading up to it with details about the weather and any special gear to pack. Then when you get to the airport or load up your car’s GPS, reveal the secret destination. If your travel partner really enjoys being spontaneous, you can also secretly clear his or her schedule ahead of time and pack their bag for an even bigger surprise the day you depart.

Desperate to travel anywhere? Mystery trips will make it happen

Ready for a surprise? © Hello World/Getty Images

Mystery trips - where you pay an agency to organize your vacation and don’t find out the destination until the last minute - have been a niche section of the travel industry for a number of years. With travel gradually returning to some countries, they’re betting on people wanting to shake up their routine and embrace spontaneity after many months of staying at home.

Lonely Planet reader Markus Wittich from Germany is a very frequent traveler, racking up 18 trips in 2019 alone. After more than a year of staying at home, the idea of holiday where he doesn't know the destination is extra-appealing to him right now.

“That Groundhog Day feeling is real! We've been stuck at home for over a year and it feels like every day has been kind of the same. Since there haven't been many - or any - pleasant surprises throughout the pandemic, a surprise trip could be a fun idea to visit places that haven't been on your radar before.”

Teenagers sitting on a city wall hidden by city map

For river cruise company Uniworld, that bet is already paying off. A 10-day Mystery River Cruise in June quickly sold out and a September voyage is on the horizon. CEO Ellen Bettridge confirmed to Lonely Planet the original idea actually came from their customers.

“Our guests communicated that they’re willing to travel anywhere to get back out there and explore the world again as vaccines began rolling out and the light at the end of the tunnel finally neared. We created the Mystery Cruise with that sentiment in mind, to spoil our guests and provide them with a surprise trip of a lifetime with all details and decisions taken care of.”

But after so long being careful, are travelers ready to hand over the reins to someone else, especially when safety is still such a top priority? A quick poll of Lonely Planet readers revealed a mixed bag; 21% said they would be more likely to take a mystery trip now but 27% of people said they would be less likely, expressing concerns of safety or the possibility of being exposed to COVID variants despite being vaccinated. But others were tempted by the novelty. Rachel Van Raan-Welch, a reader from New York City is torn.

“I LOVE the idea of a mystery trip, and especially after being more or less on lockdown for the past year, I'm totally up for traveling anywhere right now. But that's in a hypothetical world in which COVID suddenly totally disappeared. In reality, it's hard to know when ‘after the pandemic’ may be. I wouldn't be comfortable taking a trip without knowing where I'm going or what I'm doing, and I think I'll probably feel that way for a long time.”

Safety and reassurance are priorities of any travel company right now and established surprise travel agencies have been quietly changing up their offerings. Netherlands-based Srprs.me expanded their themed vacation packages to include self-guided road trips in 2020. As travel slowly returns to Europe, spokesperson Anneke told Lonely Planet that road trips remain the top choice for their customers.

“We only send our travelers to safe destinations, so there's no need to stay updated on the travel advice to decide where to go; we do that for them. I think that people definitely still have an appetite for the mystery [and] spontaneous element, but under the current circumstances they prefer the more 'safer mysteries', such as our road trips closer to home.”

Daughter covering father's eyes on a playground

Of course, there’s another big reason why many seasoned travelers want to try out a mystery trip and it has nothing to do with the pandemic. “I sometimes plan out my trips too much by researching all the restaurants, museums and sights that I absolutely want to visit,” Markus says. “This can sometimes eliminate the opportunity to being spontaneous. Not knowing the destination before you arrive at the airport forces you to keep an open mind and to go with the flow.”

“Please sign me up!” he adds.

From the moment we booked with Journee

From the moment we booked with Journee, we knew we were in good hands. The customer service was exceptional. Highly recommend!

No regrets with our Journee trip!

Jen and I have been friends for over 20 years and between the two of us have traveled to 40 countries. When we learned about Journee we knew it was an adventure we wanted to experience. Every step through the entire process was smooth. Filling out the questionnaire and receiving our proposal was exciting. Receiving the hints and trying to guess where we were off to. The trip was amazing and having the opportunity to experience the beautiful country of Slovenia, one that hadn’t even been on our radars, was really a fulfilling, exciting and unexpected trip! We’d definitely book another trip with Journee!

The Perfect Holiday!

We couldn't have planned a better holiday, even if we'd spent months trying to. In every way it was perfect! Everything went smoothly: from our boarding passes to the accommodation and excursions. All of our likes were catered for: ancient history, nature, food and new amazing experiences. This was our second holiday with Journee and we will definitely be booking a third! Thank you to everyone at Journee for the most wonderful week!

Birthday trip of my dreams!

I have always wanted to try a solo trip, but I have been always a little too much of a scaredy cat. For my 40th, I wanted to embrace having more of a main character energy, and I am so glad I booked with Journee. The trip was more than I could have ever asked for, and I am already dreaming of my next one. Don’t hesitate—take the leap and embrace the surprise.

SO much fun! Would book again!

We (my husband and I) absolutely LOVED our surprise trip with Journee! We were looking for a fun and exciting trip to go on for our honeymoon/1-year anniversary. I found Journee on social media back in early September 2023 and was intrigued by the surprise aspect and liked that the major parts of the trip (flights, accommodation, and activities) were pre-planned for you. I was NOT disappointed in the slightest. We had an incredible time in the destination they sent us and thoroughly enjoyed the 5 adventures that were booked for us! Everything went very smoothly and we could tell Journee put a lot of time and effort into planning the trip for us which we really appreciated. We upgraded to the premium accommodation and thought the hotel that we stayed in was perfect and had everything we needed and more. We really liked how Journee also included a destination guide as well as suggestions for places to see/things to do and where to eat/drink (for different meal types) which really helped us to fill our free time on the trip with even more fun and enjoyable activities and delicious food. Overall, I highly recommend anyone to book with Journee for an amazing adventure!

Absolutely amazing!!

