7. Architecture tours

What is it? In addition to Frank Lloyd Wright designs, Buffalo holds major treasures from more of America’s most prominent architects, including H.H. Richardson, Louis Sullivan, and America’s first certified female architect, Louise Bethel Bethune. Themed walking and bus tours around downtown and practically every neighborhood help you see them from every angle. Why go? Fortunately never torn down during Buffalo’s leaner years, lots of the buildings are taking on new life—Richardson’s impressive former asylum complex, for instance, is now the trendy Hotel Henry “urban resort” (which will soon include an architectural museum).

8. International restaurants

What is it? Buffalo has a long history of welcoming especially European immigrants, but in recent years it’s gotten even more interesting and diverse with newcomers from Asia, Africa, and beyond. The West Side Bazaar, on the colorful West Side where many fresh immigrants have settled, is a mini-food-hall showing off that diversity. Why go? Try, say, Ethiopian or Cambodian cuisine, all while supporting small biz—the West Side Bazaar is actually an incubator helping many entrepreneurs get their start.

9. City Hall

What is it? You say you didn’t come to see some boring government building, but hear us out. Buffalo’s 28-story municipal hall is a 1932 Art Deco masterpiece, and one of the largest city halls of any city in the country. Why go? Take the elevator 25 floors up and climb the last three floors for drop-dead views of the Queen City. From the observation deck you can see across Lake Erie, spot the spray of Niagara Falls, even glimpse the Toronto skyline on a clear day.

10. Bird Island Pier

What is it? This cool locals-only walkway goes a full mile and a half along the rushing Niagara River and out into the Great Lake it feeds from, Lake Erie. It even takes you under the massive Peace Bridge that leads across to Canada. Why go? For many escaped slaves, this was where the Underground Railroad led to freedom. A helpful new exhibit and fresh signage explain how they crossed the dangerous Niagara River and into Canada from here.

11. Olmsted’s Delaware Park

What is it? Frederick Law Olmsted, the designer of New York City’s Central and Prospect parks and perhaps America’s most famous landscape architect ever, was also behind Buffalo’s Delaware Park. Why go? There are multiple great rec options here, including running, rowing, trying AcroYoga, taking in some Shakespeare, or having a beer on the Terrace on the park’s cute little lake side; or golfing or checking out the zoo on its more expansive dry side.

12. Hertel Avenue

What is it? Buffalo’s Little Italy neighborhood is alive with some of the city’s best places to drink, including Ristorante Lombardo for Italian, Craving for new American, Lloyd Taco for street food, and Lake Effect Ice Cream for crazy-flavor dairy. Why go? Not only is a range of fancy-to-casual food on offer here, Hertel is also known for shopping, particularly home decor at stores like Room and Mimo Modern. Definitely peek into the street’s centerpiece, the lushly restored North Park Theater, too.

1. eat chicken wings.

Buffalo wings are not just one of the city’s pride and joy, but it is also the most famous wing city in America. And what better way to get a bite of this sauced-up chicken perfection than at the place where the dish is born, Anchor Bar ? Since 1964, Anchor Bar has served ‘the best wings in the world’ with their signature secret recipe that continues to win the hearts (and stomachs) of people across the globe.

But, don’t take their word for it, do your own research to find you favorite place for wingy goodness. You can follow the Buffalo Wing Trail and go chicken wing hopping to one of 14 of Buffalo’s best chicken wing joints, each with its own unique recipe (my favorite…so far..was Bar-Bill , highly recommended!)

2. Celebrate Dyngus Day

Dyngus Day is a Polish tradition celebrated on the Monday after Easter, where (traditionally) boys splash water on the single girls they like, and tap them with pussy willow branches.

In Buffalo, they started celebrating this popular holiday during the 1960s as a way to honor the Polish culture and heritage of its large Polish-American community (which is why the city is also known as the Dyngus Day capital of America.)

The Dyngus Day celebrations in Buffalo typically involve different events and activities, such as parades, live music, eating/drinking traditional Polish food and drink (like krupnik), wearing red and white colors, and, of course, water fights. And best of all, everybody (including you) can join in on the fun.

3. See the Plants at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens

The Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens is a historic botanical garden located within Buffalo’s South Park, and features a collection of over a thousand plant species, including tropical and subtropical plants, cacti and succulents, and a large collection of orchids. The gardens also feature several greenhouses and conservatories, including a Victorian-style tri-domed glass house modeled after the famous Crystal Palace in London.

Aside from traditional Buffalo wings, the city of Buffalo is also known for another classic: beef on weck. Beef on weck is a sandwich that has thinly sliced roast beef served on a kummelweck roll (hence the ‘weck’ in the name), which is a roll topped with caraway seeds and coarse salt. The sandwich is typically served with horseradish sauce and au jus for dipping.

While the sandwich’s origins are up for debate, it is commonly attributed to a German immigrant population in Buffalo during the 19th century. Here are some of the best beef on weck in the city:

Swan Street Diner : offers a classic beef on weck sandwich with slow-roasted beef and a homemade kummelweck roll.
Schwabls : renowned for their juicy, tender beef on weck featuring hand-carved roast beef and freshly baked kummelweck rolls.

12. Hike to the Eternal Flames Waterfall

The Eternal Flame Waterfall is located in Chestnut Ridge Park at Shale Creek Preserve, just south of Buffalo. What’s unique about this waterfall is the constant flame burning behind the small cascade of falling water, which is where it got its name. The ‘eternal flame’ is fueled by natural gas seeping through the rock, creating a mesmerizing sight and a popular destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts.

P.S.: The 2.3 km hike to the falls is moderately challenging (takes around 33 minutes to complete.) Be sure to wear proper hiking shoes, as the trail is mostly muddy and slippery.

COVID-19 PROTOCOL: As of June 2021 , New York State has lifted its COVID-19 travel advisory, but both domestic and international travelers must continue to follow CDC travel requirements. As of July 2021, the Canadian border is closed to all visitors (with the exception of those crossing for essential purposes).
WEATHER: The weather can change quickly in Buffalo, so pack and dress in layers. This is particularly smart if you know you'll be hanging near the chilly (but pleasant) breezes on the waterfront. Summers are warm, but winters can be severe, with feet of snow and real-feel temperatures often dropping well below zero degrees Fahrenheit.

The Albright-Knox Art Gallery was established by the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy in 1862. The Gallery has an impressive collection of modern and contemporary art, including the works of Vincent van Gogh, Joan Miró, and Piet Mondrian.

Burchfield Penney Art Center

The Burchfield Penney Art Center is a museum dedicated to the art and artists of Western New York. The museum has the most extensive public collection of the works of Charles E. Burchfield, as well as archives of more than 10,000 pages of handwritten journals and 25,000 drawings.

The museum offers a variety of educational programs and activities for the community through outreach programs, workshops, and online activities.

The Buffalo Transportation Pierce-Arrow Museum

The Buffalo Transportation Pierce-Arrow Museum is dedicated to the rich transportation history of Western New York. The museum opened in 2001 with a collection of vintage vehicles and transportation memorabilia, including the 1909 Thomas Flyer 6-40 Flyabout and the 1919 Pierce Arrow Intercity Bus.

The museum’s main highlight is a replica of Frank Lloyd Wright’s filling station. Wright designed a filling station with a second story for customers to relax while filling; however, the station was never built.

Located at the eastern end of Lake Erie, Buffalo is a fantastic place to live or vacation with lots of tourist attractions for visitors to check out. New York’s second-largest city Buffalo boasts a wealth of wonderful museums and pretty outdoor spaces with the world renowned Niagara Falls also not far away.

The city suffered greatly from deindustrialization, but in recent years its downtown and waterfront areas have been revitalized. As such, visitors can now find brilliant performing arts centers and art galleries alongside amazing architectural marvels and interesting historic sites.

Aside from delving into the city’s rich heritage and enjoying its thriving cultural scene, other things to do in Buffalo include watching one of its professional sports teams play or explore its pulsating nightlife. Much more than just Buffalo wings and cold winter weather, rejuvenated Buffalo is definitely well worth visiting if you have the chance.

