Sinbad Makes Triumphant Return to Comedy Stage for ‘Netflix is a Joke’ Fest

by BOTWC Staff

May 17, 2024

Ladies and gentlemen, the one and only SINBAD!

Legendary comedian Sinbad made his long-awaited return to the stage for the “Netflix is a Joke” fest . Billed as the “biggest comedy festival in North America,” the Netflix fest is a partnership between the streaming giant and Live Nation that ran from May 2nd to 12th. Featuring more than 400 live stand-up shows with some of the best burgeoning and veteran comedians in the world; the festival descended on Los Angeles for 12 days of laughter in the city’s most historic venues.

Four years ago, the beloved comedian suffered a stroke as a result of a blood clot that traveled from his heart to his brain, the Los Angeles Times reports. Earlier this year, he returned to social media to thank fans for all of the love, prayer, and support while announcing that he’d soon be returning to the spotlight.

“Expect to see more of me soon…You can’t believe it? You better believe it. Miracles happen,” Sinbad said in his video.

His family backed him up in a statement, saying the comedian had vowed not to stop fighting until he returned to the stage.

This year, he began making appearances again, joining his fellow cast members from “A Different World” on their HBCU Tour via Zoom to address students from Clark Atlanta, Spelman, and Morehouse at the Atlanta University Center (AUC).

“It’s wild that the kids even know who I am. That’s beautiful,” he later said in a social post.

Now the “Jingle All The Way” star has finally hit the stage again, joining attendees of Netflix is a Joke to close out the festival. Assisted by a walking staff and family members, he arrived on stage to thunderous applause as the host announced the icon’s arrival. Seated, Sinbad called his return a miracle.

“I’m gonna tell you something – it is a miracle for me to come out tonight, even to be walking with that staff. I feel good that I can do that because the left side of my body was affected. My left hand, my left leg, just quit,” he told the audience.

He went on to encourage attendees to watch their words and the material they used in their jokes. He reflected on some of his earlier stand-up routines while also cracking a few jokes in tribute to his wife, who has stuck by his side.

“Be careful what you talk about. Remember I did my joke about having a stroke? You gotta be careful what you talk about because you’ll bring it to fruition. Thank God I did have the woman I talked about, the strong woman who loved me…This is your marriage vows, better or worse, in good health, bad health, rich or poor…Because I know with some of the dumb stuff I did during my marriage, I know some days when I’m in this wheelchair at the top of the steps, I know you’re up there thinking, ‘I know what you did,’” he joked.

As the audience burst into laughter, one thing was clear: Sinbad’s still got it and will always be one of the greatest comedians to ever do it. Here’s wishing the legend a full recovery. We can’t wait to see him at the next show.

Sinbad is thanking “fans and friends” for their enduring support following his first major appearance in more than three years.

Black Rom-com couples

The beloved comedian, now 67, suffered a stroke in November 2020 — and with the exception of a still image shared to his Instagram in 2022, had not been seen in public until last month.

“Thank you to everybody who’s been praying for me, and saying good things, and supporting me during this time in my life,” he begins. “It means a lot to me. God has been with us and he has carried me. He has carried me through my whole life, and it means so much when I hear from you all and you tell me, Sinbad, keep going… Sinbad, we’re sending prayers… Those words are important and I feel it. I feel those prayers.

“I want to say this to all of the people who have emailed me through [my] website: Some of you are going through what I’m going through, or even worse than me,” he continues. “I’m reading these things, I’m trying to answer as many as I can. I pray for you and I understand how it’s like. It’s rough. I want to thank all of you who have been fans and friends all these years of mine.

He even goes on to suggest that he’ll be getting back to work. “Expect to see more of me soon,” he says. “And don’t freak out if you turn around and I’m standing right behind you. ‘Sinbad, I can’t believe you’re here.’ You can’t believe it? You better believe it! Miracles happen.”

In addition to his role as Coach Walter Oakes on the aforementioned sitcom A Different World (1987-91), Sinbad served as host of It’s Showtime at the Apollo (1989-91) and headlined the Fox comedy The Sinbad Show (1993-94). More recently, he returned to Fox and played Lil Rel Howery’s dad in the short-lived series Rel (2018-19).

On the big screen, he appeared in films That’s Adequate  (1989), Coneheads  (1993), Houseguest  (1995), Jingle All the Way  (1996), Crazy as Hell  (2002) and  Planes  (2013).

