You booked my 7 year old son to sit on his own without his mum and dad in s separate row between two unfriendly adult strangers. The plane was disgusting and dirty, aisles and everywhere sticky. The lounge waiting area was filthy carpet and had insufficient seats so we had to sit on it to wait for 35 minutes and my 7 year old sone played on this filthy lounge carpet. The outside of the plane appeared clean. The pilot was helpful with the route and what to expect weather etc.

Comfort isn’t a word one uses on economy airlines! Boarding was okay, delayed but okay, the flight was good, quick and time was made up.

With stairs on a rainy tarmac, EasyJet flights are ok for younger travelers with backpack only. Seniors with mobility issues find it challenging 😰. However, the crew and disability assistance folks at both ends eased that discomfort as much as possible for their various roles. Kudos to airport and EasyJet employees for their kind service.

The flight boarded a little late but made up the time in flight - much appreciated. The staff were efficient and fairly friendly One of the toilets wasn’t working - having only one functioning toilet for a flight of hundreds isn’t really acceptable. Flying economy is like being packed into a sardine can.

The BA team at Sky Harbor is deplorable, full of unnecessary attitude and poor communication. It seems like every member of the team was looking at another to solve the problem, instead of taking agency to do so themselves. I saw no less than 6 altercations with the same gate agent where he threatened to revoke the passengers boarding pass for asking a wildly reasonable question, something as simple as where the cue to board was. I’ve complained to BA before but it seems this isn’t an issue for them, which is very disappointing

It was very good. We got a late start by about an hour and a half. However I worked rather have that than crash. It was purely mechanical. They had our tickets ready when we came off the plane in London for the next leg. The only mishap was when we got to Lisbon my husbands luggage made or bit mine didn't. All was not lost because I did finally get it 2 days later. I was really pleased that they c made the effort.

The sad case is that BA is often late. I missed my connection outbound and then was rebooked in another biz class seat some 10 hours later. I opted to change to economy (no compensation refunded of course) that was only 5 hours later. On the return journey, once again changing planes was very challenging. This time we landed only a little bit late, but deplaning took a long time so the connection was very much in doubt. Some serious running and sweat later, I managed to make the connection but my luggage did not. No messages about the missing luggage, so I had to wait until the entire bag return process was over before seeking out an agent. There was only one and well over 50 passengers waiting to speaking with her. She was quite pleasant, but it took 1 hour and 45 minutes from touchdown to leaving the airport.

Influences from its European neighbors and a mosaic of cultures – including its complex historical links to merchant trade, imperialism and immigration – plus a focus on sustainability all enrich the Netherland’s diverse food scene.

Where to try it: Contemporary showcases include Het Arsenaal in an old monastery in Hanseatic Doesburg (with its own brewery), intimate Tres in Rotterdam, factory-set Novo and inspired Beluga Loves You in Maastricht, and hyperlocal Triptyque in Den Haag and Neder in Alkmaar, just for starters. At Amsterdam’s De Kas , dine on ingredients grown in its surrounding century-old glasshouses and gardens. Utrecht’s Kasvio (whose mantra is “cooking as storytelling”), and Nijmegen’s double-Michelin-starred De Nieuwe Winkel (“botanical gastronomy”) are entirely vegan.

Dine on Dutch comfort dishes

Chilly winter weather is held at bay by warming Dutch comfort dishes like stamppot (potatoes mashed with vegetables and topped with sausages), hutspot (“hotchpotch” of potatoes, carrots, onions and braised meat), erwtensoep (split-pea soup with bacon or smoked sausage and thick rye bread) and boerenkool met worst (mashed potatoes with kale and smoked sausage). Desserts include appeltaart (tall apple pie made from brown-sugar shortcrust pastry filled with cinnamon apples), spekkoek (layered spice cake), and hangop (thick, creamy strained yoghurt with fruit compote).

Where to try it: Wonderful Dutch classics are dished up at Amsterdam stalwart Hap Hmm . At Spijshuis de Dis in Delft, end your meal with semolina pudding with brandied raisins or apricots, served in a wooden clog.

Vegetarians and vegans

The Netherlands is a pioneer of plant-based cuisine, and a quarter of main meals eaten in the country are vegetarian . Vegetarians and vegans will find a multitude of options at all price points, from market-stall snacks through to high-end gourmet experiences.

