The fact that anyone reviews them badly…

The fact that anyone reviews them badly is insane to me. The staff on the SS La Venezia waited on us hand and foot, we were denied literally no request we made. Wait staff, cleaning staff, bar staff, cooks, desk staff, every person seemed happy to be there and sincere in their efforts to make your stay enjoyable. The tours and events are top notch, the people conducting them were entertaining and knowledgeable. What a killer vacation—if you’re on the fence about doing this, just stop thinking and do it. I really can’t imagine a world where I took issue with a single thing that has happened on this cruise. The food spread is excellent and diverse, every dish felt gourmet, and the vegetarian options were great. The cleaning staff is very attentive and hits your room twice a day if you don’t declare ‘do not disturb.’ Would do this many more times.

I'm a fan

My fiance and I just returned (like within the last 24 hours) from our first river cruise and it was dreamy. We traveled on the Burgundy & Provence itinerary starting in Lyon and ending in Arles. The staff onboard were phenomenal and took such great care of everyone. We met several other couples during our meals and excursions that we really bonded with. Food exceeded expectations and how nice for it to be all-inclusive. The French Balcony rooms were beautiful and had lots of storage space. Although I think the next category up has bigger bathrooms with tubs, so that might be worth the splurge. Cities/villages visited each had their own 'personality' and we spent a lot of time exploring. Most of the docking locations were within easy walking distance of the city center. They had umbrellas for use on rainy days, plus hiking sticks and bikes that you could check-out for the day. Probably should have used the bike in Arles, but live and learn! We'd absolutely book another one and now understand why others we met had done 5+ before this trip. Only regret is not booking the pre-cruise option in Paris, but that's on me.

You cant beat a Uniworld Cruise

Been on 17 Uniworld cruises now and they are all absolutely perfect. The boat are lovely, the staff are great and the trips out everyday are very very enjoyable. Sophie, who works in the Guernsey office, is especially helpful and knows a great deal about the cruises if you want any help. I can not recommend these cruises enough. The only downside I feel is their pricing structure as the prices change a lot and so it feels a little bit like a lottery when you book as you might find 2 weeks later the same cruise is lots cheaper and that can be a bit frustrating especially when your budget is quite tight as mine is.

Top quality river cruises - Highly recommended

Top quality river cruises. We have done the Bordeaux, Bourgogne, Rhine and Danube cruises - all different but of excellent standard. Met some great people to share unique travel experiences with. Nothing too much trouble! Highly recommended

Be very cautious in using this Travel…

Be very cautious in using this Travel Company. Booked a cruise through AAA during the pandemic with every intention of going on the trip. Just before travel date our doctor advised not to travel based on our age and the US State Department had travel warnings out for travel to Europe. Consequently we were forced to cancel. When AAA and I both tried to get back the one half cost of the trip penalty, Uniworld basically told us that 's too bad. Meanwhile our agent at AAA said she had used other travel companies and were able to attain full refunds for her customers during the Pandemic. I still might consider travel abroad but I definitely will not be using Uniworld.

MUST you go with Uniworld?

After a bike accident on my first day of a Uniworld 22 day Ultimate France River Cruise I was virtually confined to my cabin and, my life was in serious jeopardy, mainly from the cellulitis that developed in my knee a few days after the incident with Uniworld’s faulty bicycle. I was attended by three doctors and had three hospital visits during the 21 days. But had it not been for my own doctor in Australia, it was conceivable I may not have survived. Immediately on my return I briefed specialist Personal Injury Lawyers to make a claim on Uniworld for pain, suffering and medical expenses. I can only say that Uniworld’s response was appalling beyond belief. Apparently all the staff who had seen me three times a day, struggling to 50 or so metres to the dining room on my crutches had developed amnesia! I have since had to have a total knee replacement. Uniworld's ducking & weaving was astonishing. Here’s one quote from Marcelle Heimdal, Manager of Guest Relations & Reservation Services from Uniworld’s headquarters in Los Angeles: "The waiver also stipulates that guests assume all responsibility for any accidents or injury, and advises (in bold text) that Uniworld cannot be held responsible for any mechanical defects, and that the guest releases Uniworld for all liability. This is the same waiver you signed on board." Uniworld not only relied on the waver but on some of the dismissive fine print of our actual ‘Tickets’. They have many ways of fending off legal action, ultimately stipulating that, if you were crazy enough to initiate legal action against them, the claim could only be lodged in a Swiss court. These are not honest people to deal with. Let alone nice! If you do decide to book a trip with Uniworld, read the fine print on your ticket. And don’t borrow any of their equipment. It maybe safest not to eat any prawns or anything that could give you food poisoning. And, for God’s sake, don’t trip & fall. It could cost you your house (or your life).