Absolutely amazing!!! So glad I found you. This is something I’ve always wanted to do but didn’t know existed. I can’t explain how well planned everything was and how much information you are given to help you get the very best out of your trip. It really is so helpful. The communication from the moment we booked with you to the moment we got home has been incredible!! The whole experience was so stress free, there was nothing we needed to worry about. We were so pleased with where we were sent and our excursion was so much fun!! I will recommend this to anyone who will listen because WOW!! Thank you for giving me and my husband a nice new yearly tradition. Cannot wait to book again for next year. Or maybe sooner 👀. You’ve made a tired Mum and Dad so excited to explore life again, thank you JOURNEE !!!!!!!

Well planned much needed adventure

I needed to get away and did not want the hassles of planning a trip, so I put my trust in Journee to do the planning for me and it could not have worked out any better. The location was perfect for me and the accommodations were better than expected with excellent service. The adventures were wonderful and I got to meet the coolest people on my trip Throw yourself to the world and go on an amazing adventure with Journee leading the way. you won't go wrong

the most magical experience of my life

I was a tad unsure when I went into the process of letting Journee surprise me with a mystery vacation...but the process was quick, the questions felt meaningful and the proposal they sent my way just sounded too good to be true. And yet somehow the trip itself wound up being even better than I could have ever imagined. Suddenly I found myself in Turkey, seeing beautiful sights, meeting the kindest people and eating some of the most amazing food I've ever had the pleasure to partake in. Everything about my Journee to Turkey was absolute magic...I'm so eager to take another Journee I'm already looking at the calendar to plan another.

The trip was absolutely amazing

The trip was absolutely amazing! The Accommodation was so clean and beautiful right in the middle of the action. It was a perfect time a year to go. We were able to get reservations to places. I think if it were high season that could have been difficult. The excursion to the countryside was my favorite part of the trip.

A perfect surprise break

My fiancé and I booked a weekend away through Journee, and couldn't be happier with the result. The trip showed us that they had really listened and understood what we wanted from a holiday, and no corners were cut which made it feel very bespoke. We had the perfect balance of excitement at an unknown location, zero stress from having to do any planning ourselves, wonderful excursions that suited us perfectly and plenty of free time to explore the beautiful city of Porto. Thank you so much Journee, have already recommended you to all of our more adventurous friends!

Highly recommend!

Highly recommend using Journee! Me and my sister decided to do this after someone recommended it to us. The clues kept us guessing and the trip was very well organised. It was such a nice change already having recommended things to do and great places to eat. Anna did a fantastic job! We’re planning on doing it again for sure.

Journee a route to where?

Journee a route to where? bit sceptic at first having everything arranged for you and not knowing where you will end up but Journee cover everything! always on hand if you need anything and a first class service that I would thoroughly recommend to anyone considering it! we had a long weekend away in the South of France with some incredible trips and a wonderful hotel many thanks to all @ Journee!

Let The World Surprise You!

If you're thinking about doing this, just do it. The journey they had planned for us was so great we did not wait to even get back before asking them to send us another journee proposal. I don't want to give any spoilers away but, we dared to let the world surprise us, and we cannot wait to do it again!!

Recommended to everyone we know!

Journee made everything an absolute breeze and let us experience things we never would have done on our own! Have recommended this experience to pretty much everyone we know. They also responded to every query we had within minutes. My only feedback is that every communication we had was from "journee" - it would be nice to have a name to thank for our trip!

There was nothing bad about my trip!

There was nothing bad about my trip!! The whole thing was wonderful. The excursions were great, the guides were knowledgeable and friendly and very accommodating. I enjoyed the hotels and their locations.

Exciting travel, simplified and stress-free

An amazing experience all round. Wonderful staff happy to help via WhatsApp with any queries, questions or worries we had. The accommodations were wonderful and the the experiences booked were fantastic. We couldn't believe that they managed to go under budget. And everything was done for us so it was completely stress-free and the mystery of our destination was so exciting. 10/10 would recommend. EVERY adventurer must do this at some point in their life!

This took me out of my comfort zone!

I really went out of my comfort zone booking with Journee! I am a meticulous planner whenever I go somewhere new. I had to relinquish control over the trip, which was something I had to get used to, but I am glad I did! If I would have made the plans, I’m sure I could have saved some money, but I don’t think I would have thought to go so far out of town to do it. I would have missed out on some of the most impressive experiences that were curated by Journee! All in all a great trip! I can’t wait to be surprised on my next trip😝

Birthday Trip with Journee!!

My mom, grandma and I took a girls trip with Journee and loved it!! It was great to have it planned by Journee because they know all the things to do and places to see. We had INCREDIBLE hosts!!! We had Journee book transport from the airport for us, it’s extra but it is worth it!! My only complaint about the trip would be it was challenging logistically to figure out transport to places, my google maps weren’t always accurate. Other than that we had a grand time and will use Journee again!

A brilliant idea and so well executed

A brilliant idea and so well executed. The clues, the secrets, the itinerary and the ease of following it all was brilliant. We had the best most stress free holiday ever in a place I’d not really heard of! Perfect.

My Journee trip was the perfect balance…

My Journee trip was the perfect balance between organised activities/tours and time to wander, explore, and do whatever. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute! I loved receiving the clues, sharing them with friends and family and trying to guess the destination - some of the guesses were wild! 😂 (I guessed one of my destinations) Being a boss and always in charge of my life, I loved handing over the reins to Journee (tell me what to pack!), and the mystery, excitement, and anticipation prior to departure. All in all, it was a wonderful experience, and I would do it again. Thank you! P.S. If you’re hesitant about travelling solo, a Journee trip is a great way to do it.

Srprs me surprise holidays: What are they and how do they work?

February 16, 2023 | Posted in: Random

Gifting experiences, not things, is one of the best ways to show your favorite people you care about them. And you know what's even better than making someone happy with a present? Making them happy with a present you can enjoy too. Like a surprise holiday by Srprs me, for example.

If you're feeling uninspired by popular holiday destinations and don't have the time to scroll through endless flight and hotel options, Srprs me gives you the perfect opportunity to mix things up a little. You can book a holiday, they take care of all the details and guess what…the destination is a complete surprise!

Does a surprise holiday sound like something you could get on board with? In this post, we'll cover what the Srprs me concept entails, how to book with the company, and where you can travel to with this special service. Ready to learn more? Let's dive in.