Numerous cafes and restaurants are exclusively vegetarian or completely vegan, and those that aren’t usually have vegetarian (and often vegan) dishes or set menus available.

Share a rijsttafel Indonesian banquet

Spices are prevalent in the Netherlands, a legacy of the Dutch colonization of Indonesia. A dining highlight is a rijsttafel (“rice table”), an elaborate Indonesian feast of a dozen or so tiny dishes such as pork satay, braised beef and ribs, served with white rice. Other popular dishes at Indonesian restaurants include nasi goreng (spiced fried rice with onion, pork and shrimp and spices, topped with egg) and bami goreng (with noodles rather than rice). Mild is usually the default setting to cater to European palates but restaurants will fire up the heat if you ask (you’ve been warned!).

Where to try it: Haarlem’s Café Samabe , Utrecht’s Djakarta and Amsterdam’s Restaurant Blauw are excellent places for Indonesian cuisine.

Scoop up Surinamese roti

Caribbean-style Surinamese cuisine, from the tropical South American country of Suriname, formerly colonized by the Dutch, prominently features chicken, lamb or beef curries; pom is a festive chicken and root-vegetable casserole. Roti, soft savory pancake-style flatbread wraps with curried meat or vegetables such as garter beans, are filling and delicious.

Where to try it: Amsterdam’s Tokoman makes outstanding roti and Surinamese sandwiches, washed down with cold coconut water. In Rotterdam, try Surinamese dishes at Brasserie Timmerhuis , and in ‘s-Hertogenbosch (Den Bosch), head for the cozy warmth of Tante Wonnie , cooking family recipes to a soundtrack of Surinamese kaseko .

Soak up frothy beers with borrelhapjes (bar snacks)

Bier (beer) is more popular than ever in the Netherlands, from icons like 1615-founded Grolsch and 1845-founded Heineken to abbey-made Trappist beers and an explosion of craft brewers, with more than 900 active breweries around the country today.

Borrel (“drinks”) is the perfect opportunity to raise a glass and bite into quintessentially Dutch borrelhapjes (bar snacks) such as kroketten (croquettes) including bitterballen (small, round meat ragout varieties) served with mustard, and kaasloempias (Indonesian spring rolls filled with melted Gouda).

Where to try it: The Netherlands overflows with bars, tap rooms and cafés (pubs) specializing in beer, such as Groningen favorite De Pintelier . Amsterdam’s historic, dark-timbered bruin cafés (brown cafés) like canalside Café Papeneiland are enchanting places to experience Dutch gezelligheid (conviviality and coziness).

Sip jenever (Dutch gin) at a tasting room

Made from juniper berries, jenever (Dutch gin; sometimes spelt genever) originated in the Netherlands around the 16th century for medicinal purposes. Jonge (young) jenever is smoother; barrel-aged oude (old) jenever has a much stronger flavor. It’s traditionally served chilled in a brimming, tulip-shaped shot glass and drunk by bowing low over the bar, with your hands behind your back, before taking a deep sip.

Where to try it: A historic proeflokaal (tasting room) such as Amsterdam’s De Drie Fleschjes or Wynand Fockink makes an atmospheric setting for a tipple, while in the capital’s Flevopark, try small-batch jenevers, liqueurs, herbal bitters and fruit distillates at Distilleerderij ’t Nieuwe Diep , in a magical woodland setting. In Doredrecht, Rutte is a history-steeped distillery, as is Nolet , powered by a wind turbine in a neo-traditional windmill in the “Dutch Distillers District” of Schiedam.

Arriving at Rotterdam Centraal from London St Pancras

Your train will arrive at Rotterdam Centraal station , right in the heart of the city. When you arrive at the station, please be sure to keep your ticket handy as you’ll need to scan it at the NS ticket gates to exit the station. The station is an iconic and ultra-modern building, reconstructed in 2014. The station is well connected to the rest of the city by the tram network and is within walking distance from the city’s main sights.

Europe’s hottest talent is moving to the continent’s second cities like Manchester, Rotterdam, and Stuttgart for a better quality of life—so bosses are following suit

W orkers are packing up their belongings and turning their backs on the constant grind of Europe’s most intense capital cities, like London, Amsterdam, and Berlin.

