The rebooted movie version of the "Star Trek" set of films pays tribute to its roots and moves the series characters we know and love in new and unexpected directions. They're also all, obviously, played by fresh actors. Chris Pine's version of Captain James T. Kirk goes from a cocky ladies' man to a confident leader over the course of three films. He forges unforgettable friendships with Spock (Zachary Quinto) and Nyota Uhura (Zoe Saldana) while taking on his first command and navigating hostile planets,  Starfleet politics, and inter-crew conflicts. It's a growing-up story that shows Kirk is more than worthy of carrying on his late father George's (Chris Hemsworth) mantle.

All three films in the modern "Star Trek" series have managed to land on the higher end of IMDb's ratings scale. While none of them have managed to make it to the auspicious highest reaches, they've performed solidly in terms of the ranking system, which factors in viewer votes to determine just how good a movie can be. Star Trek: Beyond (7.0)

Coming in at the bottom of the pile is "Star Trek: Beyond," the third film in the trilogy. It's rated a not-too-shabby 7.0 on IMDb as of press time. This is slightly under the 80% audience approval score the film has on Rotten Tomatoes .

In reviews, viewers have highlighted "Star Trek: Beyond" for its tense action sequences, sense of humor, and ability to make you care about the characters. But more negative reviews continue to unfavorably compare the movie and its previous iterations with the original series and complain that it abandons science fiction for action movie theatrics and over-the-top writing. 

"Star Trek: Beyond" follows the crew after the USS Enterprise is forced to crash-land on an alien planet. This is the home of Krall (Idris Elba), a half-lizard alien being, whose greatest power is his ability to leech energy from others. Krall wants to completely destroy the Enterprise to get his hands on an artifact the ship is transporting. The mission soon becomes Kirk's greatest test as a captain as he and the crew fend for themselves in the wild and try to survive Krall's vendetta for long enough to find a way to get out of his dictatorship and back to their proper solar system.

Star Trek: Into Darkness (7.7)

Next up is "Star Trek: Into Darkness," which sits on IMDb at a 7.7. This sequel pits the crew against destructive forces within Starfleet that seek to take the entire organization down. Kirk has been stripped of his command after the events of the first movie. Shaken, Kirk returns to Earth for some rest and relaxation time off-duty, only to learn that there's been a bombing at Starfleet's London offices. John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch) is discovered to be working for Klingon forces and Kirk — motivated by the desire to get his command back and a desire for revenge — decides to pursue him. Harrison has a surprising identity that will rock the foundation of everything Kirk knows, as well as Starfleet itself.

Fans have said that the plot is better than that of "Star Trek: Beyond" and that the action and character development are likewise strong here. But other IMDb users have called the movie out for its slipshod writing and because it leans too hard into action-driven spy antics. Some watchers also didn't enjoy the story surrounding the discovery of Harrison's true identity. But the movie's positives are enough to land the film right in the center of the pack for users of IMDb.

Can Kirk overcome his rivalry with Spock to help Captain Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood) defend the ship against Romulan Commander Nero (Eric Bana)?

Consumers have applauded the way "Star Trek" manages to weave in cameos from the TV series and create compelling new backstories for Spock and Kirk. But other fans dislike the fact that the film doesn't carry the same thoughtful heft or emotional weight endemic of most "Star Trek" shows. And many, many reviews have lodged their complaints about the movie's overreliance on lens flares.

What Is The Next Star Trek Movie?

The next star trek movie won't be released in theaters.

The next Star Trek movie won't be a theatrical release, but it will be a made-for-streaming film on Paramount+. Star Trek: Section 31 starring Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh is the first Star Trek movie made for Paramount+ . Section 31 is written by Craig Sweeney and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi. A spinoff of Star Trek: Discovery , Section 31 will detail what happened to Yeoh's popular anti-heroine, Emperor Phillippa Georgiou after she left Discovery in season 3, and the film will purportedly explore Georgiou's ties to and the history of Section 31, Starfleet's infamous black ops organization.

Star Trek: Section 31 introduces a new cast of characters joining Michelle Yeoh's Emperor Georgiou. Section 31 began filming in January 2024 in Toronto and is expected to wrap in March. Although no release date has been announced yet, Star Trek: Section 31 could be released on the streamer in late 2024 if not in 2025.

However, high-profile filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino, Noah Hawley, S.J. Clarkson, and Matt Shakman were unable to overcome the "creative differences" to get Star Trek 4 in front of cameras.

