Located on the East China Sea and the mouth of the Yangtze River, Shanghai is the largest city and most developed city in China. Nearly a third of China’s exports come from the area and it attracts almost a quarter of all the country’s foreign investment, more than any single developing country.
Its skyline is filling with skyscrapers while shiny shopping malls, luxurious hotels and prestigious arts centers are rising alongside. The city nights in Shanghai are representative of the Western view of China cities with bright neon signs, bustling streets and numerous businesses.
When it comes to getting around in Shanghai, this city has everything, including an extensive Metro system. The most popular place to go for a stroll is the Bund , Shanghai’s colonial riverfront along Huangpu River. While levies have significantly changed the Bund’s appearance, a number of architecturally significant buildings are adjacent to the strip and are still visible.
Visitors will see a few remnants of old China in Shanghai. However, the city is markedly modern with futuristic buildings like the Mercedes-Benz Arena and the Oriental Pearl Tower dotting the landscape.
Visiting museums is the best way to get a look at the culture of the area and how it has changed over the years. Moreover, the museums tend to be in interesting buildings as well. These include the Shanghai Natural History Museum, the Shanghai Museum and the Rockbund Art Museum.
3. Great Wall of China
![tourist spots in china Great Wall of China](https://www.touropia.com/gfx/b/2014/02/great_wall_of_china.jpg)
One of the world’s greatest architectural and engineering triumphs, the Great Wall of China spans over 6,000 kilometers and is the country’s most famous sight. In total, it passes through 15 Chinese provinces. Its watchtowers, gates, and fortifications are strung from the Desert in the west to the Bohai Sea in the east.
Built over the centuries and millennia by various Chinese kingdoms, states, and empires, the wall meanders through treacherous terrain and past some spellbinding scenery. While its earliest segments were built back in the 7th century BC to protect people from raiders, many of its most famous parts date to the Ming Dynasty .
As it snakes across mountains, valleys, and hills, the Great Wall has plenty of stunning scenery for visitors to enjoy. While some parts are very well-restored, others lie in wild and remote regions and are in various states of disrepair. One of the most popular sections of the Great Wall to visit is Badaling, just outside of Beijing, while Jinshanling draws hikers due to its untouched nature and fabulous views.
2. Hong Kong
![tourist spots in china Hong Kong](https://www.touropia.com/gfx/b/2014/02/hong_kong.jpg)
Located off China’s southeastern coast, Hong Kong is a glittering, world-class commercial center where Chinese culture, British colonial influences and modern day high-technology blend together. While it contains the world’s highest concentration of skyscrapers and one of the highest population densities, Hong Kong also offers plenty of green spaces, mountain views and beaches.
Some of the must-see attractions include the famous Victoria Harbour , which is a spectacular sight at night with all the dazzling skyscrapers and The Peak, Hong Kong Island’s highest hill which offers awe-inspiring views of the harbor.
![tourist spots in china Hong Kong Soho](https://www.touropia.com/gfx/b/2014/02/hong_kong_soho.jpg)
From amusement parks like Ocean Park and Disneyland Hong Kong to prestigious museums, luxury hotels, bustling night markets, horse racing, beautiful beaches and rides on the world’s longest outdoor escalator, Hong Kong has something for everyone.

Eating in Hong Kong is an experience all itself with a wide variety of cuisines from international to local Cantonese. A popular food style is dim sum , which involves small portions of food traditionally presented in steamer baskets. Typical dim sum dishes include tasty dumplings with meat, rice noodles, steamed vegetables and soups all served with Chinese tea.
![tourist spots in china Beijing](https://www.touropia.com/gfx/b/2014/02/beijing.jpg)
Beijing is the current capital city and remains one of the most popular places to visit in China. Its history dates back more than 3,000 years and much of that history is still alive within its borders. Beijing literally means Northern Capital , a role it has played many times in China’s long history.
It first became notable in Chinese history after it was made the capital of the State of Yan under the name Yanjing . The Mongols seized the city in 1215 and from 1264 it served as the capital of a united China under Kublai Khan. After the fall of the Mongol-founded Yuan dynasty in 1368, the capital was initially moved to Nanjing but was moved back in 1403 and received its present name.
![tourist spots in china Forbidden City](https://www.touropia.com/gfx/b/2014/02/forbidden_city.jpg)
Beijing is home to Tiananmen Square , the Forbidden City, the National Museum of China, as well as the Old and New Summer Palaces. These and other attractions are perfect for observing Chinese gardens, ancient architecture and Chinese culture from a range of periods in the country’s history.
There are numerous temples within and just outside of the city for those who want to witness Confucius, Taoist and Buddhist landmarks or perhaps have a spiritual experience. One of the most popular places to view the Great Wall of China is at Badaling , located about an hour from Beijing .
Known for its flatness and regular construction, the city has only three hills and its concentric ring roads are actually rectangular, like the configuration of the Forbidden City . Beijing boasts an extensive public transportation network, which includes an extensive subway system.
There are bike trails, but travelers may find the pollution too oppressive for cycling. For more than 100 years, Wangfujing Commercial Street has been the best place to shop in Beijing. However, the Yashow and Silk Street Markets are also very popular.

