Regarded as one of the seminal rock bands of the 1970s, Uriah Heep is a hard rock band from London, England.

Formed originally in 1967 by guitarist Mick Box with David Garrick, as Spice. Having answer a music paper ad, Garrick and Box were joined by drummer Alex Napier and bassist Paul Newton. The band gigged, eventually making their way to the marquee level and gained the attention of Hit Record Productions Ltd.'s boss Gerry Bron who helped them get signed to Vertigo Records. The band changed their name to Uriah Heep and started to record their debut album, and three quarters into the recording of the album Alex Napier was replaced by Nigel Olsson (who in turn was replaced by Keith Baker). Despite the minor change, they released their debut album “…Very ‘Eavy…Very ‘Umble” in 1970.

Two albums later the band went through another lineup change resulting in a newfound chemistry. Using this, they released “Demons and Wizards” which was released in 1972 and peaking at number 20 in the United Kingdom and 23 in the United States. A year later Uriah Heep recorded and released a live double album during their performance at the Birmingham Town Hall. Meanwhile, Ken Hensley had gradually recording his own, mellower material; releasing his solo debut Proud Words on a Dusty Shelf the same year.

Unfortunately due to heavy alcohol use, the band became inconsistent with their performances for the rest of the 70s; in fact, it wasn’t until the release of “Fallen Angel” in 1978 that the band recorded an album with a consistent lineup. However, this was short lived when yet another member quit the band. They finally hit their stride with a constant lineup from 1987 until 2007, resulting in successful touring with some of their shows becoming recorded and released as live albums. Additionally, their release of their 1995 album, “Sea Of Light” was well received and was followed three years later by the release of “Sonic Origami” which allowed them to successfully tour Europe. The band released their 23rd album, “Into The Wild” on 15 April 2011 and again went back into the studio in early 2014, releasing “Outsider” later that same year.

Live reviews

What can one say about Uriah Heap, live or otherwise? They are one of the seminal defining rock bands from the 60's and 70's. Do they rock just as much in person as they do on the radio and albums? Absolutely they do.

You do not go as far as Uriah Heap has on a lack of talent. Their shows are classic rock shows. Smoke rises from the stage, the drummer is on a pedestal, and the singer is up front and center belting out tunes expertly with a distinctly seventies and eighties voice.

Their shows in the eighties were full of power, driving performances, and lively crowds. It was hard to be in a Uriah Heap audience and not get excited. They showed their audience both their talent and their love, both for music and for their fans. People shouted and whistled whenever a lull in a song came out. People swayed back and forth with their hands in the air during slow, swaying sections of anthems.

This was rock then and they still put on a spectacular show even to dwindling fans. The fans that still remain in their shows are passionate, loud, and love them like no other fans in the world.

The large permed haircuts may be a distant memory now yet the hard rock running through the veins of the members of Uriah Heep remains ever-present. The London band is highly revered in the modern world of rock so therefore you have an interesting mixture of fans. There are those who were around to see the group in their heyday whilst you have newer converts who may have been taught about the brilliance of Uriah Heep at a later date.

There is definitely a mutual adoration for the music running through the venue as the five current musicians step out and greet the masses. They quickly take up their instruments as the stage lights swirl around and get to work recreating the classics including 'The Hanging Tree' and 'July Morning'. After playing on stage over a thousand times, you cannot fault their musicianship and fan favourite 'Lady In Black' has been extended to showcase the blistering instrumentals. They return to massive cheers for 'Gypsy' which closes the show in suitable style.

Well I flew from New Zealand to see the two later shows in Tokyo. From the moments the lights dimmed the stage was filled with a group that could have been doing their first shows in months with the amount of pent-up energy that was unleashed! The 70s era songs could have been new releases from the enthusiasm that they were played with and the songs off the new album deserve to go into the collection of classics. The enthusiasm of the audience of all ages was relentless and only dimmed when the group left the stage! Oh and I should mention that I am 69 years young!! This is a group that don't have the words " bad show "" in their vocabulary and are rocking into their half century. Go see them people you won't be disappointed . I can't wait to see them again. Rock on. Peter

Saw show 3/1/18 at the Kent Theater, Kent, Ohio. I must say that the review listed earlier on this site by alan-dvorkis was spot on. Musically a great show. However, lead singer Bernie Shaw's constant efforts to get the crowd to clap and/or stand up were very annoying. The bassist walked in gesturing to the crowd to stand up for them. Memo to UH: I paid for YOU to entertain ME, not vice versa. And I paid for a SEAT to sit in. I'll stand up for the encore. That's how it works. It seemed like they wanted to be "adored", for a lack of a better word. Guys, get over yourselves. Let the music stand for itself, which it did well.

Wow!We waited a very long time to see Uriah Heep, and it was definitely worth the wait!!! I bought the tickets for an anniversary gift to surprise my husband. This is his FAV band. I splurged and bought him the VIP package with a meet and greet. Not only did we rock every minute from the time they started playing, till the band finished the final song, but we got to go upstairs and meet them all, get photos, hugs, and some awesome conversation. I would rate this performance 12 out if 10!!! One of the best, and most fun ever! Great audience participation, great energy, great band!!! Highly recommended!!!

The concert in Schaffhausen (25th of March, 2016) was excellent. The new drummer, Russell Gilbrook, gave the band fresh new vital energy which seems to woken up older member of the group. For example, I have seen Uriah Heep many times in nineties and 2K still with Lee Kerslake on the drums, but I have never seen Mick Box that much active playing different soli as on this evening! Bernie Shaw, a born stageman, was also in full form. It was great pleasure to see such a strong Uriah Heep!

Uriah F-ing Heep!!! Yeah, Baby!!! High energy, great Prog Rock, and a night to remember! Fun, Fun, Fun! My husband was singing and rocking and even fist pumping...I have Never seen him have so much fun at a show, and we have been to hundreds of live acts. After the show we got to meet the band, and what a wonderful, friendly bunch of guys they are. Would recommend this band to any fan of the early 70's Prog and rock bands. We can't wait to see them again...Rock On People!

What can i say. It's been more than 45yrs since last seeing Uriah Heep live. The only original member, Mick Box, and the present day members can bring it just like the original.

Every part of the band, guitar, keyboard, bass and drums make up the sound I've enjoyed so much.

The venue, The Kent Stage, is not a big venue and that made the whole experience that much more enjoyable.

It was EXCELLENT!

There was NOT a singe "old" man on the stage, they rocked like high-energy rockers should rock.

Every song plylist was excellent, both their great oldies and their new stuff!

My only wish is that they would've played for another couple hours :)

I will ABSOLUTELY see them again when they come back to St Louis!

A++ concert