I booked a cruise to travel this…

I booked a cruise to travel this November, for my birthday. I booked my airfare thru Uniworld also. Thinking it would be best, just in case anything happens one stop to better help me to the cruise and back home. My flight got canceled/changed going to paris. I saw this as a Hiccup at first. I reach out to Uniworld, hoping they could help. Much to my surprise they have had attitude: we have no control on the air. I will not go in details. its sad I was very excited a week ago to go, and now i still going because its paid for and I will hope the for the best on getting there. Their customer service before were great, of course that was before I paid them, now they are awful. If looking for River Cruise Company look for another one. I wish I had.

Very poor, not what we expected

My wife and I have been on 40+ ocean cruises but this was our first river cruise. We booked with Uniworld as part of the Red Carnation group, a hotel group that we frequent on a regular basis. We booked a Douro River cruise from Porto but was disappointed even before we stepped on the boat. Communication was poor regarding embarkation times and cruise itinerary, the information in our suite was from the previous week. Our main issue was the poor service in the restaurant, lack of organisation and lack of experienced staff. The food was ok but not great, but everything was hard work. At breakfast, if you asked for toast you need to ask for butter or you receive dry bread. If you ask for tea and coffee you must ask for milk and sugar if not you go without. The same for dinner, we were offered wine but no wine glasses on the table and that was the same every night. The restaurant staff were a new team and it showed. After a few days we finally found out the reason for the poor service, the cruise is not a Uniworld Cruise, it’s operated by a local contractor who has the license to operate on the Douro River. The boat and 2 butlers are supplied by Uniworld, everyone else is a local contractor. I did email the CEO of Uniworld with my comments but no reply. This is our first and last Uniworld Cruise.

Times change.

Times change. We have been on a Uniworld cruise and it was wonderful. Beautiful boats and excellent crew. Sadly, behind the scenes is a different story. Once we saw an excellent promotional presentation, then the last one was truly amateur. We had two Sales Managers reminiscent of the "Judith Chalmers" character played by Victoria Wood and the promised word from the CEO was a poorly presented video. But it gets worse. In spite of covid and the impact it has had on the travel industry, Uniworld has turned into what looks like a money grabbing holiday bucket shop. We were booked on a Christmas Cruise. When the final payment was due, Hungary and Austria (the bulk of the cruise) were not accepting UK travellers. I asked if we could delay payment until the situation was cleared up. I was told no, and that my only option was to cancel. As a gesture of goodwill (a phrase I hate) Uniworld agreed to hold my deposit as a Future Cruise Credit. No problem there. Now, with there being no tourist access to Austria, the cruise cannot be going ahead. I asked if this meant I could now have my deposit refunded and again was told no. Another cruise company I booked with, not only refunded all my money but gave us a substantial credit by way of apology. The other irritation with Uniworld is the way their pricing is all over the place. We found, after we'd cancelled, that they were offering the cruise for half price. No issue for us, but imagine how those that had paid full price must have been feeling. There are other pricing practices I find unacceptable, but not for here. I have told Uniworld I will book something to use the FCC, but it will be the last holiday I book with them. There are T's and C's, but there is also consideration for the customer.