The top 20 places to visit in china.
![tourist spots in china hangzhou china](https://clairesfootsteps.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/hangzhou-1871458_1280-1.jpg)
China: it’s a country of legend and enigma, brimming with possibly the most dynamic history of any country in the world. It only opened up to outside tourism in the late 1970s, and to this day still sees relatively few international tourists when compared to other Asian countries. So where are the top 20 places to visit in China? After Beijing and Shanghai, what are the best places to visit in this colossal country?
In my opinion, there’s really nowhere as compelling as China. Whether you travel for history, nature, cities, or beaches – there’s something for you in the world’s most populated country. Travel in China is an extraordinary adventure; and a very humbling experience, as it will make you look on the world from an entirely new perspective.
If you’re planning on venturing to China, you’ll probably be wondering what the top 20 places to visit in China are. This list will show you some of the best bucket-list destinations in China, whether they be huge cities, sprawling national parks, ancient towns or mountains.
Also, just FYI – you might think that China is somewhere difficult to visit where you have to obtain an expensive visa to set foot in. Well, you’re kind of right, but there is a way to visit China without a visa ; if you book a multi-day layover (up to 3 days in participating cities), you don’t need a visa! So these places to visit in China have just got a lot more accessible!
The Top 20 Places to Visit in China: A Complete List
![tourist spots in china beijing](https://old.clairesfootsteps.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/beijing.jpg)
No visit to China would be complete without a trip to Beijing , the capital of the nation and one of the most important cultural hubs of the country. Visit Beijing to enjoy its rich history and culture; found all over the city, from the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven to its Olympic Stadium and art district.
Learn about Chinese history in the many Beijing museums which give you an insight into this complex and intriguing nation, and of course, enjoy the rich cuisine of the capital at some of the street food stands and restaurants in the city. Once you’ve seen all of the highlights, there are some more off-beat activities in Beijing as well . With its huge international airport that services destinations in all corners of the globe, Beijing is a great place to fly into and begin any China trip!
The Great Wall
![tourist spots in china great-wall-of-china-814143_960_720](https://old.clairesfootsteps.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/great-wall-of-china-814143_960_720.jpg)
The Great Wall is a mesmerising architectural feat, stretching over 21,000 kilometres; it spans from near the North Korean border to Gansu province. There are lots of points from which it can be visited; most popular, best preserved and easily accessible are Mutianyu and Badaling, but other spots to visit from Beijing are Jiankou (where you can camp on the wall!) and Jinshilang.
And of course, you’re not limited to visiting the Great Wall from the country’s capital – other spots where you could reach the wall are Hushan (by the North Korean border), the Overhanging Great Wall in Jiayuguan or the Yanmen Pass in Shanxi.
![tourist spots in china Pingyao City](https://old.clairesfootsteps.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/china-1162760_1280.jpg)
The medieval city of Pingyao is a completely unique place to visit – it is unlike any other city in the country . It was the old banking centre of China; visitors can see old vaults and abacuses used to count money on! There are also historic buildings, preserved courtyards and a city wall to climb and enjoy a spectacular vantage point over the ancient metropolis.
As well as exploring the beautiful city, there’s amazing food – such as Pingyao pancakes – and plenty of temples and other attractions. Conveniently located between Beijing and Xi’an, it’s a perfect place to visit that not so many travellers make it to.
![tourist spots in china Harbin Ice Festival](https://old.clairesfootsteps.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/harbin-2323272_1280.jpg)
The best time of year to visit Harbin, located near China’s border with Russia, is without a doubt during its winter ice festival . This takes place in January every year and is absolutely mesmerising, with ice sculptures all over the city and a fantastic atmosphere.
But even if you can’t visit Harbin during this time of year, it’s still worth checking out for the unique Chinese/ Russian influence, the barbecues that line the streets and the permanent ice hall exhibition.
Xi’an
![tourist spots in china Xi'an Terracotta Warriors](https://old.clairesfootsteps.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/terracotta-army-1864972_1280.jpg)
Situated at the start of the Silk Road, Xi’an is a wonderful merge of eastern and western Chinese cultures. The city presents this in the fusion of Islam and Buddhism with the city walls; the Muslim Quarter houses a mosque and some of the best street food in China, yet there are many Buddhist temples – the most famous of which is Big Goose Pagoda.
Xi’an is the launching pad for the nearby terracotta warriors; and of course, there is a rich history throughout the city – it was one of the ancient capitals of China, after all! Popular things to do within Xi’an are to walk the city walls (which can be walked or cycled), explore the Muslim Quarter and visit the mosques and temples within the city. It is also in close proximity to Huashan, considered the most dangerous mountain in China . Xi’an is about 13 hours from Beijing on a regular train, or from just 4.5 hours away on a high-speed bullet train.
![tourist spots in china](https://old.clairesfootsteps.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/shutterstock_1066960799.jpg)
The capital of Inner Mongolia, Hohhot is a fantastic place to visit for those who want to experience nomadic culture and the terrain of Mongolia without having to get a separate visa for Mongolia . Visit gorgeous grasslands, the typical scenery of the area which can be seen on day or multi-day trips from Hohhot and experience unqiue sceneries and authentic Mongolian hospitality. Once you’re back in the city, you can enjoy its unique features; there is a Muslim community in the city, as well as other ethnic minorities. Taking a train from Hohhot to Beijing takes between six and nine hours.
![tourist spots in china](https://old.clairesfootsteps.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/shanghai-588283_1280.jpg)
Shanghai, with its modern skyline and famous river, is appealing in a different way than most Chinese cities. There is a rich history here that is quite unlike any other Chinese city – Shanghai enjoys a strong European influence, including a French Concession and various British impacts.
You’ll never be bored in dynamic Shanghai; from its glittering Bund to its thriving restaurant, bar and arts scenes, there’s so much to explore in this booming city. Highlights include the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, Nanjing Road and the traditional Yu Garden.
Shanghai is also a perfect springboard for some of the amazing national parks, towns and cities in the area, including Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) and the water town of Zhouzhang; known as ‘The Venice of China’ – which also features on this China tourist attractions list. Shanghai has a huge international airport, and can also be reached by rail from most cities.
![tourist spots in china](https://old.clairesfootsteps.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/hangzhou-1871458_1280.jpg)
A city steeped in history and beautiful culture, it is no wonder why Hangzhou is one of the most popular tourist cities in China. With beautiful scenes like a gorgeous lake, eloquent temples and authentic Chinese tea, Hangzhou is probably one of the most quintessentially Chinese cities you can visit.
Described by Marco Polo as ‘Paradise on Earth’, visiting Hangzhou will remind you of a more traditional Chinese culture than is demonstrated in Bejing and Shanghai. If you’re debating whether Hangzhou is worth visiting , know that it is easy to reach from Shanghai, even if it is just for a day trip. Hangzhou is just 200km from China’s largest city, and the shortest high-speed trains make the journey in only 45 minutes!
![tourist spots in china](https://old.clairesfootsteps.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/architecture-2187968_1280.jpg)
It used to be the capital of the south of China; Nanjing is a fascinating city which blends the old and new. This is represented in the ancient city walls as well as the booming shops and industrial areas of the city. However, in its more recent history, it has been the site of some dark history.
The Nanjing Massacre, which was one of the bloodiest events of the Japanese occupation of Manchuria, is commemorated at the Nanjing Massacre Memorial. It is well worth visiting this city just to learn about the event; it is vital that travellers know about these things to get a real understanding of the country.
![tourist spots in china](https://old.clairesfootsteps.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/china-1518330_1280.jpg)
Spice is nice in Chengdu! Travellers visit to see pandas (although I wasn’t sure about the ethics of the Chengdu panda base ) but stay for the incredibly spicy hotpots and other delicious foods. If you’re not into getting your socks blown off with extreme spice levels, other things to do in Chengdu include browsing the many pagodas, temples and laneways of this Chinese city.
It is also a gateway to other incredible parts of Sichuan, including nearby Leshan and the Giant Buddha and Mount Emei. Chengdu is very well connected to Shanghai, Beijing and south China by rail links.
Yangtze River
![tourist spots in china](https://old.clairesfootsteps.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/the-three-gorges-788285_1280.jpg)
The longest river in Asia and the third largest in the world, the Yangtze is home to some spectacular scenes and an amazing amount of history. The river basin drains one fifth of the land area of the entire country; and it stretches from Qinghai in the west to Shanghai in the east. Its most famous attractions are the Three River Gorges; you can take a cruise from Chongqing to admire them. Chongqing is well connected to most major cities in China by rail.
![tourist spots in china](https://old.clairesfootsteps.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/jiuzhaigou-2450174_1280.jpg)
Juizhaigou is one of those unbelievably beautiful spots that are difficult to sum up into words. These multi-tiered colourful waterfalls don’t look like they can be real, but rest assured that they very much are and are available for tourism, despite being undiscovered until 1972.
It’s a bit of a hair-raising adventure to reach Juizhaigou – it is located 10 hours by bus from Chengdu on some rough mountainous roads – but it is well worth it.
Note – Jiuzhai Valley has only just reopened to visitors after the August 2017 earthquake. Parts of the park may be limited for visitors and the number of travellers each day is restricted. make sure to check current restrictions before travelling there!
![tourist spots in china](https://old.clairesfootsteps.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/china-970426_1280.jpg)
Located in the South West of China, about six hours by train from the border with Vietnam, Kunming has a unique fusion of Han Chinese culture with Himalayan influences. Known as ‘The City of Eternal Spring’, Kunming is home to beautiful temples and parks, and has wonderful surrounding nature.
Check out the Stone Forest in Shilin – an easy day trip from Kunming – or the rice terraces to the south and the red fields in the north. Or catch a train or bus to the historic old town of Dali , a truly unique place in China. Yunnan is a beautiful province, and Kunming is fantastic to use as a base to explore. You can reach Kunming easily from Chengdu and from other cities in China by long-distance train; it is also only a 6 hour journey to Hekou, which is the border town with Lao Cai in Vietnam.
![tourist spots in china](https://old.clairesfootsteps.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/zhouzhuang-688578_1280.jpg)
Known as the ‘Venice of China’, Zhouzhuang is the country’s oldest water town. All houses are built on the river, and each has its own port. It’s a really pleasant place to just meander around the streets, but there are also plenty of old buildings and bridges to check out; including the twin Shide and Yong’an Bridges. The buildings date from the Ming and Qing dynasties, so there is plenty to admire here!
![tourist spots in china](https://old.clairesfootsteps.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/china-3349474_1280.jpg)
Geographically and culturally very similar to South East Asia, Guilin is probably most famous for the nearby Li River, which is featured on the 20 yuan note. Yangshuo is the best spot to cruise the Li River; boat tours take you around some of the best scenery and to the town itself. Within Yangshuo you can go cycling, take a Tai Chi or cooking class, or if you want to head back to the river you can bamboo raft past the town. Yangshou is a 1 – 2 hour bus journey from Guilin.
![tourist spots in china](https://old.clairesfootsteps.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/14329368_10153770961041976_1369642588_o.jpg)
Another side trip from Guilin, the Longsheng Rice Terraces are a must-see. The green paddy fields are spectacular, and hikes in the area can take you around the fields and through local towns, each with their own distinct culture. Tours are offered to the Longsheng area, but it’s very easy to visit them independently from Guilin . They lie around a three hour bus journey away from the city and can be done as a day trip or overnight stay.
![tourist spots in china hong kong](https://old.clairesfootsteps.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/hong-kong.jpg)
Hong Kong is and isn’t part of China; you need to go through a border crossing to get there, and you’ll notice some stark differences between the two. It’s also possible for most nationalities to visit Hong Kong without a visa, and it’s a good ‘intro to China’ if it’s your first time there.
The city and surrounding area are unique places to visit, and they’re great to see another side of Chinese culture. Highlights include the Big Buddha, Victoria Peak, exploring the Tsim Sha Tsui area and lots of shops, restaurants and nightlife. If you’re after a real adventure, stay in a hostel in Chungking Mansions and enjoy the amazing Indian food on the ground floor – a Hong Kong highlight for me!

