We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

On many nights, the gourmet restaurants where we dine offer specially prepared limited or fixed menus featuring a delicious selection of authentic regional cuisine.

While many of the routes on this trip are low in mileage, some sections may feel more challenging due to the mountainous terrain and resulting elevation changes. Most routes begin with steep climbs out of town (1–3 miles long) and end with a long sharp descent. To stay off the beaten path, we often walk on cobblestone mule tracks and rocky terrain, occasionally following slightly overgrown paths that may not be well defined.

A guide to Lake Como's highlights — villas, promenades and aperitivo spots not to miss

The western branch of this northern Italian lake is its highlight, home to romantic villas and revamped waterfront promenades in pretty Como city.

A view of the scenery in lake como. The skies are clear, and the water is calm and blue. A green hill can be seen on one side with colourful villas dotted.

Lake Como conveys notions of easy elegance and the Italian art of slow living, and has come to stand for something bigger than it is. Officially called Lario, Italy ’s third-biggest lake has been drawing visitors since the 18th century, when it was a popular stop for European nobles on their grand tours. More recently, it stepped into the spotlight as the backdrop for films including Ocean’s Twelve and Casino Royale . But the lake’s prestige dates to Roman times, when Julius Ceasar drained a swamp at its southwestern end, strategically located near Alpine passes, and funded the creation of a city known as Novum Comum.

It laid the foundation for Como, the main hub to this day and the reason why the lake is commonly known as Como. This spring is the best time to visit the city in over a decade, as sections of its waterfront sidewalks, which had been cordoned off for expansion since 2008, are once again open to walkers. The centre is dominated by the azure dome of the Duomo di Como , one of the last gothic cathedrals built in the country. Behind it is Teatro Sociale , and to one side is the shopping street of Via Vittorio Emanuele II. It’s a good place to pick up a souvenir: mulberry trees were planted on Lake Como’s hills in the 15th century, and boutiques like A Picci sell handkerchiefs and scarves using their silk.

Next to the shop, Via Lambertenghi leads to Via Alessandro Volta , named after the physicist credited as the inventor of the electric battery. The townhouse where he was born in 1745 is marked with a plaque, and around it are some of the most coveted addresses of the time. This is not least thanks to their giardini pensili — gardens built on the Roman walls that once guarded the city centre.

Equally evocative is Passeggiata Lino Gelpi , between the lake and shorefront private gardens. The path’s name pays tribute to the 19th-century mayor who reclaimed a strip of land from villa owners to pave Como’s most scenic public footpaths. It’s a front-row spot from which to watch the lake’s seaplanes land, and it’s especially lovely in spring, when wisteria blooms along the banks.

Continue walking along the waterside road for half an hour to Cernobbio , one of the lake’s most popular resorts. Local Comaschi come to eat at Harry’s Bar , in a piazza by the shore; it serves whitefish from the lake, but the pick is the sole meuniere, floured and pan fried to crispy perfection. Alternatively, taxis wind up the hillside to Il Gatto Nero . It serves specialities from the surrounding region, such as ravioli with ossobuco and saffron, and has become popular among visiting celebrities thanks to its view of the lake.

For a different perspective, take to the water. Ferries link Como to the Alto Lago (‘High Lake’), its northernmost shore. But, if budget allows, the transport mode of choice are Riva runabouts . High-end hotels offer private rides on these mahogany speedboats as part of their activity programmes. Otherwise, companies like Como Classic Boats pick visitors up from almost any hamlet with a dock.

Among the most prettiest is Torno , on the western shore, with red-tiled roofs and a waterfront bell tower. It’s opposite Passalaqua ; built in the 18th century for a scion of local nobility, this villa was crowned the world’s top hotel by The World’s 50 Best in 2023, a year after opening. A glimpse is all you’ll get, as only guests are allowed in, but as an alternative visit Villa d’Este , the lake’s historic grand dame hotel. Further down the shores, highlights include Villa Carlotta and neoclassical Villa del Balbianello , which juts out on a promontory in Ossuccio.

