How to check in for flights on American Airlines

Zach Griff

It's almost time for your flight, and there's just one thing left to do before heading for airport security. And that's packing check in. This is the process that creates your boarding pass and allows you to check your bags at the airport .

trip check in

You can do this formality online or at the airport, though many will prefer the convenience of the former. Either way, there are some rules to understand, so let's dive deep into checking in for an American Airlines flight .

For more travel tips and news delivered to your inbox, sign up for TPG's daily email newsletter!

How to check in online for American Airlines flights

You can check in for AA flights on the airline's website or through the mobile app. The experience is very similar, though the benefit of the mobile app is that you can generate a digital boarding pass within your mobile wallet.

trip check in

After locating your reservation using your six-digit confirmation number, you'll be prompted to check in at the top left corner of the reservation page.

trip check in

Pressing that button will take you through the check-in process. You'll then need to agree to the hazardous materials policy. Pressing continue will bring you to the Trip Options page, where you can purchase additional miles for your trip ( don't do it; it's a bad deal ).

trip check in

You'll then be brought to the seat map to select or modify your seat for your flight(s).

After you select your seats, you'll be checked in!

You then have the option of printing your boarding passes now, emailing a mobile boarding pass to your phone or saving a PDF of your boarding pass.

Rules for American Airlines flight check-in

You can check in online or using the mobile app starting 24 hours before and up to 45 minutes before departure of the first flight in your itinerary. This applies even if you have a connecting flight that's more than a day away. Note that online and app check-in closes an hour and a half before departure for international flights.

If you're planning to check bags at the airport , you need to have the bags checked at least 45 minutes prior to domestic flights and 60 minutes prior to international flights. There are some airports with exceptions to this rule, which you can find on AA's website .

Related: How to avoid checked baggage fees on major domestic airlines

Furthermore, there are some airports that won't accept checked bags more than four hours before scheduled departure. This includes:

  • Denver (DEN)
  • Fort Lauderdale (FLL)
  • Las Vegas (LAS)
  • Orlando (MCO)
  • Portland, Oregon (PDX)
  • Salt Lake City (SLC)
  • Seattle (SEA)

If the first flight of your itinerary is operating by an American Airlines partner , you're going to check in with that airline directly, and not on AA's website.

Tips and tricks to checking in for American Airlines flights

There are some things to consider when you check in for your flight. Make sure you have your confirmation number handy, especially if you're going to check in at the airport. The kiosks default to ask for that code, so this can save time.

I personally prefer to use mobile boarding passes to save paper and have one less thing to worry about misplacing. That said, you need to be sure you have your phone's battery charged for the entire trip, otherwise you'll be forced to get a physical boarding pass.

trip check in

Another tip about mobile boarding passes is to screenshot it after it gets created. I often find that retrieving the mobile boarding pass can be confusing when you're under pressure, so be sure to screenshot it for easy access.

Lastly, if you get an error checking in online, fear not. You may be on a military fare, have a pet or are traveling with an unaccompanied minor. Or you may be subject to the dreaded SSSS , which will be printed on your boarding pass at the airport.

Bottom line

Checking in for your American Airlines flight is exciting. That means it's almost time to take to the skies. But, there are some tips and tricks to know and some rules to follow to make it an efficient process.

Armed with this guide, you'll be ready to head to the airport in no time.

Cheap Flights

Find Cheap Flight Deals

Wonderful things are happening

How to Book Cheap Flights?