Booking a surprise holiday with Srprs me

surprise holiday

In 2014, Srprs me launched their concept of the surprise trip. The concept entails that, after having entered a few criteria, you book a trip to a surprise destination. Before your surprise vacation starts, you receive just one tip that allows you to guess where you're going

how it works

You get the chance to choose the theme of your trip and select a few Srprs me destinations that interest you. When you start to go through the process of booking your trip, you can choose from:

how does srprs me work

  • One of your bucket list destinations
  • A new place you have never been
  • One of 15 city break destinations where you rule out 5
  • A sunny escape
  • A foodie escape
  • A multi-city trip

what type of trips does srprs me offer

You will also get to choose if you prefer a trip by plane or on land. There's even a jokey option to choose a rocket as your method of transport! Spoiler: when you select this option, you get sent to a form asking for your email address. They promise they will let you know as soon as rocket trips are an option on the platform!

What's included with a Srprs me trip?

You may be wondering what exactly a Srprs me trip includes before you get into the details of booking it.

The price of your trip covers:

  • Flights to and from your destination + 1 piece of hand luggage
  • If you choose a road trip, transportation by road
  • All nights in the accommodation
  • All organisation and logistics
  • Tips for things to do and places to see on your trip

inclusions for srprs me

Once you're in your destination, you'll need to pay for your airport transfers, all food and drink and whatever activities you want to do on your trip. If you take a road trip, parking isn't covered. The accommodation standard depends on the type of accommodation you select when booking, which is in the step below.

How much does a holiday with Srprs me cost?

Prices for Srprs me trips vary on how far you travel, how many nights you stay, the level of accomodation you pick and the number of people traveling.

The lowest price is 120 EUR for a roadtrip and prices go up to as much as 800 EUR if you opt for a multi-city trip.

The maximum trip length is 14 days and the minimum 3 days.

Is the cost of a trip with Srprs me worth it?

You may be wondering why you would book your trip through this website and not do it yourself. The main benefit (apart from the gimmic of it surprise element) is that you don't have to worry about any of the organisation or logistics. Everything is taken care of by the experts on the Srprs me team. The company also has connections in the travel industry which means they have access to the best rates and great deals.

It seems you can get value for what you spend when you book a Srprs me trip. Of course, it depends on the time of year you travel. For example, in Europe in summer the prices will be higher.

But overall, the trips aren't expensive in comparison to market rates and you'll always stay at a hotel that is rated at least 8 on independant review sites. You can guarantee you'll stay at a vetted hotel that has reviews from previous Srprs me travelers. The hotels the team chooses are always clean, comfy and centrally located – even if you choose the budget option.

The team use their expertise to seek out only the best experiences and use feedback from their users to continuously make improvements to the service.

You also only fly with safe and reputable airlines if you choose a trip by air.

Steps for booking your surprise holiday with Srprs me

Srprs me surprise holidays: What are they and how do they work? 1

Now you know a bit more about what this service entails, let's take a look at the specific process for booking your surprise holiday:

1. Enter the criteria for your surprise destination vacation

When you book a surprise getaway with Srprs me, you basically book a surprise city break by plane or road. If you choose a road trip the destination will be between 1 and 4 hours from your home.

You indicate how many people you'll be traveling with, when you want to leave, for how long you want to be gone, and whether you want to visit a city inside or outside Europe.

The booking screen looks like this:

booking with srprs.me

In this example, the bucket list option from above was chosen. If you want to book a bucket list trip, you tell the search box at least three cities you'd love to go to.

Another thing you can choose at this initial stage is which airport you want to depart from and what kind of accommodation you'd like to stay at, you get to choose from the following options:

  • shared: a shared room at a hostel
  • standard: a simple hotel, B&B or apartment
  • comfort: a more comfortable apartment, hotel or B&B
  • premium: a superior room in a luxury hotel

Regardless of the type of accommodation you choose, Srprs me makes sure you only stay at places that are rated an 8 out of 10 or higher on independent review sites.

All the criteria you select affect what the cost of your surprise trip will be.

Another option you have when booking a surprise city trip is that you can give Srprs me a maximum of three destinations to exclude. These can be places you've already visited or places you have no interest in going to.

The final step in the booking process is to select your departure dates. The calendar will show you which dates have availability that match your chosen criteria.

2. Prepare for takeoff

srprs me reviews

Don't worry, Srprs me looks after you.

A month before your departure day, you'll learn what time you need to be at the airport. That way, you can already plan how to get there. If you download the Srprs me app via the magical link sent to your email, you get to see your personal timeline which shows you a countdown to your trip.

The personal timeline also shows you when you'll get other information, such as the kind of hand luggage you can take with you and if you need any vaccines, Srprs me will tell your doctor about your destination so they can tell you what you need.

A week before your trip, you get the weather forecast for your destination so you can pack accordingly. Both the time you need to be at the airport as the weather forecast can be seen as clues to unravel your mystery vacation but you won't know for certain where you're going until your departure day.

A week before that day, you'll receive a scratch card which holds a code that reveals your destination. However, that code only works when your personal count-down clock on the Srprs me website (or app if you use it) has completely counted down – which is at the time you need to be at the airport. Then and only then can the big surprise trip reveal take place. It's the moment your personal timeline on the app has been leading up to.

sprsme

The scratch card comes with all the information you need in regards to your flight and if it's possible to check in beforehand, Srprs me will do that for you.

3. Explore and enjoy

surprise holiday ideas

The app is very handy to have here, as all the tips and recommendation from the Srprs me travel planning team are in one place. You can also use the app to add photos with captions and make a little diary of your trip.

And if anything should somehow go wrong, you can contact the 24/7 srprs.me emergency line.

4. Share your feedback

After your trip, you can share your feedback with srprs.me. They love hearing how it went and will ask you for your comments. Your feedback helps them improve the trips for future Srprs me guests.

You can! Have a look at the srprs.me website , follow the process I described above and await your first clue.

Journee Trips Review: Is It Legit?

This page may contain  affiliate links which earn us a commission at no extra cost to you to support the site. Thank you!

Have you ever come across videos online of people going on mystery trips? They open a sealed envelope at the airport, no idea where they’re going, to reveal their mystery destination. Well, I did just that !

