I don't use verizon but the rest of my family does. They don't pay anything extra and my parents are there for months at a time. I'd look into it a bit more.

We generally just use wifi and let people know if they need to get to us, communicate through Facebook. Never had a problem and no extra charges.

Iwant2 --- I'm sure this will help Verizon customers. We had Verizon for many years and I had some very bad customer service with them over many years (surprises on the bill and customer service personnel who didn't seem to get the pro-rated charges, etc ---- to the tune of paying well over $100 for a 2-weeks PV trip, about 2 years ago). And more. it got bad.

Coincidentally, when I called them to change to T-Mobile, they said (almost desperately) ---- "but, we just started a Mexico Plan too." Made me laugh. I told them I'd been a loyal customer for years and their time was up.

Obviously, you need to choose a plan that works for you in your home territory also, but we have had ZERO problems with T-Mobile from here in California to Mexico (other areas, in addition to Puerto Vallarta ) and the bill is the same every month.

I'm able to call friends in PV and they call me and I call my husband daily, when down there alone. Also able to call friends and businesses within Mexico when I/we are there.

Same charge every month. Not like Verizon was (two years ago, with a bill ranging from $65 to $100/month, not even knowing what it would be --- until I got the bill). Nice that they started a Mexico Plan ---- but they were late in doing that.

My bill (with endless service to/from/within Mexico) is $52/month. Same charge every month, for the past two years.

Hope you find a service that works for you. I'm very happy with my current service. No network issues to/from/in Mexico. For us, Verizon wore out their welcome, after many years.

Yes we had quite a surprise two weeks ago when we landed at PVR and got the Welcome text stating Travel pass is available and is $5/ day. That $2 rate did not seem to last too long and such a hefty increase had us back to using only 1 phone for data or only Wi-Fi. For our Boise area, coverage from other carriers has been bad, but it has been a few years since I checked.

One challenge, having decided to only use TravelPass as needed, was to figure out what exactly triggers the 24hr period. Verizon gives you a warning text travel pass is about to expire in 1 hour, but never tells you you have activated it! Below is a snip from a chat with Verizon when I returned stateside.

For the list of items that trigger the Travel Pass...

1. Wifi, does not. You are correct.

2. Data Enabled, Yes, it can. If Data Enabled is on, and Roaming is Enabled at the same time.

3. Roaming Enabled, Yes, it can. If you Make a call, Receive a call AND answer it. And usage of data, or an out going text. (Incoming texts DO NOT trigger Travel Pass.)

Okay. Either data or cellular activity as you described could trigger it but only if "Roaming" is enabled?

That is correct.

I am in PV now. I paid $25 for my plan. It's good for 30 days. Pricey. I also had to upgrade my phone because I was told my old iPhone 4s would not work here. Sigh....

Traveling Abroad? Here's How to Avoid Mobile Roaming Charges

M odern travel sees great benefits from the tech tools in our pockets. Anyone can download a few smartphone apps (many of them free) to reserve hotel rooms, navigate cities, translate signs through the camera, and, with the latest AI-driven apps, even translate conversations in real time. 

But those fancy phone features require a data connection, which typically costs extra through roaming charges when you're outside your home network. Here's how to avoid such charges.

First and foremost, you'll want to understand how pricey those extra charges are, or whether you'll be traveling to a region that's cheaper or free with your carrier. Some mobile carriers have partnered with carriers in other countries for more-affordable roaming or even free service, albeit with some restrictions. For instance, some plans, like T-Mobile's Essentials, have free service in Canada and Mexico, though only at slow "2G" and "3G"-like speeds, so don't expect to stream lots of video with that connection. 

But traveling to most countries will require you to pay mobile roaming charges if you try to use data services, make voice calls, or send text messages on your phone as normal. If that's your plan, check out our guide for the best travel phone plans. 

If you want to avoid mobile roaming charges, keep the following tips in mind.

Set up mobile service ahead of time

Some carriers will let you pick traveling service options ahead of time, which can include daily, weekly or monthly flat fees to get service from partner carriers in other countries. You can wait until you arrive at your destination and wait to be prompted to select your chosen service, but you can set it up ahead of time. Note that some carriers will simply default you to these services rather than charge you higher roaming fees, though it's worth confirming before you travel.

