The visa processing time for UAE residents travelling to the United Kingdom (UK) has been substantially reduced which has resulted in increased passenger traffic to the European country.

UAE residents were experiencing visa delays in 2022 due to multiple factors including, a significantly higher demand for travel and a passenger cap levied by the London Heathrow airport.

During the summer of last year, many residents cancelled their travel plans to the UK as the visitor visa processing time had exceeded seven weeks. London is one of the most popular destinations as thousands of UAE residents fly to the city for short and long holidays as well as summer breaks. Last year, London Heathrow airport’s decision to cap departing passengers at 100,000 per day also impacted flights.

“The processing time for UK visas has reverted to the 15 working days standard, and the turnaround time for Priority and Super Priority visas have likewise normalised,” VFS Global said in a statement to Khaleej Times.

Atish Thapa, head of marketing and business development, Cleartrip, said travel to the UK has become easier than it used to be as Covid-19 restrictions have been removed, capacity has been increased by airlines, airfares have gone down and getting a visa is also much faster.

  • Revealed: 6 reasons why Dubai is one of world's top wedding destinations
  • UAE travel: 12 new flights announced for residents this year

“Emirates and British Airways have increased capacity so the airfares have gone down from the peak level seen last year. UK immigration is giving visas faster and businessmen can even get visas in 48 hours at times, depending on the requirement. Hence, there is a sizeable increase in travel and traffic to Europe, specifically the UK,” added Thapa.

The Dubai-based carrier has announced it will resume its second daily service to London Stansted in May 2023, boosting its London operations to 11 daily flights, including six times daily to London Heathrow and three times daily to Gatwick. It will also scale up its A380 operations with the iconic double-decker returning to Birmingham on July 1, 2023.

Mir Wasim Raja, manager of MICE & Holidays at Galadari International Travel Services, also confirmed that visas are being processed faster now, taking approximately 15 days to a month for the residents.

“Visas are being processed and approved faster as compared to last year. Therefore, we are getting a good number of queries and bookings for travel to the UK. A good number of families are also booking now to travel to the Eid Al Fitr holidays in April,” he said.

Live updates: follow the latest news on Omicron

Abu Dhabi updated its travel rules for tourists on Thursday.

Travellers were reminded to check visitAbuDhabi.ae for the latest information and Covid-19 precautionary measures before making plans.

Here are the rules for vaccinated and unvaccinated visitors from both green list and non-green list countries:

Travellers who are vaccinated or exempt from vaccination flying into Abu Dhabi

1. First, check the UAE recognises your vaccine. Abu Dhabi accepts vaccines approved by the World Health Organisation and the UAE’s Ministry of Health and Prevention Society.

2. Travellers must download the Federal Authority of Identity and Citizenship (ICA UAE Smart) app or visit the ica.gov.ae website to complete the Register Arrivals Form 48 hours before the travel date. All travellers will need to validate their vaccination (or exemption) 48 hours before travel via these platforms.

They will be asked to submit personal information, passport details, travel itinerary, address when in Abu Dhabi and a copy of their vaccine certificate.

These will need to be approved before the journey. The average time for the Medical Committee to process applications is 48 hours.

3. Be cleared to fly. Travellers must take a PCR test within 48 hours of their departure and fly only once a negative test result has been received.

4. Upon arrival at Abu Dhabi International Airport, travellers will need to take another PCR test (only children under 12 and individuals with official exemptions are exempt). This PCR test is available within the terminal and is free of cost, with results received within 90 minutes. Travellers can depart the airport and wait in their hotel for the results.

For unvaccinated travellers flying into Abu Dhabi

1. All the pre-flight rules are the same. Travellers must take a PCR test within 48 hours of their departure and fly only once a negative test result has been received.

3. The same PCR testing rules on arrival are applicable.

How are rules different for green list versus non-green list countries?

1. If the unvaccinated traveller comes from a green list country , they will need to take another PCR test on days six and nine (the day of arrival is day one). They will not be required to quarantine if the result is negative. If positive, they must quarantine.

2. If the unvaccinated traveller comes from a non-green list country, they will need to quarantine. If their PCR result taken at the airport is negative, they can go to the hotel and quarantine for 10 days.

If positive, they will be given a wristband to wear during their 10-day quarantine period.

Both positive and negative travellers from the non-green list will need to take a second PCR test at a Seha testing centre on day nine. If the traveller was previously positive and then shows a negative, they can remove their wristband.

If travellers have transited through a green list country from a non-green list country to Abu Dhabi but have spent less than 10 days in the green list location before arriving in Abu Dhabi, they must still complete the quarantine in Abu Dhabi.