12. Buffalo & Erie County Botanical Gardens

Set just fifteen minutes drive south of the center are the beautiful Buffalo & Erie County Botanical Gardens. Located within South Park, its lovely landscaped grounds and gardens are a treat to stroll around.

Established in the late 1800s, its huge collection of exotic plants occupies a striking Victorian-style glass and steel tri-domed conservatory. Based on both Crystal Palace and Kew Gardens Palm House in the UK, it houses everything from orchids and bromeliads to water features, a rainforest section, and collections of cacti and carnivorous plants.

Its outdoor gardens are just as delightful to explore as picturesque paths take you past an arboretum, butterfly garden, and children’s area with temporary exhibits and events also regularly taking place.

11. Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site

A fascinating place to visit, the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site can be found just five minutes drive north of the city center. Now a museum, it protects the elegant Ansley Wilcox House, which is where the renowned statesman was unexpectedly sworn in as 26th President of the United States on September 14, 1901.

Inside the gorgeous Greek Revival-style building, guests can find interesting exhibits on the life and legacy of the former President. There are also informative displays about the shocking events that led to his inauguration. These tell the story of his predecessor William McKinley’s assassination at the Pan-American Exposition and how Roosevelt rushed to Buffalo to hurriedly be named President.

While on tours of the infamous inauguration site, you can not only visit the library where he took the oath but see artifacts from the Exposition and some of the President’s personal possessions.

10. KeyBank Center

If you’re after exciting sports events and entertainment, then make sure to visit the KeyBank Center in downtown. Located alongside the Buffalo River, it is the home of the Buffalo Sabres who play in the National Hockey League with countless other sports, concerts, and events taking place each year.

Built in 1996, it is the largest indoor arena in the area with its multi-purpose design meaning it can just as easily put on fast and frenetic ice hockey matches as adrenaline-packed American football, basketball, and lacrosse games. Thanks to its layout, every seat is guaranteed a fantastic view while its steep stands make for an awesome atmosphere.

In addition to sporting events and wrestling competitions, the state-of-the-art center also regularly hosts concerts by big name artists such as Kanye West, Rihanna, and Justin Bieber.

9. Forest Lawn

The colossal cemetery of Forest Lawn lies just a ten minute drive north of the center. Although it is home to thousands of mausoleums, monuments, and sculptures, it looks more like a park than a graveyard as paths and ponds are dotted about its scenic confines.

Founded in 1849, it now covers a huge area with the rural cemetery’s delightful design and layout being modeled on the famous Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. As such, its rows of weathered graves and majestic monuments can be found amid lush lawns and beneath leafy trees, with the cemetery’s rolling hills and valleys only adding to its appealing aesthetic.

Now the final resting place of numerous influential figures from both the city and the States’ past, Forest Lawn perfectly mixes art with nature with stunning scenery and striking sculptures wherever you look.

8. Shea’s Performing Arts Center

Another popular thing to do when in Buffalo is to catch a scintillating show at Shea’s Performing Arts Center. Located right in the heart of town, its campus now has three fabulous theaters for you to check out that put on brilliant Broadway productions, plays, and more by a whole host of local and internationally renowned theater companies.

The crown jewel of both the campus and the city’s Theater District is undoubtedly Shea’s Buffalo Theater which first opened in 1926 and showed silent movies. Wonderfully well-preserved, it boasts a grand marble-clad lobby with an enormous and elegant balcony, ornate chandeliers, and a richly decorated ceiling overlooking its lavish stage and seating areas.

While watching a show here makes for a memorable experience, both Shea’s Smith and the 710 Theatre put on awesome spectacles with unforgettable stand-up comedy nights, dance shows, and theater performances.

7. Pierce-Arrow Museum

Just a short stroll southeast of the center you can find the splendid Pierce-Arrow Museum. Home to classic cars, artifacts and exhibits, it offers a fascinating look at the important role Buffalo played in the early days of the automotive industry.

Founded in 1997, the museum now occupies several buildings downtown with countless shiny cars, vintage bicycles, and amazing old motorcycles scattered about its showroom. While most are from the Pierce-Arrow Motor Car Company, many other makes and models are displayed alongside interesting exhibits on the history and evolution of the automobile industry.

The highlight is certainly its full scale replica of a 1927 filling station designed by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright himself.

6. Albright-Knox Art Gallery

Home to an astounding array of impressive artworks, the excellent Albright-Knox Art Gallery can be found just ten minutes drive north of the center. Popular with locals and tourists alike, its endless art-filled galleries lie at the western end of Delaware Park amid lush grounds and gardens.

One of the oldest public arts institutions in the country, it was established in 1862 with its huge collection now occupying a massive and majestic Greek Revival-style building. In total, it displays over 6,500 works with everything from abstract expressionism and pop art to cubist, surrealist, and post-impressionist styles on show.

Aside from seeing masterpieces by big names such as Picasso, Monet and van Gogh among others, visitors can also stroll about the dozens of stupendous sculptures that dot its lawns outside.

5. Buffalo Zoo

At the other end of Delaware Park you can find the magnificent Buffalo Zoo, which has long been one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions. Opened in 1875, it contains all kinds of incredible animals with everything from rhinos and tigers to sloths, sea lions, and spectacled bears on show.

A firm favorite with families, its spacious enclosures and educational exhibits contain over a thousand mammals and birds, reptiles, and amphibians. You’ll learn all about the animals’ natural habitats and behavior in the wild through informative displays and zookeeper demonstrations.

Besides scenic sections, such as Rainforest Falls and Otter Creek, the nation’s third-oldest zoo also offers amazing animal encounters where you can meet, feed and photograph your favorite furry friend.

4. Buffalo City Hall

Exhibiting exquisite Art Deco-style architecture, the breathtaking Buffalo City Hall rises dramatically above downtown far below. The city’s standout symbol and sight, it is a treat to tour around with beautiful features to be found both inside and out.

One of the largest and tallest municipal buildings in the States, it was erected in 1931 and towers to a staggering 396 feet in height. Its enormous exterior’s geometric design and decorative statues and friezes make for a striking sight, while its interior also boasts refined council chambers and a gorgeous stained-glass window ceiling.

In addition to visiting the mayor’s office and seeing some of the fine features that coat its thirty-two floors, guests can venture out onto its observation deck that offers divine views of the city with Niagara Falls to be spotted far off in the distance.

3. Buffalo & Erie County Naval and Military Park

Lying on the shores of Lake Erie, the brilliant Buffalo & Erie County Naval and Military Park can be found just a short stroll from the center. Besides decommissioned US Naval vessels, the museum has interesting artifacts and exhibits for you to explore on the history of the American Navy.

First opened to the public in 1979, it now contains a captivating collection of vessels, vehicles, and aircraft with uniforms and equipment, medals, and military memorabilia on show. While its displays are very well done, the highlight is of course exploring its former Naval vessels that include the USS Little Rock, the USS The Sullivans and the USS Croaker.

On top of wandering about the inside of the cruiser, destroyer and submarine, guests can visit its moving Monuments Garden with an awesome Maritime Simulator experience also on offer.

2. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Martin House

To the east of Delaware Park is yet another of Buffalo’s must-see tourist attractions: the marvelous Martin House. Designed by the world-famous Frank Lloyd Wright, the complex showcases some stunning Prairie School architecture and is regularly ranked among his most important and impressive works.

Built between 1902 and 1905, Martin House is undoubtedly the complex’s standout sight due to its unusually large size, open plan layout and its intricate details and design. Named after businessman Darwin Martin who commissioned the whole project, it is connected to various other buildings on the property, such as a conservatory, carriage house, and gardener’s cottage.

Now a National Historic Landmark, the complex is lovely to tour around with arresting architecture, fabulous furnishing, and gorgeous gardens wherever you go.

1. Niagara Falls

One of the Earth’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders, Niagara Falls lies just half an hour’s drive to the north of Buffalo. Straddling the border between Canada and the US, it makes for one of the most spectacular sights imaginable. Phenomenal views, photos and boat trips can all be enjoyed at the wonderful waterfall.

Impressively stretching over 3,200 feet in length, the famous fall is actually made up of three different ones, the largest of which is Horseshoe Falls. Next to it you can see both American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls with the humongous waterfall reaching up to 165 feet in height at its highest point.