Helpful Tips for future cruisers

Despite the way this review probably sounds like a lot of complaints, we really did have a wonderful time and Uniworld staff did a great job!!! Except for the issues I will discuss in what I hope is a helpful manner to future cruisers, everything was awesome! Food was fresh, plentiful, creative and delicious. Ship was very comfortable and kept very clean. Staff was kind, courteous, patient and very hard working. I would highly recommend Leaving the dinner clothes and any attempt at European fashion at home, Everyone everywhere just looks like a very casual American with logos and ball caps etc. Dinner was casual, just wear your respectable regular clothes. I could have saved a lot of space in my suitcase as I had a lot of fun anticipating our trip and planning and reading a lot of articles and maybe fake reviews that talked about dress code…especially Uniworld being dressier than other ship lines and how to blend in in Europe and not look like a tourist. (I think I am very naïve, we have not traveled in quite awhile) I was happy to anticipate "dressing up". The first night at dinner my view was of a hairy guy in a tank top! Thank goodness I did not have to see that again I should have listened to the reviews that said DO NOT OVERPACK! Again Staff, food, ship, room all excellent!. Too many excursions were centered on always ending up in shops and shopping areas. Now don’t get me wrong, we are shoppers and shopped so much we had to buy an extra suitcase for the way home. Needless to say our family loves us . With so little time though we wanted more time spent on local culture and less on making sure we had plenty of time for shops. We had a much better time looking up local things to do and also asking the staff what they recommended and then going out on our own. This is what happened on one of the only excursions we did go on: this is the description of one stop on the (extra fee) Black Forest Trip: “stop at the family-owned House of Black Forest Clocks, where you will learn how cuckoo clocks are made-and savor a slice of Black Forest cake, too.” The reality: This is a shop with a restaurant upstairs. Just a shop, not a museum, there is no presentation or explanation of the process of making the admittedly beautiful clocks. A shop filled with cuckoo clocks and aisles of the same touristy items we saw everywhere else, INLCUDING the next stop. The very adorable and charming owner and clock maker mingles a little and has a table where he does a little (just for show) carving while there are people in the shop. I expected more. Possibly to learn how cuckoo clocks are made per the description?????? The whole point of us going was to learn how they are made and then buy our clock. Maybe it’s us and we read more into the excursion explanations than is actually there? We did buy a Cuckoo Clock as we had planned, we both wanted one badly and we did find a gorgeous one along with a very rushed employee to sell it to us. The Black Forest Cake was delicious. At the next stop there was a shop with the same clocks and same aisles full of touristy items Now to the big tip! Watch out for sick people!!!!! We were placed in close quarters (excursion bus for example) with people who were obviously ill. Severe wet sounding constant cough (all day on 7 hour excursion) with no attempt at covering the mouth, they also couldn't stay awake. It was disgusting. Two men in particular, their wives refused to sit with them. The group of 4 all took separate seats. I am not sure why these people did not stay in their room as they looked extremely miserable. I can only speculate maybe because the extra excursions had a no refund policy? Also at what point does staff intervene when someone obviously ill is constantly in public areas? To be fair I understand this can be a very touchy issue. We ended up eating dinner in our room each night (the staff was wonderful about our repeated room service!!! We gave no explanation and they just smiled and did a great job) and staying away from organized excursions and onboard activities. We did end up with a pretty hefty case of covid, feels like a bad flu. (didn't know it was covid until we got home, and I know no one makes a big deal out of it anymore). We are still quite ill and are just staying home and resting. I am sure a tremendous amount of people that were on board our cruise are ill. One last thing, get the biggest cabin you can afford. We had the largest except for the suite. With the amount of time we spent in it trying to keep away from the sickies it was just big enough. The cabin was very nice, kept very clean by sweet staff. We would like to go on another Uniworld cruise, specifically Egypt. I will book differently as we paid full price and then kept getting offers for our same cruise with up to half off! I will take THAT as a learning experience!!!!!!!

Tauck or Scenic vs Uniworld?

