2020 Yamaha Bolt/R-Spec

Fun and affordable old-school cool.

yamaha cruise bike

On its website, Yamaha tags the Bolt as an “urban performance bobber,” and it certainly wears some of the hallmarks of the category with its minimal bodywork, compact chassis, and old-school tech, but the Bolt will appeal to almost any rider thanks to its friendly manners and torquey V-twin power. Yamaha’s (nee Star) midsize cruiser was introduced in 2013 and hasn’t changed much since then, soldering on with a fuel-injected, 942cc, air-cooled, SOHC V-twin engine and a spartan, no-fuss vibe. The more premium R-Spec model one-ups the base model with the addition of twin piggyback reservoir shocks, 12-spoke cast alloy wheels, and more in-depth paint options, but both offer a modern LED taillight and an LCD instrument cluster to bring a little high tech to the otherwise bare-bones feel.

Related: DYNO VIDEO: 2016 Star Bolt C-Spec

Its low saddle and compact feel will likely call out to shorter beginner and intermediate riders, though the Bolt can more than handle advanced pilots as well. A $7,999 buy-in is a pretty good motivator, and the better-equipped R-Spec model costs just $400 more.

2020 Yamaha Bolt Reviews, Comparisons, And Competition

The Bolt regularly makes “best cruiser value ” lists because of its no-nonsense style, accessibility, as well as affordability, though its obvious competition, like Harley-Davidson ’s Iron 883 and Triumph’s Street Twin models, offer a similarly stripped-down vibe and customizable platform at a reasonable price.

Yamaha Bolt Updates For 2020

The Yamaha Bolt hasn’t had many updates at all since its launch in 2013, so changes to the 2020 model are exactly nil; in fact, even the price is unchanged.

About Our Selections

Cruisers are some of the most iconic motorcycles ever made. They’re instantly recognizable thanks to their relaxed riding position, wide handlebars, and comfortable seats. Originally designed for munching miles on big, open roads, the cruiser is the definitive American motorcycle . Now choosing the best, yikes, that is a seriously challenging task when trying to keep the list to just 10.

While most cruisers take their inspiration directly from the big American-made cruisers from the early to mid-20th century, modern interpretations are straying from that path. In order for us here at MBW to narrow the list to ten, some sort of consensus around what makes a cruiser a cruiser needed to be solved. It is 2023 people, we all need boundaries, right? I like it simple, I understand simple, so the simple criteria are, low seat, relaxed riding position, big power, and little to no fairing. Fairings are for touring bikes , yeah I said it! Cruiser riders need extra wind in the face. Lean angle, that means little, cruisers know they will scrape some hard bits.

We’ve seen all kinds of cruisers hit the streets over the past 100 years, so we’ve put together a list of some of our favorites. Here are the 10 best cruisers ever made…that the average rider can easily go and buy. For those models that are not available new in 2023, we will take their last known MSRP and bring it up to 2023 dollars.

These motorcycles were picked for multiple reasons, namely their popularity, price to performance, and overall opinion about the bikes, all of which start or started at less than $10,000

Yamaha Virago

Yamaha's first american cruiser, a mainstay in the memory of many that rode them before the model line ended in 2007.

yamaha cruise bike

Why We Picked It:

The first cruiser motorcycle for Yamaha, the Virago name is a legend. One of our contributors admitted they were being biased thanks to a fond memory of sitting behind their father as a 13-year-old and watching the speedo, over his shoulder, climb past 100 mph.

Through the 80s and 90s the Virago could be had with anything from a 125cc to 1100cc engine. The 750, 1000, and 1100 models had the right look and a heavy dose of chrome, mixed with a level of performance that was not to be found in an American V-Twin. The 1100 Virago was good for more than 60hp and only about 540lbs to move . Using a shaft drive to send the power to the back tire, the Virago was more than happy to stretch your arms with a full twist of the throttle.

Thanks to Yamaha’s build quality, many Virago’s can still be found cruising the streets.

Specifications:

Price: $3,499 in 2007 ($5,077 in 2023)

Engine: 125cc to 1,100cc V-Twin

Power: 12 to 60 HP

Torque: 6.6 to 62.7 lbs-ft

Transmission: 5 Speed Manual

Curb Weight: 306 to 540 lbs

The first American-style cruiser from Yamaha, introduced in 1981 with the final model being produced in 2007

Highlights:

A wide variety of engines for every rider type

Led to the development of the VStar line of cruisers that succeeded them

Many are still on the road due to excellent build quality

Honda Shadow

An undisputed cruiser that set its own path through history, separate from its honda brothers.

yamaha cruise bike

For many cruiser purists, things like the Honda Valkyrie and Gold Wing aren’t traditional cruisers. Instead, some consider them to be touring bikes only. So, we decided to add an indisputable Honda cruiser into the mix: this is the Honda Shadow.

The first Shadows first rolled onto the scene in 1983, and since then the line has evolved to accommodate a wide range of engine sizes and variations, from 125cc learner bikes to larger mile-munching 1,100 cc steeds, with Spirit, Aero, Phantom, and RS trims available historically.

If we had to choose a Honda Shadow model that really showcased the best that the range has to offer, we’d choose the most recent edition: the Honda Shadow Phantom. The latest Shadow Phantom is a smooth rider, with plenty of grunt for highway cruising, but in a steady and confidence-inspiring package. Featuring a blacked-out 745cc V-twin, 44.9 horsepower, 47.9 lb-ft of torque , the Shadow has the right mix of attitude, reliability, and fun to provide thrills to beginners and experienced hands alike.

Price: $7,899 (2020 Shadow Phantom)

Engine: 125cc to 1,100cc

Power: 15 to 62 HP

Torque: 7.7 to 72 lbs-ft

Curb Weight: 319 to 553 lbs

Being the friendliest beginner bike for those wanting a cruiser before Honda's introduction of the Rebel model line

Multiple engines to choose from, although 125cc model was mostly for Europe and Asia

Set apart from the rest of Honda's models by being unashamedly influenced by American cruisers

Still on sale 40 years after its introduction

Kawasaki Vulcan 900

A cruiser that never converted to imperial, proudly standing at the vanguard of "metric cruisers".

yamaha cruise bike

Next up, we have another metric cruiser. This time it’s the Kawasaki Vulcan. The Vulcan series isn’t at all new. In fact, it has been around since 1984! The first Vulcan, known as the VN700A, was quite the thing when it rolled onto the scene. It had a beefy Japanese V-twin engine, and an unusual shaft drive! It is considered one of the best beginner cruisers ever made.

Over the years, the Vulcan has been available in a number of displacements, styles, and times, ranging from little 125cc run-arounds to heavy-duty 2,000cc goliaths. Today, the Vulcan aficionados can choose from the futuristic Vulcan S, bagger-esque 1700 Vaquero, and touring-friendly 1700 Voyager. But our favorite model has to be the Vulcan 900, and its awesome Custom variant .

Boasting a potent 903cc 54-degree V-twin engine that shoots out a hearty 50 horsepower and 58 lb-ft of torque , the Vulcan offers enough grunt to satisfy most riders. However, it’s the looks that give the Vulcan the real edge. It’s got wide drag bars, parallel slash-cut exhaust pipes, a low-slung saddle, and a very cool retro vibe. It’s an awesome cruiser that takes elements of traditional design and manages to fuse it with modern features without jarring the eye.