Due to its staggering size and scale, Niagara Falls is not to be missed when in town. Its endless wall of water makes for some fantastic photos with unforgettable boat trips to be had at the foot of the falls.

When planning a road trip to a fun-filled U.S. destination, Buffalo, New York, may not be the first location that comes to mind. Trust me, I often planned a trip to Niagara, spending the night in Seneca Casino and shopping at Niagara Outlet Mall. I’d pop over to Buffalo for “Buffalo Wings,” think there was nothing else to do there and leave. But don’t let its industrial image of smokestacks and steel fool you. It’s often called “the city of good neighbours,” and for good reason. From the moment I arrived, I was blown away by the welcoming atmosphere and the wide assortment of activities and attractions to explore.

The city is not just about Buffalo Wings (though, let’s be honest, they’re legendary). Buffalo offers something for everyone, whether you’re craving a solo adventure, a romantic escape, or a family fun-filled weekend.

Are you ready to start planning for your next getaway? In this guide, you will learn about the best things to do in Buffalo, NY, including my recommendations on where to stay, the best restaurants and all the best places to visit during your trip.

History of Buffalo, NY

Built between 1817 and 1825, the original Erie Canal stretched approximately 585 km (363 miles) from Albany to Buffalo, NY. This allowed a direct route between New York City and the Midwest, boosting immigration, commercial development, and agricultural development.
The first machine-powered grain elevator, the Dart’s Elevator, was built in Buffalo in 1842. It was steam-powered and featured buckets that moved along a conveyor belt to transfer the grain.
As other grain elevators were built in the area, it became the largest grain shipping port worldwide. This earned Buffalo the title “City of Grain Elevators.”
The first long-distance electrical power transmission was on November 15, 1896, making Buffalo the first city to have electricity.
Thanks to Nikola Tesla, who introduced electricity in the area, streetlights powered by the Niagara Falls Power Company earned Buffalo the nickname “City of Light.”
Buffalo was home to the original Hotel Statler. Opening in 1907, it was the first hotel in the United States to offer a private bath in each room. It closed in 1967 and was demolished in 1968.

How to Get to Buffalo

Before I get into my recommendations for things to do in Buffalo, let’s look at the different ways to get to the city from Toronto. Here are 4 popular options, depending on your budget, time frame, and preferred way to travel:

If you want to take a road trip, the drive from Toronto to Buffalo is certainly feasible, whether for a day trip or a weekend getaway. The journey along Queen Elizabeth Way and ON-403 W is 160 km and will take approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes. But this time estimate refers just to drive time and doesn’t account for any delays you may experience when crossing the Canada-U.S. border.

Whether you don’t have access to a vehicle or simply want to enjoy a trip without having to drive, the bus is a cost-effective option. Greyhound offers routes from Toronto’s Union Station Bus Terminal to Buffalo Metropolitan Transportation Center starting at just $37 USD.

Train travel is easily one of the most relaxing and scenic travel methods. However, the train ride from Toronto to Buffalo is a little more expensive than the bus and will require transfers. A round-trip ticket from Toronto to Buffalow with VIA Rail /Amtrack will cost approximately $195 CAD for a single adult passenger. This will take you from Toronto Union Station to a connection at the Canada-U.S. border, where you will transfer to a train operated by Amtrak for the remainder of your trip.

Another option that will reduce the cost while still allowing you to enjoy train travel would be to drive to Niagara Falls, ON, where you can catch the Amtrack to Buffalo Exchange St. Train Station at approximately $41 USD for a round-trip.

The cost to fly from Toronto to Buffalo will be higher than the other options, although the length of the flight and price will vary considerably depending on the airline you choose and your preferred flight time. An average flight from Toronto Pearson Airport to Buffalo Niagara International Airport will take 4-5 hours.

This historic landmark opened its doors in 1904 under the name The Lafayette Hotel. Since then, it has offered a luxury experience to its visitors, even being described by the National Press as “one of the most perfectly appointed and magnificent hotels in the century.” The hotel was designed by America’s first female architect, Louise Blanchard Bethune, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.

Curtiss Hotel

Another location listed on the National Register of Historic Places is the Curtis Hotel building, originally built in 1912-1913. At the time, the Harlow C. Curtiss Building was designed for office use, with its first tenants including the Kittinger Furniture Company, lawyers, and paramedical companies.

The building changed hands several times before being purchased and renovated into the Curtiss Hotel in 2017. In addition to the 68-room luxury boutique hotel, it also offers an upscale restaurant with year-round patio seating, the Harlow Spa, and an all-weather Urban Hot Springs experience.

The Richardson Hotel

Located on over 40 acres of beautiful historic green space, The Richardson Hotel is a sight to be seen. The property’s grounds were designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, best known for designing Central Park in New York. This is the hotel I stayed at during my weekend stay.

The building was initially part of the Richardson Olmstead Campus, serving as the Buffalo State Asylum for the Insane in 1880. The property was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1986. Since then, any construction or updates on the property have been focused on maintaining a balance of historical restoration and modern amenities. The result is a unique hotel experience and aesthetic.

The menu changes periodically to showcase seasonal ingredients in their food and creative specialty cocktails. This is a great place to stop any time of day, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner options.

In addition to a contemporary dinner menu, they also have an impressive gin list with options from all over the world, including Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Ireland, and South Africa.

Learn About the History of Jazz at the Colored Musicians Club & Jazz Museum

One of the important local cultural elements you may be interested in exploring is jazz history, both in the area and in the greater music community.

Buffalo Musician’s Union, Local 533, was formed on February 3, 1917, as a response to the existing union not accepting African American musicians. The union headquarters would move around several times before moving into a vacant storefront at 145 Broadway in 1934. In addition to union meetings, the upstairs provided much-needed space for practice, rehearsals, and performances. The property was granted historic landmark status in 1979 and designated a historical preservation site in 1999.

The Colored Musicians Club & Jazz Museum is the US’s only continuously running all-Black-owned music venue. It is currently undergoing a $2.95 million renovation and expansion, adding over 2000 square feet to the existing building. This will provide new rehearsal and event spaces for local musicians while the museum and the club/bar/stage remain in the existing space.

If you are in Buffalo for the last weekend in July, you may also wish to attend the Queen City Jazz Festival , a free yearly festival hosted by the Colored Musicians Club & Jazz Museum. This festival brings together musicians and music lovers for live music and a celebration of the art of jazz.

Enjoy Dinner and a Show with Live Jazz Performances

Another excellent opportunity for music lovers visiting the area is the many bars and restaurants that offer live jazz performances. Whether you’re interested in enjoying dinner and a meal or just grabbing a cold drink while you relax and take in the music, options are available.

The Terrace at Delaware Park is an upscale restaurant with a stunning city view, including the Buffalo History Museum, Albright Knox Art Gallery, Delaware Park, and Hoyt Lake. The restaurant offers an incredible menu with options for any taste or dietary preference, but they are best known for their Sunday Jazz Brunch.

For those who prefer a more casual vibe, Duende is a great place to enjoy dinner, drinks, and live jazz music. Located in Silo City, a newer area of the city where old, unused grain silos are being repurposed in creative ways, it truly embodies the soul of Buffalo.

Get Your Caffeine Fix at a Local Café

Are you the type of person who needs your morning coffee to get up and go daily? If so, you’re not alone! Starting your day with a well-made cup of coffee isn’t difficult, thanks to the availability of high-quality cafés throughout the city.

Tipico Coffee is a great place to grab breakfast, offering many delicious options such as breakfast empanadas or breakfast sandwiches. While the food is tasty, they specialize in premium and exotic coffees – that’s easy to see! Their roasting operations are just blocks away from the café, allowing them to easily provide the freshest, best-tasting coffee selections.

Another stop that I highly recommend is Remedy House , an all-day coffee bar with breakfast or lunch options, freshly roasted coffee, and a limited wine and beer menu. This is the perfect way to break up a busy day of sightseeing and exploring.

If you are staying at The Richardson Hotel, don’t miss the chance to check out the Café Calvert . This on-site café is not only convenient for those staying in the hotel but also for anyone in the general area with their walk-up outdoor order window. Choose from their specialty coffee and tea blends, freshly made bread, bagels, scones, and other pastries.