We have done two Uniworld cruises - Castles Along the Rhine (2017) and Delightful Danube & Prague (2019).  The first was excellent in all respects; the second was enjoyable but seemed to lack some of the quality of the first (which I posted about afterward).  As we look forward to being able to cruise again, we are evaluating which cruise line to book.  Going back with Uniworld is still a consideration - in hopes that the issues we noticed in 2019 were a one-off.  But we're also looking at Scenic and Tauck.  (We'd also consider Crystal but are concerned about their financial stability.)  Would love to get thoughts/suggestions from those who have cruised  any or all of these lines.  (If it helps, we are early 60's and active.  Don't mind dressing up a bit for dinner but not interested in a stuffy/high-brow atmosphere.)  Thank you.

I can't speak to Tauck but we've sailed with Scenic and Uniworld. We thought both were outstanding but for us, Scenic's special excursions and events won us over. The other obvious difference is décor. Do you prefer the ultra clean contemporary of Scenic or the very fancy, fussy of Uniworld? Both are impressive, it's just which speaks to you. One final thought. We so enjoyed the fun casual atmosphere our Aussie shipmates brought to the party.

Good luck with your decision. I'm pretty sure you can't go wrong with any of the companies you listed. Let us know what you decide.

Wings55 - Thank you for your input -- very helpful!  We don't really have a preference in terms of decor - just the overall level of service and the feeling of value for our vacation dollar.  The excursions/events are important to us, and that is one area where we felt that our last Uniworld cruise fell a little short.  So that might be a good reason to try Scenic.  As well as the fun Aussie shipmates!

Which river were you planning to cruise?  I would take a good look at the competing itineraries and excursions.  They may have different stops and different choices.

Gourmet Gal -  Good point.  Thank you.

Did three cruises with Uniworld.  2015 - 8 days Prague to Basel, 2017 8 days Lyon to Arles, and 2019 19 days Bucharest to Prague.

2015 on River Ambassador (small older ship, now part of U program) was magnificent.  Cabins extremely small. but functional.  Passenger care and attention unparalleled.  Excursions well planned and guides professional.  CD top notch.  Fellow passengers engaging and gracious. Never more than 20 in an excursion group, including those requiring bus. Determined to book another river cruise with Uniworld at completion.

2017 on SS Catherine (new SS Class).  Cabin larger than River Ambassador (French Balcony on both ships) and comfortable.  Larger ship w/more passengers, but excursion groups and bus population similar.  excursion guides not equal to 2015 and excursions themselves rather "spontaneous".  CD less engaged and, unfortunately, overwhelmed by a large group.  Food quality inferior to previous cruise, servers again 1st class.  Notably, Maitre de absent and quality and availability of wines diminished.

2019 on SS Beatrice.  Horrible ship.  Rooms (again top deck French Balcony) reconfigured to accommodate rear "chef's kitchen", that was not used during the entire 19 day cruise.  Result, cabins with less actual useable floor space.  Had to ask to have table and chair removed from room to free up floor space.  Beginning of the new CEO era, many passengers products of the "deal of the month" new marketing programs.  Excursions double capacity we had previously experienced (2015, 2017).  Guides good from Bucharest to just before Hungary.  From Hungary-West, guides and excursions "iffy" at best.

Again, Maitre de absent, but re-designed dining room was a killer for servers and staff - limited access at mid room from port to starboard, creating (obviously frustrating) obstacle to efficient service.  Server staff non-present on sun deck on day-cruises.  Last two port excursions not delivered, no verifiable reason provided.  Post cruise in Prague a disaster.  We circled Prague for two hours on a packed bus (passed our hotel twice before stopping).  Hotel at least two stars below the one we stayed in just 4 years earlier with Uniworld.  So bad, we departed the next day and went to Dubrovnik.

To this day, we receive the "Great Deal", "Deal ending tomorrow" and "Deal Extended" email blast from Uniworld, as past passengers.  Uniworld has changed since 2015. We have booked elsewhere.

Have never traveled with Uniworld, but there have been lots of comments on these boards about the deterioration in overall quality with Uniworld.

We had the same dilemma and Scenic & Tauck were our finalists.

We like having no added charges & casual dining.

We choose Scenic for some of the same reasons listed, although I fear the Aussies are going to be excluded from our September cruise.