Star Trek 4 is said to be the "final chapter" of the voyages of the USS Enterprise commanded by Chris Pine's Captain James T. Kirk and his crew.

Following the resolution of the WGA writers' strike, a new report indicated two Star Trek movies are in development at Paramount. Star Trek 4 is said to be the "final chapter" of the voyages of the USS Enterprise commanded by Chris Pine's Captain James T. Kirk and his crew. You may have heard that the even-numbered ones are good and the odd-numbered ones are not. That’s spot on for the films starring the cast of The Original Series (aka Kirk and friends) falls apart once you reach the tenth entry in the series. It would probably be worth your while to have this list of the Star Trek movies, ranked worst to best around to steer clear of the clunkers. Look, we’re not going to pretend everything here is worth two hours of your day, we’re just letting you know which came out after which.

Star Trek: Prime Timeline

The first thing you need to know about the Star Trek films is that while they travel back and forth in time, they also diverge into two (for now) different timelines. The films of the original crew (well, the first iteration of them, anyway – more on that later) are all in what is known as the Prime Timeline. 

Within the Prime Timeline, the movies are then split between The Original Series movies and The Next Generation movies.

1. Star Trek: The Motion Picture

• Release date: December 8, 1979
• Cast: William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley

This is the film that brought the voyages of the U.S.S. Enterprise to the big screen. An energy cloud is making its way toward Earth, destroying everything in its path. Kirk and crew intercept it and discover an ancient NASA probe at the heart of the cloud. Voyager – known as V’ger now – encountered a planet of living machines, learned all it could, and returned home to report its findings, only to find no one who knew how to answer. It’s a slow-paced film, and the costumes are about as 70s as they come, but there’s classic Star Trek at the heart of this film.

2. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

• Release date: June 4, 1982
• Cast: William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Ricardo Montalban

Ask a Star Trek fan what the best Star Trek movie is and more often than not, you’ll get Khan as your answer. A sequel to the events of the “Space Seed” episode of The Original Series, Khan is a retelling of Moby Dick with Khan throwing reason to the wind as he hunts his nemesis, James T. Kirk. Montalban delivers a pitch-perfect performance, giving us a Khan with charisma and obsession in equal parts.

3. Star Trek III: The Search for Spock

• Release date: June 1, 1984

Spock might have died in The Wrath of Khan, but this third entry set up the premise for his return, with the creation of the Genesis planet. Essentially a heist movie in reverse, Search for Spock has the crew defying orders from Starfleet in an attempt to reunite Spock’s consciousness with his newly-rejuvenated body. It’s not a great movie, but it does include two very important events: the rebirth of Spock and the death of Kirk’s son at the hands of the Klingons. That’ll be important a few flicks from now.   

4. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

• Release date: November 26, 1986
• Cast: William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Catherine Hicks

If Star Trek fans don’t say Khan is the best Star Trek movie, odds are very high they say Voyage Home is. It’s a funny film where the mission isn’t destruction, but creation – or more accurately, repairing the devastating effects of humankind’s ecological short-sightedness. 

A probe arrives at Earth, knocking out the power of everything in its path as it looks for someone to respond to its message (yeah, it happens a lot). This time, however, the intended recipient is the long-extinct blue whale. To save Earth, Kirk and co. go back in time to 1980s San Francisco to snag some blue whales. The eco-messaging isn’t exactly subtle, but it doesn’t get in the way of a highly enjoyable movie.

5. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier

• Release date: June 9, 1989

A writers’ strike and Shatner’s directorial skills (or lack thereof) doomed this film before a single scene was shot. The core plot is actually pretty good: Spock’s half-brother hijacks the Enterprise so that he can meet God, which he believes to be… himself. Some Star Trek fans have an odd fondness for this movie, as it showcases the camaraderie of Kirk, Spock, and McCoy when they’re off-duty.

6. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country

• Release date: December 6, 1991
• Cast: William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Christopher Plummer

Right, so if that Star Trek fan you’ve been talking to doesn’t choose either Khan or Voyage Home as the best Star Trek movie ever, they almost certainly name Undiscovered Country (and if they don’t, they have highly questionable taste, frankly). The Klingon moon of Praxis explodes, putting the entire Klingon race at risk. The Enterprise hosts a diplomatic entourage of Klingons, much to Kirk’s discomfort. 