Any time spent in the green list country before arriving in Abu Dhabi will count towards the 10-day quarantine period.

Abu Dhabi border scanners for Covid-19 are in place for commuters on the E11. Chris Whiteoak / The National

Tourists coming from other emirates

Vaccinated tourists must present proof of their full (double) vaccination status via their home country’s official vaccination certificate through a mobile application or physical certificate.

They must also present a negative PCR test result received within the past 14 days if they were in the UAE, or a negative 48-hour PCR test obtained from their home country. Unvaccinated visitors can enter with a negative PCR test obtained within the last 96 hours.

Fully vaccinated and unvaccinated international travellers coming into Abu Dhabi via Dubai or other emirates must follow the same guidelines as the vaccinated and unvaccinated international travellers flying direct, plus a few additional on-ground measures.

These include:

1. Be cleared to fly. Depending on departure country or airline, travellers may be required to take a PCR test within 48 hours of their departure, with a negative result mandatory. Travellers are advised to check official channels or airline requirements ahead of travel. Information on those required to take the test ahead of travelling can be found on the Emirates Airline website.

2. Register and share personal information. Download the ICA UAE Smart app or visit the ica.gov.ae website to complete their Register Arrivals Form 48 hours before the travel date.

3. Depending on the traveller’s departure country, they may be required to take a PCR test upon arrival at Dubai International Airport or Sharjah International Airport. If they take the test at the airport, they must remain in their hotel until results are received. If positive, the traveller will undergo isolation and follow the health authority guidelines of each emirate.

4. All passengers travelling to Abu Dhabi via the road will be scanned by an EDE mobile scanning device at the entry point of the emirate.

For tourists entering Abu Dhabi via the Dubai/Abu Dhabi Road entry point, the Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi has assigned the right-hand lane (Lane 1) as a dedicated tourist lane.

This lane also has a designated guest’s service office and officials to help tourists.

Anyone with potential Covid-19 symptoms will be sent for a free rapid antigen test, with results delivered within 20 minutes. If the test is positive, travellers can continue into Abu Dhabi but must isolate either at a quarantined hotel or their accommodation, if visiting friends or family.

5. Vaccinated tourists must present proof of their full (double) vaccination status via their home country’s official vaccination certificate through a mobile application or physical certificate and present a negative PCR test result obtained within the past 14 days. Unvaccinated tourists can enter by presenting a negative PCR test result obtained within the past 96 hours.

6. For the vaccinated, there will be no further testing or quarantine measures in Abu Dhabi if they test negative.

7. For an unvaccinated traveller who originally comes from a green list country and through Dubai or the other emirates, they will not be required to quarantine once they arrive in Abu Dhabi.

If the unvaccinated traveller originally comes from a non-green list country and through Dubai or the other emirates, they will be required to quarantine for 10 days once they arrive in Abu Dhabi. If they spent some time in Dubai, or other emirates, before arriving in Abu Dhabi, these days will be counted as the part of the 10 days.

Entry to attractions in Abu Dhabi

To enter public attractions in Abu Dhabi, the majority of which allows access to vaccinated visitors only, people will need to present proof of their full (double) vaccination status via their home country’s official vaccination certificate or by their home country Covid-19 response mobile application, along with a negative PCR test result, obtained within the past 14 days.

Unvaccinated tourists will not have access to attractions, except for hotel accommodation.

People can download the UAE's test and vaccine app, Al Hosn, to show the green status to enter malls and attractions in the emirate.

What are the isolation rules in Abu Dhabi?

In order to end their isolation period, people who tested positive for Covid-19 must get two negative PCR results 24 hours apart or conduct a PCR test on days eight and 10, and complete 10 days in isolation with no symptoms presented in the final three days of quarantine, after a medical assessment.

Those with mild or moderate symptoms or who do not suffer from chronic illnesses must retest in any health facility in the emirate while continuing to isolate.

If this test is positive, the patient will be contacted by a specialist and told to complete isolation procedures.

Patients in these categories must also receive two negative PCR tests within 24 hours in order to end isolation. But they are urged to continue to comply with precautionary measures once they resume activities.

People who are close contacts will receive a text telling them to take a PCR test and to self-register in home quarantine through a link provided in the message.

Fully vaccinated people must quarantine for seven days, with a 10-day requirement if unvaccinated.

Those who record a positive test must then follow the same protocols set out for those who contract the virus.

Those who test negative should take an additional PCR test – on day six for those who are vaccinated and day nine for those unvaccinated.