A few years ago, I went on my first surprise holiday . And it was such a fun experience, I was ready for another mystery trip. This time around, I let Journee sweep me away to yet another unknown destination. I had no idea where I was going until a few hours before my plane left. Journee booked my flights, accommodation, and activities and kept me on my toes for weeks until the departure day was finally there.

If you’re wondering whether going on a surprise trip is something you’d like to consider, I’m here to share my experience.

Spoiler alert: it was a lot of fun!

journee packs

How does a surprise trip with Journee work?

Before I go into more details about my own trip, I’ll explain a bit more about how you can book a mystery trip with Journee. They make the whole process a lot of fun!

1. Fill out the matchmaking form

Instead of sending you to a random place, Journee wants to match you with the perfect mystery destination. That’s why the process starts by filling out a matchmaking form. It only takes 10–15 minutes and asks you about your preferred travel style, things you like to do, things you’d rather not do and more.

The form is incredibly detailed and I really appreciated the options they give you. For example, you can select what activities you’re not comfortable with (including boat trips, swimming, scuba diving and wine tasting), and they also ask if you have any fears/phobias.

You can also add your budget here. There is a minimum of £425 per person for a 4-day trip, but you can make it as expensive as you like. Journee will make sure everything (flights, accommodation and activities) will fit within the number you give them.

It shows that they want to create an unforgettable trip for anybody, no matter their preferences or budget.

journee matchmaker form

2. Receive a trip proposal (& book your trip)

Once you’ve filled out the form, it’s time for Journee to get to work. Their team will take a look at our answers and put a trip proposal together. You’ll receive this in your inbox the next day .

Obviously, Journee specialises in mystery trips, so you won’t find the destination in this proposal. However, they will include the dates of your trip along with a few hints. Definitely not enough to guess the destination, but it’ll definitely get you started!

If you like what you see, you can decide to book the trip. You can also ask them to make changes if anything stands out to you that you don’t like. There’s no obligation to book a trip. So, even if you’re just curious, you can fill out the form without having to book anything.

3. Receive your clues

Your trip is booked and the countdown is on! This part is one of the things that really stood out to me – Journee doesn’t just make the trip exciting, they make the build-up to the trip just as much fun.

Leading up to your departure date, Journee will send you clues about your destination and trip via WhatsApp. Eight to be precise. And all of them bring you closer to guessing it while also completely throwing you off. I was so sure about a destination before receiving another clue which totally didn’t match it… Back to the drawing board, it is.

I also got my friends and family involved in the guessing game. “Have you received any more clues???” was a common text I received in the weeks leading up to my trip. It was so much fun and even though I told them NOT to tell me their guesses (I wanted it to be a surprise after all), seeing them get so involved made it an even more unique experience – especially since it was a solo trip.

4. Receive your packing list & weather report

One common question I received online after posting about my upcoming surprise trip was “but how do you know what to pack?”. Luckily, Journee came up with the perfect solution while keeping the destination a secret.

A few weeks before your departure date, you’ll receive a packing list and a weather report . This way, you know exactly what to bring. The weather report even updates daily, so you won’t be caught off guard by a sudden change in the weather.

You’ll also receive a physical pack in the post a few days before you leave. In it, you’ll find two closed envelopes. One includes the destination reveal card and the other includes Journee’s destination guide (which includes your itinerary and a ton of extra information about your destination – super handy since you’ve not been able to research anything beforehand!). Obviously, don’t open these until you get to the airport!

journee weather report

5. Time to pack

And then it’s suddenly time to pack already. With the packing list and weather report, this was very easy. I did bring a few extra outfits, just in case. But since I was only going for 4 days, this was no problem.

Then it’s time to get down to the airport. Journee will tell you the time your flight will leave and from which airport. Make sure not to check the airport departure screen before opening your mystery destination envelope though!

6. Open your mystery destination envelope at the airport

On the day of your mystery trip, it’s time to get to the airport. Journee will let you know the time of your flight, so you have enough time to get there. They take care of checking you in, and you can find your boarding passes on your online Journee Passport.

All that’s left to do is open your envelope and find out where you’re going! I recorded a video opening mine, so if you want to see my reaction, you can check it out here .

7. Follow Journee’s itinerary during your mystery trip

After opening the mystery destination reveal envelope, you can open the other one. In it, you’ll find a booklet with lots of information about your destination along with a tailor-made itinerary. This includes where you’ll be staying, how to get there and what you’ll be doing during your trip.

I won’t go into detail about my exact itinerary here, because I wouldn’t want to spoil it if you also get matched with the same city on your Journee trip. But I will say that it included a lot of amazing experiences, some of which I’ll never forget.

Journee review: my surprise trip with Journee

After Journee contacted me to see if I’d be interested in working together, I already couldn’t wait to go on a trip with them. I love planning trips, but when it’s part of your job, it can get a little tiring. Plus, the idea of actually finding out AT the airport seemed so much fun.

I’ve been on a surprise holiday with ATO Tours a few years ago (to Lisbon , which was an incredible experience). ATO Tours gave me the option to find out where I was going seven days before the trip. This worked out really well because it gave me time to prepare and read up on the destination – especially since I was going to be writing about it! But I always what it would be like to not know until a couple of hours before you’re jetting off .

Obviously, with Journee, you can also find out where you’re going in advance by opening the destination envelope. This is totally up to you! If you want to do some research before your trip, do so by all means. I just wanted to see what it’d be like to really not know.

Before my mystery trip

After filling out the trip matchmaking form on Journee’s website, I was sent a trip proposal. And while it did include a few clues, it was still way too early to find out where they were planning to send me. This did start the guessing game for me and my friends (and family, friends of family and family of friends). Where will I be going?

Over the next few weeks, Journee sent out some clues via WhatsApp . Every time I saw the notification popped up, I rushed to open it. This was very, very exciting.

The clues were great too. Not too vague, but vague enough to leave unsure about what it could be. But there were options – so. many. options . And with every new clue, I was thrown off completely. When I was sure it was going to be Pisa, the next clue didn’t line up with that destination and we’d be back to square one. The same thing happened when I received the weather report and packing list. This made things even more confusing (but exciting!).