Love You Sinbad God be with You and keep you God is able He will bring you through He didn’t bring You this far to leave You God Bless

I’m glad he’s bouncing back. Strokes are scary! Even a TIA (mini stroke) can have you freaking out when it happens to a family member. O.o

Sinbad you have greatness in your future.Old Cherokee Indian folklore says in every tribe a Chief is relegated to sit by the campfire with the old haggard toothless squalls and care for the babies and young children and gather sticks and firewood to stay warm making beads and blankets while the young strong Braves of the tribe are out hunting buffalo and deer.Well ain’t your time Sinbad! Get well get back on stage . God bless you from your fans in Tennessee.

Yes sir Miracles do happen and I pray GOD continues to bless you and send miracles your way. My husband is going thru the same things you are going thru and he also is getting better thanks to GOD’S grace and mercy

We love you man! Anytime you can bless us with your presence it’s awesome. Stay blessed! You and your family are in our hearts and prayers. Later Family!

Should be mentioned that he did a voice cameo in Good Burger 2

Sinbad, Brother…. You touched upon alot of young lives out here on this rock we trapped on. Honestly, I wouldn’t have wanted to be born on a rock that didn’t have Mr. Sinbad. ❤️

Sinbad, All my prayers go out to you big fan since your start in the 80’s.understand. I understand what you are going through, I suffered a stroke at the age of 52 on December 13 2020. I am in a wheelchair with my left side paralyzed. I am still fighting and praying to someday be able to walk and maybe even have the use of my left side.I agree when you say that we are luckier than most. I was able to have myfamily behind me to help. My younger sister (one year younger) moved in with me to get me throughmy therapy and all the other issues that popped up due to the stroke.Well Sinbad we will continue to keep moving forward My Prayers to you and your family. Sincerely Marco A Cisneros.through my

So glad to know you’re doing well. TO GOD BE THE GLORY, yes miracles do happen.

Sinbad was, and still is, the funniest comedian I’ve ever watched. His repour with the audience is really entertaining. I could watch him forever. I hope his health continues to improve. As much as I would love to see him on stage again, if it affects his health, I’m happy to watch reruns. As long as he gets well!!

hello Sinbad my brother had a stroke also, I pray every day for his recovery. God is with u s are all praying for your recovery. People who never had a stroke. can never feel what we are going through. With a good support team and family. We can ask the Lord for his daily healing of our pain. I tell people the Lord has prepared my journey from my mother’s womb to my tomb. He knew we could handle this part of our life. before my stroke I never really knew who I was. I was always disabled, and now I get to see the true me. It may sound weird, but we all wear different faces. through life. But now I know who I really am A Child of God no matter what I look like. Get well.

We miss you!! I Love You!!! Stay Well My Friend!!

Make it back, make it back. You can do it.

Prayers to you, love you so. Just a funny guy who tells it like it is. God speed to you

So glad she’s gone. We miss the Walter Cronkite days when all they did was “report” the news and not give their own personal take on it. Not saying what they believe is unfounded or unjustified. We just don’t want to hear it. Let us decipher the news for ourselves. Most of us can get an informed opinion on what it all means. We don’t need help because then it’s not “our” opinion, it’s “our” opinion painted into our acceptance by someone else’s take on it. She wasn’t the only one doing that. I just remember she was the first one I heard doing it. The only person I would watch, “if” I watched the news at all, was Lester Holt.

Sinbad, the man! You have been such a presence in the comedy world. My kids grew up watching you in Jingle all the way! Your time on camera were some of the best parts of that movie! “You too Barnabie Jones”! Love and praying for you.

Sinbad Makes First Public Appearance 3 Years After Suffering Stroke

Comedian sinbad, who suffered a stroke in 2020, joined his a different world costars for the sitcom’s hbcu college tour event at morehouse college on feb. 29..

Sinbad is ready to take the stage again.

The comedian, who has been out of the spotlight since suffering a stroke in 2020, made his first public appearance in three years during a virtual A Different World reunion Feb. 29 for the show's HBCU College Tour event at Morehouse College in Atlanta.

"Thank you for your prayers, support, and positive thoughts," Sinbad wrote in a March 4 Instagram video , recapping the event. "They've carried me this far and will see me through to the finish line. It really is a different world out here!"

And the 67-year-old was touched by the reaction of college students in the crowd during his most recent appearance.

"Man, that was so cool," he added in the video. "It's wild that the kids even know who I am—that's beautiful. Thank you to everybody who's been praying for me and saying good things and supporting me during this time in my life. It means a lot to me."

