You can tour Walt Disney's apartment at Disneyland — but is the $160 price worth it?

Summer Hull

While some of the millions of guests who file into the gates of Disneyland each year know little about the park beyond its rides, others are quite familiar with the extra touches hidden in plain sight. For example, some are aware that Walt Disney had an apartment located right on Main Street USA. They may also know that a lamp stays on in the window of that apartment as a symbol of the famous animator's still-present legacy in the parks.

What even devoted visitors might not realize is that this historical space is now accessible via a new tour. As a guest on Walt's Main Street Story Tour, you'll step inside Disney's apartment and learn all about the animator and his life at Disneyland in the 1950s.

Unlike Disney VIP tours , you won't need to shell out thousands of dollars to peek into Disney's apartment. All that's required is a $160 per person tour fee and proof of a valid park reservation and admission for the same day. Advance bookings are not necessary, though they're highly recommended and can be made ahead of time (up to 60 days before your visit).

Being the Disney history enthusiast that I am, I have always been curious to see what Disney's apartment looked like. So, when I learned that a recent trip to Disneyland would occur shortly after the launch of Walt's Main Street Story Tour, I couldn't resist a chance to walk inside the animator's former home.

Here's what Walt's Main Street Story Tour was like — and whether the new experience is worth the price.

An overview of Walt Disney's apartment

As you may expect, the main draw of Walt's Main Street Story Tour is to see the former home of Walt Disney. Added in the 1950s while Disneyland was under construction, the apartment served as a convenient spot from which Disney could keep tabs on the park's progress when he was not busy making some of Walt Disney Studios' most iconic movies. By locating the apartment directly inside the park, Disney could reduce his time spent commuting and more efficiently tend to his many projects.

Built above Disneyland's fire station on Main Street USA, Disney's in-park abode was designed to look and feel different from his main residence. It featured a Victorian-inspired theme with tufted furnishings, ornate white columns, a mix of antiques and bold red carpet and drapes.

While it was originally created as a place for Disney to stay for work, it was frequently used by his family during Disneyland visits after the park opened in 1955, as this 1962 image shows. In this photo, Disney and his wife, Lillian Disney, are enjoying the space with three of their grandchildren.

walt disney tour disneyland

Despite the small size of the apartment — which I immediately noticed when I visited — the 500-square-foot abode served its purpose, offering only a living room, a kitchen, a bathroom and a dressing room. As the story goes, due to the lack of a proper bed, Walt and Lillian slept on couches on opposite sides of the main room during their stays at the property.

What to expect during Walt's Main Street Story Tour at Disneyland

To start the tour, head to the park entrance end of Main Street USA. This is where you'll find a tucked away area with a little gazebo office called "Tour Gardens."

walt disney tour disneyland

When I arrived to check in for the tour, I was asked about my snack preferences before being given both a neck tag and a listening device so I could better hear the tour guide's insights while strolling around Main Street.

Our tour began with a 10-minute visit to the Disney Gallery, where a map of what Disneyland looked like on opening day was on display. It was here that we learned more about what inspired the design of Main Street USA.

walt disney tour disneyland

We then walked around Main Street for about 10 minutes, getting some tidbits about the thoroughfare's design.

Once we were roughly 25 minutes into the tour, we made our way to the firehouse. By this point, the anticipation was building, as the eight of us on the tour knew that this likely meant we were minutes away from walking backstage, going up the staircase and emerging in Disney's iconic apartment. With each step, our anticipation grew even more.

Upon entering the apartment, we proceeded to spend between 30 and 40 minutes looking at everything in awe while learning about all that lay inside (under watchful eyes, of course).

Much to my disappointment, tourgoers are not permitted to take photos while in the apartment and must keep all of their belongings on one side of the wall near the entrance to ensure no pictures are being secretly snapped. However, a Disney PhotoPass photographer does appear about 20 minutes into your time in the apartment to take some photos. The cost of the tour covers all digital images you receive from this service via your Disneyland app.

walt disney tour disneyland

To wrap up the tour, we ventured out onto the apartment's patio for 20 minutes. This is where you're given a specially-themed, lemon-flavored cookie and a soda of your choice to enjoy as you listen to the sounds of Main Street down below.

A parade happened to go by while we were up there, so the scene was particularly lively during our visit. For just a brief moment as my eyes were closed, I felt like I could fully imagine what Disney experienced as he watched passersby from that perch.

Is the tour inside Walt Disney's apartment worth it?

As a die-hard Disney fanatic who enjoys learning all about Walt Disney and the history of the parks, I didn't hesitate to spend $160 to go inside this apartment. The snack break and additional history provided around Main Street were merely added bonuses as far as I was concerned.

That said, not everyone will feel the same as me. If $160 seems like a good trade to you to gain access to an exclusive part of Disneyland, then odds are you'll enjoy the tour as much as I did. Between the insider facts gleaned during the tour and the keepsake photos provided by the Disney PhotoPass photographer, there were many moments from the experience that I'll cherish forever.

walt disney tour disneyland

However, if you're not raising a budding Disney historian, then this tour likely will not be appropriate or entertaining enough for anyone younger than 12. The same could even be said for older tweens and teens, depending on how fascinated they are with Disney history. I did not bring my kids on the tour as it wouldn't have been a good use of money or their time in the park to do so, though I hope that changes once they're a little older.

If there's anything about the tour I wish was different, it's that it was a little long. By cutting some of the snack time or skipping the part about Main Street USA to bring the 90-minute tour time down to one hour, more time could be spent on other interesting aspects of the park's history, such as how some of the opening day rides came to be. In a perfect world, I'd love for the tour to be structured like Disney's Keys to the Kingdom Tour at Disney World , but now I'm nitpicking.

So is Walt's Main Street Story Tour absolutely worth signing up for? Ultimately, that will depend on your personal interests and budget.

If you or any of your park companions are not that into Disney history or would rather spend your money elsewhere, then you'll likely want to skip this tour. There's no harm in moving right past the illuminated lamp above the Main Street fire station so you can enjoy more time in Galaxy's Edge or an extra ride on your favorite modern-day Disneyland attraction.