  • Fly during the working week Opting to take your flight during the working week can save you money. Flights departing over this period – especially Tuesdays and Wednesdays – are cheaper, mainly because these days are less popular to travel on.
  • Have a look at airline websites Many airline websites have made it simpler to identify the inexpensive days to fly by displaying a "calendar view" booking system. This system allows you to scan prices ranging across the week that you are searching.
  • Consider flights with less-popular departure times You may also get a bargain flight if you're willing to fly at an early hour. It may well be less expensive to fly at 6 am than at later times due to that time spot being less popular. The only problem you could face is getting to the airport at this time; make sure that public transport is running if you can't take a taxi or get a lift to the airport.
  • Find a better price on the Trip.com app This may sound like I'm stating the obvious, but you'd be surprised at the number of people who settle for a price without first shopping around and doing some research. We suggest you have a look for bargains on the Trip.com app. The Trip.com Save & Fly browser extension is a big help when learning how to get cheap flight tickets. While you're looking for airline tickets online, the extension notifies you of whether the exact same flight is available on Trip.com at a better price. It's completely free to install and use, and it takes some of the pressure off booking your tickets.
  • Book early instead of waiting until the last minute Don't get fooled into thinking that last-minute deals are necessarily the best option for cheap flight tickets because they seldom are. The smart move is to book early, even as far as a year in advance if that is possible for the flight you require. Flight tickets have a tendency to be cheaper when they are first released – which is normally about a year before the flight – so have a look online as soon as the flights you want are available. This is particularly true if you are planning to travel during school holidays or to a destination where a famous event is taking place. These prices will increase rapidly, so book before the masses do. The price of a flight may drop again before re-climbing in the last few days before the flight takes off but they also may not. It's not worth the risk of waiting for a drop in prices only to be faced with higher prices for leaving it until the last minute. You also run the risk that the tickets will become sold out before you book yours, especially if it's a popular flight. If you're willing to be flexible, which is really the name of the game for cheap flight tickets, then have a look at a flight search engine as it may post flight tickets which get lower in price as the flight time approaches.
  • Use a credit card in a wiser way There are a lot of advantages to paying for a flight with a credit card. One advantage is that you are protected when you make bigger purchases. For example, if you spend more than $100 on a flight, you will be covered for a refund if the airline or travel company goes out of business. This will not necessarily be the case if you pay with a debit card so check first. Credit cards are also more useful for spending in a foreign country and give you better exchange rates than you would get with your debit card. Certain credit cards will offer you air miles for each sum of money spent, thus saving you a bit more on your flight tickets. They may also give you a certain amount of cashback on the purchase of your flight ticket.
  • Choose flights with a connection Booking a flight with a connection is nearly always a cheaper option, especially on longer-haul flights. The best thing to do is to uncheck the "non-stop only" option on your flight booking website's search engine, and have a look to see if the flights shown are any cheaper. However, there is a degree of risk involved in this method of getting cheap air tickets. If one of your earlier flights is delayed, this could mean that you miss a later connecting flight.
  • Book package holidays which may offer cheap flight tickets If you book a package holiday, you are likely to get discounts on flights as well as accommodation. This is because travel companies book tickets in such large volumes that they get huge discounts. It is sometimes possible to get a whole holiday for less than the price of a regular flight.
  • Be aware of hidden costs of cheap flights Be aware that cheap flight tickets with budget airlines can be deceptive. Very often there can be hidden costs, so check for air taxes, baggage fees, or seat selection costs before you buy. Airlines can also add travel insurance and other features on automatically without checking to see if you want them first. Travel light if it's possible. Carry-on baggage is usually free, but be sure to check the regulations on weight limitations first.

These 9 underrated destinations within 2 hours of Columbia are good for day, weekend trips

trip check in

When thinking about summer vacation, your mind might instinctively conjure up sandy, salty beaches or snow-capped mountain tops, as these destinations are out of reach in the Midwest. However, if you're looking to save a bit of money this summer or are just interested in exploring more of what makes the middle of the country so special, you don't have to travel far for an escape.

WorldAtlas, an online geography and travel resource, often posts lists of underrated and picturesque destinations in Missouri and its regions, such as the Ozarks . The Tribune reviewed the various lists and has compiled places to visit for a day trip or over a weekend.

While WorldAtlas already notes Columbia is one if its six most underrated towns in Missouri , all referenced destinations are outside of the city, though some are close by. WorldAtlas considers Columbia a hidden gem for recreation lovers due to Rock Bridge Memorial State Park as well as cave structures in the park like Devil's Icebox.

Rocheport, Boonville and Arrow Rock

Distances from Columbia: 20 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes, respectively

WorldAtlas notes Rocheport as one of seven most underrated towns to visit in 2024 and among the seven most picturesque towns in Missouri . It continues to be a hub for those biking on the Katy 240-mile Katy Trail, including along the Missouri River. The downtown historic district is great for viewing 1830s era homes and for those wanting to "delve deeper into nature" there is the Diana Bend Conservation Area nearby.