If the result is again negative, they can end isolation in line with Covid-19 safety rules.

How often is the green list updated?

Regularly. The most recent changes were made on January 1 and came into effect from January 3.

As of January 3, the list will comprise 71 countries.

The UK, which has reported a surge in Covid-19 cases fuelled by the Omicron variant , was removed, as were Turkey, Jordan, Qatar, Russia and Lebanon.

Travelling to UK from UAE? Be prepared for two-month delay in getting visa

Travel & tourism.

Those in a rush may pay Dh1,500 for a priority service

Stock - London Economy / uk

Dubai: It’s still no-joy for UAE residents wanting to take UK visas, with waiting periods extending to more than two months. The irony of it all is that in the coming weeks, UAE-UK air travel volumes are showing more signs of a return to normalcy after a hectic summer that involved daily limits on outbound passengers from London Heathrow.

Though getting an appointment only takes around 10 days, the actual visa is taking more than 60 days, according to travel industry sources. “UK visa is in high demand right now, but the long waiting time is really discouraging people from going ahead with it,” said a spokesperson for Zabeel Travel. “Earlier, it used to take only 5-10 days to get the visa and the process was really easy.”

The difficulties in obtaining a UK visa comes even as getting a Schengen visa is becoming relatively easier for UAE residents after several weeks of long waiting periods. As opposed to waiting 3-4 months for a visa interview, it’s now down to one month or under.

But for the UK, visit visas, including standard visitor visa applications, are taking on average seven weeks to process. However, some applications might take longer, said UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) and VFS Global in a statement.

“UKVI are working hard to process applications to get back to the three-week service standard,” said the statement. “We are experiencing very high global demand meaning in some cases, it may take longer to process visas.”

For those willing to pay a premium of Dh1,500, UK has introduced a ‘Priority Visa Service,’ with a drastically reduced processing time of 5-6 days. This is for new customers applying in the sponsored work routes and students.

Industry sources said the backlog is mainly due to an influx of Ukrainian refugees wanting to enter the UK, plus the flight disruptions have only piled on to these issues. Thousands of flights have been cancelled in UK and Europe over the last few months due to staffing shortages and union strikes. Despite this, UAE-UK is among the busiest air routes in the world and London was Dubai’s top destination in the first half of this year with 1.3 million passengers. (Saudi capital Riyadh came in second with 910,000 passengers, followed by Mumbai with 726,000 passengers.)

There will soon be easier entry Emiratis and nationals of other GCC countries as they will be exempt from visa requirements to visit UK from 2023. This will make them the first countries to benefit from the UK’s new visa scheme, the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).

The travel permit, which is expected to be launched online soon, will require passengers to fill out an online application and it can be done anytime up to a few days before departure to the country.

According to official data, the UK granted more than 1.6 million visas and permits in the year ending March 2022. While this is only around half when compared to 2019 figures, this was still 145 per cent higher than 2020 levels.

Of the visas granted in the 12 months to March, 38 per cent were to visit, 29 per cent were to study, 17 per cent were to work, 3 per cent were for family reasons, and 13 per cent for other reasons.

There were an estimated 42.9 million passenger arrivals in the year ending March 2022, more than twice as many as in the year earlier.

How to Get a UK Tourist Visa from UAE

The application process for a UK tourist visa mainly involves an online application form and an appointment at a visa application centre. First, you have to choose from the pool of different types of UK visas and determine the kind of visa that suits your requirement as a tourist from UAE. The following step-by-step guidelines shall help you navigate the process of getting a UK tourist visa from start to end.

1. Determine Your Required Visa Type

Different types of uk visas.

There are numerous types of UK visas depending on your nationality, purpose of visit, duration of stay, and personal circumstances and skills. There are standard visitor visas, work visas, student visas, marriage visitor visas, family visas, ancestry visas etc. However, there are three possible visa options for a tourist to consider and determine the suitable one.

– Visa Not Required

The first thing to determine is whether you need a visa to enter the UK. Depending on your nationality, as per your passport, you might not require a visa at all. For example, if you are a Canadian national residing in the UAE, you are exempted from the visa requirement to travel to the UK for a stay shorter than 6 months. Similarly, citizens of the USA, EU member states, and certain commonwealth countries do not need a visa to stay in the UK for no longer than 6 months.

You can check whether you require a visa to enter the UK here .