I like that Tauck also offers some really good land excursion tours as well.  Their Scotland trip may be our next visit to Europe!

We have river cruised with Scenic 8 times they have never failed to produce an absolutely superb product. Before anyone asks we would use another company if they came up with an itinerary we wanted to pursue. The crews are amazing and you can get away without opening your purse or wallet. Your right at the moment I would miss the Aussies but it’s not possible to go at the moment next year here we come. We are off to our place in Scotland in September looking forward to that.

I have sailed with Uni and Tauck, both very good but different.  I felt the quality of the tours with Tauck was the biggest difference.  There are three tour managers onboard and smaller groups with more options within each excursion.  Fast walkers, slower walkers, more in-depth tour or quick overview tour with more free time. Some days there are choices of tour.  Also with Tauck quite often there will be a special onshore dinner once in the cruise.  The entertainment on Tauck was much more interesting and frequent.  The cabins on Tauck seemed to be laid out better, especially the bathroom.  There are two dining venues on many Tauck ships - not sure about Uniworld. I also think the Tauck passenger  count tends to be lower than Uni.  If itinerary is the same I would choose Tauck and in fact that’s just what I did on an upcoming Douro cruise. Both lines have brand new especially built ships and I’m happy to sail with Tauck again.

Thank you all for taking time to respond.  I value and appreciate your thoughts very much.  After our 2019 cruise (SS Beatrice), I posted about the decline in quality.  At least one responder suggested that maybe it was just our perception.  So I'm thankful for the validation that at least some others have noticed the same thing.  Very sad, because our first experience with Uniworld was exceptional.  We will spend some time looking over the Tauck and Scenic itineraries, as it sounds like either one would be worth a try for our next cruise.

boblerm

I have not done Scenic, but  have done 2 cruises on both Tauck and Uniworld.  I think that both of these lines offer an excellent product, but for me , Tauck is a cut above.

This is from the summary of my Uniworld trip report:

Finally, as much as enjoyed this trip and was impressed with the Uniworld product, I feel I would be remiss if I didn't mention that I think I would have been a lot more blown away had I never cruised on Tauck.  I say this not to demean Uniworld, but it is difficult for me to not compare.  There are quite a few things that Tauck does, that Uniworld does not , here are some of the most notable:

·    Uniworld had one person who is Cruise Manager, responsible for the organization of onboard activities and tours.  Tauck has a Cruise Director for onboard activities and three(!) Tour Directors.  As good as A.J. was, there is no way that one person can do the job compared  to 4. The Tour Directors are all very knowledgeable, but  each have their own areas of special expertise.  This is very helpful in daily briefings, and in having lectures and presentations during the cruise.

·    Gala evenings, such as a dinner in a castle with opera singers and classical music

·    Special tours such as a tour of an opera house when it is closed to the public.  Including a surprise performance by opera singers.

·    Evening onboard cultural events, such as a string quartet in Prague, local dancers in Strasbourg, Alpine Horn player in Basel. They have other evening events such as Name That Tune and trivia.  On one of our cruises, the crew put on a show.  At the very least, there is a piano player in the evening.

Having said that, given the fact that Uniworld's portfolio of itineraries is far more extensive than that of Tauck, there is little doubt in my mind that we will cruise with Uniworld again.  And when we do, we will do so with eager anticipation and high expectations.

Thanks Bob for this comparison.  It sums up what I have concluded based on my research:  Tauck is great, but the itineraries are very limited.  [I can't get past the Uniworld decor, and after viewing their new ships for the Douro and especially Venice it is clear that over-the-top is their style.]  Crystal is another line with great reviews but limited itineraries.  So I will be paying close attention this spring with back-to-back AMA and Scenic cruises, both lines with extensive itineraries and great reviews.  [I have already cruised three times on AMA, always very good – the question is whether Scenic can surpass them.  I already like the design of the Scenic ships and the itineraries/excursions as described.]

I just received a brochure from Scenic and decided to compare it with our Crystal itinerary.  It is almost sold out for a Rhine cruise next July or August.  Be sure to check availability as well as comparisons.