Remember how Klingons murdered Kirk’s son? Well, he certainly hasn’t forgotten. Kirk’s lingering rage makes him the perfect patsy for the murder of the Klingon Chancellor, sending him and McCoy to a prison planet and setting the stage for war. Christopher Plummer is perfection as a Shakespeare-quoting Klingon general with no taste for peace.

7. Star Trek: Generations

• Release date: November 18, 1994
• Cast: Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner

And thus the torch is passed from the crew of The Original Series to that of The Next Generation. It’s a bit of a fumble, to be honest, but they all did their best to get Kirk and Picard into the same film and have it make sense. Malcolm McDowell plays Soran, a scientist who will stop at nothing to control the Nexus, a giant space rainbow that exists outside of space-time. 

Soran lost his family when his home world was destroyed and he wants to re-join them (or at least an illusion of them) in the Nexus. He’s not so much a villain as a tragic figure, but the Nexus makes a meeting between Kirk and Picard possible. Not all that sensible, but possible.

8. Star Trek: First Contact

• Release date: November 22, 1996
• Cast: Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner, Alice Krige

Okay, no, for real, if your Star Trek pal didn’t pick Khan or Voyage Home or… oh, nevermind. Cueing off the iconic two-part episode “Best of Both Worlds,” in which Picard is assimilated by the Borg, First Contact sees the collective traveling back in time in order to disrupt First Contact, the day Earth’s first foray into space attracted the attention of the Vulcans, kicking off the events that would eventually lead to Starfleet’s victory over the Borg. The Borg Queen torments Picard with visions of the past and tempts Data with humanity, going so far as to give him some human skin. 

The fight with the Borg aboard the Enterprise is thrilling, and the work on the surface to get first contact back on track is fun. Plus, there’s just nothing like Patrick Stewart turning it up to 11 as he lashes out at the enemy that haunts his dreams.

9. Star Trek: Insurrection

• Release date: December 11, 1998
• Cast: Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, F. Murray Abraham

Essentially an episode inflated for the big screen, Insurrection is about the Federation conspiring to displace a planet’s population in order to harvest the planet’s unique resource – super healing metaphasic particles. In addition to the rejuvenating natural resource, the Ba’ku also have access to exceptional technology, which they shun in favor of a more simple lifestyle. 

Data malfunctions, the villains are Federation allies (and former Ba’ku!), Picard gets to knock boots with a local – Insurrection is the very definition of “fine.” Chronologically, Insurrection is relevant for rekindling the romance between Riker and Troi, but not much else.

10. Star Trek: Nemesis

• Release date: December 13, 2002
• Cast: Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner, Tom Hardy

Before he mumbled his way into our hearts as Bane, Tom Hardy was Shinzon, a clone of Picard the Romulans created in an eventually abandoned attempt to infiltrate Starfleet. Shinzon is dying, and all that will save him is a transfusion of Picard’s blood. Unfortunately, Shinzon also happens to be a megalomaniac who happens to want to destroy all life on Earth and maybe a few other planets, too, if he’s feeling saucy. 

Nemesis is notable mostly for killing Data with a noble sacrifice, only to resurrect him moments later in a duplicate body found earlier by the Enterprise crew.

Star Trek: Kelvin Timeline

The last of the Prime Timeline movies failed to impress at the box office, so it was a few years before anyone tried to bring the Enterprise back to the big screen. Rather than lean on any of the TV crews, this new slate of movies would serve as a reboot, welcoming new audiences while honoring long-time fans. Welcome to the Kelvin Timeline. 11. Star Trek

• Release date: May 8, 2009
• Cast: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban

Back to the beginning! Star Trek introduces us to James T. Kirk, Spock, and “Bones” McCoy as they meet and join the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise. Though the plot is a relatively straightforward affair of a Romulan named Nero trying to destroy the Earth. His anger borne out of grief, what matters most is how it all came to be. In the future, Spock – the Prime Timeline version – tries to save Romulus from being destroyed by a supernova, but fails. Both his ship and Nero’s are kicked back in time, setting off a chain of events that diverge from the original, “true” timeline. 

The name “Kelvin” refers to the U.S.S. Kelvin, the ship heroically captained by Kirk’s father, which is destroyed in the opening moments of the movie.

