Worcester city art gallery and museum, virtual time travel trail.

Thursday 27 October, 5.30 – 8.30pm | Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum

The Virtual Time Travel Trail is intended to bring together the activities of the Worcester Life Stories project from the last 2 years. The evening will be a grand celebration of local memories and nostalgia using the historic city of Worcester as a large-scale canvas.

Worcester Life Stories was awarded National Lottery Heritage Funding in 2020 and the project team has commissioned a specialist supplier, London Guildhall School of Music and Drama , to deliver an outdoor and indoor projection-based event on 27 October 2022.

The trail comprises a number of sites around the city centre as the canvas for large-scale projections and will be supported by heritage attractions – including Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum – which are staying open for the evening.

A projection will take place in the activity space at the Museum.

Free entry; the wonderful independent café, Little Al’s at the Balcony, will be open during the evening.

Canaletto: A Venetian’s View   will be open during the evening; please note there is an admission charge for the exhibition, but this does not affect your free entry to the rest of the museum, café, toilets, and shop.

The Commandery is also part of the Virtual Time Travel Trail.

Projections are being created by the internationally-renowned Guildhall School of Music and Drama – it will be a spectacular free event and an opportunity to hear the stories of local people as never before.

What to see:

  • Henry Sandon Hall, Royal Porcelain Works – The Dr Ordered Clay  In 1951 the Worcester Porcelain Company commissioned John Stuart to make a documentary to bring to life their pioneering ceramic manufacturing process, starting with the mining of clay in Cornwall, right through to the decoration of the final product. This 20-minute film celebrates world-class ceramic heritage, where it was made, now the regenerated site of Royal Porcelain Works. It features ‘Princess Elizabeth on Tommy’, at her first trooping of the colour, on police horse Tommy. This was Royal Worcester’s first ever limited-edition model and has been selected as one of the Museum’s 25 Showstopper objects. The Dr of the title, refers to medic Dr John Wall, the founder of Worcester’s first porcelain manufactory. Thank you to Friends of the Museum of Royal Worcester who have sponsored this high-resolution digital remastering of the original production material.
  • The Commandery Museum, Sidbury Spectacular audio-visual projections by the internationally renowned Guildhall School of Music & Drama, bringing to life Worcester’s industrial heritage through historic photos and the stories of local people. Reflect, renew and re-charge – ready to step back into the 21st century.  The show lasts around 7 minutes and will be shown at: 6pm / 6:30pm / 7pm / 7:30pm / 8pm / 8:30pm. • Hope Church, St Martin’s Quarter Worcester Voices – a documentary by Worcester Mela (25 minutes). This is the story of the first Asian settlers that came to the City of Worcester. 12 Virtual Walking Trails Around the World That You Can Experience Right Now (Video)

Be whisked away to the mountains of Switzerland or the rugged Oregon coastline.

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

virtual time travel trail

In a matter of weeks, the terms shelter in place, self-isolation, and quarantine have become buzzwords, giving definition to many people’s new reality: staying home. Zoom happy hours have replaced post-work drinks and once-neglected home projects are finally getting finished.

But there are only so many Zoom calls to arrange and tasks around the house to complete. When your home begins to feel more like a cell and less like a refuge, it might be time to make an escape. And while you may not be able to hop in your car and head to the nearest state park, virtual walking routes can provide a mental escape from the norm. Plus, according to Psychology Today , “Studies suggest that viewing even an image of a tree or a forest canopy bolsters the parasympathetic division of the central nervous system that naturally induces calm.”

And in today’s world, an added sense of calm is essential.

These virtual walking routes and trails deliver new landscapes, fresh perspectives, and plenty of calm-inducing flora while transporting you all over the world. You can enjoy the view from your exercise bike or at-home treadmill, or cozy up on your couch and allow yourself to be whisked away to the mountains of Switzerland or the rugged Oregon coastline.

1. Moraine Lake in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada

If a visit to Banff National Park isn’t on your bucket list, it should be. But why wait for quarantine to lift before witnessing the bright blue waters of Moraine Lake? This glacially fed lake is situated in the Valley of the Ten Peaks in Banff National Park. It’s the sort of place you’ll never forget, and you can experience it virtually right now.

2. Indian Beach Trail, Oregon

This virtual hike takes you along the rugged Oregon coast on a perfectly sunny day, showing off stunning ocean views, rocky beaches, and plenty of lush, green forest. The popular trail travels through Ecola State Park, delivering jaw-dropping vistas every step of the way.