Great Roz. When and where are you going?

My next cruise is Tauck's Duoro River in October.

Fingers crossed! 🤞

@boblerm , my cruise is Yuletide Spirit: Amsterdam to Brussels leaving Amsterdam on December 6.  I'm sailing on ms Grace.

Honestly, what attracted me to this cruise was NO single supplement, visiting The Netherlands and Belgium, and it's easy for me to get time off between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The Christmas markets are an added bonus and it will be nice to see the cities all lit up and decorated, but that wasn't the main attraction.  I think Tauck may be the only river cruise line that does the Dutch and Belgian Christmas markets.

Hi boblerm,

I second Roz when I say that your post is making me look forward to our first Tauck cruise even more.  Sadly, it's not until Summer '22 as our sailing was canceled for this Summer.  We've done four Uniworld trips (and will sail with them again for sure) but thought we'd branch out & try Tauck.

I've done two with Tauck, with my third booked for this November.  So I can't compare, but can say I've been very impressed with Tauck.  We've made continuing friendships on both cruises, so from that perspective, I find the other passengers interesting and fun.  The excursions always seem to have a little extra to them, that I'm not sure you get with other companies.  We did the Rhine river cruise that ended at Oktoberfest in Munich and it was unbelievable all they had done to make that an amazing experience.  Right down to a full phone consultation ahead of time about our sizing, so that we arrived to perfectly fitting outfits that had been rented for us to wear to the fest.  We've had bartenders go looking for local craft beers for my husband while we are stopped in a town, just based on casual conversations at the bar.  Guides have used their free time to show us their favorite out of the way spots or to help us order in a restaurant for meals on our own.  Food has been outstanding, and the lectures and entertainment on board have been great.  Again, I have nothing to compare it to, but you certainly wouldn't be disappointed with Tauck.

Would like to second that we met much friendlier, engaging and just interesting people on Truck than Uniworld.  Honestly don’t know why that would be but there was a definite difference.

That's great to hear!  We've done 4 Uniworld's & have met some nice people but they've been more of the idle chitchat while waiting for the bus type of thing.  We've done 9 land tours with Tauck & have met fun people on every one.  We were even in on a wedding proposal at the top of Blarney Castle in Ireland on one trip.  I always just thought that since a river cruise has a lot more people on it than a bus tour maybe that was why people weren't quite as chatty.

Just realized my “Truck” typo!  Whoops.  I’m sure it’s possible to meet like-minded people anywhere but I noticed a difference on the cruises I was on.  I think with the cocktail hour, seating in the restaurants and small tour groups you end up being pretty social on river cruises in general.

My experience has been that the people that I met on Tauck and Uniworld both were equally friendly, well traveled and interesting.  I would not use this as a factor to be considered in choosing a cruise.

Why Uniworld is the best in the world for river cruises

The cruise line our discerning, nay f ussy, travel editor can't fault

uniworld ship

A river cruise line you might never have heard of, especially if you’re used to sailing with the biggest players in the industry, Uniworld can't be beaten when it comes to luxury holidays on water - and we're here to tell you why.

Offering an exceptional travel experience, even beyond cruise holidays , Uniworld's offering left us in awe after we experienced the cruise line for the first time on a seven-night Venetian cruise on its stunning ship, S.S. La Venezia ( try it with TV's James Martin, Monica Galetti and Angela Hartnett next year ).

We're not the only ones to be blown away by the company, either. The boutique cruise line has dozens of awards and accolades under its belt, including the Best River Cruise Line award in the prestigious Telegraph Travel Awards and a top three spot in Travel & Leisure's World’s Best Awards .

There's simply nothing else like it, perhaps because it is a cruise line founded by a five-star boutique hotel brand, which believes 'no request is too large and no detail is too small.' Everything from the service to the food is delivered to impress and once you take to the water with Uniworld , you are unlikely to ever look back.

To give us the most authentic feel for the river cruise line, which attracts only the few in search of extraordinary holidays, we explored the ship from top to bottom (including going below deck in the most luxurious way possible) and spent a week hearing first-hand what guests from, Kent to Australia, thought of the company before we felt confident to declare Uniworld as the world's best river cruise line .