These international plans are pretty convenient, though some may come with caveats like being deprioritized behind other carrier customers, meaning you'll get lower speeds during peak traffic times. Check the fine print of each travel plan to know its restrictions and what you may need to pay for extra service.

Verizon's international plans start pretty simple, with $10 a day getting you 2GB per day of high-speed data and unlimited 3G-speeds data thereafter, as well as free voice calls and texting, in over 210 countries. That plan is discounted to $5 per day in Canada and Mexico. 

If you have one of the carrier's latest plans, known as Unlimited Plus and Unlimited Welcome, you'll get these features included for Canada and Mexico. Folks with Verizon's top Unlimited Ultimate option will get this international data for Canada and Mexico as well as for more than 210 countries. 

AT&T has a similar $10-per-day travel plan for unlimited data, voice calls and text. The data counts against your usual plan's allowance; going over will result in a charge and/or reduced download speeds of a super slow 2G-like connection. If you don't sign up for this plan, traditional roaming fees kick in, charging per text message, megabyte of data and minute of voice calling. 

Unlimited data for Canada and Mexico is included in AT&T's main Unlimited plans, while the carrier's Unlimited Premium PL and Unlimited Elite plans also allow unlimited data in 20 Latin American countries.

T-Mobile has its own international plans with unlimited calling, though they're pretty modest with data, starting at $5 per day for half a gigabyte of downloaded data. But keep in mind that the carrier's standard plans also include some international data allowances.

The basic Magenta and Go5G plans offer up to 10GB of high-speed data a month in Canada and Mexico, and once that's used up, get unlimited data at very slow 2G speeds (as previously mentioned, the cheapest Essentials plan only gets data in Canada and Mexico at 2G speeds). Go5G Next, Go5G Plus and Magenta Max plans have a small 5GB monthly travel allowance for high-speed data in over 215 countries, though that's subject to potential extra taxes and conditions. Standard Go5G plans get the same 5GB data allowance in 11 European countries.

Though it's possible to bump up your plan for the month (or more) you're traveling and return to your old plan thereafter, it's likely simpler to just pay for international data.  

Getting mobile service directly from a local carrier

Before carriers got friendlier with their international agreements to support each other's customers, one of the better traveling strategies was to get service straight from the carrier in the country you were traveling in. Once you landed, you'd just walk into a local carrier's retail store and get a prepaid SIM card to last you the length of your trip.

That's still possible today, though it's a bit more complicated. If you have one of the many phones that lack a physical SIM slot, including the latest iPhone 15 series and Samsung Galaxy S24 series, you'll have to register service through one of the eSIM accounts on your device. It's pretty easy to do, and is in fact one of the benefits of having multiple digital eSIM slots -- so you can have one for domestic use and one for traveling -- but it requires you to register through the carrier in question. You can even load the eSIM before you travel, through apps like Airalo and Ubigi .

Unfortunately, there's something else to consider: whether your phone is unlocked, that is, not tied to a carrier and restricted in using eSIMs from other carriers (even international ones). If you bought your device unlocked, you're in the clear. 

If you're paying off your phone in installments from your carrier, it's complicated. Verizon users have it best, as their installment plans unlock phones after 60 days. AT&T and T-Mobile, however, require you to finish your installments and fully pay off your phone to unlock it. Since AT&T's plans have a minimum of 36 monthly installments, customers may be out of luck getting a local carrier eSIM unless they're nearing the end of their contract -- in which case it may make sense to pay the balance for more travel freedom.  

Relying on a hotspot and tethering

Another method to avoid roaming is a bit more roundabout and requires you to sign up for service with a local carrier anyway, but you won't have to fiddle with eSIMs. When you land in your country of travel, you can rent a mobile hotspot (or register service on one you already own), which is a handheld device that turns cell signals into Wi-Fi. 

Note that you'll still need to pay for service either from the hotspot maker or from a local carrier, and there's no guarantee that their networks will play nicely with a given hotspot device. Check that it'll work in the area you're traveling to. 

Once you've got one set up, you just connect to the hotspot's Wi-Fi using your phone as normal. While it's a bit more cumbersome, this also lets you get internet for your other devices, like tablets and laptops, pretty much anywhere you get a phone signal from a local carrier.

Another caveat is that you'll need to keep the hotspot itself charged, which is another device battery you'll have to worry about. It might be worth carrying an external battery to make sure your hotspot can last a full day while you're out and about.