Instead, they are choosing “second cities” across the continent in an attempt to improve their quality of life and cut down their outgoings.

More talent is moving to places like the northern English city of Leeds, the Dutch port of Rotterdam, and the southern German hub of Stuttgart, according to the latest Innovation Geographies report from real estate services group Jones Lang LaSalle. 

Each of those cities saw an increase in their “talent concentration scores” last year thanks to an influx of skilled workers, as did other smaller European cities like Cologne, Birmingham, and Oslo.

Leeds, home to around 800,000 people, was second only to Tel Aviv in registering the biggest increase in its talent concentration score last year.

European talent hits the road

Interest in cheaper cities has ballooned since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, as workers proved they were able to work from anywhere, beginning a great recalibration in the work-life balance tradeoff.

Major cities across the globe are dealing with seemingly insurmountable housing crises, added to other cost-of-living pressures stoked by generationally high inflation.

That has helped push workers to find cheaper accommodation away from the crowded bustle of their capitals, and according to JLL, investors are now following suit.

“In recent years, talent shortages, rising home prices and regulatory pressures have catalysed expansion into lower-cost markets, aided by more flexible working patterns and technology,” the authors of the JLL report wrote.

The moves from Europeans mimic trends seen in the U.S.

In recent years, Americans have walked away from pricey States like New York and California in favor of places like Texas, Georgia, and North Carolina. 

RTO mandates 

There is likely to be a reckoning though, as more and more companies renege on their fully remote working pledges, and order staffers back to the office either full-time or in a hybrid model.

Recent data from LinkedIn found remote job postings had plummeted by around 20% in major European countries including Ireland, Germany, and France. They had fallen 13% in the U.K.

Applications for remote postings, meanwhile, have stayed relatively flat, suggesting employers offering remote work options will have their pick of the best talent.

However, it now seems that developers and employers are responding to those shifting movements by bringing jobs to those workers, rather than embracing a remote work culture concentrated in London. 

Mid-sized European cities enjoyed some of the biggest rises in innovation last year, as property developers and companies eyed up new locations for growth thanks to a growing demand for housing and an increased supply of workers.

The two European cities that JLL earmarked as “ones to watch” were the northwestern English city of Manchester due to its young talent and relative affordability, and Lisbon, which has become a sunny paradise for digital nomads working remote jobs.  

“Many of the “most-improved” markets referred to in our research are lower-cost, mid-sized and lifestyle-focused cities, such as Lisbon, Manchester and Toulouse,” said JLL’s director of city futures and global insight, Phil Ryan.

“All these cities offer cultural amenities, shorter commutes, and access to nature, making them particularly attractive to talent.”

Europe’s major cities continue to come up trumps in terms of overall talent concentration, with cities like London, Berlin, and Stockholm still commanding the best workers.

But there may be hope for workers who fled for a quieter life during the COVID-19 pandemic that their careers need not suffer by upping sticks. They just need developers’ and employers’ money to follow them.

Visit Rotterdam as it transforms itself into a floating city

This flood-prone Dutch city, one of the world’s largest ports, is meeting the challenges of rising seas with innovative architecture.

Facing the North Sea, sliced by three major rivers, and dotted with lakes and streams, the low-lying Netherlands has long been vulnerable to flooding. After the devastating deluge of 1953 killed almost 2,000 people, the proactive Dutch government devised the ambitious Delta Programme , creating dams, dikes, and sophisticated, computer-controlled storm barriers. The ensuing years brought additional flood-taming tactics such as catchment areas that mimic natural river floodplains, and “green dikes” covered in water-absorbent clay and grass to dampen waves. These national initiatives have also helped the country address the growing global problem of rising seas.

Rotterdam , the Netherlands’ second largest city, tackles climate change with a singular inventiveness. Flattened during World War II, the city remade itself, embracing daring architecture . With 85 percent of this delta city below sea level, Rotterdam manages water overflows with creative solutions, such as plazas, garages, parks, and gardens designed to act as temporary reservoirs.

“These [and other] urban projects will make the city better equipped to deal with rainwater, improve our urban mobility, and reduce heat stress, and in effect…make our city more resilient, healthier, and enjoyable for all,” says Arnoud Molenaar, Chief Resilience Officer of Rotterdam.