Price: $8,499 (2022 Vulcan 900 Classic)

Engine: 903cc V-twin

Power: 50 HP

Torque: 58 lbs-ft

Curb Weight: 619.6 lbs

Being a very forgiving, easy to ride metric cruiser that first appeared in 2006 and has become a fast favorite of many newer riders

Engine size has stayed the same the entire way through, 903cc, from 2006 to now

Despite its weight, it's quite agile for a cruiser

Has a large aftermarket catalogue, to put everything from drag bars to saddlebags on the bike

2021 Kawasaki Vulcan 900 specs, features, & pics

2023 Kawasaki Vulcan 900

These cruisers were picked for their historical significance, features, and for a couple, just being outright badass bikes that were between $10,000 and $20,000 when new

Indian Chief

Oner of the most iconic cruisers ever made, having gone through several iterations and evolutions.

yamaha cruise bike

The Indian Chief is arguably one of the most iconic cruiser motorcycles ever made. The first Chief models were made by the Hendee Manufacturing Company in 1922 before the company rebranded itself as the legendary Indian Motorcycle Company. It was continuous production from ’22 right up to the brand’s demise in 1953. However, Indian was revived in 1999, and once again in 2006. And today, the Indian Chief lives on.

Early examples of the original Chief are hard to come by and highly collectible. However, for those who want a taste of that good-old-fashioned American heritage, modern interpretations are readily available, with impressive specs too.

The modern 2022 Indian Chief Bobber uses Indian’s Thunderstroke 116 engine. It’s a 1,901 cc behemoth that produces an impressive 120 lb-ft of torque .  Modern Indian motorcycles deliver all you would expect, as far as ride quality, from a modern bike and manage to beautifully incorporate the historical influences in the nuevo-retro styling.

Price: $14,999

Engine: 1,811cc V-twin

Power: 74 HP

Torque: 108 lbs-ft

Transmission: 6 Speed Manual

Curb Weight: 647 lbs

A model that has existed in every version of Indian Motorcycles, from 1922 to now, with variant models as well such as the Chief Bobber

About as classic a cruiser as you can get without inventing a time machine to go back to 1922

Older version (pre-war and mid-20th century) are highly collectible and rare

The current flagship of Indian's middleweight cruiser models

Suzuki Boulevard M109R B.O.S.S.

A muscle cruiser that took inspiration from motorsports to be an undeniable powerhouse.

yamaha cruise bike

For much of the 1990s and early 2000s, Suzuki was building the Savage, Intruder, and Marauder group of cruisers, then along came the Boulevard lineup. Now all these bikes were “fine,” but for me, it was simply trying to replicate what was coming out of Milwaukee. Good luck with that. Trying to effectively provide the same-same for a lower price didn’t really catch on.

In 2006 Suzuki changed the script with the M109R.

Taking racing knowledge and bold unique styling, wrapping it around a stout 109 cu/in V-Twin with a fat rear tire, brought attention and helped create a new category of power cruisers. Suzuki also injected this bike with true company heritage. 120 hp and more than 100 ft-lbs of torque , brakes from the GSX-R parts bin, a chassis and fork with sporting intentions, made this a game-changing package. This bike has been Suzuki’s flagship cruiser bike for 16 years! That is how to offer a true alternative to American iron.

Price: $15,199

Engine: 109 cu (1,783cc) V-twin

Power: 128 HP

Torque: 100+ lbs-ft

Curb Weight: 764 lbs

The M109R is the most powerful of the Suzuki Boulevard cruiser line, with a blacked out engine (BOSS = Blacked Out Suzuki Special)

A chain or belt drive was deemed unsuitable, so the M109R is one of the few muscle cruisers to use a shaft drive

A true flagship bike from Suzuki, it is designed to be loud, proud, and get in your face with its often bright paint colors

Honda Valkyrie

A touring muscle cruiser, and the only six-cylinder cruiser available as a production motorcycle.

yamaha cruise bike

The Honda Valkyrie isn’t just one of the best Japanese cruisers ever made, it’s one of the best cruisers ever made in general! The Valkyrie had a few variations starting in 1997 based around the 1500 Goldwing engine, then later with the polarizing styling of the Rune and the 1800 Goldwing engine. Finally finishing off with the F6C models from 2013-2015 again using the GL1800 engine. In many ways, the Valkyrie was a bagger before riders knew how cool a bagger could be.

Made exclusively at Honda’s Marysville plant in Ohio, it seemed a no-brainer to take the silky-smooth flat-six Goldwing engine and strip off all the touring weight. Leaving an engine with tires and a handlebar, the 100+ lb-ft of torque easily moved the Valkyrie down the highway. With the introduction of the GL1800 Goldwing in 2001, it was just a matter of time before the larger powerplant made its way into a cruiser form. This time it came packaged as the Valkyrie Rune.

The Rune seemed to be going for Japanese Anime styling, and it seemed to be an either love it or hate it look. The Rune is now an extremely rare ride, having been such a limited run during 2003.

Finally, the last use of the Valkyrie name was on the 2014-2015 models. Once again taking advantage of the excellent Goldwing engine, the bike was reworked for a 50/50 weight distribution, but clad with styling elements that no longer needed any chrome to show off.

The Valkyrie proved a V-Twin wasn’t a requirement to be an excellent cruiser. The choice was comfort and performance over exhaust notes and earth-shaking vibrations. The Valkyrie left a lasting impression, and that’s why we rank it as one of the best cruisers of all time.

Price: $13,099 in 2003 ($21,417 in 2023)

Engine: 1,520cc flat-six

Power: 100 HP

Torque: 103 lbs-ft

Curb Weight: 660 to 721 lbs depending on submodel

The Valkyrie was the only production cruiser to come with a flat-six engine, itself lifted out of the venerable Gold Wing

Immensely reliable, due to using the Gold Wing's engine

Continued under various other names after "end of production" in 2003, with the last Valkyrie being sold in 2015

Had a very popular touring version known as the Valkyrie Interstate, which was a classic bagger in styling but a Gold Wing in all but name

Honda Valkyrie (Wikipedia)

Harley-Davidson Twin Cam Models

These models include the softail, dyna, dyna limited, and a whole slew of others between 1999 and 2017.

yamaha cruise bike

There is no way that you can write a list of the best cruisers without including Harley-Davidson . The challenge for this writer is, how do you choose a single model? One of the key aspects of Harley Davidson ownership is making the bike you put a leg over, your bike. Have you ever seen a bone stock, Harley Davidson? Maybe once at the dealership before it was sold.

I think it makes more sense to focus on the heart of the Harley, the engine. The Twin Cam 88 and 96 cu in engines are providing countless hours of joy and frustration to thousands, but I am certain when the mention of cruiser bikes comes up, the distinctive sound of a Twin Cam HD engine is the soundtrack most of us hear.