While some of my friends turned into research mode, cross-checking clues, forty clicks deep into Wikipedia articles, and having heavy discussions at the dinner table, I decided not to Google anything. I want it to be a surprise, after all.

But the clues were a fun addition that kept me super excited in the weeks leading up to the trip. It made the whole experience feel like so much more than just the trip. It was an adventure that lasted weeks.

And then the morning of my flight arrived. I was giddy. When I got to the airport, I was feeling a healthy amount of nerves, but mainly excitement. In a couple of hours, I’d be on the plane to God knows where (well, Journee knew, and I was about to find out too). Then, it was time to open the envelope…

Spoiler alert: the mystery destination turned out to be Krakow, Poland!

They really couldn’t have picked a better destination for me . I love cities, I love history and culture, and I hadn’t been to Poland before. Also, Krakow had been on my wishlist for ages, but so have many other European cities. I have no idea how long it would’ve taken me to actually book a trip there, so this was the perfect opportunity to explore a new city!

During my mystery trip

As you probably can tell from my itineraries on this site, I love a bit of travel planning. So going to an unknown destination was a little scary. Luckily, Journee’s guide to Krakow helped me a lot. They also sent me a Google Maps with points of interest and restaurants they recommend.

All of this saved me so much research! On top of that, they planned my itinerary perfectly with some amazing excursions. They made sure I had enough free time to explore the city, and with their tips, I was able to fill the time properly.

Obviously, I did immediately Google “things to do in Krakow” and “Krakow itinerary” to find what other bloggers had to say about the destination. But even just Journee’s booklet would’ve been more than enough.

The accommodation Journee picked for me was beautiful . Right in the centre of the Old Town of Krakow, making it very easy to go out and explore. Also, the excursions booked for me included hotel pick up and drop off, so I didn’t have to worry about anything.

Journee was available to me on WhatsApp during my entire trip, and they reached out to me while in Krakow to make sure everything was going okay. I felt very taken care of , which is definitely a plus when you’re going somewhere new (and on your own!).

My mystery trip to Krakow is something I’ll never forget. I’m so glad I was finally able to visit this city, and with all the extra tips from Journee, it was better than I could’ve imagined.

If mystery trips are something you’ve always wanted to do, Journee is definitely a company to check out. I’m very impressed by all the care they’ve put into my trip, all the information and clues they’ve given me throughout the whole process, and the quality of everything included in my trip. Highly recommend!

Journee Mystery Trip FAQ

If you have any other questions regarding the mystery trip with Journee, please comment below and I’ll add them to this list!

How much does a surprise holiday with Journee cost?

When booking a mystery trip with Journee, you can set your own budget. There is a minimum, however, which is £425 per person for a 4-day trip. But you can make it as expensive as you wish!

How do I know what to pack?

Packing for a mystery trip is tough. But Journee does everything they can to make it easier for you (without revealing the destination and itinerary!). A few weeks before your trip, they’ll send you a packing list and the weather forecast. The weather forecast even updates daily the closer you get to your departure date. This way, you’ll know exactly what kind of clothes to bring to be comfortable.

What if I don’t want to go to a specific place?

When filling out the Matchmaking form, there is a place to add destinations you don’t want to visit. You can add as many as you like. When I filled out the form, I knew I wanted to go somewhere new, so I added a ton of countries and cities I’d already visited. This allowed Journee to match me with the perfect new destination.

When will I find out my mystery destination?

Journee sends you the reveal postcard and trip pack (including your itinerary and a booklet with information about your destination) seven days before you leave for your trip. You can choose whenever you want to open it – however, it definitely adds a bit of excitement when you open it AT the airport!

Second time using Srprs.me and had another incredible holiday

Second time we've been on a trip through Srprs.me, and once again it was awesome. We were sent on a wonderful trip to Sicily a few years back and this time tried the road trip option. We were set off on a journey to an incredible UK manor house in the countryside with a michelin starred restaurant on site. Absolutely brilliant, made even better by the surprise factor. Well definitely do it again!

Fun experience

Everything was sorted for me so I didn't have to worry about anything. Not knowing where I was going made the trip really exciting. When the time came to reveal the location, I was really happy to find out I was going to Madrid. It was the perfect location and I felt really safe there as a solo traveller. Sprs.me told me everything I needed to know in plenty of time. It was a really fun experience and I would recommend it.

Reply from srprs.me

Hi India, Thank you for your review. Amazing to hear that you had a great time during your srprs.trip! Madrid is a really pretty city, right. We would love to surprise you again in the future! :)

My experience with sprs.me was far from satisfactory. Due to a bug on their website, I was booked into a city we explicitly did not want to go to. A substandard hotel at an inflated price of 200 euros, while the actual cost on the same day was less than 60 euros. The recommendations provided were useless, and customer service, an AI-generated response, offered no resolution. Beware of using sprs.me.

Another great surprise!

Recently returned from a trip which found us in...Krakow, Poland. Delighted with the destination. Hotel perfect for our needs (slightly out of centre, but a brisk walk, or Tier electric scooters, soon got us into the main square). Easy bus trip from airport. My daughter and I just love these surprise trips - as everyone else says, there is no endless planning or the stress of making sure you choose the 'perfect' destination. The countdown is so exciting! (Tip if you have an early flight from from Gatwick - YotelAir is a reasonably priced, rather quirky hotel within the airport; we revealed our destination whilst still in our room). Boarding cards etc came by email rather than on the app, which I hadn't spotted, but this was very quickly sorted by the person on the emergency helpline. Surprise Me never disappoints. Well done again, srprsme! Definitely will do it again.

We absolutely loved our experience.

We absolutely loved our experience - it's definitely nerve-wracking but felt the perfect time to do it after not travelling for so long because of COVID, we didn't really feel picky about where we went. We got Bologna, which neither of us had done before. The hotel was so central and really lovely. We didn't rely much on the information they gave us for the city, just did our own googling. The only thing I would say is I wished you could get the boarding passes slightly earlier than bang on the countdown timer when you're at the airport. It was a bit of a faff because our phone signal was bad, we couldn't download them properly and then had to phone up in a bit of a rush to get them resent. But they helped us really quickly with resending so it was no bother.

