Samsung has an EP-TA865 Travel Adapter in the making with 65 Watt fast charging technology. Meant for the Galaxy S21 Ultra or the Note 21 Ultra?

This week, Samsung will introduce the Galaxy S21 smartphone series during the Galaxy Unpacked 2021 event. It is expected that Samsung will no longer supply a charger and earplugs with the three new models. The FCC approval has shown that the base model will support fast charging with a maximum charging power of 25 watts. It is expected that this will also apply to the Galaxy S21 Plus and S21 Ultra.

Last year, Samsung chose to equip the S20 Ultra with 45W fast charging technology. However, with the Note 20 Ultra, this was limited to 25W. Thus, it seemed for a while that Samsung does not want to prioritize fast charging technologies.

Nevertheless, a new photo has now surfaced, showing that Samsung is indeed working on a faster charger. Is this 65W charger predestined for the Galaxy Note 21 Ultra , which is expected later this year, or does Samsung still have a surprise in store for the Galaxy S21 Ultra ?

Samsung 65W Travel Adapter

It is a 65 Watt fast charger with model number EP-TA865 – thanks for the tip @chunvn8888 . This same model number already passed the Korean certification institute in September 2020. The Travel Adapter with model number EP-TA865 comes from manufacturer Solum, a well-known supplier of Samsung chargers. The certification already showed that it is a 65W charger. Now the first real photo has also surfaced, confirming that this Travel Adapter is indeed meant for Samsung.

However, it remains to be seen when Samsung will announce this charger. All details about the Samsung S21 Ultra seem to be known by now. The chance is therefore very small that this travel adapter is intended for the upcoming flagship.

It is possible that this charger remains predestined for the Note 21 – which will most likely be the last Note smartphone that Samsung will introduce, before the South Korean manufacturer says goodbye to its now 10-year-old high-end smartphone series.

In any case, Samsung will not be the first manufacturer with a 65W charger in its portfolio. Last year, the Oppo Find X2 Pro was launched with 65W SuperVooC 2.0 technology. The Oppo Reno 4 Pro, introduced later that year, also comes standard with a 65W charger, as does the OnePlus 8T . With such a fast charger you can fully charge a 4,000 mAh battery in just half an hour. A few minutes on the charger is enough to get you through the day – ideal!

Two wire, not three (i.e. not earthed). I understand this is the norm in EU and other parts of the world, so assume this is not a problem. The product was delivered without the mains cable described on the webpage as being part of the package. I contacted the supplier who, to their credit, shipped a power cable with plug attached (to connect adapter to mains socket) straight away - it arrived the following day. With this in place, adapter seems to work fine.

Samsung 65W PD charger gets certified

The Samsung Galaxy S22 might support the new 65W adapter that was certified recently, and reveals the charging speed, and other useful information.

A few days ago, we mentioned that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S22 series might support 65W fast charging . Today, we get to see a 65W charger get certified, revealing the model number, charging speed, and other useful information.

The 65W fast charger has the EP-TA865 model number, and it was certified by the Danish UL (Demko) authority recently (via GSMArena ). The new charging adapter supports USB Power Delivery (PD) and Programmable Power Supply (PPS) that can deliver up to 65W charging steps at a standard 20 volts of power and 3.25A. It can also do 5V, 9V, and 15V output, meaning that it supports most of the PD standards, and it could also use it to charge other laptops and other tablets or smartphones.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 series are reported to support the new 65W charging standard. However, you probably shouldn’t expect to see this in the box since Samsung doesn’t include chargers anymore with its high-end, premium devices. There were rumors that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 may support it, but other leaks claimed that both the Fold and the Z Flip 3 might only stick to just 15W of charging. We’ll find out more at the August 11 Samsung Galaxy Unpacked Event. Hopefully, the new 65W charging standard will bring some new, competitive charging speeds to the Galaxy lineup, offering significantly fast charging speeds.

What is the PD charging standard?

PD stands for Power Delivery. It’s a charging standard that allows the handling of a higher power. It can fast-charge devices over a USB connection; most often, it’s used via a USB-C cable. The Power Delivery standard can provide a high-speed charging speed at a variable voltage, intelligently adjusting the output to ensure everything goes safely and smoothly. Both the power adaptor and the smartphone communicate with each other to determine what the best and most efficient speed it is to charge at.