The 88’s came out in the 1999 model year, and the 96 arrived in 2007 and were found in the frames of every Dyna and Softail(FL). In limited models, the displacement eventually hit 103 and 110 cu inches, good for about 115 lb-ft of torque. These are the machines riders can find the true HD experience on, at a price far less than the latest models, and get way deep in the rabbit hole of custom parts. Once you make it yours, all that’s left to do is get out and cruise.

Price: Varies, but most models with a twin cam are $15,000 or more adjusted to 2023 dollars

Engine: 88 ci (1,450cc) to 110 ci (1,801cc) V-twin

Power: 62 to 80 HP

Torque: 86 to 115 lbs-ft

Transmission: 5 and 6 speed manual

Curb Weight: Varies depending on model engine was installed in

The engines that powered nearly two decades of Harley-Davidson's street, power, muscle, and touring cruisers

Massive torque way down low in the rev range

The engines that helped redefine the "Harley burble" when at idle

Very reliable due to being relatively simple engines that simply worked as intended

Harley-Davidson Twin Cam (Wikipedia)

These motorcycles were selected as examples of what can happen when you let designers and engineers have some fun, while also making the cruisers quite usable and even comfortable. You will find some of the fastest cruisers in history here, which came in at over $20,000 new

Ducati XDiavel

When an italian racing powerhouse makes a sport cruiser, the result is the xdiavel.

yamaha cruise bike

Ducati isn’t usually the first name you think of when you’re asked about cruisers. The marque is usually better associated with exotic superbikes, desmodromics, and fiery Italian temperaments. However, Ducati has released cruiser models in the past. This time, we’re not talking about the rebadged Cagiva Ducati Indiana. We’re talking about the Diavel. In particular, we’re talking about the XDiavel .

The first Diavel was unveiled at the 2010 EICMA show. It was an immediate success. As a model that comfortably toed the line between sports bike and cruiser, the Diavel became the world’s first genuine performance-cruiser, and it wasn’t long until the platform evolved further.

In 2016, the XDiavel was born. This was Ducati’s first belt-driven motorcycle, and thanks to the low-profile, long wheelbase, and large 1,262cc engine, it became Ducati’s fastest accelerating motorcycle at the time. Today, the XDiavel boasts 152 horsepower, 92 lb-ft of torque , and a top speed in excess of 160 mph.

Price: $22,395 and up

Engine: 1,262cc L-twin (90 degree V-twin)

Power: 152 HP

Torque: 93 lbs-ft

Curb Weight: 544 lbs

The XDiavel is the sport cruiser, belt-drive big brother of the Diavel, and is a ridiculously fast cruise missile when running at wide open throttle

The first Ducati to ever have a belt drive

Under 3 seconds 0 to 60, making this one of the fastest accelerating cruisers, of any kind, outside of a drag bike

Top speed in excess of 160 MPH... it is a Ducati, after all!

Yamaha VMAX

Probably the most aptly named power cruiser on this list, the vmax was built to simply be the fastest cruiser. period..

yamaha cruise bike

Muscular, powerful, and fearsome are three adjectives that could describe Yamaha’s legendary cruiser. Ever since it rolled onto the scene in 1985, the VMAX has been causing a scene. It bucks the usual cruiser V-twin trend by enlisting a V4 as its power plant, and it does away with a chain drive in favor of a shaft. It’s unorthodox. And what’s more, it’s blisteringly fast.

Over the years, the VMAX has been available in a number of configurations. However, it’s the post-2009 version that we love the best. Featuring a beefy 1,679 cc V4 engine that produces an ungodly 170 horsepower and 100 lb-ft of torque to the last version in 2020 with 200 horsepower and over 123 lb-ft of torque , the VMAX is no slouch. But what makes it so much fun is the fact that it doesn’t have much in the way of advanced riding aids, like other modern performance cruisers.

The Yamaha VMAX is always on these lists. It’s powerful, fast, and a feast for the eyes—but it’s not actually the best choice if you’re looking for a practical cruiser. The mileage isn’t great and if long distancing cruising is your thing, you’re going to want something with a better economy and an all-important sixth gear. However, if you want short bursts of speed, and want to cruise the streets on a mean lookin’ machine, then the VMAX is hard to beat.

Price: $17,999 to $21,599 (in 2020)

Engine: 1,679cc V4

Power: 200 HP

Torque: 123+ lbs-ft

Curb Weight: 683 lbs

The fastest accelerating cruiser outside of a drag bike to ever be made. It's unashamed of being loud and aggressive and can outpace even some modern supercars

Racing-derived V4 engine produces an astonishing 200 HP

Needs so much air that it has four snorkel intakes, two to a side of the gas tank

The bike is so brutally fast it has to be electronically limited to 143 MPH otherwise a rider might not realize they are approaching warp speed

2020 Yamaha VMAX specs, features, & pics

Triumph Rocket 3 R

Basically what happens when you put a car engine in a bike and let it loose on the road. ah, those brits....

yamaha cruise bike

The Triumph Rocket 3 is a very unusual cruiser, with two defined models specs of the performance oriented R (Roadster) and the distance touring GT (Grand Tourer). This British behemoth is Triumph’s flagship cruising machine: a burly 2,458cc triple-cylinder motorcycle with unbelievable performance specs. The maximum power output is an eye-watering 165 horses and the torque output caps at 163 lb-ft .  It’s the very definition of a muscle cruiser.

As a performance cruiser, the Rocket 3 is a direct competitor to the likes of the Ducati Diavel or Yamaha VMAX, but unlike the Diavel’s smaller stature or the VMAX’s no-frills approach, the Rocket 3 is all about top end luxuries. For example, the current Rocket features fully-adjustable Showa suspension, Brembo Stylema brakes, advanced traction control, cornering ABS, multiple ride modes, cruise control, and more.

It’s an impressive cruiser, but why makes it one of the greatest cruisers ever built? Well, it’s all about that engine. It’s bigger than a lot of car engines. In fact, it’s so large that the most recent version of the Rocket 3 has the largest engine out of all available production motorcycles . That’s official!

Price: $23,895

Engine: 2,458cc inline triple

Power: 164 HP

Torque: 163 lbs-ft

Curb Weight: 649 lbs

The Rocket 3, in R and GT forms, has the single largest displacement engine fitted to any production motorcycle. At 2.5L, it's in fact bigger than a lot of inline-four car engines

Despite its immense engine and brutal power, it is a quite civilized, luxurious cruiser

Very clever engineering makes the bike surprisingly agile despite its size, as the crank is directly along the centerline

Will hit 60 MPH from a standstill in 2.8 to 3.0 seconds, depending if its an R or GT. In other words, it's fairly rapid

The Best Cruiser Motorcycles On The Market

' width=

Drawing ample inspiration from US-built motorcycles of yesteryear, cruisers have long been the most popular and best-selling bike style on North American shores—the world’s  largest motorcycle market . In a bid to cater to the US and Canada’s cruiser-centric customer base, major manufacturers have pored an enormous amount of resources into the development, manufacturing, and marketing of their respective cruiser bike lineups.