3. Pyramids of Giza, Egypt

This walking route takes you to another world — one of sandy terrain dotted with looming pyramids. This well-shot walking tour starts at the Mortuary Temple of Khafre, passing by the pyramids of Khafre, Khufu, and Menkaure, before ending at the iconic sphinx.

4. Havasu Falls, Arizona

You must have a reservation to enter the Havasupai tribal lands, where the stunning turquoise-green Havasu Falls can be found. Located in the Grand Canyon, this virtual tour winds between mesas, taking you through stunning red-rock desert as you near the powerful falls.

5. Tunnel of Love, Ukraine

If you’re looking for a hearty dose of green, head to Klevan, Ukraine, home of the lush Tunnel of Love. After spending three hours virtually walking on this abandoned train track that’s surrounded on all sides by bright green foliage and chirping birds, it’s near-impossible to feel anything but relaxed.

6. James Irvine Trail in Redwood National Park, California

It doesn’t get more relaxing than walking amongst the giant redwoods on a calm summer day. Paired with soothing music, this virtual walking route instills an immediate sense of peace the moment the camera starts rolling.

7. Village of Positano, Italy

If you’re up for experiencing a new culture — in addition to enjoying a virtual hike — this tour of Positano, a cliffside village on the Amalfi Coast in southern Italy, is hard to beat. You’ll pass through steep, narrow streets lined with boutiques and cafes as you head down toward the beaches and waters below.

8. Wailea Beach Path, Hawaii

With its year-round tropical climate and never-ending ribbon of beaches, Hawaii is a top destination for many Americans. But thanks to this virtual experience , you don’t have to fly across the ocean to get a feel for the islands. The tour takes you from the Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort to the Fairmont Kea Lani and along the Wailea Beach Path.

9. Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah

For a complete change of scenery, head to the red rocks of Utah, where you can virtually slink through narrow canyons and wind along high-desert paths. The view only gets more stunning when you enter into the trail’s wooded areas. Here, the red rock and dirt pop against the greens and browns.

10. Hoh Rain Forest in Olympic National Park, Washington

The moss-covered trees and neon green foliage seen along this trail are so vibrant that it feels like you’re walking on another planet. This special bit of nature is arguably just as stunning in this 4K-resolution virtual hiking experience as it is in real life.

11. Panorama Trail, Switzerland

This virtual walking trail starts at Männlichen, then takes you on a beautiful and easy downhill walk to Kleine Scheidegg, a mountain pass between the Eiger and Lauberhorn mountain peaks. Along the way, enjoy meeting (albeit virtually) some Swiss cows before descending amidst stunning mountain views.

12. Juan de Fuca Trail in British Columbia, Canada

Up north in British Columbia, you can virtually experience the beautiful Juan de Fuca Trail on Vancouver Island. Located within Juan de Fuca Provincial Park , this virtual walking route takes you deep into the forest and along the coastline, with occasional views of the Olympic Mountains.

Virtual Time Travel

Description.

Virtual time travel is increasingly becoming accessible to heritage organisations and museums as a way of presenting the past. Commodity hardware is now capable of presenting a high fidelity experience, and it is possible to design walk up and use exhibits that leverage now established digital literacies.

This  toolkit provides a framework to support the creation of virtual reality and virtual time travel exhibits.

This will make it easy to make digital content, such as digital reconstructions, 3D artefacts, spherical media and aerial photography into interactive virtual reality exhibits.

Virtual Hikes: The Best Way to Hike Without Leaving Home

Virtual Hikes, Virtual Hiking

Virtual hikes that you do from home are a great alternative when you can’t be on the trail. You’ll be able to “travel” and “hike” in a variety of destinations from the comfort of your living room.

Table of Contents

It may not be the same, but watching a virtual hike helps get over that feeling of missing out, especially if you are an avid hiker. Hikers, trekkers, and hardcore nature lovers will get my point. So get comfy, and use some of your spare time to travel through magical places without leaving home.

Virtual Hiking is the best way to get onto the trail from the comfort of your own home

The Benefits of Virtual Hikes

You may not have known this but there are some great benefits to virtual hiking. But, like all types of hiking, there is so much that you can come away with, besides an incredible view of course.

Virtual Hikes give you the opportunity to explore places that you have never been to before, from anywhere. A safe experience that can still give you goosebumps and take you to breathtaking destinations.

It encourages hikers and non-hikers to try out new trails. And the best part is trying out that new trail doesn’t have to cost you a thing. Virtual experiences can even help you plan your next adventure by making sure you are prepared for what a certain trail has to offer.