Sinbad (real name David Adkins ) gained a loyal fanbase starring as Coach Walter Oakes in A Different World in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s—alongside other stars like Jasmine Guy   and Jada Pinkett Smith . The stand-up comedian later fronted his eponymous sitcom, which ran for one season in the mid-‘90s and starred alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1996 film Jingle All The Way .

And while he continued to take acting and voice roles throughout the 2000s and 2010s, he's ultimately focused on recuperation in the last few years—other than playing himself in an episode of Atlanta and voicing a business manager in Good Burger 2 (2023). Still, throughout his recovery, he's maintained a focus on his fans.

"It means so much when I hear from y'all, and you tell me ‘Sinbad keep going,' ‘Sinbad, we're sending prayers," he added. "Those words are important and I feel it—I'm reading these things, I'm gonna try to answer as many as I can."

And he promises this is only the beginning of his return to the spotlight.

"Expect to see more of me soon," he concluded on Instagram. "Don't freak out if you turn around and I'm standing right behind you. ‘Sinbad I can't believe you're here,' You can't believe it? You better believe it. Miracles happen."

Sinbad  is back on the comedy stage after returning to the public eye for  the first time in over three years .

ET learned that the 67-year-old comedian took the stage at the Netflix is a Joke Presents: Sinbad Tribute Show at the YouTube Theater in L.A. after 10 p.m. on Monday.

Sinbad spoke onstage beside his family to close out the night with a short set that ET has learned was sharp.

Hosted by Doug E. Fresh, the tribute show at the YouTube Theater benefited the Sinbad Special Needs Trust. Monday night's special, part of the streamer's Netflix is a Joke fest, featured comedic performances from Deon Cole, D.L. Hughley, Byron Allen, Mark Curry and DJ Trauma.

Monday's show comes nearly three months after Sinbad made a virtual appearance at the  A Different World  HBCU College Tour event, which saw the cast of the famed sitcom,  A Different World,  reunite to raise money for HBCU scholarships and promote college enrollment.

On Feb. 29, the comedian appeared on a large screen in the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, and spoke to those in attendance via video conference call. The introduction of the celebrated comic was met with a resounding cheer from the audience of mostly college students, who excitedly applauded the star as he made his first appearance since  suffering a major stroke back in 2020 .

The comedian -- who appeared in 77 episodes of  A Different World  as Coach Walter Oakes between 1987 and 1991 --  took to Instagram after his appearance  to share his appreciation for the support from the students in attendance.

"Man, that was so cool.  A Different World  going to Atlanta, going to Morehouse College and on campuses and getting a chance to be on Zoom and say something to the kids," Sinbad marveled in an emotional video message. "It's wild that the kids even know who I am. That's beautiful."

"Thank you to everybody's who's been praying for me and saying good things and supporting me during this time in my life. It means a lot to me," he shared. "It means so much when I hear from y'all."

The comedian promised that fans should "expect to see more of me soon," and explained that he's getting better, stressing, "Miracles happen."

"Thank you for your prayers, support, and positive thoughts. They've carried me this far and will see me through to the finish line," Sinbad captioned the heartfelt post. "It really is a different world out here!"

Sinbad's  stroke occurred in October 2020 . At the time, his family released a statement saying they were "faithful and optimistic that he will bring laughter into our hearts soon."

Then, in November 2022,  ET got an update from one of Sinbad's close friends from college, Phyllis Johnson , where she detailed the comedian's condition and recovery efforts.

"He's in the process of rehabbing from the stroke and learning to enunciate words and get his mobility back, at this time," Johnson shared at the time. She went on to explain that while Sinbad's current condition is not dire, it is incredibly debilitating, stating, "Just learning to walk and talk, and do all the things he could do for himself that he needs assistance with now."

Sinbad is best known for his television work on such classics as  A Different World  and  The Sinbad Show . His latest projects were his work on the television series  Rel  and appearing in an episode of  Atlanta.

Like his idol Bill Cosby, Sinbad never curses on stage. "I want people to bring the whole family to my show." It might surprise some people to realize that he keeps a show clean. Big and bulky, favoring broad comedy, he stalks up and down the stage like a security guard at a cheap sneaker store. He might be the kind of gentle giant who'd say, "ok, just pay for what you stole and you walk out no harm done," but he's still a dangerous looking dude. It's prevented him from truly achieving comic stardom.

Born in Benton Harbor, Michigan, he had three brothers and two sisters. To get attention, he'd perform all kinds of wacky stunts. He also developed a sharp wit. That's why he used the name Sinbad on stage: "I renamed myself Sinbad because Sinbad is bad. He could hang with rogues and with kings. He didn't have the strength of Hercules, but he could outwit anyone."