Another special perk of the Disneyland Railroad Guided Tour is a ride on the Lilly Belle, the special train car named after Lillian Disney. (Dependent on weather; the Lilly Belle is not air conditioned and will not run if it’s too hot.)

The start date and pricing for this tour has not been announced yet.

Cultivating the Magic Guided Tour

Happiest Haunts Guided Tour

Holiday Time at the Disneyland Resort Guided Tour

This tour has not been announced yet for 2024. If the tour returns, tickets should go on sale during the late summer.

Disneyland Resort VIP Tours

If the standard guided tours do not interest you, perhaps you can create your own private tour! But you have to have deep pockets for it!

Any Guest can book their own personal Disneyland VIP Tour for a group of up to 10 people, for the cool price tag of $500 to $700 per hour, with a minimum of 7 hours. So doing the math, that’s $3500 to $4900 as a starting price. That may sound high (and it is!) but if you split the cost between 10 people, it makes the cost a bit more manageable.

Personal VIP Tours get you a lot of perks. VIP Guests get expedited access to most attractions, so you don’t have to worry about spending most of your day in lines. You’ll also get reserved viewing for any parades, shows, and nighttime spectaculars (if they are included in your time frame). And before your visit, your VIP concierge will help you with any dining reservations you desire.

Be aware that separate theme park tickets and park reservations are required! Park admission or reservations are not included in the price of a VIP Tour.

To book a VIP Tour you can call (714) 300-7710 or email Disney Special Activities at [email protected] , or visit the Disneyland VIP Tour website for more information.

On the Day of Your Tour

  • All tours start inside Disneyland, so make sure you choose Disneyland as your starting park if you have a park hopper ticket and your tour starts prior to 11am.
  • At the designated time, go to the Disneyland Tour Gardens which is on the west side of the park, between City Hall and the entrance. You will need to give the host/hostess your name and your tour confirmation number. The person who booked the tour may also need to show their photo ID. You’ll be given further instructions once you check in.
  • Your entire party needs to be present when checking in. Late arrivals may not be accommodated.

Walt’s Main Street Story Attractions

Our tour began on Main Street, U.S.A. with our lovely guide, highlighting and detailing many things about Walt Disney’s vision for Disneyland. It’s an abbreviated version of the previous “Walk in Walt’s Footsteps Tour” and excludes the first-hand audio that used to play.

This time around, you’ll only hear from your Tour Guide themselves. One stop was in front of the U.S.A. where you can read the dedication speech Walt Disney gave on opening day, July 17, 1955.

flag pole on Main Street

Without spoiling the entire tour, you can expect to see these other attractions (but no rides) during your tour:

  • Stops along Main Street, U.S.A.
  • Main Street Cinema
  • East Center Street (I just learned the name of this area a few years ago!)
  • Refreshment Corner
  • Main Street Vehicles as they pass by
  • Fire Station
  • Walt’s Apartment
  • Walt’s Patio just outside the apartment

Visit Walt’s Apartment in Disneyland Park

At the conclusion of our tour, we were invited into Walt Disney’s apartment over Main Street, U.S.A.

Walt's apartment at Disneyland

I’ve been able to visit Walt’s apartment twice now and both times it was during the Christmas season. My first visit we were only give one photo shot, but this time a PhotoPass photographer joins the tour to get more photos of your visit.

Jessica in Walts Apartment

I really loved this added touch and you can see at a quick glance how much better quality the second visit photos are.

Jessica Walts apartment tour

The apartment has remained much the same but is something spectacular to see with your own eyes. This tour is really fantastic for not only devoted Disney fans, but anyone new to the parks as an adult or teen. It really helps frame the vision and the why behind Disneyland Resort.

Walt tour cookie

Afterwards, we sat on the patio for some unscripted chats with our Tour Guide and members of the tour group. You can also indulge in your drink and cookie at that time. It was very fun and relaxing to reminisce, learn and talk with fellow Disney fans above it all while the sounds of Main Street rose from below.

Walk in Walt’s Footsteps vs. Walt’s Main Street Story

Many who have been on the Walk in Walt’s Footsteps tour will instantly make comparisons. This is definitely a different tour, a bit watered down and at a higher price point. I still feel it is worth doing, especially if you’ve never been inside Walt Disney’s Main Street apartment.

Walk in Walt's Footsteps Tour

This tour does have some room to grow. I specifically missed these elements from the previous version of Walk in Walt’s Footsteps:

  • First-person audio from  notable people like Walt’s daughters and others who worked on the building of Disneyland.
  • Touring various lands in the park and pointing out the hidden gems like the l ocation of coveted Club 33 in New Orleans Square.
  • The story of Walt’s bench from Griffith Park in Los Angeles.
  • Hearing the tender last moments from Walt’s life before he passed away.

Other parts of the previous tour like riding attractions and eating lunch definitely upped the time frame of the tour, but I did not find those as important as the other points listed above.

I recommend this tour for ages 12 and up, depending on maturity level. But teens and adults will get the most from this exclusive experience. As an avid Disneyland and Disney history fan, there are plenty of things I had heard before, but even then—Disney stories never really get old do they?

Explore Walt Disney’s Disneyland

A self-guided tour through Disneyland Park seeing things the way Walt saw them during his days strolling down Main Street, U.S.A. is available in our print-at-home Disneyland Plan Classics .

While it is not a replacement for the official park tour, it outlines how to visit each opening day attraction, along with places to eat and visit that have special significance to Walt and Disneyland history.

Purchase your Disneyland Plan Classics before your next Disneyland vacation.

Do you have to purchase a ticket to the park too or can you just do the tour?

Valid admission is required, the tour cost is additional.

Hi, Do you know if Club 33 is still part of the tour? I’ve read somewhere that it has now been taken out of the tour and it is now only Walt’s apartment.

Club 33 is not part of this tour. While things can change, the tour was developed to showcase Walt’s apartment and that has been the focal point of the tour for the last few years.

I am assuming that the headsets used are Bluetooth. My question is that I have read in other reviews, that the single earbud that Disney provides is OK, but those that have Apple or any other Bluetooth earbuds actually work better. I am curious as to your recommendations.

You can use your own headsets but they are not bluetooth compatible.