– Electronic Visa Waiver

Instead of a Standard Visitor Visa, nationals of some middle-eastern countries, including the UAE, have the option to enter the UK with an Electronic Visa Waiver (EVW) . The UK Electronic Visa Waiver, a digital alternative to regular visitor visas, can be availed by the nationals of the following countries if their stay is no longer than six months for tourism, business, study, or medical treatment:

  • Saudi Arabia
  • United Arab Emirates

If you are a national of one of the six countries mentioned above and residing in UAE, the easiest option is to go for an Electronic Visa Waiver (EVW).

– Standard Visitor Visa

Suppose you belong neither to any nationalities exempted from the UK visa requirement nor to the nationalities that can avail of an Electronic Visa Waiver. In that case, you must get a Standard Visitor Visa to travel to the UK as a tourist. Those eligible for an Electronic Visa Waiver can also get a UK Standard Visitor Visa. You can usually stay up to 6 months in the UK with a standard visitor visa. However, in certain circumstances like academics and medical treatment, you might be permitted to stay longer than six months.

To get a UK Standard Visitor Visa, you must apply online and attend an appointment at a visa application centre before you travel to the UK. Suppose you plan to visit the UK as a tourist regularly. In that case, you may opt for the long-term standard visitor visa, which will help you avoid the visa application process each time you travel, although the maximum stay per visit would remain 6 months.

The earliest you can apply for a visitor visa is three months before your journey. You should begin your visa application process as soon as possible to relax and prepare for your travel comfortably.

2. Gather the Required Documents

You must keep the following documents ready for a seamless visa application process. Check the documents required for a UK tourist visa from UAE.

List of Required Documents

1. Passport

Your passport must be valid during the entire course of your ijju stay in the UK. It must also have at least one page blank for your Standard Visitor Visa.

2. Proof of Accommodation

Proof showing where you will be staying in the UK.  Documents such as hotel reservation, host invitation, confirmation by a tour operator or rental agreement/contract will qualify as sufficient proof of accommodation.

 3. Proof of Financial Means

To show that you have sufficient funds to live in the UK, you should produce bank statements or proof of earnings (such as a letter from your employer)

4. Proof of Travel History

Previous travel documents/passports which indicate your travel history.

5. Proof of Legal Residence

If you are not a UAE national or your right to reside in UAE is not mentioned in your passport, you should furnish documents to confirm your legal residence in the UAE, to apply for a UK visitor visa from UAE.

6. Proof of Employment/Education Status

To demonstrate your employment or education status, you must produce either of the following.

  • If you are an employee, a letter from your employer on company letterhead, with information regarding your role, salary, and duration of employment.
  • If you are self-employed, business registration documents or recent invoices.
  • If you are a student, a letter from your institution on official letterhead confirming your studentship and leave of absence.

Additional Documents Required if You Are Under 18

1. Document Showing the Relationship between You and Your Parent

Such as birth certificates, adoption papers etc.

2. Copy of photo page of Guardian’s Passport (if parents are not applying for the visa)

Ensure that their passport number and signature are included. If they don’t have a passport, produce another document with their signature.

3. Signed letter from your parent (if you are not travelling with your parent)

Additional Documents Required if You Have a Sponsor

If someone in the UK is providing your travel or accommodation, you must produce:

  • Letter of invitation from the host
  • Document showing the relationship between you and the sponsor (family, employer etc.)
  • Legal residence document of your sponsor

Understanding the UK Visa Application Fee

  • The Electronic Visa Waiver costs 30 Euros, which is approximately 120 AED.
  • The fee for a UK Standard Visitor visa is approximately equivalent to 500 AED.
  • The fee for a 2-year long-term standard visitor visa is approximately equivalent to 1800 AED.
  • The fee for a 5-year long-term standard visitor visa is approximately equivalent to 3200 AED.
  • The fee for a 10-year long-term standard visitor visa is approximately equivalent to 4900 AED.

3. Complete the Online Application Form

The online application form is the key step to getting your UK standard visitor visa before attending an appointment at a visa application centre. Once you start the online application form, you can save it any time and finish it later by signing back in. The following is a step-by-step breakdown of filling out your online application form for the UK standard visitor visa.

Tips to avoid common mistakes while filling out the form

  • Keep some of your original documents/ID proofs next to you while filling out the form to verify the spelling of your particulars against your ID proofs.
  • While answering yes or no questions regarding your legal, criminal and immigration history, ensure you don’t get confused.

It’s always preferred to contact a visa assistance service like Visa Guy to fill out your application form to ensure everything is filled out correctly.

How to schedule your appointment at the uk visa application centre.

  •   Give the online application credentials asked.
  •   Choose a feasible date and reserve your appointment.