An unusual looking figure in his teens, young David Adkins attended the University of Denver on a basketball scholarship and was named "Red Chamberlain" for his amazing height and even more unusual red hair. He switched from sports to comedy in 1983 when he began touring. "I prayed, Please Lord, this is hard work. So if I'm not funny let me know right away."

Sinbad's first break came when he was a finalist on "Star Search." He played Redd Foxx's son on "The New Redd Foxx Show " and got a valuable acting tip from the star. Between takes Redd told his red-headed "son" on the show: "If you don't do this right," we'll get a white boy to play the part."

After the Foxx show folded, Bill Cosby hired Sinbad for "A Different World." Sinbad continued his stand-up work, hosting "It's Showtime at the Apollo," and earning his own one-hour HBO special, "Brain Damaged." Tha year, 1991, he also co-starred on the "Share the Dream Tour" of black colleges. The tour was sponsored by Coca-Cola, and other companies found Sinbad a key comedian to back. Reebok hired him for their line of Blacktop basketball shoes and he also shilled for Polaroid Captiva and One-Step Cameras. He returned to HBO for a 1993 special, "Afros and Bellbottoms." By 1996 he had a deal with HBO for a series of comedy specials as both comedian and producer.

Distinctive looking, family oriented, and coming up with bold, broad strokes of black comedy, Sinbad was one of the hottest comics who never told a joke. "I don't know any," he admits, building laughs ala Cosby, via anecdotes and observations.

The late 90's saw Hollywood beckon, but film audiences didn't quite know what to make of this larger-than-life high-energy animated giant. He starred in "Houseguest" and battled the formidable Arnold Schwarzenneger in "Jingle All the Way," but the films didn't exactly thrill critics or turn Sinbad into a money-in-the-bank box office name. He was tapped as the host of his own talk show, but this too was a disappointment.

He continues to tour, to appear in film projects, and to devote himself to a various charities including The Sickle Cell Research Foundation, The Children's Defense Fund, Omega Boys Club and The Magic Johnson Foundation. He starred in a one-man show for Morehouse College, with the profits going to the Endowed Scholarship Fund in the names of his parents, the Reverend Dr. Donald and Louise Adkins.

Sinbad Makes First Appearance Since 2020 Stroke For 'A Different World' HBCU Reunion Tour: 'I Feel Those Prayers'

Sinbad made his first public appearance since having a stroke in 2020.

According to People , the comedian joined the cast of A Different World via Zoom for the first stop on their tour of historically Black colleges and universities on Feb. 29. Following the appearance, he shared an Instagram reel thanking fans for their love and support.

“Thank you for your prayers, support, and positive thoughts. They’ve carried me this far and will see me through to the finish line. It really is a different world out here!” he wrote in the reel’s caption.

In the clip, Sinbad is shown reacting to his virtual appearance on the tour’s stop at the Atlanta University Center in Atlanta.

“Man, that was so cool,” he said in the video, later remarking that it’s “beautiful” that young people today know who he is and about the impact of A Different World . He also addressed his fans’ support of him following his stroke.

“Those words are important, and I feel it — I feel those prayers,” he said in the reel.

As Blavity previously reported , his family confirmed news of his health scare in a statement in November 2020. “It is out of sincere love that we share Sinbad, our beloved husband and father, is recovering from a recent stroke,” they said at the time. “Sinbad is a light source of love and joy for many generations. While he is beginning his road to recovery, we are faithful and optimistic that he will bring laughter into our hearts soon. Our family thanks you in advance for your love and support and ask for continued prayers for his healing. We also ask that you please respect our privacy during this time.”

The Michigan native also shared that he’s received messages via his website from people who have experienced similar health issues. He plans on replying to as many of those messages as he can. Toward the end of the reel, Sinbad revealed that he plans on making an official comeback.

“Expect to see more of me soon, and don’t freak out if you turn around and I’m standing right behind you. ‘Sinbad, I can’t believe you’re here!’ You can’t believe it? You better believe it. Miracles happen,” he said.

Fans poured in their support via the comments section, including celebrities like Wanda Sykes, Cedric the Entertainer, Howie Mandel, Holly Robinson Peete and more.

Judd Apatow commented, “Glad to see you doing so well! You were always riotously hilarious and super nice to everyone at the clubs when I was starting out. An inspiration to so many.”

Sinbad portrayed Coach Walter Oakes on The Cosby Show spinoff, which aired on NBC from 1987 to 1993.