Go Shopping at the Elmwood Village Farmer’s Market

Every Saturday, from May 7 th to the end of November, you will have the opportunity to shop at the Elmwood Village Farmers Market . Many local vendors come together to sell fresh produce, fruits, baked goods, and more. While there, I purchased pop-tarts from a local business called Butter Block. They have a location in town but also set up a pop-up shop at the market. They were delicious, and I highly recommend them if you are searching for a sweet treat!

Spend Time in Beautiful Delaware Park

If you’re searching for activities in Buffalo, NY, that you can enjoy outdoors, basking in the sunshine and fresh air, make sure you add Delaware Park to your list of places to visit. Delaware Park is the largest of Buffalo’s original parks, covering 350 acres and featuring walking paths, a quarry garden, unique structures like the Spire Head House, and beautiful Hoyt Lake.

This is the perfect location to enjoy a family picnic, let the children (or the dogs) stretch their legs on the walking trails, or explore the area by water with rowboat and FLOATmingo paddle boat rentals. You can also take a gondola tour of Hoyt Lake and the Japanese Gardens.

Immerse Yourself in the City’s History at the Buffalo History Museum

Another one of the key places to visit in Buffalo, New York, for history lovers is the Buffalo History Museum . Here, you can truly experience the history of Buffalo and Erie County through a wide assortment of exhibits, including hands-on activities (many child-friendly), interactive displays, and one-of-a-kind artifacts. Admission is by donation, but the recommended amount is $10 USD per person.

Boasting nearly 50 craft breweries in the area , Buffalo has made a name for itself in the craft beer world. This makes it a great place to visit both for craft brew enthusiasts as well as those of us who simply want to enjoy a cold beer with friends or family.

First opening its doors in 2014, Big Ditch Brewing has grown to earn the title of Buffalo’s largest brewery. The name is a nod to the area’s history, referencing the fact that the Erie Canal, when first presented, was jokingly called “Clinton’s Big Ditch.” They offer a mix of popular beers and limited-time experimental brews.

Combining a fun and welcoming atmosphere with a desire to share their love of craft beer, Resurgence Brewing Company is a great addition to the craft beer community in Buffalo. They encourage visitors to “experience beer” both in their beer garden and taproom. If you are there on a Saturday, book a spot in one of their weekly brewery tours to learn more about the brewery’s history and the brewing process.

Another community-focused brewery in the city is Community Beer Works . With events like karaoke and live music performances on their calendar, they are sure to offer a fun and lively experience for those searching for that kind of atmosphere. The location includes a tasting room, a full restaurant, and front and back patios. In addition to creating community within their brewery, they also play a key part in the local community by donating a portion of their profits to local charities and organizations.

Are you travelling with a furry friend? Fattey Beer Company is a dog-friendly brewery featuring a bottle shop and tap room. Enjoy their vast drink menu, including craft beer, wine, cider, seltzer, soda, and various non-alcoholic drinks. If you want to make your trip memorable, consider pairing your drink with their world-famous chicken sandwich.

Visit a Local Watering Hole

If craft beer isn’t your drink of choice, there are plenty of other places in the city where you can grab a drink. These bars and pubs offer a variety of different atmospheres, depending on what makes you most comfortable.

Are you a whiskey drinker? If so, Lucky Day is one of the must-see places to visit in Buffalo, New York, that needs to make your list! Here, you will have your choice of over 500 options on their whiskey list, ensuring that even the biggest whiskey lovers will find something new to try. Stepping into the bar, the décor will leave you feeling like you are stepping back in time. Pay attention to the artwork and décor for some added fun – there are hidden jokes in many paintings.

Another great place to get in touch with the area’s history is The Place , one of the oldest taverns in Buffalo. The building itself was constructed in the late 1870s. While the tavern has been open in this location since the 1940s, it did close for a short time in 2015 for a major remodel while maintaining that classic neighbourhood tavern feel.

Finally, one of my favourite bars in Buffalo is Ballyhoo . This is a great place to grab a cold beer or one of their signature Jam Session cocktails. Located across the road from the General Mills factory, you can often catch a whiff of Cheerios in the air. My friend Drew from Visit Buffalo Niagara recommends trying the ice cream sandwich, and I can say, from first-hand experience, that you will not be disappointed!

Embrace Your Love of the Arts by Visiting the Buffalo AKG Art Museum & Burchfield Penney Art Center

Thanks to these two incredible locations, art lovers will have a great time visiting Buffalo.

The Buffalo AKG Art Museum is one of the oldest public art museums in the United States. Founded in 1862 as the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy, it was designed as a hub of artistic and creative energies, encouraging a love and respect for the arts in the local community across the U.S. and worldwide. The collection continues to grow today, offering a remarkable experience for all who visit. Tickets cost $18 USD for adults, $16 USD for seniors and college students, and $10 USD for youth. Children 5 and under can visit for free.

I was lucky to get a sneak peek at the art museum’s new addition during my visit.

The second art-focused attraction to mention is the Burchfield Penney Art Center . Launched in 1966, the museum is dedicated to the work of renowned painter Charles E. Burchfield and other talented artists in the region. Browse the incredible collection of works on display or attend one of the museum’s events, like the monthly open studio, where visitors are invited to experiment with new themes and art materials, exploring their artistic side. Tickets cost $10 USD for adults, $8 USD for seniors (62 and older), and $5 USD for students (with ID). Children 10 and under can visit for free.

Enjoy an Incredible Live Performance at Shea’s Performing Arts Center and the Buffalo Theatre District

Another one of the great attractions in Buffalo, New York, for lovers of the arts, is the Buffalo Theatre District. Here, you will find a collection of movie theatres and live theatre venues dedicated to celebrating and showcasing the performing arts.

Shea’s Performing Arts Center includes three theatres: Shea’s Buffalo Theatre, Shea’s Smith Theatre, and Shea’s 710 Theatre. Each theatre is dedicated to a different style or subset of the theatre world. For example, the performances at Shea’s Buffalo Theatre are all centred around the historical creativity of stage vaudeville shows. The location has hosted many famous performers, including Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, George Burns, and the Marx Brothers.

Visit the Buffalo Naval & Military Park

For those who love learning about military history, the Buffalo Naval & Military Park is a must-see attraction. Open seasonally from late March to November, the historic museum is one of the largest inland Naval Parks in the United States, including 4 decommissioned Naval vessels – USS Croaker, USS Little Rock, USS The Sullivans, and PTF-17.

You can take a self-guided tour of the museum building and the grounds or plan to take a guided tour with a knowledgeable tour guide. Tickets for a self-guided tour cost $20 USD for adults, $17 USD for seniors (65+), and $14 USD for youth (5-17). Children four and under can visit for free.

Take a Tasty Tour on the Buffalo Wing Trail

If you have never heard of the Buffalo Wing Trail , there is no better time than the present. As the name suggests, the Buffalo wing was invented in Buffalo, NY. It all began at the Anchor Bar in 1964 when the famous sauce was created by blending Frank’s Red Hot and natural butter with paprika. Today, you can celebrate your love of the food by touring 14 pubs and taverns in the city known for making the best wings. Of the incredible locations included on the trail, there were two that I enjoyed during my visit and wanted to highlight:

Located in historic Allentown, you will find Gabriel’s Gate , otherwise called “The Gate” or “Gabe’s” by the locals. Operating for 50 years, the restaurant has earned a well-deserved reputation as a staple in the area. The aesthetic is a fun blend of the past and modern creativity, with elements like the antique tin ceiling, a large chandelier, and wood accents. Wings can be ordered in a wide range of flavours and heat levels, including the “suicide” heat, reserved for only the biggest thrill seekers.

The other stop on the Buffalo Wing Trail that caught my attention was Gene McCarthy’s . In addition to some of the best chicken wings in the city, the menu also features other pub-style favourites, including street tacos, fish and chips, and smoked pulled pork sandwiches. This is also the site of Old First Ward Brewing Company, one of the 50+ breweries in the city.