Ultimately, whatever option you choose should fit your travel habits and where you intend to go. Some carrier partnership options will be more appealing but offer slower speeds than getting service straight from the local carrier. But don't worry about getting locked into a choice: You can always try out one way when you arrive and switch to another if a better choice presents itself.

Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T are known as the three major players in the telecommunications industry. You might have already decided on which one you prefer when it comes to your phone service — but do you know which telecom company is the smartest investment in 2024?

Company Overviews

AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile are direct competitors in the U.S. telecommunications industry. Although they offer similar services, they present different investment opportunities. Here’s a quick overview of each company’s stock.

Verizon (VZ) provides technology, entertainment and information products through its subsidiaries. The company was incorporated in 1983 and currently operates through two segments: Verizon Consumer Group and Verizon Business Group.

Verizon is a popular mobile phone service provider and enjoys nationwide brand recognition. It generates more than $180,000 per employee in profits after tax. Verizon’s stock is relatively affordable and offers a good dividend yield compared to industry competitors. However, Verizon has also taken on significant long-term debt over the past decade, totaling more than $136 billion as of March 2024.

AT&T (T) is another well-known telecommunications company that operates in two segments: Communications and Latin America. The Communications segment provides technology and data services, while the Latin America sector focuses on prepaid and postpaid wireless services in Mexico, partially through the Unefon brand.

AT&T’s stock performance is historically steady. It currently offers a dividend yield of 6.48%, which is higher than the telecom industry’s standard of 4.65%. However, AT&T is not expected to undergo significant growth in the near future, meaning investors shouldn’t expect high capital growth.

T-Mobile (TMUS), which was founded in 1994, provides mobile communications services in the U.S., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Its services include voice and messaging data plans, prepaid and postpaid plans and wireless tech, like smartphones and tablets.

As a slightly smaller player in a highly saturated market, T-Mobile has fewer marketing resources than Verizon and AT&T and has resorted to non-traditional marketing tactics, such as attacking its competitors on social media. Thanks to its scrappiness, the company is currently in a period of rapid revenue growth, a benefit for investors looking for a high ROI.

Comparing Telecom Stocks

Here’s a look at how these three stock options stack up against one another, comparing a few key factors: stock price, dividends, debt and free cash flow.

Stock Price

Here’s a comparison of the 52-week price range for each stock as of late May 2024:

VZ:  $30.14 to $43.42

T: $13.43 to $18.16

TMUS: $124.92 to $168.71

The dividend yield is a measure of a company’s annual dividend payout in relation to its stock price. While this isn’t necessarily an indicator of a stock’s performance, it can tell you how much you’ll earn in annual dividends per share. Here are the current dividend yields for these three telecom companies:

VZ:  6.8%

TMUS: 1.54%

In terms of straight-up cash value, Verizon’s annual dividends are comparable to T-Mobile’s. However, remember that Verizon’s price per share is much lower — so you’ll get more bang for your buck with Verizon in terms of dividends alone.

As discussed above, Verizon has more long-term debt than the other two companies, at more than $136 billion as of March 2024. AT&T’s long-term debt for the same period was $125.7 billion, while T-Mobile’s debt is much lower at $77.8 billion.

High debt means a large portion of a company’s revenue will go toward repayment, which limits its free cash flow.

Free Cash Flow

Free cash flow is a measure of a company’s profits after it pays its operating expenses. It’s an important factor when you’re comparing stocks, because it shows how much cash a company has available for investing in growth opportunities, meeting its capital gains goals and generating returns for shareholders.

All three companies have made strides in their free cash flow in recent years. According to some reports, Verizon has displayed impressive financial resilience through the first half of 2024 and expects continued revenue growth through the rest of the year. AT&T has also outperformed expectations this year.

However, because of T-Mobile’s low debt and rapid growth, this stock still outperforms its competitors in terms of free cash flow.

Why T-Mobile Is the Best Investment

Out of the three options, T-Mobile likely offers the most promising long-term returns. This company has the most manageable debt compared to its competitors, meaning it has more flexibility to continue boosting its revenue and generating value for its shareholders. Many experts expect T-Mobile’s stock to perform better than its competitors in the long term.