Understanding the Biometrics appointment

The appointment at the Visa Application Centre for identity verification and biometric information is a crucial step in your visa application process. It is a mandatory process which you must directly appear for. Your fingerprints and photograph will be collected at the Visa Application Centre. Both your photograph and fingerprints of all 10 digits will be collected by a digital scanner, and your documents shall be verified to confirm your identity.

Preparing for Your Appointment

After booking your appointment, in the following days, ensure that you have collected all documents required for the appointment. You will need to take the following documents to the Visa Application Centre .

  • Printout of the Appointment Confirmation letter ( from VFS Global)
  • Valid Passport (with at least one blank page)
  • Printout of your checklist (from your completed visa application form)
  • Supporting Documents
  • Evidence of permission to be in UAE (if you are not a UAE national)
  • Evidence of your sponsor’s legal residence in the UK (if you are applying as a dependant)

5. Attend the Appointment

At the Visa Application Centre , biometric scans and document verification will occur. It is important to know about the procedures in the Visa Application Centre to avoid any last-minute confusion. Make sure that you reach your Visa Application Centre on time. Arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment time. Don’t forget to take your passport and other documents to the Visa Application Centre. For the biometric information collection, keep the following in your mind.

  • Your full face must be visible in the photo. Sunglasses, tinted glasses or head coverings are prohibited unless worn for religious or medical reasons.
  • Ensure your face is properly visible without any hair falling across the eye.
  • Ensure that your fingertips do not have any cuts or abrasions- this may affect the scan.
  • Children below the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult (18+)
  • You can use the Document Scanning Assistance Service at the Visa Application Centre to upload the supporting documents for the appointment.

Priority Visa Service- for Getting Faster Decision on your Application.

You might be able to get a faster decision on your visa application by opting for the priority visa service . Depending on the availability of the service in each Visa Application Centre, you can get a faster decision by paying a service charge for the same.

6. Waiting for the Visa Decision

The waiting begins once you have completed your appointment and provided your biometric information. The waiting time ends when you get a mail consisting of the visa decision. Meanwhile, you can track your application to get updates about its progress.

Usual Processing Times for UK visitor visas

Normally you should get your visa decision within 3 weeks after you attend the appointment at the Visa Application Centre. However, as mentioned earlier, you can make a faster decision using the priority services. The ‘Priority Visa’ option will give you a decision within 5-7 working days, whereas the ‘Super Priority Visa’ will give you a decision by the next working day.

Acceptance or Refusal of Application

The result of your visa application shall be conveyed to you by email or a letter. The letter or email will describe what to do next. If you do not receive any mail even after enough time, check the spam or junk folders of your email.

What to do if your application is approved.

If your Visa Application Centre has collected your passport, they will return it with a sticker (vignette) once your application is approved. If you keep your passport, you have to take your passport to the Visa Application Centre to get the vignette in the passport. The vignette will show the visa type you have been granted, the validity dates, and the visa conditions. If you encounter any error in your vignette, contact your Visa Application centre and get it corrected as soon as possible.

What to do if your application is denied.

If your Visa application is refused, you will receive an email or a letter explaining the denial. If the Visa Application Centre keeps your passport, it will be returned to you. The letter will mention if you can appeal the rejection decision.

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Preclearance is the strategic stationing of CBP personnel at designated foreign airports to inspect travelers prior to boarding U.S.-bound flights. With Preclearance, travelers then bypass CBP and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) inspections upon U.S. arrival and proceed directly to their connecting flight or destination.

Today, CBP has more than 600 officers and agriculture specialists stationed at 15 Preclearance locations in 6 countries: Dublin and Shannon in Ireland; Aruba; Bermuda; Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates; Nassau in the Bahamas; and Calgary, Toronto, Edmonton, Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Vancouver, Victoria, and Winnipeg in Canada.

In 2019, CBP personnel stationed abroad precleared 22 million travelers, representing over 16 percent of all commercial air travelers to the United States.

Travelling from the UK to Abu Dhabi; What do I need to do?

This guide has been superseded. Keep up-to-date with the latest Abu Dhabi COVID rules here

Whilst much of the COVID red tape that made traveling between the UK and Abu Dhabi has now been cut there are still a number of measures in place to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 in both the UK and the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

For both the UK and Abu Dhabi, quarantine may still be necessary if you have not been vaccinated and come from a country not on the current Green List for Abu Dhabi or Red List for UK. Presently, the UK and UAE are both on each others “green list” so there’s no hotel or self-quarantine required.

Assuming that you have been doubled vaccinated in the United Kingdom , these are the measures that you need to take to avoid ‘COVID-admin related stress’ during your visit to Abu Dhabi.