Always an excellent experience

I have just returned from my 5th srprs.me trip and once again, loved it! The destination was great and the hotel was amazing. Pedro put up with my many anxiety driven emails about flight times and terminal questions and was quick at replying and very helpful. They even put the reveal time 30 mins earlier because I was so anxious about getting to the right terminal in time! (Of course, I had plenty of time in the first place!) Can't wait to go on my 6th!

Brilliant service!

I recently had a problem with a gift voucher - I emailed the customer service team and Merel & Laura were both super helpful in getting everything sorted for me! Brilliant service and I can't wait for my holiday next year - thank you :)

Epic UK Road trip

Uk road trip organised by the team. Lovely hotel, they even sorted me out a breakfast as part of the deal. great updates and customer service from the team. Lots of fun. This is my second trip with srprs.me (I did a European city break pre-covid) and I had the same great experience. Highly recommend them for people who love a surprise

This was a present for us

This was a present for us. Flight/Destination/Hotel quality was in line with expectations. It might be a bit tiresome to find your way in a surprise city; but it was manageable. The hotel was really nice with clean rooms and great breakfast. Very good price/performance!

Surprised at check out

Hotel and location as we asked for and we enjoyed the stay, but the payment to the hotel by srprs.me was not completed at the time of check out. After not being able to contact the agency (not even with their emergency number) at the moment of check out we’ve payed the 200 euro for the stay ourselves, where we already had payed 360 euro in front to srprs.me for the same stay. I guess mistakes are there to be made but after 3 weeks and several contacts we still haven’t seen any refund yet.. We really were excited by the ‘location revealing concept’ but unfortunately this will be our first and last booking with the agency.

Thank you for the reply. We are happy to read that you have enjoyed your stay at the destination! We understand that this wasn't the manner in which you would have liked to experience your trip. However, we do hope that your journey has been a pleasant one and are happy to create a new srprs.trip for you in the future!

Loved every moment of it!

We loved our experience with suprs me. The surprise element took the stress out of the holiday and they were easy to contact - everything was very clear. We ended up in Barcelona and our hotel was right in the centre of everything. They even upgraded us for a better view! Flights were a great time and all went very smoothly. Would definitely boom through suprs me again.

Booked a trip in the UK with our pet - terrible experience

Booked a trip in the UK with our pet. Sent to a city centre (And it was one of the places we listed that we DIDN'T want to go to). Hotel charged us for the pet despite us already paying the extra to srprs.me, they did refund us in the end but was extra hassle contacting them to get it sorted out. The cost of this trip was £300, the hotel actually cost them £180 as we were given the bill on checking out due to the mess up over the pet charge. AVOID - all they do is book a room and then 'surprise' you with the destination on the app and charge a grossly inflated price, they literally do nothing else. Honestly just ask a friend to book you a trip and not tell you where you are going until the day before, you'll get much better value and won't be sent somewhere you asked not to go to!

Date of experience : 17 February 2023

Hi Jennie, Thank you for taking your time to share your feedback with us! We find it very unfortunate that you are dissatisfied with your srprs.trip. We have searched with a lot of passion and enthusiasm for your destination and accommodation. We have already contacted you about the price. The price of your srprs.trip was based on the average price of the available accommodations at the time of booking. In the end you pay for the total package and for the trip that is taken over by a travel organization. Unfortunately, you had to pay for the dog, but we already talked to you about the issue and offered a refund. We still hope that you had a nice time in Birmingham! Kind regards, srprs.me

Happy srprs-tripper!

I've booked multiple srprs-trips over the past 4 years, being happy with each and every one of them. What I like most is being able to book without the hassle of choosing a destination, place to stay, searching for plane-tickets, ... You do pay for their efforts of course: I'm sure you could go to the same places on a lower budget when you do it all yourself. But hey, where's the surprise in that?! On the last trip there was a minor problem with my airplane-tickets, but it was solved immediately after contacting srprs.me - even on a saturday! Places where I stayed (mostly hostels, sometimes a standard hotel) were clean, friendly services, easy to reach from the airport, on walking distance from the city itself. Got surprised by the locations they sent me to, especially on the last few trips. Although they aren't always the cities I would choose on my own (of course that is the whole concept of srprs-trips), I had a good time. I would definitely recommend booking a trip with them!

Hi Stefanie, Awesome to hear that you are a srprs.traveller for the last 4 years!! We always make sure we will send you to a new destination. There is so much to explore! Glad to hear that you got in contact with us to address this matter. We want to be informed by our travellers if something doesn't work out or if there are any issues along the trip. Hope we can send you soon on a new srprs.trips! Kind regards, srprs.me

Very very bad experience

Very very bad experience. I booked a trip 1,5 years ago. It was cancelled because of Covid19 so they proposed me to receive a voucher or a refund. After postposing my trip many times, I asked for a refund because the situation was really unsure. 2 months later, it's still IMPOSSIBLE to get my money back (we are talking about more than 500 euros!!). They promise, they make me wait, they thank me for my patience, they give me deadlines ("you can be sure you'll have your money on the 4th of june"). 15th of june, I send another email because I have NO NEWS and they ask me my number account.... Result : I'm still waiting for my money and I'm absolutely furious. Don't trust this company !!!

Very great experience

Very great experience! I booked 2 trips, 2 weeks in a row. The first trip was on my own and the second with my boyfriend, both 4 days. At first I couldn't see both trips in the app at the same time, but when I emailed the problem was solved very fast! I had no problems on both trips, and had a blast at both locations.

Budapest, Hungary October 2021.