That said, each of these stocks has its own advantages. Verizon offers a better dividend yield than T-Mobile, and AT&T is a reliable, low-cost option for risk-averse investors. These features might make them appealing options for certain investors — but when it comes to the big picture, T-Mobile is likely a better long-term investment.

Should You Invest in T-Mobile Stock Right Now?

If you want to invest in the telecom industry, T-Mobile may be a smart choice. However, just because it’s outperforming its competitors doesn’t mean it’s the best investment to add to your portfolio. Some of the top stocks of 2024 include Alphabet, Meta, Broadcom and UnitedHealth — T-Mobile doesn’t make the list.

On top of that, T-Mobile’s stock is currently pricey. New investors and those on a budget might want to wait until the price comes down before buying. There’s nothing wrong with investing in T-Mobile today if it’s right for you, but don’t feel pressured to run out and buy this stock right now.

T-Mobile offers to buy UScellular for $4.4 billion. What it means for Arizona

T-Mobile has agreed to acquire substantially all of the wireless operations of UScellular, including customers and stores in the latter company’s network, in a transaction valued at $4.4 billion.

The companies say the deal will expand T-Mobile’s 5G network to millions of UScelluar customers, especially those in underserved rural areas. However, the proposed transaction could have relatively little impact in Arizona and throughout the Rocky Mountain region, where UScellular has virtually no operations.

What is driving this acquisition?

T-Mobile and UScellular say the combination will result in superior connectivity for more cell-phone users, allowing UScellular customers to move “from a roaming experience outside of the UScellular coverage area to full nationwide access on the country’s largest and fastest 5G network," with 5G referring to the relatively new fifth generation of cellular technology that offers faster speeds and other benefits.

Also, more customers will be able to participate in T-Mobile’s subscription plans, customer support and connectivity. Collectively, UScellular customers could save “hundreds of millions of dollars,” T-Mobile said.

According to a statement by Laurent Therivel, CEO of UScellular, “The transaction provides our customers access to better coverage and speeds, as well as unlimited texting in more than 215 countries, content offers, device upgrades and other T-Mobile benefits.”

How might this work for UScellular customers?                                                                                           

Those customers will have the option to retain their current plans or move to a T-Mobile plan of their choosing with no switching costs. Potential benefits include streaming and free international data roaming. T-Mobile said its most popular plan, called Go5G Plus, allows for unlimited talking, texting and data access.

How do these companies compare in size?

T-Mobile is much larger and operates throughout most of Arizona and most of the U.S., along with substantial portions of Canada and Mexico. The company, with about 67,000 employees, earned a profit of $8.3 billion in 2023 on $48.7 billion in revenue, with roughly 120 million wireless customers. T-Mobile has headquarters in Bellevue, Washington, and Overland Park, Kansas.

Chicago-based UScellular, or United States Cellular Corp., counts about 4.6 million retail connections and around 4,300 employees. It earned $54 million last year on $3.9 billion in revenue. A map in the company's latest annual report shows operations in 21 states, but not in Arizona.

Will the transaction increase competition?

The companies say it will.

“This transaction will create a much-needed choice for wireless in areas with expensive and limited plans from AT&T and Verizon, and for those that have been limited to one or no options for home broadband connectivity,” the companies said. “T-Mobile will spur competition and expand its fast-growing home broadband offering and fixed wireless products to communities without competitive broadband options."

However, the deal also would further consolidate the industry. T-Mobile already has been active in doing that by integrating MetroPCS in 2013 and Sprint in 2020. T-Mobile cited those deals as “two of the most successful merger combinations in wireless history that resulted in competition-enhancing shifts benefiting millions of consumers."

T-Mobile said the proposed UScellular acquisition will force competitors to deliver “exceptional value and experiences” to more people. In addition to AT&T and Verizon, other rivals include DISH, Comcast, Charter Communications and Cox Communications.

What are the key terms of the deal and needed approvals?

T-Mobile will pay about $4.4 billion for the assets being acquired from UScellular, in a combination of cash and debt to be assumed. The transaction will need to secure certain regulatory approvals, including from the Federal Communications Commission. The companies expect the transaction to close by around the middle of 2025.

AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile are direct competitors in the U.S. telecommunications industry. Although they offer similar services, they present different investment opportunities. Here’s a quick overview of each company’s stock.

Verizon (VZ) provides technology, entertainment and information products through its subsidiaries. The company was incorporated in 1983 and currently operates through two segments: Verizon Consumer Group and Verizon Business Group.