12. Star Trek Into Darkness

• Release date: May 16, 2013
• Cast: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch

The benefit of the Kelvin Timeline is that it not only allows Star Trek to explore canon material – such as Khan (he of the Wrath) – but to do something completely new with it. Khan features heavily in Into Darkness, but he has no beef with Kirk. Instead, a Starfleet Admiral is threatening the lives of Khan’s crew, forcing them to craft weapons of mass destruction. 

Khan inevitably eludes captivity and strikes out against Starfleet, killing Captain Pike (and a bunch of others) in the process. Kirk and company eventually take Khan down, but not before Kirk sacrifices himself to save his crew. Don’t worry, these things don’t last in either Star Trek timeline, as Kirk gets better moments later thanks to *checks notes* Khan's super blood.

13. Star Trek Beyond

• Release date: July 22, 2016
• Cast: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Idris Elba

Beyond leans into the camaraderie of Kirk, Spock, and McCoy now that they’ve had some time together, much to the movie’s benefit. The Enterprise is lured to Altamid under false pretenses, leading to much of the crew being marooned on the planet. The architect of the deception was Krall, who wants an opportunity to return to a galaxy where war is the order of the day. 

Beyond is a significant point in the timeline for two reasons. First, it sadly marked the death of Spock Prime due to the passing of Leonard Nimoy. Second, it culminates in the Enterprise embarking on the five-year-mission that started everything back in 1966.

Star Trek movies: Release order

If you can't be bothered remembering two different orders for the Star Trek movies then we've got good news for you — the release order is identical to the chronological order that we've shown above (accounting for the Kelvin timeline as it's own entity anyway).

The full run of Star Trek films currently tops out at 13 entries; the fate of the 14th was hidden within a nebula of conflicting information. “Star Trek 4” was slated for December 22, 2023, but given that filming had yet to begin as of July 2022, it seems inevitable that date will change. Back in February 2022, Paramount that the principal cast would be returning for the fourth installment of the Kelvin timeline, a claim quickly disputed by the agents of those selfsame actors. Awkward.

Soon after, however, Chris Pine eventually signed on the dotted line, and his shipmates reached their own agreements. As of right now, Kirk (Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto), McCoy (Karl Urban, assuming he can make it work around filming of The Boys), Scotty (Simon Pegg), Uhura (Zoe Saldaña), and Sulu (John Cho) are all ready to beam up and get filming. Sadly, this will be the first of the Kelvin films to not feature Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov. Yelchin died in an accident at his home in 2016. It’s currently unclear if Chekov will be recast or if a different character will take his place on the bridge of the Enterprise.

Though the Kelvin timeline is often referred to as “J.J. Abrams Trek,” he won’t be directing Star Trek 4; Matt Shakman will take on that responsibility, leaving Abrams to produce. As for what it will be about, that’s anyone’s guess, but Chris Pine told Deadline he hopes this one tells a smaller story that appeals to the core Trek audience. “Let’s make the movie for the people that love this group of people, that love this story, that love Star Trek,” he said. “Let’s make it for them and then, if people want to come to the party, great.” It’s a strategy that makes sense; the disappointment with recent Trek films hasn’t been their content so much as their box office. A Trek film with a smaller scope (and budget) would almost certainly have a very healthy profit margin while also resonating with the fanbase.   

With no new announcements coming from San Diego Comic-Con 2022, it seems that we’ll have to wait for any more insight into the next Star Trek film. Sill, recent comments from Paramount CEO Brian Robbins have us cautiously optimistic: “We’re deep into [Star Trek 4] with J.J. Abrams, and it feels like we’re getting close to the starting line and excited about where we’re going creatively,” he told Variety .

Chris Pine Interview

Chris Pine catapulted from rising star to bona fide leading man with his performance as James T. Kirk in Star Trek (2009) and, following the blockbuster success of that first film in the rebooted franchise, the young actor faced a major decision: what to do for an encore. He chose Unstoppable , a heart-stopping thriller directed by Tony Scott and co-starring Denzel Washington. Pine and Washington play a newbie conductor and an experienced engineer, respectively, who race the clock to prevent a runaway train loaded with toxic chemicals from wiping out a Pennsylvania town. StarTrek.com recently caught up with Pine for an exclusive conversation in which he chatted up Unstoppable , which will open nationwide on November 12, discussed his Star Trek experience and contemplated Kirk’s future.

Audiences met your Kirk in the first Star Trek movie. As you move forward now and make the character your own, in what ways do you hope to see the character evolve?