Thank you for your description. My wife and I are going in May for our anniversary and are very much looking forward to taking this tour!

You’re going to love this tour! I can’t say enough good things about it.

I can see you said 4 hours in the tour I thought it was 2-3 hours was yours longer for any reason ? Thanks

Great catch Leanne, the extra hour was during our dining. Our group was split into 2 at the end. One group dined first and then saw the apartment. My group saw the apartment first, then ate which gave us plenty of time to linger and chat with our awesome tour guide. How long you spend eating (if you’re the last group) is totally up to you.

If you have never been to Disneyland ( I have been to Disney World a lot!) is this the tour you recommend? Thanks! Susie

My quick answer is YES! But then I’d ask, how many days will you be there? If a few, then yes– if one then no. It’s certainly something anyone with a love for Walt Disney and Disney history must do at some point. Please keep me posted if you decide to do it.

My sister and I did this tour a couple of years ago and believe me, it was so worth the money, it was amazing. We’re going again in November and plan to do the tour again, and we can’t wait! We saw the Dream Suite last time so we are very hopeful that will see Walt’s apartment this time.

I totally agree Roxanne. I am ready to do it again and it hasn’t even been one year. I need to try the other tours as well. Such high quality information and tour guides.

We are looking to take our Niece & Nephew in October. We went 2 years ago & loved it, but our tour included a tour of the Dream Suite. You mentioned Walt’s apartment…..is it a matter of when you go that they decide where you go?

Hello, thank you for your question. Walt’s apartment wasn’t open to the public a couple years ago as they were doing some maintenance and things. During that time they swapped out the apartment for the Dream Suite. Currently the Dream Suite is not being shown on any tour. However, it could change at any time but the Dream Suite is kinda a back up as the tour is always meant to include Walt’s apartment. I truly think you all will love it with this on the itinerary.

Would you recommend this tour if you have a small child? (Will be 20 months when we go) This will be my first time to Disneyland as I grew up in FL with Disney World. Love the history aspect of Disney.

Hi Steve, I would definitely say no. I do not recommend a 20 month old. All paying participants have a head set on the entire time and things move quickly. I believe we took one bathroom break in the 4 or so hours of the tour. Of course you know your child best. If you feel your child will stay put in a stroller for the duration of the tour with little entertainment or breaks, then try it out. I am not sure how they handle bringing little ones into Walt’s Apartment though because you’re in there a while with no place to sit or roam. I do hope you get to experience it one way or another, it’s so worth it.

How long did it take to do the tour?

Hi Kim, I spent about 4 hours on my tour.

Hi, how much was the tour? I’m going in December and would love to do it

Hi Sarah, it’s around $100 in addition to your theme park admission. Prices can change at any time but you can confirm when you call in to make your reservation 30 days in advance.

I did a $160 tour at Disneyland that took me inside Walt Disney's 500-square-foot apartment, and it was totally worth it

  • I took a 90-minute private tour of Main Street USA at Disneyland that costs $160 a person.
  • Guides on Walt's Main Street Story share fun facts and take people inside Walt Disney's apartment.
  • It was incredible, and I definitely think it's worth it for Disney fans.

Walt's Main Street Story is one of several tour options at Disneyland.

walt disney tour disneyland

Disneyland offers several tour options ranging from small-group excursions to VIP guides with priority access to attractions.

Walt's Main Street Story is one of the most affordable tours at $160 a person. Theme-park admission is not included in the cost and a park reservation is required.

It's offered seven days a week with a few time options per day.

The guided tours were temporarily suspended amid the start of the coronavirus pandemic, and some updates were made since reopening. It's now broken up into three parts: a historical-based tour of Main Street USA, a tour of Walt Disney's apartment, and snacks on the apartment's patio.

It's a small-group, intimate walking tour meant to share hidden details and little-known facts.

Check-in was located in Town Square.

walt disney tour disneyland

I arrived at Disneyland about 20 minutes prior to the tour's start time.

Check-in was located just past the park entrance on the left side of Town Square. The sectioned-off area was clearly marked and there was plenty of seating for guests participating in the tour.

We were presented with a commemorative lanyard and a soft drink as we waited. At this point, we also got personal speaker devices so we'd be able to clearly hear our tour guide even in the crowds.

Our guide began promptly at the tour time.

walt disney tour disneyland

Our guide was a perfect blend of informative and engaging. His relaxed mood set the tone for the tour and allowed guests to feel comfortable asking questions.

We started at the flagpole and made our way down Main Street.

walt disney tour disneyland

The historical portion of the tour takes place along Main Street USA and is focused on how Walt's own hometown of Marceline, Missouri, served as inspiration for Disneyland .

We began the tour in the hub at the foot of Main Street's flagpole. The guide recited Walt's opening-day speech before sharing some facts about the flagpole and its subsequent tributes in Tokyo Disney and Shanghai Disney.

Then we made our way down Main Street in its entirety — with several stops along the way — before looping back to the front of the park.

Our tour guide pointed out little nods to Marceline, Missouri.

walt disney tour disneyland

Along the way, our guide pointed out nods to Walt's hometown all over Main Street.

One of my favorite Easter eggs was an employee badge adorned on a prop ticket-booth attendant named Tilly at the movie theater.

The Disney name tags include the employee's name and hometown, and Marceline was listed as Tilly's hometown.

We also learned that Tilly is given refurbishments throughout the year.

He also alerted us to some very special windows.

walt disney tour disneyland

Along Main Street, there are windows guests would otherwise pass by that are actually dedicated to important figures in the history of Disney.

These include Disney Imagineers like Bob Gurr, who designed the Matterhorn Bobsleds, and set designers like Emile Kuri, who won an Oscar for his work on "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea." Walt also enlisted Kuri to design the interior of his Disneyland apartment.

Some of the windows even come alive throughout the day with noise effects.

We also spotted one of the oldest orchestrions.

walt disney tour disneyland

Our guide pointed to the Penny Arcade, which houses one of the oldest orchestrions in the world.

The self-playing pipe organ dates back to 1907, and it plays mini concerts of popular Disney tunes every seven minutes.