And while this has resulted in a buyer’s market that’s been flooded with increasingly capable and competitively-priced two-wheeled wares, the sheer number of available makes and models in the cruiser space can make shopping for a ride in the segment rather daunting. So, with this in mind, we’ve rolled back the last few years of model releases in this space to deliver this guide on the best cruiser motorcycles. In addition to counting down our picks for the latest and greatest available offerings in the sector, we’ll also be exploring what to look for and consider when shopping, along with a brief dive into the history of the cruiser genre and what qualities and factors make them unique.

The History Of Cruiser Motorcycle Style

As the motorcycle came into being, the industry evolved at a rapid rate, giving way to increasingly sophisticated and high-performance two-wheeled offerings. The main genres of motorcycles would evolve as well, and from the 1940s through 1960s, different regions would begin cementing their own respective styles and interpretations of bikes, including the US, with its golden-era big-bore V-Twin age, thanks to models from manufacturers like Crocker, Indian, Excelsior, and Harley-Davidson.

US-based motorcycle companies would not only employ these designs throughout the mid-1900s but said designs would also go on to serve as much of the visual inspiration for the lion’s share of production motorcycles that were subsequently released—a trend that remains to this day and one that has afforded American-made motorcycles their own highly-distinctive appearance. Alongside cruiser bike’s relaxed riding position, ample torque, and conduciveness to touring, their quintessentially American aesthetics play a large role in distinguishing the genre from other styles of bike and represent a major selling point for throngs of bikers. That’s not to say that overseas manufacturers haven’t attempted to emulate the style, or put their own unique spin on the genre, though as a whole, cruisers are American at heart.

A Cruiser’s Crown Jewel

Cruiser Motorcycles & V-Twin Engines

In the early pioneering days of the American motorcycle industry, manufacturers were primarily utilizing relatively primitive air-cooled single-cylinder powertrains, though, in 1906, Indian unleashed the first American V-Twin model with a 39ci 42° lump, just one year before releasing the first US-made V-Twin production model (and three years before Harley would unveil its first V-Twin with its own 45° 49.5ci mill in 1909). In the decades that followed, a variety of American brands —including Indian—would experiment with using other engine configurations, though the 1907 Indian-Built V-Twin became the archetype for American motorcycles.

Today V-Twin engines are synonymous with US-made cruiser motorcycles, boasting a distinctive look that serves as the crown jewel and centerpiece of practically every production cruiser and offering an easily-identifiable and highly-distinct deep, throaty, and rumbling exhaust note. What’s more, these large-displacement V-Twins play a pivotal role in the overall riding experience of American cruisers, with their ample low-end grunt and firmly planted ride. In more recent years, foreign motorcycle companies have introduced cruiser models kicked along by other engine configurations , though even most of these are just variations on the longitudinally-mounted V-Twin such as Ducati’s L-Twin-powered Diavel (and XDiavel) and Moto Guzzi’s cruiser’s transversally-mounted V-Twin bikes.

Cruiser Types

The Five Main Sub-Genres Within The Cruiser Class

Though every model on this list falls under the cruiser umbrella, there are in fact a handful of different styles of motorcycle within the segment. To help shine a light on those differences, we’ve broken down the cruiser class into its five main categories—each of which we’ll briefly touch on directly below.

Entry-Level: As the name of this sub-genre suggests, entry-level models are more accessibly-priced, less-well-optioned, and more novice-friendly takes on cruiser bikes. At least by American cruiser standards, these models have smaller-displacement engines that are more manageable for beginner riders .

Tourer: While they don’t necessarily lend themselves to urban-riding or commuting duties touring bikes are perfect for gobbling up miles on the open road. Powered by large engines, sporting a long wheelbase, and well-planted and highly-stable due to their immense weight, touring models are ideal for motorcycle road-trips and other long-distance applications.

Bagger: Also referred to as “dressers,” baggers are an instantly-recognizable sub-genre of cruisers that sport large fairings, hard luggage, a generously-sized passenger pillion. Like touring models, baggers are also incredibly conducive to long-range travel—an area furthered by the wealth of amenities typically found on baggers such as heated grips, cruise control, and onboard infotainment, stereo, and GPS navigation systems.

Hyper-Cruiser: Hyper-cruiser models are a style of cruiser bike that’s been engineered from the ground up to afford markedly higher-performance than your average cruiser. These high-performance offerings offer more lean angle, better acceleration and cornering, and are often equipped with componentry that’s regularly reserved for sport and superbike models .

Electric: Despite only being comprised of a few production models thus far, electric cruisers almost certainly represent the next big thing in the cruiser realm. Even though they lack the mighty rumble and bark of a traditional petrol-powered V-Twin, electric powertrains still maintain their similarly ample amounts of low-end torque. The emerging EV cruiser class also tends to feature the most cutting-edge technology of any sub-genre on this list.

Starting Small

Why New Riders & Big-Bore Cruisers Do NOT Mix

You wouldn’t want to learn to drive behind the wheel of a Ford F-250 Super Duty or any other massive pickup , and in a similar vein, you almost certainly shouldn’t be beginning your riding career on a full-size cruiser. With even entry-level models sporting roughly liter-sized engines and curb weights exceeding 500lbs, cruisers simply aren’t very conducive to new riders. With gobs of power and half-the-heft of a Fiat 500, cruisers can be exceedingly unforgiving and difficult to control, making them arguably one of, if not the worst possible choice for inexperienced riders.

Starting out on a cruiser that’s too big and/or powerful isn’t just dangerous either, it will impede your growth as a rider and will make the lion’s share of your experience in the saddle an utterly nerve-wracking one—something that may turn you off from riding altogether. If you’ve still got your heart set on kicking off your two-wheeled career on a cruiser, the good news is that today’s market includes a slew of beginner-friendly cruiser models. These bikes feature smaller engines and more svelte curb weights, while still boasting the outward appearance of a traditional cruiser. Once you’ve developed your riding technique and skills, you can always step up to a larger big-bore cruiser later on down the road.

Cruiser Shopping 101

What To Look For & Consider When Buying A New Cruiser Motorcycle

Now that you’re privy to the different available sub-genres and a bit of cruiser history, let’s delve into the five most crucial areas to take into account when buying a bike from this class (in order of importance).

Intended Use: No matter what kind of motorcycle you’re in the market for, your search for a new sled should always be initially guided by your intended use, and this is no less true with cruiser bikes. If you plan on using your bike for daily commuting duties , you’ll want something more nimble and maneuverable, as where if you intend on taking on long-distance treks in the saddle, you will likely want to consider a bagger or touring model.

Style: The immense popularity of the cruiser segment has resulted in a diverse array of styles within the class. Some cruisers take a more vintage approach, drawing aesthetic influence from retro models of the mid-1900s while other models take a more modern approach, with more aggressive character and an overall more contemporary design language. It’s well worth reading up on all the different stylistic options before pulling the trigger on your purchase.

Engine & Power: One of the most defining elements of a cruiser is its engine and said engine’s torque and horsepower output. You not only will want to consider if an engine’s size and power is conducive to your intended use but also if you’re capable of properly and safely managing a particular engine. Additionally, engine mechanics and technology can vary pretty greatly even without today’s market, with some companies employing much more cutting-edge and advanced powertrains than others.