12 Things Tourists Should Never Do When Visiting China
C hinese culture is one steeped in the very formations of human development. Ancient Chinese villages started cropping up around the Yellow River Valley around 7,000 years ago, but hominid populations seem to have occupied the landscape, harnessed fire, and constructed stone tools as many as 1.7 million years before our common present. The more contemporary 'Middle Kingdom,' a rough English translation of the nation's Mandarin name, is just as fascinating as its ancient past. Not only are visitors able to explore the country's antiquity in sites like the Great Wall, the Terracotta Warriors, or the Leshan Giant Buddha, but modern snippets of Chinese life are inviting attractions, too.
China holds a particular place of fascination in the minds of American travelers looking to take in new places around the world. China was historically closed off to Western trade and tourism until 1978. By the 1990s, the Chinese economy was booming, and foreign workers began to flood into the country's coastal cities, including ourselves in 2018. China is a truly rewarding, if sometimes frustrating, place for visitors to experience for themselves. For one thing, you shouldn't automatically expect anyone over the age of about 20 to be capable of conversing in English with you -- although this is certainly not a universal rule, a few basic phrases are a must . When visiting, be mindful of this and other cultural norms present in one of human civilization's oldest hallowed grounds.

Don't Talk About Politically Sensitive Issues
Chinese culture is one of great deference to tradition and a sense of honor. People in China often revere their family members, including long-deceased ancestors. Coupled with shifting political realities in the country, the sensitivity to honoring one another gives rise to an aversion to speaking of anything overly sensitive. This consideration extends to the political sphere as well. While Westerners may be quick to discuss their own take on policy issues and political developments, people in China are much more hesitant to have these conversations. This reality is even more pronounced when Chinese people speak with foreigners visiting their country.
In particular, Chinese people will be extremely reluctant to discuss what is sometimes referred to as the three T's. These are Tibet, Taiwan, and Tiananmen Square. All three issues are hot-button topics that should be avoided altogether when visiting the country. Indeed, when walking through Beijing with a tour guide, you might not even get a mention of the square that's situated prominently adjacent to a gigantic image of Mao above the outer entrance to the Forbidden City . Similarly, you'll be received with awkward silence and more than a few odd stares if you start talking about issues in the South China Sea. Leaving political conversation of all sorts at home is advised when planning a trip to China.
Don't Tip Unless It's For A Tour
Much like travels through Europe, adventurers looking for a getaway to China won't need to tip in most circumstances. The concept of tipping isn't one that has taken root here, and you might even be surprised to learn that servers and other service industry workers may even become embarrassed and try to give you back the money if you offer them a little something extra. As mentioned previously, honor and avoiding any kind of potentially embarrassing situation is crucially important in Chinese culture. Therefore, no matter how ingrained the concept of tipping might be in your own mind, you may actually be doing more harm than good by engaging in this act of generosity and thanks.
However, there is one important exception to keep in mind regarding the use of tips. If you are traveling with a tour guide or find yourself in a similar sort of environment, you absolutely should offer a tip. These types of workers rely on tips as part of their salary, and it is common practice to offer them something for their time in this industry. Even so, you might be relieved to find out that you won't have to budget a little bit of extra cash every day for tipping while you explore cities and towns, traveling around, and eating and drinking the local fare.
In Fact, Don't Expect To Use Cash Much At All
Importantly, it's worth noting that not only should you avoid leaving a tip on the table when you get up at a restaurant, you may not be using cash at all. Mobile wallet apps have only recently become a major factor in daily American life, but this concept has dominated Chinese personal finance for quite some time. In 2018, we rarely kept any cash, and we even found ourselves turned away on occasion in the event that our phone was dead -- precluding the use of mobile payment. In one instance, the shop across the street wouldn't sell us a box of matches because we were hoping to use a few coins. Unless you're dealing with small, local produce vendors (who bring in goods from outside larger cities every morning) or anyone similar, cash likely won't get you very far in 21st-century China. The community has become virtually cashless, with Alipay and WeChat digital wallets acting as a means to conduct transactions both large and small (we paid our rent and utility bills through WeChat transfers, for reference).
Fortunately, visitors exploring China today are more readily able to take advantage of these digital payment methods than they have been in the past. Transferring cash to an Alipay account can help you avoid hefty transaction and exchange fees and allow you to fit in more readily with the convenience these tools afford.
Don't Expect Personal Space On Public Transportation
Another feature of a visit to China you'll need to accept is that personal space isn't often in people's vocabulary. Chinese people aren't overly touchy-feely, and you'll typically want to avoid big dramatic displays of public affection even for people you know very well. However, in public spaces like the metro or tourist sites, you're unlikely to enjoy a whole lot of personal space. Chinese people have absolutely no problem in cramming into tight spaces with one another.
This might come as a surprise the first time you're faced with a long line or a packed metro train, but it's important to not be shy and just realize that this is a cultural norm. Public transportation is incredibly cheap, very fast in many larger cities, and typically offers a wide network of stops to help you get where you're going with ease. Using public transportation should be a part of your Chinese experience, but this means understanding that people may end up getting quite close to you.
Don't Visit A Chinese Friend's Home Without Bringing A Gift
For anyone who plans to spend time visiting friends in China, it's important to remember that visiting a Chinese home isn't complete without a gift. Just about any kind of gift is acceptable, including something to drink, toys for your friend's child, or even decorations. However, you'll want to avoid things like clocks, umbrellas, and chrysanthemum flowers. These items share a connotation with death and the end of things. Superstition may not be the correct word to describe this cultural phenomenon, but there is a strong tradition of word sound associations and the deference to omens that might appear quite similar on the surface.
The phrase associated with giving someone a clock as a gift sounds very much like the vocalized concept of seeing a loved one take their final breaths. Similarly, chrysanthemums traditionally appear during the mourning period after someone has passed. Umbrellas also bring bad vibes when given as a gift. The word for umbrella sounds a lot like the concept of separation, potentially suggesting subconsciously that the giver may want to end their friendship with the receiver.
Don't Forget To Pack Toilet Paper When Exploring
Public toilets in China won't always have toilet paper available. This is particularly pronounced in more rural parts of the country and in tourist destinations outside of Shanghai and Beijing, two of the most modernized and internationally diverse parts of the country. Places like the Terracotta Army in Xi'an and the Panda sanctuaries and research facilities in Sichuan, Chengdu, or Chongqing bring in quite a bit of interest from tourists but are far enough off the beaten path that only basic facilities should be expected. Even in larger cities, it's a good idea to pack sanitary wipes or toilet paper to avoid a potentially fraught situation if you happen to get unlucky when opting for a pit stop.