Boonville is considered one of Missouri's six most underrated towns, among the six most overlooked towns and seven most picturesque Missouri towns by WorldAtlas. The town has many historic claims to fame dating back to the U.S. Civil War that history buffs can dig into. There also is the vibrant downtown area, several parks, blufftop views of the Missouri River and the Isle of Capri Casino for those seeking a gambling flutter.

Arrow Rock, according to WorldAtlas, is among Missouri's most picturesque towns. Its connections to history, including the explorations of Lewis and Clark, make Arrow Rock a good day trip destination.

"The compact downtown is ideal for walking tours and contains several cute shops, restaurants, and bed and breakfasts, as well as museums focused on Black history, the printing business and more," WorldAtlas notes.

There also is Arrow Rock Lyceum Theater, which opens its 2024 season June 7 with "42nd Street." Other shows in 2024 are "Jimmy Buffet's Escape to Margaritaville, "Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," Noises Off, "Ken Ludwig's Moriarty: A New Sherlock Holmes Adventure," "Million Dollar Quartet" and the 10th anniversary presentation of "Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol."

Distance from Columbia: roughly 50 minutes.

Considered among Missouri's seven most underrated towns to visit in 2024 by WorldAtlas, Westphalia is a small Osage County town influenced by its early German settlers. The community has a European feel with both English and German street signs, per WorldAtlas. The town is good for both history buffs and outdoor enthusiasts thanks to its local museum and the Painted Rock Conservation Area adjacent to the Osage River.

Distance from Columbia: roughly 90 minutes

When people visit the Lake of the Ozarks, they may overlook Camdenton, at least according to WorldAtlas. Camdenton still is adjacent to the lake and has plenty of activities available, such as the Adrenaline Zipline, the nearby Ha Ha Tonka State Park and the outdoor Ozark Amphitheater among other attractions, festivals and more.

St. Charles

Distance from Columbia: roughly 90 minutes.

Once the state capitol before Jefferson City was selected, WorldAtlas considers St. Charles an underrated city . Claims to fame include the Lewis and Clark Boat House and Nature Center and the downtown Main Street can supply all your shopping and souvenir needs. Supernatural enthusiasts can take in a ghost tour including sights like the 1800s Lost Graveyard, WorldAtlas notes.

Distance from Columbia: approximately 1 hour 45 minutes.

There probably is not anyone in Missouri who does not know that Mark Twain, also known as Samuel Clemens, hailed from Hannibal, which WorldAtlas says is one of the state's underrated towns to visit in 2024. You can learn Twain's history at the Boyhood Home and Museum Properties, hop on a riverboat cruise, take part in a ghost tour or take a hike in the Sodalis Nature Preserve.

Distance from Columbia: about 2 hours.

Hermann isn't the only wine-centric part of the state. St. James, located in Phelps County and among WorldAtlas' six most underrated Missouri towns, is home to the award-winning St. James Winery. Another favorite in the region is Maramec Spring Park, which boasts opportunities for fishing, hiking, camping and more.

Distance from Columbia: roughly 2 hours.

Just about every corner of this overlooked town along the historic Route 66 is Instagram-worthy, says WorldAtlas. The annual Crawford County Fair in July is a highlight. The Wagon Wheel Motel is Route 66's oldest still operating motel located in Cuba. Many public murals and other locations for local food and memorabilia are available.

Clarksville

Looking for a chance to see bald eagles in one of Missouri's most picturesque towns? Then visit Clarksville, roughly an hour north of St. Louis along the Mississippi River in Pike County, says WorldAtlas. The compact town of 400 has a variety of historic buildings, antique stores and artisan craft shops. Bald eagles can be spotted in the town's Riverfront Park.

Distance from Columbia: slightly more than 2 hours.

Parkville, minutes from downtown Kansas City in Platte County, is often overlooked and underrated, and is among the most picturesque towns in the state, WorldAtlas says. The small university town also is among recommended places to visit in 2024. There are a string of parks along the Missouri River, old architecture to view and plenty of trails. On the way to Parkville, it might also be good to make a pit stop in Blue Springs, another underrated Missouri city, that features Lake Jacomo, Blue Springs Lake, Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area and shopping along Coronado Drive at Adams Dairy Parkway.