Weight: Most baggers weigh in excess of half-a-ton, making them tremendously difficult to maneuver at lower speeds, especially to the inexperienced and/or uninitiated. As the heaviest motorcycles in existence (aside from side-hacks and trikes), it’s extremely important to factor a cruiser’s weight into your purchase.

Brand: Cruiser riders tend to be a fiercely loyal bunch, and as such certain marques have developed cult statuses and followings, where you’re not just buying a motorcycle, you’re buying into a brand, identity, lifestyle, and experience. Because so many modern cruiser models are inspired by existing vintage bikes, the history of cruiser companies is considered profoundly important. Different manufacturers also have different dealer and support networks and different degrees of access to aftermarket parts. Lastly, it’s always worth reading up on a particular company’s history and reputation for aspects like reliability, as well as their recommended service intervals.

Supplementary Cruiser Selections Worth Considering

Kawasaki Vulcan S ABS

yamaha cruise bike

The Vulcan S is a decidedly sporty mid-sized cruiser that’s based on  the Japanese brand’s  popular and immensely utilitarian Ninja 650 platform. As such the ABS-equipped Vulcan S gets a sportbike-derived frame and the same fan-favorite 650cc twin engine as the Ninja, albeit it uses a markedly different stance. Also of note is the Vulcan S’ adjustable sliding seat and moving foot controls which allow for a custom rider triangle no matter who gets in the saddle.

Engine:  Liquid-Cooled 39.6ci (649cc) DOHC Parallel-Twin Horsepower:  60.4HP Torque:  46.3FT-LBS Weight:  498.3LBS Origin:  Japan MSRP: $7,899

Harley-Davidson Low Rider S

yamaha cruise bike

The Low Rider S is a modern classic tourer that’s draped in West Coast style with its bikini headlight fairing, flat drag-style bars, and mid-mounted foot controls. The bike’s reduced rake, inverted front-end mono-shocked rear suspension, and ABS-enabled dual front disc setup collectively give the Low Rider S above-average performance in its class. Your $18K also gets you the latest version of the  Harley-Davidson  Milwaukee-Eight 114 V-Twin engine and your choice of an all-black or crimson paint.

Engine:  Air-Cooled 107ci (1,753cc) SOHC 45° V-Twin Horsepower:  93HP Torque:  114.3FT-LBS Weight:  679LBS Origin:  America MSRP: $18,199

Ducati Diavel 1260

yamaha cruise bike

Though the XDiavel falls more squarely into the cruiser category of all the bikes in  Ducati’s complete lineup , the Italian manufacturer’s regular Diavel model is unquestionably the top performer of the two, as well as arguably being the more aesthetically attractive of the pair, with the Diavel’s angular intake scoops, higher, sportier seat, and larger radiator covers that are outdated with vertical LED lighting. Powered by a 157hp Testastretta DVT engine, the Diavel 1260 is also offered in a more premium, Ohlins-equipped S-spec, as well as a limited edition top-of-the-line Diavel 1260 Lamborghini that was born out of a collaboration with the supercar manufacturer.

Engine:  Liquid-Cooled 77ci (1,262cc) DOHC 90° L-Twin Horsepower:  157HP Torque:  95FT-LBS Weight:  492LBS Origin:  Italy MSRP: $21,795

Evoke 6061 GT

yamaha cruise bike

Taking its name from the aerospace-grade 6061 aluminum that its frame is constructed from, this electric cruiser model undoubtedly pushes the envelope in the two-wheeled EV sector with a top speed of over 140mph, and a peak power output of 168hp and over 200ft-lbs of torque. As a point of reference, that’s nearly half the torque output of BMW’s latest M3, despite the 6061 tipping the scales at less than one-tenth the BMW’s curb weight. Just as impressive is the Beijing-built eBike’s  battery pack , which affords 290-miles of autonomy and can be fully recharged in an industry-leading 15 minutes.

Engine:  120kW PMSM Electric Motor Horsepower:  167.6HP Torque:  200.6FT-LBS Weight:  372.5LBS Origin:  China MSRP: $24,995

Indian Challenger

yamaha cruise bike

Indian’s menacing-looking answer to Harley’s ultra-popular Road Glide, the Challenger is a more refined sophisticated bagger with more technology, better performance, and in our opinion, a more handsome aesthetic design than its Milwaukee-made direct competitor. Not only is the Challenger lighter than the Road Glide, but it also has a slightly bigger engine and produces noticeably more torque and horsepower—all reasons the Indian has been nipping at the heels of H-D’s best-selling bagger. The Challenger is made all the more enticing by its full suite of LED lighting, race-spec radial-mount Brembo brakes, an electronically-adjustable windscreen, a 100W high-output audio system with an active EQ, and 18 gallons of  weatherproof storage space .

Engine:  Liquid-Cooled 108 cu in (1,768cc) SOHC 60° V-Twin Horsepower:  122HP Torque:  128FT-LBS Weight:  831.1LBS Origin:  America MSRP: $24,999

12 Reasons Why You Should Consider Buying A Yamaha V Star 650

I f you're in the market for a cruiser today , there's no shortage of options. Getting a new Harley-Davidson, for instance, would be right up there on most people's list, given their legacy. But they're also quite expensive, so options from Honda, Suzuki, Indian, and a lot more are also in the offing.

UPDATE: 2024/01/19 15:58 EST BY RAUNAK AJINKYA

Cruisers, regardless of whether you buy them used or new, almost have an unwavering demand. Given that, we have updated this piece with a few more reasons why the discontinued Yamaha V-Star 650 is still worth a second look.

So why, then, would you entertain the idea of not just picking a motorcycle that's been discontinued but is also thoroughly outstripped by almost every other cruiser in most regards? The Yamaha V-Star 650 is the cruiser in question, and as it turns out, what counted against it while it was still in production is actually what's giving it a new lease in the latter half of its life.

This list was compiled using factual data from Yamaha's official website about the V-Star 650 cruiser. Other relevant information was sourced from reliable websites that accurately depict the overall ownership experience.

We Can't Stop Staring At These Awesome Yamaha Cruiser Bikes

Yamaha v star 650 styling.

If you like chrome, you will love the Yamaha V-Star 650. It has soft, traditional cruiser lines and will appeal to anyone who likes bikes from the '60s and '70s. Even though it is a mid-size cruiser in terms of power, size-wise, it is very much a full-size bike. A sheep in wolf’s clothing, if you will.

The effect is that you get a cruiser that is much more compact than it actually looks, giving it great maneuverability and overall riding ease. Subtle-yet-effective styling traits dominate the V-Star 650's design language. That's one of the biggest reasons it has aged so gracefully despite being out of production since 2017.

Yamaha V-Star 650 Design Highlights

  • Traditional cruiser styling
  • Plenty of chrome
  • Wide handlebars
  • Forward controls
  • Upright seating

Low Seat Height

Like almost any cruiser, the V-Star 650 has a very approachable seat height, opening the bike up to new riders and those who are a little vertically challenged . Not only does the seat height ensure that more people can get comfortable on the V-Star 650 quickly, but it also ensures that it's beginner-friendly.

Ample Performance For Cruising

Max torque output: 37.5 lb-ft.