It's also worth noting that in many parts of China, toilets won't offer the same kind of amenities that you might be used to. It's common to see standing toilets throughout China, so practicing your squat ahead of the trip and rolling with this perhaps novel way of using the bathroom will be important preparation elements.
Don't Follow A Stranger To A Teahouse (Or Accept Any Similar Offer)
Strangers in China will often stare at foreigners without shame or stigma. You'll likely find that people will stare at you and continue making eye contact after you notice them. As far as we've been told by friends and coworkers from China, this is more a product of curiosity than anything else. It might be a little intimidating, but a person staring at you shouldn't be misinterpreted as aggression or the like. Unfortunately, visitors who are Black may be subjected to even more intense gazes. Some friends have even noted that Chinese people have touched their hair without warning. There's not much that can be said about this phenomenon other than trying to handle it with as much grace as possible.
That said, Chinese people won't generally approach you and start a conversation. Younger people may ask for pictures with you, but this is typically the extent of social contact with random strangers. Therefore, if someone approaches you and strikes up a conversation, you may want to be a little wary. In heavy tourist areas, a common scam involves an offer to visit an "authentic teahouse" or something similar. Always avoid these kinds of offers because you'll end up being charged a truly jaw-dropping figure for a simple cup of tea once the bill comes.
Don't Play With Your Chopsticks
Anyone who visits China will be eating with chopsticks a lot. You may also see shorter, more rectangular chopsticks than you might be used to in the U.S. when ordering food or eating at a restaurant. We found these stubby chopsticks fairly easy to manage, but it may require some practice to get used to them if you're accustomed to a different type or haven't used chopsticks very often already.
While testing out your chopsticks in China, it may be tempting to manipulate them with your hand in order to acquaint yourself. But make sure you don't play with them too much. Chinese people don't ever use chopsticks to point at one another or as a sort of prop. Chopsticks are for eating and eating alone. Additionally, you should absolutely never place chopsticks sticking straight up in your bowl. Similar to Japanese culture, chopsticks positioned like this resemble a ceremonial ode to the dead. In Japan, it's customary to leave a bowl on the table -- with chopsticks included -- for the loved one who has been lost. There is quite a bit of crossover in familial heritage in this region, so many people in China may perform the same ritual. Even for those who don't, however, chopsticks positioned like this look very much like the incense sticks used to commemorate a loved one's life, and you'll certainly get a few strange glances if you place your chopsticks in this manner.
Don't Expect To Wing It When Planning Your Trip
Before even setting foot in China, it's important to note that you won't really be able to wing it when planning an epic adventure. Previously, tourist visas required to enter China have been quite expensive, and a visa application required quite a bit of supporting documentation. To successfully gain entry to the country, you would have needed to already book your flight, reserve a hotel room, and include return flights. Chinese visa authorities have also been known to be a little difficult with passports that are damaged in some way or another. For reference, when applying for our initial visas to enter the country, we had to show up at the immigration office in person (in Hong Kong) rather than using the standard agency approach because our passport exhibited previous water damage. We also had to include letters noting the details of our previous travels to Turkey. Presumably, there must be some nations that perhaps raise eyebrows for visa-issuing purposes. Anyone with quite a bit of travel under their belt will want to look into any possible delays resulting from these issues.
It's worth mentioning that the requirement for considerable documentation accompanying a visa application (for U.S. citizens) changed on January 1, 2024, at least officially. However, this may not always be applied in practice, so providing supporting documentation remains a good idea as the new policy has time to settle.
Don't Wear Green Hats
Wearing a green hat might sound like a funny no-no when visiting a foreign country. However, in China, this practice signals an air of infidelity, and you'll surely get quite a few odd looks if you opt to travel around China with a green hat on your head. Green attire of other types is perfectly fine, and this stigma doesn't extend beyond your headwear.
It is not clear where this social norm came from, but it's thought that the term for wearing a green hat sounds similar to phrases relating to infidelity. Alternatively, anecdotal evidence suggests that sex workers and their relatives may have been forced to wear green hats at certain points in Chinese antiquity. No matter what the reality that lends itself to this understanding might be, a green hat is a symbol of impropriety that marks you or your loved one as unfaithful. Simply avoiding the color for headwear is a good idea when visiting China.
Don't Travel During Chinese Holidays
Cities like Shanghai totally empty out during holidays. Chinese New Year, in particular, sees the city virtually empty, which can be an eerie sight for anyone who's traversed its tremendously busy streets during other parts of the year. It might seem like good timing to explore China's bustling cities when the local population empties out for the holidays, but when they leave, businesses close down, and it can be challenging to find what you're looking for in terms of services, accommodation, and other travel-related experiences.
Similarly, if you're planning on visiting other sites around China, like the Tongguan Ancient City, Huashan Mountain in Shaanxi, or Harbin's winter festivals (in the north of the country), avoiding these holiday periods is equally important. China enjoys a staggering domestic tourism industry, and when people have time to press pause on their daily lives, they travel in gigantic numbers to these types of tourist attractions. As a result, you'll either see limits on your exploration or be inundated with other travelers all looking to experience China's cultural riches, driving up prices and making things far more crowded.
Don't Be Afraid Of The Food
Lastly, it's crucially important for visitors to the country to be as ambitious and adventurous as possible when it comes to their culinary experience. Food and drink are a major part of any visit to China, and missing out on the opportunity to eat delicious xiao long bao in Shanghai, biangbiang noodles in Xi'an, or the most amazing crispy duck you'll ever lay eyes on at Siji Minfu in Beijing is the perfect way to ruin your holiday. That's no exaggeration; food is a core part of the Chinese experience. From dumplings filled with all kinds of delicacies like lotus and green onions to hot pot restaurants, there is so much to love about Chinese cooking when experienced in its natural element.
Hot pot meals are a particularly unique and satisfying adventure. You order a broth as well as some combination of vegetables, rice or noodles, and meat sliced incredibly thin. Dunking these elements into the broth, you get a pick-your-own-adventure of sorts. These restaurants offer a variety of spice levels and additional toppings to throw into your broth, like chopped garlic, green onions, or mushroom sauces. Just make sure you taste any dark liquids before putting them into the broth because vinegar is often on tap next to soy sauce. The experience you enjoy with Chinese food can transform a trip to this fantastic country. Don't be afraid of all the unique dishes you'll find while traveling through China.