With a high returning guest rate (it's not unheard of to be sailing with guests who are on their seventh or even their 50th Uniworld cruise) and staff who are proud to say "we don't consider ourselves to have any competitors," this is the bucket list cruise line you'll want to tick off again and again.

Read on for our honest review of why Uniworld is the best river cruise line in the world…

The style and decor

uniworld

Stepping onto a Uniworld ship is like entering a boutique hotel - but better. The style is as elegant and refined as it gets, with the finest details and luxury wherever you turn. Uniworld's small ships take inspiration from their destinations, complementing their surroundings while maintaining the sophistication of the brand. Modelled after sister company Red Carnation Hotels, which has the likes of Rubens at the Palace in London and The Oyster Box in South Africa among its collection, the ships are essentially luxury hotels on water.

You won't hear loud announcements and the high staff-to-guest ratio means you're not just a number - they'll remember your name. You can expect the finest decor, with bespoke fabric, original works of art and beautiful antiques. On La Venezia, which you can experience with Good Housekeeping , the fabrics are by Venetian maker Fortuny and the chandeliers and mirrors made from Murano glass.

The suites throughout Uniworld ships have marble bathrooms, and in every room or suite an incredibly comfortable Savoir bed awaits for restful nights on the water.

The destinations

uniworld

While we're almost certain we could enjoy a Uniworld cruise, wherever it's heading, the river cruise specialist does its utmost to bring travellers the most gorgeous locations to explore in style. Want to visit Venice and its islands ? Uniworld will take you to discover the highlights and see the islands many tourists haven't heard of. Fancy experiencing a Nile cruise ? You can tick off the Pyramids, the Valley of the Kings and the sounds and sights of Cairo while enjoying the luxuries of Uniworld.

Or, maybe you have a far-flung cruise in mind? Uniworld's Mekong River cruise in Cambodia and Vietnam takes you to ancient temples and gives you the chance to meet local villagers, while sleeping in five-star surroundings on stunning ship, Mekong Jewel.

The cruise line's Bordeaux , Danube and Douro itineraries are other fantastic itineraries guests keep returning for.

uniworld

We can't praise Uniworld's staff enough and neither can other guests. Guest Deb, from Pennsylvania, who has been on six Uniworld cruises, told us: "Every staff member makes you feel special. They really want to make your experience wonderful." Meanwhile, Joanne, from New Jersey, said: "The staff get to know you quickly and intuit what you want and need. They bring you something before even you know you want it. I don't think you get the same attention at a hotel."

With a 1 to 2.4 staff-to-guest ratio, it's clear that service is a high priority for Uniworld, but as Joanne added, "they're helpful but not in your face."

Wendy, from Warwickshire, told us how she would frequently help herself to the orange water available for guests at the bar and one time made a passing comment to the bar staff about how much she enjoyed the drink. By the end of the day, she found a carafe of orange water in her suite.

Another guest, Charlotte, from New Hampshire, described the staff like a "relative who knows you, knows your likes and your dislikes," saying that it makes the cruise "special."

The incredible excursions

uniworld

While life on board the ship is a joy, stepping off a Uniworld cruise will leave you with fabulous memories you can't miss. Uniworld cruises are packed with carefully-curated included and optional excursions, which include after-hours tours of popular attractions (the perfect way to skip the queues), walking tours that provide a look at local life, and the privilege of meeting working people in their workshops.

During our cruise, we had an outstanding after-hours visit of Basilica di San Marco, one of Venice's most popular sites, where we had the cathedral to ourselves and were able to bask in the tranquility and beauty of this world-famous attraction after the crowds had left.

One solo guest, who wished to enjoy Uniworld's excursions at her own pace, told us that she had booked the same cruise twice, back-to-back, so she could spread out her days and ensure she didn't miss out on anything.