Pine: I don’t know. I look forward to his development and bringing to light all his idiosyncrasies and thinking up new ways to surprise people with this character. I just trust Damon (Lindelof) and Bob (Orci) and Alex (Kurtzman) and J.J. (Abrams) and everybody behind it to create (another) good story, because they’ve already done it. I appreciate Kirk’s humor and I think that’s a legacy from Shatner’s Kirk, from the original and only Kirk, which I would love to bring into the future incarnation.

Zachary Quinto got his shot at working with Leonard Nimoy in the first film. What are your thoughts on having Shatner on board for the next film? Is it a great idea or too much of a stretch since they’d just done something similar with Nimoy?

Pine: It just isn’t, quite honestly, my decision to make. I think Mr. Shatner will forever be Captain Kirk. I think it would be, certainly, an interesting thing to bring him back. I don’t know if he necessarily wants to at this point or not. But it’s not my decision.

Shatner, on his website, has footage of the two of you meeting for the very first time. How did you enjoy that moment?

Pine: It was great. It was a very brief moment. It was at his charity event, so it had nothing to do with us meeting. It was more about raising money for his charity. But he was a lovely guy, really complimentary and very nice.

Let’s talk about Unstoppable. It is, in many ways, a two-hander between you and Denzel Washington. What impressed you most about him as an actor and as a man?

Pine: Well, he’s just an impressive kind of guy. He fits every part of the definition of a movie star. He’s handsome and charismatic and intelligent and sharp and quick and the whole deal. He’s a giving actor and gives you just as much off screen as he does on screen. And he’s got an ability to change it up all the time. So, on the written page a scene would look like one thing and then, in the hands of Denzel, who for the most part really drove the scenes that he and I were in, it becomes something else entirely – or it can. And that’s where the fun and excitement and the discoveries come from.

Having seen the movie, it’s obvious that Tony Scott cared as much about the characters as he did the action. On set, how did he go about doing that, especially when he was dealing with trains zipping by at 50 miles an hour?

Pine: That’s what makes this movie a great feat, in many ways. And it goes to show you Tony’s abilities with a movie like this, in this particular genre, which isn’t always known for good character work. He really paid attention to the complexities and the depths of these characters because he realizes – as J.J. does with Star Trek – that if you don’t care about the characters, it doesn’t matter how many trains you have exploding. So we all did a lot of work and spent a lot of time talking about who these guys were, where they came from, how they started the day. That let us, when we got to the action, know the emotional underpinning of who these guys were.

We’re sure a stuntman came in handy on this set, but considering all the close-ups, you must have done a lot of your own stunts. So, how much of it is you we’re seeing on screen, going from train to train?

Pine: The whole thing was pretty much me. Any time you see me jumping on or off a moving vehicle you can pretty much bet your ass it wasn’t me. But, for the most part, it was me. Strangely enough, it seems like there are more stunts in this movie than there actually were. I think maybe it’s because there’s a large train moving very fast, which makes it seem like everything is a stunt, when really, in fact, I only have about two stunts in it. And those were really fun. It’s like a roller coaster ride, a powerful moving vehicle. That just raises the stakes.

You’re shooting This Means War right now with McG directing and Reese Witherspoon and Tom Hardy joining you in front of the camera. Have you and Tom Hardy shared Star Trek stories yet?

Pine: You know, we haven’t, actually. We just talked about it briefly for the first time the other day. But, man, is he a hell of an actor. I don’t need to tell anyone this, but he’s going to be around for a long time. He’s already been around for a long time, but he’s going to explode. He’s just tremendous.

We keep hearing that you’re attached to Welcome to People , which ( Star Trek co-writer) Alex Kurtzman scripted and with which he’ll make his directorial debut. What’s happening on that front?

Pine: It’s not a go yet, but it’s certainly something I’m interested in. I love Alex’s script. It’s just a beautiful script. It’s a story that should be told and I think people would really, really like it, but nothing is set in stone yet.

Both your mom and your dad are actors. What’s the best bit of advice one of them gave you that’s really come into play, especially now that things are really taking off for you?

Pine: My mom always said -- and it’s great note, I think – that there’s no asterisk or ticker tape on the bottom of the screen when a movie plays. If you’re having a bad day or a long day and you’ve got to be in love with a woman or, whatever the scene calls for, it’s best just to bring it. It’s best just to do your job as well as possible and not try to blame anything or anyone or be the victim of anything because no one cares. At the end of the day, it’s on celluloid, and there it is.