I know as a hiker I love to be prepared, especially on a longer trail or when you plan on taking a backpacking trip to your favorite trail.

If you are unable to get out on to a trail, because sometimes life can throw you curveballs, then virtual hiking is a great way to still get that boot on gravel feeling from wherever you are. I also consider this one of the best ways to take a moment and de-stress.

Virtual hikes are great ways to forget about everything, especially in trying times. You can enjoy some of the most spectacular hikes in the world with no crowds at your own pace and on your own time.

No pressure.

But the truly great thing about virtual hikes is that it is the perfect way to make workouts fun. You can use it not only to enhance your mental health but your physical health as well. Who says that you can’t prepare for a great hike at home?

Virtual hiking gives you the opportunity to not only enjoy the trail but train for it by walking the trail from anywhere. Whether its the Mountain Peaks, Bryce Canyon, Juan De Fuca Trail or the Olympic National Park you want to visit, virtual experiences can be your safe bet before actually going. So make sure to have your water bottle ready!

Play them while you are on the treadmill if you have one. You can also walk around the area that you have while watching a virtual hike or jog/walk in place. If you have any type of indoor trainer, whether a bike or even a rowing machine, you can use it while watching your virtual hike and enjoying a bit of nature.

You can even do your daily yoga or HIIT training while watching. The sky is the limit when it comes to the activities you can do while taking a virtual hike.

Personally I like playing them on my TV while walking around my dining room table. For elevations, I use a tension band around my ankles to try simulating a harder walk. So in times when going out on a hike is just not possible.

Why not enjoy a virtual hike and still reap the many benefits that hiking has to offer from anywhere. Enjoy dazzling views, blue waters,  and acres of forests while on your couch.

Here are 13 virtual hikes I really enjoyed:

Redwood national park, usa.

Home to some of the tallest trees on earth, Redwood National Park is located in California. It consists of several areas of protected forests, beaches and grasslands.

There are some exceptional hiking opportunities to be found in this beautiful park, which you can discover in the virtual hike.

Hiking in Virtual Time

May 25, 2020.

virtual time travel trail

By Tom Kloster

After the Eagle Creek Fire in September 2017, I know I was not alone in sorting through photos and trip reports from before the fire. While it has taken time for all of us to absorb the changes the fire brought to the Gorge, seeing old photos of our favorite places from years passed was a needed escape.

Flash forward to March 2020, and we suddenly find ourselves in the COVID- 19 crisis, largely confined to our homes and neighborhoods for weeks or months to come. Worse, having our treasured public lands closed for the duration adds exponentially to the stress of the moment in a way that any hiker can identify with. These are the places we go to escape the pressures of daily life, after all.

With this new reality upon us, it’s a good time to take a virtual tour of those favorite places that we long for! But this is where social media lets us down, as today’s trending trip reports on Facebook or Instagram are long gone tomorrow, and it’s nearly impossible to find old posts in the vast graveyard of yesterday’s posts.

A solution exists.  Did you know that every trip report on the Oregon Hikers Forum is easily available for you to virtually hike your favorite trail while we wait out COVID- 19? There are two ways to time-travel for your escape:

Method 1: Use Google . The search feature on the Oregon Hikers Forum isn’t nearly as powerful as Google, so the best way to browse the forum archive is to simple use these search terms: “Oregon Hikers Forum + Your Hike”.

Your hike might be “Eagle Creek” or “Cooper Spur” but you can also narrow the results by adding a year, as the archive goes back through 2010 and the older reports are fun to revisit.

Method 2: Use the Oregon Hikers Field Guide as your portal. Go to the OregonHikers.org site and select the “Field Guide” tab to begin your search, or you can  simply use a Google search: “Oregon Hikers Field Guide + Your Hike”. This combination almost always pulls up the OH Field Guide as the top result.

If you haven’t used the OH Field Guide before, your Google link will take you to a page like this:

Once you’re on the OH Field Guide page you’re looking for, scroll down to the bottom of the hike description, and you’ll find cross-linked trip reports for that hike:

These links appear in the field guide when folks have selected the hike as part of making a trip report over on the OH Forum (and that’s why its great if you can use this feature when making a trip report!). Some photos have vanished from trip reports where they were linked to commercial hosting accounts, but most users have uploaded their photos directly to the OH Forum, so for the most part everything is still there, ready for re-reading. It’s both fascinating to see the changes in some of our favorite spots over the years, and it’s always fun to see our amazing trails through someone else’s eyes. So for now, enjoy your virtual escape! We’ll all be back out on the trail soon enough. Hang in there, everyone!