Head Out on a Nightcap Sail Aboard the Spirit of Buffalo

Unlike many other Buffalo tourist attractions on this list, a Nightcap Sail aboard the Spirit of Buffalo is just for adults. Enjoy the sunset and view Buffalo from the water with this relaxing evening cruise. The Nightcap Sail is a 1.5-hour cruise on Lake Erie at 8:30 PM with a nightcap beverage in hand. Tickets are $37 USD and can be booked online to reserve your seat. Does a nightcap sail not fit your schedule? Spirit of Buffalo also offers a Day Sail that may be a better fit.

Tour the Frank Lloyd Wright’s Martin House

Built between 1902 and 1905 for businessman Darwin D. Martin and his family, the Martin House is a beautiful example of nature-inspired architecture. In 1992, the property was restored and converted into a public historic house museum. Visitors can view the beautiful design elements, including art glass, light fixtures, and Wright-designed furniture.

There are several different tours to choose from, depending on your budget and which parts of the property you wish to see. The standard Martin House Tour lasts approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. Tickets cost $25 USD for adults, $23 USD for seniors, and $10 USD for students. Children 8 and under can attend a tour for free. However, if you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, you can take an exterior self-guided audio mobile tour for $15 USD.

Enjoy Fresh Baked Treats, Jams, and Other Locally Sourced Goods at Five Points Bakery

Like a farmer’s market, the Five Points Bakery provides an excellent opportunity to enjoy fresh baked goods and locally sourced items like honey, milk, eggs, wheat, and more. You can dine in, enjoying a selection of tasty items from the full café menu, or purchase high-quality items sourced from local farmers to take home. If you are searching for a good breakfast spot, they offer an assortment of dressed-up toast plates that are a perfect way to start your day.

Enjoy the City’s Unique Architecture

When visiting a city as rooted in its history as Buffalo, it can often be seen in the local architecture – a fact that certainly rings true here. You can walk through the city and enjoy the beauty of these buildings yourself or take a guided architecture tour to learn more about the various buildings and how they tie into the city’s history. These are also great locations for selfies and family photos. A few buildings I recommend checking out include:

Buffalo City Hall: This historic city hall was built and dedicated in the early 1930s. Experts believe the style of this building inspired the style and design of the rest of the city.
Connecticut Street Armoury: Built in 1899, this large castle-like building was constructed entirely from Medina sandstone. In 1995, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
Guaranty Building & Interpretive Center: Built between 1895 and 1896, this early skyscraper features a complete terra cotta exterior, giving it a unique appearance.
Hotel at the Lafayette, Trademark Collection by Wyndham: The first official female architect in the United States, Louise Blanchard Bethune, designed this building.

Rich in history , architecture, and natural beauty, Buffalo is the perfect destination for any traveler looking to expand their intellectual horizons. With landmarks including one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s most notorious architectural workings and the historic Forest Lawn cemetery, you’ll never run out of places to go, things to see, or history to uncover. While a week-long vacation would be ideal to see all the sites that this historic city has to offer, here’s the fast-track version...a weekend itinerary of the must-sees and must-dos across Buffalo.

5 pm: When you arrive in Buffalo, put your bags down and head to Delaware Park to sit among beautiful scenery and watch the sun slowly lower from the sky. Decompress from your travels and soak in some fresh air before dinner!

8:30 pm: Celebrate the end of the week and the beginning of a beautiful weekend rendezvous with a nice, relaxing sit-down dinner at The Left Bank —slated as one of the best restaurants in Buffalo according to TripAdvisor .

9 am: Grab breakfast at Five Points Bakery , a Buffalo staple. Have a freshly baked bagel or egg and cheese sandwich—then grab a snack for later so you can spend the day exploring!

10 am: You can’t miss the Frank Lloyd Wright’s Darwin D. Martin House Complex . Built between 1903 and 1905, the complex is considered to be one of the most important projects from Wright’s Prairie School era, ranking among the Guggenheim in Manhattan and Fallingwater. If Mick Jagger made a point to check it out after playing a concert at Ralph Wilson Stadium recently... you should probably check it out, too.

12 pm: Spend the afternoon with American legends like President Millard Fillmore at Forest Lawn Cemetery , one of the country's premier historic cemeteries. Make sure to take a walking or trolley tour to really grasp the full history that lies among the rolling greens.

3 pm: Continue your journey into American history at the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site , where Teddy Roosevelt was inaugurated as the 26th president of the U.S. Learn all about his path to greatness.

5 pm: Enjoy the tastes of Buffalo with the Buffalo Bites Food Tour . Combine tasty food and drink in some of Buffalo’s tastiest neighborhoods on a three-hour guided walking tour around the city. Consider it a multi-course dinner with ever-shifting views of exquisite Buffalo architecture!

8 pm: Cap off your busy day of exploration with a relaxing sunset Buffalo Harbor Cruise . Capture the city skyline and picturesque sunset and post to Instagram using #ILoveNYSunsets!

12 pm: Spend an hour or two exploring the Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park . With ships like the Destroyer USS The Sullivans and submarine USS Croaker, the naval cove is rich in military history.

2 pm: Head to Larkin Square for lunch, live music, and local shopping. It’s the hopping city center that will make you want to stay in Buffalo forever!

The Richardson Hotel: Historic Charm and Historic Architects

The Richardson Hotel , and the adjacent Hotel Henry Urban Resort Conference Center are both housed on the historic grounds of an asylum campus designed by world-renowned architect, Frederick Law Olmstead. The building of the Richardson Hotel was designed by famed architect H.H. Richardson himself, and the hotel has preserved the essence of the castle-like building's beautiful facade.

The grounds are designated as a National Landmark, and the rooms are designed with a mix of industrial elements and Victorian touches. Hotels with the same history and amenities as the Richardson could easily cost twice as much in any other major city in the U.S., making its Buffalo price tag an absolute steal.

What to do: a thriving arts, culture, & food scene, a haven for bibliophiles, food fanatics, and art and history lovers.

Every New Yorker should take the trip from the city to Buffalo , and I might be as bold as to say that everyone should put Buffalo on their list of places to visit. There are so many things to do in the city, and with the weather warming up, it's clear that Buffalonians and travelers alike are eager to be out and about experiencing the city.

Harkening back to its days of culture-making and taste-making, Buffalo is a vibrant community of people, organizations, and businesses providing experiences you'll never forget.

Where To Eat

Buffalo's melting pot of diverse culture is most evident in the city's blossoming food scene. I regretted not staying in Buffalo longer because I couldn't possibly try as many of the restaurants as I wanted, but the two dinner spots I chose were excellent examples of how Buffalo's food scene is redefining the landscape of American food.

Southern Junction is a local BBQ joint with lots of flavor that combines traditional Southern BBQ cooking with the taste and flavors of South Asian influences (like a Barbacurry beef shoulder or a Brisket Biryiani). For a full experience, dine here on the weekdays, and for a curated brunch menu, stop by Southern Junction on a Sunday afternoon.

For a true "hometown" feel and menu, I headed to the Gypsy Parlor , a combination dive bar, witch's salon, and Victorian restaurant. I went with a friend local to the area, and she was ecstatic to see upstate New York's celebrated "Garbage Plate" on the menu. Of course, we ordered it, and my friend's assessment was that it was a delicious, more elevated take on a local favorite.

Don't let the use of the word "elevated" lead you astray though; the atmosphere was approachable, intimate, and so very friendly! The Gypsy Restaurant is locally famous for its open-mic nights and "dead disco" parties.

Where To Explore

Buffalo is famous for its bibliophile population and art-loving community members. These independent bookstores are absolute must-stops for anyone part of the literary community, and my personal favorite I was able to visit on my trip was Burning Books , incidentally right down the road from Southern Junction.

Filled with thought-provoking titles that speak to the here-and-now representing a large cross-section of diverse authors, it was a book lover's dream!

Art lovers are also in for a major treat. The newly re-opened and re-minted Buffalo AKG Art Museum opened its doors to a new building, completely revamped exhibitions, and an elegant new restaurant called Cornelia's in 2023. Since then, the museum has worked steadily on major community initiatives to promote local visitation and presence in their buildings.

The collection spans from Impressionist masters to modern sculpture to Gilded Age portraits to contemporary greats; the AKG houses stellar examples of some of the world's and Buffalo's greats. In a particularly emotional display of local solidarity, the AKG mounted "Before and After Again," an exhibition housed in their M&T Bank Gallery.