Our guide also informed us of other nods we could check out on our own.

walt disney tour disneyland

I really enjoyed that our tour guide pointed out other Easter eggs we could explore on our own after the tour.

One of my favorites was photos of the original Walt Disney apartment lamp, which can be found in the Disneyland Story Presenting Great Moments With Mr. Lincoln attraction.

I'm an avid Disney history fan, but even I learned a few new things.

walt disney tour disneyland

My favorite tidbit was hearing about Walt's late-night walks along Main Street in his pajamas.

Our guide pointed out a shop that was previously Sunkist Citrus House, which is where Walt would satisfy his midnight cravings.

The highlight was visiting Walt's actual apartment.

walt disney tour disneyland

There are very few ways to visit Walt's Disneyland apartment, housed above Disneyland's fire station. But this tour guarantees it.

Previously, I'd only seen photos of it and was really excited to step inside history.

The Main Street apartment was built for Walt and his wife, Lillian, because of the demands of his job in the theme park. He believed he was wasting too much time driving back and forth to his home.

The 500-square-foot space was designed during the mid-20th century, but the décor evokes a turn-of-the-century Victorian vibe. Almost everything was a bright berry (Lillian's favorite color), and there were tons of roses (her favorite flower) in the decor.

It was more or less one big room that actually felt pretty small. It was surprising to learn that Walt and his wife Lillian would frequently entertain 10 grandchildren in that space.

We weren't able to use our phones or take cameras in the apartment, but a professional photographer was on hand to take our photo in front of the famous lamp. A download of this photo was included with tour admission.

We were given plenty of time to explore.

walt disney tour disneyland

The apartment was small but full of so many artifacts. Our guide informed us that it's a mix of actual pieces that were there during Walt's residence and continuously updated props to give it a homey feel.

I loved learning that famed Imagineer Kim Irvine, daughter of the voice and face of Madame Leota from the Haunted Mansion , is in charge of switching out the pieces.

One of my favorite pieces in the apartment was an original Regina music box that Walt gave his wife as a present.

It was also surreal seeing the famous lamp.

Dating back to the park's opening, a lamp has been in the window of the apartment overlooking Main Street.

Originally, when it was lit, it signaled to employees that Walt was in the park. But since his passing in 1966, the lamp has continuously stayed on, even throughout the park's closures.

The lamp itself has been switched out over the years, but the sentiment remains the same.

I was surprised by many of the apartment's features.

walt disney tour disneyland

I was awestruck by the bathroom that was in pristine condition — guests aren't allowed to step inside. It featured a four-headed shower, which our guide pointed out was revolutionary at that time. You could also spot a sealed-off section of flooring where the fire pole below has previously come up into the apartment.

I was also surprised to learn that the couple slept on two separate sofa-bed pullouts. These were positioned on opposite sides of the living space and distinguished by photos of Walt's mother and Lillian's mother over the small sleeping quarters.

The apartment's main kitchen area was a single-counter kitchenette equipped with a small refrigerator and sink. It might be surprising that this sufficed the Disney family, but Walt's tastes were supposedly very simple.

There was a mini sandwich press that he'd use to make grilled cheese . He was also able to ring up employees to bring him food from anywhere in the park.

Glass baby bottles used by the couple's grandkids were also on display in the kitchen.

The tour concluded on the apartment's patio.

walt disney tour disneyland

After spending around 30 minutes in the apartment, we were able to relax on the adjoining outdoor private patio.

Here, we enjoyed more soft drinks and a cookie emblazoned with the tour's logo. We were also free to ask the tour guide any additional questions we might have.

The view from the patio was especially stunning during golden hour, and we could spot Space Mountain in the distance.

Any Disney fan should definitely do this once.

walt disney tour disneyland

The price is steep, but I would highly recommend any Disney fan that loves the history of the company and theme parks to take the tour once.

Our guide was knowledgeable and informative while still entertaining. And the highlight was spending time in Walt's apartment — I was happy they didn't rush this aspect of the tour.

The complimentary souvenir lanyard was also a nice touch.

Walt Disneys Main Street Story Tour Apartment

During the construction of the now Disneyland Resort, Walt Disney built an apartment on the second floor of the Main Street Fire Station, just inside the entrance to the Disney Park. Throughout Disneyland’s years of operation, the light from a lamp placed within the window overlooking the walkway would signal to Cast Members that Disney himself was present at the Happiest Place on Earth.

Following Disney’s untimely death in 1966, Disneyland began a tradition of leaving the light on 24/7 in homage to his memory. They even swapped it out for a Christmas Tree with glowing lights in a charming move during the holiday season at Walt’s first Magic Kingdom.

For $135, this tour gets you one of Disneyland's rarest experiences

T he Disneyland Railroad is, undeniably, one of the attractions that form the fundamental character of Disneyland . It was an opening day feature, and every day since 1955,  Main Street Station has been the very first thing that guests see when they walk through the park gates.

There are fun things to see on the 18-minute “grand circle tour” in covered, open-air train cars around the park, including an enormous diorama of the Grand Canyon and fantastically retro dinosaur animatronics that date all the way back to the 1964 World’s Fair. But Disneyland being Disneyland, there’s also a private train car known only to die-hard park fans and people who have been lucky enough to get a VIP peek. Just seeing the inside of the Lilly Belle is a coveted experience — but getting to ride the whole Disneyland Railroad loop inside that luxury train car is a whole other level.

Recently, the park brought back a pre-pandemic train-themed tour that not only gives you passage in the private car but takes you “backstage” (behind the scenes in the employees-only section of the park) to see a place normally off-limits to park guests.

The  Disneyland Railroad Guided Tour is for two kinds of people: passionate train enthusiasts and people who devour Disneyland history like it’s popcorn from the Main Street Popcorn Cart. If you’re not in one of those groups, it might not be for you. The tour costs $135 per person, and that doesn’t include park admission. It does, however, include breakfast (a warm cinnamon bun with apple compote and a juice), a souvenir pin and a keepsake print of a Disneyland Railroad map.

As you might have guessed, I am firmly in the second category. If there’s a Disney experience available (going into the private Disney family apartment above the fire station, touring Walt Disney’s office at the studios, signing the secret guest book at Storybook Land Canal Boats), I’m going to do it. Besides experiencing the $18,000 dinner at 21 Royal , touring the Lilly Belle has been at the very top of my list.