To be clear, the V-Star 650 is neither a powerful bike nor a sport cruiser . The best way to describe its power and torque output would be to call it adequate. It is, however, enough to go cruising. Its 40 horsepower is enough to get it up to highway speed just fine, and its mile-munching abilities aren't in question.

Here's What Makes The Yamaha V-Star 650 A Good Beginner Bike

Comfortable cruiser.

Not only will the bike crunch miles, but it will do it while giving you a very comfortable place to sit. It doesn’t have much in the way of suspension travel, but as long as you stay on paved roads, it will absorb pretty much everything you throw at it.

The forward controls are not so extreme that they make you feel uncomfortable, they just rather effectively put you in a laid back position that will remain pretty comfortable right up until your next stop for gas.

2014 Yamaha V-Star 650 Suspension And Tire Specs

Unique v-twin, max power: 40 hp.

With a range of 200 miles and a top cruising speed of 96 mph, you will spend at most three hours in the saddle at a time. It is a very efficient V-twin that sounds great. It was around for several years and has only been out of production for around five, so even the dealers will still have parts on hand.

2014 Yamaha V-Star Engine Specs

Yamaha's bulletproof reliability, owners' reliability rating: 4.5/5.

As long as you take care of basic maintenance on the V-Star 650, this flexible Yamaha cruiser will go on forever . The Japanese marque has built an incredible reputation for reliability, and this bike is no exception.

It is mechanically simplistic, so if you like working on your bikes or just want to learn, this is a great bike to start with. And clearly, the reliability rating of 4.5/5 proves that people who've lived with the V-Star 650 have had little to no issues with it.

Here's What Makes The Yamaha V Star 250 A Top Notch Cruiser

Running costs.

If you are willing to take on some basic maintenance tasks yourself, it will cost next to nothing to run. On average, owners have reported an annual service cost of a shade above $500 , which is very reasonable once you consider the kind of bike you're getting.

Even if you are not willing to do the work yourself, there is likely a Yamaha dealership in your town that won’t charge all that much to do the work for you. It is also a low-compression, under-stressed engine designed for longevity.

Yamaha V Star 650 Efficiency

Average fuel efficiency: 47 mpg.

The Yamaha V-Star 650, so far, plays the part of a relaxed, simplistic cruiser quite well. But one of the key aspects of cruising is how long you can go between fill-ups at gas bunkers, and here, too, the V-Star comes through commendably.

It features a fuel tank capacity of 4.2 gallons that, once you apply the average stated fuel consumption of 47 MPG, translates to a 202-mile range. Admittedly, there are a fair few motorcycles out there that can better this figure, but for the kind of cruiser that the V-Star 650 is, the figure is quite respectable.

Yamaha V-Star 650 Efficiency

  • Fuel tank capacity - 4.2 gallons
  • Average fuel efficiency - 47 MPG
  • Average range per tankful - 200+ miles

Old-School Cool

The V-Star 650 has a certain charm, something that newer, more complex bikes simply don’t have. Admittedly, using something intangible like charm as a deciding factor might not seem like a scientific way to do things. Still, the truth of the matter is that these decisions aren't always logical, either.

The only new equivalent to the V-Star might be a Royal Enfield 350, but the Yamaha has it licked for comfort and reliability.

Here's What We Love About The Yamaha V-Star 1300

This is not the kind of bike you should buy if you have an ego to satisfy. This is a humble motorcycle that gets the job done for those riders who know what they want.

At a stretch, it can even be said that the V-star 650 is a fun bike to cruise on and even commute on, and will likely never let you down. Unfortunately, it will not necessarily get the pulse going with electric acceleration or incredible face-melting torque. It just isn’t that kind of bike.

Great Value

With the way the V-Star 650 is and for all it represents, it isn’t a desirable motorcycle per se. So, the V-Star offers tremendous value for those who just want to ride and don’t care about image or brand loyalty.

It is also a bike that enjoyed a pretty long production run, so it isn’t as if they are in short supply either.

Yamaha V Star 650 Used Examples Are Abundant

Used price range: $1,800-$4,000.

The Yamaha V-Star 650, then, comes across as a laid-back, relaxed, efficient, and reliable cruiser. It won't set the heart racing by any means, but it makes up for what it misses out on excitement by being utterly rock solid and reliable.

The V-Star 650 has been out of production for quite a while now, but it enjoyed a remarkably long production run. Consequently, if this kind of cruiser is exactly what you're looking for, you'd be happy to know there's no shortage of them in the used market. In fact, you can get one for a throwaway price. The cheapest we could identify one for was around $1,800, with the price range going up to a still-affordable $4,000.

Things To Look Out For Before Buying A Used V-Star 650:

12 Reasons Why You Should Consider Buying A Yamaha V Star 650

We Can't Stop Staring At These Awesome Yamaha Cruiser Bikes

Harley-Davidson isn't the only motorcycle company that makes awesome-looking cruiser bikes. Yamaha makes some of the coolest Japanese cruisers ever.

Nobody builds cruiser bikes quite like Yamaha . The cruiser bike market, in general, is stuffy with different brands and it is hard to pick just one out of the lot. However, somehow, Yamaha stands out above the rest of them.

We could simply explain in detail why Yamaha has in its assembly some of the best cruiser bikes in the world today, but honestly, it might be better if we showed you why instead. Showing is much more effective than telling, so let's show you 10 of the best Yamaha cruiser bikes that we just cannot stop staring at. Then, you'll understand why Yamaha is so special.

10 Yamaha Bolt R-Spec

K&N have crafted some impressive modifications for vehicles over the years, including the one on the Yamaha Bolt R-Spec. Most of the improvements that they made on the R-Spec are simple, but boy, are they effective.

The main changes they made were in applying an air filter that helped boost the bike's breathing abilities. Improving the airflow of the cycle is enough to improve the overall performance of the vehicle in general. Besides that, the updated design of the bike is gnarly.

When Yamaha decided to update its XVS1300 cruiser for the year 2016, Yamaha opted not to make any major technical changes to their signature bike. What they did do, however, was deliver a dark, brooding design straight out of a Batman movie. This is might as well be a Bat Cycle straight out of Bruce Wayne's dreams.

Dark and shiny chrome fits the aesthetic fits the night air almost as much as it is a perfect fit for anyone with the color black dominating their closet wardrobe.

8 Yamaha V Star 2005

When YouTuber and vehicle specialist Nick Murray decided to review a 2005 model for the original Yamaha V Star, he dubbed it to be most "affordable custom-cruiser." Granted, he couldn't tell the difference between a cruiser bike made from custom parts and an actual customized bike, but we'll let that slide on grounds that he's right on the money.

The 2005 Yamaha V Star is sleek, slim, and subtle in all of the ways that the average rider should always want their Yamaha to be.

7 Yamaha V Star 650

Spoiler alert: there are going to be a lot of Yamaha V Stars featured on this list, specifically for the next few entries. But can you blame us? The V Star is such a beauty to behold and Yamaha continued to improve it year after year, model after model, and upgrade after upgrade. Just about every upgrade is worth boasting about.

The Yamaha V Star 650 is no exception, as this cycle rides high on a gorgeous chrome paint job and rides even faster off of a 650cc V-Twin engine.

