Although 1992 brought more than enough repetitive post-hardcore records from brand-name indie labels Amphetamine Reptile and Touch and Go, Sub Pop still saw fit to sponsor this Providence-based cabal of smart boys in space suits. Emulating an amped-up and emotionally overwrought Joy Division on the four-track debut, the laddies — founders John MacLean (guitar) and Jeremiah Ryan (vocals), with drummer Richard Pelletier and a few other members coming and going — have obviously had access to a complete catalogue of Gang of Four and Mission of Burma records.
But that was only an introduction. A year later, the adjusted quintet took a giant step up the creative ladder with The Pigeon Is the Most Popular Bird , released on CD and on vinyl (as two 12-inch EPs). Even when the album prods at previously poked topsoil, it pecks with complexity and enthusiasm. The group’s cold bravado advances an acidic and adrenaline-fueled guitar ethos in songs that arrive nestled between odd, untitled instrumentals. It takes plenty of plays to find all the hooked nettles Six Finger Satellite has hidden in whirly energy flashes like “Laughing Larry” and “Neuro-Harmonic Conspiracy.” The band reeks of psychosis and superiority, but the terse presentation is impeccable. (Kurt Niemand, the album’s bassist, died in ’95, reportedly of an overdose.)
After collapsing behind a swirl of drug rumors, the band re-entered orbit with Machine Cuisine , a conceptual mini-album of eight songs on 10-inch vinyl. Temporarily restaffed as a scientific guitar-free trio, 6FS plays heartless Germanic proto-techno with amoral undertones. The pulsing flow is about as warm as Ian Curtis’ ashtray, but the construction is genuinely clever and dryly hilarious. Robotic vocals revisit Devo’s neurotic erotica, stoking the fires of computer desire on the opening “Love (via Machine)”; catchy electro-pops like “The Magic Bus” (an original) and “The Greek Arts” modulate G-funk style synth over tight Kraftwerk rhythms and intentionally trite lyrics. (The mail-order Machine Cuisine Companion cassette footnotes the platter with MX-80 Sound-inspired jams, a Suicide cover and much more Moog madness.)
Severe Exposure integrates the designs of the all-synth outing with the previous brash scissor rock, flashing a guitar band confident enough to delve heavily into disco beats and dramatic vocals. With the mood so established, plenty of panicky songs about animals, gaming and translocation are gathered in the album’s full-bodied silvery mercurial radiance. “Rabies (Baby’s Got The)” and “Simian Fever” are animal aggressive and messy, while sharing the synthetic digitone lusts of new wave.

Legend has it that 6FS had bamboozled Sub Pop into signing them, via a four-song demo that grossly misrepresented the band’s intended sound. Maybe that’s what happened or maybe the band’s style just evolved in unexpected directions, but the demo, released as the EP Weapon in the spring of ’92, is certainly an outlier in the 6FS catalog. The beefy, Melvins-influenced thrash and straight-ahead guitar churn were long gone by the time 6FS released its proper debut, The Pigeon Is the Most Popular Bird, in June of the following year. To its everlasting credit, Sub Pop didn’t seem to mind.
The Pigeon Is the Most Popular Bird could be viewed as two albums: half mostly-instrumentals (all untitled, almost all under two minutes, except for the epic last track) that shove elements of noise, surf, kosmiche and postpunk in a malfunctioning blender; half discordant, heavily syncopated punk-skronk in the vein of Amphetamine Reptile bands like Tar and Hammerhead. It’s hard to say whether either approach would be entirely successful on its own, but presenting the jams and songs in alternating order makes for an arresting melange of aggressive tension, shardlike rhythms and more spacious, left-field grooves, a mix that still sounds fruitfully strange three decades later.
The more traditional songs lean heavily on the template of The Jesus Lizard, with vocalist Jeremiah Ryan laying down mutilated rants over the serrated, scabrous guitars of John MacLean and Peter Phillips and the zero-bullshit, 100% toxic rhythm section of bassist Kurt Niemand and drummer Richard D. Pelletier. While most of these numbers sound like capable, often invigorating products of the early ‘90s noise scene that genuflected at the altar of Big Black, a few stick out: “Funny Like a Clown” (an extremely 1990s title, it must be pointed out) has a slide into cracked falsetto from Ryan — or possibly Phillips — and appears to briefly quote Mudhoney’s grunge classic “Sweet Young Thing Ain’t Sweet No More”; “Hi-Lo Jerk” has a demented swagger, abetted by a harmonica (!) and ironically hirsute guitars that hint at a Chrome infatuation that would be expanded upon in the near future.
And there are other signs of weird ambition. Two songs detail the unsavory adventures of a character named Larry (who might be related to tragically pervy video game legend Leisure Suit Larry), while “Solitary Hiro” references the work of cyberpunk authors Neal Stephenson and William Gibson. These elements foreshadow where the band was headed: a science-fiction-informed approach that grafted a queasy sexuality to a coldly futurist, conceptual cyber-grind, a No Wave for the internet era, post-millennium tension at a time when people were still dancing on the grave of the ‘80s. To say that it was a few years ahead of its time is an almost comical understatement.
By the time the next album arrived, Phillips was out, leaving only MacLean on guitar, bassist Dixon had left, replaced by James Apt who also played clarinet, and vocalist Ryan was hitting the Moog pretty hard. More importantly, the band had figured out how to reconcile its Man or Astro-man?-style grooves and textures with its jagged, confrontational rock leanings instead of splitting them into separate songs. Much of the big-guitar bombast was lost in the process, but Pigeon isn’t a relic from a long-gone, fondly remembered time or the document of a road not taken – it’s a snapshot of a band fully exploring and mastering one kind of sound and figuring out how they were gonna melt that template down into a nutrient-rich slurry for the future to feed on. It’s a reminder that the 1990s were somehow both exactly how you remember them (whether you were there or not) but also far more peculiar, full of mutants, hybrids, heretics and prescient iconoclasts. While Six Finger Satellite was too provocative and uncompromising to ever rise above cult status or make Sub Pop a lot of money, the group’s final album, Law of Ruins , released in 1998, was produced by a talented young soundman the band had recently hooked up with. That young engineer’s name? James Murphy. And now, as they, say, you know the rest of the story.