A new “ Star Trek ” film is in the works at Paramount with “Andor’s” Toby Haynes on board to direct and Seth Grahame-Smith penning the script, Variety has confirmed.

While plot details are being kept under wraps, the upcoming feature will be an origin story that is set decades before 2009’s “Star Trek,” as well as an expansion of the “Star Trek” universe. J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot is producing.

During a Paramount Global investors day presentation in February of 2022, Abrams announced that a new “Star Trek” movie would begin shooting by the end of that year with the Pine-led crew. Pine and his co-stars reportedly had no idea Paramount was moving forward with another “Star Trek” film, which was eventually removed from the studio’s film slate in September of that year.

Haynes recently directed six episodes of the “Star Wars” series “Andor,” starring Diego Luna as the titular role. He also helmed the “Star Trek”-inspired episode of “Black Mirror,” titled “USS Callister.” Haynes is repped by WME and attorney Peter Nelson.

Grahame-Smith is best known as the author of the best-selling novels “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” and “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.” He also wrote and produced 2017’s “The Lego Batman Movie.” Grahame-Smith is repped by WME and attorneys PJ Shapiro and Wendy Kirk.

Star Trek star Chris Pine has commented on the long-gestating development of a fourth movie in the Kelvin Timeline, revealing that he was surprised to learn a new writer has come aboard as he “thought there was already a script.” That new writer is Dead Boy Detectives and The Flight Attendant’s Steve Yockey, whose involvement was announced back in March. For Pine, he advises that we all just “wait and see.”

“I honestly don't know. There was something in the news of a new writer coming on board. I thought there was already a script, but I guess I was wrong, or they decided to pivot. As it's always been with "Trek," I just wait and see.”

Star Trek was rebooted for the big screen by director J.J. Abrams back in 2009, with the new “Kelvin timeline” introducing younger versions of the iconic characters James T. Kirk, Spock, and the rest of the crew at the beginning of their Star Fleet careers. Two sequels, Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) and Star Trek Beyond (2016), have since been released, with a fourth movie having been in development ever since. Different scripts with very different storylines have been written, but at present, it is unknown what direction Star Trek 4 will take...or if it will ever actually happen.

Zoe Saldaña Is Eager to Return for Star Trek 4: 'I Still Have Hope'

Thankfully, there has been some positivity from Roddenberry Entertainment COO Trevor Roth regarding Star Trek 4 , who recently revealed that there is “a plan” and that there is now “every intent of a new movie coming out in the very near future.”

“I am not able to say much, but I can say that it is Paramount's intent to figure out the Star Trek side of movies and what's going on there. There's every intent of a new movie coming out in the very near future. There's a lot of secrecy around what's going to happen there. But there is a plan getting into place. And we're very excited to see it return to the big screen.”

In his interview with Business Insider , Pine discussed stepping into William Shatner’s shoes to take over the role of James T. Kirk in the franchise, explaining how he felt much more comfortable in the role by the time Star Trek Beyond rolled around.

“It's interesting. Karl Urban decided to go head first into McCoy because Karl loved "Star Trek." With Spock, you have to do Spock-like things, plus Zach [Quinto] kind of looked like Leonard [Nimoy]. And then Kirk is a tricky one. You are the lead of the band of characters, so you don't want to occupy too much space. It's fine if they are doing a thing, but you don't want to. And J.J. [Abrams] never asked me to do a thing, though I did do little nods to Shatner because it was fun. But I would say I felt most in his shoes in the third movie. By that point, I think I mellowed into it and didn't feel like I was trying too hard.”

Chris Pine can next be seen in the comedy Poolman , which he directed, produced, co-wrote, and leads. Poolman is scheduled to be released in the United States on May 10, 2024.

Chris Pine’s critically lambasted box office bust Poolman is now on digital streaming.

Pine directs, co-writes and stars in Poolman . The Star Trek movie alum plays Darren Barrenman, a Los Angeles area pool cleaner-turned-undercover detective who is hired to investigate and expose some dirty business dealings between an area land developer and local government official.

Poolman also stars Jennifer Jason Leigh, Danny DeVito, Annette Bening, John Ortiz, DeWanda Wise, Clancy Brown and Stephen Tobolowsky.

Poolman is now available on several digital platforms, including Prime Video and VUDU , also known as Fandango at home.