Here’s how visitors can check out some of these innovative venues themselves.

Buy milk from a floating farm

Some 40 brown-and-white Meuse-Rhine-Issel cows spend most of their day in an airy stable on the top level of the three-tier Floating Farm , a micro-dairy moored in the Port of Rotterdam. (They can also graze on shore.) Robots maneuver about, available to milk and feed them, and to scoop up manure. A solar panel-lined canopy provides the cows with shade and also collects rainwater that’s purified for them to drink. Milk, buttermilk, yogurt, and butter are processed on the middle tier, and wheels of Gouda-style cheese mature on the cooler, lowest level sitting below the water’s surface. “Bringing food production to the city not only reduces food miles but also creates awareness about food production,” says Minke van Wingerden, co-founder of the Floating Farm.

Visitors can buy dairy products in the farm’s shop on shore, which is open from Tuesday to Saturday 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. They can tour the floating farm itself at these times, following the elaborate signage that guides them through the facilities. They can roam the top floor, watching cows get milked, and then navigate to the level below to see milk- and yogurt-processing.  

Stay overnight in a wikkelboat

Solar-powered and sustainably made, wikkelboats are two-room boutique houseboats, available in Rijnhaven and Wijnhaven harbors (with more locations in the works). Each is constructed from two dozen layers of corrugated cardboard, making them light, while also providing soundproofing and heat insulation. (Their whimsical sounding name is apt, given that wikkel is Dutch for “wrapper.”) Varying in size and amenities, each of the wikkelboats has a well-stocked kitchenette, some a washer/dryer, and some with a five-person outdoor jacuzzi. Guests can rent water toys, including stand-up paddleboards, pedal boats, and canoes/kayaks. “Guests love unwinding in the jacuzzi while enjoying the urban landscape,” says CEO Sander Waterval. Wikkelboats are also available in the Dutch town of Den Bosch.

Savor vegetarian fare in a floating restaurant

A 60-foot-long floating gangway provides access to Floating Office Rotterdam (FOR), located in tranquil Rijnhaven, a former industrial harbor. Constructed of wood, this three-story building is carbon negative and energy positive, with a roof divided between solar panels and grass that absorbs rainwater, dissipates heat, and provides an ecosystem for birds. The cantilevered roof and balconies reduce overheating, and harbor water is used to warm or cool the interior as needed.  

“Combining high-tech with low-tech solutions is an innovative take on sustainable architecture,” says Albert Richters of Powerhouse Company, the project’s architectural firm. In June, the company welcomes the public to its on-site office, as part of Rotterdam Architecture Month’s annual Open Office Day.

One of FOR’s tenants is the upscale restaurant Putaine , designed with abundant floor-to-ceiling windows. Helmed by acclaimed restaurateurs Eva Eekman and Michael Schook, Putaine serves a seasonal menu of small dishes, with a focus on vegetarian items. The artistically presented delicacies offer plenty of sensory surprises, such as barbecued avocado with green curry and yuzu. “We do our very best to operate as sustainably as possible,” says Eekman, who also stocks natural wines. In warm weather, visitors can dine or drink on the waterfront terrace, or take a dip in FOR’s pool.

Visit a floating villa

In Nassauhaven, a disused harbor, the Harbourlofts are 18 two- and three-story villas designed to be carbon-neutral. Each off-the-grid villa is equipped with solar panels, a water purification system, and a biomass installation or heat pump to generate heat. Residents—including the project’s architect, Pieter Figdor, who recently moved in—have access to e-charging stations and shared e-cars and e-bikes. Set on concrete pontoons and anchored to the harbor bottom with steel mooring poles, the lofts are highly stable, though you’ll still feel some motion. Adding to the green sensibility: the villas in this flood-prone area look out onto a nature-friendly tidal park developed both for the aesthetics and as an adaptation to flooding. (The plants help soak up water, as does the clay surface.)

De Rotterdam Tours offers a two-hour, guided floating city tour that includes visits to the quay or the terrace of a floating villa, as well as to the exterior of FOR and a wikkelboat ($527/group, plus $8/per person for a water taxi).