I might not be into trains as a category, but I am very into the Disneyland Railroad. It’s among my favorite Disneyland attractions, not only because it’s a delightful break from a hot day but because it’s part of the fabric of the park. Stepping onto the train feels like stepping into history and into Walt Disney’s favorite part of his “happiest place on earth.”

“I just want it to look like nothing else in the world,”  Walt Disney said while describing his vision for the yet-to-be-built park. “And it should be surrounded by a train.”

The train is also one of my best memories of Disneyland. On the reopening day after the park’s pandemic closure, April 30, 2022, I stood at the Disneyland gates with other eager, masked park fans. The crowd was buzzing with energy — for me, it was nerves, excitement and a big dose of catharsis — that we could barely contain. Before the gates opened, before we saw anything at all, the train whistle blasted across the silence. The crowd erupted in a chorus of screams and cheers as the engine chugged into view. It was one of the most beautiful moments of collective joy I’ve ever experienced. We heard it, and we knew we had made it through the worst of something very, very hard.

We could ride the train that day, but we could definitely not get into the Lilly Belle. That has been largely closed since the park’s reopening, except for a few lucky people who happened to be in the right place at the right time. (I’ve never been one of them, but I’ve seen photos.)

Our group was small — just four guests and a guide, though groups can be up to 10 people — and our tour started in front of Main Street Station. The front half of the tour was largely for the train nerds; there were a lot of details about engine models and locomotive companies that were above my pay grade. But there were also a lot of interesting tidbits about how trains figure into Disney lore, like how Walt first drew Mickey Mouse on a train to Los Angeles, and how Imagineers who were also train enthusiasts shared their backyard train setups with the boss and inspired Disney to build his own ride-on train in his backyard (which he had to move houses to fit). That train line was called the Carolwood Pacific Railroad, named for the street the Disneys lived on, and the locomotive was named the Lilly Belle, after Walt’s wife, Lillian Disney. (If you want to see a grown man be the happiest person there has ever been while his family patiently indulges his childlike passion, look up photos of Disney riding his backyard train .)

The Lilly Belle that exists in the park today was modeled after the Lilly Belle at Disney’s house, but it wasn’t installed until 1976, 10 years after Walt Disney’s death. Lillian Disney oversaw the creation of the train car, and it has her personal touches, like the prized roses she grew, as decor accents throughout. We would get to ride in it, but first we were going backstage to see the “round house” where the trains are kept. It sounded exciting, but we really only saw this at a distance and for just a few minutes. Still, being backstage at Disneyland at all was thrilling.

Next, it was time for the main event. We boarded at Toontown Station because it’s fully accessible. Stepping into the car, which I had hoped to do for so long, felt like a huge deal. Inside, there are plush red velvet chairs and couches, some bought at auction from the Queen Mary in the 1970s, before Disney owned the ship and tried to make a Haunted Mansion at sea . There are also Victorian-inspired touches like antique glassware and a rose-embroidered sun screen, as well as a portrait of Walt and Lillian Disney on display. As we rode, our guide gave us more information about the Lilly Belle. It was installed as a “presidential parlor car” to host VIPs — our guide said a former president of Japan and members of the British royal family had taken the grand circle tour in it. The ride was lovely, but before I knew it, we had made the full 18-minute loop and it was time to leave. That’s when our guide gave us the keepsake print and sent us on our way. I enjoyed the whole thing, but I’m not sure I’d hand over $135 to do it again.

But to replicate some of the experiences, I don’t have to. When you take the Monorail or the Disneyland Railroad, you can clearly see as much of the round house as we saw on the tour. When you get to Tomorrowland and are approaching Autopia, look left instead of right, and you’ll see a big green building with train tracks leading into it.

If you can find it, the caboose has cushioned benches but is otherwise pretty plain inside. As soon as the tour was over, I waited at the station for the next train to come in, and there it was: an enclosed caboose with no one inside it. “Are people allowed to ride in that?” I asked a cast member. “Sure,” he said. “Just step right in.”

walt disney tour disneyland

After a weekend of can’t-miss programming, D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event presented by Visa, will conclude on Sunday, August 11, with the Disney Legends Awards Ceremony. The Disney Legends Award honors artists and visionaries throughout the company’s history who have pushed the envelope of creativity, challenged conventional wisdom, and broken the restraints of the status quo in search of new possibilities and excellence. The ceremony will take place at 5 p.m. at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

“To be named a Disney Legend is the highest honor our company can bestow on anyone, reserved for those whose talent and achievement have earned them an enduring place in our history,” said Bob Iger, Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company. “The fourteen individuals to be honored as Disney Legends this year have each made extraordinary creative contributions across the worlds of Disney and we look forward to celebrating them at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event.”

This year’s honorees include Colleen Atwood, Angela Bassett, Martha Blanding, James L. Brooks, James Cameron, Jamie Lee Curtis, Miley Cyrus, Steve Ditko, Harrison Ford, Mark Henn, Frank Oz, Kelly Ripa, Joe Rohde, and John Williams. Ryan Seacrest, the host of American Top 40, as well as American Idol and Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve on ABC, will host the 2024 Disney Legends Awards Ceremony that will be filled with heartwarming tributes to each of the honorees, along with special guests, performances, and a legendary production like no other.

The Disney Legends Awards program is a 37-year tradition of The Walt Disney Company, which began when Fred MacMurray ( The Shaggy Dog , The Absent-Minded Professor , The Happiest Millionaire ) was honored in 1987. The awards ceremony is just one of the many spectacular events fans can enjoy during the three-day D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in August 2024.