President Joe Biden welcomed the Kansas City Chiefs back to the White House in Washington, D.C., on Friday, May 31.

The franchise arrived in style for the second consecutive year at the nation’s capitol, celebrating their latest Lombardi trophy. The Chiefs group consisting of players, coaches and front office personnel were busy on social media ahead of the ceremony taking in the unique experience.

It isn’t often that a team visits the president for two years in a row, and while Kansas City’s ultimate goal is to make a third trip to D.C. in 2025, the team’s players seemed exceptionally humbled to be in Biden’s presence.

There was plenty of posing in front of historic landmarks and fun in the press room as the team turned the moment into an exciting field trip.

1 dead, 2 injured in wrong-way crash on East Washington Avenue, police say

Chris rickert | wisconsin state journal.

  • May 29, 2024

Tesla is recalling nearly all vehicles sold in the U.S., more than 2 million, to fix a defective system that’s supposed to ensure drivers are paying attention when using Autopilot. Documents posted Wednesday by U.S. safety regulators say the update will increase warnings and alerts to driver…

One person died and two were injured in a crash early Tuesday afternoon on East Washington Avenue, Madison police said.

Police said a car was going the wrong way in the 900 block of East Washington just after noon when it hit an SUV and both slid into a legally parked, unoccupied vehicle.

The crash shut down the route's outbound lanes between South Livingston and South Brearly streets for about two hours, police said.

The driver of the vehicle driving the wrong way may have experienced a medical event, Chief Shon Barnes said in his blog Wednesday morning.

[Correction: An earlier version of this story had the wrong day for the crash.]

Memorial Day road trip safety tips

Stay safe while traveling.

The sun is shining, the days are getting longer, and summer feels like it is just around the corner. Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of the season, with many families hitting the road for exciting getaways. Whether you're heading to the beach, the mountains, or a beloved family reunion spot, a road trip is a fantastic way to create lasting memories.

However, with increased traffic on the roads comes a greater emphasis on safety. In this article, Cheap Insurance will equip you with essential Memorial Day road trip safety tips to ensure a smooth, enjoyable, and most importantly, safe journey for you and your loved ones. Buckle up, and let's get ready for a fantastic and accident-free adventure!

Planning Your Safe Journey

Before the engine purrs and the adventure begins, a little preparation can go a long way in ensuring a stress-free and safe Memorial Day road trip. Here's how you can set the stage for a smooth journey:

Get Your Car Road Trip Ready: Just like packing your bags, your car needs to be packed for the adventure too. Schedule a pre-trip check-up to ensure your car is in tip-top shape. This includes topping off fluids, inspecting tires for wear and proper inflation, and making sure your battery is healthy enough to handle the extra demands. Don't forget to pack an emergency car kit with essentials like jumper cables, a flashlight, and a first-aid kit for unexpected situations.

Map Your Route and Embrace Flexibility: Technology is your friend. Utilize navigation apps to plan your route, keeping in mind traffic patterns and potential delays common during holiday weekends. Consider alternative routes in case of unforeseen closures or congestion. Staying informed about weather forecasts can also help you avoid getting caught in a storm.  Remember, the goal is to arrive safely, so embrace a flexible mindset and be prepared to adjust your itinerary if needed.

Pack Smart for Safety and Comfort: Packing for a road trip requires striking a balance between essentials and entertainment. Pack a well-stocked first-aid kit, sunscreen, and plenty of water to stay prepared for anything. When it comes to entertainment, choose options that minimize driver distraction. Download audiobooks or podcasts for passengers to enjoy. Remember, a safe and happy driver makes for a happy and safe journey for everyone.

Be a Safe and Courteous Driver

Memorial Day weekend means more cars on the road, so buckle up and put on your "courteous driver" hat. Here are some key practices to ensure everyone gets to their destination safely and enjoys the shared journey:

Buckle Up, Everyone: This one seems obvious, but it's worth repeating. Seatbelts are your first line of defense in a crash, so make sure everyone in the car is buckled up –  every single ride, every single time.