A show responding to the tragic, fatal shootings in the city in 2022, the exhibit encourages dialogue about community, relationships, and (in)equality. It features artwork, both visual and written, by local Buffalo artists in a powerful and poignant show of both resilience and sadness.

Buffalo's diverse offerings — from food to art — absolutely blew me away on my visit. The city is home to world-class museums and businesses with incredible heart and a visit to support Buffalo's community will be a meaningful experience. Come for affordable traveling, stay for the people and fantastic experiences!

Keith McNally's flagship restaurant—this is also the master behind such atmospheric Manhattan mainstays as Pastis, the Odeon, Minetta Tavern, and Morandi, each also worth a visit if I may suggest a “Keith McNally crawl”—is a high-ceilinged, brasserie-inspired scene to end all scenes. Martinis are omnipresent at the bar and in deep red-leather booths. So are steak frites smothered in peppercorn sauce. But the asset that's fabulous with the greatest diversity are the patrons—like if that New York magazine cover all convened to share a meal. Alison Roman once told Interview : “The food is so bad, it’s too expensive, I love going there.” She's being facetious for comedic effect—the food is just fine, but it is true that you're really going there to go there. With your expectations duly measured, enjoy an uncomplicated onion soup gratine and some yummy, well-buttered escargot for starters before moving on to the steak frites main event. For dessert, there's nowhere worth going more than the perfect profiteroles, poured with warm chocolate sauce tableside.

Arthur Avenue

Almost every awning along the stretch of The Bronx's Arthur Avenue between D'Auria-Murphy Triangle and Ciccarone Park marks an Italian name possessing something—a pizzeria, a restaurant, a bakery. But just because it's all Italian, all the time along these two blocks doesn't mean all aren't welcome to come and patronize these establishments. It's some of the absolute best Italian food in New York City lined up for your convenience, bustling with life and good eats. Executive editor Erin Florio's relatives still do their Sunday shopping in the market, which she describes as "dusty but great." Poking around and picking a few things up there is really where it's at—bright seasonal produce, sausages of all stripes dangling from the ceiling, fresh-baked bread and vinegar-y imports from the old country line the walls in cans and jars. It's true one-stop shopping.

This is the last independent, nonprofit cinema in New York City. Little has changed about this humble, unpretentious theater since it first opened in 1970 as a screening space for independent films—there's the big marquee outside, lighting up an otherwise quiet stretch of West Houston; a ticket booth with microphone and glass partition; and a red carpet underfoot. It's retro without feeling dated, a warm place out of time. Behind the concessions counter, by the way, are some very nice people selling some very good espresso and baked goods (try the cakes carrot and orange bundt) in addition to regular sodas and candies. From new and obscure cinema made outside the US to a dazzling assortment of global classics that has most recently included Midnight Cowboy and Le Samourai , you can rest assured that every last thing on the marquee is worth a few hours of your time.

To get that Nora Ephron New York experience, you have no choice but to take a stroll through Central Park while in the city. As you step off the crowded sidewalks of 59th Street into a mass of green, you’ll hardly realize what lies before you: 693 acres of man-made gardens, meadows, forests, and hillsides. After surfacing from the steps of the Canal Street subway station onto the sidewalk, meandering past thick crowds, neon light shops, and vendors peddling fake designer bags, you’ll find yourself in the narrow streets of Chinatown, where there are bright heaps of produce, succulent ducks hanging in windows, and restaurants old and new. Touching Tribeca, SoHo, Little Italy, and the Lower East Side, Chinatown has a rich history and began being populated by Chinese immigrants as early as the 1850s. You can visit in whichever way makes sense for you. This intimate, meditative museum in Long Island City was conceived and built by Isamu Noguchi himself. Here, his mostly abstract sculptures and often-copied paper lamps are displayed across two levels of exhibition space and throughout a quiet, ivy-covered walled garden. Even if you're not familiar with Noguchi's work, you've probably come across one of his Akari light sculptures—geometric or globular lamps made of washi paper and bamboo that glow softly from within—which have become something of a modern design trope since he started designing them in the early 1950s.

A spring or summer day spent cheering at an NYC ballpark is a classic activity for a reason. Located in the Bronx, Yankee Stadium is the home field of New York’s 27-time World Champions. It’s a half-hour subway ride from Penn Station and approximately a 20-minute subway ride from Grand Central Terminal, making it easily accessible from Manhattan. It replaced the 1923 original in 2009 and cost $1.5 billion to build, making it one of the world’s most expensive stadiums. It seats 50,287 fans. New York Yankees games, obviously, are the main event here, but you can also attend concerts, college football, and soccer matches.

Jewish Brooklyn: Tours of Hasidic Brooklyn Arrow

The pockets of Brooklyn inhabited predominately by the Hasidic are not often explored on the average Big Apple itinerary. There are two guided tours you can take of Hasidic Brooklyn: Frieda Vizel's of conservative Williamsburg and the Friedman family's of the slightly-more-flexible Crown Heights (none yet open us to the cosmopolitan Borough Park.) The former rendezvouses in the bus plaza just below the Williamsburg Bridge, the latter around the dining room table of a family home. From there, you're off to the races learning from people who know and love their subject deeply. You'll also sample kosher sweets and stop at the deli, dip into a toy store or wigmaker, and meet quite a few friendly faces. Both are excellent ways to immerse yourself, for a few hours, in the culture of some of Brooklyn’s more enigmatic inhabitants.

The Cathedral of St. John the Divine on 112th and Amsterdam in Upper Manhattan’s Morningside Heights is the largest cathedral in the world and the sixth-largest church by area. Hundreds of thousands of visitors walk through these doors annually for a reason. The cathedral itself—and its remarkable Gothic architecture, story-telling stained glass windows, and 17th century tapestries—is already worth visiting. But there is artwork that is especially meaningful to New York City here as well, including Keith Haring's white gold and bronze altarpiece and a 9/11 memorial sculpture by Meredith Bergmann, which holds debris of the towers in it. The cathedral holds daily and Sunday worship services, which welcome all. There is no charge to pray, meditate, or contemplate in the cathedral. Visitors who show for sightseeing purposes can enter for $5 admission. Special tours are offered depending on the day of the week.

Staten Island Ferry

One of the first things associate editor Hannah Towey did when she moved to New York City was board the (free! bright orange!) Staten Island Ferry by Battery Park at Manhattan's bottom, watch the sunset over the water on her way to that far-flung borough, and then turn around and get right back on for the return to Manhattan. Forget the outrageously expensive Statue of Liberty cruises and the discomfort of the official ferry (although Ellis Island, unfortunately the next stop on the same trip, is worth a visit)—here you see plenty of Lady Liberty, Governor's Island, and the skyline without opening your purse. It's a dreamy 25 minutes each way, passed easily watching the myriad terns dip into the ship's wake. This is not to say you shouldn't spend a few hours on Staten Island if you have the time—the Botanical Garden is as gorgeous as it is free, and the food is impeccable with abundant Sri Lankan options (try New Asha, although you can't go wrong anywhere) and excellent Italian at Enoteca Maria for nonnas and their appreciators.

The Morgan is like a multi-hyphenate millennial—only instead of actress/model/influencer/whatever, it’s museum/library/landmark/historic site/music venue. Inside the multimillionaire’s personal library, expanded into a must-see museum and cultural space, you'll find rare artifacts, paintings, and books, some dating back to 4000 B.C. that are worth more than your house. In particular the museum is home to one of 23 copies of the original Declaration of Independence; Mozart's handwritten score of the Haffner Symphony; the collected works of African American poet Phillis Wheatley; the only extant manuscript of Milton's Paradise Lost ; and Charles Dickens’s manuscript of A Christmas Carol . Swoon.

MoMA PS1 Arrow

The sister institution to MoMA is no ordinary art museum. Located in a striking Renaissance Revival former public school building in Long Island City, Queens, MoMA PS1’s setting is just as interesting as its collection. All manner of cutting-edge contemporary art is shown here, with a collection over 200,000 pieces strong, from the likes of James Turrell and Ai Weiwei. The people-watching can be just as good as the art, as creative types from around the city come here to find inspiration.