Verizon is a popular mobile phone service provider and enjoys nationwide brand recognition. It generates more than $180,000 per employee in profits after tax. Verizon’s stock is relatively affordable and offers a good dividend yield compared to industry competitors. However, Verizon has also taken on significant long-term debt over the past decade, totaling more than $136 billion as of March 2024.

AT&T (T) is another well-known telecommunications company that operates in two segments: Communications and Latin America. The Communications segment provides technology and data services, while the Latin America sector focuses on prepaid and postpaid wireless services in Mexico, partially through the Unefon brand.

AT&T’s stock performance is historically steady. It currently offers a dividend yield of 6.48%, which is higher than the telecom industry’s standard of 4.65%. However, AT&T is not expected to undergo significant growth in the near future, meaning investors shouldn’t expect high capital growth.

T-Mobile (TMUS), which was founded in 1994, provides mobile communications services in the U.S., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Its services include voice and messaging data plans, prepaid and postpaid plans and wireless tech, like smartphones and tablets.

As a slightly smaller player in a highly saturated market, T-Mobile has fewer marketing resources than Verizon and AT&T and has resorted to non-traditional marketing tactics, such as attacking its competitors on social media. Thanks to its scrappiness, the company is currently in a period of rapid revenue growth, a benefit for investors looking for a high ROI.

Comparing Telecom Stocks

Here’s a look at how these three stock options stack up against one another, comparing a few key factors: stock price, dividends, debt and free cash flow.

Stock Price

Here’s a comparison of the 52-week price range for each stock as of late May 2024:

• VZ:  $30.14 to $43.42
• T: $13.43 to $18.16
• TMUS: $124.92 to $168.71

The dividend yield is a measure of a company’s annual dividend payout in relation to its stock price. While this isn’t necessarily an indicator of a stock’s performance, it can tell you how much you’ll earn in annual dividends per share. Here are the current dividend yields for these three telecom companies:

• TMUS: 1.54%

In terms of straight-up cash value, Verizon’s annual dividends are comparable to T-Mobile’s. However, remember that Verizon’s price per share is much lower — so you’ll get more bang for your buck with Verizon in terms of dividends alone.

As discussed above, Verizon has more long-term debt than the other two companies, at more than $136 billion as of March 2024. AT&T’s long-term debt for the same period was $125.7 billion, while T-Mobile’s debt is much lower at $77.8 billion.

High debt means a large portion of a company’s revenue will go toward repayment, which limits its free cash flow.

Free Cash Flow

Free cash flow is a measure of a company’s profits after it pays its operating expenses. It’s an important factor when you’re comparing stocks, because it shows how much cash a company has available for investing in growth opportunities, meeting its capital gains goals and generating returns for shareholders.

All three companies have made strides in their free cash flow in recent years. According to some reports, Verizon has displayed impressive financial resilience through the first half of 2024 and expects continued revenue growth through the rest of the year. AT&T has also outperformed expectations this year.

However, because of T-Mobile’s low debt and rapid growth, this stock still outperforms its competitors in terms of free cash flow.

Why T-Mobile Is the Best Investment

Out of the three options, T-Mobile likely offers the most promising long-term returns. This company has the most manageable debt compared to its competitors, meaning it has more flexibility to continue boosting its revenue and generating value for its shareholders. Many experts expect T-Mobile’s stock to perform better than its competitors in the long term.

That said, each of these stocks has its own advantages. Verizon offers a better dividend yield than T-Mobile, and AT&T is a reliable, low-cost option for risk-averse investors. These features might make them appealing options for certain investors — but when it comes to the big picture, T-Mobile is likely a better long-term investment.

Should You Invest in T-Mobile Stock Right Now?

If you want to invest in the telecom industry, T-Mobile may be a smart choice. However, just because it’s outperforming its competitors doesn’t mean it’s the best investment to add to your portfolio. Some of the top stocks of 2024 include Alphabet, Meta, Broadcom and UnitedHealth — T-Mobile doesn’t make the list.

On top of that, T-Mobile’s stock is currently pricey. New investors and those on a budget might want to wait until the price comes down before buying. There’s nothing wrong with investing in T-Mobile today if it’s right for you, but don’t feel pressured to run out and buy this stock right now.