![tourist spots in china The Imperial Palace and the Forbidden City](https://www.planetware.com/photos-large/CHN/imperial-palace-forbidden-city-doors.jpg)
The Imperial Palace, also known as the Forbidden City, is China's most significant attraction and can trace its origins back to the Yuan Dynasty of the 13th century. Its immense size is the result of enlargements made during the Ming Dynasty between 1406 and 1420, after the capital was transferred here from Nanking.
All told, this beautiful palace has been home to 24 Ming and Qing Emperors, earning its nickname of the Forbidden City due to the fact ordinary citizens weren't allowed access. The complex covers 720,000 square meters, all of it surrounded by a 10-meter-high wall with towers in the four corners and a 50-meter-wide moat. It's divided into an area used for ceremonial and administrative purposes, as well as the private quarters once used by the Emperor and his concubines.
Highlights include the Meridian Gate, built in 1420; the Golden River Bridges, a network of five richly decorated white marble bridges; and the Hall of Preserving Harmony, which functioned as the Emperor's banquet hall.
Other places to visit include the Palace of Heavenly Purity, the largest hall in the Inner Court, and the Hall of Military Courage, a permanent residence and private audience hall for the emperors. The impressive 35-meter-high Hall of Supreme Harmony is notable as the country's largest surviving wooden building and for its splendidly decorated gilded imperial throne.
Located just a short walk away from The Palace Museum stands the historic Imperial College (Guozijian). Founded in 1287 by Kublai Khan and only closed in 1900, this beautiful structure served as the country's national university, and often saw the Emperors of old visit to further their education and knowledge. The complex covers more than 10,000 square meters, much of which can be explored.

![tourist spots in china The Great Wall of China](https://www.planetware.com/wpimages/2018/09/china-beijing-attractions-great-wall-of-china.jpg)
Beijing is only an hour away from what is undoubtedly one of the country's most famous historic structures: the Great Wall of China. Here at Badaling Pass, the first part of the Wall to be opened to tourists in the 1950s, you can enjoy a walk along an impressive section of the Great Wall dating from the 16th century and standing up to eight meters high.
Along the way, you'll be able to enjoy numerous towers and parapets offering superb views over the surrounding dramatic scenery. While a hilly walk, you can in fact take a pleasant cable-car ride up to the wall.
This much-visited section of the Great Wall can get busy, so if possible try to plan your trip for an early arrival.
Another popular spot to experience the Great Wall is Mutianyu, parts of which date back to the 6th century. Rebuilt and expanded over the centuries, it is becoming increasingly popular for its magnificent views, which are particularly beautiful during spring and autumn.
![tourist spots in china Tian'anmen Square](https://www.planetware.com/photos-large/CHN/tiananmen-square.jpg)
Tiananmen Square (the Square of Heavenly Peace) is the world's largest inner-city square. Designed to hold a million people, it was built to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Chinese Republic in 1958. Considered the center of communist China, the square's symbolic importance dates back to May 4th, 1919, when students demonstrated against the Chinese provisions of the Treaty of Versailles.
Highlights of a visit include the Monument to the People's Heroes (Rénmín Yingxióng Jìniànbei), a 38-meter tall obelisk consisting of 17,000 pieces of granite and marble, and the splendid Tiananmen Gate , known as the Gate of Heavenly Peace. It was completed in 1417 and was once the main entrance to the Imperial City.
Another important gateway is Zhengyangmen , or Qianmen, the southernmost gate into Tiananmen Square. Tracing its roots back to the early 15th century and restored in the early 1900s, this imposing structure is considered one of the most important landmarks in the city.
Other features of note are the Museum of the Chinese Revolution with its exhibits illustrating the various stages of the Chinese revolution from 1919 and the development of the Communist Party, and the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong , where the body of Mao rests in a crystal sarcophagus.

![tourist spots in china Beihai Park](https://www.planetware.com/photos-large/CHN/china-beijing-beihai-park-1.jpg)
Just a short distance from the Imperial Palace , Beihai Park is one of the oldest surviving imperial gardens in Beijing. Laid out at the beginning of the 10th century, this beautiful open space takes its name from nearby Lake Beihai (North Lake) and offers many good reasons to visit.
Among the park's most important structures are the Round Fort , dating from the Yuan period of 1271-1368, and the spectacular Hall of Enlightenment . Built in 1690, the hall is home to a one-and-a-half-meter-tall Buddha carved from a single block of white jade, and a large black jade vase from the early 12th century.
Another notable feature is the opulent residence of Song Qingling in which the widow of the founder of the Republic, Sun Yat-sen, lived for 18 years until her death (it's now a museum). You'll also want to see the Living Quarters of Mei Lanfang (Mei Lanfang Guju), a famous male star of the Peking Opera who specialized in playing the role of a woman.
Also try to include the residence of Guo Moruo on your Beijing itinerary. It was here, in a home built in traditional Chinese courtyard style, that the famous writer and historian lived from 1963 until his death in 1978. Also include the beautiful 17th-century White Pagoda on the Island of Exquisite Jade on your list.

![tourist spots in china The Temple of Heaven](https://www.planetware.com/photos-large/CHN/china-beijing-temple-of-heaven.jpg)
The Temple of Heaven (Tiantán) dates back to 1420 and incorporates a group of some of Beijing's most sacred buildings. Surrounded by lush vegetation, these lovely old temples and shrines are set out in two sections - one rectangular; the other semi-circular - which together symbolize Heaven and Earth.
It was here that, on the day of the winter solstice, the Emperor would ascend the Heavenly Altar in solemn ceremony to pray for a good harvest and offer sacrifices in the brightly decorated Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests (Qinian Dian). Built in 1420, in customary Chinese fashion of wood and entirely without nails, the hall sits on a three-tier marble terrace with balustrades and a roof covered with 50,000 blue glazed tiles (a marble plaque on the floor represents the dragon and the phoenix stone, symbols of the emperor).
Another highlight is the Hall of the Vault of Heaven (Huangqiong Yu). Erected in 153, it boasts a blue-tiled conical roof and was used to store the ceremonial plaques of Heaven and the Officials. Be sure to also visit the temple's Echo Wall , which echoes to even the quietest of voices, an effect exaggerated by three unusual echoing stones.