UK to Abu Dhabi: Before you fly…

Uk to abu dhabi: on the flight…, uk to abu dhabi: upon landing in abu dhabi…, what if my al hosn still doesn’t ‘go green’/work, what if i test positive for covid-19 during my trip to abu dhabi, what do i need to do before returning to the uk, arrival in the uk.

NB: if you are entering Abu Dhabi from a location other than the UK this information will not apply. Please pop over to this guide , with updated Abu Dhabi entry rules since 19 September 2021 applicable to all travellers.

There are a number of things that you need to do before leaving the UK in order to have a smooth trip to Abu Dhabi.

1. Register your vaccinations with the ICA

All travellers including children need to register for approval from the ICA (Federal Authority for Identity & Citizenship) before travelling. This includes registering your vaccinations to enable you to avoid quarantine and move freely during your trip to Abu Dhabi.

  • Up to a month before you fly register your vaccinations with the ICA. Whilst there is an App for this, many people in the UK have found that the app simply doesn’t work for them so it’s advisable to use the ICA website .
  • When you enter your contact details make sure that you use a number that can receive text messages in the UAE. If you are visiting family or friends it may be advisable to use their UAE number. If you do use a UK mobile number remember to use the country code ‘+44’ (0044) at the start of your number (don’t forget to remove the first ‘0’ if your actual number).
  • Remember to make a note of your username and password as you may need to access tour ICA account whilst traveling.
  • You will be emailed a QR code by the ICA which you must print and keep with your travel documents and/or save somewhere on your phone. We recommend doing both. A good idea is to make a separate file in your photos labeled ‘Travel Documents’ where you can keep your scans/screenshots of all of the documents relating to your trip.

2. Get a PCR Test

In order to fly into Abu Dhabi on any airline it is necessary to get a UK Government approved PCR test up and ‘Fit to Fly’ certificate up to 48 hours before boarding your flight. Children under the age of 12 do not need to be tested.

3. Download the Al Hosn App

It won’t work while you’re in the UK but it’s handy to have the Al Hosn App already on your phone before you enter Abu Dhabi. You will need it, or proof of your vaccination plus a negative PCR test result to enter tourist attractions, restaurants, malls, beach clubs …Well just about everywhere really!

You can learn more about how the Alhosn App and “Green Pass” work once you’re in Abu Dhabi over here.

Wear your mask on the plane.

If you are traveling with Etihad , it is mandatory to wear your face mask at all times on the plane unless you are eating or drinking.

1. Pass Immigration

After disembarking from the plane you should head towards to immigration desk, here you may be asked for your ICA QR code and proof of vaccination along with your passport.

Your passport will be stamped and you should receive a unified identification number, known as a UID – although this may only be available to you via the ICA website or app.

2. Take your arrival PCR Test

After landing and clearing immigration you will be directed to the PCR testing tent. All arrivals over the age of 12 years must take a COVID-19 PCR test when they land in Abu Dhabi.

At the desk you must supply your ICA UID as well as your telephone number – this number should match the one on your ICA registration.

It is crucial that you supply your number with the correct country code (in the case of the UK ‘ +44’ or ‘0044 ’) in order for you to receive your negative test result and sign into the Al Hosn App.

It is handy to have your full name, email address and telephone number including the country code typed or printed on a card to give to the nurse/administrator in order to make sure that no errors are made.

Note that we have received reports since going to print that some passengers are being tested as soon as they disembark from the plane rather than once they pass immigration.

3. What do I do after taking the arrival PCR test?

After taking the test you are free to leave the airport. You should receive your test result within 24 hours via text message and should be able to sign into the Al Hosn App around the same time that you receive the message.

  • Fabulous Abu Dhabi Weather & Events in February 2024
  • Understanding Prayer Time in Abu Dhabi as a Visitor
  • Eid Al Adha Public Holiday & Fireworks in Abu Dhabi June 2024

Note that there is sometimes a time lag between getting your result and Al Hosn being updated. You do not need to quarantine while you wait for your result but may be refused access to public places.

4. I have my negative PCR test result, what now?

If everything goes to plan you will be able to login to your Al Hosn application (using your UID and an OTP sent to your phone) and the screen will turn green. No further action needs to be taken until day 6 when you must take another PCR test .

This test can be taken at any centre offering PCR testing. Many shopping malls including Yas Mall and the Galleria have testing centres specifically for this purpose. We would recommend going to one of the bigger testing centres as they are more accustomed to dealing with tourists with ‘unusual’ paperwork.

PCR tests throughout the Emirate have a standardised fee of 50 AED (around £10) and results usually come back within 8-24 hours.