For locals and first-time visitors alike, seeing a Broadway show is a special experience, and one that is exclusive to New York City. Times Square is ordinarily a drag, but when you’re moseying into Midtown Manhattan for a show the bright billboards and lights don’t flash in your face—they dazzle in your eyes. A Broadway show's costumes, sets, songs, and stories are the stuff of dreams. Shows that could very well run forever include Wicked, The Book of Mormon, and Hamilton , but there's also an ever-rotating selection of revivals and debuts worth checking out. And that's not to mention the more daring fare happening downtown at theaters like the Public, Off-Broadway.

At Bemelmans, Ludwig Bemelman's illustrations—you might remember them from the Madeline books—adorn the walls. In one panel, a bunny smokes a cigar in Central Park ; in another, a man hands a boy a clutch of balloons. This is a bar where gawking is permissible. The cocktails here very much depend on who’s making them: an Old Fashioned might be a bit watery, a whiskey sour too tart. But often a dirty gin Martini is just perfectly executed. Everything is expensive—it’s clear why you’re here—so take the edge off that sensation by digging into the free, hearty snacks that float your way.

The New York Botanical Garden has carefully manicured flower gardens, lush fields, winding hikes, and impeccable greenhouses. There are spaces that feel deeply intimate, as if you're truly separated from the world, and there are vast expanses where it's hard to believe you're still in the Bronx . In winter, the greenhouses host an annual train show recreating all of New York City in miniature; the warmer months bring every floral delight imaginable, from cherry trees to peonies. Plan to spend at least half a day here and pack a picnic.

Brooklyn Heights Promenade

It’s one thing to be in the midst of Manhattan, on the ground; it’s quite another to look upon it from across the river. In Brooklyn Heights, a couple subway stops away from lower Manhattan, the city’s image looms large before you. Arguably the best view of the skyline in the city, the Brooklyn Heights promenade hovers above the Brooklyn-Queen Expressway. Underlying the peaceful, tree-lined walkway, traffic rumbles below. The promenade stretches from Remsen Street at the south end to Middagh Street at the north. Around the corner, pedestrians can discretely cross a basketball court to access a suspended footbridge that zigzags down to the piers of Brooklyn Bridge Park. While in the picturesque neighborhood, make stops at the New York Transit Museum, the Sardinian trattoria River Deli, and the old-time dive bar Montero.

As you enter the museum, you descend from the street to bedrock level—the foundation of the former Twin Towers—and are placed in a meditative mindset, forced to recall where you were on that fateful day. The museum itself is a masterful balance: It's grand in scale, contemplative in its construction, and personal in its execution. It pays homage to the enormity of the loss, both physical and spiritual.

The Cloisters Arrow

Located on four acres in northern Manhattan's Fort Tryon Park, the Met Cloisters is a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and is America’s only museum dedicated exclusively to the art and architecture of the Middle Ages. The building overlooks the Hudson River and actually incorporates five medieval-inspired cloisters into a modern museum structure, creating a historic, contextualized backdrop in which to view the art.

Allocate time to spend pouring over the remarkable books and objects in the famous gift shop, too—an NYC must-visit in its own right.

Apollo Theater Arrow

Countless careers have been made and stars have passed through this world famous, legendary Harlem theater—Duke Ellington, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, Diana Ross, Lauryn Hill, and D’Angelo to name a few. The venue—which began as a white-only burlesque destination until 1934, when under new ownership it began welcoming and becoming central to the Black community—has been active for 88 years, with swing, blues, jazz, R&B, and comedy acts taking the stage. Today, visitors can attend events like Amateur Night at the Apollo, one of the city’s most long-standing, fame-making live shows. Capacity is 1,500, with three levels of seating, and contrary to the way it appears on 'Showtime at the Apollo,' is intimate without much legroom.

Prospect Park Arrow

Prospect Park is in many ways the Central Park of Brooklyn; in fact, it was designed shortly after by the same team of architects, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, and has many of the same features: sprawling meadows, walking trails, and picturesque bodies of water. In feeling though, it’s more rambling and less manicured than its touristed Manhattan counterpart. Prospect Park Woodlands is Brooklyn’s last remaining forest, with 250 acres of trees, turtles, chipmunks, 200 species of birds, and other fauna and flora. There's also basketball and tennis courts, a carousel, playgrounds, zoo, and a 3.35-mile loop for runners and bikers (they’re fast —watch out!). While there, make a trip to adjacent Brooklyn Botanic Garden , particularly lovely during cherry blossom season.

Coney Island has a reputation as a circus-worthy tourist trap, which is exactly what it is. But you may be surprised by the old-timey charms of this beachfront American town. You’ll definitely be impressed by the food and drinks—Totonno's Pizza, Gargiulo's and Coney Island Brewery in particular. Locals and tourists hang out on the beach, eat ice cream cones on the promenade, and stand in line for the famed Cyclone roller coaster. The beach and boardwalk along with spots like Nathan’s are open year-round. The amusement park itself is seasonal. Events like the annual Mermaid Parade (crowded as they may be) are worth watching for the audacity and theatrics you can’t find anywhere else in the world but Coney Island.

World-renowned performing arts center Lincoln Center is always worth visiting when the opportunity arises, and in October 2022, David Geffen Hall, home to the New York Philharmonic, reopened after a major renovation that improved the venue’s acoustics and spiffed it up with a modern look. The sprawling Upper West Side complex is also home to the Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Ballet, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and Juilliard. All kinds of music, dance, theater, and films show here; some highlights from the upcoming calendar include the rapturously energetic New York Film Festival (catch the latest films long before they hit theaters, embedded in one of the reactive audiences on this Earth), the operas like The Life and Times of Malcom X and La Boheme , and ballets like The Nutcracker . Whether you’re on a special date or reconnecting with old friend when you’re in town, seeing a live performance at Lincoln Center will always make for an elegant and memorable night out.

None of the promoters on MacDougal Street shouting “stand-up comedy tonight!” are trying to get you into the Comedy Cellar, where the show is already sold out. Blockbuster stars like Jerry Seinfeld and Eddie Murphy made their names at the Cellar; if you're lucky, one may show up the night you're there. Seating is intimate and close together, and there is a two-item minimum on food or drinks. It's 21-plus and vaccine-mandatory; be prepared to surrender your phone at the door, too. There's no bad seat in the house, but sit in the front at your own risk of getting (playfully) heckled by the host or a comic.

Truly one of the world's great natural history museums, the American Museum of Natural History spans four city blocks just across from Central Park . All aspects of the natural world are represented here, from a vast collection of taxidermy mammals, to depictions of the life of Native American tribes, to an entire hall dedicated to marine life—including a life-size model of a blue whale. The crown jewel is the dinosaur floor, with an imposing Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton that dominates the room. The newest attraction comes in the form of the long-awaited Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation , which opened in May of 2023 and, among many other things, boasts a comprehensive insectarium and vivarium. Breathtaking architecture from New York-based Jeanne Gang doesn't hurt, either.

With its towering stacks, filled with more than 2.5 million titles, this 94-year-old bookstore is less neighborhood haunt and more globally recognized institution. Located in New York Harbor, only 800 yards from Manhattan and 400 yards from Brooklyn, walking onto quirky, car-free, brick-covered, 173-acre Governors Island feels like being transported to an alternate universe from the city—but in reality it's a quick, affordable ferry ride away. One-way fare is $4 and boats are serviced from Lower Manhattan’s Battery Maritime Building every day, as well as from Brooklyn Bridge Park and Atlantic Basin in Red Hook on the weekends. In the past couple of years, Governors Island has become an even more popular city destination, and has welcomed a slew of new luxury businesses. One is special in particular: Collective, the only place you can stay overnight on the island. Collective is a glamping experience, offering plush beds inside the tents, morning yoga, sunset cocktails, and iconic skyline views—Lady Liberty included, herself. Which is all to say, you’re by no means roughing it here. On the menu at their restaurant, you’ll find grilled seafood, gorgeous spreads of pastries, and more. Another luxury experience new to the island is QC NY Spa, with top-grade saunas and a skyline view-filled pool.