![tourist spots in china The Summer Palace](https://www.planetware.com/wpimages/2018/09/china-beijing-attractions-the-summer-palace.jpg)
Located an easy 30-minute journey by car, bus, or taxi from the center of Beijing, the city's Summer Palace (Yíhé Yuán) is a must-visit. Dating back to the 12th century and more than 700 acres in size, it's a picture-perfect setting, which certainly befits its royal status, boasting a large 700-year-old man-made lake and beautiful gardens.
Often included on organized tours, top things to see here are the western-styled "Marble Ship" (Shifang), the Hall of Well-being and Longevity (Renshou Dian) with its elaborate throne, and the beautiful courtyard adjoining the Hall of Happiness and Longevity (Leshou Tang Hall). You'll also want to see the impressive 19th-century Great Theatre, where you can catch performances of traditional Chinese plays and music.
One of the more popular things to do, if time permits, is to take a ride aboard the small pleasure craft (kids love the dragon-themed vessels) that ferry tourists to one of the palace's temples, as well as a stroll past the traditional riverside shops on Suzhou Market Street.

![tourist spots in china Beijing National Stadium](https://www.planetware.com/photos-large/CHN/china-beijing-national-stadium.jpg)
Recognized the world over for its role in the spectacular Summer Olympics held in Beijing in 2008, the National Stadium (Guójia tiyùchang) - also affectionately nicknamed the Bird's Nest - is well worth a visit.
Built with a hefty price tag, this remarkable structure owes its unique design to the influences of traditional Chinese ceramics and has, since the Olympics, been used to host large cultural events and performances including opera, pop concerts, and football matches. In winter, it's turned into the world's largest manmade indoor ski slope. (English language and self-guided tours are available.)
Another nearby attraction is the National Aquatics Center . It's also known as the Water Cube for its attractive night-time display, which sees it lit up and looking like a giant ice-cube. In addition to being the site of Olympic swimming events, part of the building has been turned into the fun Watercube Waterpark.
Afterwards, be sure to stroll along the lovely Olympic Green. This pleasant parkland and green space will take you past many of the most significant buildings from the 2008 Olympics.

![tourist spots in china The Lama Temple](https://www.planetware.com/wpimages/2021/01/china-beijing-top-attractions-lama-temple-yonghe.jpg)
Also known as the Yonghe Temple, the Lama Temple is one of Beijing's most attractive and best-preserved temples. Completed in 1745, the building served a political purpose by giving Lamaism, the religion of the then just annexed Tibet, an official seat in the capital. It was built to generous proportions and equipped with many valuable works of art.
Its most important feature is the Hall of the Kings of Heaven (Tian Wang Dian) with its statue of Buddha surrounded by the four kings who are provided with symbolic objects (a toad, sword, snake, and shield). Also noteworthy is the statue of Weituo, the protector of Buddhism, holding an iron staff.
Other important buildings include the Pavilion of the Four-tongued Stele (Yubi Ting), which houses a stele dating back to 1792 that contains the history of the Lama religion written in Chinese, Manchurian, Tibetan, and Mongolian; and the Hall of the Buddhist Wheel (Falun Dian), the teaching and assembly hall of the monastery, its interior dominated by a six-meter-tall statue, two thrones, and numerous sacred manuscripts.
Be sure to also see the largest building at the Lama Temple, the Pavilion of Four Thousand Fortunes (Wangfu Ge), with its enormous 18-meter-high sandalwood statue.

![tourist spots in china Beijing Capital Museum](https://www.planetware.com/photos-large/CHN/china-beijing-capital-museum.jpg)
Arts and culture buffs are extremely well catered to in Beijing. Of particular interest is the excellent Beijing Capital Museum, one of the country's leading art museums. Opened in 1981, the museum boasts a vast collection of artifacts, including ancient items of porcelain and bronze, traditional calligraphy and artwork, along with many fine statues from Chinese and other Asian cultures.
Other highlights of its collection of more than 200,000 important cultural artifacts - many originating from in and around Beijing - include the huge stele of Emperor Qian Long, weighing more than 40 tons, standing nearly seven meters in height, and containing ancient scripts and writings.
Another modern Beijing landmark worth visiting is the National Centre for the Performing Arts (Guójia dà jùyuàn), also nicknamed the Giant Egg. Considered one of the best opera houses in Asia, the building opened in 2001 and has since hosted many of the world's leading operatic performers (it's particularly worth visiting if you're able to take in a performance).

![tourist spots in china Beijing Ancient Observatory](https://www.planetware.com/photos-large/CHN/china-beijing-ancient-observatory.jpg)
Completed in 1442, the fortress-like Beijing Ancient Observatory (Beijing Gu Guanxiàngtái) lies in the east of the city near the station quarter and was continuously in use right up until 1929. It is widely considered one of the oldest such observatories in the world.
Among the 10,000-square-meter facility's many fascinating old pre-telescopic instruments are a celestial globe dating from 1673 and an 18th-century armillary globe depicting the planets (at least those that were known at the time), along with a number of large bronze instruments designed by the Jesuit missionary Ferdinand Verbiest. Once part of the old city walls, this tall brick tower serves as a museum offering a glimpse into the surprising amount of knowledge of the stars and planets that existed at the time.

![tourist spots in china The Fayuan Temple](https://www.planetware.com/photos-large/CHN/china-beijing-fayuan-temple.jpg)
Fayuan Temple (Fayuán Sì) - also known as the Source of Law Temple - dates back to the year AD 645 and consists of several halls where many ancient stone inscriptions are kept, the oldest dating from the 7th century. The temple has witnessed many of Beijing's most important historic events, including serving as a prison for Emperor Huizong in the 12th century, a place of examination for the highest offices of state, as well as a botanical gardens.
Today, the temple is a place of worship and the seat of the Buddhist Academy , the most important educational establishment in China. Other highlights include the bell and drum towers in the first courtyard; the Hall of the Kings of Heaven with its fine statues; the Mahavira Hall housing Buddhas of the present, past, and future represented in 18 Luohan figures; and, one of the temple's most precious objects, a Han Dynasty (AD 25-220) ceramic statue in the Dabianjue Tang Hall.
Another Buddhist site worth visiting is the Zhihua Temple . Dating from 1444, it's one of the most important original Ming period complexes in Beijing's old town. Of particular note is the two-story Tathagata Hall (Rulai Dian), named after its statue of the transcendental Buddha (it's also known as 10,000 Buddha Hall for the many small Buddha figurines adorning the walls).

![tourist spots in china View from Coal Hill Park](https://www.planetware.com/photos-large/CHN/china-beijing-coal-hill-park.jpg)
Located directly opposite the North Gate of the Imperial Palace, Coal Hill Park (Jingshan) offers some of the best views in Beijing, particularly over Beihai Park Lake and the Forbidden Palace . Taking its name from the coal that was once stored here for the Ming Emperors, this largely man-made hill - one of just a handful in Beijing - was started around 1416 during the construction of the Imperial Palace.
After years of receiving rubble from the old city wall and large quantities of soil from excavation of the moat surrounding the palace, the once-low natural mound soared to its current height. A highlight of a visit, in addition to the many splendid gardens and walkways, is an old acacia tree from which the last Ming emperor was supposed to have hung himself in 1644.