For a full list of private PCR test providers click here . Alternatively you can visit any SEHA drive through tent or clinic throughout the city.

5. What if something goes wrong with my test result?

If you don’t receive your arrival test result within 24 hours, it is advisable to go to another testing centre and pay AED 50 to do another test.

If you are in a hurry to get a negative PCR result, one option is to pay for a rapid test at the Biogenix lab in Masdar City. Here you can pay AED 350 and receive a result within 2 hours. You will need your UID and passport and will need to supply your telephone number in order to receive your result.

Again make sure that you supply the same number that is on your ICA registration and include your country code; a printed card with your name and contact details would be handy here too! Note that you do not need to make an appointment.

There are other ways of solving problems with the Al Hosn App but this is by far the simplest. If you would rather not pay for an additional test you should contact either Pure Health (the airport testing provider) on 04 447 3338 or the ICA on 600 522222 who may be able to help you.

If you still cannot get Al Hosn to work even after a second PCR test and time consuming calls to the relevant authorities, don’t panic. You will still be able to access public places but will need to show proof of vaccination – a screenshot of your vaccination record from the NHS app with a QR code will work along with a screenshot of your ICA approval; and proof of a negative PCR test – for this you can use a text message or email showing that your latest test result was negative. Having a green Al Hosn app definitely makes life easier but if it doesn’t ‘go green’ it shouldn’t completely spoil your trip.

If you test positive for COVID-19 in Abu Dhabi, you are considered a positive case after a second test to rule out a false negative has been carried out. This is irrespective of whether or not you have symptoms.

If you receive a positive result you should contact ISTIJABA on 800 1717 who will advise you of the correct action to take.

Note that positive cases will need to quarantine for 10 days and wear a tracking watch.

All costs for medical assistance and quarantine are at the expense of the individual and we therefore recommend purchasing appropriate travel insurance before your trip.

There are a number of things that you need to do before you will be allowed to board your plane back to the UK, not least the completion and submission of your passenger locator form ( which you can find here ), as well as ensuring you have a valid negative PCR test result.

1. Take a PCR Test

Do a PCR test within 48 hours of embarking on your flight if you are flying with Etihad – this is applicable to all passengers over the age of 12. This can be done at any Abu Dhabi testing centre.

If you are flying back to the UK seven or eight days after landing you may be able to time your mandatory day 6 test to coincide with your departure time.

2. Book a Day 2 (after arrival into the UK) PCR or Lateral Flow test and complete your Passenger Locator Form

Your Passenger Locator Form can be submitted any time in the 48 hours before your flight arrives in the UK. On this form you will need to supply details about where you have been staying.

Whilst Abu Dhabi is made up of a number of islands, you do not need to name these islands, for example, ‘Al Reem’ or ‘Al Muneera’, in the ‘Islands visited’ section. You will, however, need to supply details of the day 2 testing package that you have booked back in the UK.

3. What do I do if I have a problem with my PLF?

The most frequently reported problem with the PLF is rejection of the PCR/lateral flow test kit booking reference number. If the form does not accept your booking reference number you should contact the company that you booked your test through.

If this is not possible, or you do not receive a response 24 hours before your flight is due to depart, it is advisible to book another test online using a different test provider just so that you have a code that works on the form – it might seem like a waste of money but you will not be allowed to embark on a flight to the UK unless the PLF has been completed and submitted.

4. Try to print your documents

Whilst it may seem more eco-friendly to have everything on your phone (and we do advise that you have everything saved as a screenshot and stored in a separate easily accessible file on your device), we do recommend printing out your PCR test result and PLF so that you have physical copies in your hand to show check-in staff at the airport.

This will make check-in easier as you won’t be scrolling through your phone trying to find documents and have a hard copy in case your phone battery ‘dies’. Most hotels will be happy to print out your travel documents, alternatively there are printing shops in a number of the malls around the city.

5. Sign up for verified to fly

You can sign up for Etihad’s verified to fly scheme. In theory you can submit your paperwork online to beat the queues at the airport.

In practice, you may not receive your verified status until after your flight has departed or find that the ‘verified to fly’ queue at the airport is longer than the queues at the regular check-in counters.

6. Check in online

You can check-in online as normal or choose to check-in at the airport. If you choose to check-in online you will still need to show your documents at the check-in desk unless you have received your ‘verified to fly’ status.

7. At Abu Dhabi airport

Masks should be worn at all times within Abu Dhabi International Airport unless you are eating or drinking. Social distancing should be maintained wherever possible. You will need to show your passport, proof of a negative PCR test result (received within the last 48 hours) and your UK PLF to be allowed to check-in for your flight. You may be asked to show your PLF again when you reach the gate.

