Dublin City Hall

The former  Royal Exchange , now converted into the Dublin City Hall,  is an excellent example of Georgian architecture. Designed by Thomas Cooley, it was built between 1769 and 1779.

After the Act of Union, the former Royal Exchange building fell into disuse until it was purchased by the Dublin City Council in 1852.

The building was completely restored and used by the Dublin City Council until 1995. Now, council meetings take place at the City Hall.

The Rotunda , a large circular space covered by a dome and held up by 12 columns, is Dublin City Hall’s highlight. The hall is beautifully decorated with numerous statues, some of which were sculpted in 1772.

The building’s basement features a multimedia exhibit that traces the history of Dublin , from before the Anglo-Norman invasion in 1171 to the present day.

The exhibition includes items from different periods, archives and computers with interactive programs.

Is the Exhibition Worthwhile?

It's worth stepping inside the City Hall’s impressive Rotunda (entrance hall) to contemplate this stunning neo-classical building. However, we believe that the exhibition about the history of Dublin is too long and tedious.

Dublin City Hall

Dublin City Hall

Dublin City Hall was built between 1769 and 1779 (designed by Thomas Cooley). It is the headquarters of Dublin City Council and is the place where the Lord Mayor and City Councillors hold meetings to discuss present and future plans for Dublin.

City Hall was originally built as the Royal Exchange and was used by the merchants of Dublin as a financial centre until Dublin Corporation bought the building in 1851. It was renovated and re-opened in 1852. The building underwent a major refurbishment programme in 1998-2000 and has been restored to its former 18th century glory.

Situated in an historic quarter of Dublin, City Hall is neighbour to Christ Church Cathedral and Dublin Castle.

Noteworthy features of the building are the magnificent Hall and Rotunda (an elegant space with a circular dome, like a small-scale version of similar buildings in Rome); statues of Daniel O’Connell, Thomas Davis, Henry Grattan, Charles Lucas and Thomas Drummond; and a set of twelve paintings representing scenes from the history and mythology of the city. There is a detailed brochure available in the lobby explaining the various art works.

Twelve columns support the dome of the Rotunda, with a mural between each one. There are twelve murals in total, eight of which depict a famous legendary or historical scene, such as St Patrick baptising the King of Dublin. The remaining four show the Coat of Arms of the four provinces: Ulster, Leinster, Connacht and Munster. In the centre of the floor, directly under the dome, a mosaic depicting the Coat of Arms of Dublin is encircled by four statues. These four statues are of figures that played an important role in the development of Irish society.

The Rotunda is impressive, not only for its elegance and beauty, but for its rich and vibrant history. Admission to the entrance hall is free and it can also be hired for events such as civil wedding ceremonies, book launches and fashion shows.

Opening Hours: Open Mon to Sat: 10am – 4pm Closed Sun, Bank Holidays, St Patrick’s Day, Good Friday, 24 – 26 Dec & 1 Jan May be closed to the public when booked for private events and wedding ceremonies.

✨The City Hall in Dublin, known as the Royal Exchange in its early days, is an 18th-century building that now serves as the formal seat of Dublin City Council. It was designed by architect Thomas Cooley and built between 1769 and 1779. The City Hall is a notable example of 18th-century architecture in Dublin and was originally used by the city’s merchants.

✨City Hall is located on Dame Street, at the southern end of Parliament Street, on Dublin’s southern side. It is situated on a slope in front of part of Dublin Castle, which used to be the centre of the British government in Ireland until 1922.

✨Sean Connolly was a member of the Irish Citizen Army who, during the 1916 Easter Rising, used a key he had obtained from his job in the motor department to gain access to and seize control of the City Hall which was then used as a garrison.

✨Some council meetings are held in City Hall. The Dublin Corporation was renamed in the early 21st century as the Dublin City Council, previously the name of the assembly of councilors only.

✨Most City Council staff work in the newer, brutalist design, Civic Offices. It was controversially built in 1979 on the site of a national monument, the Viking city foundations on Wood Quay, a short distance away.

✨To learn about the rich history of Dublin City, be sure to visit the “Dublin City Hall, The Story of the Capital” exhibition located in the vaults of the city hall building. This exhibit provides a detailed and fascinating account of how Dublin has evolved over the years into the bustling metropolis it is today.

✨City Hall is open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 16.00 p.m., except for when weddings are being held.