A former fishing community, Ossuccio is also a gateway to Isola Comacina and UNESCO-listed Sacro Monte di Ossuccio , 14 chapels leading to a hillside sanctuary. From its waterfront, the view is a snapshot of what makes Lake Como so alluring: the unassuming hamlets next to larger-than-life villas, and the green, wooded hills sloping down to the deep-blue water. In the distance, always in view, are the Alps. From the Roman Empire to modern-day Hollywood, it’s a scene that’s charmed through the ages.

3 highlights not to miss in Lake Como

1. Teatro Sociale Como’s 19th-century theatre has always had a special affinity with the opera. This summer, it’ll join other venues across the country in marking 100 years since the death of Giacomo Puccini with an open-air production of Turandot, the composer’s final masterpiece.

2. Villa Carlotta The 20-acre botanical garden of Villa Carlotta is a much-loved retreat on the lake. There are monumental trees, a citrus tunnel and a path among the ferns, but it’s most famous for its azaleas, which bloom into full cushions of red, white and pink for a few weeks each May.

3. Isola Comacina The lake’s only island is mostly uninhabited, but its trails lead past olives, lindens and laurels, as well as houses for short-term artists in residence. Every June, the popular San Giovanni Festival reenacts a fire that devastated the island in the 12th century with a red-tinted firework display.

Our Italy walking tour begins in the cosmopolitan city of Milan. First we will visit Milan’s famous Piazza Duomo and the nearby Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. There we’ll christen our time Milanese-style with and artisan gelato or the Italian ritual of aperitivo (It’s similar to an American happy hour, but so much more).

Next, we travel together by rail to Rapallo on the lovely Italian Riviera. Rapallo is a charming harbor town with a sunny promenade, sea views, and historic city center. Lovely on its own, Rapallo is the perfect base to explore the coastal villages of Cinque Terre in one direction and gorgeous Portofino in the other. The options for sightseeing are plentiful. We offer guided as well as additional self-guided coastal walks and wanders. Our Italy walking tour Rapallo hotel is a family-owned 4-star perfectly situated in the center of it all.

Lake Como and Villages

After Rapallo, the next stop on our leisurely walking tour is Lake Como. Via private transfer we arrive at the posh village of Bellagio, referred to as the “Pearl of the Lake”, or the laid-back village of Lenno. Both offer tranquil lake views surrounded by the wooded, towering pre-Alps. At our handsome lakefront hotel we will enjoy a welcome aperitivo on the terrace.

Colorful, centuries-old buildings and an array of artisan shops and restaurants make up the many villages dotting the lakeshore. We will visit Bellagio, Varenna, and Lenno, stopping here and there to stroll the promenades. You will have time to visit the stately Villa del Balbianello (as seen in the James Bond film Casino Royale) or picturesque Villa Monastero . The ferries that criss-cross the lake make hopping between villages a breeze.

Our lakeside walks allow you to discover quiet paths and unique views. If you’d prefer to raise your elevation, professional mountain guides may be hired to lead the way. On our final evening we will gather for a farewell dinner to enjoy a final glass of wine and recall adventures achieved.

While on Lake Como, we have a very popular Italian cooking class option. Here you can try your hand at making some of the wonderful dishes you’ve enjoyed along the way. Of course you’ll have to save room for a tasty gelato.

Join us for a fun, relaxing, and delicious vacation in beautiful Italy!

Airport Information

Three international airports serve Milan: Malpensa, Linate, and Bergamo. Malpensa Airport (MXP) is the largest. It usually has the best connections for North American cities. Also, MXP is well connected to Milano Centrale Station by both train and airport busses. You may find information on how to get to Milan from the airport on our blog.

Linate Airport (LIN) is the closest airport to the city. It is located just 7km away from Milano Centrale. From LIN an airport bus can bring you directly to the station.

Bergamo Airport (BGY) is a great choice for anyone traveling on low cost, regional airlines. Specifically, Ryanair, easyJet and Wizz Air offer regular flights to and from Bergamo. Bergamo is also served by shuttles and public transport to Milan’s center.