The 2024 Disney Legends Award honorees (listed alphabetically) are:

COLLEEN ATWOOD

walt disney tour disneyland

For Colleen Atwood, designing costumes for movies both fantastical and fabulous is like creating her own Wonderland. This prolific costume designer has been nominated for an Academy Award ® a dozen times and has won four Oscars ® , including for her visually evocative work in Alice in Wonderland (2010). Born in Ellensburgh Washington, Colleen briefly studied painting at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. Working in high fashion retail at designer boutiques, her strong sense of visual style enabled her a start as a fashion advisor. Through that world, Colleen was offered an unexpected opportunity to be a production assistant in the art department on Ragtime (1981). In New York, Colleen was fortunate enough to align with many New York filmmakers such as Jonathan Demme, Michael Apted, and Michael Mann. Colleen was introduced to filmmaker Tim Burton—and soon would be Burton’s go-to costume designer. Their first film together, Edward Scissorhands, was the first of 12 Burton movies she designed costumes for, including Disney’s live-action reimagining of Alice in Wonderland (2010) and Dumbo (2019). The upcoming Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024) will mark the creative duo’s 13th collaboration. For the over 50 films and TV series, she has costumed, many of them center on visually stunning imaginary environments that call for a lot of world-building. It’s Colleen’s ability to cross and blend genres in her approach to character costuming that has enabled her work in such fantastic films as Planet of the Apes (2001), Into the Woods (2014) , Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016) , Lady and the Tramp (2019) , and The Little Mermaid (2023) .

ANGELA BASSETT

walt disney tour disneyland

It takes a strong woman to portray a strong female character, and Angela Bassett fits the bill. From her breakout role as single mother Reva Devereaux in John Singleton’s Boyz n the Hood (1991) ,  to her portrayal of fierce Queen Ramonda of Wakanda in Marvel’s Black Panther films, Angela’s unmistakable voice, signature delivery, and grand presence command immediate attention. Born in New York City, Angela lived in North Carolina until the age of 4, when her family moved to St. Petersburg, Florida. The first Black student attending Boca Ciega High School to be admitted to the National Honors Society, Angela went on to Yale, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in African American Studies in 1980 and a Master of Fine Arts from the Yale School of Drama in 1983. In 1988, she moved to Los Angeles. Angela has portrayed many real-life characters, including Coretta Scott King and Rosa Parks, but it was her powerful portrayal of Tina Turner in Touchstone Pictures’ What’s Love Got to Do with It (1993) that earned her numerous accolades, including an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe ® for Best Actress, making her the first Black performer to win in this category. She received two Emmy ® nominations for outstanding narrator for National Geographic’s The Flood (2018) and the Disney+ docuseries The Imagineering Story (2019), and was nominated for her second Academy Award, this time in the Best Supporting Actress category, for the role of Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022) . She is also the star and executive producer of the hit drama 9-1-1 , voiced Dorothea Williams in Disney and Pixar’s Academy Award-winning animated feature Soul (2020), and received an Honorary Academy Award in 2024.

MARTHA BLANDING

walt disney tour disneyland

Martha Blanding helped put the “happy” in The Happiest Place on Earth. As the first permanent full-time Black Tour Guide, Martha personified the philosophy of creating happiness for others while embodying the principles of hospitality and courtesy Walt Disney sought to establish for Disneyland Cast Members. Once hired as a Tour Guide, she quickly climbed the ladder to become a VIP Hostess. Martha later became the first-ever Black woman in management at Disneyland as an expert merchandise, candy, and film buyer for 16 years, and later became the senior manager of Disneyland Resort Merchandise Special Events. In this role, she worked with world-renowned artisans, celebrities, and Disney Legends. She was considered one of the few pioneering producers of the Official Disneyana Convention, a forerunner of today’s D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. A co-founder of PULSE, a business employee resource group for Black Disneyland Cast Members, Martha served as a trusted mentor to fellow employees. Adding to the many “firsts” during her career before retiring in 2022, Martha was the first Black Cast Member to commemorate 50 years with the Disneyland Resort, and now becomes the first Black Disney Parks employee designated a Disney Legend.

JAMES L. BROOKS

walt disney tour disneyland

Acclaimed for character driven, writer centric projects that deftly combine comedy and poignancy—such as 20th Century’s Broadcast News (1987)—James L. Brooks is a TV and film icon responsible for some of the most beloved entertainment projects of all time. James made one of the most impressive directorial debuts in film history with Terms of Endearment (1983), for which the multi-hyphenate took home three Oscars for writing, producing, and directing. Growing up in New Jersey, James’ career trajectory kicked off as a writer for CBS News in New York. When he moved to Los Angeles in 1965, a chance meeting with established writer Allan Burns led to his writing for television comedies, and before long, James created the groundbreaking ABC series Room 222 in 1969 and Taxi in 1978. In 1986, James founded his production company, Gracie Films , where he and his team are trailblazers in the world of television. At James’ invitation, Matt Groening created animated interstitials for the company’s The Tracey Ullman Show featuring a dysfunctional family, which led to a full-fledged animated series—the first since the 1960s— The Simpsons, in 1989. The longest-running primetime scripted show in television history, The Simpsons quickly exploded into a cultural phenomenon. Currently in its 35th season, The Simpsons has won 37 Emmy Awards. James also co-produced and co-wrote The Simpsons Movie in 2007. James, who continues to serve as executive producer of the misadventures of the animated citizens of Springfield, maintains that the series has not outlived its popularity, especially now with it streaming on Disney+. Brooks is currently working on his next feature film for 20th Century Studios, Ella McCay .

JAMES CAMERON

walt disney tour disneyland

James Cameron is an acclaimed filmmaker, ocean explorer, and environmental advocate. As a director, a writer, and a producer, he’s responsible for some of the world’s most memorable films including The Terminator (1984), Aliens (1986), The Abyss (1989), Titanic (1997), Avatar (2009), and Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), the latter three being three among the four highest grossing films of all time. Titanic alone won 11 Oscars, including James’ for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Editing. He is currently in post-production on Avatar 3, and in pre-production on Avatar 4 and 5. Teaming up with Walt Disney Imagineering in 2011, James helped to steer the creation of an Avatar -inspired area of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. The result, Pandora – The World of Avatar, is an area that immerses guests in an interactive environment that brings the world of the film series to life, and features the popular attractions Avatar Flight of Passage and Na’vi River Journey . Under his Earthship Productions banner, James has produced 12 documentaries, including six about Titanic, as well as three other deep ocean exploration films, most in partnership with National Geographic. He executive produces National Geographic’s  Secrets series, including the Emmy Award-winning Secrets of the Whales and Emmy-nominated Secrets of the Elephants , with Octopus launching on Earth Day 2024. He also executive produced the OceanXplorers series, due in Fall 2024 from National Geographic.