You will be asked to present your PLF along with your passport for inspection at immigration. Quarantine is not necessary for fully vaccinated passengers returning from Abu Dhabi but you do need to take a COVID test on your second day after arriving into the UK (the date of arrival is classed as day 0).

This test can either be a PCR or lateral flow test but as outlined above, this test needs to be booked before you can get on your return flight to the UK.

Your day 2 COVID-19 test

You can choose to visit a healthcare provider or do a home COVID test. Home tests can be either lateral flow or PCR but must be booked prior to your return to the UK. All government approved test kits come with instructions on how to perform the test and receive your results.

Note that children under 5 do not need to do a day 2 test but children aged 5 and over do. If you test positive you will need to self-isolate at home for 10 days. For more details click here .

And that’s it…

We hope that this has made the prospect of travelling to Abu Dhabi less daunting and that you will have a safe and COVID-stress free trip.

Stake raises $14M to bring its fractional property investment platform to Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi

The UAE is facing a good problem: Its real estate market is booming, and there is no shortage of buyers. Dubai rents in 2024 jumped 23% year-on-year back up to pre-pandemic levels, and sales are up 18%, according to Deloitte , and this upward trend is set to continue for the coming years .

No doubt some of that demand is spilling over to neighboring Abu Dhabi, which is likely why the city's sovereign wealth fund, Mubadala Investment Company, recently participated in a $14 million Series A round raised by Dubai-based Stake , which is bringing its fractional property investment platform to the UAE capital next year.

The Series A was led by Middle East Venture Partners with participation from Aramco's Wa'ed Ventures and private investment platform Republic.

Founded by Manar Mahmassani, Rami Tabbara and Ricardo Brizido in 2020, Stake aims to use the new cash to fuel its international plans — the majority of the money will be used to enter Saudi Arabia in the next few months and to expand to Abu Dhabi next year. Some of the money will also be used to offer more options in Dubai, like investing in commercial real estate. The startup has raised a total of $26 million to date .

For Abu Dhabi, backing companies like Stake, which make it easier for people to participate in the real estate market by buying a share of a given property, makes sense for boosting investment in its real estate market. The Emirate has burgeoned over the years into a residential hub for people who work in Dubai but find living in that city too costly, and it also ties in nicely with Abu Dhabi's long-term plan to diversify its revenue streams away from oil and gas production.

Stake's process is simple for property investors. It lets you buy a share in a property that it manages on behalf of shareholders and lets you earn a slice from the monthly rentals. If the property gets sold, the investors get a share of the profit as well. Stake also lets investors sell their stake in a secondary market called Exit Windows that it opens every six months.

Currently, Stake has more than 200 properties under management with investors from across the globe. The UAE is home to most of its customers, and people from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait form the bulk of its international customer base. About 12% of its customers are from the U.S., Canada and the U.K.

Stake has been planning to expand beyond Dubai for a while now — it had originally announced its entry into Saudi Arabia and Egypt in 2022, but deferred those plans citing economic volatility. Earlier this year, the company partnered with U.S.-based private investment platform Republic to attract more overseas investors.

And to entice more international investors, the startup, in partnership with the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), offers investors who commit at least AED 2 million (~$545,000) a golden visa (a 10-year renewable residency visa) in Dubai. That program was introduced in 2019 to attract foreign investment into the region, and initiatives like this have reportedly helped foreign nationals drive real estate investments in the region.

The company says it returns roughly 4%-7% to its customers through rental income. Tabbara, who serves as co-CEO with Mahmassani, told TechCrunch that the company has paid $4.5 million worth of rental income to its customers so far. He added that the average investment in properties comes to $1,500, and on average, customers invest a total of $5,600 through the platform.

Entering Saudi Arabia

Stake claims it has surpassed Dubai-based fractional property investment platforms like Smartcrowd , but it will be starting afresh in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia already has companies like Awaed and Aseel, which let customers invest in properties through funds. Historically, only Saudi nationals have been able to have freehold ownership of properties in the country. Property investment companies therefore set up special purpose vehicles through which they let investors buy real estate.

"Saudi Arabia has properties that are recently completed and under development that are worth billions. We are going to use [our] experience to offer a similar unified product for investment in Saudi Arabia within the same app," Mahmassani said.

Mahmassani noted that Stake aims to break even in Dubai by the end of this year and be profitable by next year. The startup is also exploring partnerships to let people from the Middle East invest in properties in countries like the U.S.