For departures, we advise arriving to the airport at least 3 hours early for non-european final destinations and at least 2 hours prior for flights within Europe.

Malpensa is located closer to Lake Como than Linate. From Como, Malpensa also enjoys more frequent and better train connections than Bergamo. Generally speaking, you will find it most convenient and cost effective to fly in and out of Malpensa Airport.

Important Notes

Italy walking tour / walking vacation.

Your place on a tour is secured once we have received and confirmed your deposit payment. Before the final payment date, a non-refundable deposit of $500 for walking vacations and $750 for art vacation workshops is required. After the final payment date, the entire tour amount must be received to hold a space on a program.

You may cancel for any reason up to 90 days prior to departure and your non-refundable deposit may be forwarded to a future tour. Any balance on your account will be returned. For complete details please see our Terms and Conditions .

Solo travelers and single supplements

For our guests who are traveling solo... We offer a single supplement for an additional fee if you wish to guarantee a private room.

If you do not request a private room, you will share a twin room with another trip participant of the same sex ( Roomshare ). When you sign up, if no Roomshare is available, a 50% single supplement will be included on your invoice and is due at final payment. However, if a roommate is found before your trip departs, you will be matched and the single supplement will be removed or refunded.

A single supplement guarantees a private room. Whenever possible singles will be placed in the same room type as our double or twin rooms.

Twin / Double Rooms

Please be aware twin beds in Europe may have very little or no space between beds. Also, for double beds, instead of a king or queen mattress, double beds are often two adjoining twin mattresses secured together and made with double bedding.

Walking is a part of this program. It is both a means of visiting locations and a way to immerse yourself in a place. Our scheduled walks are usually 1-2 hours long at a casual pace. We provide a general description of our walks here . It is your responsibility to know your own physical and medical condition with respect to the advisability of participating in a chosen trip. We suggest you prepare by doing at least 1 hour of walking several times per week, and a longer walk at least once per week. Ideally, include walks with elevation change and stairs. (There are always stairs.)

As with any exercise program, we recommend you consult with your physician prior to your arrival regarding the suitability of a walking tour.

Some of our guests find trekking poles helpful on steep or uneven terrain. In Europe they are quite common. Before using them on a vacation, please practice at home. We strongly advise you get comfortable using trekking  poles on familiar paths first.

For additional information on these topics and more, please see our FAQ page .

This is your chance to see one of Italy’s less-visited spots: Puglia , deep in the south of the country. See the best of them on this seven-day holiday, during which you’ll soak up plenty of culture with escorted tours of Lecce’s medieval streets and the Unesco-listed troglodyte cave dwellings at Matera. There’s also time to stroll around the town of Alberobello, with its intriguing cone-roofed huts, and stop at the pilgrimage site of Monte Sant’Angelo; tucking into top-quality food — and wine comes as a given. The price includes flights, four-star accommodation and some meals. There are multiple departures between August and October.

3. Florence and Tuscany tour, Riviera Travel

Just south of Rome, the medieval ruins at Ninfa are festooned with curtains of flowers and allow for wonderfully scented walks beside the river. Castel Gandolfo, whose gardens Pope Francis has declared should be open to the public, is a sight you’ll want to snap a photo or three at — particularly the Giardino del Belvedere, with its cypresses and umbrella pines. The itinerary also features 16th-century Villa Lante and Villa D’Este, the walled town of Viterbo, and a tour of Rome itself, including highlights such as the Colosseum, St Peter’s Square and the Trevi Fountain. Your Duomo tour begins in Piazza del Duomo, under the arches of the Benetton store. Here, among elegant shops, buzzing cafes, and striking historic buildings, you’ll meet up with your guide and fellow group members. Take a moment to admire the towering Duomo’s exterior and tune in as your guide shares a brief overview of its history and architecture. After all, did you know that while construction of the Duomo began in 1386, it wasn’t finished for another six centuries, with the final touches completed in the mid-20th century?