After seeing an article about the concept of a mystery holiday destination awhile ago, I was intrigued but apprehensive to try it out given that I tend to be a bit OCD and overzealous when it comes to planning my holidays. This comes from watching my folks research flights, car hires, accomodation, things to do etc weeks in advance of our trips to Thailand. Surely this is the only way to truly travel, right? Because the devil is in the details and we need all the details upfront in order to be in control and have a good time, right? Wrong. I'm so glad I took a leap of faith and booked myself a trip with Srprs Me. I had accidentally booked the trip thinking that the £10.00 off voucher for signing up to their newsletter would automatically apply, but when it didn't they were extremely understanding and helpful and refunded me the amount. I loved the crazy looks people would give me when I'd say I was going on holiday and have no idea where to. 'How will you know what to pack? How will you know what to do? What if you get sent somewhere dodgy? What if you're sent to a real life version of that Hostel movie?' These, and more, are the questions that people constantly asked me and each time I would say that I have confidence in the company and look forward to making a go of it on my own. They would just go quiet then say 'it sounds good, but I don't know if it's for me.' To this, I say, it is for you and for your mate, your work colleague, your sister, anyone and everyone! Once I got to Gatwick, I will admit my heart was thumping a bit when the countdown reached zero and I finally found out where I was going; Budapest, Hungary! Special mention to Merel for arranging everything, I had so many additional things without having to pay extra for like Speedy Boarding with EasyJet, a buffet breakfast included at the hotel etc. Thank you so much for such an amazing trip! My one small gripe is that I wish I had been given a little nudge to pack a swimming costume, as this isn't a normal thing to do in October as we're heading into single digits and Winter Woolies. Being a slightly larger individual, I wasn't able to find a costume in my size at the local stores so I wasn't able to make use of the thermal spas that Budapest is known for.

A fantastic trip to Berlin!

We loved our srprs.me holiday! The concept is really quirky and exciting and we had a fantastic time in Berlin. The app worked really smoothly and the excitement of the big reveal was really good! Once we had our travel details - I was worried about the luggage allowances and aspects like that - but they had booked us the bonus luggage in case and priority boarding which made the whole process smooth. The hotel in Berlin was a Hampton by Hilton and was fantastic - really clean, modern, and everyone was very nice. We were originally booked in a twin room (possibly by accident) but the hotel quickly fixed it so we got a double. The main things I would add to the experience if I could would be more detail on getting from the airport to the hotel - they sent a couple of pages with some tips on Berlin, but no airport transfer or guidance on what train lines to take and things like that. It was pretty confusing trying to find a way there without just getting an expensive taxi - so some detail in the welcome pack would be great. Due to Covid - quite a few attractions needed bookings three or four days in advance so I think having an option of a surprise activity that would have been booked for us - perhaps as part of the questionnaire ask us about things we like to do and give an optional bonus for an activity - that would have been great. Berlin is great for cycling around and it's easy to hire bikes, but it would be good to have helmets - I wonder if you could connect with a hotel to have helmets available? Finally, I think a bit more detail in the welcome details would be great - the flights and hotel were very clear, but some more guidance on Covid rules for example and more detail on things to do in Berlin would be amazing. We had an amazing time and figured it out - but it was a rushed first day researching things to do and finding out it was all booked out so needing to keep looking. Overall, a wonderful experience - the surprise was great and is a real talking point with friends. Much more than your usual holiday.

Not worth the wait, hype, money or effort unfortunately

After purchasing vouchers pre covid for Xmas gifts for all the family we were recently shocked that only half of them were still valid after the bogof vouchers had some sort of get out clause. That said myself and my partner booked our second child free trip in 15 years with ours for last weekend. With the current travel situation we thought it best to stay in the UK. We selected rural and city to.give us a woder variety. We used our £100 vouchers (without the extra £100 bogof ones that we no lomger valid) and also paid an extra £170 to upgrade our trip to something better than standard. We were sent to a village in Cumbria. This was a little disappointing as it is relatively close to where we live but even so we're looking forward to a little luxury get away. Upon arriving it became apparent we were in a property that had been found via booking.com for much less thab we had paid. The property was ridiculously small. It was cold and only had plug in radiators, no extra blankets etc. No blinds/ curtains downstairs so every car that passed could see right in which was even worse as the bathroom was downstairs too. The stairs were more of a ladder and were that steep ypu had to go down with your feet side on and hold on the hand rail and floor above to prevent slipping. The only seating available was 2 wire chairs or the bed. To make it worse the floor upstairs and stairs/ ladder creaked terribly and as we could hear the family through the wall felt that we had to creep around the whole weekend.. The icing on the cake was when we witnessed the local hunt in the field at the end of the lane on Saturday morning, killing numerous birds. We have waited for past 2 years for this trip and we actually came home first thing Sunday as this was a waste of time, effort and money. Not worth the money or the hype. Worried for my family who we bought vouchers for too! Very disappointed unfortunately....

TESTIMONIALS

What People are Saying...

Each stop was so well thought out, perfectly timed, and so much fun. Like the rest of the world, my wife and I have been stuck inside during the pandemic, but Guess Where Trips introduced us to some hidden gems, and reminded us of how much fun it is to get out and discover new spots (and took away the stress of planning!). It was the perfect getaway. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

OMG! I did the Funky Florals trip yesterday with my mom and some friend and wow! The spots were absolutely amazing. The first stop was my favourite. If that was the only one it still would have been worth it! The rapids are insane! Doing the surprise trip next weekend and cannot wait! Thank you! Can't wait to see what's coming for the winter.

I cannot thank you enough for this! We went on our adventures trip and it exceeded our expectations! My kids were very excited to open the envelopes after each stop to see where we were going next. I took my mom as well, and she enjoyed every minute of it. The third stop was stunning! We stayed at the patio of the vineyard and enjoyed the beautiful view while we ate and sipped on some wine. Oh and the donkey sanctuary...cutest thing ever. Today has been one of the most memorable days yet!

My mom turns 60 this week and she always says she doesn't 'NEED' anything. So, I decided to get her a Guess Where Trip so that she could spend an entire day with her family doing something fun. She LOVED it!!! She said it was such a great idea and wants to go on another one with me ASAP! Thanks so much for an amazing day!

Ah! I just have to let you guys know, you're amazing at putting together fantastic road trips! We started out on the Hops & History tour, and ended up in the CUTEST beach town (you guys weren't lying).

Went on our third Guess Where Trips today, and like the others, it exceeded our expectations! Never know where we are headed until the day we go on our trip. Very well planned out road trips. They have taken me to many places I've never been to.

Not to be dramatic, but I went on one of your trips last weekend and it was the best day of my life.