JAMIE LEE CURTIS

walt disney tour disneyland

Born in Santa Monica, California, to Hollywood power couple Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis, Jamie Lee Curtis excelled as a performer early on, winning people over with her exuberant personality. Originally planning to major in law enforcement, an acting manager suggested Jamie Lee try auditioning. To her surprise, she was signed to a contract at Universal, one of the last performers to be so engaged. She was later cast as iconic “Scream Queen” Laurie Strode in John Carpenter’s thrilling classic Halloween (1978), establishing her trajectory as a bona fide movie star. The Oscar winner has demonstrated her versatility with a variety of captivating roles over her career, including suburban housewife-turned-international-spy Helen Tasker in True Lies (1994) and no-nonsense mom Tess Coleman in Disney’s remake of the classic body-swap comedy Freaky Friday (2003). In 2023, Jamie Lee returned to both Disney and the macabre genre to portray the legendary Madame Leota in Haunted Mansion , inspired by the classic Disneyland theme park attraction. The author of 13 best-selling books, all exploring core childhood issues, she is also the founder and CEO of My Hand in Yours™, a charitable organization that offers comfort and celebratory gifts where 100% of every sale is donated directly to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. For her many performances, Jamie Lee has received a British Academy Film Award, two Golden Globes, and nominations for a Primetime Emmy and a Grammy ® . Most recently, she won an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022).

STEVE DITKO

walt disney tour disneyland

Originally hailing from Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Steve Ditko’s love for comics began at a young age. After serving in the U.S. Army, where he drew comics for the Army newsletter, one of his idols, Batman artist Jerry Robinson, became his mentor. By the early 1950s, his first work appeared in print, and shortly thereafter made his way to Atlas Comics, the precursor of Marvel Comics. The artist would quickly leave his mark, leading Disney Legend Stan Lee to rechristen Amazing Adventures as Amazing Adult Fantasy (later Amazing Fantasy ) to showcase Steve’s talents. In 1962, that collaboration led to one of the most popular comic book characters of all time. The introduction of Spider-Man in Amazing Fantasy #15 stands as one of the landmarks of both Steve’s career and Marvel history. Steve went on to co-create most of Spider-Man’s now-infamous rogues’ gallery and re-envisioned many of Marvel’s iconic characters to what we know today. He redesigned Iron Man’s armor into the popular red and gold design, and in the Hulk comics, he codified Bruce Banner’s transformations to be a function of his anger. It is perhaps with Doctor Strange, Master of the Mystic Arts, that Steve truly expressed his visionary impulses—the early stories in Strange Tales could only have come from the mind of Steve Ditko. He left Marvel to pursue other work in 1966 but returned in 1979. In the 1990s, Steve helped to co-create all-new characters, including Speedball and Squirrel Girl. One of the greatest artist-writer talents in comic book history, Steve’s imagination and creative vision changed the comics industry and super hero storytelling forever.

HARRISON FORD

Harrison Ford has portrayed some of the most iconic action heroes to ever burn up the big screen. After appearing in a small but impressive role in American Graffiti (1973), directed by fellow Disney Legend George Lucas, Harrison proved to be perfect for the role of Han Solo, cynical smuggler and captain of the Millennium Falcon in Star Wars: A New Hope (1977). He would go on to portray Han in all three episodes of the original Star Wars trilogy. Harrison also stars as the titular character in the blockbuster Indiana Jones films.

Over his decades-long career, Harrison has been widely honored for his many contributions to the film industry, including the British Academy of Film and Television Arts’ Albert R. Broccoli Britannia Award, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Cecil B. DeMille Award, the American Film Institute’s Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2023 was the recipient of an honorary Palme d’Or from the Cannes Film Festival.

Some of his most notable film credits include an Oscar-nominated performance in Witness (1985), along with Blade Runner (1982); 20th Century’s Working Girl (1988); Presumed Innocent (1990);  Patriot Games (1992); The Fugitive (1993); Clear and Present Danger (1994); Sabrina (1995); Air Force One (1997); Touchstone Pictures’ Six Days, Seven Nights (1998); What Lies Beneath (2000); Morning Glory (2010); 42 (2013); Blade Runner 2049 (2017); and 20th Century Studios’ The Call of the Wild (2020). Harrison also stars in the hit television shows 1923 and Shrinking .

More recently, Harrison returned to a couple of his most celebrated roles. For the fourth time in the film series, he portrayed Han Solo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), and once again donned Indy’s fedora in the fifth Indiana Jones installment, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023). Harrison will also appear as President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in the Marvel Studios live-action adventure Captain America: Brave New World , to be released in 2025.

Mark Henn joined Walt Disney Animation Studios in 1980, where he became an assistant animator on The Fox and the Hound (1981). His first major assignment was animating Disney’s most beloved character, Mickey Mouse, in Mickey’s Christmas Carol (1983), marking Mickey’s first big-screen appearance in 30 years. Mark would go on to serve as the supervising animator for young Simba as well as five female leads, more than any artist in the history of the studio: Ariel (supervised with fellow Disney Legend Glen Keane), Belle (supervised with James Baxter), Jasmine, Mulan, and Tiana. He also animated Simba from The Lion King (1994), the title character in Pocahontas (1995), and Giselle from Enchanted (2007). Most recently, Mark has helped a whole new generation of Disney animators bring “the illusion of life” to character animation in CG features such as Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018). He was lead 2D animator on Big Hero 6 (2014) and Frozen (2013), and served as a 2D animator for “Mini Maui” in Moana (2016). In 2000, Mark brought his vast animation experience to directing with the acclaimed short John Henry . In 2013 he received the prestigious Winsor McCay award for lifetime achievement, ASIFA’s highest award in animation. And in 2018, befitting his longtime association with Mickey Mouse, Mark was commissioned to paint Mickey’s official portrait for the character’s 90th anniversary. From Mickey to a little mermaid and Mini Maui, the enchantment of Disney animation is personal for this animator.