Become a Master of Defensive Driving: Defensive driving is all about anticipating what other drivers might do and reacting accordingly. Maintain a safe following distance –  the two-second rule is a good guideline – and avoid distractions like using your phone or eating while driving.  Stay focused on the road, obey traffic laws and speed limits, and be extra cautious around motorcycles and bicycles.

Patience is a Virtue: With increased traffic comes congestion, especially on holiday weekends. Remember, getting frustrated won't make the traffic disappear. Be patient, avoid aggressive driving maneuvers, and allow extra time for your trip. Take breaks to stretch your legs and stay refreshed to maintain focus behind the wheel. Sharing the road with courtesy and patience goes a long way in creating a safer and more enjoyable experience for everyone.

Memorial Day Road Trip Car Insurance Tips

A little peace of mind goes a long way in ensuring a truly enjoyable Memorial Day road trip.  Let's explore some car insurance tips to make sure you're covered in case of the unexpected:

Know Your Coverage: Before you hit the road, take a moment to review your existing car insurance policy. Understand your liability coverage limits –  both bodily injury and property damage. These determine the amount your insurance company will pay for injuries or damages to others in an accident you cause. Underinsured and uninsured motorist coverage can offer additional protections from accidents caused by another driver.

Consider Additional Coverage Options: Depending on your comfort level and the distance you're traveling, you might want to consider adding some extra protections to your existing policy. Roadside assistance can be a lifesaver if you experience a flat tire or encounter car trouble in a remote location. Your car insurance company may offer roadside assistance coverage that can be added to your policy, or you can explore options for a standalone roadside assistance plan.

Renting a Car? Understand Your Options: Rental car companies offer various insurance options, and it's crucial to understand what each covers before you finalize your rental agreement. In some cases, your existing car insurance policy might extend coverage to rental vehicles . Familiarize yourself with these details beforehand to avoid any surprises later.

Fun Stops and Activities Along the Way

While a safe and well-planned journey is crucial, there's also room for some spontaneous fun. Here are a few ideas to consider for interesting roadside stops and activities that can add some extra sparkle to your Memorial Day road trip:

National Parks and Monuments: The United States boasts a stunning array of national parks and monuments, many accessible by highway. Take a detour to explore a scenic overlook, hike a short trail, or learn about the region's history at a visitor center. A key point – some national parks and monuments require advance reservations.

Quirky Roadside Attractions: Keep your eyes peeled for those offbeat roadside attractions that dot the American landscape. From the world's largest ball of twine to a giant chair, these quirky stops offer a chance to stretch your legs, capture some silly photos, and create lasting memories.

Local Festivals and Events: Many towns and communities host festivals or events over Memorial Day weekend. Do a quick online search to see if there's a farmers market, a music festival, or a local parade happening along your route. Immersing yourselves in the local culture can be a fun and enriching way to break up the drive.

State Parks and Recreation Areas: Don't underestimate the beauty and fun to be found in state parks and recreation areas. These often offer opportunities for swimming, picnicking, fishing, or exploring nature trails – all at a budget-friendly price. As with national parks, some of these state parks and recreation areas may require reservations.

Create the Perfect Road Trip Soundtrack: Road trips and music go hand-in-hand. Here's a fun way to keep everyone entertained: Have each person create a playlist to share, or take turns being the DJ. For an even wider music selection, consider using satellite radio or streaming services to discover new tunes and create the perfect soundtrack for your adventure.

These are just a few ideas to spark your creativity. With a little planning and some open-mindedness, you can turn your Memorial Day road trip into an unforgettable adventure filled with unexpected discoveries and lasting memories.

Hitting the Road with Confidence

By following these essential Memorial Day road trip safety tips, you've taken a significant step toward a smooth, enjoyable, and most importantly, safe journey. A little planning, defensive driving practices, and awareness of your surroundings go a long way. With your car prepped, your route mapped, and your insurance coverage  understood, you're all set to create lasting memories with your loved ones.

So fasten your seat belts, crank up the tunes – safely, of course – and get ready to experience the adventure that awaits. Here's to a happy, safe, and unforgettable Memorial Day road trip.