My girlfriend and I went on your Weird and Wonderful trip on Saturday and we just wanted to say that it was such an amazing experience! From the moment we opened our first envelope it was clear that your team is dedicated to creating a very memorable experience for each of the stops! My girlfriend and I want to say thank you for helping us create some amazing memories and can't wait to do more trips in the future!

Absolutely LOVED our surprise adventure from @guesswheretrips! We visited so many beautiful and interesting places that we never would have stopped at otherwise. Also, the roadside food stops were 10/10. I highly recommend checking them out if you're looking for an amazing action-packed day!

Travel essential app

Love this app! It is a must if you want to make the most of your stay or if you’re looking for a next trip. It inspires you to explore the world and advices you what to visit. Looks very neat and cool! Keep up the good work, I’d love to enjoy this app even more
This app is ridiculous. I would use more colorful language about how bad and unusable this app is but it would probably be deleted. Narrators voice and accent is terrible. Does not highlight major works of art at the Prado museum, and gives you no direction on how to find the rooms or art in the Prado. We turned it off after 5 minutes and wandered the museum on our own. We should have bought the museum audio tour.
We are very sorry to hear you had a bag experience with us. We already updated this tour to fix the narrator's voice and add more clear directions. We are ready to provide you a refund if our [email protected] care didn't make it yet, please contact us on [email protected]. We have a lot of tours in Europe and the US with a native speaker as narrators, for now, please come back and try a few. We would like to give you free access to new tours, please drop us a line to [email protected] if you would like to try.

Pack Up + Go Review: Are These Surprise Trips Really Worth It?

Pack Up + Go Review: Are These Surprise Trips Really Worth It?

Surprise Trips may seem daunting to some, but it's definitely a new and adventurous way to travel and explore new places. Learn how Pack Up + Go takes your preferences and sends you off to your next amazing destination, tailored just for you.

surprise me trips reviews

Everyone has a different idea of a ‘perfect vacation’, but it’s safe to say that wherever you are as long as you’re relaxing and having fun, you'll feel like you’re in paradise.

We all hope for a great holiday but the stress of planning, driving, and organizing the trip is sometimes enough to make you drop your plans. With so many places to see and so little holiday time, it can be very hard to pick the perfect location and itinerary. But what if you could hire someone else to do all these things for you?

That's where Pack Up + Go comes in. Here's how they could help plan your entire trip from start to finish.

Going on spontaneous trips with friends.

What Is Pack Up + Go?

Launched in January 2016, Pack Up +  Go is a travel agency that offers you a spontaneous 3-day vacation trip from anywhere around the USA. Pack Up + Go lets you pick the location where you want to leave from, your budget, and how you want to travel. However, your destination is a  surprise .

The trip they plan for you will be based on your preferences. You can choose what experiences you like such as road trips, spas, food tours, etc. and they will curate an adventure based on the information you provided.

If you’re in a spontaneous and adventurous mood, you can leave all of the preferences blank and let them do all the planning for you.

pack up and go logo.

What is Included in Pack Up + Go?

Pack  Up + Go saves you time by helping you plan your travel and giving you sweet surprises along the way. Pack Up + Go includes several plans and options for all kinds of travelers. Travelers are given a price list option for their overall trip.

You can book a trip for as low as $450 or $5,000 per person. There are also more intricately designed trips if you’re willing to spend more money. You can also choose which transportation to use for the trip (airplane, train, car).

Seven days before your departure date, the company will send you an email about your destination. It will tell you the weather, the recommended items and clothes to pack (bathing suit vs. hiking gears), luggage size restrictions, and everything you may need to know about your trip —except for the location.

Since the travel app is such a hit with many young travelers, it’s wise to book your trip in advance. The site also requires you to book at least 4 weeks in advance, so that might be something you to take into consideration.

Advantages of Pack Up + Go

The element of surprise .

Because what's more thrilling and adventurous when you have no clue where you're going for your trip? Although not for everyone, we definitely feel like this could be a great way to enjoy new experiences and explore the unknown.

Before your trip, the Pack Up + Go team will give you all the necessary details to prepare for your trip. But they will make you wait to open the envelope which reveals your destination only until you arrive at the airport. The company does an excellent job focusing on creating mysteries throughout your vacation.

If you like surprises, then booking a trip with Pack Up + Go is perfect for you!

Your Preferences Still Matter

Don't worry about being sent to the middle of nowhere. Pack Up + Go won't just throw you a random destination, the services will try their best to match the mystery destination based on the preferences you pick on their travel survey.

The company will create an itinerary that’s customized for you. The survey is composed of travel style questions that will help the staff at Pack Up + Go find you the best travel destination match for your taste. They will also ask you which places you’ve recently visited and which you intend to. The company will not send you to these places so that your destination will be full of firsts!

Made For All Travelers

No matter your age,  your gender, or your budget —Pack  Up + Go has a passionate team that curates unforgettable vacations for each traveler. They even sift through their client’s social media accounts to understand their interests. All of the activities are fun but not too crazy. It’s the perfect mix of spontaneity and mystery.

Whether you’re a solo backpacker, a couple on an adventure, or just a group of friends wanting to make good memories, there’s no boring time during your 3-day escapade!

Disadvantages of Pack Up + Go

Cover-more countries .

Pack  Up + Go currently only lets you travel within the U.S. So if you want to travel to cities abroad, this isn’t the service for you.

Adventures and new experiences on surprise trips with Pack up and Go.

Is Pack  Up + Go Worth It?

Sure, perfectly planned trips are amazing. But who doesn’t want a bit of spontaneity sometimes? Does the thought of waking up in a strange city thrill you? If so, Pack Up + Go might just be the service you need.

If you love mind-blowing surprise trips and thrilling adventures, we highly recommended you try it out. Each vacation is unique and different. It feels like handmade art designed by people who truly love travel. I think it’s truly something anyone will appreciate.

Team srprs.me hebben t supergoed geregeld! Top!

Alles super goed geregeld.

We waren positief verrast!!

Ongelofelijk

Onze eerste surprise me ervaring!

Groetjes, srprs.me

Verassend heet in zo’n plastic bal !

Genoten zonder zorgen !

Perfect om als koppel van te genieten !