![tourist spots in china The Beijing Temple of Confucius](https://www.planetware.com/photos-large/CHN/china-beijing-temple-of-confucius.jpg)
A short walk from the Lama Temple in a pleasant side alley spanned by ornamental gates is the Beijing Temple of Confucius. Built in 1302, it's dedicated to the great philosopher and teacher, Confucius, whose teachings dominated public and private life for centuries.
One of China's best-known Confucius temples, the Beijing Temple once hosted many elaborate ceremonies honoring its namesake under the leadership of the emperor. The forecourt harbors 198 steles with inscriptions naming all 51,624 Confucian scholars who, after 1416, successfully passed the highest examinations of the state until abolished in 1904.
A highlight is the Hall of Great Achievements (Dacheng Dian). It's home to numerous shrines dedicated to Confucius, his students, and other Confucian philosophers, as well as many old musical instruments and other ritual items used in the celebrations, which take place on the large terrace in front of the hall.
Another religious site worth a visit for its fine exterior (non-Muslims aren't permitted to enter) is Niu Jie Qingzhen Si Mosque , built in AD 995. Beijing's oldest and largest mosque, it's in the Muslim quarter and includes a minaret, a six-cornered moon observatory tower, and two pavilions featuring numerous steles with Chinese and Arabic inscriptions.

Located in the northwest area of the city, the Beijing Zoo (Bei jing dòng wù yuán) covers an area of more than 220 acres and was established in 1906, making it one of the oldest zoos in China.
Boasting an impressive collection of close to 15,000 animals from 1,000 species - the largest in the country - the zoo includes many rare native species such as South China tigers, snow leopards, golden snub-nosed monkeys, and pandas, along with some not so rare, such as the red-crowned crane and Pere David's deer.
Species from across the world are also well represented and include elephants, lions, and jaguars, all spread around grounds that closely resemble classical Chinese gardens, complete with dense woods, meadows, rivers, streams, and ponds, along with a number of pleasant gazebos and terraces. The zoo also has a well-stocked aquarium.

![tourist spots in china The Old Summer Palace](https://www.planetware.com/wpimages/2018/09/china-beijing-attractions-the-old-summer-palace.jpg)
Although now mostly just ruins, the Old Summer Palace (Yuanmingyuan) is located in Yuanmingyuan Park in northwestern Beijing and is well worth a visit. Once the imperial residence of the Qianlong Emperor, it was considered one of the most spectacular achievements of Chinese architecture and garden design when constructed in the 1700s, and was for a time known as the "Garden of Gardens."
Looted and destroyed by the British and French during the Second Opium War in 1860 - the palace was home to a vast and important collection of art and antiquities - it took hundreds of troops three days to burn and demolish the site.
These days, the grounds serve as a popular public park, and the old ruins are a delight to explore. To gain a picture of just how spectacular the old palace once was, be sure to pop into the small on-site museum with its reconstructions and models.

Also known as Dashanzi Art District, 798 Art Zone is a unique art community, and one of the more unusual things to do in Beijing. It grew up in and around a former military manufacturing complex in Beijing. Now dedicated entirely to more peaceful pursuits, these interesting old factories and warehouses are home to everything from galleries to studios and exhibition spaces hosting events dedicated to the arts.
It's a delightful area to explore, with at every turn some interesting (and sometimes challenging) art on display (or performed) by artists from across China and from around the world. While still very much a hub of artistic endeavors, in recent years 798 Art Zone has also become increasingly gentrified, and is now as much a draw for its hip shopping opportunities - there's everything here from book stores and galleries to designer fashion boutiques - along with great cafés and restaurants.

![tourist spots in china National Museum of China](https://www.planetware.com/wpimages/2018/09/china-beijing-attractions-national-museum-of-china.jpg)
Occupying a large chunk of the east section of Tiananmen Square, the impressive National Museum of China is the second most visited art museum in the world after the Louvre in Paris (and also one of the largest).
Opened in 2003 and completely renovated in 2011, the museum serves as a place of education regarding the country's rich history, with a particular focus on exhibits related to culture and art. Expect to spend many an hour here as there is so much to see in each of the museum's 48 exhibition halls.
Particularly interesting among the museum's more than one million artifacts is the huge Simuwu Ding, the world's heaviest ancient bronzeware, as well as collections of rare gold, jade, and ceramic artifacts from various dynasties through the ages. Other interesting exhibits deal with the first human settlements in the country, as well as the founding of the communist state.
If you're planning a lengthy visit, note there's a café and teahouse serving refreshments. Also, a strict "no-selfie stick" policy is in place, so if you have one, be prepared to leave it back at your hotel or at the coat check.

China’s Golden Week Travel Signals a Revival. Plus, Why U.S. Travel Is Still Lagging
Peden Doma Bhutia , Skift
May 30th, 2024 at 12:42 AM EDT
China’s outbound travel is coming back, driven by favorable visa policies, increased airline capacity, and a growing interest in diverse global destinations. However, challenges remain, particularly in travel to the U.S.
Peden Doma Bhutia
In a rebound of international travel, over 1.5 million Chinese citizens embarked on outbound trips during the recent Golden Week holiday , marketing technology firm China Trading Desk told Skift.
This surge points to a significant revival in global travel following the easing of pandemic-related restrictions.
The relaxation of visa policies between China and several countries has played a crucial role in this uptick. During the Golden Week in late April and early May, the growth rate of inbound and outbound bookings outpaced domestic tourism, Trip.com Group told Skift.
Popular Destinations and Emerging Trends
According to data from Trip.com Group, Chinese tourists visited nearly 200 countries and over 3,000 towns worldwide during the Golden Week period.
Thailand emerged as the top destination, with over 215,000 Chinese tourists between April 27 and May 4, according to China Trading Desk’s data. Factors such as visa-free entry offer by Thailand, shorter flight durations, and cost-effectiveness compared to other destinations have driven this trend.
While strong, the numbers still haven’t reached pre-pandemic levels, said Subramania Bhatt, CEO of China Trading Desk.
![tourist spots in china](https://skift.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/China-Trading-Desk-May-day.png)
The popularity of outbound travel is further evidenced by Ctrip’s report of a 190% year-on-year increase in the number of outbound tourists. Alibaba’s Fliggy also noted a near doubling in outbound travel bookings during the five-day holiday, with per capita spending on outbound travel surpassing 2019 levels significantly.
Alipay transactions reflect this increased spending, with a 77% rise in overseas markets during the initial days of Golden Week, particularly in destinations like Thailand and Malaysia.
Challenges in US-China Travel
Travel to the U.S. still faces hurdles , with flight capacity between the two countries around 25% of pre-Covid levels. During the 2019 Labor Day holiday, 70,000 travelers journeyed from China to the U.S., but most recently it was around 42,000.
Bhatt cited several reasons for this:
- Limited Flight Availability: There’s a slower resumption of direct flights and connectivity between China and the US, impacting the ease of planning trips.
- Visa Processing Delays: Longer visa processing times have been a deterrent, likely due to staffing issues and backlogs caused by the pandemic.
- Geopolitical Tensions: Ongoing political tensions between China and the US may make some potential travelers hesitant.
- Concerns Over Racial Treatment: There is apprehension about the treatment of Chinese individuals in the U.S., which can influence travel decisions.