Rooftop Access to Duomo Cathedral

While the Duomo may have taken half a millennium to complete, there was good reason for it. Soaring 108 meters (354 ft) into the sky and adorned with thousands of statues and over one hundred spires, it's truly a sight to behold. But before heading inside, it's time to venture up. Follow your guide to the rooftop access elevator, and in no time, you’ll be greeted by panoramic views of Milan's sprawling cityscape.

In addition, discover just how intricate Duomo’s architecture is, with elaborate Gothic details and ornate sculptures adorning its façade. You'll also have the opportunity to admire the iconic spires up close, each one a masterpiece of craftsmanship and artistry. And don't forget to look out for the golden statue of the Virgin Mary, gleaming atop the highest spire.

Skip-the-line access to Duomo Cathedral

At the beginning of the tour, you might’ve noticed the long queue to get inside the Duomo. But did you know there’s a special entry from the rooftop as well? Thanks to your skip-the-line tickets, no precious time will be wasted as you follow your guide into the vast interior, either via stairs or an elevator, and discover the soaring columns, ornate altars, and magnificent stained-glass windows within.

There’s much more to see than its obvious marvels, though, and thanks to your expert guide, you’ll uncover the cathedral’s rich history and hidden details. Tune in as they reveal the stories behind the countless statues, decorations, and colorful stained-glass windows and learn about the captivating tales of the "Holy Nail" from Jesus' True Cross and the intriguing Sundial Trail with its zodiac signs.

After the guided tour of Duomo's interior, your adventure comes to an end. Yet, there’s no need to hurry away just yet. Feel free to continue your exploration of the Duomo independently or pick your guide’s brain for new delights to discover in Milan. Arrivederci and thanks for joining!

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce Wrap Their Arms Around Each Other as They Enjoy Romantic Getaway in Lake Como

The trip to Italy comes after Kelce supported Swift during her show in Paris

walking tour como italy

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce have taken their romance to Italy.

On Wednesday, May 15, the Grammy-winner and the NFL star, both 34, were spotted with their arms around each other as they walked the streets of Lake Como, Italy, according to photos obtained by PEOPLE.

The sighting comes after Swift wrapped a string of Eras Tour shows in Paris and Kelce supported her from the crowd alongside  Gigi Hadid  and  Bradley Cooper .

During the show, Kelce was spotted filming Swift onstage by fans and his brother Jason Kelce poked fun at him for filming with the flash on during the latest episode of  New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce .

"Well, you got caught, pulling an Ed Kelce move here taking a video with your flash on," Jason, 36, joked, adding, "What are you doing, Trav? You're supposed to be better than this."

Kelce blamed it on his phone's camera settings in the dark stadium, saying, "Oh, you know, the settings on the camera, if it's dark, it's going to automatically put the flash on."

"I was just trying to get some good, you know, some good video, some good memories. I don't give a damn," he added.

Jason agreed, "You probably got great video. The flash makes a big difference," before Kelce quipped, "Did I get clowned for that? Sorry."

During the show, Swift took the opportunity to add several nods to Kelce during the concert he attended, which she noted was her 87th show of the Eras Tour — a numerical match to Kelce’s jersey number. She also sported Chiefs's signature colors in a gold crop top and red skirt during the 1989 portion.

She's also added "So High School" — which fans have concluded is about her relationship with Kelce — to the setlist. Next, Swift will perform in Sweden this weekend.

During his offseason, Kelce has already inked a new contract with the Chiefs, hosted the new game show spinoff  Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?  and is joining the cast of  Ryan Murphy 's new FX series,  Grotesquerie .

Before their Italian getaway, Swift and Kelce attended Patrick Mahomes ’ 15 and Mahomies Foundation Golf Classic gala in Las Vegas on April 27. Earlier that week, they had dinner at Italian spot  Madeo Ristorante  in West Hollywood.

“She’s super sweet,” an insider said of their visit . “They were super nice. Very, very nice. She tipped really, really well.”