Elsewhere Arrow

Located in Brooklyn on a hip stretch of Bushwick’s Jefferson Avenue, Elsewhere—a vast, three-story nightclub and live music venue with multiple dance floors, stages, and a rooftop—has become one of the city’s best nightlife destinations. Spinning disco balls and kaleidoscopic lights set the scene. A somewhat recent staple in the city’s nightlife scene, Elsewhere is a converted warehouse that opened in 2017. Blocks away from similar venues like Avant Gardener and House of Yes, Elsewhere stands out for its inclusivity, its intimate vibe in spite of its size, and for lifting up smaller, up-and-coming acts.

Rockaway Beach Arrow

One of the best public beaches you can visit in New York City proper, Rockaway is a sandy, sprawling stretch of surf located in Queens on the Atlantic Ocean, complete with a 5.5-mile boardwalk of delicious concessions. A summery way to get there in style? Take the ferry from Wall Street or Sunset Park, Brooklyn, and let the wind blow through your hair as you take in the city views, sailing under the Verrazano Bridge and past Coney Island on the way. From just about everywhere else in the city, you can also get there via the A train. Each stretch has a different crowd and personality: Beach 90-106 is the busiest section, with the most food and drink options; Beaches 67-69 as well as 90-92 are the surfing zones; between Beach 153 and Beach 169 you’ll find Jacob Riis Park, which is popular with young people and is a summer gathering place for the city’s LGBTQ+ community.

Sip iced coffee in McCarren Park, catch an indie show at Baby's All Right, walk two blocks over to some of the city's most-coveted Italian at Lilia (with a month-in-advance res, of course.) This is the busiest thoroughfare in hip Williamsburg: Bedford Avenue—and the L train that feeds it—might as well be North Brooklyn’s own personal people-watching catwalk. Pedestrians with voluminous pants, dogs with miniature rain boots, and high-speed scooters will swish past you. As you make your way south from the subway station, likely en route from the East Village, you’ll pass local businesses that characterize the area, like Catbird (ethereal, vintage-inspired jewelry), Spoonbill & Sugartown Books (poetry, special design and cookbooks, cards), and Awoke Vintage (best-known for their genuine denim often from the ‘90s.)

Though many across town are trying, there's still no better way to enjoy Manhattan's cityscape than from the top of the Empire State Building. The 102-story skyscraper was the tallest building in the world for 40 years, and though it's been outgrown by dozens of projects across three other continents, it's just the classic viewing point. There are, of course, always long lines to buy tickets, but that's nothing a little planning and purchasing in advance can't solve. It's also still a functioning office building with a bustling Art Deco lobby, so the people watching on the way up is excellent.

Tenement Museum Arrow

The Lower East Side Tenement Museum is, as the name implies, a historic tenement house (two, if you want to get technical). On a tour of the tenements, you’ll hear personal histories of the working-class individuals who lived there and see how they made do with cramped quarters to build new lives in America. On a neighborhood walking tour—the other way to visit the museum—you’ll learn about the evolution of the Lower East Side and how its thriving immigrant population made it the most densely populated area in the country during the 1900s.

Industry City Arrow

This stretch of waterfront has been a hub of Brooklyn manufacturing since Irving T. Bush first developed his family's rail-marine terminal (then called Bush Terminal) in the mid-1890s to add warehouse structures. The sprawling campus that stands today in the quiet Sunset Park neighborhood is Industry City, the ripe and succulent fruit of decades' worth of redevelopment efforts. The idea here is one-stop shopping: Pick up a coffee from one proprieter and sip it while flitting through the Makers’ Guild’s wonderful artisan shops. There's also a slate of full-service restaurants and outdoor spaces—manicured lawns on-par with what you'd expect from those in a private, luxury apartment building.

Russian Turkish Baths Arrow

This is a really nice place to hang out for half a day—beneath the churning East Village, sweating it out in a no-frills den of functionality. Up a steep, nondescript stoop in that neighborhood and through a heavy door and you’re in, leaving your wallet in a safety deposit box in exchange for a locker room key and then down another stair to the subterranean saunas and steam rooms. They’ve got ‘em all here, from the red hot Russian room (where they also perform the platza venik treatment) to a more bearable Turkish, with a cold plunge and showers for in-between regulation. There’s also a bountiful food menu serving up such classics as borscht and beef stew to keep you nurtured.

If you’ve never seen a tribute act perform the songs of artists that are either too big to play in Maine or who have passed away, there’s a way to do a whole bunch of that this week in Portland.

There are also tribute shows happening in venues around the state all summer long.

Let’s start with Portland-based A Strange Day, a tribute to British alternative act The Cure, fronted by singer and guitarist Seth Warner.

The band will perform The Cure’s second album, “Seventeen Seconds,” in its entirety, along with some hits and other cuts at Portland House of Music on Thursday.

The album was released on April 18, 1980. Lead singer and guitarist Robert Smith turned 21 three days later. The single “A Forest” marked the band’s debut on the U.K. Singles Chart, where it reached the No. 31 spot. The song remains a setlist staple at The Cure’s live performances.

Warner said he put himself in the shoes of Cure fans when deciding what album to cover. “What I would like to hear from a Cure band is a dive into the specific eras that surrounded each record, and ‘Seventeen Seconds’ set the tone for the more introspective and gloomy textures and themes.” Advertisement

As for Warner’s favorite “Seventeen Seconds” tracks, he said, “I really like ‘At Night’ for its dynamic potential, and the edgy and angsty ‘M.'”

The band took its name from the track “A Strange Day” from The Cure’s 1982 album “Pornography.”

Along with Warner, the band is Pete Dugas (keys), Andrew Hodgkins (drums), Matt Kennedy (synth/sax), Kevin O’Reilly (bass), Casey Urich (trumpet) and Corey Urich.

Angel Butts, a copy editor living in Westbrook, has seen The Cure more than 100 times on three continents and at least 10 countries, including Latvia and Colombia. “They’re like breathing to me. They have this massive catalog and it spans every possible mood, I don’t know of another band with a palette like that. “Seventeen Seconds” is among her favorite of the band’s 13 studio albums.

Butts has seen The Cure play the “Seventeen Seconds” album all the way through three times. “One of those shows stands as the best show I’ve ever seen in my life. The Cure: Reflections, Nov. 27, 2011 at the Beacon Theatre in New York City.”

Butts said she and her 13-year-old daughter will be attending the A Strange Day show. “I think she’s more excited than I am.” Advertisement

Another British act that will likely never perform in Maine is The Rolling Stones. With more than 30 albums, the band achieved legendary status decades ago. Singer Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards are both 80, and the band is currently on tour and will be at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts, on Thursday.

There are still tickets left for that show, but you can save yourself hours of traffic jams and a lot of more by instead heading to Aura on Saturday to see Satisfaction: The International Rolling Stones tribute show. Or maybe you’ll see the real deal and then keep the party going here in Maine.

Satisfaction has been slinging Stones hits for over two decades and has played more than 4,000 shows. Chris LeGrand’s take on Mick Jagger is pretty convincing, and he and the band will surely be pleased to meet you.

David Bowie and Prince died within five months of each other in 2016, at the ages of 69 and 57, respectively, and their losses were felt by millions of fans around the world. Advertisement

With contributions that are impossible to quantify, both artists left behind a legacy of music that lives on through radio play, home listening and tribute shows.

Boston-based musician Eric Gould loves both artists and is the bandleader of a Prince/Bowie tribute coming to Portland on Saturday. The band is a revolving lineup of players from all over the country.

Gould plays bass and designs the setlists. For this show, the musicians are Cal Kehoe (guitar, vocals), Adrian Tramontano (drums), Sammi Garrett (percussion, vocals), Josh Schwartz (baritone sax, vocals), Rob Somerville (tenor saxophone), Rob Volo (trombone) and Kiran Edwards (keys).

Gould said that, to him, Prince embodies soul, creative arrangement and precision. “His music has the best energy and makes you feel on top of the universe.”

He described Bowie as having a voice and character that is completely unique.

“It is powerful and epic and decadent,” said Gould, who has made a career out of finding unique connections through the songbooks of artists. “It is such a treat to present music people know and love in a way that is fresh to the ears. This combination brings so much joy to everyone on and off stage.” Advertisement