Airline Capacity and Pricing Trends
Though limited, there has been a gradual restoration of airline service and that has helped. Fliggy said that the average price per person for international air tickets dropped by more than 10% compared to the previous year.
The preference for Asian destinations remains strong, with 9 out of the top 10 outbound destinations being in Asia. Bhatt attributed this to the ease of travel, increased flight availability, and visa-free access in many Southeast Asian countries, as well as Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macau.
Europe continues to attract Chinese tourists, with over 100,000 travelers heading to European countries excluding the UK during the holiday season, according to China Trading Desk’s data. Trip.com reported notable increases in travel to Spain, Turkey, Austria, Slovenia, Italy, and Georgia, with year-on-year growth exceeding 1.5 times.
Domestic capacity in May still accounts for 92% of all seats to, from and within China this month, with international making up the remaining 8%, according to aviation data firm OAG .
Shifts in Travel Preferences
There is a notable shift towards exploring less traditionally frequented destinations. Austria, Turkey, Morocco, and other less traditionally frequented destinations by Chinese tourists saw the fastest growth rates in bookings, indicating a shift towards exploring new and diverse destinations
Fliggy also reported that bookings for long-distance travel to places like Austria, Turkey, Morocco, Russia, Portugal, Georgia, Egypt, Spain, Kazakhstan, and Brazil quadrupled compared to the previous year.
Additionally, Trip.com group noted significant increases in travel to Middle Eastern destinations such as Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait, with numbers more than tripling year-on-year.
Saudi Arabia and Qatar are set to increase the number of direct flights connecting China and Hong Kong, capitalizing on the resurgence of Chinese tourists. Having welcomed 140,000 Chinese tourists last year, Saudi Arabia aims to attract 5 million Chinese visitors by 2030.

https://www.scmp.com/news/asia/southeast-asia/article/3264849/china-extend-visa-free-travel-malaysians-30-days
Will China extend to 30 days to other countries in the future?
9 replies to this topic
No, China will not extend visa free entry length of stay from 15 to 30 days for the countries it has enabled unilateral visa free entry. Malaysia is probably the only case in this regard because both Malaysia and China have unilaterally, at almost the same time, proclaimed that they will allow the entry of Chinese citizens for 30 days and Malaysian citizens for 15 days visa free in respective countries. It is evident that Malaysia and China will now sign a bilateral agreement in the same way as it was done recently between China and Singapore & Thailand to allow each country citizens to enjoy 30 days visa free entry in respective countries.
I would say that 30 days visa free is a possibility even for other countries, but only under the condition that will lead toward some kind of reciprocity. It is enough to take a look at the Chinese suspension of 15 days visa free policy for Japanese citizens because China is constantly signaling to Japanese side to enable some kind of reciprocity. Honestly, it is hard to expect that some Schengen area countries that currently enjoy 15 days visa free policy will institute any kind of visa free or visa relaxed policy for Chinese citizens in the foreseeable future and even Chinese authorities know that and this is the reason why they did not institute 15 days visa free policy for all Schengen area countries.
Chinese citizens are visa free in Thailand for 60 days starting later this June or in early July but Thai citizens are visa free in China for only 30 days. Actually most of Southeast Asia is visa free for 30 days for Thai citizens whereas ASEAN citizens can enter Thailand visa free for 60 days soon (except Myanmar 14 days).
![tourist spots in china](https://static.tacdn.com/img2/badges/20px/rev_06.png)
The Chinese economy is struggling and tourism is down a lot from pre-pandemic levels. More liberal measures should be expected.
I wouldn't say that Chinese economy is struggling with projected 5% growth during this year:
https://www.wsj.com/economy/imf-raises-chinas-2024-economic-growth-forecast-to-5-d8edeb73
This is up from 4.6% of earlier forecasts, although this struggling thing has almost became a mantra when talking about the Chinese economy.
You believe these official numbers? This is China.
I have a lot of friends and family in China. A lot of unemployment and job cuts. Even public servants are getting salary cuts. My in-laws who are retired teachers are concerned about pension cuts.
These are the numbers presented by IMF and the article is published by The Wall Street Journal. All I can say is that the time will be the only unbiased verifier.
I don’t know your background but mine is finance/economics and I can tell you that the Wall Street Journal does not calculate these numbers. They just publish what they are told.
![tourist spots in china](https://static.tacdn.com/img2/badges/20px/rev_03.png)
Numbers are what you fudge them to be for some desirable outcome. A lesson learned from the Mao's era. But I don't think that's where things started. Probably from hundreds of years ago.

(Reuters) - A look at the day ahead in Asian markets.
An Asian economic calendar on Friday overflowing with top-tier indicators awaits investors, who look set to close out the week and the month on a downbeat note as worries grow over the strength of the U.S. and global economies.
Investors often cheer 'bad news' on the U.S. economy by bidding up risk assets on the view that the Fed will be forced to ease policy. Equally, 'good news' often drags stocks and bonds lower because rates may have to stay higher for longer.
Investors' reaction to revised U.S. GDP figures on Thursday followed neither play book - bad news was bad news. Slower GDP growth in Q1 pushed stocks, the dollar and bond yields lower, and relatively dovish comments from New York Fed president John Williams failed to provide much comfort.
The MSCI World, MSCI Asia ex-Japan, MSCI emerging market and Japan's Nikkei 225 indexes are all poised for their second weekly loss in a row. Rising bond yields, and now U.S. growth concerns, are taking their toll.
And could the U.S. tech fairy tale be starting to fade too?
Financial conditions certainly seem to be biting. According to Goldman Sachs, emerging market, Chinese and global financial conditions are the tightest in a month. Little wonder, perhaps, that investors are taking some chips off the table as the month end approaches.
It may be month-end on Friday, but there will be no rest for Asian markets. Not if the economic calendar is anything to go by.
China's official purchasing managers' index reports for May, a raft of top-tier indicators from Japan including retail sales, industrial production and Tokyo inflation, and first quarter GDP from India and Taiwan are all on tap.
China's PMIs are expected to show that manufacturing activity in May grew at a similar pace to the previous month when it barely managed to stay expansionary, reinforcing the fragile nature of the recovery in the world's No.2 economy.
China's economy blew past expectations to post growth of 5.3% in the first quarter, and a string of April indicators including factory output, trade and consumer prices suggest it has successfully navigated some near-term downside risks.
But the crisis-hit property sector remains a major drag, deflationary pressures persist, and capital is just as liable to be flowing out of the country than in.
Core inflation in Japan's capital, meanwhile, is expected to have picked up in May to 1.9% from a two-year low of 1.6% in April, and India's economy likely grew at a 6.5% rate in the January-March quarter - its slowest pace in a year - due to weak demand.
Here are key developments that could provide more direction to markets on Friday:
- China official PMIs (May)
- Tokyo inflation (May)
- India GDP (Q1)