6 Yamaha V Star 1100 2007

Next up, Yamaha introduced to the world the next evolution in their V Star series with their Yamaha V Star 1100 custom cruiser. On top of re-introducing the comfortable low seating and wheelbase that every V Star has, what separates the 2007 model for the V Star 1100 from the rest is a low end torque that helps improve the engine's performance.

Like other Yamaha V Stars on this list - and, actually, the Yamahas on this list in general - the designs are nicely subtle, including ghost flames on the tank.

5 Yamaha V Star 950 2015

Upgrading to the Yamaha 950, specifically the 2015 model, there was already a lot to offer from this cruiser prior to any customization. The lightweight makeshift makes it easy to handle and it is cozier to sit in with a lowered seating arrangement; making it far more comfortable for riders than with previous versions of the Yamaha, or even Yamaha's competitors.

One extra benefit to this Yamaha is that the fender is made out of pure steel, making it easier to apply customized parts to the surface.

4 Yamaha Virago XV920 Alpha

ASE Custom Motorcycles did a doozy on this one, in the best way possible. They took a classic XV920 out of Yamaha Virago series - which, fun fact, actually served as Yamaha's first time they introduced V-twin cruisers to their brand - and produced the "Alpha."

The Alpha saw ASE Customs create something that doubled as both a cruiser and as a cafe racer. All while applying a stellar gold and blue paint job to boot. Not to mention, a XJ600 Diversion petrol tank was added to spice the bike's performance up a bit.

3 100-HP Yamaha Road Star

Baron's Custom Accessories had their hands full when they decided to revamp the 100-HP Yamaha Road Star. The most notable adjustment that was made was obviously the paint, coating the motorcycle in a glorious mix of black and silver coloring across a chrome plastic covering.

The paint job alone makes this a bike that is worth every penny. Heck, the whole thing is almost just as shiny as a penny. Everyone should own something so shiny in their garage, especially when it can speed out of said garage at such a fast speed.

2 2010 Yamaha Raider S

For any fans out there of choppers that still insist on wanting to ride on something a little bit faster and lighter, the Yamaha Raider S is exactly for you. The Raider S was Yamaha's attempt to meld the world of cruiser bikes hand in hand with the world of the chopper.

In doing so, we get a hybrid that offers a subtle take on the classic chopper look on behalf of Yamaha while also giving the rider the option riding something that is lighter, but with tighter handles at a speed that could be just as fast as the chopper.

1 Yamaha Star Bolt Turned Into A Scrambler

Trailing back to another type of Bolt in Yamaha's collection, let's talk about a clever bit of customization for a second. The good ole folks over at ChapMoto decided to take a classic Bolt cruiser and give it a more retro scrambler design.

One sub-frame recreation, a raising of the seat, the addition of spoke wheels and dual tires, a fork brace installation, a new exhaust pipe, a fender trimming, a muffler replacement, and a couple paint jobs later, we have ourselves this beauty to behold.

Everything To Know About Yamaha Raider Motorcycles

Yamaha Raider

The 1960s were an instrumental and transformative time in motorcycle history. Out of this era, the custom chopper-style bikes were born and solidified with the Harley-Davidson FX1200 Super Glide. The factory custom motorcycle enabled riders to add a few personal touches with aftermarket components, making them unique. Japanese manufacturers began to develop their own line of cruiser bikes to compete with the iconic American brand. Yamaha Motor Company manufacturing produced some notable competition with its take on factory custom bikes with the influential XS650 Special and later with the robust Raider and Raider S.

Launched in 2008, the Yamaha Raider was equipped with a 1,854cc air-cooled V-twin engine, and a style that called back to classic motorcycles. You could opt for either the standard Raider or the Raider S, which includes some visual enhancements such as more chrome. This bike offers a massive 113-cubic-inch engine that produces 95 horsepower and 125 lb-ft of torque. When you compare the Raider to the Harley-Davidson Softail of the time, the American brand only offered an 88-cubic-inch engine with 62 horsepower and 78 lb-ft of torque. While the Raider has plenty of loyal fans, it ultimately was discontinued in 2018 among rumors of sagging sales and costs associated with meeting emissions requirements.

Japanese sport bikes dominate, why not make cruisers?

Companies like Honda, Yamaha, and Kawasaki took the motorcycle industry by storm in the 1960s with a focus on performance. By the '90s, models like the Yamaha R1 dominated the sport bike market. During the same period, Yamaha took notice of Harley-Davidson's success and decided to try their hand at cruiser bikes. One of their more recent attempts came from the Yamaha Raider and Raider S produced between 2008 and 2018. The Raider wasn't the only model that stopped production; Yamaha also discontinued one of its most legendary sport bikes .

The Raider is a large bike with an engine that packs a punch and a vintage visual style. The Raider even offers a hemispherical cylinder head (hemi) to appeal to American riders. Based on specification comparisons, the Raider was more powerful than a Harley-Davidson Softail, its industry rival. However, starting in 2012 with 5.8 million sales, Yamaha's numbers steadily declined, only beginning to recover in 2021, according to Motorcyclesdata.com . It seems that overcoming Harley-Davidson in the cruiser genre isn't a matter of features or performance. Instead, riders appear to favor Harley-Davidson due to its nostalgic American roots, which is something Yamaha just can't replicate.

The Yamaha Raider is not a great choice for beginners

While the Raider and Raider S provide plenty of advantages over other chopper-style cruiser models available, they're not considered beginner-friendly. First of all, the bike is large and weighs nearly 735 pounds with fuel. Its big shape and notable heft mean that newbies might find it difficult to control, especially at slower speeds. Its size and design also prevent it from handling well in corners, so the learning curve (pun sort of intended) for new riders is steep.

The Raider is also very powerful, which can quickly put inexperienced riders into situations where they are traveling too fast. A first-timer won't necessarily know how to control the Raider, leaving the possibility open for accidents or run-ins with law enforcement.

One weird quirk that will stump beginners and some experienced riders is the kickstand. Its location makes it a bit awkward to put down, and depending on your choice of footwear, it could have you struggling to release it so you can dismount the bike. For those new to bikes, which Yamaha motorcycle is best for beginners?