The butler service

uniworld

While you'll be treated to a personalised experience regardless of the cabin you book, suite guests on Uniworld cruises have the benefit of their very own butler who will take this service to another level. Working to the motto that 'no request is too large, no detail is too small,' the suite butlers, trained to the standards required by Buckingham Palace, do everything they can to make you feel important.

Whether you would like a special dinner organised just for you and your loved one, or a private sabering ceremony (a champagne sabering ceremony by the ship's butler at the start of a sailing is a Uniworld tradition), your wish is their command.

While we didn't have any extravagant requests for butler Marko during our time on La Venezia, we knew he was at our service for anything we needed, whether it was a cup of tea brought to our room, or help unpacking our suitcase.

The behind-the-scenes dinner

uniworld

If you've always wanted to see what life is like below deck, Uniworld has the most luxurious way to do it. Its Progressive Dinners (extra charge, with a maximum of 10 passengers) take you to the bridge to find out about life as a captain, from the captain himself. The dinners are usually a surprise so stop reading now if you'd prefer no spoilers...

They might take you into the kitchen to see how the ship's elaborate meals are meticulously prepared. A look inside the steaming hot engine could be part of the tour, as well as a chat with the laundry staff and a peek at the staff room. The best part is tucking into a different dish along the way, culminating with your main meal in the ship's private dining room, all while meeting the wonderful people who make the cruise holiday perfect.

The thoughtful touches

uniworld

Whether its sustainability, guest safety or satisfying your hunger, Uniworld goes above and beyond. You'll find compostable slippers and a gifted water bottle for each guest to stay hydrated while caring for the environment. Breakfasts, lunches and dinners are elaborate enough, with a varied selection and locally sourced ingredients used to create delicious feasts, but if you find yourself feeling peckish in between, the Panini Bar has pastries and fruit you can help yourself to and panini that are made to order.

Another observation we made was the care and attention of the tour managers on the excursions. During our after-hours tour of Basilica di San Marco, the tour manager stood at the entrance of the crypt, with its low ceiling, and warned each and every guest to watch their head as they made their way down the stairs.

Back on the ship, the housekeeping team are nicknamed 'fairies' for being in and out of the rooms without a peep. Then there's the River Heritage Club that rewards your loyalty with complimentary laundry, cocktail parties and savings on your next trip.

It's truly all inclusive

uniworld

On a Uniworld cruise, you can rest assured that everything is included. Premium drinks are part of the package at any time of day and there's an extensive programme of activities throughout the cruise without needing to put your hand in your pocket. Gratuities are included so you don't have to bring extra cash for crew and tour managers), either.

On board entertainment can be enjoyed at no extra cost and Uniworld goes the extra mile to offer an all-inclusive experience that doesn't compromise on quality. The food and drink is excellent, and when it comes to the sightseeing, each group has its own guide for a more intimate tour experience.

Of course, there are ways to upgrade your experience if you wish, with dinners, premium excursions and pre- or post-cruise land extensions available.

You can combine your sailing with amazing land stays

uniworld best river cruise line

As experts in luxurious holidays, Uniworld knows exactly how to make your cruise extra-special and has some amazing river cruises with five-star land or rail options. For example, in India you could enjoy seven nights on the Ganges Voyager II, as well as nights in the Golden Triangle staying in Oberoi Hotels.

FIND OUT MORE

Or you could sail the Mekong River for seven nights, before exploring the cities of Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Siem Reap while staying in top hotels.

You really can't fault it

uniworld

After many conversations with other guests, we failed to find a reason not to love Uniworld. Not only do the staff think of everything a guest could possibly need before they've thought of it themselves, but they continue to look for ways to improve.

We received a feedback form on day two of the cruise (naturally, we struggled to provide anything negative) but one of our new friends told us that she mentioned that she would have liked some Greek yoghurt and additional healthy options at the breakfast buffet. The next morning and every morning for the rest of the cruise, there was Greek yoghurt and a large selection of fruit at the table.

Good Housekeeping has partnered with Uniworld to bring you a selection of cruises exclusive to our readers, including the Ganges and India's Golden Triangle , Bordeaux with Tom Kerridge , the marvellous Mekong River , Venice with Monica Galetti and more.