The film can either be purchased on premium video on demand for $14.99 or rented for $6.99. PVOD rentals generally are for a 48-hour period once a viewer starts playing the film.

Poolman didn’t exactly make a splash in theaters with moviegoers. According to The Numbers , Poolman opened in 162 theaters domestically on May 10 and earned $131,000 during its one-week run.

Box Office Mojo reports that Poolman had a limited run in Russian theaters and made nearly $28,000 for a worldwide box office tally of $159,000. Production budget numbers are not available.

In addition, Rotten Tomatoes critics splatted Poolman with a 22% “rotten” rating based on 51 reviews that were either written at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival or when the film opened in theater domestically May 10. Of the less than 50 verified users that rated the movie on RT , Poolman was given a negative 21% Audience Score.

Despite the critical drubbing the film received from critics, Pine wasn’t afraid to say that he loved making Poolman .

“When the film came out at Toronto and just got f—king panned … I tried to make a joyful film,” Pine told Josh Horowitz during his Happy Sad Confused podcast (via Variety ). “With so much joy behind it, to then be met with a fusillade of not-so-joyous stuff … the cognitive dissonance there was quite something.”

Pine, of course, has starred in his share of hit movies, including three Star Trek films, Wonder Woman , Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and Into the Woods .

“Criticism as an actor is just a part of the game, but there’s a lot of stuff to hide behind. There’s the director and the writer and the release pattern, etc.” Pine told Horowitz. “As an actor, you come on set and you do your dance and you go off and by the time the film comes out you’ve done X amount of other projects.”

As an actor, writer and director, though, Pine likened the experience to being a stand-up comedian onstage who is “utterly naked.”

Did you know?: Chris Pine once dated the ship from Star Trek: Discovery?

S tar Trek has seen a lot of great romantic and non-romantic couplings over the years. William Shatner and Leonard McCoy were notoriously good friends for most of their lives. Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine) dated Star Trek: Voyager executive producer Brennan Braga for a time. Heck, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine stars Alexander Siddig and Nana Visitor were married for a time.

It's not at all surprising but with all the hookups, dates, and marriage proposals, few can say they were romantically connected to a ship. More precisely the ship's computer. Chris Pine, who played the Kelvin Timeline's James Kirk, apparently dated a woman by the name of Annabelle Wallis. The name of the actress may not be the most well-known, but if you're a fan of Star Trek: Discovery you may recognize it.

She is, after all, the voice of the Discovery herself, Zora. Zoar is the artificial intelligence that helps control the Discovery. She has a personality, an identity, and a voice. That voice of course belongs to Wallis, who herself is a member of the Star Trek acting community.

While never official in any tangible way, Entertainment Tonight revealed that the two dated for some time before breaking up in 2022, making Wallis the first woman from the Star Trek franchise that Pine (probably) dated.

It's always interesting to see how the interpersonal dynamics between the acting crew develop and how things come together for them. With such a rich history that spans decades and such a wide array of opportunities to meet one another, it's a bit surprising that we haven't heard more couplings happening on the sets of the shows and films.

Wallis to her credit has just wrapped up her turn on Discovery but she'll likely return as Zora on Section 31. Pine, however, awaits the news of the fourth installment of his Star Trek film series.

Longtime X-Men producer Simon Kinberg  is beaming up to a new franchise.

The multi-hyphenate is in talks to produce a new Star Trek feature for Paramount Pictures , The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. If all goes well, the door would open to him taking active creative roles on the rest of the storied franchise’s film side. Alex Kurtzman and Akiva Goldsman are the main creative producers on Star Trek ‘s television side.

Abrams remains involved with the new project as a producer. There is no release date for the feature, but the studio has signaled that it would like a 2025 opening. The machinations of the franchise take place against the backdrop of a potential sale of Paramount, which could find itself under the ownership of Sony or Skydance.

There hasn’t been a Star Trek movie since Star Trek Beyond , which was released in 2016. In recent years,  Trek  primarily has lived on the small screen, boldly finding new life thanks to numerous streaming shows on Paramount+, among them  Star Trek Discovery ,  Picard and Strange New Worlds . Efforts to relaunch the film side, including reuniting the Abrams Trek cast that included Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana and Simon Pegg, among others, have ended up stranded on rocky alien shores. Paramount is also understood to still be developing a fourth Trek  to feature that cast that is being described as the final chapter for this crew.

Puck was the first to report on Kinberg being in negotiations to reboot the Star Trek movie franchise.