Mike Pohlable - Google “This place is great. You really need to stop in if you’re looking for an electric bike. Most of their bikes have sales prices not reflected on their website. I stopped in after ordering an ebike from a different online retailer 2 weeks ago that still hasn’t shipped. I got one here - with a trailer, and store mounted stem riser to make sure the bike fit me well - for about $600 LESS than what I paid online. Being able to ride and try out the bikes first is really nice. Some of the bikes I liked just didn’t... Ride right... For me. I didn’t get what I planned on purchasing when I walked in (I got a different bike that fit me better that was a few hundred dollars cheaper). They don’t try to sell you on the most expensive. They try to get you something that fits you. (they may try to up sell locks and stuff, but I was asking about those - and baskets - and the trailer - so... Maybe expect a little of that, but their accessories are reasonably priced, and it felt more like I was taking them into selling than them pressuring me to buy them).” To see more TESTIMONIALS from previous customers, please click HERE .
Stephanie G., Fremont, CA - Yelp “I came to ELV Motors on a Sunday afternoon. I was immediately greeted by Morgan, the owner’s son, in search of an electric scooter. Morgan was knowledgeable and when he didn’t know the answer he’d ask his father. I was able to test ride a few scooters and narrow down my choices. When I was uncertain about my decision to purchase one on the spot, Doug, the owner, didn’t place pressure. Instead, he let me know of a new product they’d be receiving that I might be interested in. For now, my needs for a scooter have changed, however if I find myself wanting one again, I’d come back here.” To see more TESTIMONIALS from previous customers, please click HERE .
Steve Lindenau - BH EMOTION “ELV Motors was one of Easy Motion’s first customers. Doug has done a fantastic job selling our products, and coming up with very creative and entrepreneurial ways to promote our products and exposing people to the multi faceted benefits of electric bikes. I truly enjoy working with Doug, and I appreciate his high energy and creative approach to our industry. I am confident that we will have a long and prosperous future together. I wish we had more dealers like Doug Schwartz!” To see more TESTIMONIALS from previous customers, please click HERE .
Lisa L., Los Altos, CA - Yelp “This seems to be a small, family-owned business. And they are really superb in what I believe are the most important things (price, quality, service, knowledge, expertise)...I adore this shop and the people working here. Yes, the bikes they sell are expensive, but not in the price-is-jacked-up way, just in the “we have good quality bikes to sell” way.” To see more TESTIMONIALS from previous customers, please click HERE .

Vintage Electric Bikes Tracker Roadster

Retro-styled machines have a way of inspiring warm fuzzies, and the latest from Vintage Electric Bikes is no exception.

With a slim profile and board track racer-inspired lines, these premium e-bikes trigger knee-jerk nostalgia. But the top models from the Santa Clara, California-based brand also harbor a wicked secret: They pack a monstrous 72-volt battery capable of hurtling the bikes at speeds up to 40 mph—just one reason why we named the Vintage Electric Roadster one of the eight best e-bikes on the market.

Under the shade of an oak tree at The Huntington Library in San Marino, California, CEO Andrew Davidge regales me with tales of early collaborations with EV land speed record contender Shea Nyquist and the man responsible for Jay Leno’s notorious tank-powered Blastolene Special, Mike Leeds. With hot rod roots like these, who needs to hide behind false humility?

At first glance, the top models look like deluxe beach cruisers you might find in a coastal SoCal town. But they incorporate moto-inspired hardware like a front suspension fork, hydraulic disc brakes, and full LED lighting. Climb aboard the leather saddle, and the touchpoints come across as thoughtfully finished. There are serrated pedals to assist with propulsion if desired, leather-wrapped grips, and a seemingly innocuous thumb throttle that unleashes up to 4,000 watts of power in race mode. A small LCD display offers battery charge information and a readout of the five levels of e-assist—from gentle, to zippy, to downright bonkers.

Vintage Electric Bikes Tracker Roadster

Vintage Electric Bikes

Easing out of the Huntington’s demure grounds, my borrowed ride blends in with the neighborhood’s patrician undertones. But as I gently squeeze the thumb throttle, the scenery accelerates with deliciously improper urgency. The thrust feels strangely naughty, but there’s also the cognitive dissonance of traveling the same speed of cars on a vehicle that’s barely wider than a bicycle.

A few things to mind while piloting a 40 mph e-bike: Things happen quickly at that speed (like the doors of parked cars whipping open); it can be tempting to cruise through stop signs (bad idea); and skipping eye protection may lead to a stream of tears across your cheeks. Importantly, the bike’s brakes are just as capable of slowing it down as its hub motor is adept at whisking it forward. For those less intent on hot-rodding their way through town, Vintage’s Tracker Classic line offers a more upright seating position and milder 48-watt power capable of achieving a 26 mph top speed and up to 75 miles of riding range, the same as the 70-watt model.

Priced in the range of some high-end Italian scooters, Vintage’s EV offerings are positioned more as objects of electrified desire than utilitarian A to B transport. While the 72-watt top models are a bit much for most riders, those seeking discreetly swift two-wheeled Q ships might have finally met their ideal electrified ride.

Yamaha YZF-R7 Is Ready To Be Cooler Than Ever, Here’s How

The YZF-R7 is about to get new fairings that look inspired by the YZF-R6

  • Updated bodywork with new side fairings for the YZF-R7 revealed in patent filing.
  • New radiator design with potential for power boost and more peak power speculated.
  • Changes hint at Yamaha aiming to keep up with more powerful competitors in middleweight category.

The YZF -R7 debuted just a couple of years ago in 2022 and remains the freshest YZF sports bike in Yamaha ’s well-loved lineup. More importantly, it has no major shortcomings, so it remains a key player in the sub-700cc middleweight category. However, things can always get better, and it seems Team Blue is planning an update for its sports bike to prove the same point. The news comes via Yamaha’s patent filings published recently.

The Yamaha YZF-R7 Will Gain Updated Bodywork

The patent filing reveals updated bodywork for the YZF-R7. And no, Yamaha isn’t changing the already-impressive fascia or YZF-R6-inspired tail section. The key change comes to the side fairings that have a new shape. Although a 2D image, we can clearly see the new plastics have a reworked opening near the rider’s leg. This is partnered with a more aggressive shape down low.

Another detailed shot of the fairing shows a segmented design with internal air channels. They look somewhat reminiscent of the YZF-R6’s fairings. Not exactly a bad thing, given the popularity of the 600cc screamer. There aren’t any changes to the tank or fenders, meanwhile.

A New Radiator Is Incoming For The Yamaha YZF-R7

Why has this been done, you ask? There’s another patent that reveals that. It shows a new radiator for the YZF-R7, paired with two different cover designs. This new radiator has the inlet/outlet ports on either side rather than the top/bottom layout on the current model.

As for the covers, the first one has a curved design to channel air outward and upward. A large vent then deflects it downward. Whereas, the second design is much simpler, boasting side vanes but not the latter vent. Regardless of the design, both necessitate new fairings, as they need a larger opening.

More Power For The Yamaha YZF-R7?

That brings us to “why would the YZF-R7 need a new radiator?”. Especially when there aren’t any major heating issues with the sports bike. While only Yamaha can give a solid answer, one hunch could be to aid in a power boost. You see, the R7’s 689cc engine current runs at a compression ratio of 11.5:1. This isn’t a lot by industry standards, and there is a chance Yamaha’s considering boosting it up.

If so, that would result in more peak power. But it’d come at the cost of…you guessed it…more heat. It all makes total sense market-wise, too. After all, the YZF-R7 is one of the least powerful bikes in its segment. It produces 73 horsepower which is less than its counterparts such as:

  • Suzuki GSX-8R (83 HP)
  • Triumph Daytona 660 (94 HP)
  • Honda CBR650R (95 HP)
  • Aprilia RS 660 (100 HP)

How The Yamaha MT-07 And YZF-R7 Want To Become Effortless To Ride

Take all of it with a pinch of salt, though. None of this is confirmed so far, other than the information revealed in the patent filings. It’s also worth noting Yamaha has filed many patents in the past that haven’t become a reality yet.