Retiring in 2021 as a portfolio creative executive with 40 years at Walt Disney Imagineering, Joe Rohde was the overall creative executive and supervising designer for Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park, including later expansions such as Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain and Pandora – The World of Avatar. Joe’s other notable projects include The Adventurers Club (formerly a part of Pleasure Island at Walt Disney World); Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa in Ko Olina, Hawaiʻi, and Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! at Disney’s California Adventure Park. Joe grew up in Honolulu and the San Fernando Valley, creating art and theater sets, acting in school productions, and exploring film backlots with his cameraman father. He attended Occidental College, graduated with a major in studio art, and went to work as teacher, where at 25, he was recruited by Walt Disney Imagineering. His first assignment was as a model builder for the Mexico Pavilion at EPCOT. Joe’s big Imagineering break came with the development of a certain animal-focused theme park for the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park would prove to be a celebration of animals, a passionate argument for the coexistence of conservation and communities, and a recognition of the essential role that ecosystems play in our existence. Joe was instrumental in creating the Disney Conservation Fund, which has disbursed over $120 million in grants to projects worldwide. He is well known for his intensive focus on the philosophy of narrative placemaking and experiential storytelling. Joe now uses his art to raise funds for both international conservation and local community projects. In 2022 he received the Disney Conservation Fund’s first Conservation Legacy Award and has appeared on numerous documentaries about Imagineering.

JOHN WILLIAMS

The unforgettable music of John Williams is the soundtrack of our lives. In a career spanning more than six decades, this most prolific of movie composers has created the music for more than 100 films including all nine Star Wars saga films and all five Indiana Jones films. Born and raised in New York, John moved to Los Angeles with his family in 1948. Venturing back to the East Coast to attend The Juilliard School, he later returned to Los Angeles to commence his film career. Early in his career, John composed the music for more than 200 television films and numerous television series including Lost in Space for 20th Century Fox. John’s artistic partnership with director Steven Spielberg, now in its 50th year, led to an introduction to fellow Disney Legend George Lucas and what became the biggest film phenomenon of its time, Star Wars (1977). John has received five Academy Awards and 54 Oscar nominations—most recently for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023)—making him the Academy’s most-nominated living person and the second-most-nominated person in the history of the Oscars, a number second only to Walt Disney. He has also received seven British Academy Awards (BAFTA), 26 Grammys, four Golden Globes, and five Emmys, as well as the National Medal of Arts, the Kennedy Center Honors, and an honorary knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II.

Disney Legend honorees receive a two-foot-tall bronze Disney Legends sculpture that signifies the imagination, creativity, and magic they have brought to the company. Disney Legends Award recipients will also participate in a handprint ceremony at the end of the event, and their bronzed prints will be displayed in the Disney Legends Plaza at the company’s Burbank headquarters.

Including this year’s honorees, a total of 318 Disney Legends have been named. Past Disney Legends include Tim Allen, Dame Julie Andrews, Howard Ashman, Kristen Bell, Robert Downey Jr., Annette Funicello, Whoopi Goldberg, Sir Elton John, Dame Angela Lansbury, George Lucas, Steve Martin, Alan Menken, Hayley Mills, Fess Parker, Ellen Pompeo, Robin Roberts, Marty Sklar, Dick Van Dyke, Barbara Walters, Ming-Na Wen, Betty White, and Robin Williams, among many others.

Disneyland | club 33 manager dies in ‘tragic’ disneyland accident, police are investigating the traffic collision in a backstage area of the anaheim theme park..

“We are heartbroken by the loss of Bonnye and offer our sincere condolences to everyone who cared for her,” Disneyland Resort President Ken Potrock said in a statement. “At this time, we are focused on supporting her family and our cast members through this tragic event and making sure they have the resources they need.”

Anaheim Police and Anaheim Fire & Rescue responded to a traffic collision on Wednesday, June 5 at 11:30 a.m. in a backstage area of Disneyland, according to spokesperson Sgt. Jonathan McClintock.

Police and fire personnel found a female Disneyland employee who had fallen from a moving golf cart and struck her head, according to McClintock. She was transported to a local hospital in grave condition and later died from her injuries, according to McClintock.

Bonnye Mavis Lear, 60, of Fullerton, died on Friday, June 7, according to Orange County Coroner spokesperson Sgt. Frank Gonzalez.

Anaheim police detectives are investigating the traffic collision.

Rae Delgado, a Disney California Adventure attractions cast member, wrote on Facebook that Lear suffered a fractured skull and brain swelling as a result of the accident.

“Bonnye was traveling on a rear-facing seat of a golf cart along with 3 passengers behind Critter Country,” Delgado wrote on Facebook. “The driver of the vehicle was driving at least 20 mph on the route. The golf cart came in contact with a bump/dip in the road which caused Bonnye to react immediately. As she went to grab the handrail, it gave way and sent her out of the vehicle.”

Delgado, who lives in Costa Mesa, says her fellow cast member deserves compassion and justice – not silence.

“Managers are telling CMs to not speak about the circumstances of Bonnye’s death to others,” Delgado wrote on Facebook. “They’re asking for silence. They want it to be forgotten.”

Club 33 employees were “terribly upset” after being notified of the death of their fellow cast member, Disneyland parlance for employees. Lear, a 24-year Disneyland employee, worked in membership support services at the members-only club.

Disneyland bills the private Club 33 in New Orleans Square as exclusive, world class and shrouded in mystery. Club 33 was inspired by the VIP lounges Walt Disney experienced at the 1964 New York World’s Fair where It’s a Small World and Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln first debuted. The private Disneyland club opened in May 1967 a few months after Disney’s death in December 1966.

I used to work with Bonnye, and she was quite literally the kindest human who worked at the Disneyland Resort. This is truly very sad for her family and fellow Cast at the Club. 😔😔😔 https://t.co/G7gXAVFQCr pic.twitter.com/KkHyh9gVXD — Just Ask Danny (@just_ask_danny) June 8, 2024

Disney theme parks vlogger Just Ask Danny used to work with Lear at Disneyland.

“She was quite literally the kindest human who worked at the Disneyland Resort,” he wrote on Twitter. “This is truly very sad for her family and fellow Cast at the Club.”
